The word comes from the resemblance of the drink to the clothing of the Capuchin monks.

In Italian, the word espresso literally means “when something is forced out.”

Coffee was the first food to be freeze-dried.

Brazil!

Made from coffee beans eaten and then excreted by a Sumatran wild cat.

Coffee beans grow on a bush.

Arabica and robusta beans are the most common.

This Turkish pot makes quite the cup of joe.

These beans are named after their ports of origin.

Coffee was banned for its unusual stimulating effects.

Instant coffee is almost 250 years old!

The people of Finland consume the most coffee at 12.5 kilograms per person.

Before coffee became readily available, beer was the drink of choice at breakfast.

Luckily, studies show that coffee has corresponded with lower risks of diseases like heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s, but unfortunately, caffeine may increase the possibility of anxiety.

Hawaii and California are the only two states that produce coffee.

Till next month…stay sharp!

    1. Morning, Pat! Beat ya! Temp was at 1 when I got up, now at 0. Supposed to get a light dusting of snow today but it’s also supposed to be up to 40 by Thursday! LOL – the NE seesaw!!!

I’d be happy for a little seesaw–cloudy, cold and gloomy here much too often lately!
Do you ever get bluejays at any of your feeders?
we had the one–he came to check out what all the other birds were eating. But he (they) mostly stays at the corn block. This morning, one has been sitting on the deck railing calling out like “where’s MINE?”
the deer and the bluejays finished that block in under 2 days, so we’re waiting to put out more.
but his size is keeping the smaller birds away for now.

        1. Yep – all the time. They no longer try the caged feeder hanging under the eaves. They try on the WP blocks but they don’t keep at it for long. They prefer eating seeds from the ground, hence the attraction to the corn blocks. Don’t worry – the smaller birds will return – they always do, no matter how long you go w/o putting out seed for them.

Petition Demanding ‘Immediate’ Resignation of LA Mayor Karen Passes Surpasses 120k Signatures

A petition requesting the resignation of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass over her response to the deadly wildfires blazing through Los Angeles has already surpassed 100,000 signatures. Concretely, it is at over 120,000, with over 26,000 signing on Monday alone.

The petition was started by user “Frustrated Californian” and “urgently” requests the recall of mayor Bass over her “gross mismanagement and failure to effectively respond to the devastating 2025 fires in and around the city of Los Angeles.”

Bass has been the subject of criticism over the handling of the fires, especially as she was outside the country when they started. Critics were quick to point out that she had promised to not go abroad and focus on the city while campaigning for office but was in Ghana last week.

“Not only would I of course live here, but I also would not travel internationally — the only places I would go would be D.C., Sacramento, San Francisco and New York, in relation to L.A,” she had told The New York Times in 2021

Illegal immigrant with $1M worth of drugs, guns given free housing courtesy of blue state taxpayers: officials

A Massachusetts state senator is calling the state’s emergency housing assistance program into question after an illegal immigrant was allegedly caught with an AR-15 and about $1 million worth of fentanyl in a state-subsidized hotel room.

Leonardo Andujar Sanchez of the Dominican Republic, 28, was arrested by Revere Police on Dec. 27 and charged with 11 criminal counts in Chelsea District Court. Ten were related to firearms possession – including one for being an “alien” in possession of a firearm – and one for possession of approximately 10 pounds of the synthetic opiate.

Sanchez was also charged in Massachusetts federal court on Wednesday with possession with intent to distribute more than 400 grams of fentanyl and unlawful possession of a firearm. He had been living at the Quality Inn in Revere, where authorities found five kilograms of suspected fentanyl, an AR-style assault rifle, ammunition, two rifle magazines, digital scales and latex gloves in his room, federal prosecutors said.

The Executive Office of Housing & Livable Communities told the Boston Herald that Sanchez and his family had been living at the Revere Quality Inn since Oct. 15.

The shelter is just a short drive from Downtown Boston, where Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu has said that the city’s sanctuary policies “make everyone safer.”

‘Meritless’: In Its Dying Days, Biden DOJ Sues GOP-Led City Council For Not Being … Hispanic Enough | The Daily Caller

A Department of Justice (DOJ) lawsuit alleges that Hazleton, Pennsylvania’s city council elections violate federal law because not enough “Hispanic-preferred candidates” are winning  without defining what a Hispanic-preferred candidate is.

The DOJ sued the majority-Hispanic town Tuesday over its at-large election system in which voters across Hazelton vote to elect each district’s city council member, alleging it does not give Hispanics a fair chance at participation and violates a section of the Voting Rights Act that bans restricting voters based on race. The complaint fails to prove illegal discrimination and appears “meritless” on its face, legal experts told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“What the complaint fails entirely to address is that Hispanic candidates are losing races not because of their race, but due to politics — if they run as Democrats, they are going to lose,” Hans von Spakovsky, a senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation and former counsel for the DOJ, told the DCNF.

He helped the agency enforce the Voting Rights Act under the Bush administration.

“In the 2023 election for the city’s mayor, the incumbent Republican, Jeff Cusat, won in a landslide with 61% of the vote,” von Spakovsky said. “The Democratic Hispanic who ran against him, Vianney Castro, received only 28% of the vote.”

  4. Just The News: “Attorney General Merrick Garland submitted to Congress early Tuesday a portion of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s final report in which the prosecutor boasted he would’ve secured Donald Trump’s conviction if the President-elect had not won the election.

”Indeed, but for Mr. Trump’s election and imminent return to the Presidency, the Office assessed that the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial,” the 170-page report stated.

The release of the report came days after Trump failed to persuade multiple courts to block its release and just hours after a separate special counsel, David Weiss, released his report accusing President Joe Biden of misleading the American people about the reasons his son Hunter Biden was prosecuted for gun and tax crimes.

Smith alleged in the report that Trump “inspired his supporters to commit acts of physical violence” on Jan. 6 even though Trump gave a speech that day explicitly urging his followers to protest peacefully.

The prosecutor also claimed Trump exhorted his followers to contest the 2020 election by knowingly and falsely claiming there was voter fraud.

“Trump knew that there was no outcome-determinative fraud in the 2020 election, that many of the specific claims that he made were untrue, and that he had lost the election,” Smith alleged.

You can read the full report here.

    Report-of-Special-Counsel-Smith-Volume-1-January-2025.pdf

Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to immediately contest the report. “To show you how desperate Deranged Jack Smith is, he released his Fake findings at 1:00 A.M. in the morning,” Trump wrote.”

    Clandestine, Jan 13, 2025

“Bloomberg reports Chinese officials are in preliminary talks about selling Tik Tok to Elon Musk.

This would be a game-changer in the mass awakening, particularly amongst the younger generations.

If Elon is able to change Tik Tok the way he changed Twitter, truth will get more exposure, and public perception will continue to shift away from the false reality the Deep State have created via the MSM. Future generations will begin moving away from the woke programming, and return to normalcy.

Obviously we will have to wait and see if this comes to fruition, but it is an intriguing possibility.”

  6. “‘Pete’s A Patriot’: More Than 100 Veterans And Supporters Rally For Hegseth’s Pentagon Nomination”

The Federalist, By: Shawn Fleetwood, January 13, 2025

Navy SEAL Rob Sweetman speaking at a presser.

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “‘These are warfighters. That’s who support[s] Pete,’ said Navy SEAL veteran Bill Brown. More than 100 former Navy SEALs, military veterans, and other supporters gathered in Washington, D.C. on Monday to back Pete Hegseth’s nomination as the next secretary of defense. The rally comes ahead of Hegseth’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday.

“These are warfighters. That’s who support[s] Pete. That’s who’s on this podium. These are men and women who put it on the line for our country. And they’re telling you the way it is,” former Navy SEAL Bill Brown said.

Monday’s presser comes amid a series of unsubstantiated allegations of wrongdoing in the workplace leveled against Hegseth by alleged anonymous sources leading up to Tuesday’s confirmation hearing. Laundered by America’s corrupt corporate media, some of these claims appear to stem from a former disgruntled employee. They have also been heavily disputed by Hegseth’s former colleagues and associates.

A woman also previously accused Hegseth of sexual assault following a purported 2017 sexual encounter between the two. Prosecutors declined to press charges due to a lack of “proof beyond a reasonable doubt,” according to reports.

Several veterans in Monday’s gathering are former Navy SEALs who participated in the GI Go Fund’s Navy SEAL Hudson River Swims, a charity event involving former SEALs, “fellow veterans and military supporters in a swim across the Hudson River to honor our military veterans, their families, and all of those who died during 9/11 and the wars that followed that fateful day.” Hegseth previously partook in the swim during his time as a Fox News host.

Rob Sweetman, a Navy SEAL veteran, told event attendees that the country and its military service members “need Pete Hegseth” as defense secretary, and lambasted the “smear campaign” designed to tank his confirmation. “Pete’s a good dude, we know him personally,” Sweetman said. “He’s a patriot, he’s went down range, he’s done the right things, and he’s got my vote.”

Kenny Bigbee Jr., a Navy SEAL veteran and fellow participant in the Hudson River Swims, said “the only way to transcend politics is [through] service and sacrifice with your life for our inalienable rights,” and noted that Hegseth has fulfilled that obligation throughout his career. “Pete Hegseth showed up and showed out to show his patriotism, domestically, to represent our people and to give our best to our vets,” Bigbee said, referring to Hegseth’s participation in the Hudson River Swim. “Pete Hegseth has served and proven to serve and sacrifice with his life for our inalienable rights.”

Marine Corps veteran Jessica Quezada blasted the media’s smear campaign against Hegseth and said, “If you want to see a representation of who he is … look at the caliber of individuals standing behind a man [they] know … is gonna do good” in his role as defense secretary. “We are so frustrated and angry by what has come undone by the current administration,” Quezada said. “I am a woman [and] a Marine Corps veteran who is in support of a man that is gonna represent every single person in the uniform, regardless of their gender, regardless of their color … .”

Monday’s presser also featured comments from Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. During his remarks, the Cotton State’s senior senator reaffirmed he is “110 percent” behind Hegseth’s nomination and pledged to help “get him across the finish line.”

“We need to straighten our military academies out. We need to get back to everyday respect and loyalty and belief in this country with our military, and it all starts with Pete Hegseth,” Tuberville said.

Hegseth is expected to face hostile questioning from the Senate Armed Service Committee’s Democrat members during Tuesday’s hearing. Last week, for example, committee member and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., issued a 33-page letter containing dishonestly framed and accusatory statements and questions about Hegseth’s beliefs and history. This included an apparent smear of Hegseth’s Christian faith.

The Massachusetts Democrat noted how during his time in the Army National Guard, Hegseth was “removed from President Biden’s inauguration” after a fellow D.C. Guard member flagged him as a potential “insider threat.” The Guard member pegged his alleged concerns on Hegseth’s “Deus Vult” tattoo — which is Latin for “God wills it.”

Quoting a Reuters article in her letter, Warren claimed the tattoo “was a Christian expression associated with right-wing extremism.” “We cannot have a Defense Secretary whose fellow servicemembers feel concerned enough about to report as a potential insider threat,” Warren wrote.

It’s not just Senate Democrats who could potentially stall Hegseth’s confirmation, however. Last month, multiple Trump world sources told The Federalist that Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, was waging an “aggressive” personal jihad to derail Hegseth’s nomination. This included reports that Ernst — a member of the Armed Services Committee — made several phone calls to Trump to urge him to dump Hegseth as defense secretary and enlisted Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to lobby the incoming president to replace Hegseth with Ernst.

Both Republicans seemingly changed their tunes on Hegseth’s nomination following The Federalist’s reporting on their behind-the-scenes antics.

Meanwhile, Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind., refused to commit to supporting Hegseth’s confirmation when pressed by The Federalist on his position last month, while Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C. — who has pledged to back Hegseth and other Trump nominees — issued a veiled threat to conservative voters that continued pressure to confirm Trump’s picks could prompt Republicans to side with Democrats in tanking their nominations.”

  7. Just The News: “The Village People band on Monday announced that it has accepted an invitation from President-elect Donald Trump to perform at multiple of his inaugural events this coming weekend.

The group has seen a resurgence in the popularity of their hit song “Y.M.C.A.” recently, after Trump used the music to dance to at his campaign rallies last year. Trump has been playing the song since 2020.

Victor Willis, the band’s frontman and lead singer, admitted that the decision to attend the events will be controversial, but said he hopes the band’s music will unite the country.

“We know this wont [sic] make some of you happy to hear, however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics,” Willis said in a post on Facebook. “Our song Y.M.C.A. is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost.

“Therefore, we believe it’s now time to bring the country together with music which is why VILLAGE PEOPLE will be performing at various events as part of the 2025 Inauguration of Donald J. Trump.”

Willis did not specify what events the group will perform at, but one such event will reportedly be the Inaugural-Eve Ball hosted by Turning Point USA, according to NBC News. The event will include guests such as Vice President-elect JD Vance, Donald Trump Jr., and multiple Cabinet nominees.

Country music star Carrie Underwood will also attend at least one event, the official Inauguration, where she is expected to perform “America the Beautiful.”

  8. “DoD Had Its Most Spendy Month Since the Bush Era: Sec. Austin’s DoD spent more in September 2024 than any month since 2008, when Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts raged.”

    OpenTheBooks, Jan 14, 2025

EXCERPT: “The Department of Defense spent $79.1 billion on contracts and grants in September 2024, making it the military’s most expensive month for such purchases since 2008. Not since George W. Bush was president has the military funneled so much cash out the door so quickly.

The dollar total includes $33.1 billion spent in the last five working days of September, which was 7% of the Pentagon’s contract and grant spending for all of fiscal year 2024. Only 11 other countries typically spend that much on their entire military in a full year.

On Friday, Sept. 27 alone, the DoD spent $11.7 billion on contracts and grants.

Federal agencies typically go on spending sprees at the end of the fiscal year, likely due to “use-it-or-lose-it” funding rules. They’re worried that spending less than their budget allows will cause Congress to give them less money the following year.

The largest expenses were in line with expectations, including $3 billion spent on ammunition and $7.9 billion spent on aircraft.

Others were a bit more surprising. The military spent $103.7 million on meat, fish and poultry in September, partially because they ordered raw lobster tail 147 times for $6.1 million. They also dropped $16.6 million on ribeye steak, $6.4 million on salmon and $407,000 on Alaskan king crab.

Another $81.1 million went towards fruits and veggies. Blueberries were the most popular, with three orders each exceeding $100,000. There was no grape juice; maybe there’s still some left from the DoD’s $586,000 purchase in September 2023.

Not all the groceries were as healthy. The DoD ordered ice cream 79 times for $113,230 and spent $117,787 on fresh doughnuts…..”

  10. “Jill Biden Prepares For Final Week As President”

    Politics · Jan 13, 2025 · BabylonBee.com

    Article Image

WASHINGTON, D.C. — With the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump set to take place next Monday, White House insiders revealed that the mood was somber as Jill Biden prepared for her final week as president.

After spending four years as the chief executive of the United States, Jill was reportedly winding down her daily itinerary and taking what sources described as a “bittersweet” inventory as she got ready to no longer be the person running the country.

“Not being President is going to be a big change for her,” said one insider. “It’s just what she’s been used to for so long. She’s been carrying the mantle of responsibility this whole time, and it’s going to be difficult for her next week to just hand over the reins to someone else.”

One highly placed source within the Biden administration said Jill would do her best to tie up any loose ends before leaving office on January 20th. “She’s still got a few important meetings left,” the insider said. “She’ll be issuing some pardons to some of the most evil people in human history, sending another $50 billion or so to Ukraine, and if she can get around to it by the weekend, she’d really like to finally get World War III kicked off. It’ll be a busy week, but these last few attempts to bankrupt and destroy America won’t just get done by themselves.”

At publishing time, White House staff also revealed that the last week of Jill’s presidency would also include a significant amount of time spent packing up Joe’s toys and clearing out the playroom.

  11. “California Police Arrest Arsonist For Using Gas Blowtorch Instead Of Electric Blowtorch”

    U.S. · Jan 13, 2025 · BabylonBee.com

    Article Image

LOS ANGELES, CA — As the devastation spread and the death toll continued to rise with firefighters working tirelessly to contain the blazes, a suspected arsonist was arrested for allegedly attempting to use a gas blowtorch instead of an electric blowtorch to start another California wildfire.

Authorities said Juan Manuel Sierra-Leyva was apprehended trying to start a wildfire while in possession of a gas-powered blowtorch in a clear violation of California law, which stipulates that all catastrophic wildfires be started with only energy-efficient electric blowtorches.

“We only allow environmentally friendly arson in this state,” said Sgt. Pete Rodriguez of the Los Angeles Police Department. “We received reports that this suspect was out here setting fires with a gas blowtorch, which is a blatant disregard for the laws and regulations of California. We apprehended the suspect and got him off the street, which will make room for more environmentally conscious arsons using the proper tools.”

Governor Gavin Newsom applauded law enforcement’s commitment to focusing on the state’s priorities amid the ongoing wildfire crisis. “We know what’s truly important here in California,” Newsom told reporters. “There is a right way to ignite devastating wildfires, and using a gas-powered blowtorch is not it.”

The governor’s office said that the gas blowtorch had been confiscated as part of a statewide plan to provide arsonists with electric blowtorches.

At publishing time, Newsom announced that he would be signing an executive order that would require all wildfires in California to ravage the state more efficiently by 2035.

No idea whether an autopsy has been performed but the baby’s organs were donated so I’m not sure how that will affect things. They do have an attorney lined up who is “advising” them but he won’t do much else until he gets paid. It’s not a big enough case for a pro bono law firm to concern itself.

I’m betting that donation decision was made specifically because of that. These people in KS are just pure evil! She has now also filed for divorce so nothing can happen until that is over – by design, no doubt!!! Man, it’s times like this that I REALLY wish I was rich!!! I’d give them the $100K! I am sending them $100 to use as they see fit – the gas back & forth alone to KS all the time is expensive!

It looks more and more like SIDs – they were both home with her that day and put her to bed as usual before they went to bed. When William checked on her the next morning, she wasn’t breathing. I sent Sis links to several fund-raising sites so they can get that set up. Sis babysat for him from the time he was 3.5 months old until he was 11. I lived with her during that last year and distinctly remember William because he was such a sweet kid and was the only towhead with white/blond hair.

In September 2024, Newsom signed a bill into law that would allow them to subdivide a lot zoned for “single family” use to be REDEVELOPED as a multi-family building if it is vacant, abandoned and uninhabitable.

So, every structure that burned down can be REDEVELOPED into multi-family or low-income housing. This goes into effect July 2025. Convenient timing, huh?

Look at the map from NASA – thanks to @I_Am_JohnCullen. All the red dots are homes that are 100% destroyed and gone. All the black dots are homes that are damaged.

Now – connect those dots with the fact that this area is needed for development to support California’s goal to host the 2028 Olympics & convert Los Angeles into a Smart City.

  17. Just The News: “President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday announced the formation of a counterpart organization to the IRS that would focus on taxing foreign entities making money of the United States.

Trump defied Republican free trade orthodoxy during his first term by espousing support for tariffs on countries he accused of maintaining predatory trade practices. He reiterated that policy while on campaign and even floating replacing the income tax entirely with duties on foreign goods.

“For far too long, we have relied on taxing our Great People using the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Through soft and pathetically weak Trade agreements, the American Economy has delivered growth and prosperity to the World, while taxing ourselves,” he said. “It is time for that to change. I am today announcing that I will create the EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE to collect our Tariffs, Duties, and all Revenue that come from Foreign sources.”

“We will begin charging those that make money off of us with Trade, and they will start paying, FINALLY, their fair share. January 20, 2025, will be the birth date of the External Revenue Service. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he vowed.”

  18. Good mornin’ Pat and Filly!

    Here’s a SALLY 🌹Q UPDATE!

I’m home for 1-2 nights – depending on how things go with Sally Q.  I filled up my car on the way into town just in case.

Needed to pick up the mail and see if the pipes had survived the cold spells.   All is well with the pipes so far this winter.   I had them wrap all the pipes in walls and under the slab when they built this house.  I put styrofoam covers on the outside faucets every winter too.  So far, no problem.

Sally is holding strong, still taking just one or two hydrocodone + tylenol per day, though she’s having a little bleeding that shows an invasion of tumor into tissue wall.   I was disappointed that she didn’t want to try the alternative cancer treatments – Ivermectin and Fenbendazole, etc.

Slept in my own bed for the first time since December 1.   Have started doing laundry, unloading car.  Did toenails which were in dire need.   Need to unpack and repack bags.   Hope to do a little yard work, just to make the place look nice and lived in.  That’s all good therapy.

    Listening out for phone…

Thanks so much for being a wise counsel, encouragement and support as we walk through all this.

    Much ♥️ Love to all!

  19. Just The News: “The GOP-led House on Tuesday passed a measure with bipartisan support to ban transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. The bill, presented by Florida GOP Rep. Greg Steube, got 218 votes from Republicans and two votes from Democrats.

The legislation, Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025 is expected to pass despite over 400 LGBTQ and civil rights groups calling on lawmakers to reject it, according to The Hill. However, activists have argued that the legislation would undermine civil rights of transgender students.

Republicans during a Tuesday press conference slammed Senate Democrats for not supporting the legislation when it was introduced in the past. “We’re going to stand up for what is right, whether the Senate will do the right thing or not,” said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said that sometime this week the House would also vote on Rep. Nancy Mace’s, R-S.C., bill that calls to deport illegal migrants who sexually abuse women.

“In the last Congress it was noted that 203 Democrats voted to let biological males play in female-only sports,” Johnson said. “We will remedy both of these problems.”

Los Angeles Fire Department chief Kristin Crowley lists amount of out of service LA Fire Department equipment:

    – 40 fire engines
    – 36 rescue ambulances
    – 10 of our trucks also out of service
    – Close to 15%-20% of our fleet

How could Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass let this happen? pic.twitter.com/fm4bTgMTjz

  21. “Sorry, the picture barely survived the fires…

But it all makes sense now… Right? Makes me wonder what high priced block of real estate is next. I’m guessing the SF Bay area is due for another mysterious conflagration. Clear off all the expensive real estate and get rid of the homeless all in one fell swoop.

By the way, in 1970, the US Military drew up plans to burn Los Angeles and Mt. Shasta where recent fires occurred…”
