Creepy Insect: Giant Camel Spider

It’s October again…time for all things creepy.  This giant camel spider fits the bill!

From All That’s Interesting:

The camel spider is everything that arachnophobes fear. It’s ugly, huge, and the subject of many a tall tale. The myths surrounding this creature were popularized in 2003, at the height of the Iraq war, when American soldiers began spotting its spindly body in the unforgiving Middle Eastern desert.

Prior to terrorizing the troops, though, the critter was the subject of many a fable told by the Persians who first laid eyes on it. But despite its fearsome appearance, the camel spider (which actually isn’t really a spider) is harmless to humans. What’s more, it only lives for one year in the wild — and spends most of its time in hiding from the blistering sun.

The Camel Spider Isn’t Really a Spider

The camel spider actually belongs to the class Arachnida and is correctly known as the solifugae. And despite its catch-all name, the solifugae is actually comprised of more than 1,000 species in more than 150 described genera. Though frequently confused for both scorpions and spiders, they’re technically not either one. They’re cousins with pseudoscorpions and mites.

According to National Geographic, the Persians would often tell tales of this fearsome-looking creature standing impossibly tall, running through the desert like a whirlwind, and feasting on the corpses of humans and camels that dared to cross its path. While invariably cool-sounding, it’s actually not true. Camel spiders don’t feast on humans, camels, or any other large mammal. Instead, the solifugae — which is sometimes also known as the wind scorpion or the sun spider — only stands about six inches in length at full maturity. And despite further tales of its “fast and furious” speed, its top speed is 10 miles per hour — just slightly faster than the average human.

The Camel Spider Has a Voracious Appetite

While the camel spider is harmless to humans, bugs don’t stand a chance against it. A review of the solifugae diet by the Denver Museum of Nature and Science reveals that it loves to feast on wasps, termites, beetles, and silverfish.

And it’s not just critters that solifugae love to feast on: it also loves other insects, small birds, and even small snakes. If given a chance, it will gorge itself — often becoming so big that it will be unable to move, especially if it eats too fast. As a general rule, though, the wind scorpion won’t eat prey that’s bigger than itself.

That said, though, it’s far from a timid creature. Despite claims that it will scream while it’s running toward its prey, it actually moves in relative silence. And it’s actually quite aggressive — especially if it feels cornered or otherwise threatened. Though it has no venom glands, the camel spider does have sharp pincers called chelicerae that will hurt if it makes contact with human skin.

And while the bite won’t require medical attention, it’s always a good idea to clean the bite with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to avoid infection, in the rare instance that it does bite you. But, as a general rule: if you leave it alone, it will leave you alone.

Urban Legends About the Camel Spider Are Greatly Exaggerated

It seems the origins of the “larger-than-life” camel spider first started getting legs in 2004, when a mass e-mail purporting to show gigantic solifugae threatening the lives of the American soldiers in Iraq began making the rounds. Long before Facebook became a hub of misinformation, spam e-mails featuring the photo above began circulating through gullible people’s inboxes.

“From someone stationed in Baghdad … It’ll give you a better idea of what our troops are dealing with,” read the e-mail that accompanied the photo above. But, according to the sergeant who took the photo, the actual size of the camel spider in the photo above was no more than 4 centimeters (about 1.6 inches), and the creature’s oversized appearance is due to forced perspective.

“Photos that purport to show creatures six times that size have misleading perspective—the spider is invariably placed in the foreground where the lens makes it appear much bigger than its actual size,” reports National Geographic.

The misinformation was so widespread, in fact, that when Rod Crawford, of the Burke Museum, attempted to clear up the camel spider’s bad name, he was met with abusive e-mails accusing him of disrespecting the troops.

“One person offered to have his brother in Iraq send me a 30-cm specimen, but backed down when the brother claimed he couldn’t get an export permit,” he wrote. “No one has ever explained how they measured speed or jumping height, and of course no one has ever produced a specimen found eating human or camel flesh.”

In reality, though, the camel spider is so afraid of humans that if you see one running toward you, it’s not because it wants to devour you alive. It’s because you offer something that they’re desperate for in the extreme heat of the Iraqi desert: a huge shadow.

  1. Morning All!
lots of stars out there this morning…but that doesn’t mean a sunny day–I’ve learned that…lol
my daughter and her husband sent photos of their skies last evening…seems from their house and farm, they could see the northern lights! up here (north of them) we could not. but we’re surrounded by mountains

    1. Morning, Pat! I can see stars as well; supposedly, some clouds moving in today. I went out and called to Wheezer since he wasn’t on the chair; within 2 seconds, my motion-detector light came on and he popped thru the doggie door. I woke up to chirping from my smoke detector in my BR – this is only the 3rd time I’ve had to change the battery but it’s a PITA, requiring a ladder since it’s hardwired in the ceiling.

    1. Trump is running essentially unopposed, despite major efforts to block him. Kamala and Walz are weak opponents, bred to politics, and wishy washy. The US is not sovereign and has been meddling in other countries’ affairs since its inception. I would like to see the US start minding its own business, for a change. It keeps recreating itself, like a chameleon. Do we have any values we can agree on?

I’m not buying what this author is selling. the author suggests the maggot picked the cackler to get back at the dem party for kicking him to the curb–it’s his revenge. that’s bullshit. the cackler is the ONLY one who could access his campaign funds because her name was also on it. it wasn’t the maggot’s idea. the stuff after that? appearing on tv for bulletins and stuff to steal her thunder, that is all him/dr jill. but not the initial decision.

  3. Interesting that camel spiders have been so maligned, but cameras do distort perspective. Also interesting that their diet includes bugs that plague me, that thrive on humidity, like termites and ants in summers. Do they spin webs?

    1. EXCERPT: “Large, tan, hairy, and ferocious-looking, the camel spider is the stuff of legend — urban legend, that is. While these creatures are undoubtedly large, they are by no means half the size of a human and in the habit of dining on camel stomachs and sleeping soldiers.

“Camel spiders, which are arachnids, but not spiders, are definitely unique little critters,” said entomologist Christy Bills, invertebrate collections manager at the Utah Museum of Natural History.“

Unfortunately, some people assign them fierce characteristics because of their appearance. They do not disembowel camels, jump in the air nor run after humans. … In captivity, they are quite the divas and require princess-like accommodations to be kept alive.” …..

      1. Yes, Filly, and thank you. But I’m reading on-line about the disastrous situation that still exists in North Carolina, with more missing people than the news reports. No power, no water, so unable to identify or discard of the dead bodies. FEMA interfering with local efforts. How much is accurate? I’m not there and can’t say.

  5. EXCERPT: “Lost in the headlines that an Afghan refugee admitted into the U.S. by the Biden-Harris administration was plotting an Election Day terror attack for ISIS was a troubling revelation: the adult defendant allegedly had a 17-year-old accomplice. Oklahoma school officials are now scrambling to determine the activities, ties and motives of that student who attended classes virtually in the Moore school district just outside Oklahoma City.

“There’s a co-conspirator here that was actually a student in a public school here in Oklahoma City that was arrested by the FBI on Tuesday. So you’ve got a terrorist in a public school,” Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters told the “Just the News, No Noise” television show Thursday night.

Walters and other authorities declined to release the name of the student because he is a juvenile but he attended the Southmoore High School, taking classes online, according to a letter sent to parents in the school district and obtained by Just the News.

You can read that letter here: https://justthenews.com/sites/default/files/2024-10/LetterToFamilies_ActiveInvestigation_Oct9-2024_FINAL.pdf

In charging documents made public on Wednesday, federal prosecutors allege 27-year-old Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, an Afghan refugee who settled in Oklahoma City after he was paroled into the U.S. in September 2021 after the bungled withdrawal from Afghanistan, was seeking to attack an Election Day site.

Prosecutors alleged that Tawhedi and the 17-year-old co-conspirator sold their family’s personal property on Facebook and then met Oct. 7 with an FBI asset in rural Oklahoma to try and purchase two AK-47 assault rifles, 10 magazines and 500 rounds of ammunition to further the terror plot.

Walters said his agency is working with federal and state authorities to determine what the student did during his time in Oklahoma and whether he had any concerning contacts with other students.

    ————–

Sources told NBC News on Wednesday that Tawhedi was working as a security guard for the CIA in Afghanistan before the United States’ withdrawal from the country, but that his radicalization in support of ISIS likely occurred during his three-year stay in the United States….”

  6. Just The News: “Nine people are confirmed dead in the state of Florida as a result of Hurricane Milton, according to reports. Officials confirmed the death toll had risen on Thursday. Rescuers are continuing to conduct operations to look for bodies, according to NBC News. “One person died after a tree fell,” Volusia County Sheriff Michael J. Chitwood said, according to the outlet. St. Petersburg has received roughly 18 inches of rain.

Milton started out as a Category 5 storm but has since been downgraded to a Category 1. As of now there are roughly three million people without power due to the hurricane.

“What we can say is the storm was significant, but thankfully this was not the worst case scenario,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said during a press conference. “The storm did weaken before landfall and the storm surge as initially reported has not been as significant overall as what was observed for Hurricane Helene.

“Right now it looks like Sarasota County had the most significant storm surge, likely somewhere between eight to 10 feet,” he added. “And remember, with Helene we had 15 to 20 feet in Taylor County.”

  7. Just The News: “United States District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan on Thursday agreed to unseal pieces of evidence in special prosecutor Jack Smith’s election interference case against former President Donald Trump.

Chutkan previously released Smith’s briefing on the case, but will now disclose redacted exhibits that accompanied the brief. The exhibits could include evidence like grand jury transcripts and other texts, per The Hill.

Trump has signaled opposition to unsealing both the brief and the evidence accompanying it, especially with less than one month until November’s presidential election. However, Chutkan claimed Trump’s concern over the unsealing impacting the 2024 election was not a legal basis to deny Smith’s request.

“[T]he court determines that the Government’s proposed redactions to the Appendix are appropriate, and that Defendant’s blanket objections to further unsealing are without merit,” Chutkan wrote. “As the court has stated previously, ‘Defendant’s concern with the political consequences of these proceedings’ is not a cognizable legal prejudice.”

The development is part of Smith’s ongoing effort to prosecute Trump over the January 6 riot in 2021, despite the Supreme Court’s ruling that a president is immune to prosecution over issues relating to the Constitutional duties of the office, and has presumptive immunity over actions that are still within his presidential authority.

Smith has argued that Trump’s actions on January 6, where he allegedly tried to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, were committed as a private citizen and therefore are not protected by the Supreme Court ruling.

Chutkan said that she will delay the release for one week, at Trump’s request, while he evaluates litigation options relating to the order.

“There should be no further disclosures at this time of the so-called ‘evidence’ that the Special Counsel’s Office has unlawfully cherry-picked and mischaracterized — during early voting in the 2024 Presidential election,” Trump’s legal team wrote in an earlier filing Thursday.

The former president’s team also has until November 7 to file their rebuttal to Smith’s brief.”

  8. Just The News: “A federal judge in New York on Thursday set the trial for hip-hop star Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sex trafficking case to begin on May 5, 2025.

Combs was arrested and charged with sex trafficking, transportation to engage in prostitution, and racketeering conspiracy last month, in New York City. The charges comes after a months-long investigation, which included raids on his homes in Miami and Los Angeles. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Johnson on Thursday revealed in court that 96 electronic devices were snagged during the raids in March, the Associated Press reported. Another four devices were seized during Combs’ arrest, and prosecutors are currently sifting through over 90 terrabytes of data that were on devices in Miami.

Johnson also said additional charges may still be brought against Combs, or new defendants.

The court appearance, which Combs was present for, comes after the former music mogul raised issues about his right to a fair trial. Combs accused federal agents on Wednesday of unfairly leaking damaging information about him and his indictment to the press, which could taint a jury pool and impede his right to a fair trial.

“[The leaks] have led to damaging, highly prejudicial pretrial publicity that can only taint the jury pool and deprive Mr. Combs of his right to a fair trial,” the defense said in a court filing.

The judge on Thursday said that he would issue a court order that restricts what both sides are allowed to say publicly about the case. Combs is currently being held without bail.”

  10. “‘Good girl and true hero’ – dog saves owner by leading US officer to her home – Gita, 13, sat down in middle of road in Washington state after owner hurt his leg, fell and couldn’t get up”

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “A dog saved her owner – who hurt his leg at home in rural Washington state, fell and couldn’t get up for hours – by walking to a road, sitting in the middle of it until a local sheriff’s deputy stopped, and leading the officer to him, according to authorities.

Gita’s ability to be “a good girl and true hero” in her 84-year-old owner’s moment of need after his injury at their cabin on 25 September led to her “saving his life that day,” the Stevens county sheriff’s office said in a statement. “The loyalty and heroism of our furry friends never cease to amaze us,” the agency added.

Gita, 13, had sat down in the middle of a road when a Stevens county deputy first encountered her. The deputy tried to get the dog into his patrol cruiser so he could then look for her owner, but she wouldn’t get in. The deputy subsequently left the dog where she was and checked homes within a mile of the area, but he could not find her owner, the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office said the deputy feared something was wrong, so he went back to the dog – and found her lying down on the centerline of the road.

Gita at that point took off up a lightly traveled, unmarked path nearby when the deputy tried to get her off the roadway and away from potentially being hit by a motorist, the sheriff’s office said. The deputy followed Gita, who eventually led him to a small summer cabin.

The deputy soon heard an elderly man’s voice call out for help while on the ground a short distance from the cabin, according to the sheriff’s office. The man had medical conditions that required certain medications that he had not been able to take after falling and hurting his leg several hours earlier.

“He … may have had serious consequences if he had not been found,” the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office didn’t say how Gita’s owner may have been treated or where he may have been taken. But the agency described Gita as a “rescue dog and best friend of the gentleman in trouble,” and it explicitly credited her for “saving his life that day.”

Tales of dogs who get their owners life-saving aid from first responders fascinate the public. Gita’s turn in the spotlight came about four months after a dog ran four miles to get help for his owner who crashed his car into a ravine in Oregon. That dog’s owner was ultimately rescued.

And in January, a man who fell through the ice on a frozen lake in Michigan was saved after his dog brought him rescue equipment at the behest of a state police officer who then pulled the creature’s owner to safety.”

The helicopter of the HDMS Esbern Snare frigate was attacked by the Nigerian pirate and his assailants, but instead of jail time he has been granted asylum. (Credit: HDMS Esbern Snare F342 Facebook)

ReMIX News, Thomas Brooke, Last updated: October 11, 2024 11:36

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “A Nigerian pirate who participated in an attack on a Danish frigate is costing Danish taxpayers millions after avoiding jail time and having medical bills for a prosthetic leg paid for by the state.

Lucky Francis, 42, was one of the surviving pirates who attacked a helicopter of the Danish frigate Esbern Snare off the Gulf of Guinea in November 2021. In the shoot-out that followed, Francis was severely injured, resulting in the amputation of one of his legs.

He was brought back to Denmark to face criminal charges, but rather than serving jail time, Francis has now been granted asylum. Francis was held in custody in Denmark for 384 days but was not sentenced to prison after a custodial sentence was waived due to the “special circumstances” of his injuries.

However, Francis then sought half a million kroner (€67,000) in compensation for his time in custody — despite the fact he was still found guilty of endangering Danish soldiers. The Copenhagen City Court rejected his compensation demand last month, agreeing with prosecutors that he alone was responsible for his detention.

Despite his criminal record and participation in the attack, Francis applied for asylum in Denmark and was granted residency. He has since been enrolled in language programs and is receiving assistance in finding work, all at the expense of Danish taxpayers. According to local reports, Francis’s case has already cost Denmark around 4.2 million kroner (€563,000), covering his medical treatment, legal processes, and integration efforts.

Mikkel Bjørn, the integration spokesman for the Danish People’s Party, called the situation “absurd,” stating, “That man should never have been in Denmark, and to imagine that he can now be meaningfully integrated in Denmark is completely beyond the pale.”

Last year, the Nigerian told local media ahead of his asylum request, “‘Going back to Africa will not be good for me. I have thought about my situation.”

  14. “Devils Prey On Angels”

    T.L. Davis, Oct 05, 2024

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “The government, especially the federal government, is a bully. Their bluff and bluster is an illusion that only works on the peaceful and law-abiding, who are inclined to do the reasonable thing and would do so in the absence of any government at all. This while they cozy up to the law breakers, the cheaters, the pedophiles and scammers. It isn’t hard to see that they are on the side of criminals, having much more in common with them than the peaceful, patriotic citizens they govern.

That is the key, though, isn’t it? They don’t have to govern the peaceful, they govern themselves, behave themselves. The worst the civilized people might do is poach a deer or exceed the speed limit, knowing the consequences of it and ready to suffer them. It’s the thrill of disobedience that makes them feel more alive, almost free until the blue and red lights reflect in their mirror.

That is, until they witness for themselves the hostility of their own government, the heartlessness of it, the outright contempt their paid servants exhibit. It gets worse as they watch, stunned, shamed by their actions. they see their fellow citizens martyred in the most horrific ways, stranded on rooftops, children wandering aimless crying out for missing parents, with all rescue flights grounded, as if to starve and dehydrate them out of existence.

Rumors suggest the government wants them dead, to confiscate the land for lithium that abounds there and pure crystal; things needed for battery and chip manufacturing; things that help satisfy their zero-emission narratives required to enslave the people in a power-starved future. Are they really that evil, their neighbors, their teachers, their fellow citizens?

The answer is in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee, where they’ve exposed their hatreds and made unwilling martyrs of one’s neighbors, friends and family members; treated them like debris to be bulldozed out of the way, with troops frozen on the ground, helicopters sitting idle and those who seek to help threatened and their supplies stolen. For what purpose, other than to deny life-saving supplies to the stranded? This is the level of hatred they have for those not willing to accept their version of “democracy” which is spelled “communism.”

FEMA threatens with force they don’t have, citing laws that don’t exist. It’s hollow bluff and bluster to be pushed aside, scoffed at and ridiculed. They can wrap themselves in their communist rags and preach their power and superiority to the people, but those words are hollow and meaningless to a people determined to do the right thing, the honorable thing.

Fascism is the government working with corporations to rule over the people. In this case, they have done the unforgiveable, importing slave labor at slave labor prices bolstered by FEMA funds, welfare, while taking American jobs, something noticeable in the rising job market and decline of unemployment, figures derived from mythical unemployed and illegal immigrants filling the spots denied to Americans.

Are they now stealing lands to further the aims of their corporate conspirators? Only God and direct observers know for sure. That it would not be an aberration is the unforgiveable sin.

What I mean by “unforgiveable” is a lasting, indelible disdain for them derived from actions so heinous that it exceeds the ability of a moral people to forgive, especially in understanding that they have no remorse for their acts, but in absence of consequences actually celebrate them.

If, as Trump says, the act of allowing millions of security threats into our nation unvetted and unrestrained is unforgiveable on the part of Kamala Harris, is not that also attendant on those who manipulate the deaths of thousands of North Carolinians and Tennesseans for their own purpose or as a lever to get greater funding equally unforgiveable?

It is, it’s worse, it’s displacement for the sake of political gain, it’s terrorism at its most basic understanding. That they use a natural (or unnatural) disaster as their cudgel does not lessen their sin, or spoil righteous retaliation.

Those bodies floating down the river are the martyrs of the war being waged against American citizens. One does not have to blame the hurricane, because the response is the unforgiveable crime, not the catalyst. That it was prepared for within secret meetings and briefs, makes it all the more heinous. It’s the pre-meditated non-response to it that reveals the true evil among them.

They are not citizens of the United States, they have already given up their allegiance to that in seeking a stolen election, a coup against the people, silencing their voices by creating fake voices to fill the void. This is the purpose of that fraud, to rule without consequence, to treat the mild citizen with every degradation that such fraud makes possible.

Who is to blame for righting a wrong; from engaging the enemies who have declared their hatred for the United States in its constitutional form? Isn’t that what patriotism is; standing for what is right against a government that has turned against the people? A government that has been taken over by those of a different and hostile ideology? At a minimum, they are to be dismissed, shrugged off.

Confiscation is theft, confiscation of needed, life-saving supplies is terrorism. These are the actions of HAMAS, of the Taliban, of Al Qaeda, all terrorist organizations. Is the effect any different when it’s our government rather than the government of Palestine, Afghanistan or Iraq?

These are serious questions that will be answered, if not now in North Carolina, perhaps later, but this fake government, one without allegiance to the people, or the states, will continue to present this question over and over until they get a response. What they have done many times is unforgiveable, never to be forgiven, for it is so diabolical that it is impossible to rehabilitate such creatures.

To understand the depths of the hostility to American freedom, one can count the many such Alamos in their brief, but deadly history; Ruby Ridge, Waco, Fast and Furious, Bundy Ranch, Maui and now Asheville. At all but North Carolina, there was an effort, however grudgingly, to pick up the deceased. Now, they don’t even have the decency to make that effort.”

  15. Just The News: “Former President Donald Trump on Friday will announce “Operation Aurora,” his detailed plan for deporting members of an illegal immigrant members of a notorious Venezuelan gang.

The name appears to reference Aurora, Colo., which made headlines earlier this year after a Venezuelan gang took over several apartment complexes in the city. Trump is set to speak in the city on Friday.

“Today, in Aurora, Colorado, President Trump will be announcing ‘OPERATION AURORA’ at the federal level to remove illegal migrant members of the very dangerous transnational Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, or ‘TDA.’” a senior Trump campaign official told Just the News.

“This gang member removal program will invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to target and dismantle every illegal migrant criminal network operating on American soil,” the official continued. “Last month men armed with rifles and handguns were caught on camera as they forced their way into an apartment in Aurora, CO, and threatened the tenant at gunpoint. 10 minutes later, they opened fire on a 25-year-old man outside the building, fatally shooting him. Of the three identified barbaric thugs, ALL THREE are illegal aliens who were in Border Patrol custody but RELEASED into the U.S. by Kamala Harris.”

“In Houston last June, 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray was kidnapped, tied up, and assaulted for two hours under a bridge before she was murdered by two Venezuelan TDA gang members who Kamala Harris had ordered released into the United States,” the official added. “And just this week, police arrested over a dozen members of TDA who had taken over yet another apartment complex in San Antonio and terrorized its residents.”

“According to newly published data from ICE, there are now 13,099 illegal alien CONVICTED MURDERERS at large in the United States under Border Czar Kamala Harris,” the official concluded.”

    1. We hit 80 today – hazy skies with the smoke, tho. The lope vines are withering, including the vine with the one remaining lope, so I cut it and brought it inside to ripen. Last for the year!

  16. I am adding a short daily prayer to the board. I would invite each of you, if you wish, to also add one or maybe two of your own liking. I do not want to stifle anyone but please limit yourself to one or two religious postings. here’s one I found that I liked.
