A raven is a large black bird in the genus Corvus, which is part of the crow family, Corvidae. Members of this family are known as ‘corvids’. Although there are nine species of raven, the word ‘raven’ is most often used to refer to the common raven, Corvus corax. The common raven is the most widely-distributed, and the (joint) largest of all the corvids. The common raven isn’t just the largest member of the crow family; it’s also the largest passerine. Passerines are also known as ‘perching birds’, or ‘song birds’. They make up over half of all living bird species.

The common raven is a large, jet-black bird. It has a body length of up to 21.3 in. and a wingspan of up to 51.2 in. It is a similar size to (if not slightly larger than) both the common buzzard (Europe) and the red-tailed hawk (North America). A raven’s plumage can appear to have a glossy, green or blue sheen. Its bill is large and powerful, with bristles that reach about half-way along its upper side. The chin feathers are shaggy and often prominent. When in flight, the common raven’s tail is diamond, or ‘wedge’-shaped. Its wings are long and relatively narrow. Finger-like feathers may be seen at the tips of the wings.

Perhaps due to its large size and somewhat sinister appearance, the raven has found its way into the myths and legends of many cultures. In Norse mythology, the ravens Huginn and Muninn (thought and memory) sit one on each shoulder of the god Odin, and supply him with news and information. Several First Nations peoples know the bird as a powerful trickster. Others know it as a creator. The bird appears on the crests and artwork of many indigenous North American tribes. In England, it is said that if the small raven colony present in the Tower of London were to leave, then the country would fall to an invader.

Raven Intelligence

Crows as a family are known for their high intelligence, and the raven is no exception. The species has one of the largest brains of any bird, and, in relation to body size, one of the largest of all animals. The raven’s intelligence is apparent in many of its dealings with other ravens. Individuals can remember their relationship with other ravens for years. A raven will form mutually beneficial relationships with ‘friendly’ birds, and will also attempt to prevent competitors from forming potentially beneficial relationships themselves.

A raven can remember not only its own place in the system, but also the relationship between other ravens. A raven will show discomfort if other familiar ravens do not behave in the expected manner towards one another.

Ravens are among the small number of animals that are able to communicate to each other about things that are not present. (This is known as displacement). For example, upon finding carrion being guarded by a pair of older ravens, a young raven has been observed returning to its roost and telling the others about the find. The next day, the flock flew to the carrion together to see off the older pair and claim the carrion for themselves.

Ravens also demonstrate problem-solving abilities, tool use, and are even known to ‘play’ – partaking in activities purely for enjoyment (a behavior seen only in intelligent animals).

Like most crows, the raven is omnivorous. It is a predator, a scavenger and a forager. In fact, the species will eat just about anything, from seeds to carrion. Ravens are known to eat fruit, nuts, grain, bird eggs, human garbage, dung, worms and arthropods such as scorpions, beetles and other insects.

    Homeland Security Removes 5 TSA Officials Over Biden-Era Watchlist

    The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said on Sept. 30 that it removed five senior officials from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), accusing them of weaponizing a now-abolished aviation security watchlist to target innocent Americans.

    The department said in a statement that the dismissals were the result of an internal investigation into alleged abuses committed by officials, in relation to the TSA’s “Quiet Skies” program, which was scrapped by the Trump administration in June.

    DHS and TSA will be referring the matter to Congress and the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, DHS added.

    The department said that the dismissed officials had “systematically watchlisted and denied boarding to those who exercised their individual rights and resisted mask mandates on airplanes nearly six months after the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] relaxed its indoor mask mandate.”

    Homeland Security added that the TSA had used the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol protests “as an excuse to target several dozen U.S. citizens.”

    “These Americans were watchlisted and harassed despite there being no evidence of wrongdoing or illegal behavior,” the department said. “This targeted campaign of harassment continued through June 2021, six months after the events in question, despite no clear or immediate threat to aviation security.”

  9. Just The News: “Apple confirmed Thursday that it has removed multiple Immigration and Customs Enforcement tracking apps from its app store over concern about the safety of ICE agents amid an increase in violent attacks on ICE officers.

    The removal comes shortly after the suspect in a shooting at a Dallas ICE facility last month allegedly researched the app before the Sept. 24 shooting. The suspect, who allegedly intended to target ICE agents, killed two detainees.

    Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Justice Department raised the concern about the safety of ICE agents to Apple earlier Thursday and asked the company to remove the ICEBlock app, which uses crowdsourcing to report ICE movements. 

    “We reached out to Apple today demanding they remove the ICEBlock app from their App Store — and Apple did so,” Bondi told Fox News. “ICEBlock is designed to put ICE agents at risk just for doing their jobs, and violence against law enforcement is an intolerable red line that cannot be crossed. 

    “This Department of Justice will continue making every effort to protect our brave federal law enforcement officers, who risk their lives every day to keep Americans safe,” she added.

    Apple confirmed to the outlet that it removed the app and other similar ones because the store was designed to be a “safe and trusted place to discover apps.” “Based on information we’ve received from law enforcement about the safety risks associated with ICEBlock, we have removed it and similar apps from the App Store,” the company said.

    ICEBlock creator Joshua Aaron condemned the decision to remove his app, stating that allegations it was designed to harm law enforcement officers were “patently false.”

    “We are determined to fight this with everything we have,” Aaron told Fox News. “Our mission has always been to protect our neighbors from the terror this administration continues to reign down on the people of this nation.”

  10. Just The News: “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has made 1,200 arrests since the federal takeover in Washington, D.C., began in August, according to a report.

    From the start of President Trump’s term this year through July, ICE had only made 85 arrests in the nation’s capital, per data obtained by the Deportation Data Project, The New York Times reported. However, from early August until mid-September, ICE made around 1,200 arrests, according to unnamed officials, per the newspaper.

    Trump deployed federal law enforcement officers in August across Washington, D.C., to crack down on crime. ICE has worked closely with both the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Park Police, according to the Times’ review of videos filmed by witnesses. The federal agency has signed more than 520 agreements in 35 states since January that allow local law enforcement to work with federal officials on immigration enforcement during routine patrols.

    Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that immigration officials in the nation’s capital had “arrested gang members, kidnappers, drug traffickers and other violent thugs.”

    “Criminal aliens are a public safety threat, and there should be no place for sanctuary policies that place crime over the community.”

    The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to the Times’ questions about how many of the 1,200 people detained for immigration violations in the city had also been accused of committing other crimes.”

    The White House previously stated that the UFC would hold a cage match on the White House South Lawn as part of the ongoing America 250 celebrations marking the quarter-millennium anniversary of the nation’s founding.

    “Every one of our national parks, battlefields and historic sites are going to have special events in honor of ‘America250’ and I even think we’re going to have a UFC fight,” Trump said July during a speech in Iowa. “Does anybody watch UFC?     The primates gathered at the Gombe National Park in Tanzania, where Goodall spent many years closely studying chimpanzee life and behavior, bestowing upon her the highest chimp honor of flinging handfuls of their own feces through the air in reverence.

    “Ooo ooo EEE EEE AHHHH EEE!” said Chuckles, the spokeschimp for the group, in a brief statement to the media before taking his place at the end of the long line of respectful poo-throwers.

    One local primatologist provided translation for the group of mourning chimpanzees. “This is a tremendous show of respect for Ms. Goodall,” said Dr. Renee Treadwell, who has carried on Goodall’s work at the nature preserve. “Very few humans have ever been honored in such a way as to have the chimps fling their feces in memorium. Chuckles and his companions issued the following statement for me to pass along to the world: ‘We thank Jane Goodall for her friendship. It is our hope that her spirit and legacy fly as high as this poo.’ Such a beautiful sentiment.”

    Spectators crowded around the park to witness the event, with applause erupting after the ceremonial throwing of the poo. “You can tell how much they loved her,” one attendee said. “They were chucking their poop with heavy hearts.”

    At publishing time, the chimps had invited the crowd to attend the reception following the salute, where they offered to provide bananas and pick bugs out of everyone’s hair.

    ENTIRE ARTICLE: “In a social media post last week, President Trump noted that what Democrats are demanding in exchange for their cooperation in reopening government would require more than $1 trillion in spending and “force Taxpayers to fund Transgender surgery for minors.” Indeed, taxpayers are already funding such surgeries via Obamacare subsidies — and Democrats have shut the government down as they demand that Covid-era enhanced Obamacare subsidies, which expire on Dec. 31, keep flowing to insurers covering these treatments.

    Insurers Are Covering WHAT?

    Take Colorado, which requires all insurers to cover so-called “gender affirming care” as an essential health benefit. The state’s Division of Insurance lists all the surgical and hormonal treatments that insurers cover. The list, which runs the gamut from facial feminization to gluteal implantation and implantation of testicular prostheses, includes treatments that many Americans would at best find wasteful and at worst consider morally objectionable and offensive:

    Of particular note: Nothing on the Colorado website indicates that these treatments are only available to adults who have reached age 18, suggesting that insurers may be covering — and taxpayers may be paying for — procedures performed on minor children.

    Unfortunately, Colorado is not an outlier. The Movement Advancement Project notes that 24 states have “nondiscrimination” provisions in their insurance markets. In these states, insurers that cover procedures like mastectomies for breast cancer must also cover the same procedure as part of so-called “gender affirming care.”

    When individuals receive Obamacare Exchange subsidies to defray the cost of their premiums for these insurance policies, taxpayers are funding these treatments. And if Congress extends the enhanced Exchange subsidies — as Democrats have shut down the government to force Republicans to do — they will throw more taxpayer dollars toward funding these treatments.

    Executive Action Insufficient

    In June, the Trump administration finalized a rule prohibiting states from including “specified sex-trait modification procedures” in their essential health benefits, beginning next year, in an attempt to prevent taxpayer dollars from being used to fund such procedures.

    While helpful, this action has inherent limitations: First, a coalition of blue states has already filed suit challenging the rule, and a court could at any time strike down the rule for the upcoming plan year. Second, the next Democrat administration almost certainly will take action to nullify the rule if courts do not do so sooner — and indeed, could end up requiring all states to include transgender interventions in their benefit packages. Third, money is inherently fungible. Any federal dollars that subsidize the non-transgender portion of premiums will by definition make the transgender portion more affordable.

    Therefore, the only complete solution is a legislative one: Congress should specify that no federal funds may flow to plans that cover transgender procedures. This position echoes that of the pro-life community, which has said for the 15 years since Obamacare’s passage that no federal funds should go to plans that cover abortion.

    Some Republican lawmakers have suggested that “political realities” may force them to pass some type of extension of the enhanced Obamacare subsidies. But lawmakers should recognize that voting for any type of subsidy extension without addressing the transgender issue legislatively would “force Taxpayers to fund Transgender surgery,” as President Trump rightly observed.

    Abandoning one of the key issues that defined last year’s election — and giving taxpayer funds to treatments many Americans find morally objectionable — would bring with it political realities of its own.”

    The President stunned Washington by formally declaring the US is in a “non-international armed conflict” with the Latin American “terrorist organisations”. He means all the cartels, of course, but specifically he means Maduro. He doesn’t like the guy, and I’m sure the feeling is mutual.

     Maduro’s a thug and an indicted international criminal, so it’s safe to say anything we – that’s the editorial ‘we’ – do to him whether it’s in country or not, is justified.”

    In my opinion, the above quote can be applied to many endeavors in life.

    On Tuesday, a Portuguese official came to our farm to inspect our young stallion, Quartz. We are super thrilled to announce that our homebred APSL (Lusitano) stallion Quartz CAL scored 73.8 on inspection and has been approved for breeding. That score is excellent – and getting him scored is the culmination of six years of work by not just Jill and I, but many people who have helped on the farm, helped train, provided veterinary care, hoof care and more.

    It truly takes a village to create such a horse, and we are grateful to so many people.

    As “senior citizens,” Jill and I remain committed to running a farm and homestead, as well as riding regularly. We choose to ride, but whatever your exercise, staying active is key to staying healthy.

    On a personal note, the last couple of days have been brutal, with a lot of air travel and long road trips, including a drive from Austin to Dallas. Jill goes back home this evening, and I fly home tomorrow night. Jill and I are girding our loins for the next four or five weeks – the travel schedule is heavy and leaves us very little time at home.

    • In October, we travel to Brussels for me to speak in the European Parliament at the Make Europe Healthy Again Conference.
    • Then we travel to the Netherlands to speak at a Scientific Conference.
    • On October 30-31, we speak at the Brownstone Annual Conference and Gala in Salt Lake City.
    • Then, on November 4-5, we fly to West Palm Beach for a CPAC Circle Retreat and Gala at The Mar-a-Lago Club November 4-7th, 2025
    • Then to Germany to speak in the Bundestag for the AFD party, and then to Rome to speak in the Italian Senate.
    • Finally, we get to go home on November 10th.
    • November and early December continue with a lot more travel, including trips to Atlanta and Hawaii for a speaking tour.

    However, we are optimistic that by mid-December, our travel schedule will level out, and we will not be booking engagements until early spring.”

    “I am pleased to advise that I reversed the cuts made to Homeland Security and Counterterrorism for New York City and State. It was my Honor to do so. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT” he posted on Truth Social.

    The administration previously cut $187 million for counterterrorism operations in New York. Trump made the reversal after speaking with Gov. Kathy Hochul, D-N.Y., earlier this week, according to Spectrum News.

    “From the moment [Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem] tried to defund our police and counterterrorism programs, we stood up and fought back,” Hochul said in a statement. “I’m glad that [Trump] heard our call to reverse these cuts.”

    “That means $187 million for the NYPD, FDNY & first responders across the state that keep New Yorkers safe,” she added.”

  39. Just The News: “The terrorist organization Hamas on Friday said that it is ready to release all Israeli hostages and discuss President Donald Trump’s proposed peace agreement. The statement comes after Trump gave Hamas a Sundaay deadline to agree to the terms of his peace deal. 

    Hamas also signaled an agreement to give up power in the Gaza Strip as a way to end its war with Israel, according to the Associated Press. Israel has already agreed to the proposed peace plan.

    Hamas said in a statement reported by NBC News that the group “affirms its readiness to immediately enter into negotiations through the mediators to discuss the details of this agreement. The movement also renews its agreement to hand over the administration of the Gaza Strip to a Palestinian body of independents (technocrats), based on Palestinian national consensus and Arab and Islamic support.”

    Trump warned the group earlier Friday that if it did not agree to his terms, then Israel had the full support of his administration to “finish the job of destroying the threat of Hamas.”

    The plan is expected to end the Middle Eastern war and all hostages dead and alive are expected to be released by Hamas within 72 hours.”

  40. Just The News: “Sean “Diddy” Combs was sentenced in New York City on Friday to over four years in prison for two counts of transportation for the purposes of prostitution. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian of the Southern District of New York, a Biden appointee, sentenced the hip-hop mogul to 50 months in prison.

    While federal prosecutors argued that Combs should receive at least 11 years in prison, his lawyers asked for a maximum sentence of 14 months, with credit for time served, ABC News reported. He has already spent 12 months at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, which means that a 14-month sentence would have ended in December.

    In July, Combs was found not guilty on count one, racketeering conspiracy, which was the heaviest charge he faced. The jury had recessed the day before without coming to a verdict on that charge, but after having reached a verdict on the other charges.

    He was found not guilty of count two, the sex trafficking of former girlfriend Casandra Ventura; found guilty of count three, the Mann Act transportation of Ventura; found not guilty of count four, the sex trafficking of former girlfriend “Jane”; and found guilty of count five, the Mann Act transportation of “Jane.”

    Combs wrote a letter to the judge on Thursday asking for “another chance to be a better father, another chance to be a better son, another chance to be a better leader in my community, and another chance to live a better life.”

    “First and foremost, I want to apologize and say how sincerely sorry I am for all of the hurt and pain that I have caused others by my conduct,” he wrote. “I take full responsibility and accountability for my past wrongs.”

    Combs said that the “old me died in jail and a new version of me was reborn,” promising not to make the same mistakes again. The letter also mentioned Casandra “Cassie” Ventura and another woman who testified against him at his trial under the pseudonym “Jane.” 

    “The scene and images of me assaulting Cassie play over and over in my head daily,” he wrote, appearing to reference a 2016 security video that showed him hitting and kicking Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel hallway. “I literally lost my mind. I was dead wrong for putting my hands on the woman that I loved.”

    “I thought I was providing for Jane concerning her and her child, but after hearing her testimony, I realized that I hurt her,” Combs wrote.”

    HUGE WIN in SCOTUS on Admin efforts to terminate “Temp Protective Status” for nearly 700,000 Venezuelans. I’ve written previously about this fight.

    The Supreme Court today blocked San Fran District Judge Order, upheld by Ninth Cir., that DHS Sec. Noem lacked authority to vacate PRIOR DHS Sec. extension of TPS status thru Oct. 2026.

    BUT this is even bigger in terms of the fight over health care for illegals.

    One way the Biden Admin evaded the prohibition on health care for illegals was to classify everyone in the US on TPS as being “lawfully present” and therefore not covered by the prohibition on health care for illegal. So the 700,000 Venezuelans could get Medicaid.

    Now all 700,000+ Venezuelans in the US who were — and no longer are — covered by TPS are no longer eligible for Medicaid.

  42. Just The News: “Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee on Friday gave the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council just 14 days to assign a new prosecutor to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ 2020 Georgia election interference case or the case will be dismissed.

    McAfee said he would dismiss the case against all of the defendants, which includes President Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani.

    The Georgia Court of Appeals having disqualified the entirety of the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office from further handling of this case, the duty falls on the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council to identify a replacement,” he wrote in the order. “Should an appointed prosecuting attorney or representative of PAC fail to file an entry of appearance or request a particularized extension within 14 days from the entry of this Notice, the Court will issue a dismissal without prejudice for want of prosecution.”
