Real Haunted Houses in America: Part 4

From All That’s Interesting:

7 The Villisca Axe Murders House

On June 9, 1912, in the small town of Villisca, Iowa, someone snuck into the Moore family house with an axe. The murderer killed all eight people inside that night, including six children.

A coroner’s report the following day determined that the killer had snuck in through the unlocked back door and went straight to the bedroom of Josiah and Sarah Moore, aged 43 and 39 respectively. Based on gouges in the ceiling, the coroner determined that the killer raised the axe high and then brought it down on Josiah’s head at least 60 times.

After killing Josiah and Sarah, the killer also bludgeoned their four children plus two more children who had been staying at the house as guests — before disappearing into the night.

“Don’t go in there, boys,” one doctor warned the next day after seeing the scene. “You’ll regret it until the last day of your life.”

The grisly murder remains unsolved to this day. Though a messy investigation ensued, no one was ever convicted of the homicides. Today, the so-called Villisca Axe Murder House is considered by some to be one of the most haunted houses in America. Visitors claim to have heard children’s voices and mysterious footsteps, as well as objects moving on their own.

The very curious — and very brave — can even spend a night at the house. Its current owners have restored it so that it looks just like it did in 1912. They’ve even added details from the night of the murder, like covering all the mirrors with sheets.

“An overnight visit to this house will make most skeptics believers come sunrise the next morning!” the Villisca Axe Murder House website exclaims. But be warned. One paranormal investigator who spent the night at the Villisca Axe Murder House stabbed himself in the chest during the night and had to be evacuated to a nearby hospital.

8 LaLaurie Mansion

To some, the LaLaurie Mansion at 1140 Royal Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter is simply known as the “Haunted House.” Between 1831 and 1834, it was a veritable house of horrors — where a cruel woman tortured the people she enslaved.

New Orleans socialite Marie Delphine LaLaurie bought the house in 1831. Though LaLaurie appeared outwardly warm and polite, rumors swiftly spread that she was cruel toward those she held enslaved at her home. However, no one could have guessed the depth of depravity that went on behind the handsome walls of her house — at least not until a fire forced LaLaurie’s wickedness to the light. As police and firefighters battled the blaze, which broke out suddenly on April 10, 1834, they came across a shocking sight in the attic. There, the horrified responders found enslaved people who had been viciously tortured, mutilated, and murdered.

“Upon entering one of the apartments, the most appalling spectacle met their eyes,” The New Orleans Bee reported the next day. “Seven slaves more or less horribly mutilated were seen suspended by the neck, with their limbs apparently stretched and torn from one extremity to the other…“These slaves were the property of the demon, in the shape of a woman…”

Though LaLaurie skipped town, the spirits of the people she tortured allegedly remained in the mansion. Today, visitors have reported hearing footsteps and moaning from the attic, as well as seeing doors slam closed without explanation. Other hauntings are more severe. When the mansion was briefly a school, terrified young girls reported seeing a “woman” who grabbed and scratched their arm. And one boarder in the house died mysteriously after worrying to a friend about vengeful ghosts. The LaLaurie Mansion was most recently featured in American Horror Story and was briefly owned by actor Nicholas Cage.

    1. Morning, Pat! Still full dark here but I can see the moon and stars so it’s clear. Thankfully, it didn’t get too cold last night but I decided I’m going to buy at least 2 of the oil-filled electric heaters for such times as these. They put out a lot of heat. The usual with Wheezer but he’s moving kinda slow this morning – almost like he’s hurting somewhere but…..it is what it is.

        1. I used to have several of them – living out in the country, there were often rooms that were colder than others – HB had one in her bedroom.

BREAKING: MEGA MILITARY CONTRACTOR CAUGHT FAKING SATELLITE DATA TO TAKE DOWN STARLINK

SpaceX just exposed a dirty ploy by Lockheed Martin and Omnispace to block Starlink’s direct-to-cell service.

Lockheed’s partner allegedly rigged their aging satellite to fake interference and filed bogus FCC complaints, trying to stop Starlink from dominating the 5G space.

In a bombshell FCC filing, SpaceX revealed how Omnispace manipulated its MEO satellite to “intentionally detect” Starlink signals—despite the satellite barely being operational.

SpaceX slammed the claims as “bizarre,” accusing Omnispace of creating “artificial conditions” to fake interference.

The plot thickens: Omnispace refused standard coordination talks and went as far as licensing through Papua New Guinea to dodge regulations.

It’s all part of an effort to sabotage Starlink’s $34.9 billion future in global communications.

Will the FCC see through this sham, or will Lockheed’s shady tactics derail Starlink’s revolution?

  2. All I can say is…..dang, sucks to be them!

Just The News: “At least seven people died Saturday when a ferry dock collapsed on Georgia’s Sapelo Island during a celebration of slave descendants, plunging victims into the waters, authorities said.

Multiple victims were taken to hospitals, and crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and other first responders searched the waters for more people, Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokesperson Tyler Jones told The Associated Press.

Jones said a gangway at the dock collapsed as crowds gathered to celebrate the island’s tiny Gullah-Geechee community of black slave descendants. About 20 people were plunged into the waters, he said. “There have been seven fatalities confirmed,” Jones told AP. The DNR operates the dock, and Jones said authorities did not know what caused the collapse.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp expressed sorrow at the tragedy, and asked residents to stay away, so that first responders had the best chance to save more victims.

“Marty, the girls, and I are heartbroken by today’s tragedy on Sapelo Island,” Kemp wrote on X. “As state and local first responders continue to work this active scene, we ask that all Georgians join us in praying for those lost, for those still in harm’s way, and for their families.”

  5. “Kamala Harris has raised eyebrows with her latest campaign ad that targets black men’s love lives.

The digital ads, which are being run on Snapchat and Instagram, use dating-game style videos to persuade young people to vote.

In the advertisement, a man can be seen approaching a group of women holding balloons who question him on his earnings, height and whether he works out.”

  6. Red State: “Panic is building on the left over the possibility that Muslim-American voters will tank Kamala Harris in key swing states like Michigan and Wisconsin, and CNN has gone code red over the issue.

During a recent roundtable on Abby Phillip’s show, foreign affairs analyst Reena Ninan provided an on-the-ground report after speaking to people in the “Arab-American business sector.” According to Ninan, she did not find a single Muslim voter willing to vote for Kamala Harris. Not one.

NINAN: The business sector in the Arab-American community, and I was really surprised this week to get an earful to hear them say that they would much rather either vote a third party, not vote at all, or vote for Donald Trump. And, I’m telling you, it’s not obviously a significant sample size, but I can not find one Arab-American within my social circle in business or personally who have said they will vote for Kamala Harris.

    PHILLIP: Wow

NINAN: When you look at the polling, it seems sort of neck and neck. What they are saying, and this is not a Donald Trump campaign line, that Tiffany Trump’s father-in-law, who is a Lebanese businessman, has been successful in kind of converting and talking to people, to explain why Trump would be better. Even with the Muslim ban, even with everything else that has happened. They feel that they don’t have any political clout, they don’t have any political operation. The only political power they have is their vote.

I think my favorite part of that is everyone sitting around, mouth-gaping, unwilling to accept that no one cares about the “Muslim ban,” which never actually existed. I guess mainstream press propaganda doesn’t travel quite as far as it used to. Still, what Ninan is saying is dire for Democrats. There are hundreds of thousands of Arab-American voters in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, and with all those states likely to come down to a percentage point, Harris can’t afford to lose a core demographic. Trump doesn’t even have to win a significant portion of those voters, as long as they go vote for Jill Stein or sit at home.

Of course, all of this is caused by Harris’ stance on the war in Gaza. While she has been a staunch critic of Israel and repeatedly called for a “ceasefire,” she also hasn’t shown outright support for Hamas. That is all it takes to make the “pro-Palestinians” despise you, and Democrats are doing their best to cope with the situation. They are desperately trying to convince themselves that these voters will come home when push comes to shove, hoping that they can say “Trump” enough to change the calculus. To that assumption, I ask: Have they ever met a “pro-Palestinian”?

We are talking about single-issue voters who do not care one bit about the rest of the left-wing orthodoxy. The “Palestinian people” could have had peace and prosperity for decades now. Instead, they’ve chosen the most self-destructive path imaginable. Does anyone think they care about Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign? On the contrary, your average “pro-Palestinian” would burn their own house down for spite.

In short, this is a huge problem for Democrats, and CNN is right to be freaking out. Harris doesn’t really have a path to winning back these voters, and with just weeks before the election, the time is running short anyway.”

  7. EXCERPT: “Dr. Victor Davis Hanson, whose work may be found on our sister site Townhall, is a national treasure. Not only is he one of the smartest people in the United States, but he’s probably one of the smartest people on the planet. I’ve been reading his work for a long time now, and I cannot underestimate how much I respect Dr. Hanson. He’s a deep thinker, an educator, and a writer with few, if any, peers.

Now he’s weighing in on the 2024 presidential election, and he is predicting a Trump victory.

Hoover Institution senior fellow Victor Davis Hanson said Friday on his podcast that he believes former President Donald Trump will defeat Vice President Kamala Harris in November.

Polls between Trump and Harris have become a tug-of-war, with political pundits warning about the former president’s gains among key Democratic voting blocs. On “The Victor Davis Hanson Show,” Hanson expressed that the public’s overall judgment of Harris’ character will cause voters to stop supporting her.

“I think the time has run out now. Maybe she could have done this 90 days and had all these, and then she would have had some experience, but she’s tried every type of gymnastics now,” Hanson said. “It takes a while, though. I mean, people are very busy, they’re at work or they have their other interests, so they can’t watch TV, they can’t read the news, but they get enough clips over 90 days. Here and there, they’re driving to work [and] they hear a little bit.”

I’m going to do something I rarely do, and that is to disagree with Dr. Hanson. He mentions “….Harris’ character,” while I would maintain that part of Kamala “Queen of Word Salads” Harris’ problem is that she suffers from an utter lack of character. She is a person of pure expediency; she has no convictions, no principles, no character; she will say or do whatever she thinks the people in front of her at any given moment want to hear.

Even so, Dr. Hanson does, as we would expect, nail Harris’ primary weakness.

“They turn on the TV and they channel surf — they see a little bit. They go online, and a little news flash comes across their screen and it adds up. I think it’s now got to that summation, that people understand that there’s no ‘there’ there, she’s just an empty pants suit — she really is. I think she’s gonna lose, I really do,” Hanson added. “I don’t want to predict, I’m not a good predictor, but it could be what they call a close landslide where she loses by 40 or 50,000 votes but in all seven swing states.”

That seems a plausible scenario to me, in fact, except for the specific numbers, that’s pretty much what I’ve been predicting for the last month or so….”

  8. NF: The Tweet showed briefly @ M’s but has now flipped to the link…..

ENTIRE ARTICLE @ Red State: “Claiming that her clothing sported a “threatening” message, a Marine Corps veteran with over 20 years of service to our country was forced by an airline employee to disrobe in public and don another piece of apparel before being allowed to reboard her flight, she says.

    via KNTV:

A Bay Area veteran said she was shocked and humiliated after being kicked off a Delta flight at San Francisco International Airport because of a T-shirt she was wearing.

Catherine Banks was set to fly out of SFO on Wednesday before a flight attendant told her the shirt she wore was threatening.

“A male flight attendant was saying, ‘Ma’am, ma’am.’ I looked around, like, ‘Who was he talking to?’ And it was me. He said, ‘You need to get off the plane,’ and I was like, ‘What did I do?’” [Catherine] Banks said.

It wasn’t until she got off the plane and on the jet bridge when the flight attendant told her why she was asked to deplane.

Banks explained that when “[h]e said that shirt [she was] wearing is threatening,” all she could manage was disbelief:

I said, “Are you kidding me? I’m a Marine Corps vet. I’m going to see my Marine sister. I’ve been in the Marine Corps for 22 years and worked for the Air Force for 15 years. I’m going to visit her.”

The employee wasn’t moved by her words, she said:

He said, “I don’t care about your service, and I don’t care about her service. The only way you’re going to get back on the plane is if you take it off right now.”

And what was the allegedly “threatening” message? “Do Not Give In To The War Within. End Veteran Suicide”:

Banks said it’s a cause that’s close to her heart. SFGATE reported that her t-shirt is all about honoring and supporting soldiers who need help with mental health:

Banks’ shirt is sold by Til Valhalla Project, which honors soldiers by raising funds for families to receive memorial plaques after their loved ones die and to help pay for therapy for struggling veterans.

Adding to the embarrassment for Banks, she was not wearing a bra beneath her shirt, so had to turn around to maintain her privacy. She said she changed into a sweatshirt. But the ordeal wasn’t over. After she was allowed back on the flight, she was told she could not return to her seat (with extra legroom, which she had paid for), but had to take a different seat in the back of the plane. The delay also caused her to miss a connecting flight.

Here are Delta Airlines’ rules on the reasons it can remove a passenger from a flight:

On Delta’s website, the air carrier said it reserved the right to remove passengers from a plane “when the passenger’s conduct, attire, hygiene or odor creates an unreasonable risk of offense or annoyance to other passengers.”

Banks told KNTV that the airline reached out to her on Friday to “make it right.” So far, there’s been no comment from Delta on any resolution.”

  12. OK, according to Wiki:

“Whether condoms were used in ancient civilizations is debated by archaeologists and historians.[1]: 11  Societies in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome preferred small families and are known to have practiced a variety of birth control methods.[1]: 12, 16–17, 22  However, these societies viewed birth control as a woman’s responsibility, and the only well-documented contraception methods were female-controlled devices (both possibly effective, such as pessaries, and ineffective, such as amulets).[1]: 17, 23  The writings of these societies contain subtle references to male-controlled contraceptive methods that might have been condoms, but most historians interpret them as referring to coitus interruptus or anal intercourse.[1]: 21, 24

    ————–

Prior to the 15th century, some use of glans condoms (devices covering only the head of the penis) is recorded in Asia. Glans condoms seem to have been used for birth control, and to have been known only by members of the upper classes. In China, glans condoms may have been made of oiled silk paper, or of lamb intestines. In Japan, condoms called Kabuto-gata (甲形) were made of tortoise shell or animal horn.[1]: 60–1 [3] In England, there is evidence that condoms made of animal organs were available in the time of Henry VIII (the mid-1500s).[4][5][6]

Navajo Code Talker John Kinsel passes away at age 107, Navajo Nation announces

Kinsel served in the Battle of Iwa Jima in World War II, using the Diné language to hide communications from the Japanese.

The Navajo Code Talkers have been cited as an instrumental piece to the American victory in World War II, especially during the coordinated island hopping campaign in Iwa Jima, Guadalcanal and Okinawa.

“Kinsel was a revered Navajo Code Talker and an American hero, whose legacy as a Code Talker is marked not only by his service but by his continued dedication to sharing the story of the Navajo Code Talkers with future generations,” said Council Delegate Carl R. Slater.
