Five Things

At the surprise party 2 weeks ago for my son, I learned about a new conversation starter: Five Things.  The person in the spotlight has to say 5 things that the others probably do not know about them.  For family members this can be either hard or hilarious.

I’ll start:

ONE:

I cannot throw a frisbee or hula hoop AT ALL.

TWO:

My favorite jello flavor is strawberry.

THREE:

I believe in ghosts.

FOUR:

I once wrote tips and tricks for the game Candy Crush on a website called Crushing Candies.

FIVE:

I do not own a single pair of shorts or flip flops.

So, who’s next???

  1. Morning All!
it’s one of those days. the formatting I tried with the post above got screwed up…oh well.

foggy, rainy here…and we caught the raccoon. he managed to chew or claw through the tether hubby had keeping the cage secured to the railing. he managed to move the entire trap UNDER the swing–it IS raining so now he’s out of the rain…lol

gotta make a full fledged banana run later this afternoon.

    1. Danged raccoons! Dripping with humidity here this morning and super foggy. The high winds predicted for last night never came to fruition so I put the feeders back out first thing. I did see one male Oriole yesterday.

Wheezer was waiting for her tuna and was walking between my legs, butting her head against me and rubbing on my legs while I was dishing it out. Again, she ate and ran.

Things about to heat up, I expect….

Just The News: “Senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Tehran while attending the installment of Iran’s new president, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and Hamas announced.

Haniyeh, 62, rose to become Hamas’ political chief and was one of Israel’s top targets for punishment for the October 7 massacre that killed 1,2000. No one immediately claimed responsibility for his assassination.

Iranian media reported that Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed at a Tehran home where they was staying while attending Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian’s swear-in ceremony on Tuesday.

The assassination occurred within 24 hours of an Israeli strike that killed a top Hezbollah leader in Lebanon, the latest violence to raise worries of a broader Middle Eastern war.”

  4. Just The News: “Republican Arizona Senate hopeful Kari Lake defeated former Pinal County sheriff Mark Lamb on Tuesday night, to secure the Republican nomination in that battleground state’s primaries. Lake will face Democratic nominee Rep. Ruben Gallego in November.

“Congratulations to Kari Lake on her commanding victory in tonight’s primary,” National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines said. “Arizonans must unite to defeat Ruben Gallego, one of the most radical Democrats in the country.

”Ruben Gallego will work with Kamala Harris to abolish ICE, defund the police, and pass more reckless spending that will drive prices up. Kari Lake will work with President Trump to secure the border, get crime under control, and bring down prices.”

Lake, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump last year, was declared the winner while leading Lamb 53% to 40% with two thirds of the vote counted. She previously ran for Arizona governor in 2022, but lost to Democrat Katie Hobbs.

Arizona is considered a swing state for the 2024 presidential election, where Trump will likely face Vice President Kamala Harris for the Oval Office.  Republicans are hoping to flip the vulnerable Senate seat, after Independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema announced she would not seek reelection.”

  6. Just The News: “Anita Dunn, who has long served as an adviser to President Joe Biden, will be the first person to leave the White House after Biden decided to stop seeking reelection, a source told CNN on Tuesday.

Dunn, who helped orchestrate the president’s 2020 election against former President Donald Trump, will be leaving next week to become a senior adviser at the super PAC Future Forward and Future Forward USA Action, which support Vice President Kamala Harris.

The aide was one of the people who helped prepare Biden for the presidential debate in June, and received a lot of backlash from the first family over the president’s performance. However, Biden still praised her tenure in the administration, calling her an “invaluable part” of the White House.

“She’s tough and tested, and her experience and intellect have helped us deliver historic results for the American people,” Biden said. “I deeply value her counsel and friendship and I will continue to rely on her partnership and insights as we finish the job over the next six months.”

Dunn was also reportedly left out of the conversations about Biden’s departure from the race, and was only notified shortly before he announced his decision.

“[It has been] an honor and privilege to serve in this White House,” Dunn told CNN. “I am grateful to President Biden and Vice President Harris for their leadership and giving me the opportunity to be part of what they have accomplished for the American people.”

Other aides have described Dunn as “unfailingly supportive,” a “great mentor,” and “the person who can get things done and get you answers,” according to the Washington Post. Chauncey McLean, the president of Future Forward, said Dunn was a “great asset” for their team as they work to elect Harris to the Oval Office this November.

Future Forward has committed at least $300 million to support Harris as the Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential nominee.”

  7. I would love seeing Paxton as AG, personally!

Just The News: “Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton won a $1.4 billion settlement from Meta on Tuesday as a result of the company’s “unauthorized biometric data capture from millions of Texans without informed consent,” Paxton’s office said.

Paxton’s office announced that the settlement is the largest “ever obtained from a single state action.”

He said the settlement was the result of the state’s “commitment to standing up to the world’s biggest technology companies and holding them accountable for breaking the law and violating Texans’ privacy rights.”

  8. NF: Exactly what I say to myself ever time I have to FF thru 8 of 10 commercials that are pharma-related!!! I saw an ad for a “new and better” inhaler whose purpose is to replace albuterol!! Bet that’s what my VA doctor would try to prescribe!! Not a fricking chance!!!

It is kinda funny that the drug companies now havta make longer TV and radio commercials just to comply with the side-effects mandate. Ya listen to some of ’em and wonder why anyone would ever take the drugs when the side effects are enough to kill ya anyway…

    1. we seldom watch regular tv except at mom’s. I cannot believe the AMOUNT of drug commercials there are…like there’s no food commercials–no clothing , no department stores–even walmart. just drug commercial after drug commercial.

              1. I mute it a lot and I use the DVR aspects all the time – put it on hold for 2 hours then I can FF thru the commercials and anything I’m not interested in. I also have series like Dr. Quinn and The Walton’s saved so I can watch them whenever I can’t find something interesting on the schedule. I bounce around all over the place, mostly documentaries, real-life mysteries and investigations, etc. If I see some series I think I might find interesting, I schedule it to record an episode or two, then check it later to see if I want to continue to record it. If I don’t – delete and move on. That and the net are my only entertainment.

              2. Yeah, no, been there, done that – used to crochet and then moved to latch-hook off and on for years. It’s boring for me after a while.

  9. Just The News: “The GOP-led House has quietly filed a rare intervention in Steve Bannon’s contempt of Congress case, arguing the Democrat-led House January 6 Select Committee failed in its formation to follow chamber rules – invalidating the two subpoenas it served Bannon that he ignore and ultimately put him behind bars.

The Amicus Curiae brief filed by the House General Counsel nine days ago fulfills a promise from Speaker Mike Johnson in June to intervene in the case.

Bannon, a former Trump White House political adviser, refused to answer two subpoenas from the committee, citing executive privilege. He was convicted and sentenced under two charges of contempt of Congress. The intervention of the House under Johnson, a Louisiana Republican comes as Bannon is appealing the case.

This new intervention from the House undermines the justifications of the committee’s subpoenas and potentially provides ammunition for the appeal. Bannon is serving a four month prison sentence  and calls himself a “political prisoner.”

“We’re working on filing an amicus brief with his appellate work there in his case because the January 6 committee was, we think, wrongfully constituted,” Johnson said in June. “We think the work was tainted. We think that they may have very well covered up evidence and maybe even more nefarious activities.”

You can read the amicus curiae brief below:

House of Representatives Amicus Curiae Brief.pdf

The House brief argues the select committee was improperly constituted and that neither then-Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi nor the committee leadership followed the directives of House Resolution 503, which established the committee. According to that resolution, the now GOP-led House argues, Pelosi was required to appoint 13 members to the committee, including five Republicans. However, only nine members were ever appointed.

Additionally, the House argues that according to the resolution, the committee was required to consult with its minority party ranking member before issuing a subpoena. However, the House argues that the committee never had a ranking member as defined by House rules.

The previous Congress under Pelosi argued that former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney was serving as the ranking member. However, she actually served as the Vice Chair of the Committee, which according to House Rules, constitutes a separate role.”

  10. Ernst Exposes Massive Tax Evasion at IRS, Demands an Audit of the Auditors

IRS employees owe nearly $50 million in overdue taxes

WASHINGTON – After an explosive report showed thousands of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees owe nearly $50 million in overdue taxes, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) blasted IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel for a complete lack of accountability and introduced the Audit the IRS Act, requiring annual audits of agency employees and the termination of every IRS agent who isn’t paying their taxes.

Beyond the widespread tax evasion, the Department of Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA)’s audit, conducted at the request of Senator Joni Ernst, is full of jaw-dropping pieces of information about the agency, including that it knowingly rehired individuals who committed criminal and sexual misconduct.

“The spirit of 1776 is still alive and well with a tax revolt happening right now at the most unlikely of places in Washington, the IRS,” said Ernst. “While the IRS warns, ‘tax evasion is a serious crime punishable by imprisonment, fines, and the imposition of civil penalties,’ the agency is rewarding its own tax dodgers with paychecks and lavish benefits made possible, ironically, with the taxes paid by law-abiding citizens. My legislation will create a zero-tolerance policy for tax evasion and misconduct while ensuring these IRS bureaucrats are no longer allowed to live by one set of rules and enforce another on honest, hardworking Americans.”

Ernst’s audit of the IRS revealed:

More than 5,800 IRS and contractor employees owe nearly $50 million in overdue taxes.
Despite the IRS having the authority to fire employees who willfully fail to pay taxes, just 20 of the agency’s tax cheats were terminated.
Over 500 former IRS employees with tax compliance issues or conduct and performance problems, including criminal misconduct, sexual misconduct, inability to perform duties, fighting and assault, and unauthorized access to tax return information, have been rehired by the agency and its contractors. Of these, 282 rehires had multiple previously documented conduct and performance issues.
