Montana State Flower: Bitterroot

Official State Flower of Montana

Montana designated bitterroot (Lewisia rediviva) as the official state flower in 1895.

Bitterroot can be found during spring and summer, growing in the sagebrush plains and the foothills of the mountains in western and south central Montana.

Native Americans such as the Shoshone and Flathead Indians used the roots for food and trade. The bitter root of the low-growing perennial plant was cooked and usually mixed with berries or meat. The Lemhi Shoshone believed the small red core found in the upper taproot had special powers (notably being able to stop a bear attack).

Explorers Lewis and Clark wrote about the beautiful purplish-pink flower of the bitterroot. The Bitterroot Mountains (which form the divide between Idaho and Montana), the Bitterroot Valley, and the Bitterroot River all owe the origins of their names to this flower.

  1. Good morning! Still no sign of Wheezer; we got a little more snow overnight – there is a thin layer on my front porch this morning, temp @ 20 and windy.

EXCERPT: “A former Concerned Veterans for America (CVA) employee is privately helping Senate Democrats solicit hostile testimony about her former boss, Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be the country’s next defense secretary.

The former employee, Kat Dugan, worked at CVA for eight months while Hegseth served as CEO of the organization, and has sent messages to former CVA colleagues urging them to contact the Senate Armed Services Committee and assuring them they can do so anonymously. She has also provided closed-door testimony to the committee, according to correspondence obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Dugan, formerly Kathleen Volandt, received a poor performance review in 2014 when she was serving as CVA’s North Carolina state director. Shortly thereafter, she filed for short-term disability, then long-term disability, and ultimately tendered her resignation in December 2014. Shawn Pattison, who served as CVA’s national field director at the time, told the Free Beacon that Dugan “consistently fell short of performance expectations.” A copy of her performance review reviewed by the Free Beacon substantiates that assessment.

Pattison offered praise for Hegseth’s leadership abilities, noting that he “transformed CVA from a pilot project into the organization that delivered on [Veterans Affairs] reforms.” He added: “His leadership was what pushed us” and made the job “one of the most fulfilling professional experiences I’ve had so far.”

The text messages and documents shed new light on the high-profile opposition campaign against Hegseth, which has played out in the press and comes largely from anonymous sources. The news could also bolster claims from Hegseth and his allies, who have blamed the negative publicity on “disgruntled employees” waging a “manufactured media takedown.”…..

          1. 500 Rummy. Her favorite aunt used to come to her house once a month and stay for the whole day. And they played Rummy…lol.
she’s been saying she wanted to play that again but last time we were there, she couldn’t remember where she packed away those cards.
So this time i surprised her and brought a deck with me. It was a great time (except for all the sitting…lol)

              1. LOL…she must have 20 decks of cards! they brought them back from Vegas when they went, and from the local casinos. But she went thru a stage where she was removing the clutter from her drawers and packed them all away somewhere since it’s just her there. i believe they’re all in a box in the spare room somewhere, but i wanted to make sure we could play this time.

    Good grief. It figures.

This is billionaire Lynda Resnick, her family owns 60-75% of the water in California

    – Her family donates HUGE amounts of money to Democrats
    – She donated to stop Gavin Newsom’s recall
    – They use over 150 billion gallons of water every year
    – Her family was in the 1994 secret meeting that officially ended water being a public right in California
    – They’re the largest agricultural owners in California, and their farms use more water than all homes in Los Angeles combined
    – Lynda and Stewart Resnick own Fiji Water, POM Pomegranate Juice, Wonderful Pistachios, and many other food companies
    – They’ve faced lawsuits related to their water management practices, with allegations of profiting from selling water stored in the Kern Water Bank to non-members at a profit, violating public utility laws
    – The Resnicks have been accused of using their wealth to influence water policy and politics
