As the clock struck 8 p.m. in New York City on the night of October 30, 1938, Orson Welles stood on a podium inside a Madison Avenue radio studio. The baby-faced, 23-year-old theatrical star, who had graced the cover of Time magazine months earlier, prepared to direct 10 actors and a 27-piece orchestra for the Columbia Broadcasting System’s weekly “Mercury Theatre on the Air” program.

Millions of Americans, as they were every night, huddled around their radios, but relatively few of them were listening to CBS when it was announced that Welles and his fellow cast members were presenting an original dramatization of the 1898 H.G. Wells science-fiction novel “The War of the Worlds.” Instead, most of the country was tuned in to NBC’s popular “Chase and Sanborn Hour,” which featured ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his dummy, Charlie McCarthy. 

Channel surfing, however, was not a modern-day invention, and disoriented listeners who stumbled onto the “Mercury Theatre on the Air” without having heard the disclaimer at the top of the radio play were thrust into the middle of an hour-long drama that left some believing that the country was under attack.

The CBS program, penned by “Casablanca” screenwriter Howard Koch, opened serenely with the dulcet dance music of “Ramon Raquello and his orchestra.” Then, an actor portraying an announcer broke in with a fake news report that several explosions of incandescent gas had occurred on Mars. In quick succession came a series of increasingly alarming, suspense-building newsflashes that culminated with Martian spacecrafts crashing into a farm in Grovers Mill, New Jersey. 

For the rest of the hour, terror crackled over the airwaves. Breathless reporters detailed an extraterrestrial army of squid-like figures that killed thousands of earthlings with heat rays and black clouds of poison gas as they steamrolled into New York City. Welles and the rest of the cast impersonated astronomers, state militia officials and even the Secretary of the Interior, who cannily sounded like President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Human germs, rather than human armies, ultimately did in the mythical Martian invaders, and at the end of the hour the director wrapped up the radio drama by telling his audience, “This is Orson Welles, ladies and gentlemen, out of character to assure you that ‘The War of the Worlds’ has no further significance than as the holiday offering it was intended to be. The Mercury Theatre’s own radio version of dressing up in a sheet and jumping out of a bush and saying ‘boo!’”

The National Panic That Followed The War of the Worlds 

The fright that Welles put into America, however, was much greater than he thought. Although the program included a reminder at intermission that it was a dramatization, thousands of anxious and confused listeners believed it to be real. They besieged police departments, newspapers and CBS with phone calls. In New Jersey, ground zero for the fictitious invasion, national guardsmen wanted to know where they should report for duty, and the Trenton police department fielded 2,000 calls in under two hours. In Providence, Rhode Island, hysterical callers begged the electric company to cut power to the city to keep it safe from the extraterrestrial invaders.

Fear and anxiety had become a way of life in the 1930s, and it took little to rattle jittery Americans. The Depression had emptied their wallets, the gathering crisis in Europe threatened to ignite into war and just weeks earlier the Hurricane of 1938 had roared ashore. Plus, the Hindenburg disaster, which had been broadcast over the airwaves just the year before, was still fresh in the country’s collective psyche.

The newspaper industry also felt unease from the increasing popularity of radio as an informational and advertising medium, and seeing a chance to strike back at its growing rival, it gleefully collected the sporadic reports of individual confusion generated by “The War of the Worlds” and weaved them into a narrative of “mass hysteria.” Newspapers reported suicide attempts, heart attacks and exoduses from major metropolitan areas. 

The New York Daily News printed the feverish headline “Fake Radio ‘War’ Stirs Terror Through U.S.” along with the photograph of a “war victim,” a woman in a sling who had heard the reports of black gas clouds in Times Square and ran out from her midtown apartment into the street where she fell and broke her arm. Similar stories of woe were printed from coast to coast and unleashed a media frenzy.

Orson Welles’ Response

With threats of lawsuits swirling in the press, CBS went into damage control. At a hastily called press conference, a doe-eyed Welles displayed his theatrical acumen and expressed his remorse and shock at the public reaction. “I can’t imagine an invasion from Mars would find ready acceptance,” he said when asked if he pranked the country. Decades later, however, Welles admitted, “The kind of response was merrily anticipated by us all. The size of it, of course, was flabbergasting.”

The Federal Communications Commission did not sanction CBS or Welles, and the radio dramatist quickly spun his Halloween trick into a treat. Thanks to what became known as the “panic broadcast,” the radio program signed Campbell’s Soup as a sponsor, and soon after, Welles inked a deal to direct “Citizen Kane,” named by the American Film Institute as the greatest movie of all time.

          when I bought my jeep–when we were moving here and the duster was no longer a viable car for this area, I put my duster out on the front lawn and sold it in a day.

            1. my jeep is old school–18 yrs old. no power anything–only things i wanted air and automatic transmission. no gps crap…
              people approach me in parking lots asking to buy it. I have names and phone numbers in case i wanna sell it…LOL
              it’s got 70,000 miles and the interior is pristine.

                now if i could learn how to harness the deer like Santa did, it’d be way less!

    supposed to be a little warmer today. we never made it much over 50* yesterday and we got the briefest–and i do mean briefest of spritzes yesterday. didn’t even wet the entire deck.

        i too have been enjoying a few lazy days since coming back from Mom’s. She wanted to clean out the kitchen drawers this visit. we emptied every drawer and relined them with clean paper and washed everything and pit it back. mostly we talked. she told me about the flatware set–where she got this gadget or that and my goodness how many can openers does one little lady need? LOL
        we’re starting to plan our Christmas get together. we didn’t have one last year because everyone was sick and no one wanted to bring it to her.
        so of course we discussed table cloths…lol. she’s very excited though.

    2. Good morning, Pat! Wheezer was waiting as usual this morning; we got a downpour so loud it woke me up during the night and more rain is predicted for the coming days. By next week, I expect we will have had enough that I could send some your way….maybe….if you’re nice to me!😁😂🤣😉😊

      I turned the thermostat down to 70 and used the electric heaters yesterday, turning them off before I went to sleep. When I got up this morning, temp was still sitting at 70 w/o the furnace – I turned it back up to my usual 74 and it came on normally again. I hope changing the igniter tomorrow fixes this.

        the one good thing about the low water level in the pond, is that maybe this weekend i can attack the cattails growing at the one end of the pond. they are definitely drying out.

      Biden just gift-wrapped the election and laid it at Trump’s feet. Any momentum or optics Kamala was hoping to gain on her big night, was just squandered by Biden calling Trump supporters “garbage.”

      Biden just supplied Trump with unlimited ammunition for the final stretch. Not only did he ruin the Dems’ big narrative shift with Kamala’s speech on the Ellipse, he just gave Trump the rallying cry to solidify his support in the final stages of the election.

      Absolutely catastrophic mistake from Biden, and now the Dems/MSM are already going into damage control and trying to rewrite what Biden said. It won’t work so long as we have X.

      Biden just dealt a crippling blow to the Dems, with minimal time to recover. He is our greatest weapon! 😂

  9. I’m in a ranting mood today…. Marica reminds us it’s only 6 days to the election. Oh I dread it and all the leftist and RINO atrocities that are sure to follow.

    My thoughts are still on what they did in 2020….

    Some call this the ‘election of our lifetime.’ 

    The Election of 2020 was the election of my lifetime – it showed me an election can be brazenly stolen despite massive evidence of a large scale fraud operation. 

    In the election and its aftermath, we saw evil and corruption prevail.
    After the brazen fraud, we endured jackboot censorship. 

    We saw the collusion of the courts as they ignored the fraud. 
    We witnessed the false flag operation of January 6 – perpetrated by trained operatives – escalators, instigators, agitators, actors.

    We watched the treason of Congress – when Pelosi, Pence, McConnell, who were in on the steal, ignoring the fraud and putting on a pretense of righteous indignation, blaming President Trump and his innocent supporters – they helped perpetuate and seal the steal. 

    This collaborative collusion created what was in fact – The Coup of 2020 – a coup against our Constitution, system of laws, government and elections and against the will of legal voters.

    The January 6 prisoners also come to mind today.  

    Will they all be released soon after November 5, because what they saw and know won’t matter any more? 

    Or will they all be Epsteined like the witnesses who saw too much at the Las Vegas massacre and the witness of the Boston Marathon massacre who was killed by the FBI in the dark of the night in Florida?

      we, as a people, have been shown in no uncertain terms what happens when we get complacent, when we don’t think it matters “who’s in the WH”. We’ve been shown how bad it will get. We’re being replaced, invaded, murdered, raped, and are forced to pay for our own destruction. We don’t like it. We see the end game.
      I think we win this time and if we don’t, it just might be 1776 all over again.

    2. IDK, GA – there were many who considered 2016 to be the “election of a lifetime,” including me at the time. First time a “civilian” ran for the “highest office in the land” – someone who didn’t come from the political realm – someone who talked like us, admitted to some of the same failings as many of us and didn’t claim to be perfect, someone who had been down and clawed his way back up, someone who had actual work experience instead of jaw-boning for a living….someone who enjoyed the same jokes we did….we could see ourselves in him.

      I think there have been many “elections of a lifetime” and will probably be many more after we’re all gone – it all depends on each persons’ perspective.

    The steal has begun. Reading multiple accounts of blatant illegal voting, either via ballot harvesting through paid off canvassing or outright use of illegals to vote. I know Alex Jones is “radioactive” but his post on X popped up, with video of illegals BUSSED to a poll in Pennsylvania, and herded up ahead of others in the line to vote. Of course the DOJ and other state organs are pushing to keep from striking these people from being on voter rolls. It is insane, and a threat to President Trump winning.

    Just The News: “Attorneys general from 26 states filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of Virginia removing non-citizens from its voter rolls.

    Kansas led the Republican state coalition in the brief filed on Monday, which includes Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

    The Justice Department sued Virginia earlier this month over removing more than 1,500 non-citizens from its rolls ahead of the Nov. 5 elections. A federal judge in Virginia on Friday ordered the commonwealth to place non-citizens back on its voter rolls. The judge ruled that removing the registered voters from the rolls violated federal law, WRIC reported.

    While Virginia argued that the non-citizens removed from the voter rolls are ineligible to vote, the judge ruled that they were illegally removed too close to the election in violation of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA).

    Virginia appealed the decision to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday. The court ruled against Virginia on Sunday in the commonwealth’s appeal to keep the non-citizens off of its voter rolls. Virginia appealed the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday.

    The 26 state attorneys general argued in their brief that removing non-citizens from voter rolls does not violate the NVRA.

    “Noncitizens are not eligible voters,” the AGs wrote. “They were not eligible voters before Congress passed the NVRA, they were not eligible when Congress passed the NVRA, and they are not eligible voters today. Congress was clearly concerned with State laws that removed previously eligible citizens from the voter rolls. But it was assumed by the NVRA’s supporters that noncitizens would not register in the first place, and at no point did Congress express concern that States would follow their laws and remove self-reported noncitizens who did register from the lists.”

    “It has always been against the law for non-citizens to vote. It is unconscionable that Dems and activist judges are fighting to keep them on the rolls,” Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach posted on X on Tuesday regarding the amicus brief.”

In the battleground states, virtually every poll either reports a tie, or results well within the margin of error. The upshot: Even as Kamala Harris’ national polling lead over Donald Trump has appeared to shrink, her strength may be holding up in the swing states that matter.

    And this suggests the possibility that Election Day may produce a result we have never seen before: a Republican winning the popular vote but losing the Electoral College. That, in turn, just might restore a once-bipartisan consensus — that it is time for the United States to do away with the Electoral College once and for all and let the voters actually decide the presidency.

    Throughout American history, we’ve seen five elections where the popular vote winner lost the White House, with the first three happening in the 19th century. More memorable, particularly for Democrats, are the 2000 and 2016 races, but it’s useful to distinguish between them. Al Gore lost the presidency to George W. Bush while winning the popular vote by just 0.5 percentage points, a virtual tie. Trump, however, took the White House even after coming in a full 2 points and 3 million votes behind Hillary Clinton.

    Four years later, Joe Biden beat Trump by more than 4 points and 7 million votes in the popular vote, but his Electoral College win stood on a slew of narrow victories in key states.

    The 2016 and 2020 campaigns seemed to confirm a broader view of a pro-Republican bias in the Electoral College: With millions of Democratic votes “wasted” in places like California and New York, a Democrat had to win a popular vote plurality north of 3 percent to be elected. — Politico

    1. Just The News: “The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on Wednesday to allow Virginia to remove about 1,600 suspected non-citizens from its voting rolls.

      The ruling lifts an order that had temporarily stopped the program.

      Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Jackson Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented.

      Rich Anderson, chair of the Republican Party of Virginia, reacted to the ruling, stating, “Democrat lawlessness will no longer stand in a nation that is of laws, not of men.”

  27. just got back from my banana run and post office visit.
    I talked with the postmaster about ballots. i asked how can they be received without a postmark? he looked me in the eyes and said–you know why and you know how.
    he said when i get a ballot here, I stamp it with the date stamp and put it in the outgoing mail for sorting.
    i asked about scanning images. he said we don’t do that here—but it SHOULD be done at the sorters. i said they’re not scanning them to avoid FOIA requests. doesn’t surprise me he said.

    Don’t know if anyone else wrote this here or not, but I am going to put it here anyway, since great news cannot be shared enough!

    Minnesota is a red state, but the blues have long known how to cheat. Not only that, but the big blue cities — Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester, Duluth and St. Cloud — have been deciding what kind of dirtballs will run our state for decades.

    Minnesota law says that all absentee and mail-in ballots must be processed by a ballot board comprised of equal parts Republican and Democrat, but Minneapolis — the biggest city — has always used unemployed union workers on their ballot boards; which means Democrats, and 120 Democrats at that.

    Minnesota Voters Alliance took Hennepin County to court on October 16th (yes, only a short while ago!), and yesterday the Minnesota Supreme Court voted unanimously that Hennepin County was breaking the law and they were ordered to fix their ballot board by November 1st — this Friday.

    Yippee!

    What a fabulous thing to learn first thing in the morning!

    Yesterday I wrote that it seemed like the tide was turning red here in Minnesota. Maybe it is, maybe it is not, but one thing I know — this decision by the Minnesota Supreme Court has in some small way at least leveled the playing/cheating court.

    A prominent transgender activist stole nearly $100,000 from a bail fund she operated, using the money to pay for her closet renovations and her Mercedes, prosecutors in Brooklyn allege.

    Dominique Morgan, 43, of Atlanta, was already making $200,000 a year as the executive director of the Brooklyn-based Okra Project when she stole $99,000 during a roughly two-week period in July 2022, prosecutors allege.

    Morgan announced that Okra, which offers mutual aid and other resources to the Black trans community nationwide, would start bailing people out, but didn’t take any steps to create an official initiative, prosecutors charge.

    She transferred the money into her personal account, ostensibly to bail out indigent criminal defendants, but instead spent it on a $19,000 California Closets renovation, car payments for a Mercedes-Benz, purchases at clothing stores, meals and other personal expenses, according to prosecutors.

    When Okra asked her for proof she was using the money for bail, she cooked up bogus receipts for 23 people who were supposedly arrested in Fulton County, Ga., and Douglas County, Neb., prosecutors allege. But an audit showed none of those people had been arrested in either county at the time, prosecutors said.

    She left Okra the next month, announcing on her LinkedIn page, “August 2, 2022 was my final day in my contracted role as the Executive Director of The Okra Project. The decision was amicable.”

    Morgan was indicted Tuesday in Brooklyn Supreme Court on one count of grand larceny and 23 counts of falsifying business records. She pleaded not guilty, and Justice Danny Chun ordered her released without bail.

    She did not respond to questions outside the courtroom, and her lawyer Jonathan Fink declined to comment.

    She could face five to 15 years behind bars if convicted of the top count.

    “The theft of nonprofit funds deprives communities of critical resources, erodes public trust, and cheats donors who give in good faith,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “The defendant in this case allegedly stole bail funds meant to secure pretrial release of indigent defendants, instead using the money for personal benefit.”

    Cloudy here, temp only at 49, but I’m keeping it warm enough with the 2 small heaters set on low so the furnace doesn’t kick on.

  34. Test results for the upcoming November 5 general election mistakenly appeared on WNEP-TV early Sunday evening during a broadcast of the Formula 1 Mexico Grand Prix.

    Those numbers should not have appeared on the screen, and it was an error by WNEP that they did.

    The numbers seen on the screen were randomly generated test results sent out to help news organizations make sure their equipment is working properly in advance of election night.

    The numbers were not reflective of any actual vote count.

    The non-citizen allegedly registered to vote and cast a ballot at an Ann Arbor early voting site on Sunday, per a joint statement from the Washtenaw County prosecutor’s office and the Michigan secretary of state’s office. The alleged non-citizen voter faces charges of Unauthorized Elector Attempting To Vote and Perjury – Making a False Affidavit for Purpose of Securing Voter Registration.

    “Only U.S. citizens can register and vote in our elections,” the statement reads. “It is illegal to lie on any registration forms or voting applications about one’s citizenship status. Doing so is a felony.

    “We are grateful for the swift action of the clerk in this case, who took the appropriate steps and referred the case to law enforcement. We are also grateful to law enforcement for swiftly and thoroughly investigating this case. Anyone who attempts to vote illegally faces significant consequences, including but not limited to arrest and prosecution,” the offices said.

    “Noncitizen voting is an extremely isolated and rare event. Investigations in multiple states and nationwide have found no evidence of large numbers of noncitizens registering to vote.     The Detroit News reported that the voter is a University of Michigan student from China. The Michigan secretary of state’s office said the student contacted the local clerk’s office to see if he could get his ballot back, according to the news outlet. The ballot is expected to count because it cannot be traced back to the voter who cast it.”

    EXCERPT: “Kenya last week granted diplomatic immunity to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and its employees, or “servants,” Tim Schwab reported on Substack.

    Under the new status, the foundation and its employees are exempt from legal action for acts performed as part of their official foundation duties. They also are exempt from paying taxes on their salaries, and they now have the right to own property in Kenya.

    “While nations around the world have long treated Bill Gates as a head of state, it’s now been practically codified into law in Kenya,” wrote Schwab, author of “The Bill Gates Problem: Reckoning with the Myth of the Good Billionaire.”

    Schwab said the decision has raised “alarm bells” within the country and across the world. One public advocate, through a Freedom of Information Act request, has already petitioned the government for documents related to the decision

    Others worry the decision to grant immunity may set a precedent for other billionaire philanthropists. Concerns also have arisen that other nations will be pressured to follow Kenya’s lead and offer immunity to the Gates Foundation in exchange for continued access to the massive resources the foundation pours into other African countries.

    The Government of Kenya’s announcement, Schwab wrote, comes just a week after farmer organizations and religious leaders across the continent called for reparations for the damage the foundation has inflicted on African agriculture through its so-called “green revolution” program….”
