Louisiana State Flower: Magnolia

From almanac.com:

Magnolias aren’t just for southern gardeners. The genus Magnolia is varied and encompasses hundreds of plant species, with many more cultivars developed. Today, magnolias are available in all sizes, from small shrubbery to large shade trees, deciduous or evergreen. Some are cold, hardy, and frigid, as in zone 4.

Magnolias are believed to be among the oldest flowering plants, at about 100 million years old. They have been blooming in spring and summer since dinosaurs roamed the earth.

The giant of the family, southern magnolias (M. grandiflora), are evergreen trees with large, leathery leaves found throughout the American South and grow to gigantic proportions, often reaching 60 to 80 feet tall. Leaves can be epically sized as well, and on larger trees, can be a foot long. The blooms are dinner-plate-sized, and the fragrance is fantastic.

Magnolias come in so many sizes that they can be used for every landscape situation, from huge shade trees to flowering specimens, privacy hedges and borders, screening plantings, and even in beds and containers. When shopping, choose magnolias based on flowering time, hardiness zone, color, and mature size.

When to Plant Magnolias

Magnolias can be planted in spring or fall. If planting in autumn, get the tree in the ground 4-6 weeks before the first frost to allow time to grow new roots. Bare root stock received in spring should be planted as soon as received.

Where to Plant Magnolias

While specific cultivar needs may vary, most members of the Magnolia genus prefer full sun to light shade and, in hotter climates, need protection from the intense afternoon sun. Their branches can be brittle, so pick a site protected from the wind.

Magnolias grow large, thick, shallow root systems and should be kept away from building foundations or sidewalks. Check the tag and visualize the mature size of the tree or shrub. Some magnolias are enormous, while others are small enough to grow in containers.

When planting, select a site with the following:

Full to partial sun. Choose a site with morning and midday sun but afternoon shade in hotter climates.

Moist but well-drained sites are best. Very dry or wet sites are not suitable.

Acidic soil, pH 5.5-6.5, is best.

Types of Magnolias

Little Gem’ (M. grandiflora) is a good choice for small yards. It reaches 15 feet in height and flowers within a few years.

Centennial’ (M. stellata) is a star magnolia with slightly pink 5-inch flowers. A vigorous and cold hardy cultivar.

San Jose’ (M. x soulangeana) is a saucer magnolia with deep magenta flowers. Fragrant and vigorous, it makes an excellent container plant.

  1. Good morning, Miss Pat.

I have two Magnolia Grandifloras at the edge of the woods bordering my yard. They have big white blooms in the late spring and bright red seeds on big seed pods.

We call the pink magnolias that bloom before the foliage appears ‘Japanese Magnolias’ and they bloom very early in the Spring down here and the blooms can sometimes get frost bitten.

Magnolia leaves mixed with pine branches make beautiful wreaths and garlands for Christmas – https://confettistyle.com/decorating-with-magnolia-leaves/

      1. I love natural decorations – pine, fir, balsam – love those LL Bean balsam wreaths – the fragrance of evergreens is one of my favorite things about Christmas – along with the navel oranges, cinnamon coffee cakes… and the broadcast of Lessons and Carols – Kings College Cambridge.

        1. mine too! we never had a fake tree–the smell of the pine was worth the price of vacuuming up needles for a month. and the cinnamon rolls–a Christmas morning tradition we had when the kids were small. both sets of grandparents would come to watch the kids open their gifts. we still continue the tradition even though it’s just the 2 of us here.

    1. Morning, GA! Waaay too cold here for magnolias – do they rebloom or only bloom once? I generally won’t put in any plants that don’t rebloom thru the summer – the exception was the Yellow Lilac I planted this spring. Kind of a waste to me to go thru all that effort for only one blooming.

      1. Well – it’s a trade off – way too hot and humid here for Lilacs. I’ve never seen or smelled one. Nor a Lily of the Valley nor a Peony.

        1. Oh, I forgot about the Lily of the Valley. I did put that all along the front of my house. It was a nostalgia thing since my Grandma with whom I lived had them at her house. And the smell in the spring is to die for! The 2 peony bushes were already here – I’ve considered more than once just digging them up..

There are some lilacs that will grow well in the south:

“If you’re a fan of lilacs but live in the Lower South, you may think that these fragrant blooms are off-limits for your garden. After all, lilacs are typically assoiated with cooler climates and require a significant period of winter chill in order to bloom the following spring.

However, there are actually several varieties of lilacs that are well-suited to the heat and humidity of the Southern United States. These low-chill hybrids include ‘Lavender Lady,’ ‘Blue Skies,’ and ‘Angel White,’ all of which can thrive in Zone 8 and other areas with mild winters.”

          1. My gardening time is so limited now. Both my roses died while I was at the Village tending to Sally Q. I have tried numerous times to grow roses, but have failed each time.
Fortunately, my city and a neighboring city have many rose gardens. I love to walk around and smell them. The fragrance of roses is so comforting to me.

            1. Yeah, roses aren’t my thing either, except the climbing rose and that takes a lot of pruning to keep it blooming. Mine needs a complete prune again. The summer after I took it down to the ground, I had the most blooms ever. Almost none this year since I’ve let it go for several years.

  2. Morning All!
good sleeping last night. we had the windows open, nice cool breeze filtered in.

We went to walmart yesterday afternoon. Mom called and needed us to bring some personal care items that she just realized she was out of and hubby suggested we go to NY because the store that we buy salt blocks for the deer is there. (it’s getting small)
I detest the NY walmart frankly. first they took away the plastic bags and charged you for paper bags. then they gave you paper bags but you have to ask them. now you can bring your own but then there’s a process for that. it’s weird, it’s inconvenient, it’s NY.
    rant over
yesterday i was zipping thru the store trying to get mom’s items in the personal care section and there was a lady’s cart was blocking where i needed to be. I tried to go around her but she refused to budge either way. Finally i came out and asked if she would move so I could get to (pointing) that product. She said no I can’t move. I need to get in here (she pointed to the locked glass cabinet that has the condoms in it.) She said, I asked a clerk to come with a key and it’s been almost 10 minutes. I’m not moving!
I went to the customer services desk and told them this lady’s story and of course over the loud speaker they asked so and so to report with the KEY to the condom cabinet. I thanked her and turned my cart to go. This young man behind me smiled and nodded. ok Grandma he said. i think i turned beet red.

    1. Morning, Pat! It stormed pretty much all night – wind, heavy rain, thunder, lightning….but nothing was damaged thankfully. Still cloudy with more rain in the forecast for the next 3-4 days – some areas of NE could see up to 2″ of rain or more.

Wheezer wasn’t on the patio so I walked out to look in the yard – I could see something out between the garden beds and shed but couldn’t tell what it was. When I got my binocs and looked, it was Wheezer stalking something. So I called out to him – he perked up and came right over for his morning tuna. Then he waited until I filled the dish with dry food so he could take 2 bites, THEN leave. Manipulation, pure and simple!

I wouldn’t have turned beet-red – I’d have looked at him and said: “You have NO idea what you’re missing!” That whole bag thing is beyond ridiculous!!!

he got me off guard to say anything. wonder if i looked “guilty”? LOL

it IS! so many shoppers in NY bring their own cloth bags and every time i see them i wonder if they wash them after meat has been in them?

        1. For someone like me, that would be impossible since I shop once a month and always have multiple bags to load/unload. I am NOT going to go out and buy 8-10 cloth bags to use once a month, thank you!!!

Two years ago, Khamenei hired Hezbollah thugs to deliberately shoot and blind Iranian freedom fighters. So many innocents lost their eyes.

Today, more than 500 Hezbollah members reportedly had their eyes blown out of their heads in the pager bombings.

  5. I tried to post the Tweet but WP won’t accept it – it posted @ M’s. In the video, his legs are shaking almost constantly…jittery…I wonder if it is nerves or part of his disease since his voice is like that, too – shaky.

EXCERPT: “….But at a Saturday campaign appearance at the Arizona Christian University in Glendale with former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Kennedy was downright funny as he described a plane ride with Trump years ago. Reminiscing about his early relationship with Trump, he admitted it wasn’t always so friendly:

On two occasions, I sued him. [Audience laughs.]

He was trying to build golf courses up in the New York City Reservoir watershed. And I sued him successfully to stop that.

But then things took a different turn:

At one point, my wife at that time had been trying to find… she wanted to go to Palm Beach for the weekend to see my mom over Easter, and I said I, you know, I didn’t want to buy tickets for all the kids.

And she said, what if I find a free ride? I said OK. I didn’t think she was gonna do it, but then she said I found a free ride, and I said, “Who?”

And she said Donald Trump—and I said, I’m suing him! [Audience breaks into laughter.]

But here’s where Trump’s real nature came through—he didn’t care.

Then she said, he told me he knows you’re suing him, but it’s OK anyway…

I had a great time. [Pause.]

I still sued him. [Audience erupts.]

I found that to be a laugh-out-loud story, and one that shows that political adversaries can still be cordial. Would that still be possible today given the left’s insanely divisive political rhetoric? I don’t know, but RFK Jr. and Trump seem to have forged an unlikely bond. Their conversation about religion and God was especially profound:

After the night that he called me after he got shot and, Butler, one of the first things he said to me, he said, you know, are you a religious person? And I said well, you know, I have a deep belief in God. The spirituality which is the central organizing force in my life.

And he said, you know, I think I believe in that too now.”

Another display of Fascism in Illinois. As Sundance describes, this type of fascism is where corporations run the government, not the other way around. This is the type of of issue the Commiela/FJB administration has pushed with their radical Green New Deal.

“Opponents rally to stop carbon capture projects near water supplies in Illinois”

    Excerpts:

Rickert’s group released poll results that showed 82% of Illinois registered voters say they oppose private corporations’ use of eminent domain for their privatd carbon dioxide pipelines and sequestration projects, and 89% think carbon capture and storage poses a serious risk of carbon dioxide leaks, potentially at lethal levels.

“A private corporation should not be allowed to take our property by eminent domain for a project that could damage our land, and be routed close enough to our homes and schools to put our lives in danger,” said Kathy Campbell, vice president of Citizens Against Heartland Greenwashing projects.

According to the Illinois Prairie Rivers Network, three carbon capture projects are proposing to inject carbon through the aquifer and store it underneath.

    1. I have always despised eminent domain! That was one of the bad things they included in the Constitution. Had they kept it to the basics, like only in support of ACTUAL “national security” (and not their BS excuses that they claim to be national security issues) THAT I can understand. But, as with every other Constitutional issue, it was been twisted like a pretzel!

  7. EXCERPT: “….I don’t know if enough of us believe that anymore. The unique truth about America is that she only works if we tap into our interconnectedness and “interdependentness.” Those are big words indicating a simple idea: Here, we have to care about one another. It is our only bond. We don’t have homogeneity, we don’t have common heritage or even really culture. What we have and what has made our greatness so durable is our ability to combine to magnified effect. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

And the great news is, we have so much more potential in America than I see anywhere else.

Who red-pilled Chris Cuomo? Who knew Fredo could actually reason?

We are so desperate to drag ourselves away from greatness, from progress, from each other. That is what I see that really bothers me, and the reaction and lack of reaction to the second attempt on Trump in the last couple of months. Oh, but the guy didn’t even shoot. What if it was your father? Or what if it was Kamala Harris? Or President Biden—God forbid. Do you think it would be almost a shoulder shrug and more talk about the Secret Service and allocation of funds than just how crazy it is that this is what’s happening in our country? That reaction of, well, come on, don’t make too much of it. He had an AK-47 pointed at him! The reaction is unacceptable, and it’s the second time media and political players have gotten away with playing down what should be a cause for panic.

Cuomo took a cheap shot at Elon Musk criticizing a recent X post, which has since been deleted, pointing out exactly what he said above (What if it had been Kamala Harris?), but then he returned back to being insightful.

We need our leaders to step up and start being rewarded for stepping up and doing the right thing. Both of those things matter.

Let’s hope his older brother Andrew is listening to this. Cuomo once again dives into blaming the right for the divisiveness of the discourse, but then shifts gears and makes an amazing admission.

It is just as troubling to me to hear about fake stories of eating cats and dogs as it is to hear fake concern by our sitting president and almost nothing from the Democrat who wants to lead us about what happened with Trump. “We don’t condone violence.” Who says that? What does it even mean? You don’t dismiss trivial pursuits of violence? Okay, who would? We need a lot more than that right now. We need reason to believe in who we are at our best, and we are starved of that.

Cuomo points out the round-robin of blame going around and the inflated rhetoric on both sides. But no one is taking action to do better, to be better. So Cuomo decided to be the change that he wished to see in the world. He actually called Trump up….”

But he’s come out with a number of startling things since CNN booted him, ostensibly because of a sexual assault claim against him and his supposed efforts to help his bro, the Guvnor. Which is ridiculous on it’s face – CNN did their best to help his bro, too. Also, I just do not believe all these sexual assault claims are legit, particularly seeing how they’ve twisted things to go after Trump. These companies make a decision they want someone gone for whatever reason but there is no out in their contract. So they come up with whatever claims they can make sound reasonable.

    —————–

The Metropolitan Detention Center, the Brooklyn jail that will absorb Metropolitan Correctional Center inmates, has drawn scrutiny for problems including sexual assault allegations against correctional officers, a weeklong power failure in January 2019, and an inmate’s death last year after he was sprayed with pepper spray.”

The Independent, Rhian Lubin, 4 hours ago

EXCERPT: “Deadly stabbings, “barbaric” living conditions and maggots in the food: this is the state of the New York prison where Sean “Diddy” Combs is being held.

Diddy is currently being housed in pretrial detention in the notorious Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and will stay there until he faces trial on racketeering and sex trafficking charges.

It’s a facility that is no stranger to famous faces, having previously housed sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, Fyre Festival fraudster Billy McFarland and rapper R Kelly, who was found guilty of child sexual abuse.

Diddy was arrested on Monday in New York and hit with charges of racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution for allegedly running a decades-long “criminal enterprise” that forced victims to carry out sex acts.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. In his first court appearance on Tuesday, the media mogul’s attorneys asked the judge to release him on house arrest until the trial but the request was denied….”

  9. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/17/arts/music/sean-combs-diddy-indicted.html

Our Take: Five days ago, federal investigators raided the homes and offices of several high profile politicians in NYC, seemingly in connection with racketeering and corruption activities. Two days ago, the NYC Police Commissioner resigned. Among the unconfirmed allegations, speculations really, are pay offs and ‘fixing.’ Organized crime, essentially.

Now Diddy has been federally indicted — and arrested — and among the allegations in the indictment are racketeering and corruption, including payoffs and fixing. I’m not suggesting that the two federal RICO investigations are connected. But the timing sure is interesting, especially considering the vast amount of people involved in Diddy’s network, according to AUSA Williams.

Also, no big deal, but allegedly Diddy was big on recording blackmail material.

The music industry titan was denied bail during his hearing Tuesday and will remain in the slammer for now. The internet is widely speculating that he will be Epstein’d. There are very few degrees of separation between one percenters, so it’s not unlikely. Also, no big deal, Diddy was friendly with the Clintons.

Checking my lopes, I found 2 more had fallen off, one super ripe like the one I gave Lois. I gave those 2 small ones to her as well, for her daughter & SIL. I clipped the remaining jumbo earlier than I did the other one to see if the fruit inside is firmer. I will also cube some of it to freeze as a test.

  12. Just The News: “The International Brotherhood of Teamsters on Wednesday declined to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump and chose to sit out the presidential election, marking the first time first time since 1996 that it did not endorse a candidate.

“Neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before Big Business,” Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien told The Hill.

“We sought commitments from both Trump and Harris not to interfere in critical union campaigns or core Teamsters industries — and to honor our members’ right to strike — but were unable to secure those pledges,” he went on.

The union’s decision represents a major blow to Harris, as union voters have typically been a major Democratic constituency.

Its refusal to endorse a candidate, however, follows polling that showed members of the union overwhelmingly preferred former President Donald Trump.

O’Brien himself spoke at the Republican National Convention earlier this year and Trump has long sought to win over union voters with pledges to preserve American domestic industry.

“While the Executive Board of the Teamsters is making no formal endorsement, the vast majority of rank-and-file working men and women in this important organization want President Donald Trump back in the White House,” the Trump campaign said in a press release.”

  13. “Trump Dodges Falling Piano, Swinging Death Blade, Spiked Pitfall Trap On Way To Rally”

    Article Image

LONG ISLAND, NY — The tension of election season reached a new high today with conflicting reports of further attempts on the life of the former president, as Donald Trump dodged a falling piano, a swinging death blade, and a spiked pitfall trap on his way to a campaign rally.

The latest series of deadly traps matched what has become a disturbing pattern along Trump’s pathway to election day, with experts speculating that the former president may find himself dodging multiple assassination attempts per day over the next several weeks.

“It’s almost as if there’s some unseen force out to get him,” said one campaign insider. “Some members of the media have started accusing us of being paranoid, but after that huge wrecking ball swung just barely in front of Trump’s vehicle yesterday followed by him narrowly avoiding stepping into that mote filled with hungry crocodiles outside Mar-a-Lago the day before, we’re all starting to think something fishy is going on.”

Trump’s critics were quick to suggest the events weren’t as dangerous as reported. “Oh, come on, like that’s anything worse than what we all deal with every day,” said one anti-Trump protester. “So he’s having to dodge numerous deadly attacks each day, big whoop! He obviously brought this on himself with all his divisive rhetoric and attempts to overthrow democracy. Maybe he should do himself a favor and just drop out of the race.”

At publishing time, Trump had reportedly safely reached the location of today’s rally, despite being narrowly missed by a poison blow dart, having a knife thrown into the wall just beside his head, and rolling out of the way of a runaway cement truck.

  18. The endless dunes. Must be the Empty Quarter. Or Namibia. What ancient civilization lie buried and forgotten under the shifting sands?

“Located in Mauritania, the structure is about 50 km in diameter. It was initially thought to be the result of an impact event because large meteors typically produce circular features on Earth’s surface. But geologic studies have revealed that it is actually an uplifted geologic dome, also known as a domed anticline.”

  20. NF: Hate to admit it but Sanders is correct on this one! Should be criminal, IMO.

“Pharma Giant Charging $900+ for Drug That Costs Only $5 to Make

Top executives of major drugmakers told Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) they could sell a generic version of Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic for less than $100 a month and still turn a profit. A recent study found the drug can be manufactured for less than $5 a month.”

EXCERPT: “U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called out the pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk on Tuesday for charging American patients more than $900 a month for the increasingly popular diabetes drug Ozempic, even though generic manufacturers are willing to sell the medication for significantly less.

During a panel discussion with experts, Sanders said he and his staff have been in contact with the top executives of major drugmakers who say they could sell a generic version of Ozempic for less than $100 a month — and still turn a profit. A recent study found that the drug can be manufactured for less than $5 a month.

“Novo Nordisk, which has made nearly $50 billion in sales off of Ozempic and Wegovy, charges Americans almost $1,000 a month — the highest prices in the world,” Sanders, the chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, said Tuesday.

    “Why? Excessive corporate greed.”

Ozempic and Wegovy are part of a class of treatments known as GLP-1s. Wegovy, a weight-loss drug that Novo Nordisk sells for $1,349 a month in the U.S., contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic, which is approved only for people with Type 2 diabetes….”

“Rush to Use Ventilators Killed Thousands of COVID Patients

“Many, many thousands” of COVID-19 patients died because they were put on ventilators and denied treatment with ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine or even vitamin D, respiratory therapist Mark Bishofsky told CHD.TV.”

EXCERPT: “Thousands of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 died because of a rush to put people on ventilators — while denying them medications like ivermectin, hydroxychloroquine and vitamin D, according to respiratory therapist Mark Bishofsky.

A respiratory therapist is a healthcare provider who helps diagnose, treat and manage conditions that affect the lungs, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

They are the clinicians who perform intubation — inserting a tube through a person’s mouth or nose, then down into their airway — so the patient can receive oxygen from a ventilator machine.

In a recent episode of “Good Morning CHD,” Bishofsky said he witnessed hospital staff opting to prematurely intubate many COVID-19 patients.

    He said:

“Many, many thousands of patients died because of this rush to early intubation and not allowing early treatment with medications like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine or even vitamin D — they wouldn’t even give these patients vitamin D. They just wanted to intubate them and put them on remdesivir.”

Patients were being intubated “when they were needing as little as three liters of oxygen,” according to Bishofsky, who said he’d never seen that before in his 25 years of practice.

“That’s so little oxygen to the point where if you took the patient off of it, they’re gonna be fine,” he said. “But there was this rush to intubate these patients.”
