Montana State Mammal: Grizzly Bear

Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) are a subspecies of the brown bear (Ursus arctos) found in inland Northern America. They are famous for their large size, weighing up to 360kg, and their often aggressive nature. They are apex predators, hunting large prey such as caribou, but they are also very opportunistic. They will eat carrion (already dead animals), salmon, berries and even clams. Their strong front legs are adapted both for running fast to catch prey, and for digging and foraging. They are primarily solitary, except for mothers with cubs. However, as many as 20 individuals can come together to hunt salmon that are moving upstream to spawn. Females live for around 26 years, which is longer than males who live for around 22 years on average.

Interesting Grizzly Bear Facts

1 They are a subspecies of the brown bear.

Grizzly bears are considered a subspecies of the brown bear (Ursus arctos). The main difference between them is in diet and geography. Brown bears are mainly coastal with access to marine foods, whereas grizzlies live further inland.

2 They are called “grizzly” both for their fur and their nature.

Their hair is grizzled, meaning silver tipped. However, it is believed they originally got their name after the word “grisly” meaning gruesome or scary. Their scientific classification ‘Ursus arctos horribilis‘ was also named after their ‘horrifying’ reputation by a naturalist in 1815.

3 They are apex predators.

This means they are at the top of the food chain. They hunt large mammals, such as moose, caribou, and bison, using their speed and strength to catch them.

4 Grizzly bears are also very opportunistic eaters.

They’ll also eat carrion (things that are already dead), forage for berries, dig into sand for razor clams, eat grass, and go fishing in rivers.

5 They come together to hunt salmon.

Every year grizzlies gather to fish for the salmon that are swimming upstream to spawn. As many as 20 can be seen in one spot, where they often catch salmon leaping out of the water with their paws.

6 They are huge.

Average length of grizzly bears is around 2 meters, with females weighing 130-180kg and males 180-360kg. However, some huge male grizzlies have been reported to stand as high as 3 meters (9.8 ft) and weighing up to 680kg!

7 They have a distinctive hump on their back.

This hump is actually a large muscle which controls their forearms.

8 Grizzlies claws are as long as human fingers.

They are up to 4 inches long.

9 They can run at 30 miles an hour.

Despite their large size, they can move fast. The large hump on their shoulders powers their fast-moving front legs. This is why they tell you if you bump into a grizzly, don’t try and run from it!

10 They hibernate for 5-7 months every year.

They’re well known for their hibernating habits. Bears will dig large dens which they curl up in to sleep for the coldest months of the year. However, bears in sunny California don’t hibernate as it’s not needed.

11 They give birth while hibernating.

Female grizzly bears give birth while hibernating. The grizzly cubs will stay in the den drinking milk until the end of winter.

12 They don’t become pregnant straight away.

Via a process of “delayed implantation”, embryos are stored until the mother has gained enough weight for hibernation.

13 They eat a lot of food before they hibernate.

They don’t eat while they’re hibernating, so they eat as much food as possible beforehand. Bears can gain as much as 400lb in weight before going into hibernation.

14 Grizzly bears don’t pee or poop during hibernation.

Throughout the whole of the 5-7 months they don’t go to the bathroom. They are actually able to turn excess urea (a component of urine) back into protein, meaning they actually gain muscle while hibernating.

15 Mama bears are fierce.

Mothers with young cubs will be very protective of their young, including fighting off larger male bears.

16 They will nurse their cubs for up to 3 years.

A mother will keep her cubs with her for as many as three years.

17 They need a lot of space.

Grizzlies in general range over large areas, as much as 1500 square km (~600 square miles). Males have large territories, which females roam through.

18 They are more dangerous to humans than sharks.

While sharks get all the media attention, bear attacks on humans are actually more common and numbers are actually on the rise. However, grizzly bears normally avoid contact with people and rarely actively hunt humans. Many of these attacks occur when people accidentally stumble upon mother bears with cubs. The rise in attacks is thought to be due to growing human use of grizzly bear habitat, and ‘problem bears’ who have associated humans with having potential ‘food’ near to them.

19 Grizzlies and wolves are competitors.

In places where the two overlap, like Yellowstone Park, they often compete fiercely over food.

20 They are a conservation success story.

Human expansion into grizzly habitat led to huge numbers in their decline, however after they were declared protected by the law in the USA, their numbers have bounced back.

      1. Good mornin’ Pat and Filly!

I do not want to go anywhere near Grizzly country. Florida has little black bears, but nothing as big or fierce as a Grizzly.

I can remember when a bear skin rug was commonly seen in front of backwoods cabin fireplaces. And the song popular in my childhood said, ‘Davy Crockett killed him a bar when he was only three.’

black bears have a distinctive odor–the deer can smell a long ways off and scram when they get a whiff. i’m sure when they make a rug they deodorize but i still wouldn’t want a dead animal laying on my floor or it’s head on my wall.

  2. Presidential Actions
EMERGENCY MEASURES TO PROVIDE WATER RESOURCES IN CALIFORNIA AND IMPROVE DISASTER RESPONSE IN CERTAIN AREAS
    EXECUTIVE ORDER
    January 24, 2025

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:

Section 1. Policy. For weeks, residents of the Los Angeles area have watched raging fires consume their homes, belongings, beloved pets, and childhood memories. Almost immediately, firefighters were unable to fight the blaze due to dry hydrants, empty reservoirs, and inadequate water infrastructure. Today, at least 28 people have lost their lives and thousands more have lost everything else, with some damage estimates calculating hundreds of billions of dollars in damage.

This tragedy affects the entire Nation, so it is in the Nation’s interest to ensure that California has what it needs to prevent and fight these fires and others in the future. Therefore, it is the policy of the United States to provide Southern California with necessary water resources, notwithstanding actively harmful State or local policies. And it is the policy of the United States to assist Americans in disaster areas through responsive policies that more effectively empower them to rebuild and regain their livelihoods.

Sec. 2. Overriding Disastrous California Policies. (a) The Secretary of Defense, the Attorney General, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Secretary of Commerce, the Secretary of the Interior, and the Secretary of Agriculture shall expeditiously take all measures, consistent with all applicable authorities, to ensure adequate water resources in Southern California. Each shall report to me within 15 days on all authorities, including emergency authorities, available to ensure, require, maintain, or use infrastructure necessary to fight and prevent massive wildfires in Southern California.

    (b) In particular, the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Commerce shall immediately take actions to override existing activities that unduly burden efforts to maximize water deliveries. The Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Commerce shall consider actions including those consistent with the “No Action Alternative” in the Final Environmental Impact Statement issued November 15, 2024, by the Bureau of Reclamation on Long-term Operation of the Central Valley Project and State Water Project.

    (c) The Secretary of the Interior, including through the Bureau of Reclamation, shall utilize his discretion to operate the CVP to deliver more water and produce additional hydropower, including by increasing storage and conveyance, and jointly operating federal and state facilities, to high-need communities, notwithstanding any contrary State or local laws. The Bureau of Reclamation shall take all available measures to ensure that State agencies — including the California Department of Water Resources — do not interfere with the Bureau of Reclamation’s operation of the project to maximize water delivery to high-need communities or otherwise, including but not limited to the issuance of a new Record of Decision maximizing water deliveries and consistent with the 2020 Record of Decision.

    (d) In accordance with section 6 of the Executive Order of January 20, 2025 (Declaring a National Energy Emergency), the Secretary of the Interior, through the Bureau of Reclamation, and in accordance with section 1536 of title 16 United States Code, shall expedite action related to any exemption under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA), 16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq., for the Long-Term Operation of the CVP and the State Water Project for all applicable threatened and endangered species.

    (e) The Secretary of the Interior shall promptly review, revise, or rescind any regulations or procedures specific to implementation of section 1536 of title 16 United States Code, as needed and consistent with applicable law, to conform with the plain meaning of the statute.

    (f) The Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Commerce shall identify all ongoing or potential major water-supply and storage projects within the State of California for which they have joint responsibility under the ESA or individual responsibilities under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA), 42 U.S.C. 4321 et seq.

    (g) For each such project identified under subsection (f), the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Commerce shall each designate one federal official to coordinate each agency’s respective NEPA and ESA compliance responsibilities. Within 30 days from the date of this order, each designated official shall identify any regulatory hurdles that unduly burden each respective water project, identify any recent changes in state or Federal law that may impact such projects from a regulatory perspective (including Public Law 118-5), and shall develop a proposed plan, for review by the Secretaries, to appropriately suspend, revise, or rescind any regulations or procedures that unduly burden such projects and are not necessary to protect the public interest or otherwise comply with the law. In so doing, each designated federal official will coordinate and share all appropriate information that will enable improved efficiencies. For the purposes of this order, “unduly burden” means to unnecessarily obstruct, delay, curtail, impede or otherwise impose significant costs on the permitting, utilization, transmission, delivery, or supply of water resources and water infrastructure.

Sec. 3. Ending the Subsidization of California’s Mismanagement. (a) The Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) shall review all Federal programs, projects, and activities for all relevant agencies that impact land management, water availability, water supply, water storage and delivery, water infrastructure, and disaster preparedness and response.

    (b) Within 30 days of the date of this order, to ensure that State and local jurisdictions promote sensible land management practices and reliable water supply for all Americans, the Secretary of the Interior, the Secretary of Agriculture, and the Secretary of Commerce shall jointly report to the President, through the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy and Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, regarding California State and local policies or practices inconsistent with sound disaster prevention and response.

    (c) The Director of OMB, in consultation with the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy and Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, shall recommend appropriate action to the President, regarding:

    (i) any lack of compliance by California with the terms of existing Federal grants, contracts, or other financial assistance to States or localities; and

(ii) beneficial additional terms that may be added with respect to any future Federal programs, projects, or activities to ensure sound disaster prevention and response.

Sec. 4. Additional Actions to Help Los Angeles Families. (a) Housing Displaced Families. The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and the Secretary of Homeland Security, through the Administrator of FEMA, shall expeditiously provide an Integrated Federal Housing Strategy and Implementation Plan to the Director of OMB and the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs that expedites options for housing relief to survivors displaced by wildfires in California.

    (b) Expediting Waste Removal. Within 5 days from the date of this order, to accelerate the rebuilding of areas devastated by the recent Los Angeles wildfires, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Homeland Security, through the Administrator of FEMA, and the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency shall develop and execute a plan to expedite the bulk removal of contaminated and general debris.

    (c) Effectively Using Grants to Improve Fire Preparedness. The Secretary of Homeland Security, through the Administrator of FEMA, shall immediately implement a plan to enable the timely and appropriate use of Federal preparedness grants for the City of Los Angeles. As of the date of this order, the city has yet to use the majority of its $213 million allotment that has accrued since fiscal year 2021. These Federal preparedness grants shall not be used to support illegal aliens. The Attorney General, in coordination with the FEMA Administrator, shall investigate the misuse of these grants by the City of Los Angeles and take appropriate action to address such misuse.

Sec. 5. Additional Actions to Help North Carolina Families. (a) Clearing Roads. To accelerate rebuilding and community recovery, the Secretary of Transportation, the Secretary of Homeland Security, acting through the Administrator of FEMA, and the Administrator of the Small Business Administration shall immediately take all necessary and appropriate measures, including through direct assistance, loans, and other available means, to expedite roadway clearance or rebuilding, including the section of Interstate 40 in North Carolina that remains closed, and the repair or rebuilding of roads and bridges on private property in areas of North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene.

    (b) Housing Displaced Families. The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and the Secretary of Homeland Security, through the Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, shall immediately provide an Integrated Federal Housing Strategy and Implementation Plan to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget and the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs that expedites options for housing relief to survivors displaced by Hurricane Helene.

Sec. 6. General Provisions. (a) Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:

    (i) the authority granted by law to an executive department or agency, or the head thereof; or

(ii) the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.

    (b) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.

    (c) This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

  6. ELIMINATE USAID!!!

Just The News: “A private congressional funding notice reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon found that the Biden administration sent $15 million of taxpayer money to Afghanistan to distribute “oral contraceptives and condoms.”

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) earmarked the award last July and transmitted the funds to Afghanistan in August, the Beacon reported on Monday. The money was part of a larger $100 million package for the Middle Eastern country that was meant to support the “basic rights and freedoms” of women and girls who were living under Taliban rule.

The government agency admitted that the funds would include some coordination with the Taliban, for “programmatic purposes,” which could be a violation of U.S. law. The law bans the U.S. from sending money to the Taliban, but the agency said the money would not directly benefit the terrorist organization.

“Although some coordination will be necessary for programmatic purposes, USAID and its partners are clear that there will be no direct assistance to the Taliban,” the notice read. “Due diligence will continue to be exercised to ensure compliance with OFAC sanctions and statutory restrictions on assistance to the Taliban and that programs have robust safeguards in place to prevent Taliban interference or diversion.”

The funding was allocated just months before a federal oversight body monitoring the multibillion-dollar investment in Afghanistan determined the government had failed to adequately combat gender-based violence within the country.

The revelation of the funding comes after Trump placed a 90-day pause on foreign aid in order to review and evaluate all foreign assistance programs. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast is also reassessing the State Department’s nearly $90 billion budget, in order to trim unnecessary expenses.

“We will be doing a full State Department reauthorization,” Mast said during a recent congressional roundtable discussion. “We will wake up, eat, sleep, and breathe to root out waste in the State Department and make America the partner of choice.”

  7. Just The News: “President Donald Trump’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on Monday ordered a massive freeze on all federal aid programs outside of Social Security, Medicare and other assistance that goes directly to individuals.

The two-page memo, which is set to take effect on Tuesday night, could impact lower-income households that rely on Medicaid, school breakfast and lunch programs; Section 8 rental assistance, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, according to Roll Call. The memo also noted that the OMB can grant exceptions to the order on a case-by-case basis.

“The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve,” the office wrote in the memo.

“Career and political appointees in the Executive Branch have a duty to align Federal spending and action with the will of the American people as expressed through Presidential priorities,” the memo continued. “This memorandum requires Federal agencies to identify and review all Federal financial assistance programs and supporting activities consistent with the President’s policies and requirements.”

The federal programs impacted will each be assigned a “senior political appointee to ensure Federal financial assistance conforms to Administrative priorities.” Reports from those individuals will be due Feb. 10.”

Just The News: “The Department of Justice’s top career official for public corruption resigned Monday after the Trump administration reassigned him to handle immigration matters, the New York Times reported on Monday, citing the resignation letter.

Corey Amundson had served in the DOJ for more than two decades.

“I spent my entire professional life committed to the apolitical enforcement of federal criminal law and to ensuring that those around me understood and embraced that central tenet of our work,” he wrote to acting Attorney General James McHenry.

His resignation comes as the Trump team works to overhaul the DOJ amid allegations of political weaponization. Trump himself has furiously criticized the department over its handling of prosecutions against him.

Last week, the Trump administration reassigned him to a group dedicated to dealing with sanctuary cities.”

  11. EXCERPT: “It looks like Acting Attorney General James McHenry isn’t going to waste a second of his time at the helm of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), and he apparently has former Special Counsel Jack Smith on his mind.

On Monday, McHenry issued memos to at least a dozen Smith staffers informing them that their services were no longer needed at the DOJ. The subject line of the memo read “Notice of Removal from Federal Service,” and in it, the acting AG took the staffers to task for their blatant partisanship against Trump, which, he said, now rendered them useless to the federal government.

“You played a significant role in prosecuting President Trump. The proper functioning of government critically depends on the trust superior officials place in their subordinates,” McHenry wrote. “Given your significant role in prosecuting the President, I do not believe that the leadership of the Department can trust you to assist in implementing the President’s agenda faithfully.”

McHenry referred to Article II of the U.S. Constitution and the “laws of the United States” when informing the staffers that their jobs had been eliminated and they were hereby “removed from federal service effective immediately.” A Justice Department official told Fox News Digital that the action “is consistent with the mission of ending the weaponization of government.”

Corporate media, naturally, went into fret mode at the news of their ideological brethren being unceremoniously shown the door…..”

  13. EXCERPT: “Not surprisingly, tackling the myriad illegal immigration issues he inherited from Joe Biden has been one of the top priorities of President Donald Trump upon returning to office for his second term. Already, Trump’s executive orders and other directives have ushered forth, among other things, changes in official terminology (bye-bye, “undocumented noncitizen”), as well as the arrival of the U.S. military at the southern border.

Further, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has partnered up with related federal agencies in rounding up criminal elements across the country. Along with that, repatriation flights full of illegal immigrants are also underway.

Not surprisingly, blue city mayors are crying foul, especially those from so-called sanctuary cities where elected officials admittedly breaking the law in the name of “inclusiveness” and woke has oftentimes resulted in tragic outcomes. But as it turns out, these mayors have something else to be worried about: the long arm of the House Oversight Committee which, under the direction of its Chairman, Rep. James Comer (R-KY), has called on four of them to testify next month.

Comer posted this message Monday on his Twitter/X page:

I am launching a @GOPoversight investigation into sanctuary cities across the United States and their impact on public safety. I’m calling on the Mayors of Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City to testify publicly at an oversight hearing on February 11, 2025.

These sanctuary cities have refused to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement and U.S. immigration laws.

On his first day in office, President Donald Trump took decisive actions to restore the rule of law. It is now imperative that our immigration laws are enforced across the country and that criminal aliens are swiftly removed from our communities.

The mayors who were invited to testify were Chicago’s Brandon Johnson, Boston’s Michelle Wu, New York City’s Eric Adams, and Denver’s Mike Johnston. In his letter to all four mayors, Comer indicated that the goal of the hearings was to assess if new legislation would be needed:….”

  14. “Trump Proved Democrats Want A Permanent Underclass Of Illegal Migrants To Exploit”

The Federalist, Adam B. Coleman (reprint from WrongSpeak), January 28, 2025

    border enforcement

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “I can’t think of any other logical reason the Biden administration and other mainstream Democrats want illegal immigration other than wanting a permanent underclass that they can underpay, mistreat, and exploit with no repercussions. Democrats have catered to the elites, and keeping illegal migrants only benefits the top of the economic pyramid.

They want foreign nationals teased about having an “American Dream” who will never achieve it because it would hurt their donors’ bottom line. I believe the “pathway to citizenship” discussion was meant to be the next wedge issue that will never be resolved, but every politician could run on pretending that they care about their manufactured underclass.

That goes back to what I’ve been saying for years now and what pushed me away from the Democratic Party: The Democrats are engaging in class warfare as they find a way to make money off of the “never citizens” while distracting the American citizen.

The remix narrative is that those poor, unfortunate illegal immigrants are taking American jobs instead of the truth that corporate interests and conniving corporatists prefer hiring cheap labor that they can abuse to increase profits for themselves and their shareholders.

The illegal immigrants are fed a lie that convinces them to risk their lives to come here, and American citizens are given a new enemy so the economic elite have their scapegoat. It’s rather genius. You’re now angrier at the poor man who’s chasing a lie than the people who created the fable for them to believe in.

Some of the extra profit created by exploiting illegal labor ends up in the pockets of the political establishment. Your job wasn’t shipped overseas by accident.

I’m always careful about saying that something was done purposefully because it ignores the possibility of it being done out of sheer incompetence. However, for President Donald Trump to have such a massive impact in a matter of days has convinced me that former President Joe Biden could have done the same but chose not to.

On day one, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) knew exactly where to go, which means they had been put on a leash. Why would we stop immigration enforcement from picking up dangerous foreign nationals on our soil?

Why is the mayor of Newark angry that ICE raided a small business in his city? Easy: Because the city benefits from an illegal workforce. Everyone is on the take. The more businesses, the more tax revenue and the bigger the budget the city gets. Everyone looks the other way. But now that people see the game at hand, the players don’t like that someone is messing with their money.

I voted for Trump, but I’m always skeptical about whether any politician will do what he says. They usually do some of it and people get too distracted by winning points against their political opponents to fix desperate problems that require attention. But I did not expect this tenacity right away. I did not expect Trump to take it as seriously as he is. Illegal immigration is terrible for everyone involved, including the illegals who are here.

No one should have to live in the shadows of a society, wondering if tomorrow will be the day they are taken away. No one should be used up and thrown away when they get injured on the job and forced to work perpetually because they have no retirement. Having people live in the shadows of our society helps no one in the long run.

On the flip side, illegal immigration eats at the wages of American citizens and usurps a legal process to bring people into this country that’s a net positive. Open borders close economic opportunities. Decades ago, some of today’s low-skill labor jobs that now pay minimum wage were considered decent-paying working-class jobs that could help support an American family.

You can tell how desperate Democrats are to keep the status quo because they want you to forget the past and believe that getting rid of their underclass would mean that no American citizen would want to do their “undesirable” jobs. Americans have been gaslit by the political establishment, economic elite, and top Democrats.

I’m far from being a Trump sycophant, as I don’t trust any politician to keep his word. But Trump has already proved his point in a matter of days: They wanted the destruction of our country and he’s here to prevent it.”

      1. I run into a lot of that at WM in Norfolk – a LOT of Hispanics there, a majority of the employees, I would guess. And yes, I thought that very thing when I was there last week: incredibly rude to chatter between them in Spanish, especially immediately after I had asked one of them for something….and she didn’t understand what I wanted. SMH – I can see now, tho, that I have become somewhat de-sensitized because what I REALLY feel is gratitude that it’s not Arabic!!!

  15. Trump Commands GIGANTIC Swing in Voter Trust, Especially In This Area

Americans increasingly say they trust President Donald J. Trump and the Republican Party over Democrats to handle the U.S. immigration crisis.

In January 2025, polling data shows the Republican Party holds a 22-point margin in terms of being trusted to address immigration problems, a marked shift from 2017 when Democrats held an 11-point advantage.

“I just want to note how different things are from where we were when Donald Trump first took office and how much more the American people are on the side of Republicans than they were eight years ago,” CNN data analysis Harry Enten explained during a recent segment. He continued:

“You go back to April 2017—look at this—the Democrats held an 11-point advantage over Republicans. So Americans were not liking what Donald Trump and the Republican Party was doing back at the beginning of his first term.” – National Pulse

Our Take: On the Macro, Trump isn’t so much going to war with the concept of “Administration” … he’s simply proving it has no power. From dismantling the US Administrative State to bypassing the EU to deal directly with foreign leaders, Trump is reminding the people they ARE the power.

The bureaucracy was never legitimate. It doesn’t have to be torn apart limb from limb (though it will be,) it simply needs to be ignored. Mandate can be lent by the people to their leaders. It can also be taken away.

So, where it concerns those who would seek to govern those leaders, and by extension, the people who chose them to represent their sovereign will, that mandate was never lent in the first place, which means administrative power subsists entirely on compliance. It is illusory, and always was.

All in all, our Golden Age dream is looking like [their] worst nightmare, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. – Burning Bright

Will Trump’s Immigration Crackdown Come for the Census?

Donald Trump is quietly reigniting a fight over the Census that could have major implications for power and policy — including the reapportionment of House seats and billions in federal funding.

Trump pushed hard to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census — which critics argued would discourage people from participating, even if they are in the country legally — with the ultimate goal of excluding immigrants in the country illegally from the count for apportionment. Historically, that’s not how it’s been done; the 14th Amendment requires House seats be apportioned by “counting the whole number of persons in each State,” and non-citizens have never been excluded from apportionment totals.

Adding the question was litigated heavily, with the Supreme Court ultimately ruling that the Trump administration could not do so, largely on procedural grounds.

Had Trump won this fight it would have been hugely consequential. The census is a massive, constitutionally-mandated undertaking that has a dramatic effect on American politics — resetting the number of House seats (and therefore the number of Electoral College votes) each state gets and directing billions of federal dollars. – Politico

Our Take: Many of you have heard me discussing this for years. There is no way there are anywhere close to 340 million Americans. The Census measures total people in the country, Americans or not. Then, of course, data is hard to obtain, inaccurate, and can be manipulated.

What will it mean if we find out we’ve been footing the bill for many millions more than we were told? What will it mean about our elections? – Chris Paul

  17. Congressman Introduces Bill to Exclude Illegal Immigrants From Medicaid

Congressman Kevin Kiley, R-Calif., has introduced a bill that would prevent states such as California from allowing illegal immigrants to enroll in Medicaid. Kiley estimates this would save California $6.5 billion per year; in January 2024, the state expanded Medicaid enrollment to include all illegal immigrants.

“This common sense legislation ensures that taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits are preserved for those who lawfully qualify, prioritizing the needs of American citizens and legal residents while promoting fairness and fiscal responsibility,” Kiley said in a statement on the bill.

Kiley also noted that many Americans enrolled in Medicaid, a taxpayer-funded public healthcare system for low-income individuals, are already struggling to find doctors. – Just the News

Our Take: Since entitlements are bankrupt, this legislation is common sense; but it’s shameful and a stain on America that this policy objective needs to be accomplished through legislation.

It was criminal for our handlers to shackle Americans with the bill for all the world’s healthcare. Lawmakers did this eagerly and without reservation, accelerating the decline of American systems and money and way of life.

There cannot only be a change of process or law. There also must be accountability for those who intentionally crippled us while we paid their salaries. MAGA. – Ashe in America

  20. EXCERPT: “President Donald Trump’s pick to run the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will be grilled in public hearings held by lawmakers who’ve pocketed more than $10 million from the pharmaceutical industry.

In a make-or-break moment for the movement to “make America healthy again,” Trump’s nominee to lead the crusade at HHS, environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., is scheduled to testify on Capitol Hill Wednesday and Thursday. Kennedy will appear before the Senate Finance Committee first, and the Health, Education Labor & Pensions Committee second.

“There are a series of industries that actually make money from keeping us sick,” Kennedy said in an interview with Dr. Phil last year, which the host re-shared this week. “You would think they want us healthy but they actually make more money if we get sicker. And of course, with the pharmaceutical companies, if you have a chronic illness then you’re a lifetime patient.”

Kennedy said the diabetes drug Ozempic in particular is being relied on to induce weight loss for a nation where more than two-thirds are overweight and 40 percent are obese. In November, the Biden administration proposed an 11th-hour rule to cover the medication under federal insurance programs. If confirmed as HHS secretary, Kennedy would decide whether to approve the $35 billion handout for drug manufacturers or terminate the proposal. Kennedy, however, has been a consistent critic of the medications now recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for obese children as young as 12.

“A sick child,” Kennedy said in his August endorsement speech of Trump, “is the best thing for the pharmaceutical industry. When American children or adults are sick with a chronic condition, they’re put on medication for their entire life.”

Kennedy’s persistent antagonism of the pharmaceutical giants led to a shock in their stocks upon his nomination to lead the nearly $2 trillion agency in charge of regulating the drug industry. HHS holds jurisdiction over the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), making HHS a primary recruitment ground for the industry’s revolving door of influence, which Kennedy has pledged to eliminate…..”

  21. EXCERPT: “…..WHERE ARE THE BOOKKEEPERS?

A total of seventy-five agencies listed in the Federal Register are defunct, many for decades! Thirty-nine of those agencies were temporary commissions, created to study a single issue and produce a report, usually after the end of a year. The Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry and Twenty-First Century Workforce Commission are two such examples.

Twelve agencies have closed but have had their duties merged with another agency, for example, the Valles Caldera Trust and the Oklahoma City National Memorial Trust, once separate entities, are now integrated into the National Park Service.

More rarely, agencies were terminated by an act of Congress or administrative reshuffling. So went the National Institute for Literacy and the Resolution Trust Corporation.

Record keeping within the Federal Register, which is supposed to be the definitive guide to government policy, is shockingly bad. Not only are agencies listed that are long-defunct, but records of those agencies are often not updated, so members of the public must conduct deep research to ascertain the composition of their own government.

Just as different parts of government will report different total personnel counts or payroll figures, different parts of the federal government don’t have a shared understanding of how many agencies are active, what they’re currently named, and what they’re doing, if anything. If the federal government were a book, there’s no usable table of contents for the average American to find what they’re seeking.

As Open the Books researchers dutifully sort through the records to determine which agencies still exist and how much those that do are costing the American taxpayers, it’s become clear there’s an opportunity to untangle this web in a public database.

By cataloguing every federal agency, it will create a clearer picture of the government as it stands. Where are the ghost agencies that can be deleted? Where is there duplication? Bloat? For DOGE to be as effective as possible, it’s necessary to have the best possible understanding of the status quo as of 2024.

Open the Books will periodically release a list of agencies our auditors have studied, charting their growth, expense and activity over time. Are taxpayers getting their money’s worth? Are they getting anything at all? Regardless of your affiliation, it’s in everyone’s interest to open the books together and find out…..”

Senator Cruz says China is controlling the Panama Canal violating their treaty with the United States. We will take it back.

“China’s influence on Panama Canal poses ‘acute risks to US national security,’ Sen. Cruz warns”

President Donald Trump has said ‘China is operating the Panama Canal’ and ‘we’re taking it back’

    Excerpts:

“Chinese companies are right now building a bridge across the canal at a slow pace so as to take nearly a decade. And Chinese companies control container ports at either end. The partially-completed bridge gives China the ability to block the canal without warning and the ports give China ready observation posts to time that action,” said Cruz, who is the chairman of the committee.

We cannot turn a blind eye if Panama exploits an asset of vital commercial and military importance, and we cannot stay idle while China is on the march in our hemisphere,” he concluded.

  25. Practical Solutions: US Engineers turn Salty Seawater into Drinking Water with New Cheap Method

Posted on  by The Tactical Hermit

The diagram illustrates how the researchers’ electrodes remove boron. Initially, most salt ions are removed through reverse osmosis.

US engineers turn salty seawater into drinking water with new cheap method

Researchers have developed carbon cloth electrodes that efficiently remove boron from seawater, potentially replacing costly chemicals in desalination.

The electrodes remove boron from desalinated water by splitting molecules into ions. Hydroxide ions bind to boron, which adheres to positive electrodes, ensuring safer drinking water production.

The breakthrough, developed by a team of engineers at the University of Michigan (UM) and Rice University, marks a crucial advancement in making seawater safe for drinking.

“Our device reduces the chemical and energy demands of seawater desalination, significantly enhancing environmental sustainability and cutting costs by up to 15 percent, or around 20 cents per cubic meter of treated water,” said Weiyi Pan, a postdoctoral researcher at Rice University and a study co-first author, in a statement.”
