Deepest Gorge in North America

Hells Canyon, North America’s deepest river gorge, encompasses a vast and remote region with dramatic changes in elevation, terrain, climate and vegetation. Carved by the great Snake River, Hells Canyon plunges more than a mile below Oregon’s west rim, and 8,000 feet below snowcapped He Devil Peak of Idaho’s Seven Devils Mountains. There are no roads across Hells Canyon’s 10-mile wide expanse, and only three roads that lead to the Snake River between Hells Canyon Dam and the Oregon-Washington boundary.

Where is Hells Canyon?

There is no recognized geographic place called Hells Canyon. According to R.G. Bailey’s book, Hells Canyon, the canyon starts 90 miles south of Lewiston, Idaho and Extends 40 miles further south to appoint near Oxbow, Oregon. This is, of course, debatable.

How did it get its name?

According to Carrey, Conley, and Barton, in their book Snake River of Hells Canyon, most of the early explorers referred to the gorge as Box Canyon or Snake River Canyon. The first reference to Hells Canyon appears in an 1895 edition of McCurdy’s Marine History of the Pacific Northwest. In discussing the voyage of the steamboat, Norma, the author writes; “she then bound off, swinging into midstream, and like a racehorse, shot into Hells Canyon…” The name was used by the Mazama hiking club in their 1931 bulletin. Bailey’s book, Hells Canyon, was published in 1943. Senator Neuberger of Oregon used it in several publications in the 1930s.

How deep is the canyon?

He Devil Mountain is 9,393 feet above sea level. The canyon plunges 7,913 feet, and 1 ½ miles from its summit to the mouth of Granite Creek, 6 miles away, at 1,480 feet.

How long have people lived in Hells Canyon?

The earliest firm date comes from a rock shelter at Bernard Creek, 7,100 years ago. A Clovis point found near the south end of the canyon indicates the possibility of human occupation 15,000 years ago. These people left ample evidence of their passing including some magnificent rock art at places like Buffalo Eddy. Figures carved into the rock are called petroglyphs, and pictures painted on the rock are called pictographs. They are not a form of written language; their meanings are lost in time.

The Wild and Scenic Snake River

How long is the Snake River?

The Snake River originates in Yellowstone National Park at 9,500 feet and winds through southern Idaho before turning north to form the boundary between Idaho and Oregon. It finally joins the Columbia River near Pasco, Washington at 340 feet in elevation 1036 miles from its source. According to Bill Gulick, in his book Snake River Country, the Snake drains 109,000 square miles and contributes 36 million acre feet of water to the Columbia River, ranking 6th in volume among the nation’s rivers.

How did the river get its name?

Indians living along the river in southern Idaho used a hand sign to identify themselves that resembled the movement of a snake. Although, it didn’t mean ”snake’, that name was given to this group of people, now known as the Shoshone. The river flowing through the Snake Indian’s land was given the tribal name.

  1. Morning All.
about 52* here this morning. big, swift moving dark clouds rolling in from the west here–already blocking the sun. see what today brings.
seeing many theories about the merchan case post. if it’s a mistrial, then President Trump has to go thru it all over again–however, the “crime” surprise is now out of the bag and his defense can finally defend against it. Or, is this merchan’s trick to get President Trump to violate the gag order? Or is it an effort to get out from underneath the mess they created? time will tell.

    1. Morning, Pat! Thankfully, our thunderstorm wasn’t too bad – some heavy rain for a bit but not a lot and the wind wasn’t so bad. 58 here this morning with clear skies, no wind. I’m done trying to speculate on what’s going to happen now….none of it makes any sense and I’m done racking my brain over it. What happens….happens….nothing we can do to change a damned thing!

My Sis e-mailed this to me – soooo cool! A man’s dog finds an injured hummingbird so he decides to try to save it. What a journey! When it was better and able to fend for itself, he set it free….it came back and kept coming back…..really cute video! You can watch it even if you aren’t on FB. Bookmark it! You’ll enjoy it – I promise!

      1. Morning Filly!
we lost internet last night after supper. but the power stayed on.
oh i agree…about trying to guess…and that’s all it is right now is guessing.
        i bookmarked it!
my granddaughter, one summer when they visited, saw a chubby (and mean chubby!) hummer on the feeder and she seemed to be shaking. so she named her Lily and during that stay we took turns holder the feeder and getting the hummers to land on our hands. well Lily didn’t land on our hands, so my granddaughter walked up to the feeder she was sitting on and petted her. light, light touches and the hummer didn’t move. i told her last month that Lily is back again is year–there is one plump female that likes to just sit on the feeder.

          1. I usually wait till mid July to try—there’s usually a dozen or so flying around at once and the females will generally land on the feeder i hold–cuz the males fight over the rest…LOL

in fact, they will sit on your thumbs if you kind of cup the feeder in your hands. you don’t even feel them that’s how light they are. and they will fly in front of your face too. the trick is to be very still.

    1. Just The News: “The Israeli military freed four hostages taken captive by Hamas in daring rescue operations Saturday in the Gaza Strip that were conducted in the shadows of a pressure campaign by the United States to force a ceasefire.

Officials said three males and a female who had been taken captive during the attack on the Nova Music festival on Oct. 7 were rescued and taken to hospitals for treatment. Officials identified those rescued as Noa Argamani, 25, Almog Meir Jan, 21, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 40. All were reported in good medical condition.

Hamas took about 250 hostages during its terrorist attack on Oct. 7, and about half were released during a November cease-fire. Saturday’s operation was the largest rescue since the war began.

Officials said Saturday’s hostages were freed in daytime raids at two separate locations in a Nuseirat refugee camp.”

“Biden Sends Groveling Apology to Zelensky for Aid Delay”

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Joe Biden apologized to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday for the delay in funneling him even more military aid. The Democrat tried to blame the delay on Republican lawmakers before pledging his unwavering support for the proxy war with Russia.

“I apologize for the weeks of not knowing what was going to pass, in terms of funding, because we had trouble getting the bill that we had to pass, that had the money in it,” Biden told Zelensky before a private meeting in Paris. Biden complained “very conservative members were holding it up” but emphasized that his government intends to continue supporting the Ukrainian war machine despite Ukrainian victory having become an increasingly dim prospect in the face of Russian advances.

Zelensky expressed gratitude for Biden’s “significant support,” drawing parallels with U.S. assistance for the European Allies in the 1940s.

“During World War II, the United States helped to save human lives, to save Europe. And we count on your continuing support and standing with us, shoulder to shoulder,” he said. Zelensky has frequently appeared more willing to trigger a Third World War than to negotiate a peace deal, recently demanding NATO warplanes begin flying missions against Russia inside Ukraine.

    NO OFF RAMP.

The meeting, held during ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, was the first face-to-face between Biden and Zelensky since December and follows Biden authorizing Ukraine to use U.S. weapons to strike Russia. The Kremlin alleges this has already resulted in deadly attacks on women and children on the Russian side of the border in Belgorod.

Among the Republicans reluctant to continue funding the war is vice presidential contender Senator J.D. Vance. He argues the U.S. military-industrial complex is incapable of supplying the Ukrainians with the shells they need and that nothing the U.S. does can replace its manpower losses.

“[B]oth American and Ukrainian leadership [need] to accept that Mr. Zelensky’s stated goals for the war—a return to 1991 boundaries—are fantastical,” the America First Congressman has said, stressing Biden “has no viable plan for the Ukrainians to win this war.”

  3. I periodically get texts looking for donations – I always reply “Stop” and delete it. Hmmm….so much for “cleaning house” at the RNC!!!

National Pulse: “RNC Launches ‘Swamp The Vote’ Site, Appears to Be Just Another Data Mining Op”

“The Republican National Committee (RNC) launched a “Swamp The Vote” website on Friday. Although it claims to be a voter registration site, it appears to be just another data mining operation by the Republican central apparatus. Multiple attempts at using the site yielded nothing but a call for personal contact details from users.

The site appears to have been rushed out – with the domain registered in late May – as a way for the RNC to claim it is taking “action” to ensure a victory for President Trump in November.

The domain was registered on May 16, 2024, and simply includes a web form for users to share personal details with the RNC.

In reality, most users of the website will already have given the RNC, NRSC, NRCC, or Trump campaign their contact details over the past nine years. Despite its official rollout on Friday, the domain appears to have received little traction so far, with just a handful of X users sharing the hyperlink.

Sources at the RNC have told The National Pulse that since the organization’s takeover in March, very little has changed, with most staffers who were originally “fired” being brought back in under external consultancy contracts.”

  4. National Pulse: “Biden Targets Whistleblower For Exposing Sex-Change Operations On Minors”

“A doctor who blew the whistle on a Texas hospital’s clandestine program that included administering puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and other sex-change operations on minors is now being prosecuted for his actions by the Biden Department of Justice (DOJ). Surgeon Eithan Haim faces at least four felony counts of violating HIPAA in a case being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tina Ansari.

In 2023 Haim had alerted several media outlets, including City Journal, that the Texas Children’s Hospital transgender medicine program included minor children among its patients, despite the hospital publicly stating otherwise. The ensuing controversy led the Texas state legislature to ban transgender medical procedures from being conducted on minors altogether.

Haim’s actions not only exposed his employer’s dangerous and ethically dubious transgender medical practices but have now drawn unwanted attention from the federal attorneys in the Biden government. Last June, federal agents showed up outside of Haim’s home—perhaps not coincidentally on the same day the doctor was to graduate from his hospital’s residency program. At the time, the agents informed him he was being investigated as a suspect in the leaks regarding transgender medicine practice at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Nearly a year later, the Biden government decided to proceed with its prosecution, which Assistant U.S. Attorney Ansari still oversees. U.S. marshals arrived outside Haim’s home earlier this week with a court summons. The doctor faces four felony charges, all stemming from HIPAA violations. Haim’s attorney insists the doctor went to great lengths to comply with HIPAA standards even in his leaks to the media, redacting any patient identifying information from the documents he provided reporters.

The case appears to be less about HIPAA and more about silencing medical whistleblowers who would expose child sex-change practices at hospitals across the U.S.”

  5. EXCERPT: “Former President Donald Trump managed to raise $12 million on Thursday night alone. While the figure pales in comparison to his post-conviction hauls that have reportedly reached $200 million, the sum is noteworthy for one key reason: He raised it in San Francisco.

The overwhelmingly liberal city has been a bastion of Democratic politics for decades and is represented by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The fundraising haul did not reportedly come from the city’s average citizens, however, but from large-dollar donors with ties to Silicon Valley.

In 2024, burglary is up by 44% in 2024 in San Francisco’s more residential Taraval police district, The New York Post reported. Burglaries are also up by 19% in Ingleside and 6.2% in the Richmond neighborhood. San Francisco has not has a Republican mayor since 1964, when served as the 34th mayor of San Francisco starting in 1956.

Situated in the Bay Area, the Valley is home to many tech and venture capital firms. In recent weeks, many of its heavyweights, albeit for varying reasons, have thrown their support behind the former president.

“In 2016, the number of people from Silicon Valley I knew who supported Trump was a sample of one, which was Peter [Thiel],” former Palantir adviser Jacob Helburg told Reuters. “Today I count them in the dozens, if not more than that. Over the course of the past six months, we’ve started to see the dam break.”

Thiel made history in 2016 as the first openly gay man to address the Republican National Convention……”

  6. Just The News: “Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray has a message for county clerks: Do not use drop boxes in this year’s election. In a letter to the state’s 23 county clerks, Gray wrote that he had rescinded directives from previous Secretary of State Ed Buchanan in 2020 that allowed for ballot drop boxes.

“Given the differing interpretations of my predecessors’ support for drop boxes, I want to be unequivocally clear: I do not believe drop boxes represent a safe, secure, or statutory basis for absentee voting,” Gray said in a statement. “For this reason, I believe they should not be used in the 2024 Election and beyond.”

Pointing to what he calls “the plain language” of the Wyoming Election Code that completed absentee ballots be mailed or delivered to the clerk, Gray said it does not allow for unattended ballot drop boxes as a means of delivering absentee ballots to the clerk.

“The strained interpretation only came about during the government’s response to COVID-19, and the directives authorizing them are no longer in effect,” said Gray, a Republican. “As Wyoming Secretary of State, I remain committed to preserving the integrity and confidence in Wyoming’s elections. I remain convinced that the use of unstaffed and unattended ballot drop boxes is not best for our state and lacks statutory authorization, and I am strongly opposed to their use.”

Wyoming Democratic Party Chair Joe Barbuto did not appear concerned in a statement to The Center Square.

“In Federal, state, county, and local elections, Wyoming Democrats have exceptional individuals running for office,” said Barbuto. “We understand and appreciate the amount of time, dedication, and effort that goes into these races – whether it’s for the U.S. Senate or town council – and look forward to providing the support and resources Democratic candidates need to be successful this November.”

How Liberals Pay Off Their Bimbos

    Ann Coulter

Suppose you were Donald Trump trying to decide how to record a nuisance payment that you were making with your own money (not Bunny Mellon’s) for entry into your own books?

You’d look at precedent, right? How did Clinton report the campaign cash he was spending on a lowlife to smear his sexual conquests? How did Edwards report the million-plus dollars in campaign donations he received from Fred and Bunny to cover up an ongoing affair?

Clinton laundered the campaign’s payments to Palladino through a law firm and listed them on Federal Election Commission forms as “legal expenses.” Unlike Trump’s personal business records, these entries were being submitted to the FEC. Those entries had to be perfect!

    So that’s how it’s done.

But wait a second! How come when Trump lists his payment to squelch a single “bimbo eruption” as a “legal expense,” he’s committed “profoundly serious” crimes?

I’ve just been notified that I am listed on an “Enemies list” compiled by the Ukrainian government, alongside other US congress members and a select few Americans

To make matters worse, this list was published on a database that received funding from the US government.

My office will be reaching out to the other Americans who are being targeted by the Ukrainian government.

  10. “The Government’s War on “Backyard” Farms-I’m still the king of me – Part 1″

ROBERT W MALONE MD, MS, JUN 08, 2024

EXCERPT: “On the front page of the CDC website, is the following headline:

Which then opens into the following:

    • Are you ready to give away your chickens?
    • Move from the country?
    • Wear gloves and a mask when caring for backyard chickens?
    • Stop buying eggs from your local farmer
    • or, all of the above?

But hold your horses, reading further into the report – here are the numbers:

Out of 330 million people in the USA in 2024, 109 have gotten sick from Salmonella and have some association with backyard poultry this year.

A further dig into the CDC archives reveals that for the past six years, the CDC has conducted successive investigative “reports” on Salmonella outbreaks linked to backyard poultry. In fact, they write numerous articles on the subject each year.

Something fishy is going on here…

A search for poultry and salmonella on the CDC website reveals no such investigations or public reports for commercial poultry operations. There are NO reports for 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020 or 2019 (the archives stop at 2019).

The CDC estimates that Salmonella bacteria cause about 1 million illnesses, 19,000 hospitalizations, and 380 deaths each year in the U.S. Below are the numbers for salmonella cases linked to backyard poultry, according to the CDC webpages: ……….”
