1) Where did the American custom of Mother’s Day begin?
2) What flower is associated with Mother’s Day?

3) Mother’s Day is the busiest day of the year for _____.
4) What is the average age for first-time moms in the United States?
5) What percentage of moms in the U.S. are single parents?

6) How do children in Serbia celebrate Mother’s Day?
7) What ancient Roman festival is considered a forerunner of Mother’s Day?
8) What year was the first Mother’s Day celebrated in the United States?

9) Which U.S. president made Mother’s Day a national holiday?
10) How many diapers does the average mom change during the first three months of motherhood?

ANSWERS:
1. West Virginia: While some countries have a multi-century history of celebrating mothers, the modern American version of the holiday didn’t begin until the early 20th century when Anna Jarvis organized the first Mother’s Day service of worship and celebration at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which serves as the International Mother’s Day Shrine today.
2. Carnations: Everyone knows that giving flowers on Mother’s Day is a time-honored tradition, but did you know that carnations are the official Mother’s Day flower? Pink carnations represent gratitude and love. Dark red carnations signify love and affection. And white carnations are traditional flowers to wear in remembrance of a mother who is no longer living.

3. Restaurants: According to the National Restaurant Association, Mother’s Day is the most popular day of the year to eat in a restaurant. In a survey conducted by the association, 51 percent of mothers said they prefer to eat out on the holiday because they do most of the cooking at home and dining out gives them a much-needed break.
4. 27 years old: The average age of first-time mothers has risen dramatically since 1972, when it was 21. Today, the average first-time mother is 27 years old.

5. 24%: According to Pew Research Center data, about one in four, or roughly 24 percent of mothers in the U.S. are raising kids without a spouse or partner.
6. Tying Mother up: Serbia has what is probably one of the most unusual Mother’s Day customs. Children creep into their mother’s bedroom first thing in the morning and tie her up! In order to be released, it is customary for mothers to bribe their children with treats. However, it should be noted that mothers aren’t the only ones tied up on their special day. A week earlier, on Children’s Day, children are tied up and must agree to behave before they are released.
7. Hilaria: The Romans celebrated Hilaria on March 25 in honor of Cybele, an Anatolian mother goddess known as Magna Mater (“Great Mother”). The manner of celebration during the time of the republic is unknown, except that Valerius Maximus mentions games in honor of the mother of the gods. At the time of the empire, there was a solemn procession, followed by all kinds of games and amusements, including a masquerade.
8. 1907: Ann Reeves Jarvis was a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War. She and Julia Ward Howe (author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”) spent years campaigning for the creation of a “Mother’s Day For Peace” where mothers would ask that their husbands and sons were no longer killed in wars. After Ann’s death in 1905, her daughter took up the fight, and the first American Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1907 at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church.

9. Woodrow Wilson: In 1908, the U.S. Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother’s Day an official holiday, joking that they would also have to proclaim a “Mother-in-law’s Day”. But just six years later, in 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating that Mother’s Day be held on the second Sunday in May as a national holiday to honor mothers.
10. 700: In the first month of life, newborns average up to 8 to 10 diaper changes per day. And over the first three months (the newborn stage), babies go through about 700 diapers.
So…how did you do?

In the South, when I was a child, roses are the Mother’s Day flower. Mothers were given bouquets of roses, and men wore rose buds to church on their lapels to symbolize the status of their mother – a red rose bud meant their mother was still living and a white rose meant she was deceased.

Morning GA!
hope you feel better today!
I never heard of a flower for Mom’s at all. maybe they thought roses were too valentine-ish later…who knows? everything is commercial now a days.
we always bought Mom flowers or plants she wanted for her garden. she is not fond of indoor flowers, so we bought tomato plants, pepper plants or geraniums for her large pots outside.

How cool to give her what she wanted for her garden. Is she still able to work in her yard?

no, not for some time. she walks with a walker. so when we visit this month, i will weed her 2 small garden and plant flowers in the one. she no longer wants veggies planted–because she can’t chase the chipmunks who eat her tomatoes…so we bring her some from our garden. and the other small garden now has azaleas and a bush that gets snowball size flowers that changes colors…i forget the name.

Every Southern garden used to have a Hibiscus, called the Confederate Rose, that changes to 3 colors, from white in the morning to pink to red in the evening. https://www.dreamstime.com/hibiscus-mutabilis-three-times-color-change-flower—flower-n-cotton-rosemallow—the-changes-white-morning-pink-day-image99803853

Morning All!
I came down this morning and saw orioles (2, maybe 3) on the hummer feeders we leave out. (their jelly dish doesn’t stay out all night) and the poor hummers were sitting on the front railing waiting for a chance to get to their feeders.
no one flew at my face tho as i put out everyone’s other feeders…lol
chilly here…about 40*…but the sun is up!

Morning, Pat! Sure is nice to see the sunshine this morning! I put all 8 hanging pots back out and all the feeders back up. Wheezer hasn’t been here since early yesterday. Shacking up again or in his hidey hole hiding from the storm! And the first Oriole just showed up! I’m waiting for that bitch squirrel to try to climb the pole/slinky! That will be fun!
Thankfully, no damage anywhere from the wind yesterday. There was a long peal of thunder after I signed off and moved to my recliner that literally made the house shake. It lasted so long and started sounding like a train, which usually means a tornado, so I got up to look outside – no tornado, thankfully, and that was pretty much the end of the thunder. The pictures on my LR wall shake routinely when a train goes by nearby but this had the whole house trembling!

Morning Filly!
WOW…glad it wasn’t anything but noise!
we had a grosbeak at the jelly this morning and a squirrel came on the deck but didn’t go near the jelly.
I am going out in a little bit (if it warms up some) to weed the garden. today or tomorrow are our only days without rain in the forecast till next week! sigh.

Looks like we’ve got some decent weather coming up, w/only occasional rain possibilities. But, then, those forecasters don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground so….I take their prognostications as simply possibilities around here!

I can say nothing negative about all that Fitton has done for this country – and that’s a LOT – but, on a personal level – he is a VERY vain person about showing off his buff bod! Every single shot of him like this shows him in a tight shirt with short, tight sleeves so you can’t help but notice his muscles! I know he is a body-builder but really – come on, dude! To me, that’s kind of in the same category as women who MUST show their boobs all the time!

interesting…
Ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan says a draft General Assembly resolution recognizing the Palestinians as qualified to become a full UN member goes against the founding UN Charter, and would give the Palestinians the de facto status and rights of a state.
“If it is approved, I expect the United States to completely stop funding the UN and its institutions, in accordance with American law,” Erdan says, noting that adoption by the General Assembly would not change anything on the ground.
Under US law, Washington cannot fund any UN organization that grants full membership to any group that does not have the “internationally recognized attributes” of statehood. The US halted funding in 2011 for the UN cultural agency UNESCO after the Palestinians became a full member.
“It remains the US view that the path toward statehood for the Palestinian people is through direct negotiations,” says Nate Evans, a spokesperson for the US mission to the UN.
“We are aware of the resolution and reiterate our concerns with any effort to extend certain benefits to entities when there are unresolved questions as to whether the Palestinians currently meet the criteria under the Charter,” he says.
The US is thought to provide approximately one-third of the UN’s budget.

https://thepostmillennial.com/maxine-waters-claims-right-wing-groups-are-training-in-the-hills-to-attack-if-trump-not-elected
Our Take: “They are hard selling the civil war narrative, and Mad Max as the messenger is a perfect red pill for normies. Everyone will recall Maxine Waters’ calls for violence during President Trump’s first term, and now she’s projecting her own conduct on her political opponents. And it’s obvious.
In reality, leftist agitators are cosplaying as Islamic revolutionaries and, as we’ve been predicting, they are now leaving the campuses.
On Monday, protestors in Denver stopped traffic and harassed truck drivers and other motorists. If history repeats, overt violence is around the corner. But Max is worried about militias… is she concerned about opposition to her handlers’ ongoing color revolution?
Whether law enforcement will permit another mostly peaceful summer remains to be seen, and likely depends on jurisdiction and venue. Stay tuned and stay safe out there everyone!” — Ashe in America

https://www.theepochtimes.com/us/florida-bans-indoctrination-in-teacher-training-programs-5643245?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=ZeroHedge
Our Take: “I believe these politicians have noble intent for stopping the indoctrination of teachers through teacher training programs — but is that an achievable goal for government? Is the government also going to ban collegiate coursework in social justice and its underlying themes?
They can try. I doubt they can legislate away multiple generations of Marxist educators and their core mission, and the attempt will ensure the latter’s evolution. Who is monitoring that?
Will transplant teachers from other states be reeducated?
Will there be ideological tests prior to becoming a teacher?
What do the enforcement mechanisms for this legislation comprise?
Remember that government powers are not restricted to the party in control at the moment. How might this level of government power be wielded by democrats, should they regain power in Florida?” — Ashe in America

And the orioles are multiplying – just saw a m/f pair on the feeder, w/a 3rd in the honeysuckle, while a sparrow was also eating jelly at the same time! I also put out 3 nectar feeders, 2 in the back and 1 in front. Haven’t seen any hummers but I’m sure they are around – I just can’t see them from here.

“USDA silences scientists after USRTK interview requests”
Posted: May 7, 2024 by Rebecca Raney, U.S. Right to Know
EXCERPTS: “Two scientists who sought permission to speak with U.S. Right to Know were silenced last month by officials at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The officials gave no reason for their denials of the interviews.
In one case, a public relations specialist declined an interview after the scientist said that he was “happy to arrange a time to speak with you” in an email exchange with a reporter. In the other case, officials denied a request after the scientist submitted it to the communications department for approval.
In all, U.S. Right to Know requested interviews with seven USDA scientists on the matter, which did not relate to the scientists’ work for the federal government. Several scientists did not respond to the inquiry.
Jeff Ruch, Pacific director of the nonprofit group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, said that the First Amendment rights of government scientists are under attack. “The ability of scientists to speak and write on matters of public concern, whether in their field or not, right now is up in the air,” he said.
The topic of the interviews proposed by U.S. Right to Know dealt with a component of the researchers’ citizenship activities in the scientific community and fell outside their duties for the federal government…..”

BREAKING: In a flagrant violation of NY’s rules of evidence and judicial ethics guidelines, the judge is allowing Stormy Daniels to “run wild” with her highly prejudicial testimony, running roughshod over the objections of Trump’s attorneys, and allowing Daniels to vividly discuss every last salacious detail about the alleged interaction she had with Trump. Prosecutors are asking how tall she is relative to Trump and whether there was a power dynamic between them. Now asking about their alleged sexual affair, the position they were in, whether they were intoxicated, “uncomfortable,” and “how they closed it off.” Completely out of line!!
