Weird Wednesdays: The George Stickney House

In Bull Valley, there exists one of the strangest homes in Illinois. It is located in rural McHenry County, Illinois, near Woodstock. The house I am talking about is the George Stickney House (also referred to as the Stickney Mansion).

You will notice right away something odd about this house: there are no sharp corners. The design of the home is Italianate. It is a beautiful home. Since 1979, it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stickney was the first in the township when he arrived there in 1835. Stickney was a very prosperous farmer, and he acquired enough money to build the home of his dreams. The home was built in 1856.

Aside from being a farmer, Stickney was a Spiritualist. He performed séances that were attended by many, including the most elite in the area. This influenced the design of the home. As a Spiritualist, Stickney believes that spirits hid in the corners. So problem solved: he got rid of the corners.

According to Haunted Places.org

Because of George Stickney’s belief in spiritualism, he designed his house with no 90-degree angles inside so that no spirits would be caught in the corners. The Stickneys had 10 children, but only 3 lived to adulthood, and they are said to have regularly conducted seances on the 2nd floor to speak to their children. Currently the building houses the local police department, and many spooky events occur here. Tenants after the Stickneys, and later, police officers, have noted apparitions, moving objects, electrical phenomena, doors opening by themselves, and more. The Holcombville Cemetery where the Stickney children are buried lies nearby, and they are said to haunt the entire neighborhood along with the spirit of a passenger killed in the crash of American Airlines Flight 191.

(The Stickney House is now the Bull Valley Police Headquarters and Richard Vance is a Village Administrator and Police Officer.)

From thegeorgestickneyhousemariahruiz.blogspot.com:

The story on the house is that George and Sylvia Stickney had ten children, but only 3 survived to adulthood. George and Sylvia were Mediums, which means they could talk to the dead. They would hold seances to communicate to their children who passed away. They also allowed others to come into their house so that they also can talk to their loved ones. George and Sylvia wanted to build a house that would be easier to communicate with their children. The Stickney’s believed that 90-degree angles were bad for spirits because the spirits would get stuck in the corner and house the evil spirits. When building their mansion, they wanted everything to be rounded so that the spirits can move freely, even the ceiling is rounded. Rumor has it that a 90-degree angle in the house is were George Stickney died. Richard confirmed that wasn’t true.  The house was searched and documented and there was no 90-degree angles found at the time of George’s death. He also confirmed that George’s death was never documented, so no one knows how he died.

I asked Richard Vance what type of experiences he had in the house. He told me some stories about what happened to him and other officers. He said the spirits like to move things around on his desk. They have made his stapler vibrate vigorously, they stood all of his pencils on their erasers and things have flown off of shelves. He even told me that he has seen a lot of different spirits and talked to them as well. The spirits like to move around chairs. There are specifically two chairs that are upstairs that move often. They like to move them close together or stack them on tables. Richard told me he has talked to spirits threw a voice box.  He didn’t get into details with what was said but he has communicated with them. Richard described how it feels when a spirit touches you. He said, “There body feels like a spiderweb meshed into human figure, a cold, electric shock when they touch you.” Richard says that the spirits touch him all the time. They touch him on his face, hands, and arms. One time he had his gun on his side and a spirit poked him underneath his gun. Throughout the interview, Richard Vance kept reminding me that the house isn’t bad. The Stickney’s were good people, they just wanted to talk to their dead children.

Sylvia Stickney is the most active spirit in the house. Everyone that works there has seen her and say she is very beautiful. Sylvia Stickney wears a white gown and she loves children.  Richard informed me about an experience a little boy had while visiting the Stickney house. The boy was very scared to go inside because of what he had heard about it. When asked if he was still scared later on, he replied, “No, the nice women told me that I shouldn’t be scared, so I’m not scared anymore!” When they asked the little boy to describe what the women looked like, he pointed to the picture of Sylvia Stickney.

Richard Vance told me about the most active places and times of the house. The Stickney family is the most active spirits in the house besides the Indians. Richard believes that the Indians were on the property before the Stickney family built there home. He said that the spirits are more active from 5pm to 8pm and on the weekends. Richard said that the Stickney house still celebrates Mayday, which is the most active day out of the year. Mayday is a celebration on May 1st, which was a very big holiday in the 1800’s where everyone would celebrate with dancing and singing outside. The Stickney’s held tons of parties on Mayday. Whenever it rains, the house is more active as well. Richard confirmed what I read online that the second floor of the house and the staircase is the most active.

(You can read about Maria’s experience when she visited the second floor at the link posted above.)

    1. Morning, Pat! I think all these so-called spirits come from peoples’ imaginations, personally. There is always a logical explanation if you look hard enough. Not quite as chilly this morning @ 69 but we did finally get some rain during the night that continues this morning. Wheezer was waiting for her tuna, as usual, followed by her departure. Saw another male Oriole yesterday.

My new screen door looks so nice….now I need to clean up the patio to match! It will be about 10 days or so before Jason can get over here to take all my yard trash to the dump and the metal, glass, the old door, etc. for the contractors’ portion at the dump. They weigh it at the transfer station and you pay by weight, then it is all buried. I want to get it all ready to go by then, including my old gas grill and a shit-load of plant pots that I’ve saved thru the years, as well as other odds-and-ends.

      1. One good thing leads to another – but we know you will get the patio cleaned prettied up….in due time. Either before or after the first snow covers it all up! :8-D

How are those cantaloups – have you harvested and eaten one yet?

        1. There are a couple that should be ready within a day or two and several more coming after that. A bunch more small ones still but, since I planted late this spring, the cold may arrive too soon for some of those – hoping for a late fall. Next year, I’ll already have my ducks in a row, with the bed ready to go in early spring.

          1. A good cantaloup is awesome eating! I love to cut in half and stuff with cottage cheese or tuna or chicken salad! Those were the way they were served in the South. I mostly cut up in chunks and eat for breakfast with cottage cheese or just as a treat or dessert.

            1. I usually cut it in half, clean out the innards, put one half in a bowl and grab a spoon and salt, then go to town! Sometimes I’ll cut it into bite-size pieces and save in the fridge but they usually don’t last that long. LOL

so are your plant pots the clay ones? cuz there’s plenty of craft ideas to transform them into all kinds of garden things–like a lighthouse. and i know you LOVE crafting…LOL

        1. LOL – ISWYDT! No, I’ll keep those – most of these are plastic ones that I’ve saved thru the years from buying annuals. Some are cheap plastic decorative pots that are starting to fall apart, and a number of pots that Marilyn gave me years ago.

        1. The media – not just CBS – and all the search engines are despicable the way they portray our dearly beloved Donald Trump. The images they choose to put up on searches are intentionally ugly. Even Duck Duck Go uses the ugliest images of Trump.

  2. EXCERPT: “Christopher Steele, a former MI6 agent whose discredited Democrat-funded research contributed to the now-debunked Russia collusion probe, is promoting a fresh round of Russian hysteria. This time, he is suggesting Moscow is behind protests against immigration in Britain and that Brexit leader Nigel Farage should be investigated.

Steele asserted that there is clear Russian involvement in the anti-immigrant protests—some of which have turned violent in the wake a stabbing in Southport, England and general backlash against the pro-multicultural British immigration policy—in an echo of his spurious claims that saturated the 2016 American presidential election and helped fuel the sprawling three-year investigation of Trump and his campaign.

The former intelligence agent’s name gained notoriety across the pond in America as the source of a dossier containing allegations of Donald Trump’s ties to Russia. The former British official who headed up MI6’s Russia desk came under scrutiny for the dossier, which the FBI concluded relied upon unverified information.

The dossier was used as predicate for a U.S. probe into the Trump campaign and a years-long investigation that extended into his presidency, Just the News previously reported. That information spurred four FISA court warrants authorizing federal agents to spy on Trump’s campaign.

Steele admitted through his lawyer in a 2021 filing in British court, that the content of the infamous dossier was not “factual evidence to be used in a personal or public report or in court or anything like that,” Just the News previously reported. “It was raw intelligence to be passed on as part of a much bigger intelligence picture,” his lawyer said.

But now, Steele, who regularly appears in British television, is whipping up concerns that anti-immigrant protestors—some of which have turned violent in recent weeks—are being amplified by Russia…..”

  3. NF: The Union has too danged much money if they can waste it on such ridiculous lawfare!!!

Just The News: “The United Auto Workers Union on Tuesday announced that it had filed federal labor charges against former President Donald Trump and X platform owner Elon Musk over alleged worker intimidation.

The announcement followed the pair hosting an X space on Monday evening that Musk claimed drew more than 1 billion impressions. The union pointed to that interview, saying that “Trump and Musk had a rambling, disorganized conversation on Monday evening in front of over one million listeners in which they advocated for the illegal firing of striking workers.”

“When we say Donald Trump is a scab, this is what we mean. When we say Trump stands against everything our union stands for, this is what we mean,” UAW President Shawn Fain said.

Trump and Fain have traded barbs publicly in recent months. The union endorsed President Joe Biden, before eventually endorsing Harris. Trump has warned that union leadership is out of touch with its base and that Democratic-driven electric vehicle mandates would adversely impact the industry as a whole.”

  4. Just The News: “The Trump campaign announced on Tuesday that it had raised more than $1 million through a fundraising link attached to his X space with platform owner Elon Musk.

The former president participated in a live conversation with Musk on Monday evening in which the pair discussed campaign issues and the assassination attempt in Butler, Pa., that led Musk to back Trump’s candidacy.

The campaign on Tuesday announced the fundraising haul and further posted the interview’s viewership statistics as of 12 p.m. EST. A total of 25 million X users listened to the whole interview while total impressions exceeded 2.9 billion. The interview also boasted roughly 1.5 million listeners at any given time.

“The media can lie, but the numbers don’t: Americans are eager to hear from President Trump and his momentum is only growing as we get closer to November 5,” Trump Campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung said in a statement.

The interview was delayed due to what Musk called a Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack. The X owner has further invited Vice President Kamala Harris to participate in a similar discussion.”

  5. NF: Gee, here’s a thought: how about just going back to brown paper bags that get re-used over and over and over again before being used once again as kindling???? Recycle, you say? Well there ya’ go – recycling writ large!!!

EXCERPT: “(The Center Square) – The plastic bag industry warns California’s proposed updates to its ban on single-use plastic bags — which led to use of thicker “reusable” plastic bags at checkout — could sweep up other commonly used items such as purses and sandwich bags.

This would not be the first time the legislature misfired on a plastic bag ban. The author of the updated ban notes California’s 2016 ban actually increased overall plastic waste nearly 50% as stores switched to thicker “reusable” bags, and responded by saying the bill expressly targets only checkout bags for consumers to carry their purchases.

California’s single-use plastic shopping bag ban went into effect in 2016, but plastic bag waste increased 47% to 231,072 tons by 2022 as stores shifted to much thicker plastic bags. Bills SB 1053 and AB 2236 would close the “loophole” by banning all plastic shopping bags starting on Jan. 1, 2026, and require that paper shopping bags be made with 50% recycled paper starting on Jan. 1, 2028. Consumers could either buy paper bags at checkout, or bring their own bags under this law….”

  6. States’ rights, people!!!

Just The News: “Former President Donald Trump recently hinted that he was open to reviewing federal marijuana policy and questioned the merits of keeping people incarcerated for an offense that is now legal.

“As we legalize it, I start to agree a lot more because, you know, it’s being legalized all over the country,” Trump said during a press conference last week, according to Forbes. “Florida has something coming up. I’ll be making a statement about that fairly soon.”

Trump’s statement came in response to a reporter asking him about the Biden administration’s attempt to reclassify marijuana under federal law.

“As we legalize it throughout the country—whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing—it’s awfully hard to have people all over the jails that are in jail right now for something that’s legal,” Trump also said. “So, I think obviously there’s a lot of sentiment to doing that.”

Polling data has suggested that American are increasingly receptive to legalizing marijuana. An August poll, conducted by The Tarrance Group, showed that 79% of voters in Pennsylvania think that medical marijuana should be legal while 58% believe that recreational marijuana should be legal.

Among 18-to-44-year-old Pennsylvania voters, 74% of them say they want recreational marijuana legalized.”

Our Take: The AP is lamenting the impending death of Fani’s RICO. ‘Trump and other defendants have appealed McAfee’s ruling…the appeals court has barred McAfee from taking any further action in the case against Trump and the others…while it is pending.’

    Thoughts and prayers.

This article threw me when I first read it. ‘What’s the news?’ I wondered as I read it and re-read it and searched for other headlines. Then I realized that the anniversary of Fani’s doomed endeavor is the news. That’s hilarious — there isn’t any news about Fani’s RICO because Fani’s RICO is stalled indefinitely.

The lawfare campaign against 45 failed in spectacular fashion. The cases where The State got wins backfired as Trump became more popular. The cases billed as ‘the walls closing in’ are dismissed or stalled.

This campaign is so unsuccessful that the DOJ now has to shift resources to defend against Trump’s credible tortious abuse suit for $100M. Remember Trump’s lawyers not being able to observe? Or the staged photos? Or the rampant political leaks? It’s all ostensibly admissible evidence in this new lawsuit.

The regime failed to stop the Return of Trump, and AP News is sad enough to remind us about what could have been — but never will be — in Fulton County. Said another way, Trump has been unburdened by what has been, allowing all of us to imagine what can be. President of Precedent. What a time to be alive.

Those who took pleas in Fani’s RICO must be drowning in regret. They just keep taking L’s. — Ashe in America

A pair of proposed presidential debates could instead become town hall meetings for former President Donald Trump, his campaign confirmed with The Epoch Times on Aug. 11.

The Republican presidential nominee and his Democrat opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, have both agreed to participate in a Sept. 10 debate on ABC News. This comes despite the former president’s concerns over a conflict of interest with the network, which faces a lawsuit in which Trump alleges the network defamed him.

He is now waiting for Harris to accept two additional proposed debates – Sept. 4 on Fox News and Sept. 25 on NBC News.

If she rejects those proposals, which Trump made during an Aug. 9 news conference, Trump will appear solo on those national TV networks, a Trump campaign adviser said.

The Epoch Times has sought comment from the Harris campaign.

“I look forward to seeing Kamala at all three Debates!” Trump said in an Aug. 11 post on his social media platform, Truth Social. — The Epoch Times

  9. https://www.axios.com/2024/08/13/harris-campaign-google-poltical-ads-news-publishers

The Harris campaign has been editing news headlines and descriptions within Google search ads that make it appear as if the Guardian, Reuters, CBS News and other major publishers are on her side, Axios has found.

Why it matters: It’s a common practice in the commercial advertising world that doesn’t violate Google’s policies, but the ads mimic real news results from Search closely enough that they have news outlets caught off guard.

According to Google’s ad transparency center, the Trump campaign isn’t running these types of ads, but this technique has been used by campaigns before.

The ads say that they are sponsored, but it’s not immediately clear that the text that accompanies real news links is written by the campaigns and not by the media publication itself.

What they’re saying: “While we understand why an organization might wish to align itself with the Guardian’s trusted brand, we need to ensure it is being used appropriately and with our permission. We’ll be reaching out to Google for more information about this practice,” a Guardian spokesperson said.

Spokespeople for brands such as CNN, USA Today and NPR, whose links appeared in Harris for President ads, said they were unaware their brand was being featured this way.

Reality check: Google said the ads don’t violate its rules, but platforms have in the past wrestled with whether this type of format can spread misinformation. — Axios

  10. UPDATE – I’m going back to the Village this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon – depending on how things are going with Sally Q. Sally’s new medicine has helped her mood considerably – maybe 30% improved. She still erupts with nasty temper and disrespectfulness now and then. I’ve got a thicker skin since I have learned to expect it due to her cerebellar degeneration and am able to handle it due to the Lord’s healing of my own issues and daily and PRN prayer and devotions. The hotter the fire, the more difficult the day – the more I need GOD’s help.

Fixing to go mow the front yard only and get cleaned up. Waiting to hear from the dermatologist about a biopsy on a suspected basal cell. My Type II – English Irish skin grows benign spots and basal cell lesions really fast and I’ve been going once a month to get it cleaned up and watch for cancers. Also buying some home stuff with hydroxy acids, etc. that help remove and prevent spots and growths.

Then I need pack the sewing stuff to take back to the Village and repair a few stitches coming loose on the lift leg supports, and maybe work on the upper body support for the lift – if I get an inspiration for the design. So far, nothing has worked well for the upper body – a design will work for me, but when I try it on her – no dice!

  13. ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Look, this isn’t going to make me any friends, OK? I get that. But in a perfect world there would be some unalienable rights. Like the right to set foot on sand without being charged a beach fee. The right to not have someone set up five feet from you when the beach is wide open. And how about the right to take matters into your own hands if a rat with wings comes after your kid’s food?

A 29-year-old Cape May man was visiting North Wildwood with his little girl and presumably minding his own business trying to show his daughter a good time. The thing that seems to top every list of beach pet peeves happened. An annoying seagull aggressively swooped in and went after the little girl’s food.

These birds are often encouraged by jerks who go out of their way to feed them, turning seagulls into a highly aggressive nuisance. Shore towns have dealt with the problem for years. In Ocean City, the local government even hired a company to bring in live raptors to go after the seagulls to keep them, forgive the pun, at bay.

Now I don’t know quite how it went down but this dad, Franklin Ziegler, was having none of it when this bird came after his daughter and her French fries. No doubt the kid was scared. The father somehow got ahold of the seagull and killed it, according to authorities. Police say he decapitated it.

Authorities say Morey’s Piers workers told them the man came up to them asking for a trash bag holding the dead bird. Police were called and they say Zeigler was recorded on a body camera admitting to killing the bird when it came after his kid’s food.

He’s been charged with third-degree animal cruelty along with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

Yes, l understand we have a federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act that makes it “unlawful at any time, by any means or in any manner, to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, attempt to take, capture, or kill … any migratory bird.” There was even a man who ran afoul of this law when a seagull came after his food and he says he simply flailed his leg trying to shoo it and accidentally kicked it. He didn’t even kill it yet had to pay a hefty fine.

But is the status quo right? Should this be illegal in cases where the seagull is aggressive or even worse, there’s an entire aggressive swarm? Is there no credit given for the paternal instinct of coming to your daughter’s aid?

If they’re going to charge this man with a crime instead of giving him the medal I say he deserves in a perfect world, then they had better toughen the laws against feeding these seagulls too. Make that the same level of crime because these are the people setting this up to happen.”

    Lee Williams, Aug 14, 2024

    (Photo-illustration from licensed Shutterstock account).

EXCERPT: “In what may be the most poorly conceived and horribly researched study ever published by The Journal of the American Medical Association during its entire 141-year history, a trio of anti-gun researchers now claims deer hunting is associated with a substantial increase in firearm violence.

To arrive at their laughable conclusion, the authors used data from the infamous Gun Violence Archive, which has been debunked dozens of times and is well known for its shoddy research and biased statistics.

Even the authors admitted there were problems with the GVA data. “Our study relies on shooting data from a single source, the GVA. Data from GVA have been shown to have a bias toward incidents that receive more media attention and do not include comprehensive counts of firearm suicides,” the report states.

Despite these inherent biases, the researchers used the GVA data anyway. They didn’t allow the facts to interfere with their preconceived and biased narrative.

The report, “Deer Hunting Season and Firearm Violence in US Rural Counties,” which was released Wednesday, was written by Patrick Sharkey, PhD; Juan Camilo Cristancho, BA, and Daniel Semenza, PhD….”

Outrage at Kamala Harris as pedophile who brutally raped and murdered eight-year-old neighbor is set to go free thanks to woke California juvenile justice law VP authored

A violent pedophile who brutally raped and murdered his eight-year-old neighbor could be released from jail this fall due to a 2016 justice reform authored by Kamala Harris during her tenure as California’s Attorney General.

Adrian Jerry ‘AJ’ Gonzalez, 24, was just 15 when he lured Madyson Middleton into his mother’s apartment with promises of ice cream before strangling, stabbing and raping her.

The brutal killer then wrapped her body in plastic bags and threw it in a dumpster outside the Santa Cruz apartment complex where they both lived.

👉Now, Gonzalez is set for release when he turns 25 – a rule that applies to all offenders convicted in juvenile court in California. 😖

Prop 57 also legislated for the release of ‘non-violent offenders’ before they have finished serving their full term – which has already led to criminals who went on to kill being busted out of jail.

The loose wording saw Harris criticized during her successful 2016 Senate run, with her opponent then-Rep. Loretta Sanchez pointing out that the now Vice-President’s definition of ‘non-violent’ crimes included the rape of an unconscious person and human trafficking.

In a statement released at the time, the Democrat said: ‘The ballot title and summary, written by Attorney General Kamala Harris, calls serious violent crimes ‘non-violent,’ including crimes such as rape by intoxication of an unconscious person, human trafficking involving a sex act with minors.

‘Proposition 57 is the misleading and dangerous ballot initiative that would allow serious, violent criminals out on early release without completing their sentences.’…

    1. Ha! I had the same problem with a bunch of my sweat pants, altho my problem was that I had gained weight. Marilyn modified 5 or 6 pairs for me with drawstrings instead of the fixed elastic bands.

Bongino revealing Kellyanne Conway ran a hit job on JD Vance in Daily Mail today, saying Trump was unhappy with him.

It’s bullshit but Kellyanne and her friends are big into making a ton of money in Ukraine, JD is not.

She is sabotaging Trump’s ticket, for a shit fight to happen..
So not only does Trump have all the left against him, now he has those in his camp dividing the base.

    1. Ummm…..how wise is it to elect someone with “mental health issues?”

EXCERPT: “White was a first-round pick by the Rockets in 2012 but never played for the team after disclosing mental health issues and saying he did not want to fly to road games with the team. He signed multiple 10-day contacts with the Sacramento Kings in 2013, playing in three games, but was eventually let go before playing overseas for several years.

The 33-year-old White, who was an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness in sports, also considered a future in mixed martial arts but lost his only professional fight in 2021.”

Ah-ha! Not good – it does say he is Catholic, tho.

From Wiki: “White led several protests in the wake of the murder of George Floyd.”

  24. “Dissension, ‘Toxicity’ Plagued Trump’s Secret Service Detail Before Assassination Attempt”

By Susan Crabtree – RCP Staff, August 12, 2024

EXCERPT: “Rancor, recriminations, and serious formal misconduct complaints have plagued all levels of the Secret Service detail assigned to protect former President Donald Trump over the last year, distracting the team from its core mission of securing Trump from physical harm and preventing an assassination.

Trump’s regular detail team, a force of 60 employees – special agents and support staff – has been beset by internal division, long workdays and weeks, and constant stress. Last year, the team lost one of its members to suicide.

Among the allegations are accusations of improper sexual relationships or fraternization within the team, debilitating mental health issues, non-merit-based promotions, conflict of interest issues, unfair retaliation and the creation of inappropriate memes and social media posts.

On May 15, the top two leaders of Trump’s detail sternly dressed down the entire 60-member staff in a virtual meeting, announcing formal investigations into what they argued were serious misconduct violations, several sources in the Secret Service with direct knowledge of the online meeting tell RealClearPolitics.

Sean Curran, the detail leader and top boss of Trump’s regular 60-member protective team, and his deputy, Matthew Piant, complained of “rumors, innuendo and toxicity” among the detail, as well as “selfishness and immaturity.”

They reminded all employees that they had worked to mentor and train them, and, up to this point, had refrained from referring agents and support employees for discipline even though there had been violations that they could have reported to agency headquarters for investigation….”
