Indiana State Flower: Peony

The peony is a true showstopper, flaunting large, lush blooms with delicate petals that come in an array of colors, including white, pink, red, and even purple. These captivating flowers can grow up to 10 inches in diameter, making them an irresistible sight in any garden.  Peonies are also known for their intoxicating fragrance, which varies from soft and sweet to rich and spicy.

Varieties and Colors

Did you know there are over 30 species and thousands of cultivars of peonies? Some of the most popular types include:

Tree peonies — they develop woody stems

Herbaceous peonies — they die back to the ground each winter

There are also intersectional peonies, a hybrid of the two, boasting the best features of both. With so many varieties, there’s a perfect peony for everyone!

Designation in 1957

The peony’s coronation as Indiana’s state flower happened in 1957, thanks to the dedicated efforts of flower enthusiasts and lawmakers. The Indiana General Assembly passed a bill that year, declaring the peony the new state flower, and it’s been a beloved symbol ever since.

Replacement of the Original State Flower

You might be surprised to learn that the peony wasn’t always Indiana’s floral emblem. In fact, the original state flower was the zinnia, which was designated in 1931. But over time, the people of Indiana decided that the peony was a more fitting symbol of their state, leading to the change in 1957. Now, the peony stands proud as Indiana’s official state flower, capturing the hearts of Hoosiers and visitors alike.

The Symbolism of the Peony

It’s not just the peony’s beauty and fragrance that make it so special. This flower also carries deep symbolism that resonates with the people of Indiana. So, let’s explore the rich meanings and connections that have helped the peony become such an enduring symbol of the Hoosier State.

Significance in Indiana’s History and Culture

Throughout history, the peony has been associated with positive qualities like prosperity, honor, and good fortune. In Indiana, these qualities reflect the state’s heritage and the hardworking nature of its people. The peony’s lush blooms are also reminiscent of the fertile lands and agricultural roots of Indiana, which contribute to the state’s identity.

Connection to Indiana’s Values and Identity

The peony’s stunning beauty and resilience echo the spirit of Indiana, a state that cherishes its natural beauty and the strength of its people. As the peony thrives in Indiana’s climate, it serves as a symbol of the state’s ability to overcome challenges and flourish. The flower’s diverse colors and varieties also represent the unity and diversity of Indiana’s communities, making the peony a fitting emblem of the state’s values and identity.

    1. Morning, Pat! It’s cloudy so far, with low-lying fog – really humid and 61. Wheezer was hunkered down near the exterior patio door, where she could see movement thru the doggie door. After getting my coffee going, I saw that she was gone and stepped out to check the skies; she immediately came back thru the doggie door, stepped up to the level where her food was, then stood and looked up at me, like “Well? Are you going to go inside so I can eat or what???” OK then! I came inside and she commenced to eating. SMH

Washington is in the middle of a major hostage negotiation tonight, after Joe Biden took his entire party captive. Top Democrats on intel, judiciary and armed services committees are calling for Biden’s head but this morning he sent Democrats a ransom letter with a list of demands. He told them they have no option and if they lose, they lose with him. Like all hostage negotiations, a family member was brought in to talk the hostage taker down, but instead of being talked down, we got a deranged Biden today yelling about the very elites that put him into office. The president knows what a coup looks like and he’s left his fate up to the Lord Almighty. But in politics there’s something more powerful than that and that’s the almighty dollar. Just like Biden can’t win without Big Intel, he can’t win without donors. Top Hollywood Biden donors suddenly can’t find their wallets, saying they feel deceived by Biden. Now Biden’s trying to do something he’s never done before: win the election without help. Democrats who disobey orders from the elites never last long. Biden’s trying to mimic Trump in 2016, who ran without establishment support. The difference is that Biden needs special shoes, short stairs and cheat sheets. Now it’s Dr. Jill and Hunter Biden in charge, whispering in Joe’s ear that he has to stay in the race. Why? Because the Biden family legacy is on the line- politically and financially. We’re dealing with a dysfunctional family that always puts themselves above the country. And now Biden’s caught in a finger trap- the more he pulls, the tighter the elites are going to squeeze him.

Federal Judge Declares Ohio’s Photo ID Election Law Constitutional

A federal judge has ruled that Ohio’s strict voter ID law, which includes a photo provision, is constitutional and has rejected a challenge to it.

The ruling tossed out a complaint filed by a Democratic law firm challenging provisions including a photo ID, “drop box restrictions, and tightened deadlines related to absentee and provisional ballots.”

In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Donald Nugent, a Clinton appointee, found that the Ohio photo ID requirement, in particular, “imposes no more than a minimal burden, if any, for the vast majority of voters.”

The report added: “Nugent also rejected the other claims asserted by the Elias Law Group, whose suit filed last year on behalf of groups representing military veterans, teachers, retirees, and the homeless argued the law imposed ‘needless and discriminatory burdens’ on the right to vote.

  5. “New Orleans labels police station as a school to create massive gun-free zone: Violators face up to five years at hard labor in a Louisiana state prison.”

    LEE WILLIAMS, JUL 09, 2024

    (Photo-illustration from licensed Shutterstock account).

EXCERPT: “After New Orleans officials were unsuccessful in their attempts to get state lawmakers to designate vast swathes of their city’s popular tourist area as a gun-free zone before Louisiana’s new permitless carry law went live July 4, they came up with their own solution, which is probably unconstitutional, definitely whacky and certain to be contested in court.

The New Orleans Police Department has designated their Eighth District police station — which is located in the middle of the French Quarter — as a vocational technical school. In other words, they turned a working police station into a vo-tech. Now, everything within a 1,000-foot radius of the “school” is a gun-free zone, including more than five blocks of Bourbon Street, an international tourist destination.

It is a felony in Louisiana to violate a gun-free zone, which is punishable by up to five years in a state prison at hard labor.

Who will actually attend classes at the new “school” is not known. New Orleans Police recruits are trained at the police academy, which is located at a different facility. However, city and police officials now claim some of the recruits may take at least one class in a small room at the new “vo-tech.” There are no classes planned for civilian students.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill balked at the city’s move, warning officials they could face civil rights lawsuits because of their “made-up designation.”

“I’m working hard to help keep New Orleans safe, but the City cannot avoid state law by unilaterally designating police stations ‘vo-tech locations.’ You cannot just ‘designate’ yourself a vo-tech school. Among other implications, if it was one (it’s not) the police department would be under the jurisdiction of a board of supervisors for higher education, and it would be subject to other oversight requirements. I have no specific plans yet but would caution the NOPD that it will likely be subject to civil rights lawsuits under Section 1983 of the Civil Rights Act if it arrests people pursuant to its made-up designation, which is clearly not legal or effective. I certainly hope the NOPD isn’t violating people’s rights by making up their own rules, which is why the Department is under a federal consent decree,” Murrill said in a statement posted on social media.

“Schools have classrooms, not booking rooms,” Murrill said in another post.

    Previous civil rights abuse

Law-abiding gun owners should use extreme caution until the Bourbon Street gun-free zone can be overturned, because NOPD officers have a history of aggressively targeting concealed carriers, including tourists. In fact, the NOPD has an abysmal record of infringing upon the Second Amendment.

After Hurricane Katrina devastated large portions of the city, NOPD officers went door-to-door confiscating legally owned firearms from city residents — in complete contravention of the Second, Fourth and Fifth Amendments. Years later, after the courts ordered the weapons returned to their owners, it was learned most were improperly stored and were allowed to rust into dust….”

  6. more bureaucracy is NEVER the answer. medicare advantage creates diagnoses that aren’t correct and bills the gov’t.
    FTA
Medicare Advantage, the $450-billion-a-year system in which private insurers oversee Medicare benefits, grew out of the idea that the private sector could provide healthcare more economically. It has swelled over the last two decades to cover more than half of the 67 million seniors and disabled people on Medicare.
Instead of saving taxpayers money, Medicare Advantage has added tens of billions of dollars in costs, researchers and some government officials have said. One reason is that insurers can add diagnoses to ones that patients’ own doctors submit. Medicare gave insurers that option so they could catch conditions that doctors neglected to record. The Journal’s analysis, however, found many diagnoses were added for which patients received no treatment, or that contradicted their doctors’ views.
Insurers added diabetic cataract diagnoses to many patients treated by Goodyear, Ariz., ophthalmologist Dr. Howard Chen. Photo: Rebecca Noble for The Wall Street Journal
The insurers make new diagnoses after reviewing medical charts, sometimes using artificial intelligence, and sending nurses to visit patients in their homes. They pay doctors for access to patient records, and reward patients who agree to home visits with gift cards and other financial benefits.
Insurers added diabetic cataract diagnoses to 148 patients treated by Dr. Howard Chen, an ophthalmologist in Goodyear, Ariz. He said he saw at most one or two such cases a year.
He said he charges insurers $40 per patient to cover his costs for providing them with medical charts.
“If they are just making stuff up, then why do they even need or want my charts?” said Chen.
In all, Medicare paid insurers about $50 billion for diagnoses added just by insurers in the three years ending in 2021, the Journal’s analysis showed.

    1. People don’t realize how insurers have absorbed the practice of health care, even more than Pharma has. Medicare was added to Social Security (originally an FDR program), but added by LBJ in the mid-1960s in his infamous “guns and butter” initiative to provide increased social spending, as well as to continue the Vietnam war.

The VA used to provide direct services to veterans, but even the VA has been taken over by Tricare.

      1. I’m not under the current “plan,” so to speak. Everyone’s level of benefits depends on the timeframe in which they served. When I went into the service, I entered the Women’s Army Corps, NOT the Regular Army, and I get the benefits that I signed up for in the contract I signed with them, no matter how the benefit levels are changed thru the years. I believe it is managed by a private company, tho.

The Community Care plan instituted by Trump benefited me a LOT!!! Since the Norfolk VA office is within a certain # of miles of Omaha, I had to go there for anything more than simple basics. The CC bill opened it up so I could use doctors close by instead.

I have all free health care overall, including prescriptions and eye glasses, all inclusive with the exception of voluntary surgery (like plastic surgery), pregnancy, and dental care. I believe it is still the case that dental is normally not covered either unless it is caused by a service-related injury or illness. There is a provision, however, which I benefited from, that will allow dental work if it is affecting the overall health significantly, as it was in my case.

        1. That’s helpful to know. I’m sure many are confused. Since I first worked in a VA in Florida in 1991, VA policy has changed a lot, even before Tricare. Back then, there were few women, and the prevailing diagnosis for psych patients was PTSD in Vietnam vets.
Later, VA policy changed, or vets became savvier, because they were periodically reviewed to maintain their service-connected status. There was a lot of acting out, like psychotic episodes, to prevent their monthly check from being cut. Hard to know what the real truth was.

  7. EXCERPT: “The Interior Department last Friday blocked 28 million acres of federal land in the state of Alaska from any mining or oil and gas development.

Rick Whitbeck, Alaska state director for Power The Future, said the decision on D-1 lands removes an area the size of the state of Pennsylvania from resource development, which will have severe energy impact to the nation and the state of Alaska.

“Today’s double-whammy attack on Alaska’s resource development opportunities makes 65 times the Biden administration has targeted our state’s energy and economic future. This administration has completely kowtowed to radical environmentalists in an effort to gain favor at the ballot box. Placing 28 million acres off-limits to responsible development is foolhardy, and only empowers China, Russia and other enemies of our Republic,” Whitbeck told Just the News

In a separate decision, the department also blocked a 211-mile gravel road that would have connected mining districts in west-central Alaska to a highway that runs through the middle of the state. The mines are rich in copper and cobalt needed for the so-called green energy transition.

Former President Donald Trump had approved the permit to build the road in 2020, but after Joe Biden was elected, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland ordered a new analysis, arguing that the Trump-era studies had been inadequate….”

Expect to hear very little about the shooting in Kentucky from this week. Here’s why: 7 people were shot and it appears this was only possible because a left wing Judge named Kathleen Lape gave a child rapist probation and no jail time. The shooter is reportedly Chase Garvey. He’s a convicted child rapist who once lured a 13 year old from Snapchat to rape her. Left wing Judge Kathleen Lape gave him only 5 years of probation. It gets even worse though because she had a second chance to jail him. Chase violated probation and she still only gave him 30 days in county jail when she could have given him a 5 year sentence. He should have been sentenced to much worse than that from the start but even just enforcing his full 5 year jail sentence for violating probation would’ve saved 7 people from being shot and 4 people wouldn’t be dead right now. Soft on crime judges get people killed. I doubt the media will tell the truth about this. Oh and by the way, he’s a felon so he shouldn’t have had a gun either but like most criminals, he didn’t comply with gun laws.

PARIS — With the world’s top athletes gathering in Paris in the coming weeks, excitement among media and spectators alike continued to build around the globe for the first Olympic Games to be held in a Muslim country.

While the city of Paris had previously hosted the Olympic Games in 1900 and 1924, this year’s Games of the XXXIII Olympiad will mark the historic first time that the storied athletic contests took place in an Islamic nation.

“We couldn’t be more excited and also terrified,” said International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach. “This is a tremendous milestone for the Olympic Games, and we are honored to have them taking place in a Muslim country for the very first time. The beautiful architecture, the vibrant culture, the constant threat of violent knife attacks and mass murder… it all makes for a wonderful experience here.”

The best athletes in the summer events from nations around the world also expressed eagerness to participate in the historic occasion. “It really is special,” said Swedish female pole vaulter Hjördis Hjertsson. “I’ve been here in Paris for three days so far and I haven’t been assaulted. Hopefully, I can survive until I can compete in my event. Fingers crossed!”

With just over two weeks until the opening ceremonies, authorities reported only eight mass stabbings, 30 assaults on Jews and Christians, and 264 sexual assaults in the last month leading up to the games.

At publishing time, the IOC was preparing to officially inform the athletes that all females would be required to compete in burqas.

    POLITICS · Jul 8, 2024 · BabylonBee.com

    Article Image

WASHINGTON D.C. — Panic erupted today at a press conference when President Biden turned an alarming shade of blue after handlers accidentally left out the “remember to breathe” card from his instruction packet.

After quickly expelling all the air from his lungs in a rambling and incomprehensible sentence, The President was left with no air in his lungs as he stood frozen, flipping back and forth between his “blink” and “don’t poop your pants” notecards, where the “remember to breathe” card should have been.

“It’s really a pretty normal thing,” said an anonymous White House staffer. “I’m pretty sure every president has cards telling him to breathe and what to do minute-by-minute for every event. There’s really nothing to see here.”

Luckily, aides snapped to action to shut down the press conference and whisk Biden away so Dr. Jill could tell him to breathe before he passed out. Upon investigation, the missing notecard was located on the coffee table in the Oval Office next to some lines of white powder. The White House said they are currently looking for a black staffer to fire for the mixup.

At publishing time, Joe Biden was reported to be in stable condition and had returned to his more recent shade of orange. Karine Jean-Pierre said the White House was overall very pleased with the press conference and noted that, at 19 seconds, it was one of the longest Biden had given in months.

    @TheLastRefuge2
They are not “importing democrat voters.” They are importing people, names, that allows the state fraud process to generate ballots.

    This is an important distinction.

The migrants will not use the ballots. The DNC harvesters will collect them, fill them out (Obama), then the Precinct workers will scan them and count them (Clyburn).

Illegals don’t need to vote. They only need to exist to create a ballot.

I was finally able to remove the cage from the last one I planted and re-directed the vines towards the trellis at least – not quite long enough but it won’t be but a few days. That one got planted further away from the trellis. They’re now predicting up to 10 days of mostly or completely sunny days, with temps in the low 90’s – perfect for cantaloupe! They love the sun and the heat.

“The Democrats are having an existential crisis. The Party has split into two factions. There is the pro-Biden camp, and those who want to go to a new candidate.

Regardless of which avenue they take, the disunity and incompetence displayed by the Dems, might be insurmountable. Even if they swap Joe out, it’s so late in the process, they won’t be able to run an effective campaign. Also moving off of Joe will be a MASSIVE defeat, because it proves Trump was right, and proves they lied…

But sticking with Joe will also be a massive defeat, because half the party and the media have already bailed on Joe, telling him to step down. The Dems are in disarray, the media are conflicted, and their voters are left disappointed and confused. They could not have played this any worse.”

  19. Just The News: “Former Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley released her delegates on Tuesday from their obligation of supporting her at the Republican National Convention (RNC), in order to unite around former President Donald Trump as the nominee.

Haley won 97 delegates during the Republican presidential primaries, while Trump has won more than 2,000. The former South Carolina governor suspended her campaign in March. Haley will not be at the convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, next week but has vowed to support Trump over President Joe Biden this November.

“The nominating convention is a time for Republican unity. Joe Biden is not competent to serve a second term and Kamala Harris would be a disaster for America,” Haley said in a statement reported by The Hill. “We need a president who will hold our enemies to account, secure our border, cut our debt, and get our economy back on track. I encourage my delegates to support Donald Trump next week in Milwaukee.”

Although Haley has thrown her support behind Trump, Biden’s campaign has attempted to woo some of her “Never-Trump” voters, despite their continued support for Haley.

“There is a place in our coalition for Americans who care about the future of our democracy, standing strong with our allies against foreign adversaries, and working across the aisle to get things done for the American people,” Biden’s campaign spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg said in a statement. “[Including for those] who also reject the chaos, division and violence that Donald Trump embodies.”

The Republican convention will be held at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee from July 15 through July 18, where Trump is expected to announce his running mate. Haley is not on the shortlist for Trump’s vice president.”
