North Carolina State Mammal: Squirrel

North Carolina shares the squirrel as their state mammal with Kentucky, so we’ve already covered this interesting but annoying little creature.  And we also covered National Squirrel Appreciation Day in January (along with the saga of Peanut), so this month, we’re going in a completely different direction.  On the georgiawildlifeblog, I found this article listing 5 recipes using squirrels.  I am only presenting names and pictures of the dishes.  If you’d like the actually recipes, please click on the link listed.

From: georgiawildlifeblog:

Squirrels are everywhere! In fact, they’re the most common species in Georgia. They also happen to be pretty dang tasty. No seriously, don’t knock it til you try it. With the longest season of any species in Georgia (Aug. 15 thru Feb. 28) and a bag limit of 12 per day, you can quickly bring home enough tree rat meat to try all of these delicious recipes.

Need your hunting license before you hit your local Wildlife Management Area (WMA) grocery store? You can grab that here.

      1. I know how she feels about them lol

We’re good. The tornado missed us but we hail quarter to almost 1.5 inches. Plants look like they’ve been in a war zone so we got lucky.

        How are you?
The site would not let me log in for days ….

        1. I do have to say, tho – many years ago, some people to whom I had rented my basement apartment went hunting for a deer and served the shredded meat as Fajitas that tasted good since it didn’t have that wild taste.

Just a quick update on yesterday’s tornado in St Louis. Survey teams are still out assessing the situation, but we have preliminarily determined that the tornado was at least EF-3 (140+ mph) and up to 1 mile wide at times.

    1. Good morning, Pat! 40 here this morning, breezy but clear, thankfully. If I don’t hear from Jason today, I’m definitely going to fire them and go with the new company. At a minimum, he could have the decency to at least return my call, FFS!

Dan Scavino just posted “In the Air Tonight” at exactly 8:08 PM.

    That’s not a vibe.
    That’s a timestamp.

    August 8, 2022 — 8/08 — was the day the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago.
The day the deep state crossed the Rubicon.
The day the counterattack was authorized.

Now, 21 months later, Scavino posts:

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life…”

    Nostalgia…nah
    This is a war post.
    And the moment?
    It’s here.

I don’t think it’s so much “black fatigue” as it is POS fatigue which you can see in various races.

For instance, white people are sick of Antifa and radical leftists who coat their entitlement and destruction with pseudo-morality. Hispanic people don’t like border hoppers who leach off the system any more than any other race.

It’s not a racial thing we’re sick of, it’s just people who act like damned fools who were encouraged by a system that rewards damn fool behavior.

  4. Just The News: “A Mexican Navy training vessel struck the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on Saturday night, injuring several people and triggering a massive emergency response, according to local officials and the Mexican government.

A total of 19 people were injured, including four seriously, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said. All the injuries were on the ship, and the bridge did not suffer any major damage and was reopened after a structural inspection, Adams said. No victims were thrown into the water, officials said.

New York police and fire departments and the Coast Guard responded “to an incident at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge,” the New York City emergency services department said on social media.

The Mexican Navy confirmed the accident in a post on social media. “During the departure maneuver of the Cuauhtémoc Sailboat in New York, an incident occurred with the Brooklyn Bridge that caused damage to the Training Ship, temporarily preventing the continuation of the training cruise,” it reported on X.

Video on local television showed the Mexican vessel near the base of the bridge and a tugboat trying to assist it.”

  5. I watched the Preakness yesterday – Journalism won in a blaze of speed at the end, after being badly fowled by another horse coming down the stretch. Three horses across and there was plenty of room for him to come up the middle but the outside horse slammed into him, almost knocked both of them off their feet. It was REALLY bad but he recovered and powered ahead at the end. That horse has guts, no doubt about it!!! I hope the other jockey gets set down for an extended period – it looked like he purposely guided his horse into Journalism, trying to close the gap. Sovereignty wasn’t in the race.

    1. we totally forgot to watch it, but when i told hubby what you wrote–he said we’ve got to watch that. he found a video—my goodness that horse was flying at the end!!!!!
if Sovereignty is back for the Belmont it could be a wild race!

  6. Just The News: ” A car bomb outside a Palm Springs, Calif., fertility clinic that killed one and injured four was an intentional act of terrorism, the FBI declared Saturday night. Special Agent Akil David, the assistant director for the FBI office Los Angeles, said the blast shortly before 11 AM PT damaged buildings over a wide radius and was targeted. It was an “intentional act of terrorism,” David said.

Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Miles said the victim had not yet been identified. “Terrorism came knocking on the door of Palm Springs,” Miles said in a news conference. “We survived, and I can tell you that this city will rise and be more effective as a beacon of hope than before.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi said federal agents were working to gather evidence. “Let me be clear: the Trump administration understands that women and mothers are the heartbeat of America. Violence against a fertility clinic is unforgivable,” Bondi said.

The American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic said no staff members were injured and that some of its fertility equipment was spared in the blast.

“This morning, an unexpected and tragic incident occurred outside our Palm Springs facility when a vehicle exploded in the parking lot near our building,” the company wrote on Facebook. “We are heartbroken to learn that this event claimed a life and caused injuries, and our deepest condolences go out to the individuals and families affected.”

  7. Same old, same old blather about the earth’s resources and the poor….

Just The News: “Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural mass at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday drew about 200,000 people, according to the Vatican. Vice President JD Vance, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, were among the world leaders who traveled to Rome to attend.

During the mass, Pope Leo called for unity in the Catholic Church as well as peace in Ukraine, Gaza and Myanmar.

“We are called to offer God’s love to everyone,in order toachieve that unity which does not cancel out differences but values the personal history of each person and the social and religious culture of every people,” he said.

According to ABC News, he also said that there is “too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and the economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalizes the poorest.”

  8. Just The News: “Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have captured several more illegal immigrants with a history of violent crime sanctuary cities and towns, officials told Just the News. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said ICE agents in Boston on May 15 detained Manuel Seberiano Garcia-Munoz, a 32-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico who was previously deported.

Garcia-Munoz illegally entered the U.S. again and was arrested and convicted for assault with a deadly weapon, which carried a sentence of 4 years in prison, according to DHS.

On the same day, several other illegal immigrants with criminal records were detained, including Jose Reyes Alvarez, a 28-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador and allegedly a member of the MS-13 gang, DHS said. He was arrested in Evertt, Mass., for driving a motor vehicle without a license. ICE Los Angeles detained him May 15, officials said.

ICE agents in Newark on May 15 arrested Oscar Juracan, 32, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala with a criminal history that includes an “aggravated sexual assault-during robbery” conviction, according to DHS. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison. DHS said he will stay in custody pending deportation proceedings.

On May 15, ICE agents in Philadelphia arrested Tito Flores-Gonzalez, a 27-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico who was “voluntarily deported back to Mexico twice by United States Border Patrol,” the agency said.

On January 15, 2025, the Delaware State Police arrested him for “attempted kidnapping in the second degree, terroristic threatening, harassment and offensive touching,” DHS said. He was ultimately found guilty and reminds in ICE custody pending removal proceedings, the agency said.

“These sanctuary politicians are playing Russian roulette with American lives. While sanctuary politicians in places like Philadelphia, Boston, Newark, and California work to thwart ICE, DHS will continue arresting criminal illegal aliens and getting them out of our country,” Assistant Homeland Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Just the News in a statement.

“Radical sanctuary politicians need to put the safety of the American people first—not criminal illegal aliens. No American wants criminal illegal aliens loose on America’s streets and neither should our leaders who represent them,” McLaughlin added.

Border Czar Tom Homan said on Friday that there has been a 96.7% decrease in illegal border crossings under President Trump and that the drug cartels are “going broke,” according to a report from The Center Square.

Homan said that President Trump gave him three main objectives in his position, including securing the border, spearheading “the biggest deportation operation the country’s ever seen” and finding the over 290,000 non-citizen children the Department of Homeland Security had reported missing in May 2024.”

Makes sense to me. Ya hear stories all the time about these people paying ‘coyotes’ to smuggle them in – why not pay us instead?”

  12. “As the Deputy Director of the FBI, I am charged, standing with Director Patel, with managing the most powerful law enforcement agency in the world. The Director and I are also responsible for looking at grave mistakes made by people within the FBI in the past, and ensuring they never happen again.

And while the FBI does not have primary investigative responsibility for investigating threats against the POTUS, and we do not make prosecutorial decisions, we do have the ability and authority to support other federal agencies for violations of federal law. And we certainly have a responsibility to comment on matters involving former FBI officials, and allegations of law-breaking.

That said, former FBI Director James Comey brought shame to the FBI badge, yet again, this past week. The Director and I spend an inordinate amount of time cleaning up messes left behind by former Director Comey. And his latest actions are no exception.

As I’ve stated in the past, I cannot post openly about all the things the Director and I are doing to reform the enterprise, but I assure you, they are happening. Sadly, many of those agenda items are the result of former Director Comey’s poor decision making and atrocious leadership. And to those who doubt me, I assure you, when you see what the Director and I see from the inside, it’s even worse. I’m addressing this now, rather than on our interview with Maria Bartiromo tomorrow, because we recorded that interview earlier in the week prior to the incident with Comey.

God bless America, and all those who defend Her.”

    1. EXCERPT: “…..Bartkus explained in his twisted recording that he’s “angry” that he even exists. He also tried to videotape the attack:

“I figured I would just make a recording explaining why I’ve decided to bomb an IVF building, or clinic,” he said at the beginning of the recording. “Basically, it just comes down to I’m angry that I exist and that, you know, nobody got my consent to bring me here.”

Describing himself as anti-life, he adds: “I’m very against [IVF], it’s extremely wrong. These are people who are having kids after they’ve sat there and thought about it. How much more stupid can it get?”

Bartkus also set up a tripod with a camera in an effort to film his attack, but the file failed to upload to his website.

His demented website can be found here, according to some reports, and on it he describes some disturbing actions:

In a FAQ section of his website, he further explains that his best friend Sophie recently died after convincing her boyfriend to shoot her while she slept. “IIRC we had agreed that if one of us died, the other would probably soon follow,” Bartkus wrote.

His description seemed to match the death of 27-year-old Sophie Tinney in Fox Island, Washington on April 22. Police arrested her boyfriend, 29-year-old Lars Eugene Nelson, and believe Tinney convinced Nelson to shoot her in the head as she slept. Nelson was charged with second-degree murder.

Bartkus is believed to be the only person who was killed in Saturday’s bombing at American Reproductive Centers, though officials have yet to formally identify his remains.

As we reported earlier, authorities have officially declared the attack an act of terror.

This was the twisted act of a twisted mind, but we can be grateful that the results were not worse. An explosion of that size in a crowded area would have had devastating results. Presumably, the focus of the investigation will be to find out how such an erratic person was able to engineer or get such a device—and nobody seems to have noticed.”

  16. “According to National Geographic Magazine, this is not photoshop or camera trickery. It’s a real, live orchid. The monkey orchid, also known as Dracula simia, is native to the cloud forests of Central and South America, particularly in Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia:

~Monkey orchids thrive in cool, moist, humid conditions at high altitudes. They are epiphytic, meaning they grow in the crotches of trees, or terrestrial, meaning they grow in humus-rich soils on forest floors. They get most of their nutrients from detritus and moisture from the air.

~The flowers smell like ripe oranges.

~In the misty cloud forests the Orchid Monkey surprises explorers with its blooming flower with a face, complete with haunted eyes and nose.

~This surreal nature creation seems to look back, blurring the line between plant and animal into a mesmerizing botanical illusion. How cool is that?”

BREAKING: In a bombshell joint interview on Sunday Morning Futures, FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino tore into the Bureau’s former leadership, accusing James Comey, Andrew McCabe, and others of “lying to federal courts,” hiding evidence, and weaponizing the FBI against political opponents. They pledged an imminent “wave of transparency” and insisted: “We’re not asking you to trust us. We’re showing you the receipts.”

  18. True Story:

Yes, fluoride, specifically in the form of fluorosilicic acid and other fluoride compounds, was historically a byproduct of industrial processes, particularly phosphate fertilizer production. In the early 20th century, the phosphate industry generated substantial amounts of fluoride-containing waste, which was initially released into the environment, resulting in pollution.

Rather than disposing of it as hazardous waste, processes were developed to capture and repurpose these compounds, including their use in water fluoridation, which began in the 1940s.

This practice disposed of an industrial byproduct, otherwise known as a toxic waste product, into the environment without incurring any disposal costs.
