In honor of Lucille Ball’s birthday (born August 6, 1911 and died April 26, 1989), I thought we’d look at some interesting facts about her show.

There have been a lot of very important television shows since television was invented, and one of the most important and influential ones has been I Love Lucy. Even though it aired long ago, this series still has an impact on television these days.

The effects of it will probably be seen for many more years, since it was such a game-changer back then. For example, Lucille had a lot of power behind the scenes of the show. That was a groundbreaking thing since women didn’t typically have much control over television shows back then. Here are some other interesting facts about this series that fans probably didn’t already know.

Lucille Didn’t Like Desi Being On The Road

Part of the reason why audiences have been able to enjoy I Love Lucy for so long is because Lucille did not want her husband being on the road all the time. Fans might remember that Desi was part of a band in real life, and that meant that he was spending lots of time traveling, and Lucille was not a fan of that.  The actress wanted her husband to spend more time with her, so that is why she wanted him to play her husband on the series. It’s interesting to think about what the show might have looked like if she did not feel that way.

William Was Not The First Choice For Fred

William Frawley was not the first choice when it came to who was going to play Fred Mertz. Lucille actually wanted someone else to play the part, and that was Gale Gordon. Apparently, she loved the work the actor did on the radio show they starred in together, which was My Favorite Husband.  But that actor ended up asking for too much money, so he was not cast in the role. William heard that I Love Lucy was being created, so he gave Lucille a call to find out if there was a part for him. Some people who worked on the series were reluctant to hire him, but Desi believed he would be great for the role, so they met for lunch, and Desi offered him the role.

CBS Didn’t Want Desi To Play Ricky

It is hard to imagine what this show would have been like if any of the main characters had been played by different actors, but some of the creators of the show were originally not in favor of Desi being cast as Lucille’s husband, despite the fact that they were really together at the time. CBS really liked My Favorite Husband, and they wanted the man who played her husband on that show to play him on television as well.  But, Lucille would only take the role of Lucy if her actual husband was cast as Ricky. The creators didn’t think the audience was going to believe that they could ever be a couple, but history has proved them wrong.

A Dream Pushed Lucille To Take On This Role

Lucille was not sure about whether she should take on the role of Lucy Ricardo or not, but a dream is what convinced her to do it. The actress was very reluctant to join the cast of the show because she was unsure about how the transition from movies to television was going to affect her career, but then she had a dream that pushed her to do it.  In the dream, a deceased friend of hers talked to her. The friend was an actress named Carole Lombard, and if Lucille had not had that dream, television as we know it would certainly look a lot different than it does at the moment.

Vivian And William Did Not Get Along

Lots of shows have had some behind the scenes feuds between the cast members, and even I Love Lucy could not escape that since the people who played Fred and Ethel Mertz never really got along with one another. Part of the reason why they did not like one another is because William was so much older than Vivian (there was 22 years between them) and she did not think anyone would believe she was married to a man who was so much older than she was.  William didn’t have many nice things to say about her, either. He often referred to her as “that old sack of doorknobs.”

Lucille Was Not A Natural Redhead

Lucy Ricardo’s hair was one of her most famous and identifiable features, but the actress who played her was actually not a natural redhead. Another interesting fact is that her hairdresser did not just use any common hair dye to color her hair.  Someone brought the hairdresser a unique mixture that involved hair dye and henna, and that is what was used to create the iconic hair color that I Love Lucy fans are so familiar with. The distinct mixture was locked up in a safe spot when the hairdresser was not using it on the actress, since it was such an important part of her character.

Reruns Are A Thing Because Of This Show

Anyone who loves to watch reruns of their favorite shows are probably very thankful to those who created I Love Lucy. In real life, Lucille and Desi shared two children. Desi thought his wife could use a break from work when she had their second child, so that is when he came up with what audiences now know as a rerun.  The actor suggested that instead of filming new episodes for a bit, the studio could show some of the old episodes that had already proven to be really popular with the shows’ fanbase. This obviously worked out pretty well for them, since fans can still catch reruns of the series on television today.

It Was All Part Of The Script

Every line that was spoken when the show was being filmed was scripted out. That may seem pretty obvious, but there are actually lots of movies and television shows that feature some lines that the actors made up on the spot, since some unexpected things can happen on the set (there is a rumor that a certain scene in The Dark Knight is a perfect example of this).  But some people might be surprised to find out that none of the actors ever said anything that was not scripted when they were creating any of the episodes of I Love Lucy.

There Was One Thing That Only Lucy Was Allowed To Do

Lucy was the only character on the series who was allowed to make fun of Ricky’s accent. Those who have seen the series probably noticed that Ricky has a very thick accent, and they also probably noticed that the only person who ever made fun of him for it was Lucy.  When Lucy did it, the audiences seemed to think it was very funny. But when the series creators attempted to have the other characters do it, things were a bit different. The jokes were not very well-received, so the writers stopped allowing the other characters in the show to poke fun at his accent.

Nearly Everything Shut Down When New Episodes Aired

Lots of businesses closed up shop when new episodes of I Love Lucy aired. These days, there are multiple ways for people to catch episodes of their favorite television shows, even if they have already aired on television before, but things were not always like that.  Back when I Love Lucy was still being filmed, fans could only watch it when it aired live each week (except for when Desi invented the rerun), and that resulted in some businesses closing when they knew a new episode was going to air. Almost everyone loved this show, so it seems that the title was fairly appropriate.

      1. The main Village power is out right now, but Sally and I have ceiling fans, can charge her wheelchairs and lift and the microwave works. The refrigerator and stove are out. However, the power company is now at work since the storm is past. The Village is a priority with so many helpless seniors and it’s also one of the largest employers for the county.

          up here, we’re in PA, but so close to NY that our lines come from NY. so when the power goes out, we have to notify PA who then notifies NY and then NY checks their lines. if they find nothing then they notify PA it’s on their side and then they send someone out. sigh…it’s a long process

          1. No, it’s in N FL – the Advent Christian Village -https://www.acvillage.net – is on the Suwannee River west of the county seat of Suwannee County. It’s a far cry from The Villages in S FL at many levels.

      2. It was a great show. I remember the ones you mention but maybe have seen those two more recently. I knew Lucy was a Leo–strong-willed–but didn’t remember her actual birthday.
        It’s raining here and has been for two days. The eye of Betty is due to pass south of Savannah around noon today, says my brother-in-law, a Techno-wiz.

          1. Good morning, Miss Pat. The rain has been steady, with mud puddles everywhere. My shoes stay wet. My sister, uphill, fed me dinner last night and offered dinner tonight, too. I’m OK, for now, just hunkering down with Speckles indoors. Hurricanes are a part of the season, and neighbors come together to help each other clear away fallen trees and branches.     1. Morning, Pat! Really chilly and gloomy here this morning, with gray skies and 64. Wheezer was waiting when I got up at 5:15, distracted by what sounded like a mouse chewing on something. Probably in the crawl space, under the kitchen floor – adding D-Con to my list! This tuna is so bad, I can only get 2 feedings per can whereas the good tuna will feed her 4-5 times!

      I loved that show when I was a kid – I also loved the Dick Van Dyke show with Mary Tyler Moore! And I Dream of Jeanie…..

    Greg Abbott Celebrates New ‘Most Wanted’ Illegal Immigrant Arrest In Texas

    Texas Governor Greg Abbott celebrated on social media after the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested another “most wanted” illegal immigrant in Texas.

    The man was arrested in Round Rock, Texas, on July 31 after he was accused of raping a child.

    U.S. Marshals arrested 25-year-old Mexican national Fabian Toribio-Martinez, who was on Texas’ 10 Most Wanted Criminal Illegal Immigrant list, at an apartment complex.

    Toribio-Martinez is being charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and possession of a controlled substance. He was taken into custody on Wednesday by DPS Special Agents and the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and booked into the Williamson County Jail.

    Toribio-Martinez was initially arrested in April 2018 and deported from the country. He was then arrested again in 2023 for possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest after unlawfully reentering.

      Dozens of Migrants on Terrorist Watchlist Released Into US: House GOP

      U.S. Border Patrol encountered over 250 migrants who were on the terrorist watchlist over a two-year stretch, with at least 99 of them released into the country, according to a Congressional report released Monday.

      The claims have been made by the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee in a new report, which blames the Biden administration for allowing suspected terrorists from three dozen countries into the U.S.

      Nationals known to be on the terrorist watchlist came from 36 countries, including Afghanistan, Lebanon and Syria, the committee said.

      Some of those encountered by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) were able to make appointments at ports of entry using the CBP One app, despite claims by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that the app can screen for potential threats.

            with all this facial recognition software we seem to have–it seems they could deploy that against illegals. you get deported, your face is in the system. cameras at the border could quickly recognize anyone who was deported and bingo they are arrested and incarcerated.
            cameras ANYWHERE could pick these bastards up

      2. Remember the stocks of the public square? Short of killing, they exposed the offender to public humiliation for a day or two. It would be less expensive than killing, which would entail disposing of the remains. A child molester could receive his Trial By Jury of his Peers. Then we could auction him off to the country willing to pay the highest price, in gold.

    1. I don’t believe any government statistics. I just think lots of workers are finding other sources of income but not reporting it. Maybe they are illegal, immigrants, maybe not. Maybe they are old people working for Uber, or taking part time work for cash. Some people are selling their excess stuff, or getting a friend to help repair their cars.

    Following the private funding of election administration during the 2020 presidential election, most states cracked down on it by enacting laws to prevent such funding in future elections. However, many states still allow it, and CTCL is focusing on granting funds to election offices in rural counties throughout the 2024 presidential election cycle.

    CTCL announced its 2024 Rural and Nonmetro Election Infrastructure Grant Program on Friday, which makes $2.5 million of grant funding available to 20 states.

    The grant applications opened on Aug. 2 for the U.S. territories and the following states: Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Wyoming.

    Tiana Epps-Johnson, founder and executive director of CTCL, said in a statement released Friday, “Unfortunately, local election departments remain severely underfunded after Congress cut Help America Vote Act funding last year to just $55 million nationwide, which means most rural election offices don’t get regular funding from the federal government,” she said….”

    Just The News: “Former Trump attorney Jenna Ellis on Monday signed a cooperation agreement with Arizona prosecutors in a case involving an alternate elector scheme from the 2020 election.

    Ellis was among 18 defendants facing charges in connection with the effort. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced Monday that she had agreed to cooperate with the state in exchange for dropping the charges.

    “This agreement represents a significant step forward in our case. I am grateful to Ms. Ellis for her cooperation with our investigation and prosecution,” Mayes said. “Her insights are invaluable and will greatly aid the State in proving its case in court. As I stated when the initial charges were announced, I will not allow American democracy to be undermined – it is far too important. Today’s announcement is a win for the rule of law.”

    Ellis in man reached a plea agreement with Georgia prosecutors in Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s election case last year. She agreed in May to have her Colorado law license suspended for three years.

    Arizona was one of several battleground states that former President Donald Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 that ultimately saw Republicans submit an alternate slate of pro-Trump electors. Trump has not been indicted in the case, but several of his key allies, including former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who pleaded not guilty in May.

    John Eastman, the architect of the alternate elector scheme, is also a defendant. He was officially declared ineligible to practice law in California in April.”

  19. Just The News: “At least five people were killed by Tropical Storm Debby as of Monday, after the storm battered Florida and Georgia, which made landfall on Monday morning as a category one hurricane.

    The storm, which saw winds up to 80 miles per hour, is expected to continue throughout the southeast and up the coast this week. It could bring potentially catastrophic conditions, the National Hurricane Center warned. 

    The names of the people who died have not been released so far, but one death was a 13-year-old boy who died when a tree fell on his mobile home in Levy County, Florida, according to the BBC. A 12-year-old boy was killed on Sunday night in a single-vehicle crash alongside a 38-year-old woman. A 64-year-old man died after he lost control of his vehicle and plunged off a bridge near Tampa.

    A 19-year-old man also died on Monday after a tree fell on the side of his house in Georgia, according to CNN.

    Hundreds of thousands of people are without power in Florida and Georgia, and a tornado watch has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center for more than 1.5 million people as far north as coastal South Carolina. Curfews have also been ordered in certain counties in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

    “Potentially historic heavy rainfall across southeast Georgia and the coastal plain of South Carolina through Saturday morning will likely result in areas of catastrophic flooding,” the National Hurricane Center said in its forecast. “Heavy rainfall will likely result in considerable flooding impacts from portions of central and northern Florida and across portions of central and northeast North Carolina through Saturday morning.”

    The storm is expected to move offshore on Wednesday, but forecasts predict it will return on Thursday in the northern part of South Carolina, and then push into North Carolina on Friday.”

    A tale of two civilizations. If you were to forget everything you think you know about these two places— Iran and Israel—which one would seem more aligned with the Christian values of the West? Welcome to 2024, where nothing is as it seems.

    In a column published on Sunday by Israeli outlet Haaretz, entitled “If Israelis Don’t Rise Up Now, We’ll Have Nothing Left to Fight For,” Zehava Galon writes:

    “Israel is steadily becoming a pariah state. The trickle of international sanctions has become a daily occurrence. A few settlers here, an organization there; one day it’s from Spain, the next day it’s from Japan. Rather than noticing the trend, we’ve gotten used to it. We’ve forgotten that these sanctions are a privilege. They are a warning signal. They’re what was once called an “intervention” – Israel’s friends are taking it aside and explaining that the days when they were ready to pay for it are over. And since there is no tantrum like the tantrum of the privileged, Israel’s government cries “antisemitism!”

    Benzi Gopstein isn’t some strange creature dragged by its beard out of a cave in Hebron. He freely comes and goes at the Knesset, the same Knesset that bars entry to relatives of the hostages. Tzav 9 is not just a radical organization composed of pimply youths from the hilltops – its members are afforded protection by the police and the minister responsible for the police. How many times do we need to see a truck driver being beaten while police officers stand aside before this sinks in?”

    The name Benzi Gopstein should ring a bell with this audience. He is the spiritual successor to the Jewish Supremacy movement (“Kahanism”) started by Meir Kahane, who was arrested by the Shin Bet in 1980 for conspiring to blow up the Al-Asqa Mosque in Jerusalem in order to start a holy war between Israel and Islam. Kahane won a seat in the Knesset in 1984, but was boycotted by all Knesset members. The parliament later passed a law prohibiting racial supremacy platforms from holding office—a law that Bibi Netanyahu effectively repealed in 2022.

    Kahane was arrested over 62 times in Israel for extremist activity, but only served six months in jail for the Mosque plot. He was also arrested multiple times in the United States, once for conspiring to import munitions from Israel to blow up the Iraqi embassy in DC. He was given a five-year suspended prison sentence, and allowed to return to Israel.

    Kahane is descended from Rabbi Simcha Rappaport, a famous 17th-century Ukrainian rabbi who became the progenitor of a rabbinic dynasty. Because of his ancestry—his father and grandfather were both rabbis—Kahane demanded that the Soviet government allow the Refuseniks (Soviet Jews) to immigrate to Israel, which was eventually granted in 1989, resulting in an enormous influx of organized crime of Jewish gangsters (Ukrainian and Russian Mafias) to Israel that led to a very violent and public gangland war between the gangsters and Israeli police for over 20 years.

    These Refuseniks gained political power in 1995, when they first organized a party and ran for seats in the Knesset, aided by Oxford student Ron Dermer— who went on to become Netanyahu’s right-hand man, attending the recent meeting with President Trump at Mar-a-Lago. With the help of Dermer, the Refusenik’s party merged with the Likud Party in 2003.

    In 2010, Wikileaks posted cables from the US embassy in Israel expressing concern that the Israeli (Ukrainian) Mafia had seized control of [Netanyahu’s] Likud Party, after the niece of the main family’s crime boss, Inbal Gavrieli, won a seat in the Knesset as a member of the party.

    One of Kahane’s most devout followers was a physician named Baruch Goldstein, who was outraged by the signing of the Oslo Accords (the promise of a Two-State Solution) in 1993. On February 25, 1994, Goldstein walked into the Cave of the Patriarchs—a mosque in Hebron, Palestine—with an automatic weapon and opened fire on the crowd, killing 29 people. The only reason he didn’t kill more was because he was mobbed and beaten to death by the survivors in the mosque.

    Netanyahu’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir—who also served as the defense attorney for Benzi Gopstein this past January, when he faced incitement charges for his 2015 anti-Christian comments—proudly displays a portrait of Baruch Goldstein in his living room; a fact that is widely known and reported in Israel. (Goldstein’s gravesite has become a tourist destination for Jewish extremists who are adherents of Kahanism.)

    Tzav 9— the group mentioned by Zehava Galon in her column— is a Jewish terrorist organization that has been sanctioned by the US government for attacking and/or blocking the aid caravans sent by Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE to provide food and medicine to Gaza. (Videos of these attacks are all over social media.) The group is reportedly funded by NGO’s controlled by Itamar Ben-Gvir.

    So with all of this said, I ask: which government is the terrorist state, again? —

It also irritates me that soooo many people now boo-hooing over the plight of the Jewish people – where were their families during WWII when the overall population didn’t want Jews allowed here in the US, denying they were being abused in any way? That happened, too. No matter what the current situation is, it just seems like no-one’s hands are clean.

  21. Just The News: “Vice President Kamala Harris has tapped Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., to serve as her running mate, multiple news outlets have reported. While neither the campaign nor the governor have directly confirmed his selection, CNN reported that Walz had been chosen, citing “four people close to the process.”

    Walz took office in 2019 and emerged as the preferred candidate of the Democrats’ progressive wing to serve as Harris vice president, USA Today reported.

    Minnesota last backed a Republican for president in 1972, when it supported President Richard Nixon’s reelection. The state has nonetheless, however, become more competitive in recent cycles and Republicans have begun to campaign there with more fervor.

    Former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, held a joint campaign rally in late July in St. Cloud. Harris and her running mate are expected to appear at a rally in Philadelphia later on Tuesday evening.”

    Residents of Minneapolis were unavailable for comment, as most had already fled or taken cover in case Walz actually managed to become Vice President. However, Walz has received official endorsement from several prestigious entities, such as Hamas, the government of Somalia, and top Antifa leaders.

    At publishing time, Walz had also vowed to oversee the cleaning up of America’s environment just like he had overseen the cleaning out of Twin Cities Targets, Auto Zones, and pharmacies during the summer of 2020.
