Painted Church, Kona, Hawaii

I found this gem on the earthbyfoot website.  There is plenty more information on this wonderful church at the website.

FROM EARTHBYFOOT:

Welcome to one of my favorite and one of the most colorful churches in South Kona – St. Benedict Catholic Church, also known as The Painted Church. If you plan a trip to the Big Island of the Hawaiian Islands, add the Painted Church in Captain Cook to your itinerary. This stunning church holds architectural and historical significance. It is a must-visit destination for travelers who like beautiful biblical artwork and hidden gems.

Exploring The Painted Church

Many travelers might say the art at The Painted Church is nothing like Michelangelo’s art, or some other famous artist. However, I would argue that in some ways the art at St. Benedict is better. Father John took his own two hands to dismantle and rebuild a church in his own way. He built a church! Then, he felt called to paint it through his vision of spreading God’s word. His work is detailed, personal, symbolic of the life he committed to serving God.

Intricate murals adorn the walls

From the beautiful gardens to the intricate murals adorning the interior walls, there’s no shortage of beauty and wonder to discover at this beloved landmark. To help plan your visit, we’ve compiled one of the most comprehensive travel guides online to the Painted Church in South Kona.

While there, we met a local St. Benedict parishioner (and her stray dog) sitting in a pew at the back of the church, as if waiting for us. She had a lot of local knowledge and expertise on the Painted Church. Her passion for St. Benedict Church was evident in the unsolicited private tour she gave us.  We were amazed at her knowledge of how the Painted Church came to exist. Below is some of the information she shared and that we learned on our adventure exploring the inside of The Painted Church.

A brief history of St. Benedict Catholic Church

The church at its present location was originally St. Francis Regis Chapel. In 1842, this Chapel in Hōnaunau sat close to the ocean near Pu’uhonua o Honaunau or the City of Refuge.

Note: A Belgian priest dismantled every board and pew to carry uphill. St. Francis Regis Church’s new home became the leeward side of Mauna Loa, a 13,680-foot tall volcanic mountain.

Father John Berchmans Velghe

The Belgian priest, Father John Berchmans Velghe, is credited for building St. Benedict. He replaced Father Aloys Lorteau who died in 1898. Father Aloys Lorteau served Hōnaunau for 37 years. Seeking medical attention in Honolulu, he died traveling aboard the vessel Maunaloa on Easter Monday.

Dismantling St. Francis Regis Chapel

Father Velghe, credited with building St. Benedict, dismantled every board and pew of St. Francis Regis Chapel, to create the place of worship called the Painted Church starting in 1899. The blessing of the church took place in 1902 by Bishop Gulstan Ropert. Bishop Ropert named the church in honor Saint Benedict.

Building St. Benedict (the Painted Church)

Father John studied theology for two years in Spain. Here, ornate cathedrals and paintings likely influenced his artwork at The Painted Church. Even so, he was not formerly trained in painting. Father Velghe spent a lot of his life in South Kona. The church recalled him to Belgium when his health was failing and he died in 1939.

Note: Father Velghe moved the church because he followed his parishioners. His congregation of mostly farmers ran out of fertile soil. They determined that there were more rich soils two miles up the mountain.

How the Painted Church got its name

With no former professional training in building or painting, the industrious and productive Father Velghe got to work. Can you imagine how hard it must have been to carry materials two miles uphill to its present day site? He was probably glad he did, as the air temperatures were cooler and perhaps there were less bugs.

St. Benedict’s interior

As Father Velghe made the building back into a church, he put his personal touches on it. Father Velghe started painting the interior, and he was very busy! His medium being the interior walls of the church. When he painted the interior walls of the church he covered every inch!

The paintings were colorful scenes from the Bible, lives of the saints, and important religious truths. His biblical murals quickly became famous. As more people heard of the murals, this Kona painted church gradually became the nickname for St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church.

Why paint?

In the late 1800s in Hawaii, most locals could not read or write. The Belgian priest Father John felt that he could best teach his congregation and those interested in becoming Catholic through imagery.

In those days, few Hawaiians could read and so he taught with pictures-most successfully. He spent over four years with saw and brush to complete the structure and was then recalled to Belgium where he died in 1939.

    1. Morning, Pat! Storms thru the night with a bit of calm when I first got up, temp of 65. Went out to dump the water out of the jelly feeder and refill it. 10 minutes later, here comes the wind and rain again….sigh….we’re going to float away soon!!! Hope all goes well this morning!

Personally, I prefer understated elegance than something gaudy like this church. It almost looks like a cartoon church to me. Definitely not my style.

I like this church. The fact that he used house paint and did it himself speaks to me. I have been in ornate gaudy churches before and I always wonder who they are trying to impress.
we are back in the water-the-garden in the morning stage. gonna be hot here but hubby says chance of scattered storms all week too.

I have been wondering if Biden is pulling an act. Just like Vincent “The Chin” Gigante, the boss of New York’s Genovese crime family, was known as “The Enigma in the Bathrobe” and “The Robe” because he would walk around Greenwich Village in a bathrobe and slippers to avoid prison by faking mental illness.

    Miranda Devine thinks so, too.

FTA: “The strategy risks engendering sympathy for a man who deserves none and lets him off the hook for all the damage he has wrought on this country. It also plays into Biden’s superpower: being underestimated. He might act like a doddering incompetent, look like a wax effigy and walk like a robot, but the president has the uncanny ability to exceed all expectations when it counts, politically. ”

A May 10, 2023 report by the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government filled in the details. The plot was hatched on October 17, 2020, when Biden campaign adviser — now secretary of state — Antony Blinken contacted Michael Morell. Morell had served as acting director of the CIA under Obama. At Blinken’s request, Morell began assembling the draft of a statement that would dismiss this epic October surprise as more of the same old Russian disinformation. At the very least, Blinken should resign immediately.

Morell had a motive. He was in the running for the post of CIA director. Needing a Biden win to secure it, Morell went to work lining up co-conspirators. “Thereafter,” reads the subcommittee report, “Morell contacted several former intelligence officials to help write the statement, solicit cosigners, and help with media outreach.” On October 19, Morell emailed Nick Shapiro, his former deputy chief of staff, asking him to place the statement in major publications.

“On background,” Shapiro was to tell reporters that Morell, in talking to Russian intel experts, “was struck by the fact that all of them thought Russia is involved here.” In truth, Morell had talked to no Russian intel experts before organizing the draft.

Politico bit first, running a story on October 19 under the bold headline “Hunter Biden Story Is Russian Disinfo, Dozens of Former Intel Officials Say.” As Morell testified to the House subcommittee, one major purpose of the statement was “to help Vice President Biden in the debate.”

In an October 19, 2020 email, Morell told former CIA director John Brennan he wanted to “give the [Biden] campaign, particularly during the debate on Thursday, a talking point to push back on Trump on this issue.”

During the October 23 debate, when Trump played the laptop card, Biden countered with the Russia card as planned. “Look, there are fifty former National Intelligence folks who said that what this, he’s accusing me of is a Russian plan,” said a well rehearsed Biden. “They have said that this has all the characteristics — four — five former heads of the CIA, both parties, say what he’s saying is a bunch of garbage. Nobody believes it except him, his, and his good friend Rudy Giuliani.”

In an estimate more conservative than many, Trump pollster John McLaughlin found that 4.6 percent of Biden voters would not have voted for Biden if they had known about the contents of Hunter’s laptop. Even if those people had simply not voted, their absence at the polls would have handed several swing states to Trump.

Kept purposefully in the dark, too many Americans chose to believe Biden and his co-conspirators. “On November 3, 2020, the American people went to the polls to elect the president of the United States with the false impression that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation,” the House subcommittee concluded three years too late. “The American people cannot get back the 2020 election.”

They cannot get the election back, but they can get justice. If prison seems an extreme remedy for the conspirators, it pays to remember that 40 government officials were indicted or imprisoned for Watergate.

  3. “DEVELOPING: Biden has been taking the following pharmaceuticals: Eliquis, Crestor, Pepcid, Dymista and Comirnaty”

Paul Sperry is usually pretty accurate: https://x.com/paulsperry_/status/1801293391101329913

EXCERPT: “Eliquis is an anticoagulant medication used to treat and prevent blood clots and strokes. Back in 1988, Biden suffered a blood clot in his lung and was sent to Walter Reed Medical Center for treatment.

Crestor is a drug used to lower bad cholesterol levels while Pepcid helps control heartburn and stomach ulcers.

Dymista is a combination medication containing azelastine and fluticasone that is used to treat seasonal allergies. Biden has suffered from sinus issues throughout his life.

Arguably, the most interesting drugs on the list is Comirnaty. This drug is found in Pfizer’s COVID shot, suggesting that Biden is still addicted to the Fauci Ouchie.

Some X posters, though, were skeptical this was the complete list of drugs Biden was taking. Adderall was among the most popular mentions…..”

“They left off cocaine and Adderall, right ?”

    “You forget adderall and crack.”

“Now list the other 5, including Adderrall, Aricept, B1, etc….”

The only way we will all know for sure if this is the complete list is if Biden submits to a drug test in public. But that will almost certainly never happen.”

  4. National Pulse: “‘Mass Shootings’ Are Up 44% Under Biden.”

“Mass shootings have surged during Biden’s presidency, with a projected total of 2,462 incidents by the end of 2024, according to the Gun Violence Archive. This marks a staggering 44.32 percent increase compared to the 1,706 mass shootings that occurred during Trump’s four years in office.

The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as an incident where four or more people are shot and/or killed, excluding the shooter. This consistent definition allows for accurate tracking and comparison of gun violence incidents across different time periods.

    Key Figures:

    • Trump’s Term (2017-2020):
      • 2017: 347
      • 2018: 335
      • 2019: 414
      • 2020: 610
      • Total: 1,706
    • Biden’s Term (2021-2024, projected):
      • 2021: 689
      • 2022: 646
      • 2023: 656
      • 2024 (projected): 471
      • Total: 2,462

The increase is underscored by the carnage in most Democrat-run cities in America, with most gun crime victims either known to their assailants or gang violence or robbery.”

Trump announced multiple endorsements from high-profile black community leaders ahead of his meeting in Michigan.

Biden spoke at the NAACP’s Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner last month in Detroit, according to Fox News.

Patel was arrested last week for the third-degree felony of online impersonation and the misdemeanor of misrepresenting his identity, court records show. He posted $22,500 in total for two bonds – one on each of the charges – and he surrendered his passport.

Patel made a Facebook post in September 2023 about the insults he allegedly ginned up against himself along with a photo of the racist comments.

“[W]hen my Republican opponents supporters’ decide to hurl #racist, #anti-immigrant, #Hinduphobic, or otherwise disgusting insults at my family, faith community, colleagues, and me – that crosses a line,” he wrote. He also accused former President Donald Trump and “today’s extremist Republican party” of inciting such rhetoric.

Incumbent Republican commissioner Andy Meyers, Patel’s opponent, was responsible for initiating the investigation of the comments, documents from the Fort Bend County District Clerk’s office show, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Patel is accused of using other people’s pictures to create Facebook profiles and then posting racist and hateful messages and comments with those profiles. He would then take the comments and use them to request donations throughout the county.

Many of the hateful comments endorsed incumbent Meyers. For example, a screenshot of one comment posted by Patel said: “I am with Meyers ALL THE WAY because he serves Jesus unlike Patel and his followers who worship Monkey and Elephant.”

Patel’s website states that President Joe Biden appointed him to serve as a White House liaison and as a member of the Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Committee.”

Trump commuted Kilpatrick’s prison sentence for fraud and racketeering on his last day in the Oval Office, and the former president’s campaign quoted Kilpatrick’s endorsement in an announcement Saturday, alongside the endorsements of other prominent black Americans.

“I can never thank President Trump enough for what he’s done for me and my family by giving me freedom. But I believe this election and the issues involved are personal to every family and every person in America,” Kilpatrick, who served as a Democrat in the Michigan House of Representatives, said.

The campaign also announced the creation of the “Black Americans for Trump” coalition. “While Black Americans have been left behind by Joe Biden, President Trump has prioritized the Black community,” Team Trump Black Media Director Janiyah Thomas said in a statement.

The former president also received endorsements from leaders such as Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, Pastor Darrell Scott, radio host Larry Elder and others.

However, Kilpatrick’s endorsement of Trump may prove particularly vital as the swing state of Michigan is expected to play an important role in determining the outcome of the 2024 election.”

SEATTLE, WA — Local man Harry Bonds had chopped his balls off and changed his name to “Maxxine” to avoid the draft, only to find out that women will now be drafted and all his efforts were for naught.

“Boy, do I feel silly,” said Bonds after seeing the news. “Really wishing I hadn’t cut my dong off now.”

According to sources, Bonds had received his registration for Selective Service, but quickly realized he could avoid any chance of being drafted if he simply said he was a chick. “Man, did this backfire,” sighed Bonds. “I go to all the trouble to inject myself with hormones and castrate myself, only for the government to say we’re going to start drafting women. Feels a little foolish now, I have to admit.”

Hundreds of men across the country expressed similar regrets over mutilating themselves to avoid compulsory military service, only for the military to start forcing women into combat. “All those wigs and injected hormones, down the drain,” said local man Dean Manafort. “Ugh, and now everything I own is in this stupid name ‘Jilliano’ I made up. Hindsight, am I right?”

At publishing time, several men had called up their gender surgeons to ask if they could please have their dongs back.

  9. NF: This applies FAR more than people realize! LOL – as for me, my goal for the day varied (of course!) – depended on who I was fishing with, what we were fishing for, when and where we were fishing, and why we were fishing: who, what, when, where, & why = a basic rule in writing a story! More often than not, when I was with my last ex, Mark, it was a competition – I LOVED showing him up! ROFL – he thought he was this super-duper master fisherman….ha!

SWEETWATER, AL — Alabama man Benjamin Braun once again declared his deep love for fishing this morning as he set out on the lake with a giant cooler filled with beer.

“Gosh, I sure do love fishing,” Braun reportedly said to his friend John McMurty, taking an appreciative swig of his beer as the two looked out over the lake and inhaled the fresh morning air. “Yes sir-ee-bob, nothing like being out here — just us, the fish, and this Yeti cooler filled to the brim with Coors Light. Best sport on earth.”

According to sources, Braun has fished most weekends for the past ten years, and thus far has caught about three fish. “It’s my passion. I just love the fight when you’ve got a bass on the line,” said Braun, taking another sip. “And I really mean when you have got a bass on the line, because I’ve never had one. Caught a mean perch though last year. Aw man, did I forget the bait again?”

Braun’s wife Evelyn reported that Braun’s love for fishing came as a surprise as he doesn’t like fish or the outdoors. “He’s really gotten into it though,” said Evelyn. “He bought a new rod last year and an even bigger cooler. He still hasn’t figured out how to tie a hook on the line, but it’s only been a decade, I’m sure he’ll get there.”

At publishing time, Braun had been seen heading to the golf course in order to “stay active and get a few steps in.”

U.S. — In one of the most remarkable miracles in human history, the thousands of bump stocks that went missing seven years ago in boating accidents all simultaneously washed ashore and have been reunited with their owners.

“Wow, my bump stock washed ashore! And just a day after the Supreme Court ruling overturning the ban!” said local man Omar Gonzales. “What’s even crazier, my neighbor Bill also lost his in a boating accident in 2017, and his bump stock also washed ashore this morning. It’s a miracle!”

Across the nation, tens of thousands of Americans reported similar shocking experiences. “It’s the darndest thing,” said local man John Robinson. “Every single one of my buddies at the gun club said their bump stock washed ashore today, still in great condition. What kind of natural phenomenon does that? It’s almost as weird as when everyone I knew lost their bump stocks in boating accidents back in 2017. What an amazing coincidence.”

At publishing time, experts had warned that Biden’s attempt to ban AR-15s could lead to another horrific epidemic of boating accidents.

Using the Selective Service title is the shiny object that everyone will latch onto, while understanding that there is no political motivation to conscript both males and females into a military that makes up only 0.3% of the US population.

For me, the issue here is that through legislation, the federal government is including everyone from ages 18-26 in a state held database. Each year, more American adults will be added to it.

Like COVID and data farming, there is no understanding and agreement on who has access to the database and what it can be used for… now or whenever someone thinks there might be a need, overtly or covertly.
