Interesting Turkey Vulture Facts

1 They aren’t turkeys

There are over 20 species of birds known as vultures, and their taxonomy is a bit muddled. The Old-World vultures are relatively straightforward, but there is a group of American birds whose relationship with them is still under assessment. Turkey vultures are part of this group, and so named because they have red, featherless heads, sort of like a turkey. This is the only reason, though, and not because they’re remotely related to turkeys, or even that they really eat turkeys, although they probably would if they showed up at Thanksgiving and everyone had left it just sitting there at the table. 

2 They’re New-World Vultures

Old World vultures are the ones related to eagles and buzzards and other raptors, whose prey drive has mostly worn off and who are happy to scavenge carrion from animals with more energy to hunt, and then there are the ones in the Americas, whose origin is a bit hard to determine. Turkey vultures are vultures, but they’re New World vultures, and these were once thought to be a branch of storks that have picked up a taste for rotting meat. 

However, recent DNA research suggests they might be more related to the first group than we thought, and that New World vultures may indeed be a sister group to the Accipitriformes, or raptor order. Regardless, turkey vultures are one of about seven species of New World vultures, so named for their distribution across the Americas.

3 They’re very adaptable 

As far as the distribution of this species goes, it’s the most widespread vulture in the Americas. They range from Southern Canada, all the way down into South America, and most places in between. They achieve this incredible range by being highly adaptable as a species and can be comfortable in anything from arid, open areas to thicker woodlands and forests. 

Its habitat preference is a mix of these two extremes, and it will happily scavenge meat from various sources within it. They’ll also thrive amid human refuse and can eat what gets thrown away in the cities. But they’ll also kill things on occasion, such as young birds or sick mammals. They’ll even eat plant matter like pumpkins and coconuts, increasing their option across a range of circumstances. 

4 They forage by smell

This is uncommon in the bird world, where sight is typically used. Turkey vultures will hover low to the ground to detect the odor of ethyl mercaptan, a gas created by the start of decay in dead animals. Due to this, other birds such as black vultures and condors will follow the turkey vulture to find carcasses.

5 They’re the most migratory of the NW vultures

Not only do these vultures thrive across the continents, they move through them, too. They’re considered partial migrants because some populations move more than others. Populations in the North migrate more, coming down from the cold during Winter and heading back up when it’s more temperate. The longest trips are from the Western US down to Mexico and South America, and some of these trips can include thousands of birds.

6 They’re posers

Turkey vultures display a behavior that’s known as Horaltic pose. This is basically a power stance with the wings spread wide, and researchers can’t agree on exactly why it’s happening.  Some suggest it’s a way of drying the bird’s wings, warming the body, or getting UV treatment for parasites they might have. It’s much more common after damp nights, so it could have a thermoregulating component to it, but whatever it is, it looks really cool!

7 They pee on their own legs 

Speaking of cool, these birds engage in urohidrosis, which is a fun way to say they pee on themselves. Since they can’t sweat, wet bird excreter functions as a medium for evaporative cooling, and is released onto the bald skin of the legs, which they do in public and even at social gatherings, suggesting they’re just no shame in it in their community.

8 They feed chicks by regurgitating

Turkey vultures will typically lay two eggs on cliffs, caves or rock crevices. Chicks will hatch 30-40 days later and be cared for by both parents for 10-11 weeks. During this time, adults will regurgitate food for them until they leave the nest between 8-11 weeks.

9 They’ve had a bad time

Wetting your legs with your own waste is enough to ruin a relationship but the image issues these vultures have faced among the human populations don’t stem from their pooping habits. Many used to believe these carrion feeders brought disease with them, and some thought it would kill livestock, so they have been persecuted historically, despite the fact that neither is true. 

In fact, this species is complicit in the reduction of disease by way of removing waste and rotting meat from the system. In the United States, turkey vultures are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which makes killing them illegal.

10 They’re doing fine

And despite their troubles, this species is doing great. It’s estimated that there are over 18 million individuals left, covering an incredible range of over 28 million square kilometers. This is one of the most abundant raptorial birds in the world.

    1. Morning, Pat! Awfully fugly birds!!! We have Turkey Buzzards around here but they don’t have red heads. There were about 5-6 that always flew over Verges Park when I worked at the museum. I went out to smoke one morning and saw at least 5 of them perched on the roof of the one-room schoolhouse – spreading their wings in the sun to dry them before taking off for the day. I snapped a picture of them, which I left at the museum. We see them all over in NE, mostly over larger groves of trees. I’ve never seen any here, tho.

      Well, then…..I turned on the patio light to discover Wheezer on the chair watching as a black calico cat (much thinner than Wheezer) was cleaning up the remaining dry cat food in the dish. When I stepped outside, he/she freaked out, trying to find it’s way back outside. Hit the screen door a few times before finally finding the doggie door to vamoose. Meanwhile, Wheezer just watched from the chair. I came in to get the tuna and more dry food and, when I stepped back out, he jumped down and rubbed up against my legs while I was dishing out the tuna. If more strays start showing up, this food station will go out of business!!!

      So far, the furnace is working normally….hope that continues until he replaces the gas valve. Temp is much higher this morning – 48 vs. 29 yesterday. We’ve got a few more warm days coming up at least.

        1. I kept waking up thru the night, listening to make sure it was still heating….🤞🤞🤞🤞

          Oh, calico can show up in any color cat but it’s often diluted, with only a few orange or white streaks here and there. That’s what this one was – mostly black w/a few orange spots. It just means there was a calico somewhere in the gene pool.

    2. Good morning, Pat and Filly – chilly 40s here this morning and tomorrow morning – high today only 70º!!! Hoping to get a lot of yard work done without all the heat/humidity in the middle of the day.

      I’ll be going back to the Village on Friday for the weekend and back home Sunday night for a doctor appt. Mon AM to see about hurting foot that the ortho PA says is arthritis. It takes the joy out of walking and limits real exercise. Might be age-related and nothing can be done to help it. Maybe collagen or steroid injection?

    Story at a Glance:

    •To maximize profits, the pharmaceutical industry will often identify vulnerable groups who lack the ability to advocate for themselves and refuse pharmaceutical products.

    •When the DPT vaccine was first developed over a century ago, it was tested at Irish orphanages.  Recently mass graves of those early test subjects were discovered.

    •Since the DPT vaccine hit the market, physicians around the world have observed waves of infant deaths following its use, which were often sudden and inexplicable (along with many other severe side effects).

    •Numerous data sources correlate increasing childhood vaccination rates with increasing infant deaths.  Those deaths played a key role in creating the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act. That forgotten data compromises the majority of this article.

    •When the COVID lockdowns happened, vaccine safety activists predicted the lockdowns would lead to an unprecedented drop in infant deaths since children were skipping their vaccines.  This ended up being exactly what happened, and it was reconfirmed by infant deaths dropping in Florida after the pandemic prompted many parents to begin not vaccinating their children.

    Note: due to the significant interest in this topic, this article is a revised version of a previously published article about it.The Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) that was seen worldwide after the COVID-19 vaccines rolled out was so unmistakable that it made the general public see how much their governments had lied to them. What is less known, however, is the link between vaccines and the sudden death of children (euphemistically called Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS).

    Like SADS, SIDS has a clear-cut relationship to vaccination, and in the case of SIDS, there is over a century of evidence to substantiate it. Like SADS, our healthcare authorities have worked tirelessly to conceal this link, even when faced with significant protests from the public who know what is happening. For the most part, these authorities have succeeded, and as a society, we have come to see SIDS as a normal event that does not require an investigation each time another child dies from vaccination.

    I was compelled to write about this topic for a few key reasons:

    •The children who died from SIDS and their parents deserve recognition and justice. Because of the attention highlighting SADS and vaccine dangers in general, I believe this may, at last, be possible.

    •Infants cannot speak up for themselves (other than by crying, which is typically ignored). When you observe these vaccine injuries and the trauma they experience, it’s very apparent what happened, but in almost all cases, those around them can’t see it—so I feel I have a duty to speak out for those without a voice.

    •Understanding how the government has handled SIDS provides essential context for understanding how it has dealt with SADS.

    •New evidence supporting the link between SIDS and vaccination emerged during COVID-19.

    In this article, I have done the best I could to provide all the evidence clearly demonstrating this link with a focus on that which can explain why vaccination causes SIDS. Additionally, I have also discussed much of this with a US government researcher who specializes in the vaccine most associated with SIDS and has requested their privacy be respected for understandable reasons….”

      Robert Roberson’s execution by lethal injection is scheduled for Thursday. 

      Roberson, 57, is accused of shaking his 2-year-old daughter, Nikki Curtis, to death in the East Texas city of Palestine. Roberson has said he is innocent.

      Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, can only grant clemency with a recommendation from the board.”

  15. Just The News: “The Secret Service is in need of “fundamental reform,” according to an independent panel that is investigating the July 13 assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler. 

    In a 52-page report released on Thursday, the panel said the agency failed to properly secure the building that the gunman stood on when he shot into the rally. One rally attendee was killed and two others were wounded. A bullet hit Trump’s ear.

    “The failure to secure a complex of buildings, portions of which were within approximately 130 yards of the protectee and containing numerous positions carrying high-angle line of sight risk, represents a critical security failure,” the report said. 

    “Relying on a general understanding that ‘the locals have that area covered’ is simply not good enough and, in fact, at Butler this attitude contributed to the security failure.,” it also said.

    The report found several communications problems that were caused, in part, by having two separate command posts at rally site for local law enforcement and the Secret Service.

    “This created, at the highest level, a structural divide in the flow of communications,” read the report.

    In a letter attached to the report, the panel said another incident like Butler could happen again without significant reform within the agency.

    “The Secret Service as an agency requires fundamental reform to carry out its mission,” the authors of the report wrote to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. “Without that reform, the Independent Review Panel believes another Butler can and will happen again.”

    Libya became a safe haven for terrorists, and Benghazi was at the center of it all. Trump not only knew that Benghazi had been turned into “a full blown training center for jihadists,” he also knew that President Obama was responsible for it.

    Why was Libya turned into a safe haven for terrorist training? The never ending “war on terror” has been a complete lie from the beginning.

    President Bush took us to war in Afghanistan because it had become the ‘training center’ for jihadists who were blamed for the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. That wasn’t the reason we went to war in Afghanistan, but I’ll get to that in a coming article on 9/11.

    The CIA/shadow government needed a ‘new’ safe haven training center for jihadists, and by overthrowing Gaddafi, Al Qaeda now controlled the government in Libya. It was the perfect place to fund, train and arm terrorists while our controlled media painted the “new Libya” as a fledgling democracy that needed our support.(taxpayers’ money)

    After waging war against terrorist training camps in Afghanistan, we were now using taxpayers’ money to build training camps in Libya.Benghazi also exposes something else.

    The Benghazi scandal proved that politics is just a big game to fool the American people. Politicians on both sides are just part of the big club. Trump has known for a long time that politics is just a game, and he was doing his best to expose it years before he ever announced he was running for president.

    Trump already knew who his two main opponents would be in the coming 2016 election. Trump was fighting against the establishment, and knew that he faced enemies in both parties.But Trump purposely tied Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton to Benghazi.Why?

    Remember, Jeb Bush is a CIA asset and was also a bagman for his dad. I wrote about that in my earlier article in this series titled:

    The dialogue was translated for The Post by Jeremy Freeman, a London-based forensic lip reader who was born deaf and for 16 years has served as a University College London-certified expert witness for litigants, the police and journalists.

    Here’s some of what they said during that conversation, according to the lip reader. 

    “She’s not as strong as me,” said Biden, 81, according to the translation, which was produced by analyzing the on-video lip movements during the discussion.

    “I know … that’s true,” the popular former president agreed, adding, “We have time.”

    “Yeah, we’ll get it in time,” said Biden, who was forced by fellow Democrats to relinquish the party’s nomination in favor of Harris on July 21 in a mutiny that Obama was believed to support.

    Moments earlier, Obama said, “it’s important that we have some time together” in a possible reference to campaigning alongside Harris.

    That would explain the look on his face, if he’s upset that after he agreed to step aside, now he’s petrified she’s going to lose, which would mean they hosed him and lost anyway. There are other words in there, I assume the lip reader wasn’t able to pick them all up. 

    But they in fact don’t have a lot of time left, so what do they intend to do? Sounds like Obama had something in mind if he was suggesting they have further discussion — “have some time together.” …..”

  42. DID A MEGA YARD JOB TODAY!

    Installed the adapter and a saw blade to my Ryobi 40v string trimmer and then trimmed the bushes at the edge of the woods.

    The grape vines, smilax and privet had gotten to leaning over the lawn so I couldn’t mow underneath. All the limbs and branches made a pile about 10 feet long and 3-4 feet high!

    It was a good hard therapy job after a hard weekend with Sally Q – and in advance of another hard week.

    Fixing to go get in the tub and soak my old muscles and try to drown any ticks that might have gotten past the heavy coating of Deep Woods Off.

  43. Just The News: “Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued a doctor in Dallas on Thursday, who allegedly provided transgender care to 21 minors, despite a state law prohibiting them from doing so.

    The Texas Supreme Court upheld a state law in June that bans gender-affirming care for transgender minors, including access to puberty blockers, and transition surgery. But the Dallas doctor, identified as Dr. May Chi Lau, allegedly provided hormone-replacement therapy to 21 minors between October 2023 and August 2024. The law was initially enacted in 2023. 

    Paxton claimed the doctor, who specializes in adolescent medicine, used “false diagnoses and billing codes” to hide illegal prescriptions, according to NBC News.

    “Texas passed a law to protect children from these dangerous unscientific medical interventions that have irreversible and damaging effects,” Paxton said in a statement. “Doctors who continue to provide these harmful ‘gender transition’ drugs and treatments will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

    We’ve all probably heard the idiom that “Freedom of Speech is the First Amendment because it’s the most important”.     3. Check on Government Power: Freedom of speech acts as a safeguard against tyranny and corruption by allowing criticism of government actions. It enables the press to report on abuses of power, which is vital for transparency and accountability.
    4. Promotes Social Progress and Innovation: The free flow of information and ideas fosters innovation, scientific advancement, and social change. History shows that many societal improvements have come from individuals or groups challenging the status quo through speech.
    5. Cultural Diversity and Exchange: It promotes cultural diversity by allowing different voices, cultures, and viewpoints to be heard. This diversity enriches society, preventing cultural stagnation and promoting mutual understanding.
    6. Protection of Other Rights: Many other rights depend on the ability to speak freely. For instance, the right to protest, to practice religion, or to engage in political activity all hinges on the ability to express oneself without fear of reprisal.
    7. Error Correction: In the marketplace of ideas, freedom of speech allows for the correction of errors. False or harmful ideas can be openly debated and refuted, leading to a more accurate understanding of truth.
    8. Personal Development: Engaging with diverse viewpoints through speech can lead to personal growth, empathy, and a broader perspective on life, which is essential for individual development and societal harmony.
    9. Legal and Philosophical Justifications: Philosophically, many argue that freedom of speech is intrinsic to human nature.     Just for you to know, there is a guy, Professor Owen Anderson, who is suing the Arizona State University for this mandatory anti-white DEI training for faculty, as the ‘ASU Inclusive Communities’ course allegedly includes concepts such as ‘white fragility,’ ‘white privilege,’ and ways to ‘critique whiteness.’

  46. The United States’ secretive Special Operations Command is looking for companies to help create deepfake internet users so convincing that neither humans nor computers will be able to detect they are fake.

    The document specifies that JSOC wants the ability to create online user profiles that “appear to be a unique individual that is recognizable as human but does not exist in the real world,” with each featuring “multiple expressions” and “Government Identification quality photos.”

    The Pentagon wants to use AI to create deepfake internet users…

    EXCERPT: “Natasha Miller says she was getting ready to do her job preserving donated organs for transplantation when the nurses wheeled the donor into the operating room. She quickly realized something wasn’t right. Though the donor had been declared dead, he seemed to her very much alive.

    “He was moving around — kind of thrashing. Like, moving, thrashing around on the bed,” Miller told NPR in an interview. “And then when we went over there, you could see he had tears coming down. He was crying visibly.”

    The donor’s condition alarmed everyone in the operating room at Baptist Health hospital in Richmond, Ky., including the two doctors, who refused to participate in the organ retrieval, she says. “The procuring surgeon, he was like, ‘I’m out of it. I don’t want to have anything to do with it,’ ” Miller says. “It was very chaotic. Everyone was just very upset.”

    Miller says she overheard the case coordinator at the hospital for her employer, Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA), call her supervisor for advice.

    “So the coordinator calls the supervisor at the time. And she was saying that he was telling her that she needed to ‘find another doctor to do it’ – that, ‘We were going to do this case. She needs to find someone else,’ ” Miller says. “And she’s like, ‘There is no one else.’ She’s crying — the coordinator — because she’s getting yelled at.”

    “Everybody’s worst nightmare”

    The organ retrieval was canceled. But some KODA workers say they later quit over the October 2021 incident, including another organ preservationist, Nyckoletta Martin. “I’ve dedicated my entire life to organ donation and transplant. It’s very scary to me now that these things are allowed to happen and there’s not more in place to protect donors,” says Martin.

    Martin was not assigned to the operating room that day, but she says she thought she might get drafted. So she started to review case notes from earlier in the day. She became alarmed when she read that the donor showed signs of life when doctors tried to examine his heart, she says. “The donor had woken up during his procedure that morning for a cardiac catheterization. And he was thrashing around on the table,” Martin says.

    Cardiac catheterization is performed on potential organ donors to evaluate whether the heart is healthy enough to go to a person in need of a new heart. Martin says doctors sedated the patient when he woke up and plans to recover his organs proceeded.

    KODA officials downplayed the incident afterwards, according to Martin. She was dismayed at that, she says.

    “That’s everybody’s worst nightmare, right? Being alive during surgery and knowing that someone is going to cut you open and take your body parts out?” Martin says. “That’s horrifying.”

    The patient

    Donna Rhorer of Richmond, Kentucky, told NPR that her 36-year-old brother, Anthony Thomas “TJ” Hoover II, was the patient involved in the case. He was rushed to the hospital because of a drug overdose, she says.

    Rhorer was at the hospital that day. She says she became concerned something wasn’t right when TJ appeared to open his eyes and look around as he was being wheeled from intensive care to the operating room.

    “It was like it was his way of letting us know, you know, ‘Hey, I’m still here,’ ” Rhorer told NPR in an interview….”

        Dr. Robert Cannon, a transplant surgeon at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, described a similar incident during the congressional hearing where Martin’s letter was disclosed. It happened at a hospital outside of Alabama.

        “We actually were in the operating room. We had actually opened the patient and were in the process of sort of preparing their organs, at which point the ventilator triggered and so the anesthesiologist at the head of the table spoke up and said, ‘Hey, I think this patient might have just breathed,’” Cannon later told NPR in an interview. “If the patient breathes, that means they’re not brain dead.”

        Nevertheless, a representative from the OPO wanted to proceed anyway, Cannon says. He refused.

        “We were kind of shocked that an OPO person would have so little knowledge about what brain death means that they would say, ‘Oh, you should just go ahead.’ And we thought, ‘No. We’re not going to take any risk that we murder a patient.’ Because that’s what it would be if that patient was alive.”
