Real Haunted Houses in America: Part 1

I found an All That’s Interesting article on real haunted houses in America, nine in total, and I’ve broken the list in several parts.

From All That’s Interesting:

There are many haunted houses in the United States, but there are only a few genuine contenders for the title of the most haunted house in America. Some of them were the site of a gruesome crime scene. Others seem to draw spirits for different reasons.

Paranormal investigators say that homes hold on to the accumulated energy of everyone who has previously lived there or that tragedy and sadness can cause a spirit to linger, hoping to correct the pains of the past before they move on.

Some ghost hunters even say that a house can be haunted by a spirit that is happy to live amongst their former home’s new inhabitants, like the case of the Pittock Mansion’s “friendly” ghosts. Other ghosts, however, not so much. They don’t pull any punches when it comes to making it known that they’d prefer to have the place all to themselves.

But one way or another, the ghosts in these houses make themselves known. Read about the nine hauntings in homes below, and decide for yourself what is the most haunted house in America.

1 ‘The Conjuring’ House

In the 2013 film The Conjuring, a character declares: “There’s something horrible happening in my house.” Though the film is fiction, it’s based on a real story — and a real American haunted house in Rhode Island. The house, a 14-room farmhouse in Harrisville, belonged to the same family for eight generations. They suffered numerous strange tragedies during that time, including the deaths of children by suicides, drownings, and murder.

But the most infamous murder on the property was committed by a woman named Bathsheba Sherman. Local lore claimed that Sherman was a witch and killed a baby by sticking a sewing needle into his brain. After her death, she — and other spirits — were thought to have stuck around the house.  As depicted in The Conjuring, the Perron family moved to the house in 1971 and immediately began experiencing strange things. Carolyn Perron, the matriarch, first noticed objects missing and piles of dirt that appeared on the floor after she’d cleaned. Things only escalated from there.

The family’s beds shook every morning at 5:15 a.m., they smelled rotting flesh, and unexplainable noises kept everyone on edge. Once, Carolyn Perron felt a sharp pain in her leg and discovered a puncture wound — just like a needle would make.  As in The Conjuring, the family eventually enlist the help of Ed and Lorraine Warren, a demonologist and a clairvoyant. The real-life Warrens confirmed that there were spirits in the house, but said they failed to entirely exorcise them.

“We have a respect for the spirits. We lived with them. It was their house first,” said Andrea Perron, one of the family’s daughters. She claims that almost everything in the movie really happened — and, in fact, the movie didn’t even tell the whole story.  Although the Perron family left the house in 1980, another family soon moved in to the Conjuring House. They, too, have had a few brushes with the supernatural, admitting: “We’ve had a few moments in here that have made us jump a bit.”

2 The Winchester House

Normally, haunted houses are regular homes that become haunted. But the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, is an American haunted house built specifically as a haven from — and for — spirits.  The idea for the house came from a New England woman named Sarah Winchester. A wealthy widow, she’d once been married to William Winchester, whose family produced Winchester rifles. When William died a premature death from tuberculosis in 1881, Sarah sought the help of a spiritual medium.

The medium told her the family was cursed, haunted by the spirits of people killed by the company’s guns. The only way to appease these ghosts and avoid becoming their next victim, the medium said, was to build a great house for them out west. And as long as construction never stopped, she would be safe. So, Sarah got to work. For her, money was no object. She’d inherited hundreds of millions of dollars from her husband, and thousands more poured in every day from Winchester Arms. Indeed, she couldn’t spend it fast enough — but not for lack of trying.

Sarah Winchester threw money at the house she wanted to build. As a result, the Winchester House began to grow and grow. However, her house didn’t make much objective sense. Without a concrete plan, construction advanced haphazardly — this way, then that, a staircase here, a door to nowhere there. And as the house grew, so did its legend.

A February 1895 article in The San Francisco Chronicle claimed that Sarah kept building the house to avoid death. Others say the confusing layout was meant to confound the spirits that haunted her. “The sound of the hammer is never hushed,” the article said. “The reason for it is in Mrs. Winchester’s belief that when the house is entirely finished, she will die.”

Sarah Winchester did die in 1922, after working on the house for 38 years. Today, it’s a maze of abruptly ending hallways, floors with windows, and stairways that ascend into the ceiling.  Many claim the place to be extremely haunted. Guests and employees of the Winchester Mystery House — now a popular tourist attraction — claim to have seen strange shadows, felt a mysterious tug, and heard unexplainable footsteps.

    1. Morning, Pat! Still dark so I can’t see the sky yet, temp @ 56. No Wheezer this morning yet but most of the food in his dish is gone. Aaaaand as soon as I type that, here’s Wheezer, tucking into his tuna….LOL

        1. LOL – not quite….he lurks nearby – however, it appears that he only does that when the food dish is almost empty. I’m guessing that if it’s stocked up, he wants to be nearby to protect it, securing his next meal. When it’s almost empty, he’s hedging his bets: close enough to see when the light comes on = tuna, while also being in a position to catch some prey if it happens by. Feral cats have an entirely different mindset than house cats.

    2. I know you can’t watch videos but some @ W’s might find this interesting….it’s way past my ability to figure out….my friend, Patty, in MD forwarded this to me. A LOT of blue circles and yet bare spots off-and-on in the storm path…..

“Hurricane Helene and Frequency Transmissions—“…blue circles seen on the map are frequency transmissions from the NeXRAd network of transmitters @DA installations. All available science makes clear that atmospheric frequency transmissions can and do have a repelling effect on air masses, especially if and when the air masses have been seeded with electrically conductive nanoparticles….the brighter blue flash from a @DA frequency transmission, the more pronounced and powerful the repelling effect on any air mass or storm in the vicinity will be. Where there are no blue flashes, there is no transmission, thus no repelling effect, thus no resistance for a migrating storm. A migrating storm will be hindered from moving toward frequency transmissions @DA and will easily migrate in a direction w/no @DA transmissions…..So, again I ask: was Hurricane Helene’s @path and behavior just an act of nature or was it @DA engineered? You decide but take a look at…..”

              1. did you read about the reason they do not want others to deliver food and supplies to the disaster zones?
because FEMA has a list of “approved” vendors to receive supplies from–like water, food, blankets. if the public gives to each other, it bypasses the vendors. if the vendors don’t get to send goods, they don’t get their HUGE reimbursements from the gov’t and the gov’t doesn’t get their kickbacks.

  1. Just The News: “Federal prosecutors on Wednesday requested the trial of former President Donald Trump’s suspected shooter Ryan Wesley Routh be indefinitely delayed, because of a massive amount of evidence they’ve uncovered in the past two weeks.

Routh allegedly attempted to assassinate Trump last month at his resort in Florida, but the plot was foiled by Secret Service agents. Routh has been charged with attempted assassination, possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, and assaulting a federal officer. He has pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutors argued in a court filing on Wednesday that new details in the case have emerged, which have resulted in more than 100 outstanding subpoena returns, thousands of videos to review, and the seizure of multiple electronic devices.

“Over the past two weeks, the United States has interviewed hundreds of witnesses,” prosecutors said in the filing, per ABC News. “It has also executed 13 search warrants in Florida, Hawaii, and North Carolina, and seized hundreds of items of evidence, including multiple electronic devices.”

The investigation is including a look into Routh’s actions leading up to the assassination attempt to gain insight into the alleged attack. Prosecutors said that the FBI is also still conducting forensic tests on other evidence, such as “ballistics testing, and fingerprint and DNA comparisons.”

Defense attorneys for Routh did not object to the indefinite delay, according to the filing.”

      1. I always thought they were pushing it – this is MUCH quicker than even the simplest non-controversial investigation, IMO. There is no way in hell they could have gathered ALL of the critical pertinent info in this timeframe. Put him on ice and sus out all the people along his trail….TBH, I’d prefer a Trump admin conduct that investigation!

Just was informed by a person in the water service industry that a supply company willing to donate pipe for repairs, to expedite city/county water being restored– WAS TOLD NO by federal agencies (assuming it was FEMA) on the ground. It’s not just the damage and fatalities we are facing, we are literally fighting the feds for survival in Western NC. Sure would be nice if we had a governor that would fight for the citizens, instead of only showing up for photo ops.

  4. Just The News: “Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., along with seven other Democratic members of the House, demanded that eight social media companies censor election misinformation and disinformation going into the November election.

Schiff announced on Tuesday that the letter was sent to the chief executive officers of Google, Instagram, Meta, Microsoft, Snap Inc., TikTok, X, and YouTube.

“We write to your platforms as concerned Members of Congress, seeking further information about your preparation for and response to the spread of misinformation and disinformation, or the potential incitement of violence on your platforms leading up to the 2024 elections,” the letter begins.

“We have already seen how posts with disinformation have spread on the major social media platforms both in the United States and across the globe during election cycles. We continue to be concerned with each of your companies’ ability to react efficiently and effectively to misinformation and disinformation, or to any potential incitement of violence occurring on your platforms.”

“Unfortunately, we have witnessed almost every major platform roll back their election policies, even in the face of blatant attacks on our democracy fomenting,” the lawmakers added. “This almost universal reversion on the issue of combating election mis- and disinformation is incredibly troubling.”

The lawmakers gave examples of the social media companies allowing misinformation and disinformation on their platforms, including allowing former President Donald Trump back on his accounts.

“Without proper incentives, bad actors will continue to spread false content they know to be divisive,” the House Democrats explained. “Instead of properly evaluating the risk of election interference or political violence, companies have allowed this content to flourish.

“YouTube made a decision to resume videos that deny the 2020 election, undoing their prior commitment to election integrity. Meta similarly resumed allowing political ads that claim stolen elections,” they continued. “And almost every major social media company reinstated Donald Trump’s account after previously banning him for violating their community standards. After witnessing the role that false or misleading content can play in our elections, we know our country cannot afford to have platforms backslide on their promises.”

The lawmakers asked the social media companies a series of questions on handling election misinformation, including whether they will be changing their “election integrity policies between now and the 2024 U.S. general election?”

Democratic Reps. Julia Brownley, Calif.; André Carson, Ind.; Robert Garcia, Calif.; Dan Goldman, N.Y.; Raúl M. Grijalva, Ariz.; Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr., Ga.; and Doris Matsui, Calif.; signed the letter with Schiff.”

  5. NF: Huh – I’ve had a little spark going off in the back of my head about Vance, too, but I’m kinda surprised that BB would feel it too. He does tend to come off as the “eternal optimist.” I remind myself that something that looks too good to be true, generally isn’t…..

    https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4912085-trump-praises-vance-debate-performance/

Our Take: We didn’t become Anons by greedily gulping down propaganda.

In the wake of a VP Debate that most believe JD Vance won in a landslide, I was somewhat surprised to see a fair bit of capitulation to that very point within the Media Industrial Complex, while it’s similarly notable that a man many of us refer to as the signal within the noise even more strongly threw his support behind the man he picked to appear on the ticket and in the story with him ahead of the November 5 inflection point.

I think taking a Bicameral approach to these narrative patterns avails us well.

We don’t have to trust Vance just because he’s being thrust into the spotlight at this point in time, especially when he enjoys the support of the Con Inc. doom brigade; that said, his presence in the race seems to be sending the traditional media vultures into a tailspin, unsure which way is up.

As always, this sort of narrative chaos tends to behoove the Infinite Player on the game board. And that’s usually Trump. — Burning Bright

When will our rulers understand that we just can’t afford it anymore? Yet another feature of our flawed immigration system that is exploited. FTA:

“At 1 p.m. on certain Saturday afternoons, hundreds of foreign-born professionals from all over the US converge on a small city in central Pennsylvania. They assemble in a high-rise office building, where they sit through four hours of college classes. Then they return to the airport and head home.
What’s drawing these students to Harrisburg University of Science and Technology is not the prospect of landing a good job. A majority already have one. Nor is it the prestige of a Harrisburg degree. If they’re lucky, they won’t ever graduate.
Instead, for most, it’s an elaborate charade to stay in the country legally…”

  11. “We Must Restore our Unalienable Rights”

    Clandestine, Oct 03, 2024

“Our Founding Fathers had the foresight to know this day would come.

“Whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and institute a new government.”

    Jefferson’s words ring true today.

Our government has become destructive to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Therefore, it is not only our Right, but our RESPONSIBILITY to uproot the corrupt establishment, and rebuild a new system in its place.

This nation is in desperate need of a fresh start. Our ruling class needs a deep and thorough cleansing. All of our institutions are infected. Evil runs rampant. Unprecedented change may be necessary.

We the People have selected Donald Trump to be our champion, to carry out this task through peaceful means, and when he wins, he and his administration must do what is necessary to restore our unalienable Rights, and build a foundation for the future, with new principles, focused on the Safety and Happiness of the AMERICAN People.

The Swamp must be drained if humanity is to prosper. Donald Trump must win, and he must burn down this diseased and corrupt temple, otherwise the cycle will continue, and humanity will continue to perish.”

    1. Them: I can’t post this online because it’s not quite public yet, but government officials had a town meeting with all of the residents of chimney rock and basically told them the town was being bulldozed, bodies and all and the land was being seized by the federal government they would not be able to move back and basically their homes the ones that were standing were no longer theirs and the federal government owned it all. I don’t know what crazy play for land this is, but there’s a lot of conspiracy about lithium mines and let me just tell you, as someone who lives in Charlotte and has friends who live in the area of Western North Carolina, they are not being helped and this is actually being a stand down operation by federal government

Me: What the heck…? That’s quite disturbing. Is this first-hand, second-hand, or more distant info?

Them: Our friend owns an Airbnb in Chimney Rock. They had a town meeting yesterday and someone from the federal government told them all of those things in the town meeting, but doesn’t want the information getting out. Also, they are not picking up the bodies. The stench of the bodies everywhere is insane and for some reason, the government does not want to pick up the bodies. One pastor of a local church was going to order to door delivering water and they changed their delivery request to body bags because so many of the homes that they’ve gone to have needed body bags, we’re trying to keep the body count. They’re not picking up the bodies. They don’t wanna identify the bodies and they’re just leaving them to rot in the streets.

Me: I…can’t…even. I’m stunned. This is beyond anything I could have imagined even very recently. You always pick up and bury the dead. It’s what humans do. They are violating every possible custom … on purpose. Thank you for keeping me informed. People need to know about this. Let me know when you’d be comfortable with me posting to our forums in an anonymized fashion, of course.

Them: You can post it the message needs to get out. Something evil is going on in the NC mountains. I just didn’t want to be identified. Just today we filled up a trailer for a shelter in Hendersonville NC that had no food for tons of moms and babies. All the stores round are empty or locked. In Chandler NC 2000 people haven’t eaten anything or drank in 6 days and just got an SOS message out for help. I’m trying to tag the Cajun navy and operation airdrop but people are dying by the minute.

Multiple tuckers have reported having tires slashed. Our friends from Chimney Rock said they have heard multiple stories of people being robbed at gunpoint making supply runs. Two people that drove down to Charlotte yesterday and today one that we helped said bodies in trees, all over ditches in major roads back. Something weird is going on here in NC.

Me: God bless you. Let me know if I can help.

Them: Someone with a large national megaphone needs to amplify how bad it is. People are now starting to die trapped. My town is Operation Air Drop NC central command. They need pilots with planes and now are asking just for trucks. People with big equipment are needed but more than anything the nation needs to put pressure on Washington to deploy the National Guard asap. The 82nd was begging to go since Saturday but has been told to stand down. Every fucking Apache we have should be flying rescue missions. Please amplify the message!!!

  14. EXCERPT: “Harold Daggett — the union boss who has vowed to “cripple” the US economy if ports don’t ban automation and raise dockworkers’ wages sharply — had a Bentley convertible parked outside his sprawling mansion in New Jersey this week, exclusive photos obtained by The Post reveal.

Photos taken by drone on Tuesday show the British luxury car parked with its top up outside what appears to be a five-car garage that’s connected to his 7,136-square-foot, Tudor-style home by a covered skyway.

The hulking, two-story mansion — located on a 10-acre property in Sparta, a leafy enclave 50 miles west of New York City — encircles a spacious backyard patio with an amoeba-shaped pool.

A covered outdoor bar is situated next to what appears to be a massive brick pizza oven. A gate on the far side of the patio opens toward what looks like a free-standing sauna surrounded by a spacious wooden deck. A expansive swath of forest surrounds the property on all sides.

The posh compound is nestled in a picturesque section of the Garden State near the Delaware Water Gap, where five-bedroom homes list for as much as $6 million, according to Zillow.

One realtor who spoke to The Post said Daggett put the four-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bathroom property on the market in 2004 at a listing price of $3.1 million before reducing it to $2.9 million. He eventually took it off the market.

Daggett, who fought back federal accusations of having Mafia ties, became president of the International Longshoremen’s Association in 2011, a job that comes with a salary of $728,000 annually on top of an additional $173,000 from ILA-Local 1804-1.

In 2005, he was accused of steering union benefits contracts to firms that paid kickbacks to organized crime at a Brooklyn trial, the Wall Street Journal reported….”
