Utah State Flower: Sego Lily

The Sego Lily is a sacred plant in Native American legend. Sego is a Shoshonean word thought to mean “edible bulb.” The flower thrives in desert-like conditions. It blooms in May and June. There are about seven variations of the plant in Utah. The white flower species displays three large, waxy petals. Each petal, on the inner surface, shows a distinctive crescent-shaped, purplish marking with a fringe of bright yellow hairs. The plant’s leaves, withered by flowering time, appear grass-like and sparse.

Sego Lilies, are the Utah State flower. This plant is responsible for staving the hunger of the Mormon pioneers many times. They retained their color to some extent after cooking, thus making a colorful dish. The pioneers of 1848–49 ate the sego lily bulb to help ward off starvation. Some bulbs were as large as walnuts, but most were the size of marbles. The bulbs were best fresh-cooked because they turned thick and ropey when cool.

By the 1880s those early settlers who had eaten the bulb felt it set them apart from newcomers to the Salt Lake Valley. The old-timers thought that to have suffered through the hard times of the early Utah colonizing showed their tenacity and righteousness. For those pioneers it became a badge of virtue to have been a “bulbeater.”

On March 18, 1911, the Utah State Legislature designated the sego lily as the state flower. Early in 1913 the LDS General Relief Society Board chose it as their official emblem. During the First World War the flower became a symbol of peace. Karl E. Fordham’s poem “Sego Lily” portrayed the plant as an image of home, mercy, freedom, and peace for the men and women of Utah who were serving on the battlefields of Europe.

Few Utahns today have eaten a sego lily bulb. Instead, people harvest the flower by taking pictures of it in its harsh, Utah desert setting. Others just look at the flowers and store memories of the sego lily’s beauty of springtime blossoms. Today, the delicate bloom nourishes the senses and the soul.

    1. Good morning! Dark here too but not as cold this morning – up to 44 instead of 34. I left tuna out for Wheezer – he came and ate during the night and is gone again. I reckon everyone will miss GA for some time…..

EXCERPT: “According to recent polling by multiple institutions, President Donald Trump’s public perception has been unscathed by the shutdown despite Democratic Party messaging that he and his party are to blame.

Data show Trump’s approval ratings have either held steady or slightly improved during the ongoing government shutdown, the longest in U.S. history at over three weeks.

Newsweek‘s tracker has Trump’s approval at its highest point since August 21, at 45%, but that publication does not readily provide information about the number of people polled, by what means, and what the margin of error is. A Morning Consult poll from October 17-19 shows Trump’s approval at its highest point since the end of August at 46% approval. That poll consisted of 1,984 registered voters online. The data were weighted to approximate a target sample of registered voters based on age, race/ethnicity, gender, educational attainment and region. Results from the full survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

      Pollster: “Approval holding steady”

Just The News spoke with public opinion pollster Scott Rasmussen who said, “For 29 straight weeks, he [Trump] has been within two points of the 50% mark, sometimes in a low point, it slips down to 48%, sometimes up to 52%. Most of the time, right around 50%.”

Rasmussen, who is the President of RMG Research, spoke about the consistency of the ratings and added, “There was an initial honeymoon that faded, and nobody’s really changed their mind. The President’s job approval is almost identical to his share of the popular vote. He got just under 50% of the vote, and that’s where his approval has been holding steady.”

This resilience, despite historical trends that typically hurt incumbents during shutdowns, is likely due to Trump’s strong support among the Republican Party, cultural appeal, and a polarized electorate, with only 48% of Americans blaming him primarily compared to 61% in the 2018-19 shutdown.

A YouGov/Economist poll last week also showed improvement in Trump’s net approval with a bump of two points from -17 to -15. However, each of these polls was conducted prior to this week’s controversy over the partial demolition of the White House’s East Wing. That poll consisted of 1,648 U.S. adult citizens online from October 4–6, 2025, with a margin of error ±3.4%.

Successful messaging and the “Schumer Shutdown”

This time around, Trump’s 2.0 White House is on offense in many areas, but most notably the recent shift of shutdown blame to Democrats, in particular, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. Nearly every administration official and Trump ally refers to the “Schumer Shutdown,” or the “Democrat-led shutdown” in public appearances…..”

      1. Good Morning Filly!

I agree on GA! When I would sit down in the morning at the laptop, I would always see her “like” of the post and comments mostly. sigh. I’m getting old.

this was my last comment yesterday…I never talked on the phone so much!

gees Louise! I talked to my mom for almost an hour. then my nephew called–he NEVER calls, we usually email–then I realized today would have been his Dad’s birthday. sigh. so we talked for a long time. I was getting ready to sit at my laptop when my son called!

I have never been on the phone so much!!!

          1. my nephew is my sister’s son–both parents died early. He doesn’t have great social skills outside his high school friends, but we keep in touch through emails and texts. I invited him and his wife for our Christmas get together we’re planning for Mom. and right, my son and his wife didn’t want children.
the conversations were mostly pleasant–son likes to argue liberal bullshit–that’s when hubby walks away. I wasn’t in the mood to do that and didn’t take the bait.

      Hey Gov. JB:

There is a “Southern District of Illinois” in your state where this policy will also be applied.

That means you can be indicted for obstruction in the Southern District of Illinois.

It tends to vote for Republicans — like Pres. Trump.

There won’t be any Chicago residents on your jury down there.

Target just laid off 1,800 U.S. employees.
They have zero stores in India.
Yet they’ve built massive tech and data teams in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Yep, sending our data and financial information to India.

So let’s get this straight –
They sell to Americans, fire Americans, and hire foreign workers in a country they don’t even operate in.

      You cannot make this up.

Just The News, By Amanda Head, October 23, 2025

EXCERPT: “The dual revelations that an illegal alien school administrator from Iowa made it onto the voter rolls in Maryland and that over 2,700 noncitizens escaped strict voter ID checks to qualify to vote in Texas are creating new momentum for creating a nationwide citizenship check system for elections.

“Many folks that come into my office will tell me, and anyone who will listen, this is the biggest issue in the country. Democrats don’t want tightly run elections,” Rep. Eli Crane, R-Ariz., told Just the News on Thursday night. “We all know that they want as much room for, you know, fraud, as humanly possible.”

“So right now, in many states, you can just check a box and say you’re a citizen, and that’s it. What we’re fighting for is we’re actually fighting that you as a citizen have to prove that you’re a citizen of this country if you’re going to vote in our election,” he said during an interview on the Just the News No Noise television show.

Crane and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, are spearheading a campaign to mandate proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration in upcoming federal elections.

Their effort, endorsed through a letter supporting a petition from the America First Legal Foundation, has gained traction with additional Republican lawmakers, including Sens. Ted Budd (North Carolina), Jim Banks (Indiana), Roger Marshall (Kansas), Cindy Hyde-Smith (Mississippi), John Cornyn (Texas), Marsha Blackburn (Tennessee), Ron Johnson (Wisconsin) and Bernie Moreno (Ohio).

The Trump administration granted states free and direct access to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database, which enabled Texas to cross-check its voter rolls and identify 2,724 potential noncitizens registered to vote.

Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson on Tuesday announced her office has completed its review of the Lone Star state’s voter registration ledger against citizenship data in the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ (USCIS) SAVE database.

Nelson said she has identified potential noncitizens who possibly voted illegally in recent state elections. The list of potential noncitizens has been turned over to local counties, who will conduct their own investigations into the eligibility of the identified voters……”

  2. Just The News: “Illegal migrant and truck driver Harjinder Singh, who was allegedly responsible for a fatal crash in Florida earlier this year, reportedly failed the test to get his commercial driver’s license (CDL) 10 times before he finally got it in 2023.

Singh, who had obtained a commercial driver’s license in California, has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide in connection with the crash that occurred in August, in which three people were killed.

Investigators with the Florida Attorney General’s Office told Fox News on Thursday that Singh failed his CDL knowledge exam in Washington state 10 times between March 10, 2023, and May 5, 2023, and his air brakes knowledge exam twice.

The sources told the outlet that the Washington office that trained Singh acknowledged the man could speak English, but that he struggled with it. Both Washington state and California eventually gave Singh his CDL.

Florida investigators also said Singh failed English and road sign tests.

The report comes after the Transportation Department, under Secretary Sean Duffy, created new rules for issuing CDLs that seek to make it more difficult for migrants to acquire the licenses. The new rule closes dangerous loopholes and “launches immediate enforcement action against California for gross negligence.”

The secretary said part of the pressure on California is because drivers usually have nationwide routes, meaning that California licensees will be able to drive anywhere in the country.”

  3. Just The News: “President Donald Trump on Thursday announced during a Cabinet roundtable that an anonymous donor has pledged to help cover military pay for troops impacted by the government shutdown. The private donation comes the same day Senate Democrats blocked a Republican bill that would have covered the paychecks of servicemembers, Transportation Security Administration employees, and air traffic controllers.

Trump said the donor, who did not want his identity disclosed, has agreed to donate $130 million to the federal government to help cover the spending shortfall. The $130 million check has already been received, the Epoch Times reported.

“He called us the other day and he said, ‘I’d like to contribute any shortfall you have because of the Democrat shutdown. I’d like to contribute, personally, contribute any shortfall you have with the military, because I love the military and I love the country, and any shortfall, if there’s a shortfall, I’ll contribute it,’’’ Trump said.

Democratic Sens. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland and Gary Peters of Michigan said they rejected the Republican-led bill because they were preparing their own alternatives that would cover all federal employees. Van Hollen said his bill also includes a provision that would block Trump from firing federal workers during the shutdown.”

  4. EXCERPT: “……‘It Should Come as No Surprise’

The latest shocking DOJ document unearthed by Grassley’s team follows on the heels of the senator’s release earlier this month of records showing the Biden FBI targeted the personal cell phone data of nine Republican lawmakers — eight senators and a representative — as part of the 2022-launched “Arctic Frost” operation. FBI officials sought and obtained “tolling data,” data about the senators’ phone calls between Jan. 4 and Jan. 7, 2021. As Grassley’s release noted, “That data shows when and to whom a call is made, as well as the duration and general location data of the call. The data does not include the content of the call.”

“Based on the evidence to-date, Arctic Frost and related weaponization by federal law enforcement under Biden was arguably worse than Watergate,” Grassley said in a statement.

Previous Arctic Frost documents released by Grassley and Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations Chairman Ron Johnson, R-Wis., show officials in the Biden White House “personally assisted the FBI” in grabbing Trump’s and former Vice President Mike Pence’s government phones. Grassley’s investigative team also discovered records showing Wray’s FBI placed nearly 100 “Republican-linked individuals and Republican groups — such as Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA — under Arctic Frost’s investigative scope.”

Attorneys for Smith have defended the disgraced special counsel’s actions as “entirely lawful, proper and consistent with established Department of Justice policy.”

Johnson, one of the eight Republican senators whom federal investigators spied on, has a different interpretation of the weaponized DOJ that unleashed the political probe.

“It is interesting to note who was aware of and approved the fishing expedition initiated by FBI Director Christopher Wray, supported by Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, and approved by Attorney General Merrick Garland,” the Wisconsin senator told The Federalist Thursday. “It should come as no surprise that these are some of the same partisan actors who have sullied the FBI and DOJ and done such egregious harm to our country.”

“ Jack Smith asks Congress and the Justice Department to allow him to testify publicly”

      I found this paragraph interesting:

      ““he will not be punished””.

      Pulled from the paragraph below.

“ Smith’s lawyers on Thursday told the Republican committee leaders, however, that he would need reassurance from the Justice Department that “he will not be punished” for testimony, since some of the facts of his special office investigations are still under seal in court or protected by grand jury secrecy rules.”.

  7. Just The News: “New York Attorney General Letitia James reportedly pleaded not guilty Friday in a Virginia court to two charges of federal bank fraud. The judge set a trial date of Jan. 26, 2026. “Not guilty judge to both counts,” James reportedly said in the hearing at the federal Eastern District of Virginia court.

The Justice Department indicted James earlier this month, alleging that she misrepresented how she would use a house she bought in 2020 in Norfolk, southeast Virginia, so she could obtain a lower interest rate on her mortgage, CBS News reported.

According to the indictment, instead of using the property as a second home, she allegedly rented it to a family member, treating it as an investment property, in contravention of the mortgage terms.

U.S. District Judge Jamar Walker, a Biden appointee, is overseeing the case.

James has called the charges “baseless.” “This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system,” she said before the hearing.

James’ attorney, Abbe Lowell, said before the hearing that his client “flatly and forcefully denies these charges,” and that he is “deeply concerned that this case is driven by President Trump’s desire for revenge.”

  10. i had no idea there were this many marijuana growers in Oklahoma…AND 85% of those are affiliated with CHINA!

    FTA

Local and federal law enforcement officials shut down an incorrectly registered marijuana growing site in Wilson, Oklahoma, on Oct. 20, seizing 15,000 plants and hundreds of pounds of the drug.

The raid on Purple Light LLC is just one in a series in the state, where the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN) is closing down marijuana growing operations at a rate of two or three per week.

The operation included officers from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and several illegal immigrants were taken into custody

According to Oklahoma business records, the owner of the company is Chen Ri Fei.

Law enforcement officers found illegal Chinese pesticides on site, which were used on the marijuana plants. Agents also found body armor at the facility.

The state is investigating whether operations are selling the marijuana they grow on the black market, or have dodged the state residency requirement by recruiting a local “straw owner.”

On Oct. 16, the OBN raided grower BNL Frontier Sharon-Mutual and found 8,777 marijuana plants. The investigation into BNL is continuing.

Two days earlier, agents also seized more than 18,585 marijuana plants during a raid on Wyatt’s Green, which was operating without a license.

ICE, which was involved in the raid, took 10 people into custody, and OBN expects to make more arrests.

The narcotics bureau says Wyatt’s Green used an illegal “straw ownership.” The business is registered to Yawu Huang.

OBN set up a special task force to address the rise of organized crime in Oklahoma, which it says has set up growing operations in the state.

On Sept. 18, Oklahoma narcotics officials told Congress that in 2024–2025, marijuana worth $153 billion was known to have been grown in the state.

They added that sales of medical marijuana cannot account for all of the drug grown.

The director of the OBN, Donnie Anderson, told Congress that it is likely to leave Oklahoma for the black market in other states.

Oklahoma approved medical marijuana in 2018, licensing its cultivation and sale within its borders.

The state established no cap on the number of farms that could be licensed to grow marijuana and no limit on how many marijuana plants each farm could cultivate.

It then reported an explosive growth of marijuana growers.

As many as 85 percent of licensed grow sites have connections with Chinese owners or operators, according to Mark Woodward, information officer with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics.

Blushing, she unzipped a little more and gave it another go. Nothing. Now flustered but determined, she smiled nervously and tugged the zipper one last time – still couldn’t do it!

Just then, a large bodybuilder standing behind her gently lifted her by the waist and set her right on the step. Furious, Melissa spun around and shouted,

  12. “The Preservation of Our Constitutional Republic”

Michael T. Flynn LTG USA (RET), Oct 24, 2025

EXCERPT: “We are now about eight months from the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which gave birth to our nation. The technical term for our nation’s 250th birthday is our “semi-quincentennial,” or half of five centuries. Many have observed that today America’s period of ascendency is over, and its decline is obvious and inevitable. They certainly could make a good case that as a nation that we are in decline.

    The Hard Facts

Our national government just passed the point where our stated debt has exceeded $38 trillion, and that is just a fraction of all of the commitments our nation has made to spend money we do not have. We live in a country where half of American adults pay no federal income tax, and yet demand more and more benefits. We are reaching the point warned of, that “a democracy can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits.” That excessive spending is then followed by dictatorship.

The top 1 percent of earners (earning over $650,000 annually) pay about 40 percent of all federal income tax. We have the highest disparity of wealth in the history of our country as well as the developed world. The top 1 percent own 31 percent of the privately held wealth, while the bottom half own only 2.5 percent. America has about 905 billionaires, worth almost $8 trillion, or 5 percent of the nation’s privately held wealth.

We have about one-quarter of children are growing up in single family homes, and over half of black children in this condition. Most children can gorge on pornography almost at will. Child abuse and child trafficking are rampant. Half of marriages end in divorce. Off- year elections generate pitiful levels of participation. Church attendance is down considerably.

We have the highest incarceration rates in the world. Young adults graduate college with huge personal, nondischargeable debt, with degrees that prepare them for jobs that don’t exist. Robotics and Artificial Intelligence threaten the jobs which do exist. America is flirting with war in at least three theatres of the world — Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and South America. There appears to be an establishment that controls the direction of the nation, regardless of what the people want, or who they elect. And the list of bad news goes on and on.

    Historical Trends

But certainly, not all is doom and gloom, but how long can a constitutional republic such as the United States expect to survive? The duration of a government like ours is a matter of much academic debate. A Scottish historian, Alexander Tytler, postulated that democracies or republics last between 200-300 years, following a pattern: bondage, to spiritual faith, to courage, to liberty, to abundance, to selfishness and complacency, to apathy, to dependence, followed by a return to bondage. Along that scale, I would postulate that America is somewhere in the selfishness and complacency or possibly at the apathy stages. Tytler’s analysis indicates our next stop is dependence. If dependence is not frightening to every American, the step that follows that should be.

Of course, there are no fixed rules which govern how long America will survive as a Constitutional Republic, or even theories that are any more than educated guesses. The Roman Republic lasted about 482 years before transitioning into an empire, while the Weimar Republic in Germany lasted only 14 years before succumbing to extremism. Between these, the Swiss constitutional system has lasted 177 years since 1858 and is still functioning. But there is no question that entropy applies not just in thermodynamics, but also politics. Without constant maintenance, over time, disorder displaces order. Chaos enters and weakens nations. A demoralized people stop building a society, and instead, sits back to watch it dissolve.

    The Threat Posed by Government

Perhaps the greatest single threat to our Constitutional Republic is, paradoxically, our government — at all levels. Governments can and do self-destruct. Many view government service as the quickest path to achieve personal wealth. Re-election is more important to many than national survival. Problems such as Social Security and Medicare funding are kicked down the road. Our current level of federal spending of almost $7 trillion per year cannot seem to be curtailed because Democrats will not sacrifice social programs, and Republicans will not sacrifice defense spending. Soon there will be no money for either, as interest on our debt is about $750 billion, and climbing, as interest rates increase.

We fail to consider the true costs of our Neocon adventurism overseas. We would not need $1 trillion in defense outlays if our government focused on defending our Homeland, rather than projecting force, or intruding ourselves into disputes between foreign countries that are of no concern to us. The cost of the two Iraq and Greater Middle East wars in blood and treasure is incalculable and must not be repeated — but we don’t seem to be able to stop ourselves.

And while I am talking about government, I want to add that following the example, or the advice, of most, politicians will often lead us into chaos, not away from it. Just look at the personal lives of most politicians. I am reminded of the 1971 song “Sunshine” by Jonathan Edwards who wrote: “He can’t even run his own life; I’ll be damned if he’ll run mine.”

    The Threat Posed by Us…….”
