Weird Wednesdays: The Spite House

Today’s entry into weird architecture, is The Hollensbury Spite House in Alexandria, Virginia.  The house is the blue one in the picture.

From atlasobscura.com:

Works of architecture are often a portal into the headspace of their creators, speaking a unique language of personality, moods, and obsessions. There are few places where this more visually apparent than at Alexandria, Virginia’s squat blue spite house. The two-century-old residence was a delicious poke in the eye to contemporary neighbors and has now become a beloved part of Old Town’s historic fabric.

The man in question here was a local brickmaker and city council member, John Hollensbury. From his nearby home on Queen Street, Hollensbury had a front row seat to a chaotic alley scene of loitering ruffians and dangerous cut through traffic. By 1830 the side of his home was pockmarked from all the collisions with wagons and Hollensbury decided he’d had enough.

In the modern day, the first instinct in a similar situation might be to complain to the police, your neighborhood listserve, or perhaps pursue legal action. Hollensbury had a refreshing streak of self reliance and simply began bricking off the alleyway in question. Two parallel walls and a roof transformed the former byway into a quaint addition to his personal residence. Ripley’s Believe it or Not dubbed it the narrowest house in America.

It’s unclear if any of this was permitted or legal back in 1830. Hollensbury’s seat on the Common Council might have given him the audacity to just build it without asking permission. However, because of the glorious power of Ex Post Facto law, the spite house has been grandfathered into the modern building code, and is presently occupied part of the year. From inside the living room you can still see the spots where wagons smashed against the brick walls and incited the fury of John Hollenbury.

Also from Business Insider:

The Hollensbury Spite House was built in 1830 by John Hollensbury, who owned one of the adjacent homes. The story goes that he was tired of noise from carriages and loiterers in the alley next to his house. To put an end to noise from foot and horse traffic in the alley, he built a house in the middle of it.

“Imagine you hate the neighborhood drunks so you build a house in your alley,” one Instagram user wrote about his recent visit to the Spite House.

Today, the home is a private residence owned by Jack Sammis. Jack purchased the home for $135,000 in 1990, and he and his wife Colleen had been using the home as a pied-à-terre, the New York Times reported in 2008. They did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

Not surprisingly, the home is compact. They once rented the house to a couple who wanted to see if they could endure living in a ship’s cabin on a cruise around the world, Jack told the New York Times in 2008. The couple decided that they could after staying at the residence.

The two sides of the house are brick and still have grooves from the wagon wheels that would pass through the alley back in the day. It opens up to a walled garden that is 7 feet wide and 12 feet deep.

“I love the idea of it — that something like this can exist. It makes the world a little more magical,” Colleen told the New York Times in 2008.

The Hollensbury Spite House is one of a handful of spite houses around the world

While the Hollensbury Spite House is the most famous spite house in Old Town, it’s not the only one. There are at least three other spite houses built in the neighborhood’s historic alleyways, according to Old Town Home.

Spite houses have also been built across the world, from a London house painted to look like candy canes out of spite for her neighbors to a home in Lebanon reportedly built by a man who wanted to ruin his brother’s seafront views.

  1. Morning all! cool this morning, hazy skies.
but we got to see a rare treat this morning! a mama bear and her FOUR cubs were in eating around the pond. 3 of the cubs followed mama pretty close–one lagged behind tasting this plant and that one…LOL. we’ve named him Straggler…LOL

    1. Morning, Pat! How exciting to see 4 cubs and Mama!! Hope they don’t tear up your pond again. It’s 66 again here and humid. I’m going to try to head to Mom’s/Norfolk early so I can try and beat some of the heat. I tossed and turned all night – I’m such a hermit now that I dread going! I never went to Old Town after my initial sight-seeing days in the late ’70’s so I never saw any of these “spite” houses. It is very hard to get around in a vehicle in Old Town – you found a place to park and walked everywhere.

Wheezer was lurking on the patio near her almost-empty food dish….she didn’t even wait for me to finish mixing the tuna with the dry food that was left, digging in while I was still stirring it up.

Imagine my surprise when I opened my e-mail and saw a newsletter from Gateway Pundit! I guess I must be off their shit-list these days – wonder if I am still banned from commenting? Maybe they finally woke up about Ukraine!

It has now been confirmed, even by the mainstream media, that Joe Biden was blackmailed into dropping out of the race after top Democrats threatened to remove him from office with the 25th Amendment. The well-orchestrated “palace coup” to stop the faltering president from seeking re-election had been in place for weeks. Trump knew about it. Biden’s June debate seemed to be a “setup” by Democrats to forcibly replace him with a new candidate. Nancy Pelosi threatened Biden if he refused to drop out of the race. Nancy made clear that they could do this the easy way or the hard way. She gave them three weeks of the easy way. It was about to be the hard way. The hard way appears to have been the 25th Amendment. Biden’s own staff didn’t find out he was dropping out until they read his digitally signed letter on X. Trump tried to warn Joe Biden about the 25th Amendment all day in 2021. On January 12th, 2021, Trump said: “The 25th Amendment is of zero risk to me but will come back to haunt Biden.”

BREAKING: Trump just filed a BOMBSHELL legal complaint against Kamala Harris and the Democrat party. He says they violated federal election law when Biden laundered his campaign cash to Kamala

“Kamala Harris is seeking to perpetrate a $91.5 million dollar heist of Joe Biden’s leftover campaign cash — a brazen money grab that would constitute the single largest excessive contribution and biggest violation in the history of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, as amended”

Trump says Biden and Kamala “flagrantly violating the Act by making and receiving an excessive contribution of nearly one hundred million dollars, and for filing fraudulent forms with the Commission purporting to repurpose one candidate’s principal campaign committee for the use of another candidate.”

Chinese Billionaire Who Works To Spread CCP Influence Worldwide Is Benefiting From $208M Biden-Harris Grant

    Excerpt:

Chinese billionaire and auto industry magnate Li Shufu is a senior Chinese Communist Party member who has explicitly devoted his career to spreading Chinese influence worldwide. According to data reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon, he is also set to personally benefit from the Biden-Harris administration’s latest taxpayer-funded initiative to boost electric vehicle manufacturing…

…The taxpayer-funded action indicates that the Biden-Harris administration is broadly willing to pursue climate policies even if they indirectly benefit investors deeply enmeshed in the CCP apparatus.

  5. “Kamala Harris’ gun control schemes are no laughing matter: Harris is now the country’s highest ranking anti-gun activist.”

    LEE WILLIAMS, JUL 24, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris. (Photo from licensed Shutterstock account).

EXCERPT: “Joe Biden lied about guns, Second Amendment rights and nearly everything else so often that even his staunchest supporters stopped taking him seriously. The country’s 46th President beclowned himself with his own falsehoods.

Biden was a classic fabulist. He invented stories and assigned himself the starring role. Whether he was singlehandedly confronting hunters armed with standard-capacity mags in a Delaware swamp, exaggerating the efficacy of the 1994 federal Assault Weapon Ban or making up colonial cannon prohibitions, Biden received more Pinocchios than Disney, which is one of the reasons why he’ll be sitting in a beach chair rather than behind the Resolute Desk for the next four years.

By comparison, Kamala Harris has been much more circumspect about her anti-gun plans, and despite her maniacal cackle, could prove a more serious opponent to our Second Amendment rights than her former boss ever imagined possible.

Last year, most likely at the insistence of Barack Obama, Biden put Harris in charge of the new White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which Biden said would “centralize, accelerate, and intensify our work to save more lives more quickly.”

The Office has no website. Its budget has never been made public. Its staffing levels are not known. It operates in secret, without oversight and wields tremendous power. Only three staffers were identified. One has a long association with Obama.

Almost immediately, it became clear that the Office was an incubator and a clearinghouse for anti-gun policy that it pushed out to blue states.

In December 2023, Harris hosted a gaggle of state lawmakers at the White House to showcase the Office’s new gun-control policies. The names of the attendees were not released, nor were the details of the meetings. None of the meetings were recorded or transcribed.

After overseeing the Office, Harris’ anti-gun rhetoric has sharpened, and it is clear what she has in store for law-abiding gun owners if she replaces Biden on a permanent basis….”

  7. Strange that they didn’t update the link – meeting is on Friday now.

    https://www.reuters.com/world/trump-says-he-will-meet-with-netanyahu-wednesday-2024-07-23/

“Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday at his resort in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump said on Tuesday, a sign the two men are looking to improve ties.

“Looking forward to welcoming Bibi Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida,” the former U.S. president said in a post on Truth Social, using Netanyahu’s nickname.

The meeting will be their first since the end of Trump’s presidency, during which the two forged close ties, and comes at a time of strains also between Netanyahu and Democratic President Joe Biden over Israel’s war against Hamas militants in Gaza.

Late on Tuesday, Trump posted a letter written to him by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas from a day after the former U.S. president had been shot at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Abbas wished Trump “strength and safety,” according to the letter Trump posted. In the same post Trump also said that he looked forward to meeting Netanyahu and working toward achieving peace in the Middle East.

Netanyahu had angered Trump when he congratulated Biden on his victory over Trump in the 2020 election. Trump has falsely claimed the election was stolen from him by voter fraud.

Netanyahu had requested the in-person meeting with Trump during his visit this week to Washington, Politico said on Monday. The Israeli embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.” — Reuters

  8. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/23/biden-hur-biographer-transcripts-00170548

The Justice Department told a federal judge late Monday that it has located transcripts it previously denied having of President Joe Biden’s talks with a biographer that played a role in the recently completed criminal investigation into Biden’s handling of classified material before he became president.

In the wake of a report special counsel Robert Hur issued in February that described Biden as “a well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” the Justice Department has been swamped with Freedom of Information Act requests and lawsuits demanding access to various records related to Hur’s probe.

Some of the requests came from news outlets, while others originated with conservative groups apparently seeking to obtain information that could reinforce doubts about Biden’s mental acuity and fitness for the presidency. Nagging concerns about those issues, particularly after a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump last month, helped drive Biden’s announcement Sunday that he is dropping his bid for reelection.

It’s unclear whether his exit from the race will affect the handling of Hur’s materials by the Justice Department, which has argued that the release of audio of Biden’s interviews with Hur would violate the president’s privacy, lead to potential abuse — such as deepfakes — and deter other witnesses from agreeing to recorded interviews. Biden asserted executive privilege over the audio recordings of his interviews in a bid to head off House Republicans’ effort to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to release the recordings. — Politico

  9. Just The News: “Scores of pro-Palestinian demonstrators took over the rotunda in the Cannon House Office building on Tuesday, the day before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to address Congress.

Video footage of the protest showed demonstrators wearing shirts that read “Stop Arming Israel” and “Not in Our Name.” Banners were also displayed, reading “Jews say: stop the genocide,” and “Let Gaza Live.”

Some of the protesters became aggressive during the occupation, and attempted to barge into the offices of House members, including the office of Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee of Michigan, according to Fox News.

“Hundreds of protesters outside the office became disruptive, violently beating on the office doors, shouting loudly, and attempting to force entry into the office,” Kildee’s chief of staff told the outlet. “U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) and Sergeant at Arms responded immediately to the incident.”

Approximately 200 protesters were arrested over the incident, according to USCP, for “crowding, obstructing, or incommoding” inside of the Cannon office building, which is illegal.

“We are arresting a group that is illegally demonstrating inside the Cannon Rotunda. Demonstrations are not allowed inside the Congressional Buildings,” USCP said in a post to X. “We told the people, who legally entered, to stop or they would be arrested. They did not stop, so we are arresting them.”

The department said that as of Tuesday afternoon the rotunda was cleared of all demonstrators.

Capitol Police are currently preparing for thousands of protesters to gather outside of the Capitol complex in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, to protest the Israeli’s leader speech.”

  10. Just The News: “(The Center Square) — U.S. Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., filed a bill that would require Senate confirmation of Secret Service directors and impose a 10-year term limit.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned Tuesday, a day after a House committee grilled her over security at a Butler, Penn. event where former President Donald Trump was shot in an assassination attempt.

“President Trump’s brush with death was a Secret Service failure of epic proportions, and this mission failure must never be repeated,” Grassley said. “In light of former Director Cheatle’s resignation, Congress must now move quickly to pass our legislation and put a qualified individual at the agency’s helm.”

Cortez Masto said the bill, called the “Providing Real Oversight and Transparency to Effectively Counter Threats” or PROTECT Act, would scrutinize the Secret Service director like other federal law enforcement officers.

“The Secret Service is a critically important law enforcement agency, and it’s past time we started treating it that way,” Cortez Masto said.

The heads of the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshals Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms, U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement and Customs & Border Protection are already confirmed by the Senate, the senators said. The Secret Service has more staff than the U.S. Marshals and the ATF, according to information on the bill. The agency’s mission is protection and criminal investigation.

“The USSS employs over 3,802 special agents, 1,574 Uniformed Division officers and more than 2,680 technical professional and administrative support personnel who help carry out these two primary objectives,” according to information provided by Grassley and Cortez Masto. “However, public reports for more than a decade have noted USSS staffing shortages that may impact the agency’s protective mission.”

Cheatle gave short answers with little detail to U.S. House Oversight Committee members on Monday. She was questioned about how the shooter made it to the unoccupied roof and why Trump was allowed on stage even after authorities deemed the shooter as “suspicious.”

One man died as a result of the shooting. Trump and two others were injured.”

Just The News: “Prominent attorney Harmeet Dhillon and Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., said that former President Donald Trump should not focus on attacking Vice President Kamala Harris, but stay focused on policy. “I hope that we stick to the president using elevated rhetoric and appealing to everyone,” Dhillon said on the “Just the News, No Noise” TV show. “The attacks can come from people who know Kamala Harris.” Dhillon described Harris as someone who will say or do anything to get ahead.

Over the weekend, President Joe Biden ended his reelection campaign for 2024 and endorsed Harris. Other prominent Democratic leaders have also voiced their support for Harris.

Donalds said that it is important to focus on Harris’ record, both as a prosecutor and the fact that she was the deciding vote in the Senate for the American Rescue Plan, which contributed to high inflation. “That is squarely on the shoulders of Kamala Harris,” he said referring to the tiebreaker vote for the American Rescue Plan.

“Some people don’t know who Kamala Harris is, so you wanna really talk about her record. And her record is being the vice president to Joe Biden, which has been a disastrous presidency for the American people,” Donalds later said. “

Rowe was appointed deputy director in April 2023. He has has worked with the agency for 24-years.

Cheatle resigned after facing strong criticism from lawmakers over the assassination attempt on former President Trump.

“The Secret Service is the greatest protective service in the world, with one of the most difficult and solemn missions in government,” said Alejandro Mayorkas, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in a statement. “I have the utmost confidence in Deputy Director Rowe and the men and women of the Secret Service, who put their lives on the line every day and deserve our full support.”

I had never even met a black person (that I remembered, anyway – I know I did when I was a toddler at the racetrack w/my b-Mom) until I left home at 17.

Just to explain something for you that the regulars already know: both my birth and adopted Moms were best friends in HS and college. My birth Mom remarried – in fact, their first son was that POS Jerry, who was only about 9 mos. old when I left. I think her new hubby decided he didn’t want her other kids and she complied; I was adopted and my brother, Charlie, was sent to live with friends who lived on a farm west of town. They kept my sister with them – she was older and able to baby sit and help take care of the horses.

  13. Just The News: “Former Trump White House advisor Peter Navarro urged the United States on Tuesday to have a “smart on crime” conversation, and not be “soft on crime.”

Navarro was released from a Miami prison last week after serving a four month prison sentence for failing to comply with a Congressional subpoena. The former advisor said the country’s court system currently imposes harsher sentences than necessary for minor crimes, like drug offenses, which stem from the War on Drugs.

“The standard that we want to have when we think about the criminal justice system, which I’ve been inside of now and I understand this better, there are bad people doing bad things, but there’s good people doing bad things as well,” Navarro said in an appearance on Real America’s Voice.

“What we want to do when we send somebody to prison is we want to punish them with enough time that the punishment fits the crime. We want them to stay in that prison long enough to learn the lesson [and] not to come back … The optimal sentence will be enough to punish and deter, but no more. And the problem we have right now in the prison system is that the sentences are wildly, wildly over,” he added.

Navarro said that the longer people are in prison, the higher the chance that they will commit more crimes when they get out, because they have “fewer skills” and “get more angry.”

The former advisor said the costs of housing inmates is also high, costing approximately $60,000 a year per inmate, but that placing people on house arrest or in halfway homes reduces the costs by roughly half. Navarro said part of this high price tag is because the prison system does not always let the inmates out on time, which means their housing is continuing to cost American taxpayers.

“I don’t take any objection to punishing these people. They did bad things. They need to get punished. But once, once they’ve done their time, you don’t let them out on time,” Navarro said. “They’re not working. Their families suffer, and all of that is simply not right. It’s a system. It’s not working now, it’s pretty abstract.”

Navarro urged Congress to work on prison and criminal justice reform, and called on Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters to enforce the Trump administration’s First Step Act that was passed in 2018.

“That’s her choice. Collette Peters, if she doesn’t want to do that, she should resign. If she doesn’t want to resign, then Congress should impeach her,” the former advisor added.”

This is probably the most ridiculous notion out there. If you say Kackler is a DEI hire, that is akin to calling her a N____!
FJB specifically said he wanted a black woman as his VP. That equates to every rationale behind DEI. He said the same about nominating a Supreme Court Justice. In both instances he did not say he wanted the most competent and capable. The only qualifications he wanted were Female and Black – that is DEI in a nutshell. So did FJB call her that nasty N word by saying the only qualifications he was looking for were black and female?

“Dem Rep. Maxwell Frost Says Calling Kamala Harris a DEI Hire Like Using The N-Word (VIDEO)”
    Excerpts:

Appearing on CNN’s Newsroom with Jim Acosta, Frost made the case for Harris’s selection as the Democratic Party nominee despite having no real mandate to do so.
    He explained:

He is going to continue to use all these racist dog whistles throughout the campaign. We’re going to see it from Trump. We’re going to see it from J.D. Vance. So we’re going to see it from a lot of their surrogates. In fact, just yesterday, one of the surrogates was saying if we don’t win, we’re going to have to have a civil war to get our agenda through– a civil war.

So this is an organization. This is a right-wing campaign that’s going to be racist, misogynistic against the vice president, but we’re going to stand on the issues. And what really matters is the fact that she is qualified.

Jimmy Carter has passed away. He passed away knowing that he will not go down in history as the worst US President ever. Biden took care of that for him.

(looking for more corroboration on this)

          1. The only thing I can find that makes that claim is an obscure site I’ve never heard of called The Politics Watcher – it claims to be legitimate and not satire – but it’s dated May 2023, claiming he died not long after going into hospice care, which we know isn’t true.

            1. Thanks for checking. It takes awhile for genuine news to make its way through all the filters. I figure Jimmy’s extended family will eventually make some official statement. For now, they deserve some time to themselves.

Harris championed the administration’s record of policy blunders on Monday in her first appearance since jumping into the Democrat primary race.

“Joe Biden’s legacy of accomplishment over the past three years is unmatched in modern history,” she claimed, asking people to clap. “In one term — he has already — yes, you may clap. In one term, he has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who have served two terms in office.”

Below are 17 examples of Harris’ far-left record:

    1. Co-sponsored legislation to protect illegal immigrants from deportation
    2. Backed Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All legislation
    3. Backed banning private health insurance
    4. Supported giving taxpayer-funded coverage to illegal immigrants
    5. Supported banning fracking
    6. Backed defunding the police
    7. Compared ICE to the KKK
    8. Wanted to ban plastic straws
    9. Defended banning offshore drilling
    10. Wanted to “undo” the Trump administration’s border security, taking 94 executive actions in their first 100 days to rescind nealy every Trump-era measure
    11. Supported decriminalizing illegal border crossings
    12. Said she wouldn’t “treat” illegal aliens as “criminals”
    13. Called for “starting [ICE] from scratch”
    14. Argued that temporarily closing the border violated federal law
    15. Raised money for the Minnesota Freedom Fund, a far-left organization that pays to bail out of jail violent criminals, including accused murderers and rapists.
    16. Supported Los Angeles’s cuts to their police department
    17. Called efforts to add more police to the streets “wrongheaded thinking

  18. Well then…..it’s been a day. I called Mom when I left town to let her know I was on the way. When she answered, I could hardly understand her – speech was garbled and I was afraid she’d had a stroke. But after a couple of minutes, I understood that she was at the ER because her tongue had swelled up so badly she couldn’t even close her mouth. I said I would come to the hospital and she said what sounded like “Well, Julie is with me….” I thought she was talking about my sister-in-law who was married to my brother, Charlie, who died so I said ok, let me know how things are going.

I then called my Sis and she wasn’t aware of it so she called Julie, who was at home and knew nothing about it so I said, ok, then I’m going to the hospital. Then Sis told me that my asshole half-brother from NC, Jerry, was going with our nephew, Chris. No-one even knew he was here and he wasn’t even going to tell Mom he was here until her BD on Friday! I considered not going but said screw them, I’m going! I was hoping I could get there before they did, then leave when they arrived. But they were already there….damn! I should have known: my brother’s farm that Chris inherited is only about a half-mile from the hospital.

Turns out it was an allergic reaction to her BP medicine – it is quite common for this to happen if someone has been on it for a year or more. I told Mom her doctor should have warned her about it! Of course, she had driven herself to the hospital. SMH – I looked at Chris & Jerry briefly, said “hey” and turned to Mom: “Two days, Mom! You only have 2 days before your birthday and you couldn’t wait until after that???” She laughed (as I knew she would) and asswipe Jerry actually had the fricking audacity to come over and give me a hug, saying “Hi Sis!” Fuck him! He has never really considered me to be a sister!!! He is the one, along with my other half-bro, Jeff in KY, who stopped us from getting her on the Dr. Zelenko protocol when she first got COVID.

Jerry asked if there was anything she needed at her apartment and she was telling him but I told her that I was going to get the trellis anyway. So I took care of a few things for her – turn off the coffee pot (which wasn’t on), get her books, and clean the litter box – I also turned off the light in her bedroom. I should have known he would be orange – she has always loved orange cats – and his name was Charlie – when she saw that, she knew she had to have him. Friendly fat ball of a cat! Then I took the books to her and we talked for a while. She has some albuterol inhalers so she’s going to give me a couple.

I did pick up the Primatene Mist – we’ll see if that helps – but dang, it’s expensive – over $30!!! Ran to Menards and cashed in most of my rebate check on WP blocks – I got 12 of them so that should last thru the summer at least. Then on to WM – I got my cart all loaded and was at the self-checkout register when I realized I’d left my wallet in the truck. It’s been THAT kind of a day!!!

      1. They gave her whatever is normal to counteract it and she was fine, altho it was still slightly swollen and her speech was still hard to understand but it was worse because she didn’t have her dentures. They are only keeping her for a while because of her age. I expect if all goes well, she will be home tomorrow.

      2. LOL – she’s something! She told me she wants to go to the bar on her BD to have a “couple of beers.” She only drinks fake beer these days (complaining about the taste the whole time, mind you!) but I expect the whole bar will be partying with her – the owner is almost like a son to her.

  20. Oh, it’s sooo nice to have coffee again! I’ve been out for several days – and I splurged and got the Caramel Macchiato creamer this time! Yum! And the Yoplait yogurt was cheaper than the WM brand this time – it’s usually the opposite!

This focus group of Wisconsin women was just brutal for Kamala Harris. Elise Jordan asks when there will be a woman president ‘When there is a competent one’: Elise Jordan: “How do you perceive VP Harris compared to President Biden in terms of competency and experience?” Focus Group: “I think she’s worse.” “She doesn’t even know what’s going on at the border. That’s what she was supposed to be doing.” Elise Jordan: “Is there anyone that Kamala Harris could appoint as her VP that you would find reassuring?” Focus Group: “I would never consider voting for her. I would consider RFK Jr way before voting for her.” Elise Jordan: “When do you think America will have a female president?” Focus Group: “When there is a competent one.” “I don’t get a good feel for her.” “I think she’s an idiot.” Elise Jordan: “Why do you think she’s not that bright?” Focus Group: “Because she hasn’t done anything in the time that she’s had. She’s not real smart.” When average women in Wisconsin look at Kamala Harris they don’t think ‘Future 1st Female President of the United States’ they think ‘Idiot’.

I watered the plants in front and went over my lope vines again, re-directing, snipping, re-arranging….lookin’ good!!! I’ll cool off a bit before I hit the plants in back. Haven’t seen Wheezer but she was here while I was gone since some of the food is gone.

“U.S. Pushed Countries to Weaken Baby Formula Regulations, Documents Show” — The Biden administration has quietly pushed more than a half-dozen countries to weaken, delay or rethink baby formula regulations aimed at protecting the public’s health — sometimes after manufacturers complained, a ProPublica investigation has found.

EXCERPT: “The Biden administration has quietly pushed more than a half-dozen countries to weaken, delay or rethink baby formula regulations aimed at protecting the public’s health — sometimes after manufacturers complained, a ProPublica investigation has found.

In the European Union (EU), the U.S. opposed an effort to reduce lead levels in baby formula. In Taiwan, it sought to alter labeling that highlighted the health benefits of breastfeeding. And in Colombia, it questioned an attempt to limit microbiological contaminants — the very problem that shut down a manufacturing plant in Michigan in 2022, leading to a widespread formula shortage.

“Infant formula companies want to sell more infant formula,” said Marion Nestle, professor emerita of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. “The idea that governments are aiding and abetting them in their commercial enterprise over the public health interest is really shocking to me.”

The interference, documented in trade letters sent during President Joe Biden’s first two years, represents the latest chapter in the federal government’s long-running support for the multibillion-dollar formula industry, even as the Biden administration has publicly promised a different approach.

As ProPublica reported earlier this year, the U.S. has long used its diplomatic and political muscle to advance the interests of companies like Abbott, which makes Similac, and Mead Johnson, maker of Enfamil, while thwarting the efforts of developing countries to safeguard the health of their youngest children….”
