15 Animals Who Are Probably Smarter Than You: Part 2

Continuing from Reader’s Digest:

Chickens know shapes and colors

Although chickens can sometimes have an unintelligent rap, they are actually very smart. In fact, they can even differentiate certain shapes and colors. According to Melissa Caughey, author of How to Speak Chicken and A Kid’s Guide to Keeping Chickens, “Clicker trained to peck at one of four different shapes, such as a circle, square, triangle, and rectangle, chickens in one study could always pick their shape out of the grouping, no matter how the shapes were arranged. When their particular shape was removed, the chickens looked quizzically for it and wouldn’t peck at the other shapes. When the correct shape was reintroduced, they pecked at it as taught.”

 Rats solve puzzles

You might not think of rats as the smartest animals, since humans are continually using them for experiments. But did you consider that the reason we use them is because they’re smart, and can handle the puzzles we throw at them? They can memorize routes (hence, the mazes), even though their eyesight is far, far less acute than ours is. And their problem-solving skills are on par with those of dogs, despite their brains being much smaller. Equally impressive, a Harvard Business Review study found that “even though the rat brain is smaller and less complex than the human brain, research has shown that the two are remarkably similar in structure and function.”

Pigeons can memorize images

Here’s another of the smartest animals that you probably have the exact opposite impression of. Pigeons, despite their comically “clumsy” walking style and seemingly vacant stares, are not as “bird-brained” as you might think! In a complex German study, pigeons were shown 725 random black-and-white images one at a time. They were able to differentiate between the images in an identification game that, according to Psychology Today, would give most humans trouble. We’re not saying that the next time you shoo a pigeon, it’ll remember your face for all eternity, but you might want to be careful just in case!

African Greys are as smart as a three-year-old

Besides being able to mimic humans, parrots can solve puzzles based on logical reasoning. According to Live Science, these parrots are as smart as a three-year-old child. “Parrots can draw conclusions about where to find a food reward not only from clues as to its location, but also from the absence of clues—an ability previously only seen in humans and other apes . . . ‘It suggests that Grey parrots have some understanding of causality and that they can use this to reason about the world,’ study scientist Christian Schloegl, a researcher at the University of Vienna, told LiveScience.”

Portia spiders use trial-and-error

What the heck is this thing?! Well, it’s a genus of spider whose undeniable intelligence is about to turn up the dial on your arachnophobia. (Luckily, they pose no danger to humans!) There are multiple species of Portia, native to Southeast Asia, parts of Africa, and northeastern Australia. And their hunting tactics show clear evidence of problem-solving abilities—if one technique doesn’t work, they’ll give something else a try, altering their method if something works on one species of prey spider and not another. They’ve earned the nickname “eight-legged cats” because of their skillful, intelligence-driven hunting. Sometimes they’ll take hours upon hours to stalk a single prey spider, perching on its web and moving so slowly that they don’t cause any reverberations that might clue their prey in.

Dogs are as smart as toddlers

There’s a reason dogs are man’s best friend. Not only are they adorable, they’re also crazy smart. They have emotions, they learn tricks, they recognize their owners, they can sense others’ feelings—and that’s not even all of the clever things dogs can do. According to Live Science, they’re as smart as a two-year-old child. “The finding is based on a language development test, revealing average dogs can learn 165 words (similar to a two-year-old child), including signals and gestures, and dogs in the top 20 percent in intelligence can learn 250 words,” says the Live Science article. “While dogs ranked with the two-year-olds in language, they would trump a three- or four-year-old in basic arithmetic, [Stanley Coren, a canine expert and professor emeritus at the University of British Columbia] found. In terms of social smarts, our drooling furballs fare even better.”

Chimpanzees are very similar to humans

Unsurprisingly, chimpanzees are one of the most intelligent animals on this planet—next to humans, of course. Similar to how humans inherit their intelligence from their mother, a chimpanzee’s intelligence also greatly relies on their genes. “They can learn words, play with objects, and even seem to mourn the deaths of their friends,” says National Geographic. “Genes determine about half of the variability in chimp intelligence and environmental factors the other half, according to primatologist William Hopkins, of the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and colleagues.” Chimps also have their own way of making life a little easier. “Chimps are known to make and use tools for simple tasks like opening fruits and nuts. In fact, studies have shown some of these primates to fashion spears to hunt smaller prey and long branches to dig for termites,” according to Caleb Backe, health and wellness expert for Maple Holistics.

    1. Morning, Pat! 52 this morning and clear skies – supposed to hit the mid-80’s again today but tomorrow the high is predicted in the 60’s. Guess you’ll have to make your own sunshine! The usual with Wheezer, altho he was back to sleeping in the chair this morning – ate his tuna and departed.

      1. Morning Filly!
watching bizarre stuff this morning. a young deer–old enough to not have spots anymore and almost as tall as the mom trying to get underneath mom to feed. mom allowed it for a minute then tried to back away. eventually she cuffed the young one and walked away. weird.
and i am doing the usual Monday morning laundry and i took the first load upstairs to put away. since is still gray and cloudy but light enough now I can see where something has completely knocked down the front fence around the grapevines. sigh…i was gonna remove it next year anyway, but still.

        1. Why is that bizarre? Isn’t that fairly normal? I’ve seen it in horses and cattle as well as wild cats and other animals. I’m sure the fence being down doesn’t really surprise you. You do laundry once a week, I do it once a month….if that! LOL

            2. It isn’t common, no, but it happens occasionally that youngsters get lazy or want a little cream to season that grass; usually, it’s because something scared them and they want the comfort of nursing. You’re right – 99% of the time the Mama won’t put up with it at all.

Is the idea that Project 2025 was a setup to hurt Trump? Is it that the Heritage Foundation is setting traps for Trump? I thought Trump used their research to vet people.

I don’t know if it’s a situation where there are good people there who support MAGA, but there are others undermining it while appearing to support it.

  3. “Matt Taibbi Delivers the Quintessential American Speech at ‘Rescue the Republic’ Event in D.C.”

Red State, By Susie Moore | 9:40 PM on September 29, 2024

    Screenshot via YouTube

EXCERPT: “If anyone had told me a couple of years ago that I’d be singing the praises of Matt Taibbi, I’d have told them they were high. I wasn’t particularly familiar with Taibbi — just knew he’d been a writer for Rolling Stone and had written some things I found obnoxious. I also knew our politics were miles apart.

And then the Twitter Files happened. When Taibbi first broke the Twitter Files story in December of 2022, I started paying closer attention to him. Because differ though our views might, I recognized he was someone who, like me, firmly believes in the freedom of speech, and he seemed willing to stick his neck out in defense of it at a time when many seemed cowed. I began listening to his “America This Week” podcast, and it soon became part of my regular Saturday morning routine.

Over time, I’ve found myself agreeing with Taibbi and his co-host Walter Kirn more often than not. We may not share the exact same politics, but we share a whole lot of the same values. I’ve also come to appreciate Taibbi’s earnest belief in America’s foundational principles and his almost endearing disbelief at the current state of his chosen profession.

On Sunday, Taibbi was one of numerous featured speakers at a “Rescue the Republic” event held in Washington, D.C. Other speakers included Bret Weinstein, Jordan Peterson, Tulsi Gabbard, Robert Malone, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Russell Brand, Lara Logan, the aforementioned Walter Kirn, and many others.

I expected I’d enjoy Taibbi’s speech. I didn’t expect to love it. But I did. I absolutely, unabashedly did.

I’m only going to provide a brief excerpt of it here, but I highly encourage you to watch it in its entirety. (The video below is cued up to the beginning of Taibbi’s speech. Fair warning: There’s some salty language toward the end.)”…..

    https://redstate.com/smoosieq/2024/09/29/matt-taibbi-delivers-an-absolute-work-of-art-in-defense-of-free-speech-at-rescue-the-republic-event-n2179934

Because “freedom of speech” is now frequently described as a stalking horse for hate and discrimination — the UN High Commissioner Volker Türk scolded Elon Musk that “free speech is not a free pass” — it’s becoming one of those soon-to-be-extinct terms. Speech is mentioned in “reputable” media only as a possible vector for the informational disease known as misinformation.

The end game is not controlling speech. They’re already doing that. The endgame is getting us to forget we ever had anything to say.

After that I realized every American has a little bit of a**hole in him. William Blake said, “Always be ready to speak your mind and a base man will avoid you.” Some struggle with this concept. Americans are born knowing it.

Incidentally propaganda is the same trick I saw in that restaurant. It’s always someone trying to make you feel bad for their weakness, their mistakes. Don’t be ground down by it. Stand up straight and give it back.

Which is why I say: Kerry, Hayden, Cheney, Adam Schiff, Craig Newmark, Reid Hoffman, Pierre Omidyar, Leon Panetta, and especially that Time editor turned self-appointed censor Rick Stengel should be packed in a rocket and launched into the f***ing sun.

Let’s be clear about our language. Madison famously eschewed the word toleration or tolerance when it came to religion and insisted on the words freedom or liberty instead. This became the basis for the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which in turn became the basis for the Bill of Rights. That’s why we don’t have “toleration of religion” or “toleration of speech.” We have freedom of speech. The right word for the right time.

To the people who are suggesting that there are voices who should be ignored because they’re encouraging mistrust or skepticism of authority, or obstructing consensus: I’m not encouraging you to be skeptical of authority. I’m encouraging you to DEFY authority. That is the right word for the this time.

To all those Snoops and Nosey Parkers sitting in their Homeland Security-funded “Centers of Excellence,” telling us day after day we must think as they say and vote as they say or else we’re traitorous Putin-loving fascists and enablers of “dangerous” disinformation:

Motherf***er, I’m an American. That s**t does not work on me. And how can you impugn my patriotism, when you’re sitting in Klaus Schwab’s lap, apologizing for the First Amendment to a crowd of Europeans? Look in the mirror.

I’m not the problem. We’re not the problem.

    You’re the problem.

    YOU SUCK.

    Thank you.

In this speech, Taibbi hit all the right notes, with a nod to our history, the history of free speech, the Gospel of John and the power of words — and the Word. He captured the spirit of what it means to be quintessentially American — to be free.”

  4. Oh, shit! The only somewhat rural county in that District is Culpepper. The rest are mostly liberal. Not that Spanberger is much better but she’s a known entity at least, w/o the Ukraine connection.

EXCERPT: “Democratic House candidate Eugene Vindman has disbursed millions of dollars to a Bernie Sanders-linked strategy group that works with “progressive campaigns” while running on a moderate message, emphasizing local issues and the importance of rejecting extremism.

Vindman is the brother of Alexander Vindman, the star witness in the first impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump. He is currently the Democratic nominee to represent Virginia’s 7th Congressional District, a key battleground for control of the House. Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., currently holds the seat, but has declined to seek reelection in favor of a gubernatorial run in 2025.

Despite campaigning on a centrist narrative, campaign finance records show a close link between the Vindman campaign and Aisle 518, a political strategy firm owned by Tim Tagaris, a former senior advisor to the 2020 Sanders presidential campaign and his 2016 digital fundraising director….”

The fire began at the plant in Conyers, about 32 miles southeast of Atlanta, at 5 a.m. on Sunday, according to Fox News, and huge billows of toxic smoke started spreading in the afternoon.

At a press conference Sunday morning, Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel said that a sprinkler head at the plant, which produces pool chemicals, malfunctioned and “caus[ed] a mixture with a water reactive chemical.”

“We are strongly encouraging everyone, no matter where you’re coming from, but especially Rockdale residents, to stay out of this area for the safety of yourself, and for the safety of all personnel that are out here already that have to work this type of incident,” Rockdale County officials advised.”

  6. Just The News: “Department of Veterans Affairs employees have illicitly accessed the medical records both major parties’ vice presidential nominees, the agency confirmed to both campaigns. An investigation is ongoing.

At least 12 agency employees have improperly accessed the records of Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, and Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., according the Washington Post. Both men are veterans of the armed services, with Vance serving in the Marines and Walz in the National Guard.

“We take the privacy of the Veterans we serve very seriously and have strict policies in place to protect their records,” VA press secretary Terrence Hayes told the outlet. “Any attempt to improperly access Veteran records by VA personnel is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

The agency has also provided evidence to the Department of Justice, which is weighing charges.

The motives of the employees who viewed the records have not been identified as of press time. The VA has since reiterated to employees that they may only access veteran information as part of their official duties and could face dismissal for violations.

Walz and Vance are slated to participate in the vice presidential debate on Tuesday.”

They haven’t had nearly enough time to trace all of his background and investigate everyone to whom he is connected! IMO, they are trying to rush this to avoid exposing the deeper connections.

  9. Just The News: “The FBI has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit by paying more than $22 million to 34 female recruits alleging they were sexual harassed and dismissed from the agency’s Quantico, Virginia, training facility, according to news reports Monday.

They women allege having been routinely harassed by instructors with sexually charged comments about their breast size, false allegations of infidelity and the need to take contraception “to control their moods,” according to the Associated Press.

The settlement is still subject to approval by a federal judge. But if the payout is approved, it would be among the largest lawsuit settlements in the history of the FBI, the wire service also reports.

“These problems are pervasive within the FBI and the attitudes that created them were learned at the academy,” said David J. Shaffer, the lawyer for the women. “This case will make important major changes in these attitudes.”

The suit was filed in 2019 and also contends the female recruits were judged more harshly than their male peers and “excessively targeted for correction and dismissal in tactical situations for perceived lack of judgment” and subjective “suitability” criteria.

The FBI did not immediately comment on the settlement. However, mny of the allegations in the lawsuit were confirmed in a 2022 internal watchdog report.

In the settlement announced Monday, the FBI would offer the plaintiffs an opportunity to continue training toward becoming agents and “guaranteed placement,” for those who pass, in one of their top three preferred field offices, the Associated Press also reports.

The suit follows sexual misconduct claims against several senior FBI officials, who were identified in an Associated Press investigation and who quietly left the bureau with full benefits even after allegations against them were substantiated.”

Kamala and Sleepy Joe are going out of their way to make it difficult for me to Campaign.

We had one of the biggest crowds I’ve ever seen on Saturday, in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, where a terrible migrant crime was recently committed,

and we ended up having to use a 750 seat theater,

having to send away more than 50,000 people.

They were unable to give us Secret Service protection commensurate with the crowd,

because they had to protect the President of Iran,
who is doing everything possible to kill me,

    at the United Nations event.

We complained “like hell,” but there was nothing we could do….

    Donald J. Trump
    @realDonaldTrump

….I only hope all of those people that were turned away will

blame the Creeps from the Harris-Biden Administration,

    namely, the Opposing Party,
    that did this to them.

    IT WAS A DISGRACE!

The 750 people had a great time, but I’m going to make it back up to those in Wisconsin that were forced by Harris to waste their time.

We will get back up to Wisconsin very soon,
and we’ll get to a venue that can handle all of them, probably an outside area.

If it weren’t for politics, they would have had no problem supplying us with Secret Service Security.

Routh was charged with the attempted assassination last week. He previously faced two federal charges relating to his possession of a firearm while a felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

The Monday arraignment lasted less than five minutes, ABC News reported.

The incident saw Secret Service engage with an armed suspect after an agent noticed the barrel of an AK-47 protruding from the bushes where he was hiding. Trump was playing golf at his Palm Beach course roughly 400-500 yards away.

The suspect fled and Routh was later apprehended by local authorities. He previously wrote a note months prior indicating his intent to kill Trump.”

  12. https://www.theepochtimes.com/us/rudy-giuliani-disbarred-in-washington-over-2020-election-response-5730681?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=ZeroHedge

Rudy Giuliani, the embattled former adviser to former President Donald Trump, has been disbarred in Washington following a disciplinary board’s criticisms of his reactions to the 2020 presidential election.

A three-judge panel on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals ordered Giuliani’s disbarment on Sept. 26. The brief order noted, among other things, Giuliani’s disbarment in the state of New York, where an appeals court similarly accused Giuliani of making “demonstrably false and misleading statements to the courts, lawmakers, and the public at large.”

The case came before Judges Eric T. Washington, Roy McLeese, and Joshua Deahl. In June 2023, the District of Columbia Bar’s Board on Professional Responsibility issued a report stating that Giuliani “claimed massive election fraud but had no evidence of it.”

The board added that while it considered Giuliani’s “conduct following the September 11 attacks as well as his prior service in the Justice Department and as Mayor of New York City,” it said “all of that happened long ago.”

His conduct during the 2020 presidential election “transcends all his past accomplishments,” the board said, adding, “It was unparalleled in its destructive purpose and effect.” — The Epoch Times

Our Take: Giuliani is disbarred in Washington now, even as proof of the truth of his efforts is coming to light. Consider the situation here in Colorado, where establishment Republicans are pretending to be horrified to learn that the machines connect to the internet and enabled for remote access.

Colonel Shawn Smith (USAF-Retired), cyber expert Dennis Haugh (RIP), and I gave a detailed presentation on these technical components to Colorado legislators on April 24, 2021. The presentation included pictures, excerpts from the vendor manuals, cyber threat assessment details, and more. You can read it here.

Local news won awards for lying about election activists, put us on lists, and called us terrorists. We lost jobs, received dozens of threats of personal harm, lost two and a half years to frivolous lawfare— then won definitively via direct verdict.

Establishment republicans ignored all of it, stayed silent when we were defamed and dehumanized. They’ve still said nothing about our historic victory. Now a month before the election, they want people to believe they totally care about the integrity, accuracy, and legality of our elections — and they’re calling remote access to voting machines a “breaking” development.

It is damn near impossible to convince me that this is anything other than a divisive narrative deployment, especially considering that Giuliani just lost his law license for saying it back when fighting it could have made a difference in future elections.

Back then, these same establishment shills were silent. I’m glad new people are talking about election vulnerabilities. I’m highly skeptical of their motives. — Ashe in America

  15. “The entire Biden-Harris Cabinet is missing in action on Hurricane Helene disaster response — Zero Cabinet-level officials are on the ground in the American South.”

    Jordan Schachtel, Sep 30, 2024

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “The death toll for Hurricane Helene has reached over 100, and 600 Americans are unaccounted for, as massive swaths of the American South are reeling from the devastation wrought by the natural disaster. The Dossier has found that not a single Biden-Harris Administration Cabinet official is on the ground in disaster areas, and none have expressed an intention to visit the sites most impacted by the hurricane.

President Biden spent Friday to Sunday at the beach in Delaware, according to his public schedule. On Monday, he was at the White House to celebrate the U.S. Olympic team.

When asked what he’s doing to help with the Helene response, Biden said he “was on the phone for two hours yesterday” while he was in reality just sitting on the beach in Delaware.

Vice President Kamala Harris spent the weekend campaigning and raising money on the West Coast, hosting high-dollar fundraisers and rallies in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas.

After some blowback, her team then released a Veep-like PR photo Monday on X, showcasing Harris on her plane (with unplugged headphones and blank pieces of paper in front of her), cosplaying a leader who is managing the Helene response.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, despite being the senior infrastructure guy in the Cabinet, is once more nowhere to be found. His public schedule has not been updated since mid-August. Instead of focusing on assisting Helene victims, he is reportedly helping Tim Walz with debate prep for the upcoming vice presidential debate on Tuesday evening. Instead of assisting with disaster relief, “Mayor Pete” is in Minnesota with Tim Walz.

DHS chief Alejandro Mayorkas, who presides over FEMA, is also nowhere to be found. When Helene reached American territory, he was in California, hosting an awards ceremony for the U.S. Secret Service. Instead of assisting with disaster relief efforts, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland was in Washington, D.C., Monday to celebrate the Olympic teams at the White House.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is in Italy meeting with the G7 nations, discussing how to impose stringent climate change policies upon humanity. The EPA Administrator spent last week in New York City at an event called Climate Week NYC.

The U.S. Small Business Administrator spent the weekend in Nebraska celebrating Native American tribes.

The FEMA director is the only mildly senior-level Biden-Harris official on the ground in the disaster areas. However, she is largely doing photo ops with state governors and checking boxes.

This is the reality of an administration entirely controlled by the D.C. bureaucracy. With major swaths of the country in desperate need of federal resources, there is nobody to be held accountable for deploying assets to areas of need. The cognitively-impaired president is at the beach. The vice president couldn’t care less. And the rest of their cabinet is busy fulfilling other “duties.”

NEW: Mike Davis is running a $1 million Spanish-language ad campaign in swing states, informing non-citizens that voting in federal elections is a crime that could result in deportation.

“Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin just found 6,000 non-citizens who are illegally registered to vote. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott found 2,000 non-citizens who actually voted illegally in prior elections. So when the media tries to say this isn’t happening, they’re lying to you.”

“They go get a driver’s license, and oftentimes, they are just put on the voter rolls. Then, they get a mail-in ballot, and they fill out the mail-in ballot, but they may not know that they are actually committing a deportable crime.”
