Ugliest Dog Day

June 20th is National Ugliest Dog Day and I wanted to find out more about the “holiday”.  I found an article on National Today website that details all sorts of interesting facts about the day.

From their site:

Ugliest Dog Day on June 20 celebrates the pups out there with a face only a mother could love. But when it comes to man’s best friend, is there really any dog that can’t be deemed adorable? We honor the facially challenged ones on June 20, Ugliest Dog Day. What started as a fun contest has grown into an annual celebration of the not-so-handsome dogs amongst us. So grab your favorite pup and give him an extra snuggle today and as you go about your day, say hi to every pup, pretty and not so pretty.

History of Ugliest Dog Day

No matter how they look, the antics of furry animals will always be undeniably cute. There are some really unphotogenic pets out there, but hey, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This is why World’s Ugliest Dog Day is celebrated on June 20 every year. We love to love dogs every day, but dogs with facial deformities or less attractive features are in the spotlight today. Whether they lack fur or adorable faces, those puppy eyes will always get us!

The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest is an annual contest held in Petaluma, California, as part of the Sonoma-Marin Fair, to decide which of the dogs entered in the contest is the ugliest. The winner receives a trophy and the title of ‘The World’s Ugliest Dog,’ and the dog’s owner receives $1,000 in prize money. Since 2017, the prize money has increased to $1,600, along with a free trip to New York City.

Throughout the years, many dogs have participated to claim the esteemed title of ‘The World’s Ugliest Dog,’ with one breed, in particular, winning the most titles; the Chinese Crested. Since the inception of the contest in the 1970s, the most unsightly dog has been from this breed at least 22 times. With a hairless body and bulging eyes, the breed is still beloved and described by the American Kennel Club as an “ultra-affectionate companion dog.”

With social media full of content featuring cute fluffy animals with shares and likes stacked up, Ugliest Dog Days recognizes the not-so-cute lot and makes owners beam with pride for their unattractive pets.

It brings awareness to homeless pets

Unfortunately, dogs that may be considered not so cute often have a harder time being adopted. Remember your local pet shelter on Ugliest Dog Day with a donation of money or pet supplies.

It’s a chance to brag about your fabulous dog

Cute and cuddly or unappealing and smelly, dog owners aren’t bothered and truly believe their dog is the best ever. Show-off your dog and give Fido some extra loving today with a special day devoted just to the two of you.

High-profile New York lawyer says he tried to advise judge in Trump civil fraud case
The New York State Rules of Judicial Conduct state that “a judge shall not initiate, permit, or consider ex parte communications, or consider other communications made to the judge outside the presence of the parties or their lawyers.” The rules do allow an exception to “obtain the advice of a disinterested expert,” if a judge gives notice to the parties in the case and gives them the opportunity to respond.

  8. SMDH – this is REALLY getting tiresome!!!

Just The News: “Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg dropped charges on Thursday against most of the Columbia University protesters who were arrested for trespassing in Hamilton Hall in April.

Nearly 50 people were charged with criminal trespassing after they staged a multi-day protest on the Manhattan campus of the Ivy League school. But 31 of those cases were dismissed on Thursday due to a lack of evidence, according to NBC News. Prosecutors said another 14 of the 46 cases will be dismissed if the defendants do not have any other arrests in the next six months.

The court said the person who will remain charged is James Carlson, who has two other separate cases opened against him. One of those charges is flag burning, and he is not associated with Columbia University.

Hundreds of protesters initially engaged in the protests, which was centered on the U.S. response to the war in Israel. But the 46 who were charged had illegally occupied Hamilton Hall towards the end of the protest, despite warnings that they were trespassing. Of the 46 charged, at least 14 were undergraduate students at Columbia, nine were graduate students, and two were employees.

Six of the others arrested were part of affiliated schools, and at least 13 of the rest were not affiliated with Columbia.

Prosecutors on Thursday said that those whose cases were dismissed did not have any criminal history, and those affiliated with the university, would be punished by the school. A Columbia University official confirmed that there would be consequences, but said the disciplinary process is still ongoing.

The cases were largely dismissed due to a lack of evidence, because security cameras were covered up inside of Hamilton Hall.”

  9. well there’s another case with judicial impropriety…

Attorneys for former President Donald Trump filed a motion on Thursday for New York Judge Arthur Engoron, who oversaw Trump’s civil fraud trial, to recuse himself after a lawyer allegedly offered the judge unsolicited advice on the Trump trial.

Engoron ruled against Trump in his civil fraud trial in February, and ordered the former president to pay $355 million in penalties, plus interest, as part of New York Attorney General Letitia James’s civil fraud case against him.

Trump attorneys Alina Habba and Clifford Robert called for his recusal in a 24-page motion, after lawyer Adam Leitman Bailey told NBC-4 that he spoke with Engoron about the case. But Bailey never mentioned Trump by name, according to The Hill.

“Allegations have surfaced revealing this Court may have engaged in actions fundamentally incompatible with the responsibilities attendant to donning the black robe and sitting in judgment,” the attorneys said in the motion.

The conversation reportedly took place in February, a couple of weeks before Engoron handed down his verdict.

“I saw him in the corner [at the courthouse] and I told my client, ‘I need to go.’ And I walked over and we started talking. … I wanted him to know what I think and why … I really want him to get it right,” Bailey told NBC New York in February.

A spokesperson for the New York State’s Office of Court Administration has denied that the conversation between Bailey and Engoron influenced the judge’s final decision in the civil fraud case.

The allegations that Engoron acted unethically in speaking to an outside lawyer about the Trump case has prompted an investigation by the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct, NBC New York reported, citing anonymous sources. One major part of the potential ethics violation centers on Engoron allegedly accepting expert advice without disclosing it to either party.

Habba and Clifford claimed that the judge’s inaction on informing them of the supposed advice meant he participated in three months of “obfuscation.”

“The New York Code of Judicial Conduct exists to ensure that litigants are afforded a fair and impartial trial,” Habba said in a statement. “Justice Engoron’s communications with Attorney Adam Leitman Bailey regarding the merits of this case, however, directly violate that code and demonstrate that Judge Engoron cannot serve as a fair arbiter. It is clear that Judge Engoron should recuse himself immediately.”
