The blossom of the orange tree (Citrus sinensis) is one of the most fragrant flowers in Florida. Millions of these white flowers perfume the atmosphere throughout central and south Florida during orange blossom time. The orange blossom was selected as the state flower by the 1909 legislature.
The orange fruit is an important agricultural product, used for both the juicy fruit pulp and the aromatic peel (rind). Orange blossoms (the flowers) are used in several different ways, as are the leaves and wood of the tree.
Flowers
The orange blossom, which is the state flower of Florida, is highly fragrant and traditionally associated with good fortune. It has long been popular in bridal bouquets and head wreaths.
Orange blossom essence is an important component in the making of perfume.
Orange blossom petals can also be made into a delicately citrus-scented version of rosewater, known as “orange blossom water” or “orange flower water”. It is a common ingredient in French and Middle Eastern cuisines, especially in desserts and baked goods. In some Middle Eastern countries, drops of orange flower water are added to disguise the unpleasant taste of hard water drawn from wells or stored in qullahs (traditional Egyptian water pitchers made of porous clay). In the United States, orange flower water is used to make orange blossom scones and marshmallows.

In Spain, fallen blossoms are dried and used to make orange tea.
Orange blossom honey (or citrus honey) is obtained by putting beehives in the citrus groves while trees bloom. By this method, bees also pollinate seeded citrus varieties. This type of honey has an orangey taste and is highly prized.
Leaves
Orange leaves can be boiled to make orange tea.
Wood
Orangewood sticks are used as cuticle pushers in manicures and pedicures, and as spudgers for manipulating slender electronic wires.
Orangewood is used in the same way as mesquite, oak, and hickory for seasoning grilled meat.
SOURC: MIAMI LIVING
Thanks for this post, Miss Pat. I had forgotten about Orange blossom honey, bridal bouquets and did not know about the other uses for all parts of the orange tree. Our Florida orange groves suffered a blight a decade ago, and many trees were destroyed to try to stop it. So, we lost some treasured orange varieties. The huge Florida navel oranges of yesteryear that were used to make ambrosia and enjoyed for breakfast are gone for now, until they develop a disease resistant navel orange. California navel oranges are ok, but do not have the size and taste of the lost FL variety.
Incidentally, a blight hit the south GA and N FL dogwoods recently too – so our woods are no longer full of white blossoms in early spring. I’m not sure about the N GA and Carolina pink dogwoods.
Remember – a blight from China hit the huge majestic American Chestnut trees and killed them all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGhrPBYik2M

and the emerald ash borer beetle is decimating our ash trees. ironically the native chinese ash trees are immune…weird, huh?

Good morning, Pat and GA! There was some blight or beetle of some kind that took out a lot of elm trees, too, but the one Chinese Elm I have here is not susceptible to that either. I’ve got a couple of ash trees that seem to be ok.
We got a little more rain last night; it was a nipply 49 when I got up, now up to 50; predictions are for several really gorgeous days, up into the low 80’s. Those Orioles can keep me entertained for hours – swarming all over the feeders, fighting and clashing mid-air – I could actually hear them hitting each other. I had to refill both the WP block and the jelly feeder this morning.
I’m wondering if Wheezer might have gotten into a fight with the gray & white cat that my neighbors to the south befriended. He is friendly to them but very stand-offish with me or anyone else. Every time now when Wheezer comes to eat and Jake comes to the door hissing and growling, he drops down and slinks away. Jake has more gray that the other cat but Wheezer probably doesn’t see that distinction – just a much bigger gray & white cat like the one that whipped his ass.

they tried to contain the beetle here by county. if you cut firewood to sell, you couldn’t (or weren’t supposed to) transport it across county lines. some did, some didn’t and the beetle destruction spread.

got another raccoon overnight. nasty one too. when i took the jelly feeder out, he was hissing at me some fierce. there was a porkie at the tree stump this morning, and if they just confine themselves to eating that kind of stuff…hubby lets them be. we’ve noted all the places they’ve scratched or chewed on the deck and the deck supports so if don’t find anymore, he figures he got the one doing it and lets the others go. if we find new spots however hubby will take action.
cloudy and 50* here…yet ANOTHER rainy day on tap it seems…sigh

no. you have to respray after it rains–even for a little i believe.
one year we got 5 raccoons before they got the message. if they just come up on the deck and leave we don’t trap them. but when they come up and start pooping we do. that time we got a lot? they pooped and then tracked it all over the cushions i made for the swing and the adironak chairs. and then they dumped the half full ash bucket and tracked the ashes everywhere.
i was cleaning up after them every other night.

New Mexico Prosecutors: Migrants Gang Raped Deaf Woman in ‘Multi-Hour Nightmare’
Three migrant men from Guatemala have pleaded guilty or been convicted of gang raping a deaf woman after kidnapping her in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in June 2021. Another migrant, accused of being the ring leader, has since reportedly fled to Guatemala.
Oscar Rene Juarez Lopez, a 45-year-old Guatemalan national, pleaded guilty to rape and kidnapping and was sentenced to 20 years in prison this week, the Santa Fe New Mexican reports.
According to Deputy District Attorney Haley Murphy, Lopez, along with 26-year-old Owin Erlandi Lemus Cardona, 34-year-old Edward Climaco Velis, and 21-year-old Josue Donaldo Leon Cartagena — all migrants from Guatemala — forced the woman into a vehicle in the early morning hours of June 13, 2021.
The woman, according to Murphy, was then gang raped by the four men in a “multi-hour nightmare” where she was treated “like meat amongst a pack of wolves.” Some of the rape was filmed, according to prosecutors.
After gang raping her, the men dropped her off at her residence. The woman rushed to report the incident to police and take a sexual assault exam at a nearby hospital.

the Heritage Foundation has filed ethics complaints against dems who waved ukraine flags in the House chamber.
FTA
It is the Heritage Foundation that is demanding accountability.
“The only flags that belong on the floor of the U.S. House are American flags,” explained Mike Howell, of Heritage’s Oversight Project, in the report.
“It shouldn’t take an ethics complaint from the Oversight Project to instigate consequences for this flagrant violation of the rules.”
The project has sent a letter to the House Ethics Committee calling for a review of the actions of 28 House Democrats who flaunted the foreign country’s flag in the House chamber.
The letter charges multiple violations, including their defiance of House rules requirement members to “behave at all times in a manner that shall reflect creditably on the House.”
“The conduct of waving the flag impugns the reputation of the House because foreign flags dilute the primacy and importance of deep American traditions, American lives sacrificed, and the land that the American flag represents,” the letter said. “Not only do these flagrant displays of foreign capitulation disrespect our American heritage and the American way of life, but it also directly insults the American people.”
A second violation could be made from the rule banning members from participating in “disorderly or disruptive conduct.”
Already, some House members have proposed legislation that would ban the display of any foreign flag on the House floor, ever.
The letter specifically names Reps. Seth Magaziner of Rhode Island, Bill Pascrell Jr. of New Jersey and Diana DeGette of Colorado.

Just The News: “President Joe Biden on Thursday claimed the recording of his interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur about his retention of classified documents should not be released due to executive privilege just hours before House Republicans were set to move toward holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for not releasing the recordings.
The Justice Department’s Legal Counsel Office said the recording should be considered protected by executive privilege, and Garland should not be punished for not releasing it, Associate Attorney General Carlos Uriatre said.
“I write to inform you that the President has asserted executive privilege over the requested audio recordings and is making a protective assertion of privilege over any remaining materials responsive to the subpoenas that have not already been produced,” Uriatre wrote in a letter Thursday, according to CNN.
“It is the longstanding position of the executive branch held by administrations of both parties that an official who asserts the president’s claim of executive privilege cannot be held in contempt of Congress,” he also wrote, per the Associated Press.
The classified documents probe did not result in any charges being brought against the president, with Hur’s report concluding that a jury would likely find him to be a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

then if the maggot is alive, he can be embarrassed and perhaps stripped of his pension and remaining benefits because he abused his office to obtain and sell classified docs.

Just The News: “Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) ordered the removal of non-citizens from the state’s voter rolls after more than 100 were found registered despite confirming their lack of U.S. citizenship.
On Tuesday, LaRose directed all 88 counties to begin a removal process for non-citizens on Ohio’s voter rolls following a review by his office’s Public Integrity Division and Office of Data Analytics and Archives. The review analyzed data from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and found 137 voter registrations of non-citizens who had twice confirmed their lack of U.S. citizenship.
State law requires non-citizens to confirm to the BMV twice that they are not U.S. citizens. The secretary of state’s office will send two notices to the Ohio residents to either cancel their voter registration or confirm their U.S. citizenship. If they do not respond to the notices, then they will be removed from the state voter rolls.
“It’s important to recognize that some of these registrations may be the result of an honest mistake,” LaRose said in a statement. “These may be well-meaning people trying to pursue the American dream, and communication barriers sometimes result in a registration form being submitted in error. We need to help them get that cleared up before an accidental registration becomes an illegal vote that could result in a felony conviction or even deportation.”
LaRose’s office also asked the Biden administration to provide citizenship data from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ SAVE database, federal district court records, and databases from the Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration.”

Too bad it’s only 3 students….
Just The News: “Students at the University of Oklahoma sued the school on Wednesday over its use of affirmative action, claiming the university favored black students when it came to awarding financial aid.
The lawsuit comes after the United States Supreme Court put an end to race-based decision making when it comes to college admissions last June, which it claimed violated students’ 14th Amendment rights guaranteeing equal protection. The Supreme Court ruled that benefits awarded to students should be tied to their individual character and contributions, rather than based on race.
The three undergraduate students who filed the lawsuit said the university put a high emphasis on racial diversity, particularly black students, via “race conscious” programs on campus. Black students also allegedly received more grants compared to other students, based on enrollment data the university reported to the Department of Education from 2009-2022, according to Fox News.
“Racial discrimination in all of its forms is illegal and immoral, and we intend to vindicate that principle in this lawsuit,” David Thompson, the attorney for the students, told the outlet.
One student claimed that she was told financial aid was not typically available to “students like her” but would have been available if she was black. All three students in the lawsuit identify as white and non-Hispanic. The students also claimed they were excluded from a three-day “Welcome Black Weekend” orientation for new students. The lawsuit adds that it cannot show the full extent of the racism on the campus, because the university has deleted some diversity pages from its website.
“In an effort to obscure the extent to which it has engaged in race-based decision making, the University of Oklahoma has recently deleted many webpages with information about its diversity and race-based programs,” the lawsuit alleged. “It is therefore difficult to determine the full extent of the University’s race-based programs.”
The lawsuit names university President Joseph Harroz, Chief Enrollment Officer Jeff Blahnik, Director of Financial Aid Services Courtney Henderson, and Student Engagement Director Dorion Billups as defendants.”

Personally, I don’t like overly broad bans like this but leave it to thugs to destroy more of our freedoms! I suppose an alternate course would require people to prove the mask is a medical necessity but that would just add another layer of admin procedures on top of already unnecessary hoops for the cops to jump thru and pretty much impossible in a mob/crowd scenario.
Just The News: “Both chambers of the North Carolina state legislature have now passed a ban on wearing face masks in public, even for medical reasons, after anti-Israel protesters used the masks to conceal their identities during recent demonstrations.
Thousands of college students and protesters have been arrested nationwide over anti-Israel protests and encampments on college campuses. But the students partaking in the protests have been difficult to identify in some cases, because of face masks that were first implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although face masks are no longer required in public, some people with medical conditions still opt to use them in public settings.
The bill passed the GOP-controlled state Senate on Wednesday in a vote on party lines, which included 30 people voting in favor of the legislation, and 15 voting against. Five people were absent, the Hill reported. It passed the House last week, and now goes to the desk of the Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, who could veto it. However, should he issue the veto, Republicans have a supermajority in both chambers that could override it.
The main crux of the bill is focused on increasing punishments for people who wear masks while committing crimes and for people that block traffic during protests. But the safety concerns are the most controversial. Republican supporters of the bill said that eliminating face masks, even for medical conditions, would help law enforcement crack down on unlawful protests, which recently broke out at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Critics of the bill said the masks made things safer for people who were immunocompromised, including those who were undergoing cancer treatments. Democratic state Sen. Sydney Batch said she and her family wore masks in public after the pandemic to help keep her safe while she was undergoing chemotherapy for her cancer.
One conservative state senator, Buck Newton, brushed off concerns that the law was overly broad, claiming that he expected law enforcement to use common sense when it comes to arrests, and that “Granny” was not getting arrested before the pandemic.
“You say, ‘Well, this wasn’t a problem before COVID,’” Democratic Sen. Natasha Marcus said Tuesday in response, during discussions on the bill, per the Associated Press. “The world is different now. We can’t go back to when pandemics didn’t happen.”
Newton said he was open to revisiting the law and amending it if there are too many issues.”

I know – then the cops would have to go thru the ridiculous hoops of investigating and getting proof. That would take days and even then, their medical providers would have to be subpoenaed in many cases.

NF: I REALLY like Byron Donalds…hmmm…future FL Governor perhaps?
EXCERPT: “The United States House of Representatives passed a series of three police bills on Wednesday, including a crime bill that would give Congress more power over sentencing in Washington, D.C., which passed with the help of 18 Democrats.
The legislation comes as Washington D.C. witnesses high crime rates, including carjackings in downtown D.C. Last year, the nation’s capital recorded its highest number of homicides since 1997, according to USA Today. The high crime rates led to recall efforts for two of the city’s council-members.
The new legislation prevents the D.C. City Council from pursuing soft-on-crime sentences for younger people, and prohibits city officials from changing sentencing laws. The bill was passed in a 225-181 vote, according to Politico.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer praised the passage of the D.C. crime bill, which was sponsored by Oversight Committee member Rep. Byron Donalds, a Florida Republican…..”

Repubs push back against the maggot’s claim of executive privilege
FTA
The White House asserted executive privilege at the request of Garland, who wrote to the president on Wednesday.
In their contempt reports, Republicans stated that the DOJ does not get to determine what information is useful to their investigation, and argued that the verbal nuances of an audio recording provide unique insight into a subject that are not reflected in a transcript.
“The Constitution does not permit the executive branch to dictate to Congress how to proceed with an impeachment inquiry or to conduct its oversight,” the report reads.
Republicans, meanwhile, argue in their report that while the transcripts of the interviews reflect what was said, “they do not reflect important verbal context, such as tone or tenor, or nonverbal context, such as pauses or pace of delivery.”

Joe Biden repeatedly denied Trump’s claims of privilege in authorizing NARA to turn over presidential records to Congress. Biden claimed Congress’ investigation into Jan 6 “insurrection” outweighed presidential privilege claims. Judge Tanya Chutkan agreed. 3 Dem judges including Ketanji Brown Jackson upheld Chutkan’s order. So now House GOP has a framework of recent case law to challenge Biden’s privilege claims related to denying Congress the recording of his interview with Robert Hur—by using Biden’s own words.

“Jimmy Carter’s Grandson Says 99-Year-Old Former President ‘Coming to the End’”
ENTIRE ARTICLE: “President Jimmy Carter, 99, has been in hospice care since February 2023. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, died aged 96 in November, and the Carter family now says the former president is also “coming to the end.”
Carter “has been in hospice, as you know, for almost a year and a half now, and he really is, I think, coming to the end that, as I’ve said before, there’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him, and there’s a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end and I think he has been there in that space,” said his grandson, Jason Carter.
Carter, a Democrat, served one term from 1977 to 1981. He had previously been a Georgia lawmaker and governor and was nominated to the Trilateral Commission by the late David Rockefeller in 1973. He incorporated many Trilateral Commission members into his administration, including his vice president, Walter Mondale.
Carter is one of the more unpopular presidents in modern times. He faced a bruising primary challenge from the late Senator Edward ‘Ted’ Kennedy before losing his reelection fight against Ronald Reagan. However, 13 quarters into his term, Joe Biden polls worse than Carter did at the same point in his presidency. Biden polls worse than any president of the post-war era.”

“Trump is a Lightning Rod”
PEPE LIVES MATTER, MAY 16, 2024
“Think about what would happen if they actually threw Trump in jail during the election cycle.
Trump unveiled just how corrupt the system was, as if he was a lightning rod, destined to fulfill this role. He caused an irrevocable change in me and millions of other people. Our eyes have been opened. And now that system is attempting to put him in jail, frame him for treason, and implement God knows what other schemes just to enact revenge. They were comfortable living in the shadows. Light has exposed evil. An unveiling. An apocalypse.
If they throw Trump in jail after all of this:
He’d look like a living martyr. He is a man of the people, willing to take every sling and arrow to show people the truth. Therefore, he truly is one of the most important politicians in American history. What he started cannot be undone. It’s like a domino effect that has repercussions unknown for generations.
If they throw Trump in jail, he’ll become more than a man. He’s become a symbol for the people. He’s become an idea. His public battle has become a visceral tool of awakening millions of the otherwise sleeping masses.
Nothing they do to him will cause his mission to fail because this isn’t about him. It’s about the people he represents. The truth is inevitable.”

“The Curious Case of Ihor Kolomoisky—Volodomyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian government have labeled the former comedian’s longtime patron as enemy number one.”
JORDAN SCHACHTEL, MAY 16, 2024
EXCERPT: “Ihor Kolomoisky should be a household name for observers of the current conflict between NATO powers and Russia.
He is one of the most consequential figures in Ukraine. Yet somehow, there is very little corporate media interest in covering his story, and especially, the seeming gross miscarriage of justice in the Kyiv government’s relentless pursuit against his individual rights.
Once the most powerful man in Ukraine, Mr Kolomoisky, who is now indefinitely relegated to a jail cell, knows where all of the bodies are buried, both figuratively and literally, and powerful forces seem to have conspired to silence him indefinitely.
So who is Ihor Kolomoisky, anyway?
Born in Dnipro, Ukraine (while it was part of the Soviet Union), Mr Kolomoisky capitalized on the opportunities in the “import-export business” that surfaced with the collapse of the USSR to later become both arguably the wealthiest and the most influential man in Ukraine. He once owned Ukraine’s largest private bank, prior to its state nationalization. He also owned Ukraine’s most influential media company. He even owned Burisma when it employed Hunter Biden (more on this in a moment).
Undoubtedly a controversial figure, he once funded Ukrainian hardline militias. For some time, Kolomoisky effectively ran his own foreign policy in eastern Ukraine. When his posture was antagonistic to Russia, NATO powers took a hands-off approach to any potential malfeasance in the region.
Most notably, the billionaire oligarch was the sole patron for Ukrainian president Volodomyr Zelensky, having financed his entire television, business, and political career. In 2019, Kolomoisky threw all of his political and financial power behind Zelensky, facilitating his rise to the presidency. Simply put, without the economic, political, and societal capital provided by Ihor Kolomoisky, you would have never heard of Volodomyr Zelensky.
President Zelensky and his old benefactor are no longer aligned, to put it mildly. Zelensky has spent the last year continually siccing his internal security services (Ukraine’s SBU) on Mr. Kolomoisky, charging his former boss with a series of “corruption” actions…..

“Pfizer Says They’re ‘Deeply Sorry’ For Violating 5 Regulatory Codes And Illegally Promoting Their Vaccine”
By Asheea Smith, Published May 13, 2024 5:38PM EDT
EXCERPT: “According to the Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority, Pfizer promoted unlicensed medicines and violated a total of five regulatory codes.
The pharmaceutical giant has been accused of “bringing discredit” to the industry after employees promoted the COVID-19 vaccine across social media during the height of the pandemic.
Per Biopharma-reporter, medical director of Pfizer Dr. Berkley-Phillips retweeted a post on Twitter, now known as X, stating: “Our vaccine candidate is 95% effective in preventing COVID and 94% effective in people over 65 years old.”
“We will file all of our data with health authorities within days. Thank you to every volunteer in our trial, and to all who are tirelessly fighting this pandemic.” Per the medical news outlet, fellow UK employees retweeted the reported misleading post.
The complaint against Pfizer cites the “promotional use of Twitter.” The panel ruled a “breach” for the following clauses of the 2019 code, including bringing discredit to the pharmaceutical industry, promoting unlicensed medicine, making a misleading claim, not listing adverse effects, and failing to maintain high standards.
The complainant alleged the tweet included relative efficacy rates without any information about absolute efficacy rates and that no safety data or safety information was provided, and therefore that Pfizer had misleadingly and illegally promoted its COVID-19 vaccine….”

I am adding a short daily prayer to the board. I would invite each of you, if you wish, to also add one or maybe two of your own liking. I do not want to stifle anyone but please limit yourself to one or two religious postings. here’s one I found that I liked.
