Gunpowder and Lead

Today is Miranda Lambert’s birthday (born in 1983) and one of my favorite songs of hers is Gunpowder and Lead.

“Gunpowder & Lead”

County road 233, under my feet
Nothing on this white rock but little ol’ me
I’ve got two miles ’til he makes bail
And if I’m right, we’re headed straight for hell

I’m going home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight, well, now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man?
I’m gonna show him what little girls are made of
Gunpowder and lead

Well, it’s half past ten, another six-pack in
And I can feel the rumble like a cold black wind
He pulls in the drive, the gravel flies
He don’t know what’s waiting here this time

Hey, I’m going home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight, well, now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man?
I’m gonna show him what little girls are made of
Gunpowder and lead

His fist is big, but my gun’s bigger
He’ll find out when I pull the trigger

I’m going home, gonna load my shotgun
Wait by the door and light a cigarette
If he wants a fight, well, now he’s got one
And he ain’t seen me crazy yet
He slapped my face and he shook me like a rag doll
Don’t that sound like a real man?
I’m gonna show him what little girls are made of
Gunpowder and, gunpowder and lead
Gunpowder and lead, yeah, yeah, hey

    1. Morning, Pat! I agree – way too early! It was still spitting some snowflakes here yesterday and temp this morning is only 17….brrrrr! The tuna I left out for Wheezer was frozen so if he did show up, he wouldn’t have been able to eat it. SMH – man, I HATE winter!!!

Just The News: “After more than one month of gridlock, the U.S. Senate on Sunday night advanced a deal that would end the longest federal government shutdown in American history.

Senators voted 60-40 to approve a clean reconciliation bill passed by the House weeks ago, setting the stage for a final vote that would formally end the 40-day shutdown. Eight weary Senate Democrats broke ranks to to join Republicans in approval, Democratic Party rejected the same bill 14 times over the last month.

Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine who caucuses with Democrats, had emerged from a nearly three-hour meeting, expressing confidence enough Democrats would break with their party to reopen the government. “That certainly is what it looks like,” he told reporters.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., who represents nearly 150,000 federal employees, said he supports the updated spending package.

      Continuing Appropriations Act of 2026.pdf

President Donald Trump also expressed confidence the 40-day shutdown was poised to end. “It looks like we’re getting very close to the shutdown ending,” Trump told a White House pool of reporters.

The deal would reportedly give back pay to many federal workers, but would not authorize the extension of enhanced subsidies through insurance companies for Obamacare, lawmakers in both parties said. A coalition of around 10 Senate Democrats signaled that they will support moving forward with a package of three appropriations bills, coupled with a short-term funding stopgap through the end of January.

The deal also reportedly includes a December floor vote on extending the expanded pandemic-era Affordable Care Act tax credits for one additional year as well as language aimed at reversing the federal layoffs carried out during the shutdown.

A full vote on the measure will follow likely on Monday.”

      1. Morning Filly!
yeah…they’re clawing back all the fired gov’t workers ( since Oct1st) in this package deal though. that stinks. but that’s what bought VA’s senator vote–his state is HEAVY with gov’t workers.

        1. Oh, tell me about it! When I still lived there, the outer limit of the government workers to the west & NW were Leesburg & Front Royal but it’s expanded a lot now. Yeah, I wasn’t happy about bringing back the fired workers either.

    @shipwreckedcrew
A bit of a head’s-up on what is coming later —

I listened to the oral argument in the Tariffs case from this past week before the SCOTUS.

I made me laugh at all the prognosticators — including on the right — whose takeaway was “The Admin. faces skepticism over its assertions of power, even from conservative Justices.”

When the Sol. Gen. is the first to argue, raise your hand if you think the inclination of the Justices is to stand up and applaud before he utters a word, and then in their questioning simply say “We agree with you completely. Don’t trouble yourself to say anything.”

OF COURSE they are going to ask questions that are phrased with skepticism. Even when they agree with a particular litigating position, it is always the Court’s practice to pull at the threats and push to the boundaries to see where the extremes are and if the argument still holds up.

This is not cynical — it’s part of probing both sides. The only reason for the reactions I read is that when you have a 6-3 court and the SG represents a position that is — superficially — in alignment with the 6, probing questions are always going to cause the OTHER side to say “See how much trouble you’re in — even your side disagrees.”

I’ll go through some of the questions and answers in an article coming up in a few hours.

But, for the most part, none of the arguments advanced by Sotomayor or Jackson had any traction with other Justices — and Justice Barrett seemed to go out of her way to blunt any point made by Justice Jackson. I think this should worry those who think the Justices are aligned against the Admin — AND I think it shows the issues Justice Barrett has with Justice Jackson exposed at the end of the last term are still there.

One feature of Justice Jackson’s questioning remains consistent — her questions almost always include within their text or context her view of the issue. Here questions of the Neal Katyal arging against the Administration were uniformly softball questions right in line with his arguments.

  2. this could get really messy. Because of the court’s trick–not allowing the gov’t to appeal the ruling immediately–states jumped the gun and submitted requests for snap funding. they loaded recipient’s cards and were telling them to spend it. Now the gov’t is telling those states to claw back that the money and they’re fuming.

    FTA

President Donald Trump’s administration is demanding states “undo” full SNAP benefits paid out under judicial orders in recent days, now that the U.S. Supreme Court has stayed those rulings, marking the latest swing in a seesawing legal battle over the anti-hunger program used by 42 million Americans.

The demand from the U.S. Department of Agriculture came as more than two dozen states warned of “catastrophic operational disruptions” if the Trump administration does not reimburse them for those SNAP benefits they authorized before the Supreme Court’s stay.

  3. EXCERPT: “Beset by soaring prices, an increasingly hostile regulatory climate, and growing public opposition in coastal communities, offshore wind faces a new challenge from a powerful public official and erstwhile booster of strict climate policies.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has ordered the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate wind projects’ effects on the health and safety of commercial fishermen, Bloomberg News reports. Specifically, Kennedy in late summer quietly instructed CDC’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to prepare such research. The office of the U.S. Surgeon General is also involved in the assessment.

Originally, the research was to be wrapped up within a couple of months, but its completion has been delayed by the government shutdown. “Work on this report has been halted solely due to the Democrat-led shutdown,” a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) told Reuters.

    Human Health Effects

To date, research on the human health effects of offshore wind turbines has been spotty, with a 2011 literature review finding “no peer-reviewed articles demonstrate a direct causal link between people living in proximity to modern wind turbines, the noise they emit and resulting physiological health effects,” according to The Hill.

But a study released in January by the University of Portsmouth in the U.K. warned of potentially harmful levels of metals from turbine protection systems. “The materials used to protect wind turbines from corrosion leach into the surrounding water, which could pose risks to ecosystems, seafood safety, and human health,” the study found. “Offshore wind farms release thousands of [tons] of aluminum, zinc, and iridium each year.”

Professor Gordon Watson of the university’s School of the Environment and Life Sciences supports wind farms because of their role in reducing carbon emissions but adds, “There is limited data on how these metals affect the environment near operational offshore wind farms, so it’s hard to assess the full risks.”

  4. “This whole shut-down bullshit is a perfect example of just how fucked up politics can be – especially when the egos amongst the players are as big as they are. It was nothing more than a petty, pointless political power posturing play.

Absofuckin’lutely not a single fuckin’ thing was accomplished by, because of or during this amateurish pissing contest. Nothing. The only point that was made is that the loonie left is indeed getting loonier. Next House and Senate election is gonna be another shitshow as the old guard is put out to sea and whackjobs like AOC and her ilk take their places.Maybe it is a good thing that I’m nearing the end my life here on Earth. Maybe the next place’ll be a little more civilized…”

I told him I’m fine if I don’t get it back until next spring but it would be appreciated if he could call and check on the status – it’s been almost a month now! He said he would.

  7. “Donald Trump recounted his high school football experience during a live broadcast at the Washington Commanders vs. Detroit Lions NFL game on November 9, 2025, where he appeared in the Fox Sports broadcast booth. He played tight end for the New York Military Academy football team from 1959 to 1964.

Trump joked that playing tight end was easier back then because his quarterback “didn’t have a very strong arm,” adding, “I would say 10 yards was a long pass.” When asked by analyst Jonathan Vilma if he had scored any touchdowns, Trump admitted, “I’m not sure I had any,” and followed up with a self-deprecating remark: “At least you realize I never tell a lie, right?” A photo of Trump’s high school team, showing him wearing jersey number 85, was displayed during the segment.

Trump also confirmed that he participated in other sports during high school, including varsity soccer and baseball, with some classmates describing him as a standout athlete, particularly in baseball. One former classmate, Ted Levine, claimed Trump was so skilled he could have played professional baseball as a pitcher. Trump’s appearance at the game included a flyover by Air Force One, which he called “the greatest flyover ever,” and he was met with mixed reactions from the crowd, including boos.”

  8. “America’s Real Enemy — Inside the Government”

Michael T. Flynn LTG USA (RET), Nov 10, 2025

“The biggest enemies Americans face (bar none), are NOT enemies “over there,” or enemies outside of our contiguous borders…NO! The biggest enemy we face is right here within our own government.

You cannot give grace to someone who wants to destroy our way of life. If there is no indication of accountability (and there doesn’t appear to be any), the American people who voted for the tearing apart of the so called deep state will start feeling betrayed and powerless.

We have our champion in the White House (President Trump). We now need those around him to start moving at his speed and operating on his timeline. Every day that goes by is a loss of momentum.

Without accountability, there can be no reconciliation. There can be no true unifying of our nation. Many people feel the government (for many years) has let us down. It was Abraham Lincoln who said:

”At what point shall we expect the approach of danger? By what means shall we fortify against it? Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step across the Ocean, and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reaches us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

I hope I am over wary; but if…the feelings of our best citizens becomes alienated from our government, we will find ourselves in trouble. How then shall we fortify against it? The answer is simple.

Let every American, every lover of liberty, every well wisher to his posterity, swear by the blood of the [American] Revolution, never to violate in the least particular, the laws of the country; and never to tolerate their violation by others. As the patriots of [1776] did to the support of the Declaration of Independence, so to the support of the Constitution and Laws, let every American pledge his life, his property, and his sacred honor; let every man remember that to violate the law, is to trample on the blood of his father, and to tear the character of his own, and his children’s liberty.

Let reverence for the laws, be breathed by every American mother, to the lisping babe, that prattles on her lap…let it be taught in schools, in seminaries, and in colleges; let it be written in Primers, spelling books, and in Almanacs; let it be preached from the pulpit, proclaimed in legislative halls, and enforced in courts of justice. And, in short, let it become the political religion of the nation; and let the old and the young, the rich and the poor, the grave and the gay, of all sexes and tongues, and colors and conditions, sacrifice unceasingly upon its altars.”

Lincoln was only 28 years old when he spoke these words (circa 1838). Where are the Lincoln’s of our time who would willingly speak today about the trials of our future?

Courage only becomes contagious when a leader makes the bold and fearless decision to be courageous. Make the decision today for the good of our nation. As a Veteran, I willingly stand shoulder to shoulder with all those believers who recognize our need to protect our American way of life.

  9. “Supreme Court rejects case to overturn ruling allowing same-sex marriage nationwide — Kim Davis asked the Supreme Court justices to overrule the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision after a jury awarded damages to a same-sex couple whom she refused to issue a marriage license”

Just The News, By Natalia Mittelstadt, November 10, 2025 9:57am

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a case to overturn its 2015 same-sex marriage ruling. Former Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis asked the Supreme Court justices to overrule the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision after a jury awarded damages to a same-sex couple whom Davis refused to issue a marriage license, The Hill news outlet reported.

“The Court can and should fix this mistake,” Davis’ attorneys wrote in court filings. The justices declined to take up Davis’ appeal in a brief order, along with dozens of other petitions.

Davis had raised religious objections to issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples after the Obergefell ruling. David Ermold and David Moore were a couple to whom Davis refused to issue a marriage license, resulting in their lawsuit against her. She was found to have violated a judge’s order in another case, which required her to issue licenses.

The case resulted in Davis being jailed for five days, and the couple obtained their license. Then, Kentucky passed a law allowing clerks to keep their signatures off marriage certificates. After the couple won $100,000 in emotional distress damages from a jury plus $260,000 in attorneys’ fees, Davis kept fighting in court. Her appeal argued that she has a private First Amendment religious defense against the award, despite acting as a government official.

Davis also requested to overturn Obergefell, arguing that the whole lawsuit would fall if the justices did. According to the couple, the effort wasn’t properly presented to the Supreme Court, and they argued that Davis had waived the argument earlier in the litigation.

“The Court should hold her to that representation,” the couple’s attorneys wrote. “Reaching the question of whether to overrule Obergefell in the context of this case would also require the Court to first decide thorny questions about how such a ruling would affect Davis’s liability.”

  10. Just talked to Gage – his fiancé wants a china closet to keep her youngest daughter from getting into her trinkets & breakables so I told him he could have my Mom’s, as well as the matching hutch. HB had it and after she died, Seth was just going to give it to Goodwill!!! So I took it back but don’t need it since I’ve given away most of what was inside it anyway. I suggested that he come up soon, before it snows (neither of our trucks are good in the snow); I also want his help putting up plastic on the exterior of my patio screens for the winter. I did it several years ago and it helps to keep it warmer inside.

Image for article: Florida sheriff employs world’s first search and recovery otter

“Finding human remains under water otter be a lot easier for Martin County deputies now that they have Splash on the team. Splash is a two-year-old Asian otter with the ability to smell under water, so it can dive into the murky depths to find human remains that are undetectable to humans or K9 units.

Florida’s gators tend to take cadavers down to the bottom of the swamps and stash them there for later, and the silt is so thick, people can’t see while swimming in them.

According to CBS12, Splash is pretty good at finding bodies. He’s found four over the last year. The cadaver otter is so good in fact that his trainer Michael Hadsell, Founder of Peace River Search and Rescue says,

I could probably stay out 52 weeks out of the year and just keep working. So we’re going to need another otter to help with the call volume.

And he plans to train another otter next year. He also says there may or may not be a TV show in the making by the name of Law and Otter.”

Human Events, one of the country’s oldest conservative publications dating to the 1940s and once a favorite of Ronald Reagan, will be ending daily publication this month and will be re-imagined into a large virtual and live events platform with ticket, music and movie sales and daily event programming for politics, news, sports and entertainment.

JTN Network will be led by CEO Mark Meckler who is an experienced entrepreneur and policy activist. He is joined by Just the News founder John Solomon, who will serve as Chief Strategy and Content officer as well as Board chairman.
