The Ghosts of St. Augustine Lighthouse

I found an interesting ghost story about a lighthouse in Florida—and what better month to share than October!

From GHOSTCITYTOURS.COM:

On the coast of Florida, where the Tolomato and Matanzas Rivers spill out into the unforgiving waters of the Atlantic, stands one of America’s oldest and most haunted structures: the St. Augustine Lighthouse.

Standing 164 feet tall, nestled on the northern edge of Anastasia Island since the mid 1500s, this lone sentry has seen its fair share of history—for better or for worse. From the colonization of the Americas, to the Hundred Years’ War, to the birth of a nation and its subsequent divide, the St. Augustine Lighthouse has stood watch, year after year, through plagues and power struggles, as a beacon of hope in the darkness.

And it has left a mark.

You may not see it at first, but it’s there. Looking up at its twisted, black and white striped base, capped with a blood-red crown, you can almost sense it. That something is off. But it isn’t until you’ve run your fingers along its coquina walls, a mixture of limestone and broken shells, that you can really feel it—what the centuries and the salt have carved out like ancient runes.

It holds memories.

On the ground floor living quarters, where so many lighthouse keepers have laid their heads over the years, the raw, almost sickly-sweet smell of a freshly-lit cigar can be detected, subtle beneath the ocean air. Remnants of a different time, when men huddled around wood-burning stoves and waited out the storms, praying that no lives would be lost on their watch.

Inside the lighthouse proper, climbing the tall, spiraling staircase, the sound of crashing waves and screeching gulls is dampened by the thick walls. The sudden quiet is almost welcome, until a new sound emerges: the bell-like ringing of a little girl’s laughter. It starts at the top of the stairs, high above your head, and works its way down, down, down until it is silenced, abruptly.

In the red room at the very top, the beacon itself sits staring like a giant glass eye, seeing through time to the world that was before. You step out onto the catwalk, taking in Anastasia Island and the enormity of the sea beyond. It feels like you could be one of those lone lighthouse keepers, on duty, eyes on the horizon. That is until you see her, a shadow of a woman in the corner of your eye, holding onto the railing and leaning out into the open air—until she isn’t.

You too grip the railing, white-knuckled, looking out over the trees to the water beyond. You can’t help but wonder what it would feel like if you stepped out too? To be nothing more than another memory left behind at the St. Augustine Lighthouse, standing watch and waiting as the centuries slipped by and history rewrote itself.

The Caretakers

Like all hauntings, the spirits that roam the grounds of the St. Augustine Lighthouse didn’t just appear from nothing. Over the hundreds of years that the structure has stood, many people have come and gone, lived and died, and a few have even remained. The sightings that have been recorded on Anastasia Island have roots that go deep into the history of the lighthouse, much of which is now known to us.

For instance, it may be tempting to disregard the lingering odor of cigars, even despite the site being smoke-free. But for anyone who has ever smelled it, or has even seen the too-tall, shadowy figure that often accompanies it, they will tell you that the sense of fear and foreboding in the air lingers long after the cigar has faded away.

Locals and lighthouse employees refer to this spectre as “The Man,” and he is often seen dressed in a blue jacket and mariner’s cap, walking his route up and down the spiral staircase or looking down from the catwalk above. Because of his tall, thin frame, some believe he is the ghost of William Russel, a protective and dutiful lighthouse keeper from the 1850s. While others point to Joseph Andreu, who fell from the top of a scaffolding in 1859 while putting on a fresh coat of paint.

Regardless of who “The Man” is, it’s clear that his shift has never ended.

And who can forget the children’s laughter that bubbles up from thin air and moves across the grounds, from the caretaker’s home to the top of the lighthouse itself, as if it has a life of its own. While children weren’t uncommon on Anastasia Island, especially in more recent years, there are only so many children who have had a reason to stay.

In 1872, the lighthouse was under construction, overseen by a man named Hezekiah Pittee, who stayed on the island with his wife and two daughters while the project was underway. One afternoon, while Pittee’s daughters and a few of their friends were playing near the lighthouse, tragedy struck, and the island was changed forever.

There was a rail cart that the construction crew used to transport supplies from the nearby pier to the lighthouse, and it had become a part of the girls’ favorite game: pretending they were Spanish pirates moving their hoarded treasure to a secret location. Only one day, while rolling near the cliff’s edge, the rail cart came off its tracks, sending the young girls down into the water below. Some of them were rescued in time, but, unfortunately, both of Mr. Pittee’s daughters were lost to the sea.

If anything can be said, it’s that the children now get to play long after dark. We know because employees of the St. Augustine lighthouse still hear their giggles ringing out in the night, and have been known to find the dirty, child-sized footprints on the floors the next morning.

Which leaves us with one last vestige of the lighthouse’s history, and perhaps one of the most unnerving: the woman on the catwalk.

Maria Mestre de los Dolores stands out for more reasons than just her recent, ghostly sightings. In 1859, she became not only the first woman to serve in the U.S. Coast Guard, but she also became the first Hispanic-American woman to command a federal shore installation: the St. Augustine Lighthouse.

Her appointment came after her husband, the formerly mentioned caretaker Joseph Andreu, met his fateful end. Maria was heartbroken, left on Anastasia Island to follow in the very same footsteps her husband had once walked, and even was known to stand at the edge of the catwalk, looking down to where her husband’s body had once laid, broken.

She can still be found there, on occasion, leaning over the railing and imagining what those last few seconds of Joseph’s life had been like.

There is little doubt that, when it comes to hauntings, there are few places that will leave a mark on its visitors like the St. Augustine Lighthouse. With its rich history, infamous legends, and well-documented sightings, it is clear that what happens on Anastasia Island, stays on Anastasia Island.

  1. Good morning! Another night of not being able to sleep – listening subconsciously for the furnace and hearing the electric heaters going on/off…. sigh…. furnace is still doing the start/stop drill but comes on eventually. I’m calling them tomorrow and telling them to send someone out to install a new igniter. I’ve even got a YT video saved to show ’em how to do it! If they refuse, I’ll buy the danged part and have my friend, Jake, the electrician, install it for me.

Not as cold this morning – 43 now – fed Wheezer as usual, then brought the dish in after he ate his tuna and departed. I don’t believe in ghosts but it’s an interesting story, and I’ve little knowledge of light houses overall being from the flat plains of NE. News from my e-mail:

Just The News: “Actress Susan Olsen, who played Cindy on the hit show “The Brady Bunch,” said that a reboot will not be happening due to her being a conservative. Olsen said during a podcast that a reboot had been pitched in which all the Brady kids had grown up and had different political views. She said it would have been similar to the “Roseanne” reboot in which the family would not agree on politics but still loved each other.

“I am what I was going to portray, so what kind of show would this be if I can’t say anything that’s controversial?” Olsen said on the podcast, according to The Daily Wire. “I did have a phone call with my [TV] siblings calling me and my agent. Everybody was saying, ‘We’re sorry, but they just won’t budge. They just will not have you in this.’ I’m like wow, I’ve been canceled. A role that I’ve played for over 50 years, I can’t play it now because I’m too dangerous.’ So I was like ‘Well, okay guys, good luck, I hope you can sell it.’”

She said that some of the siblings would be “Reagan Republicans,” one would be liberal and another would be libertarian, with views very similar to Olsen’s personal views.

Olsen said that CBS had a 50-page dossier of comments that she had made that they viewed as controversial. She said she stands by every one of the views she had expressed. The actress has previously expressed hesitancy regarding the COVID-19 vaccine and said “gender-affirming” surgeries for minors are causing “irreparable damage.”

Olsen described a Zoom meeting she had with the showrunner, producer, and her agent, in an effort to resolve the issue and proceed with the project. She said the meeting resembled an “inquisition,” as she was asked to comment on her current views on the hot-button issues.

She finally decided to pass on the project. “No, I’m done. At this point, you’re going to have a woke Brady Bunch, and I want no part of it,” she told her agent.”

    1. Good Morning, Pat and Filly,

I’ve been to St Augustine from my childhood on…and it’s a worthwhile tourist destination. A charming little downtown area reminds me of the French Quarter, but it’s more Spanish than French.

It claims to be America’s Oldest City – https://thetravelingseniors.com/americas-oldest-city-the-charms-of-historic-st-augustine-florida/

And there’s a fort! Castillo de San Marcos – I’ve been there – most kids in the area have been there as either a school trip or with their family.

      1. The lighthouse and fort are made of Coquina – “The Rock that Saved St Augustine’

A close-up photo of coquina stone

A Fort Made Out of Seashells?

Who would think that a fort made of seashells would last 300 years? Who would think that a fort made out of seashells would last three days under cannon fire? But the Castillo de San Marcos, made of local coquina stone, did just that. What exactly is this strange rock? How was it formed, and where did it come from? And how did this rock shape the history of St. Augustine?

        How Coquina is Formed

Thousands of years ago, the tiny coquina clam donax variabilis lived in the shallow waters of coastal Florida, as they still do today. These are the small pink, lavender, yellow, or white shells one sees along the beach at the waterline. As the resident clam died, the shells accumulated in layers, year after year, century after century, for thousands of years, forming submerged deposits several feet thick. During the last ice age, sea levels dropped, exposing these shell layers to air and rain. Eventually, the shell became covered with soil, then trees and other vegetation. Rain water percolating through the dead vegetation and soil picked up carbon dioxide and became carbonic acid, the same ingredient that makes soda fizz.

As this weak acid soaked downward, it dissolved some of the calcium in the shells, producing calcium carbonate, which solidified in lower layers, much like how flowstone and stalactites are formed in caves. This material “glued” the shell fragments together into a porous type of limestone we now call coquina, which is Spanish for “tiny shell”.

Coquina is a sedimentary rock that is composed either wholly or almost entirely of the transported, abraded, and mechanically sorted fragments of mollusks, trilobites, brachiopods, or other invertebrates. The term coquina comes from the Spanish word for “cockle” and “shellfish”. Wikipedia

  2. Just The News: “The man prosecutors say tried to kill former President Donald Trump during a round of golf in Florida opposes a broad protective order in the case. Attorneys for Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Hawaii, said prosecutors have put forward an overly broad request for a protective order in the case. Prosecutors said they don’t want Routh to turn over evidence to the media or anyone else.

Routh’s team of attorneys from the Federal Public Defender’s Office said they won’t oppose a less restrictive order, such as the protective orders in the prosecutions that stemmed from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack at the Capitol.

“It would deprive Mr. Routh of his constitutional right to meaningfully participate in his own defense under the Fifth and Sixth Amendments, as well as his right to free speech under the First Amendment,” the defense attorneys wrote. “The Court should instead impose a more tailored protective order like those adopted in similar cases.”

Federal prosecutors previously filed a motion seeking protections for discovery materials in the case that would prohibit Routh from possessing discovery materials outside the presence of his defense team unless authorized by prosecutors.

“Routh himself has proven to be someone who desires the spotlight,” prosecutors wrote in the motion. “Within the past few years, Routh self-published a book in which he called for the assassination of former President Donald J. Trump; exuded condemnation towards the Former President both in public and private messages; attempted to copyright a work of fiction based on his life; drafted multiple letters addressed to various media outlets to discuss his world views; and drafted a separate letter in which he announces a $150,000 bounty for someone to complete his objective of assassinating the Former President.”

Even behind bars, Routh has sought out news agencies. Prosecutors said Routh told his daughter during a phone call from jail that he wanted the addresses for news organizations. He also said that the Bureau of Prisons denied NBC’s request to conduct an interview.

Federal prosecutors charged Routh with possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number and attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate. Routh has pleaded not guilty.”

  3. So proud of my fellow Nebraskan!!! It’s simply mind-boggling how much pure hell Brandon has gone thru just for standing outside the Capitol building for 8 minutes. It was a pre-arranged rally and had NOTHING to do with those on the other side of the building, where the rioting was taking place!

“90 More Days…Reflections on 1,460 Days of Federal Supervision Coming to an End.” — #WalkAway Substack and Brandon Straka, Oct 26, 2024

EXCERPTS: “In 90 Days I will have completed 1,460 days of federal supervision.

This is 4 years to the day that a team of FBI agents in tactical gear, newly under Joe Biden’s and Merrick Garland’s command, stormed my apartment on the morning of Monday, January 25th, 2021, got me out of bed, put me in handcuffs, and took me to jail.

While I was in jail being ordered to strip naked in front of a guard, surrender my personal property, and put on an orange jumpsuit and plastic sandals, the FBI agents in my home were busy seizing my computers, my phones, iPads, hard drives, thumb drives, cameras, and clothing.

I sat in 24 hour lockdown in an 8×8 concrete cell with a metal door, and a tiny vertical window, for 2 and a half days; released in the middle of the night after the government told my first judge at my preliminary hearing that they didn’t believe my “actions” on January 6th warranted detention pending trial. This was shockingly absurd, as just hours before the same DOJ sent the FBI to my home as if they were searching for Osama Bin Laden.

This incident was my first experience with the DOJ’s shameless, irrational, and uncompromising dishonesty. However, this unhinged and unscrupulous deceit would now become an omnipresent new normal in my life, a relentless theme hovering forebodingly over me at all times….”

“….My attorney and I determined in our first conversation that getting felony charges dropped in exchange for a misdemeanor plea was the only way forward for me. The DOJ prosecutor in my case had already told my lawyer that if I pled guilty my case would be resolved in “60 to 90 days”. My attorney told me that nobody goes to jail on a first offense misdemeanor, so if I pled guilty the judge would give me time served on the days I’d just spent in jail, and that within 90 days all of this would be behind me……”

“…..And finally in the late afternoon of the 89th day, the government contacted us to say, “We need 90 more days.” My lawyer told me there was no point in fighting them on it. He said that the judge would grant them the 90 day extension anyway, and all that would be accomplished is that we’d create further friction between us and the DOJ.

And so, we granted them their request for 90 more days. But in keeping with the theme of pathological lying and gaslighting from the government, when they filed their motion for extension they said it was US who wanted extra time because WE were not ready, and that they were graciously granting us an extension. They never miss a single opportunity to flex their muscles and remind you who is running the show.

And so I sat in silence once again for every agonizing minute of the next 89 days. And on the afternoon of the 89th day, the government came back to us once again… “We need 90 more days.”

Despair. Not only because I had already endured 180 days of silence in a case that was supposed to be fully behind me within 60 to 90 days, but because I now understood that nothing the government tells you means anything. It’s arbitrary. Just words. Nothing they say means anything. You can count on nothing.

You’re a hostage being held by the most mentally sick members of our society who, rather than being institutionalized in a sanitarium where they might get the help they desperately need to treat their delusional and insane paranoia about Trump supporters… instead these deranged people have control of the most powerful institutions on the planet, with the ability to do anything they want to me without any oversight……”

“….Finally, the day came for me to be sentenced. Perhaps by this point I was in denial, desperate to believe that once a federal judge got involved with my case, I would finally be in the presence of a fair-minded person who would see the egregious, hideous injustice of all that had happened to me, and that I might finally be treated with humanity. How wrong I was.

My lawyer assured me that it was highly likely I would given time served, as I have no prior record, my guilty plea was on a low level, non-violent misdemeanor, and I never entered the Capitol on January 6th, and I wasn’t a part of the riot that had occurred on the other side of the building.

It was a complete shock when my judge, with a tone of hostility and contempt, spoke of how grievous and heinous my “actions” were on that day. She seemed to take umbrage in having her hands tied by my class b misdemeanor, expressing that due to the low level crime I’d pled to, she was prevented from being able to give me both prison time plus probation. In order to put me on probation, she’d have to give me only house arrest.

And so, she sentenced me… to 90 more days… of home confinement, with a court ordered ankle monitor, confined to the space of my apartment. In addition, I was sentenced to 60 hours of community services, fines, fees, mental health services, and 3 years of federal supervision.

I quickly paid my fines and fees, did my community service, served my house arrest, and now, as of today, I have 90 more days of probation until a 4 year long nightmare comes to an end….”

“….What happens on November 5th will be a stark crossroads in the trajectory of the future of targets of the January 6th prosecutions. If Trump is to become president, we have a shot at pardons, prisoner releases, and the possibility of some sort of restitution. If it is Harris, I expect the DOJ will savagely double and triple down on their quest to destroy as many Trump supporters as they can in their final year of arrests.

    Pray for our country.”

  4. “The Final Boss of Podcasts Meets The Final Boss of Guests: A breakdown of Trump’s best answers on Joe Rogan’s podcast”

    Jordan Sather, Oct 26, 2024

EXCERPT: “Trump has been running a masterful campaign over the last few months. Instead of relying on interviews with “standard” news media, which we know are losing mass amounts of viewers and trust, he has been leaning on the podcast market.

Podcasts allow unscripted, long form discussion of complex issues that typical, short media interviews do not. It humanizes the interviewee, and shows viewers sides of them they might not see with legacy media interaction. It also gives the ability for Trump to reach a younger demographic who consume social media content far more than television, and a voting bloc comprising of more independent, liberal, and undecided voters than he would typically reach.

His latest podcast, going on with Joe Rogan, is breaking the internet. As of writing this, the podcast has been up for 19 hours and has over 18 million views – 1 million views per hour – and that’s just the YouTube listing. It likely has tens, if not hundreds of million more views on Spotify and from clips on Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. (Update: now it’s at 20M views in 21 hours, 2M more before I even finish this article – can’t keep up!)

The way we consume information and stay up to date on news has fundamentally changed over the past few years, and this has changed the campaign process for political candidates as well.

Can you image Kamala talking to Joe Rogan for 3 straight hours, unscripted? In fact, I hope that happens. Quality entertainment.

Here are my thoughts on some of the most relevant soundbites from the Trump/Rogan podcast:

Authenticity Never Seen Before In A Political Candidate (clip/text)

    Conservatives Are The Rebels Now….

    Replacing Taxes With Tariffs….

    Starlink Is Cheap And Revolutionary….

    Circumventing Deep State Generals….

    On 2020 Election Fraud….

Letting RFK Jr. Go Full MAHA….

DECLAS Of JFK Files (& MLK)….

On UFOs and “People From Space”….

All in all – amazing podcast. Truly revolutionary how the legacy media is getting destroyed. Joe Rogan helped seal the deal for Trump’s second term – and third election win. As we’ve been told before, WE ARE THE NEWS NOW!”

  5. ENTIRE ARTICLE: “The Montgomery County Republican Committee Headquarters was forced to evacuate and close today after a violent, profanity-laced bomb threat. The Philly Inquirer reports:

“The ‘pretty profanity-laced’ call was ‘something to the effect of, ‘I’m gonna blow that place up,’ said Christian Nascimento, chair of the Montgomery County GOP. And the caller also said, ‘I’m going to be waiting to shoot you when you leave tonight.’

“The staffer, who works for former President Donald Trump’s campaign, was alone in the office space that the county party shares with campaign staff when he got the call shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday.

“After the two assassination attempts on the former president, his campaign had everyone work virtually, Nascimento said.”

The PA GOP released a statement that reads:

Montgomery County Republican Committee Headquarters forced to close today after staff received a phone call, at 11:07AM, in which the caller communicated an angry, profanity-laced bomb threat. Today’s incident is one of an increasing number of threats, violence, and intimidation acts against GOP candidates, offices, and staff this cycle — on top of two assassination attempts against President Donald Trump.

On September 6, a GOP staffer in Erie County received death threats from a Philadelphia man who said, “Your days are numbered, Bitch!” The messages went on to say: “I will KILL YOU IF YOU DON’T ANSWER ME!” “GONNA F***ING FIND YOU AND SKIN YOU ALIVE AND USE YOUR SKIN FOR F***ING TOILET PAPER, YOU F***ING KKK**T!”

On October 10, individuals forcibly entered the Delaware County Republican headquarters, threatened to kill staff, and blocked them from exiting the building. On October 17, many individuals associated with the GOP received an anonymous letter, which stated: “Should your candidate win…we know where you live, you are in the data base. In the dead of a cold winters night, this year, or next and beyond, there is no knowing what may happen. Your property, your family may be impacted…” “You tread on me at your peril, motherf****r. We look forward to visiting in the future.”

All incidents have been reported to local police departments, Governor Shapiro’s Election Integrity Task force, as well as the FBI. In the meantime, Chairman Lawrence Tabas, of the Republican Party insists the Party’s efforts will be undeterred. “Nothing will stop us from working to elect those who will put our country back on track,” said Tabas.

“And there should be unanimous agreement that political violence has no place in our elections, especially after an innocent Butler County husband and father lost his life to political violence. We emphatically urge Pennsylvanians to voice their opinions by voting, not violence and intimidation.”

NEW: Robert Kenendy Jr. says that Donald Trump is breaking tradition by privately funding his transition team and has already started it three months early.

Kennedy began by talking about why he’s chosen to trust Trump, saying, “I’ve talked to Donald Trump specifically about this, and I said, ‘Look, the last time you were in there, you put John Bolton in charge of NSA, and Mike Pompeo in charge of the CIA… and he said, ‘Here’s the difference… when I got in last time, I had no idea how to govern, and I got surrounded by donors and corporate people who said you appoint this guy and appoint that guy… I appointed a lot of bad people.’

He continued, “I was listening this morning to this extraordinary interview that Donald Trump did with Joe Rogan yesterday… and he said, ‘This time I’m not gonna do that.’ He told us that (too), and he didn’t just promise that, but he did something no other president’s done before. Normally, the transition team is not created until November 6th because GAO, the General Accounting Office, pays for all the cost of the transition team. Trump said, ‘I’m not gonna do it this time. I’m not gonna do it their way. I’m gonna start my own transition team three months early.’ And he got private donors to fund it, and he’s appointed 20 people including me and Tulsi, and there’s people of all different kinds of ideology and people who we’re gonna have to go up against on that transition team and fight for our vision. But I can tell you this, which is unique: there are no corporate lobbyists on that transition team. And, usually, it’s 100% corporate lobbyists. So it’s very, very different, and it gives me lots of hope that this government is gonna be different than any government we’ve ever seen.”
