Today, June 1, is the birthday of Norma Jean Mortenson aka Marilyn Monroe. She was born in 1926 and died in 1962. The song, Candle in the Wind, by Elton John was a tribute to her. When I researched the song, I found an interesting article on Songfacts detailing many things I didn’t know about the song that I loved so much including the fact that the song wasn’t so much a tribute to only Monroe, but more a statement on how fame impacts people. Elton John rededicated the song a few times since he wrote it.
From Songfacts:
This song is a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, a famous actress and sex symbol who died of a drug overdose in 1962. The “candle in the wind” represents her short, but eventful life.

The song makes various references to the press coverage of Monroe. The famous opening line, “Goodbye Norma Jeane,” refers to her birth name: Norma Jeane Mortenson, and how she gave up both her name and her privacy for the sake of celebrity.
The lyrics were written by Elton’s writing partner, Bernie Taupin, who got the idea for the title from a quote he read about Janis Joplin. According to Taupin, the song is more of a take on fame and celebrity than an ode to Marilyn Monroe. Said Taupin: “I think the biggest misconception about ‘Candle In The Wind’ is that I was this rabid Marilyn Monroe fanatic, which really couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s not that I didn’t have a respect for her. It’s just that the song could just as easily have been about James Dean or Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain. I mean, it could have been about Sylvia Plath or Virginia Woolf. I mean, basically, anybody, any writer, actor, actress, or musician who died young and sort of became this iconic picture of Dorian Gray, that thing where they simply stopped aging. It’s a beauty frozen in time.
In a way, I’m fascinated with that concept. So it’s really about how fame affects the man or woman in the street, that whole adulation thing and the fanaticism of fandom. It’s pretty freaky how people really believe these people are somehow different from us. It’s a theme that’s figured prominently in a lot of our songs, and I think it’ll probably continue to do so.”
When Elton got the lyrics, he had no trouble writing the music. He understood the stress caused by constant media attention, and felt Monroe must have been in terrible pain her whole life.
From Songfacts:
On April 7, 1990 Elton dedicated this to Ryan White, one of the first high-profile AIDS patients, when he performed it at Farm Aid 4. White, who got the disease from a blood transfusion, died the next night at age 18.
He rededicated it again in 1997 to Princess Diana, calling it Goodbye England’s Rose.
From Songfacts: Elton’s lyricist, Bernie Taupin, rewrote the lyrics to this song after Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed in a car accident on August 31, 1997. The 36-year-old princess had divorced Prince Charles, but remained a beloved celebrity, revered for her humanitarian efforts and grace. Diana was friends with Elton John and also a big fan – she identified with the sentiment in “Candle In The Wind,” especially the lyrics, “They made you change your name, never knowing who to cling to when the rain set in” and “even when you died, the press still hounded you.”

With the song rewritten, most notably with the first line changed from “Goodbye Norma Jeane” to “Goodbye England’s Rose,” Elton played it at Princess Diana’s funeral on September 6. The global TV audience for the funeral was estimated at 2.5 billion, and Elton’s heartfelt performance provoked an outpouring of support for the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund. The new version of the song, which was produced by Sir George Martin of Beatles fame, was released as a single as “Candle In The Wind ’97,” this time dedicated to Princess Diana and with proceeds going to the fund.
(snip)
After performing the song at Diana’s funeral, Elton never again sang it with those lyrics. When the song fell off the charts, most radio stations also retired it, going back to the original version of “Candle In The Wind.”

Goodbye, Norma Jeane
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would’ve liked to know you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh, the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would’ve liked to know you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Goodbye, Norma Jeane
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
Goodbye, Norma Jeane
From the young man in the twenty second row
Who sees you as something more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would’ve liked to know you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Morning All
it’s chilly again this morning –only 42*. the hummers are on the feeders already, but i don’t hear the orioles yet. it looks like the sun is rising and hopefully will be a nice day for hubby to finish the weed eating and yard work. I plan to make an apple pie after breakfast.

Morning, Pat! 62 here this morning and overcast but no thunderstorms on the horizon at least and no wind….yet. Orioles were flocking on the feeder when I got up – thankfully, it doesn’t need refilling yet – had to refill it twice yesterday! I’ve been seeing more hummers, too. Considering all the sweets you bake….ok, never mind…..let’s just say, I’d be a WHOLE lot heavier than I am now!!! Pies and cakes in my life, even as a child, were items for special occasions.
I still have both Diana’s wedding and her funeral on VHS tape. Hmmmm…I expect that bin full of VHS tapes will go into the trash when I’m gone. Or maybe Goodwill, which is the same thing.

Morning Filly!
I never cared for her wedding dress…thought it was too puffy for her.
i bought the apples at the little market in town–a few weeks ago to make Mom a pie when we went to see her, but she said she had a hankering for the cinnamon buns I made every Christmas morning (both my parents and hubby’s parents cam every Christmas morning to watch the kids open gifts and i’d bake them.) so that’s what i made her. and i had to use the apple up–I could feel a rotten one in there and discarded it.

Baking wasn’t as big a deal in my life growing up; like I said, it was only special occasions, like birthdays, Thanksgiving, Xmas, confirmations, weddings, etc., etc. You bake all the time – admit it – you always have SOME dessert after meals, right? 😉😉😉😉

but to be honest–it’s half and half. some times we eat no sugar added fruit–like sliced pears or peaches. I eat unsweetened applesauce too. so it’s NOT all baked goods….I just don’t talk about the applesauce or canned fruit…LOL

Isn’t that a “habit” that you grew up with, having something sweet to end the meal? If we wanted a snack later in the evening, it was “there are leftovers in the fridge.”

not really dessert. Dad was diabetic so we got our cookies after school. we had mostly fruit for dessert growing up. but parties, picnics, that kind of thing–everyone baked.

CNN Senior Legal Analyst Describes How The Trump Conviction Was A Political Hit Job 1. “The judge donated money… in plain violation of a rule prohibiting New York judges from making political donations—to a pro-Biden, anti-Trump political operation.” 2. Alvin Bragg boasted on the campaign trail in an overwhelmingly Democrat county, “It is a fact that I have sued Trump over 100 times.” 3. “Most importantly, the DA’s charges against Trump push the outer boundaries of the law and due process.” 4. “The charges against Trump are obscure, and nearly entirely unprecedented. In fact, no state prosecutor — in New York, or Wyoming, or anywhere — has ever charged federal election laws as a direct or predicate state crime, against anyone, for anything. None. Ever.” 5. The DA inflated misdemeanors past the statute of limitations and “electroshocked them back to life” by alleging the falsification of business records was committed ‘with intent to commit another crime.’ 6. “Inexcusably, the DA refused to specify what those unlawful means actually were — and the judge declined to force them to pony up — until right before closing arguments. So much for the constitutional obligation to provide notice to the defendant of the accusations against him in advance of trial.” 7. “In these key respects, the charges against Trump aren’t just unusual. They’re bespoke, seemingly crafted individually for the former president and nobody else.” 8. “The Manhattan DA’s employees reportedly have called this the “Zombie Case” because of various legal infirmities, including its bizarre charging mechanism. But it’s better characterized as the Frankenstein Case, cobbled together with ill-fitting parts into an ugly, awkward, but more-or-less functioning contraption that just might ultimately turn on its creator.”

George Bush killed 500,000 innocent Iraqis based on a lie. Obama illegally ran weapons to Mexican cartels, and assassinated an American citizen. Bill Clinton bombed a medical facility in Sudan. Joe Biden allegedly molested his daughter, and credibly sexually assaulted Tara Reid. But Trump is the first American president to be criminally convicted based on alleged misclassification of an otherwise lawful payment. It’s not just that the criminals are in charge; They are rubbing their criminality in the face of their victims.

Federal prosecutors have arrested Robert P. Burke, the former Navy vice chief of operations, on serious bribery charges. Burke, 62, from Coconut Creek, Florida, is accused of steering government contracts in exchange for a lucrative job offer post-retirement.
During his tenure overseeing American naval forces across Europe, Russia, and much of Africa, Burke allegedly directed a contract to an unnamed company in return for a $500,000 yearly salary and 100,000 stock options. Co-chief executives of the company, Yongchul “Charlie” Kim, 50, and Meghan Messenger, 47, both from New York, also face charges for their involvement in the scheme.

Just The News: “Former President Donald Trump on Friday announced a sizeable fundraising haul in the wake of his guilty verdict in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s hush money case.
A New York jury on Thursday found Trump guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records after a weeks-long trial. The verdict appears to have energized his supporters, however, as the campaign’s donation page crashed, evidently due to the volume of traffic.
The campaign on Friday initially announced it had brought in $34.8 million in small dollar donations, marking a near-doubling of its single largest day total on WinRed. Later, it updated the total to $52.8 million raised in the 24 hours following the verdict.
“In the 24 hours since Crooked Joe Biden and his New York henchmen got their sham trial verdict, the Trump Campaign has raised $52.8 million through the online digital fundraising platform,” the campaign said in a statement reported by the Daily Wire. “THAT’S MORE THAN $2 MILLION PER HOUR!”
The team further announced that over one third of donations came from new donors. “From just minutes after the sham trial verdict was announced, our digital fundraising system was overwhelmed with support, and despite temporary delays online because of the amount of traffic, President Trump raised $34.8 million dollars from small dollar donors,” said Trump Campaign Senior Advisors Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles when first announcing the total.
“Not only was the amount historic, but 29.7% of yesterday’s donor’s were brand new donors to the WinRed platform,” they continued. “President Trump and our campaign are immensely grateful from this outpouring of support from patriots across our country. President Trump is fighting to save our nation and November 5th is the day Americans will deliver the real verdict.”
Trump faces sentencing on July 11 and is likely to appeal his convictions.”

“The Battle of Evermore — Observations from Globalism Central”
ROBERT W MALONE MD, MS, JUN 01, 2024
ENTIRE ARTICLE: “We are in Geneva, the international capital of Globalism. We all sense an impending battle. But do we know who is friend and who is foe? Do we understand our allies as well as our opponents? Simple stereotypes will not lead to victory. Both sides think that they represent the future. Both sides think they are battling evil to save the world. All passionately believe that they fight for the common good.
On one side, with a sense of noblesse oblige, a transnational elite works to advance a unified, globalized, centralized political and economic world order. A world order based on a command economy rooted in massive databases, predictive artificial intelligence-driven decision making and the merging of man and machine to create a new species.
Fulfilling this objective is believed to require universal surveillance, propaganda powered by modern psychology, algorithmic censorship, cultural homogenization, and centralized automated economic controls and resource allocation.
I believe that this will be a digital, technocratic and bureaucratic hell. I believe that Yeats’ Rough Beast, its hour come round at last, now slouches towards Geneva to be born. I believe in humanity. And I believe in the divine.
Our side believes in the pragmatic benefits of the Principal of Subsidiarity; Decision making at the most local competent politically representative structure. We believe in decentralization, nationalism, unique cultural identities, individual and national sovereignty, and the power of human innovation.
Centralized planning and control destroys the ability of individuals, cultures, and nations to innovate. Globalized, centralized planning and control will kill the motivation and ability of the human race to adapt to changing conditions. After the Soviet Union and so many others, do we really need another example before we can learn this lesson? Or does each era need to recycle history?
Elevating a new global centralized nobility will not lead to prosperity, innovation, and effective adaptation; it will destroy these things. We have seen the failure of this model over the last few years of the COVIDcrisis. How many more examples do we need?
I believe in the power of diversified independent thought, cultural heritage, and freedom. In this battle, I do not know which vision will prevail. What I do know is that old imperialistic models are outdated, and old empires and old ways of geopolitical thinking face imminent collapse. But they will not go quietly into the night.
And what I am absolutely sure of is that censorship will not save this version of imperialism currently hiding behind the weaponized propaganda term “Democracy.” And that the weaponization of fear of infectious disease to control human behavior is ethically evil, and that those who deploy these unethical practices to advance their objectives of political power, profit and control should be shamed and condemned. The use of psychological bioterrorism is wrong, and it must stop.
For the sake of our children, we must oppose both Transhumanism and weaponized fear. And we must insist on freedom, Dammit.”

“Smoky was found in a foxhole in New Guinea in Feb 1944. The American thought she must have been a Japanese soldier’s dog, but when he took her to a POW camp, they found out she didn’t understand commands in Japanese or English. The soldier sold Smoky to Cpl. William Wynne of Cleveland OH for 2 dollars Australian.
Over the next two years Wynne carried Smoky in his backpack, fought in the jungles of Rock Island and New Guinea, flew 12 air/sea rescues. She survived 150 air raids on New Guinea and made it through a typhoon at Okinawa, made a combat jump in Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, in a parachute made for her. She would warn G.I’s of incoming artillery and was dubbed the “angel from a foxhole.”
Early in retaking the Philippines combat engineers were setting up a telegraph line to an airfield. The joints collapsed filling them in with sand. Cpl. Wynne knew that Smoky could climb through the pipe with a new line and that is what she did. Smoky’s work saved approximately 250 ground crewmen from having to move around and keep operational 40 fighters and reconnaissance planes, while a construction detail dug up the taxiway, placing the men and the planes in danger from enemy bombings. What would have been a dangerous three-day digging task to place the wire was instead completed in minutes.
In her down time she preformed tricks with the Special Services to improve the moral of the troops and visited hospitals in Australia and Korea. Visiting with the sick and wounded, she became the first recorded “therapy dog.”
After the war she became a sensation back in the states, had a live TV show, and often visited Veteran’s hospitals. Smoky’s work as a therapy dog continued for 12 years. Wynne had Smoky 14 years before she passed away. He buried her in a 30 caliber ammo box in Rocky River Reservation, Ohio.

i hope the mother sues them into oblivion
Massachusetts authorities released a man on bail who was accused of sexually abusing his stepdaughter. He allegedly killed her on Thursday before turning the gun on himself, police said.
Juliano Santana, 49, was released from jail on a $30,000 cash bond in 2021 after being charged with six counts of aggravated rape of a child. The child in this case was his stepdaughter who was 13 years of age at the time.
Santana was ordered by a judge to wear an ankle monitor and have no contact with the victim or anyone under the age of 18 per condition of release, court documents show. The victim was granted a restraining order and the judge set his trial date for July 29, 2024.
On Thursday, Juliano Santana abducted his stepdaughter while she was walking on Great Road near Acton after school. The victim’s mother reported her daughter missing to police around 4 pm. Authorities tracked Santana’s location via his GPS ankle monitoring device, according to the Middlesex District Attorney.
Police located Santana and the teen inside a parked vehicle outside a condominium off Route 2A. Santana was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and the teen was pronounced dead at the scene.
A redacted police report filed in Sept. 2021 and obtained by the Boston Globe said that the victim and her mother reported Santana to authorities at the Malden police station. The girl accused Santana of sneaking into her bedroom at night and raping her. She said the abuse lasted between Oct. 2019 to Aug. 2021.
According to the report, the girl’s mother expressed her anxiety to the police that day, saying she was worried that “Juliano will find out that the police are now involved in this situation and that he would attempt to flee the area, possibly returning to Brazil where he is from.”
Police arrested Santana that same day, according to the filing, and he told police during his booking that he had a “medical condition related to what he is being charged with” and asked to see a doctor and a lawyer.
He pleaded not guilty at arraignment and was released on a $30,000 bail after the judge ruled against the $100,000 bail asked by prosecutors.

Just The News: “Boeing was forced to call off its first crewed launch with NASA of the company’s Starliner spacecraft on Saturday. The spacecraft was supposed to launch from Florida at 12:25 p.m. ET, making it the vehicle’s first crewed test flight.
However, the launch was stopped with less than minutes to go in the countdown, according to NBC News. This is a setback for Boeing which has dealt with prior delays this year. If this mission was successful, NASA would have been able to authorize Boeing to take routine trips to the orbiting outpost.
As of now, it is not known exactly why the launch was called off. However, according to NBC, “The decision to call off the launch was made after an automatic hold was triggered on a computer known as the ground launch sequencer, which controls operations in the final minutes of a launch countdown. It’s not yet known what caused the hold.”
The last Boeing launch attempt was last month, but it was called off due to issues with a valve.”

There’s also Airbus, Lockheed-Martin, as well as a Canadian company. Problem isn’t so much the Chinese, per se, but with the American companies that manufacture in China. BRING IT HOME!!!

Well, that was interesting….I’ve got Jake in the BR with the door closed with the patio doors open – turned into a gorgeous day, sunny, no wind and 77 now. The squirrel keeps getting into the nectar feeder on the trellis over the garden bed so I had an idea of a way to hang it on the slinky pole. I put a small bungee across the bottom of the jelly feeder and stretched it as tight as possible. I will hang the nectar feeder there – it’s still high enough that the squirrels can’t get to it.
In any case, when I came back inside with the feeder to clean out and refill, who was wandering around the LR/kitchen but Wheezer!!! The more I think about it, I think he IS a she, particularly interested in Jake since he is a male. I caught her before down at the end of the hallway, sniffing at the BR door – she knew he was in there. She immediately scrambled to get out the patio door, looking back as she scooted thru the doggie door. LOL – I’ve seen her lying in the garden bed more than once – that may be where she sleeps at night for all I know!

Wheezer is getting very comfortable around me and yes, she is definitely a female! After cleaning and refilling the Hummer nectar feeder, she was hanging around over by the patio as I hung it up. I decided to look in the shed again to see if I had something I could rig up to go around the last lope hill. While I was in there, she sauntered over and flopped down on the sidewalk nearby. I expected her to get up and run away when I came out but she didn’t budge – just laid there casually as I gave her a wide berth on my way back to the patio.
Close-up shows she is definitely female!

oh yeah. we found one dead on the road one spring…it by a car i guess.
one year, the didn’t break the damn till late in the spring–but never bothered to tell anyone they were doing it. our little in and out of the creek got flooded–but the farmer at the end of our road lost a calf. the creek runs thru pasture where his cows graze.

yup. the owner of the property is a vacation/ hunter type so he doesn’t come up a lot. now he makes the trip several times a year just to check things out. he paid the farmer for the calf even though no one asked or told him to.

Yeah, but #1, he has had no vaccinations since before I got him so would be in a lot of danger health-wise; and #2, he is declawed in front which would be a huge disadvantage in defending himself.

They get nasty w/o any sex involved! It’s kind of a part of the introduction between cats – they test each other just to see what gives.

I am adding a short daily prayer to the board. I would invite each of you, if you wish, to also add one or maybe two of your own liking. I do not want to stifle anyone but please limit yourself to one or two religious postings. here’s one I found that I liked.
