Happy National Frankenstein Day!

Young Frankenstein is one of my favorite Mel Brooks movies.  Mental Floss details 15 thing we may not know about the movie.

From MENTAL FLOSS:

In 1974, Mel Brooks gave the world Young Frankenstein—a movie that would set the bar for all future horror comedies to come.

Studio Executives tried Tricking Director Mel Brooks into Shooting the Film in Color

By the mid-‘70s, black and white cinema was an endangered species. Nevertheless, Brooks felt strongly about replicating the feel of Universal’s classic Frankenstein films by going colorless. However, not everybody shared his vision. Columbia Studios’ brass thought the style was unmarketable and, as Brooks explains in this delightful interview (skip to 47:40), used some slippery tactics in an attempt to get their way:

“They said ‘Okay, we’ll make it in black and white, but on color stock so that we can show it in Peru, which just got color. And I said ‘No. No because you’ll screw me. You will say this and then, in order to save the company, you will risk a lawsuit and you will print everything in color. It’s gotta be on… black & white thick film.”

Thankfully, Brooks prevailed, though 20th Century Fox wound up taking charge of the project.

Star and Co-Writer Gene Wilder Convinced Brooks to Forgo his Usual Cameo Appearance

Like Alfred Hitchcock, Brooks usually gave himself a part in his own films, from Blazing Saddles’ loopy governor to the wine-selling Rabbi of Robin Hood: Men in Tights. These characters regularly broke the fourth wall and “winked” at the audience, something Wilder felt would clash with Young Frankenstein’s tone. So, as a condition of his taking on the lead role, Wilder made Brooks agree to remain off-camera. However, the director did provide some howling: As Frederick Frankenstein (Wilder) takes his first ride to the family castle, the distant wolf cry which startles him is a sound Brooks actually vocalized himself.

Early On, We Hear the Exact Same Conversation Repeated in Both English and German

En route to Romania, our protagonist catches a train to New York, whereupon he hears an American couple bickering. In the very next scene, Frederick (now on a Transylvania-bound locomotive) witnesses a European pair having an identical, word-for-word exchange in German

One of Igor’s Best Moments Inspired a Hit Aerosmith Song

“Walk this way!” Marty Feldman’s Igor instructs his master, who proceeds to copy the hunchback’s shuffling gait. Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler found this line hilarious and repurposed it as the title of a track about high school lovers.

Hans Delbrück Was a Real Person

As Frederick readies his monster, he sends Igor to fetch a very special brain which rests in a jar labeled “Hans Delbruck: Scientist and Saint”. The actual Hans Delbrück (1848-1929) was an accomplished military historian whose son, Max, won a Nobel Prize for his work with viruses.

Several Props Had Previously Appeared in the Masterful 1931 Frankenstein Film

Taking his feature-length tribute to the next level, Brooks included much of the faux lab equipment used in that earlier picture.

Teri Garr Based Her Character’s Voice on Cher’s Hairdresser

Garr made several appearances on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour and used Cher’s German wig-stylist as a model for ditzy lab assistant Inga’s heavy accent.

Brooks Hired Kenneth Mars After the Actor Signed Off on an Odd Costuming Choice

The two had already collaborated in 1968’s The Producers, and while casting Young Frankenstein, Brooks offered Mars the role of grumpy Inspector Kemp, but not before pitching an eccentric wardrobe gimmick that ultimately wound up on-screen.

“He [said],” Mars later reminisced, “‘Let me ask you this… if you’re wearing an eye patch and you’ve got a monocle on top of the eye patch, is that too much?’ I said ‘Of course not.’ He said ‘Good, you’re hired!’”

Gene Hackman Specifically Asked Wilder for a Part in Young Frankenstein Because he “Wanted to Try Comedy”

According to the movie’s Blu-Ray commentary, Hackman—who’d been thrice nominated for an Academy Award (and won one in 1971)—learned about Young Frankenstein through his frequent tennis partner Wilder and requested a role. Ultimately, ‘Harold’—the lonely blind character he briefly portrayed—sparked one of the most memorable sequences in comedic history.

Peter Boyle Had to Wear a Special Pad Over His Crotch to Avoid Getting Scalded During the Famous Blind Man Scene

During their hysterical encounter, sightless Harold winds up accidentally dumping a bowlful of hot soup onto the poor creature’s lap. Fortunately, Boyle’s protective gear kept him from having to method act his way through the ordeal.

A Huge Percentage of the Movie Had to Be Deleted

“For every joke that worked, there were three that fell flat,” says Brooks, who whittled Young Frankenstein down to its current runtime after observing several mixed reactions from test audiences. This cut material included a clip in which Frederick’s relatives listen to a recorded will left by his great grandfather Beauvort von Frankenstein whose message starts skipping and nonchalantly repeats the phrase “Up Yours!”

In addition, the “Puttin’ on the Ritz” number was nearly axed as well. Brooks reportedly felt that having Dr. Frankenstein and his monster tap dance to an old Irving Berlin song seemed “too crazy.” Hearing this, Wilder—who though it brilliant—snapped and came “close to rage and tears” before Brooks unexpectedly changed his tune. “I wanted to see how hard you’d fight for it,” said the director, “And I knew if you fought hard enough, it was right…You did, so it’s in.”

Wilder was Constantly Cracking Up During Takes

According to Cloris Leachman, “He killed every take [with his laughter] and nothing was done about it!” Shots would frequently have to be repeated as many as fifteen times before Wilder could finally summon a straight face. But, to be fair, he certainly wasn’t the only one who couldn’t always keep it together.

Young Frankenstein sees Marty Feldman’s comic genius on full display, which was often more than his castmates could handle. For example, the scene where Frederick’s fiancée Elizabeth (Madeline Kahn) greets him at the castle generated a lengthy gag reel because Feldman—whose character starts ravenously gnawing on her mink scarf—kept everyone in stitches with his manic over-acting.

Brooks’ Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein were the 1st and 3rd highest-grossing films of 1974, respectively

“It’s good to be the king!” Before this pivotal year, the funnyman’s earlier efforts—The Producers and The Twelve Chairs (1970)—netted mixed reviews and had lackluster box office performances. But after turning out these back-to-back hits at breakneck speed, Brooks’ reputation as one of Hollywood’s greatest comedic directors was secured.

Leachman Was Asked to Reprise Her Role for the ‘Young Frankenstein’ Musical

After getting eliminated from ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, Brooks offered the 82-year-old actress a chance to take a second stab at playing Frau Blücher for his on-stage Young Frankenstein musical, but the show’s run ended before her schedule freed up.

Throughout the Shoot, Brooks Offered Wilder Directing Advice

Knowing his star dreamed of one day sitting in the director’s chair, Brooks made a point to give him as many pointers as possible before shooting concluded. Wilder reminisced, “Mel would say, ‘Do you know the trouble I’m in because I didn’t shoot that close-up? Don’t do that.’ I would say, ‘To whom are you talking?’ ‘You, when you’re directing.’”

Though both headed various productions after Young Frankenstein, they’d never collaborate on another flick. Nevertheless, the pair’s shared legacy is unimpeachable. All three of Brooks’ movies in which Wilder appeared—The Producers, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein—have been selected for preservation by the National Film Registry and included on the American Film Institute’s “100 Funniest Movies of All Time” list.

  1. Morning All!
i think we’re in for a few rainy days here.
    dark skies out there.
we noticed we have maybe one or two male hummers left–the rest are females. seems early for them to start their migration. We’ve already had some into October,

    1. Morning, Pat! I don’t recall ever seeing any of the Frankenstein movies. I’ve never been interested in such things.

Meanwhile, we’re in for a stretch of clear, sunny and cooler weather. Nipply this morning at only 58 with clear skies. I think we’re done with the 90’s, thankfully. I noticed yesterday morning, when I was waiting for the storm to move in, there wasn’t even ONE bird anywhere to be seen – no WP’s, finches, sparrows, turtledoves….not one. Guess it was the atmospheric pressure from the storm moving in. Some areas not that far from me – O’Neill – got big hail storms with a lot of damage. But the SE of the state got hit the worst, I think.

I’m going to meet Michael later this morning, then on to visit Mom to return the picture of the family farm and p/u the 2 inhalers she’s got.

              1. Well, first, I’m older than you are and we were always more fond of the real-life shows, like Lassie, RinTinTin, The Lone Ranger, etc., etc. I can vaguely remember watching Petticoat Junction and shows like that; of course, the usual Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, etc., etc.

  2. Good morning, Pat & Filly!

Fascinating movie – is it a cult classic? I’ve been averse to Frankenstein and horror movies since childhood – but I did watch the first Hitchcock The Birds movie and had nightmares for a long time, and read Sherlock Holmes’ Hound of the Baskervilles.

Coincidentally, last night, I had a nightmare in which the Village Home Care PT and her aide, came to inspect our Sally care routine and disapproved, kept shaking her head and saying we were doing it all wrong, and she went on to change everything behind my back, with disastrous results – ! Then I woke up and it was only a dream – Praise the Lord! :8-)

We are trying out a new Care Schedule – ! I’m now coming to the Village on Thursday by 5pm bringing something good for dinner (last night I made a simple supper – broiled/roasted Salmon, mashed red potatoes, Broccoli and carrots) and am on duty until Sunday at 5-5:30 when I have Sally ready for bed then I drive home. Her Dad feeds her dinner on Sunday evening, gives shots every morning and checks on her at night when I’m at home. I’m home 4 nights and at the Village 3 nights. That gives Sabrina, her other caregiver a long rest on the weekend – she only works 3 evenings, and gives me a long rest at home during the week. Hopefully, neither of us will get burned out – ! We can each cover for each other for emergencies and vacations. Sabrina has worked with Sally for 18 years and she’s incredibly patient and kind.

Sally Q is much better on the new medicine – Celexa – Citalopram. Less jumpy, less irritable, more able to control her emotions, more cheerful – I’d say 30-50% improved. We are not seeing any adverse side effects. Yay!

There is a paper on this med for her disease.  Citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, improves symptoms of Friedreich’s ataxia. Rohr A, Eichler K, Hafezi-Moghadam N. Pharmacopsychiatry. 1999 May;32(3):113-4. doi: 10.1055/s-2007-979205. PMID: 10463380

      1. Howdy, Miss Filly! Glad your hand is healing! Tomcats are warriors and sometimes do not make good house pets. Jake seems to be an exception. We have had mostly female cats, but one time tried a beautiful orange male kitten we named him Dandelion – Dan de Lion, get it? We were living in town and had a small house then, so we had him neutered so he wouldn’t spray and hoped that would make him a good house pet. However, when Sally’s dad came home for lunch (office down the street) and would take his daily nap, the Dandelion would sneak and stalk him…clicking his mouth and then pounce and proceed to bite (not deeply, mostly horse playing, but FQ couldn’t relax and rest during his nap for fear of being assaulted. We gave Dandelion to a patient who had a lovely farm with a pond and woods and he lived out his days happily afterwards, where he could roam and establish his cat kingdom. Their son even caught a fresh fish to welcome him to their family! Sally Q has a photo of Dandelion lounging regally at his farm kingdom (he took ownership as cats do). Our homes become their feline fiefdoms and we their servants in a matter of minutes.

        1. Actually, I prefer male cats – females will do the same thing – they all stalk & pounce, bite – and females are often head cases, tbh. Jake thinks he’s a warrior in his mind even tho he was neutered at least 11 years ago and declawed in front – but he was a street cat initially so he’d been in those situations before. Cats overall tend to be territorial.

Fury at DA after illegal migrant truck driver who killed Colorado man faces just 1 year in prison

The widow of a Colorado man killed by an illegal immigrant trucker is outraged as he faces just a year in prison after being charged with and pleading guilty to mere minor traffic violations.

“I’m mad that I’m not going to get justice for my husband,” devastated widow Deann Miller told 9 News. “Mad because the most this man can get is a year for murdering my husband because the DA refused to charge him with more.”

I lost the man I’ve been with since I was 17.”

Her husband, 64-year-old Scott Miller, was killed in June when a semi driven by 47-year-old Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza veered out of control and dumped a load of steel and iron rods across Highway 285.

But Cruz-Mendoza, a Mexican living in the US illegally, was only charged by the Jefferson County District Attorney with minor traffic misdemeanors — careless driving resulting in a death, and careless driving resulting in injury.

He also did not have a valid operator’s license at the time of the wreck.

      An illegal deported 16 times.

TGP also has the story and a quote notes the disparity in the treatment of an illegal compared to an American,

“Recall that the same DA’s office sentenced an American truck driver in Colorado to 110 years in prison after a deadly accident. Colorado’s governor had to step in and reduce that prison sentence because it was so extreme.”

She needs the extra jobs to support her family and now she struggles even more. Plus it’s dangerous for customers who have no idea these drivers have not been vetted at all. they could be casing places to come back later and rob.

If it was not legal for President Trump to accompany families at Arlington National Cemetery the Marines would not have allowed it.

The Marine Corps is very serious about its responsibilities at Arlington.

As is the Executive Director of Army Cemeteries.

Donald Trump just issued a chilling warning about the illegal immigrant crime crisis, predicting that it’s about to spiral out of control. He pointed to last night’s gang rampage in Denver, where armed thugs wielded machine guns, as a grim preview of what’s to come—possibly spreading to other states. Meanwhile, the Mexican border state of Chihuahua is on high alert, bracing for the arrival of Tren de Aragua, a brutal Venezuelan gang reportedly making its way through the region with plans to storm into the U.S. near El Paso, Texas. Keep your second amendment close.

Noor Bin Ladin, Aug 30, 2024

EXCERPT: “Most people in the world view Switzerland as a safe, sensible, fair and free nation. The reality is that behind its pristine veneer, it is as corrupt – if not more – than any other nation, and is becoming increasingly repressive at an alarming rate.

As many of you know, I am Swiss (from my mother’s side) and live in my home country. This has given me a certain vantage point to report on globalism, with Switzerland having been selected to host these dark institutions on our soil back in the 19th century.

Today, I wanted to draw your attention to more local news and the bleak state of free speech here. While all eyes are on the U.K. at the moment due to their Orwellian crack down on freedom of expression — to the point of jailing people for memes and stickers — and on France as we await more information on Pavel Durov’s arrest, free speech is under unprecedented attack in Switzerland as well.

A friend of mine, who goes by the pseudonym “Barbouille” on X, has just been fined the hefty amount of CHF 4’800, approx $ 5’700 — for a tweet. His crime? Calling out the indoctrination of children being taught what LGBTQI… stands for in a classroom, under a video posted by another account on March 24, 2023.

Here is the video, and a screenshot of Barbouille’s comment:

    (Video)

Barbouille’s post referred to people who engage in such indoctrination as “degenerates,” with a funny play on words in French “DGNRÉS+” and a direct hint to the famous French TV program “Des Chiffres et des Lettres,” which was referenced by the original poster with his “consonant, vowel,…” tweet.

A few hours after publishing the video, they deleted it. Not wanting his response to be floating around out of context, Barbouille also deleted his comment shortly thereafter, and then forgot about it. In late September, six months after this X exchange, Barbouille received a summons for the police department of the city of Lausanne to present himself on October 4, 2023….”

  12. so she wants to grant amnesty to illegals that came in during the maggot’s administration, but ALSO grant amnesty to those deported during President Trump’s administration.

    FTA
The Democratic National Committee endorsed a plan that would offer amnesty to illegal aliens who were deported under former president Donald Trump and invite them back to the United States.

The official Democratic Party platform supports the passage of the U.S. Citizenship Act, a bill that was sent to Congress by the Biden-Harris administration on January 20, 2021. That bill would create a sweeping amnesty process for the millions of illegal aliens currently residing in the country. But a provision also allows those who were “removed from or who departed the United States on or after January 20, 2017” if they resided in the country for three years prior to apply for amnesty as well.

Such a proposal would constitute one of the most radical changes to the nation’s immigration policy in history. Roughly 1.5 million illegal aliens were deported by the Trump administration, including tens of thousands each year who were guilty of serious crimes such as sexual assault.

Vice President Kamala Harris has applauded the bill on several occasions. In June 2021, she thanked U.S. senator Bob Menendez (D., N.J.) for “leading the way on the U.S. Citizenship Act.”

Last February, Harris said in a statement that “on the first day of our administration, we sent a comprehensive immigration reform bill to Congress that included an increase in funding for border security and a pathway to citizenship for immigrants, such as Dreamers who have been here for years.” The statement makes no mention of offering citizenship to those who were deported under her predecessor.

Of course, I forgot to get a lope to take to Mom and when I got back, I discovered that the 2 ripest ones had popped loose. I can’t wait to dig into it!!! It smells heavenly but there’s still a bit of green here and there. I’ll wait a day or two and make do with my melon in the meantime. I took one over to Lois and Oran.

Sometimes I think Mom does it intentionally – starts projects when she knows I’m coming – she won’t ask for help but she knows if I see it, I’ll ask and offer to help…yep, next thing you know, I’m finishing the jobs. LOL – she was cutting a new shelf board for her shelving unit for her new, bigger MW. She was also half-way thru hanging a new shower curtain. Tee-hee!

I cut the board for her and lifted out the MW to put up on the shelf, then finished the shower curtain. She didn’t buy the right sized liner so I had to jimmy rig the holes in such a way that the ends of the liner will stick to the shower walls. She was also doing laundry! Pretty spry for a 93 year old!

  16. “US ambassador in Budapest labeled an ‘opposition activist’ as tensions boil between Orbán and Biden governments”

    ReMIX News, August 30, 2024

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “David Pressman, the U.S. Ambassador to Hungary, is one of the leading figures of the Hungarian opposition, and his statements should be assessed accordingly, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in Brussels on Thursday.

“The U.S. ambassador in Budapest is an opposition activist and a leading figure in the Hungarian opposition, therefore, his statements should be assessed accordingly. And if I wanted to talk about the manifestation of his opposition activism, I could say that, interestingly, when the prime minister of Italy visited China and said that China was an inescapable dialogue partner in the current fragile international context, the opposition activist did not activate himself,” he said.

David Pressman has a long history of criticizing the Hungarian conservative government and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He recently spoke out against Orbán’s peace mission, which involved visits to Moscow, Kyiv, Beijing, and Washington D.C.

Szijjártó was responding to Pressman’s criticism of the “peace mission,” stating that many world leaders and EU leaders seek cooperation with countries considered adversarial to U.S. and Western interests, such as China. In fact, U.S. State Department head, Anthony Blinken, routinely visits China. Such actions are a standard part of diplomacy, and as far as Orbán is concerned, signify an effort to bring the war to an end and establish peace.

“Nor when President Zelensky called Donald Trump, he did not express his disapproval, or when the Ukrainian Foreign Minister was last in China, we did not hear his criticism,” said Szijjártó. “So obviously this was a statement inspired by an opposition stance,” he added.”

Our Take: Reports of violent newcomer gangs in Colorado have done nothing to sway progressive Democrat politicians and bureaucrats from their long held position that newcomers are our strength. Why would it? Decades of violence in California border towns have resulted in progressive Democrats’ decision to give the criminal invaders massive home loans.

Meanwhile, a Federal judge ruled Tuesday that Biden and Harris cannot give illegal farm workers collective bargaining rights that citizen farm workers don’t have.

Consider that for a minute. Border Czar Harris and her demented scrotus partner are advocating for criminally-invading farm workers to access rights that are not available to American farm workers.

In a change effort, you get the outcome you incentivize, and the Biden-Harris DHS is incentivizing sanctuary cities and NGOs. You can’t see the money at work solving the issue, because immigration is very complicated, it requires an elevated sense of equity and empathy and, also, the money is being laundered through NGOs.

Looting the treasury by funding an invasion is a nasty set of high crimes. Most Americans are now on board with the mass deportation platform, but we also must ensure that the communist revolutionaries driving this current fever dream are brought to justice.

  20. “Kamala Harris Lost in Space, Losing the Space Race: The Untold Story”

    Peter Navarro, Aug 30, 2024

EXCERPT: “Team, here’s a nice little piece that mines an unknown vein in the Kamala Harris resume. Folks need to know this stuff so please pass it along. Have a great Labor Day Weekend — Peter

Kamala Harris Has Lost Two Astronauts in Space and Is Losing the Space Race

EXCERPT: “When President Trump reestablished the National Space Council – JFK was the originator — we had a clear, bold vision: America was going back to the Moon, heading to Mars, and seeking to ensure American economic and military dominance in space.   By the end of Trump’s term, the U.S. Space Force was up and running, the Artemis manned mission to the moon was on track, and our commercial partnerships were flourishing.

Today, as Chair of the National Space Council, Vice President Kamala Harris has destroyed everything the Trump administration built.  The Boeing Starliner debacle is but the tip of Kamala’s iceberg.

Because of this debacle, two astronauts who headed out on a short mission to the International Space Station (ISS) won’t return until February 2025.  Even then, they will have to hitch a ride on an Elon Musk SpaceX capsule instead of the star-crossed Starliner.

As Space Council head, Kamala must shoulder a good share of the blame.  During the Trump administration, Boeing and other commercial partners knew damn well there was a leadership team in place that wouldn’t tolerate these kinds of delays and missteps.  With Chairman Kamala, the wheels and rockets have come off — there’s no accountability, no urgency, no plan.

To understand Kamala’s share of the Starliner blame, just take a look under the hood of the National Space Council itself. Under Trump, we had eight major meetings—all public, substantive, and with real Q&A. The Space Council wasn’t just going through the motions; we were making policy.

In contrast, Harris has held the bare legal minimum of three meetings.  Her last was a hasty, December throw-together where Harris gave a quick canned opening statement and then bailed, perhaps to plot the overthrow of Joe Biden and plan her path to the presidency.

Memo to American voters: This was the second time Kamala Harris bailed on a major responsibility.  The first was as border czar.  How’s that working out?…”

This particular statue was part of a larger group of statues of the king, which were probably placed in the temple of Bastet, the cat goddess, at Bubastis in the Delta.”

  23. I am adding a short daily prayer to the board. I would invite each of you, if you wish, to also add one or maybe two of your own liking. I do not want to stifle anyone but please limit yourself to one or two religious postings. here’s one I found that I liked.
