Lucky Charms

Lucky charms: Some people swear by them while others think they’re silly. But regardless of whether a rabbit’s foot or a favorite number really attracts Lady Luck, lucky charms can be fun and make you feel more optimistic. When you have fun and feel more positive, that attitude makes you luckier, too!

If you don’t have a favorite lucky symbol already, maybe it’s time to find one that inspires you. Here are some popular lucky charms from around the world.

Lucky Four-Leaf Clover Charms

Four-leaf clovers are an ancient Irish symbol of luck. Among the Celtic, it was a common belief that a four-leaf clover could help people see fairies and avoid their mischief, a common source of bad luck.  The four leaves were rumored to have mystical powers representing positive attributes. Some legends attribute them to faith, hope, love, and luck, while others say they’ll bring fame, wealth, health, and faithful love.

There are many variations of clover that always have four leaves, but the lucky ones come from the white clover plant, Trifolium repens. “Trifolium” literally means three-leaved; four-leaved plants are a genetic mutation.  True four-leaf clovers are rare, with only about one in 10,000 plants carrying the lucky leaves.  To know you’ve found a true four-leaf clover, look for one leaflet that’s smaller than the others. If all four leaflets are the same size, you are probably looking at the wrong variety of clover.

Lucky Horseshoe Charms

Horseshoes are one of the oldest lucky superstitions, with various legends from different cultures attributing lucky powers to them. One legend says that horseshoes are lucky because they are made of iron. Mischievous fairies couldn’t stand the touch of iron, so they shied away from houses that had horseshoes on them.

Another legend attributes lucky horseshoes to Saint Dunstan. According to the legend, the devil commanded Dunstan, who was a blacksmith, to shoe his horse. Instead, Dunstan nailed a horseshoe to the devil’s foot. He only agreed to remove it and ease the devil’s pain when he received a guarantee that the devil would stay away from any house with a horseshoe on the door. After that, any house with a horseshoe was guaranteed to be lucky.

Lucky Dice (Fuzzy or Otherwise) Charms

Many games of chance are played with dice, so it’s no surprise that they became a symbol of luck. You might be surprised to know that, unlike many of the lucky charms on this list, fuzzy dice are a relatively recent invention. During World War II, fighter pilots would fly missions with terrible odds of coming home again. They’d bring lucky charms with them in the hopes of tipping the odds in their favor. Gambling items like cards and dice were popular charms to bring aboard the fighter planes. Knowing the WWII tradition, Deccofelt Corp started marketing fuzzy dice to hang on the rearview mirrors of cars in 1959, and a fad was born.

Ladybugs as Good Luck Charms

Ladybugs are popular insects worldwide, and many cultures believe they bring good luck. In German-speaking countries, they are literally called lucky bugs: “Glückskäfer”

How can a ladybug make you luckier? Some cultures say that if a ladybug lands on you and you don’t brush it off, your luck will improve. Others say that they’re a sign of impending love. For example, if a man and a woman see a ladybug at the same time, they’ll fall in love. In Belgium, a ladybug crawling across a maiden’s hand was a sign that she would soon be married.

And that’s not the only way ladybugs bring luck. Farmers believed a large number of ladybugs in the spring was a harbinger of a good harvest that year. Be careful, however, around these cheerful-looking insects. Killing a ladybug can bring you misfortune. When you pick your lucky charm, keep in mind that all ladybugs are not created equal in the luck department; The deeper red their color and the more spots they have, the luckier you’ll be!

Lucky Number Seven Charms

Growing up, you may have heard that seven was the luckiest number, but did anyone tell you why? The number seven is connected with luck, perfection, and knowledge in many cultures.

One reason might be that the number seven has special mathematical properties. The ancient Greeks called 7 “the perfect number,” the sum of 3 (triangle) and 4 (square), which are perfect forms. Seven is an important number in other ways, too:

There are 7 days of the week.

There are 7 colors in the rainbow.

7 planets are visible to the naked eye.

The 7th son of a 7th son is supposed to be especially gifted and lucky.

7 is a winning roll in many games of chance.

How can you adopt the lucky seven as a lucky charm? You could make a slot machine showing all sevens or you could be more subtle and pick 21 as your token: three sevens.

Lucky Number Eight Charms

In China, however, the number 8 is considered the luckiest number, not 7. The reason is much clearer than with the number 7: Its luck-bringing properties stem from a play on words. In Chinese, the word for the number 8 sounds a lot like the word for prosperity. The number 8, with its two graceful curves, is also a balanced number. Balance and harmony are believed to be vital ingredients for a lucky life.

Lucky Rabbit Foot Charms

Lucky rabbit foot keychains, whether real or faux, are popular symbols of luck. The original legend says that the left hind foot of a rabbit that is captured in a cemetery at night can ward off evil magic. Luckily, you don’t have to go through that much effort to have a fun rabbit’s foot charm for inspiration. There are fake rabbits’ feet for sale if you don’t want to harm an actual bunny.

More Lucky Animal Charms

Rabbits aren’t the only animals to be used as a lucky charm. Here are some more animals you can use as your lucky symbol:

In feng shui, goldfish are said to attract luck and prosperity. Dragons and horses are also considered lucky.

In Germany, lucky pigs (“Glücksschwein”) are given as tokens to wish friends and family a happy and lucky New Year.

Turtles and tortoises are considered lucky due to their long lifespans.

Ancient Egyptians considered the scarab beetle to be lucky.

In Korea, the swallow is considered a sign of good luck thanks to the story of Heungbu and Nolbu, where a sparrow rewarded a kind deed with prosperity.

Rainbow Good Luck Charms

Rainbows are considered lucky because of the legend that says that if you dig at the end of a rainbow, you’ll find a pot of gold. Rainbows are great lucky symbols because they’re beautiful and cheery.

Lucky Coin Charms

Most of us know the old saying, “Find a penny, pick it up, and all that day you’ll have good luck!” Those found pennies are fun luck-bringers. Some people say that not just any penny lying on the ground is lucky, but that lucky pennies have to be found face-up.

Lucky Bamboo Charms

Lucky bamboo is technically not bamboo at all, but a close relative called Dracaena. It’s a hardy, long-lived plant, which might account for its lucky properties.

The more stalks a lucky bamboo plant has, the more luck it brings. A plant with three stalks is said to bring happiness, wealth and longevity to the owners. What benefits would more stalks bring you? Of course, any green plant is a good lucky charm in your home or office. According to The Sill, studies show they improve your mood and clean the air indoors.

Dreamcatcher Luck Charms

Dreamcatchers come from Native American lore. Looking like a web or net stretched over a loop and decorated with bright beads and feathers, they catch bad dreams as they enter a household.  By capturing the disturbing dreams, they make the owner happier, more balanced, and luckier. Plus, they look cool, too.

To use dreamcatchers as lucky charms, hang one inside your office window to keep bad luck away. Or buy a pair of dreamcatcher earrings or a dreamcatcher necklace to bring luck with you wherever you go.

Evil Eyes to Ward Off Bad Luck

While you may give someone the evil eye when they annoy you, people used to take malevolent looks much more seriously. Usually triggered by jealousy, giving someone an evil eye was supposed to cause all manner of suffering from mental illness to physical maladies. For thousands of years, people have been using evil eye talismans, or nazur, to ward off the bad luck caused by these curses.

The evil eye lucky charm takes several different forms. Some cultures use a hand with an eye in its center for protection. Others use simple blue or green beads. But some of the most popular and beautiful evil eye talismans come from Turkey. They use glass beads with alternating blue and white circles to bring themselves more luck.

Acorns as Lucky Symbols

Because of its association with the Norse god Odin, the lowly acorn is also considered a symbol of luck. Odin hung himself from an oak tree to gain knowledge, so the acorn has come to symbolize wisdom. The Norse also believed that acorns could bring divine protection and placed them in the windows of their homes to ward off lightning. During the Norse Invasion, Englishmen would carry acorns in their pockets, perhaps hoping that they’d make their conquerors more sympathetic.

As the saying, “great oaks from little acorns grow ” indicates, acorns also signify fertility, youth, and prosperity.

    1. Good mornin’ Miss Pat – It’s 37º right now here in N FL! How about that?!

I’m home for a couple of days to try to clean out weedy garden beds and make the hard to look cared for and the house look lived in. I keep lights and a radio, tuned to a 24/7 classical station, on timers when I’m away. The dollar weed had completely taken over the front flower beds. I’ve pulled out 8 big black bags of weeds yesterday. Man I’m sore and out of shape! Had to take an Anaprox and soak in the tub last night.

Sally Q is back to her feisty ways ugly manner/language toward me and I’m glad for some time away. The pacemaker which controls the low heart rate – it has made a big difference in circulation and edema in her feet and hands. We are managing the rapid out of control heart rate with medication. However, we are dealing with a progressive disease and it’s only a matter of time until the heart condition (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) may become a crisis again.

      1. The safety chest strap I was making for her SureHands ceiling track lift worked for me – but not for her. I’m going to have to add adjustable buckles to the straps that will keep her arms down. I’ll do that when I get back.

I have a car load of stuff, sewing machine, fabrics, buckles, strapping, velcro, etc. to make things for her wheelchair.

I did make 5 new black covers for the leg pillows that go on her wheelchairs – to replace the ones that were lost/stolen in the hospital.

I’ve never heard of dollar weed before.
You are a marvel!!! EIGHT bags of weeds? that’s impressive!!! i would require DAYS or relief for sure.
You are a patient and loving soul. I can only stand so much grumpiness from hubby, then i just dish it right back and he stops and apologizes.
I saw my Dad get that way with my mom sometimes and Mom was an angel like you. I try, but sometimes it gets my Irish up (and I’m not Irish…LOL)

          1. that’s a shame.
i “taught” my hubby how to apologize when we were first dating. I never let him get away with the “i’m sorry YOU” stuff. that’s not apologizing for his actions, that’s placing the blame on me.
he starts his apologies with “I’m sorry I” –he’s learned to take responsibility for his own actions.
            it goes a long way

    2. Good morning, Pat! Tell me about dark! That is what takes “getting used to” for me! I’ve got 41 on the thermometer this morning. Possible light rain in the forecast.

Ah, yes, lucky charms! When I was still in VA, I ordered from PCH a package of 10 clear plastic hearts with a cream-colored angel inside to give to friends. I’ve given out all but 2 and carry one in my purse; I gave one to my GS years ago after his Mom died (he had a weird experience when he swore he saw her sitting in the passenger seat – he almost had a terrible wreck and believed that she saved him) and Bren/Kal when they were here, too. IDR now – did I send one to you? I know I sent one to someone….

The horseshoe is included in a long-time NE Husker tradition:

“Tunnel walk — One of the biggest Husker traditions takes place before the team even steps on the field.

Introduced in 1994, the tunnel walk begins with the football players leaving the locker room and gathering on the red carpet. Fans line the red carpet and pump up the team as they near the gates to the field, and a video shows the players running out of the locker room and down the tunnel to the field. Screams fill the stadium as the team gathers around its coach and prepare to storm the field. “Sirius” by the Alan Parsons Project serves as background music for this tradition.

Before the team storms the field, however, each player jumps and touches a lucky horseshoe. Stories say the horseshoe was found in the dirt at the location where the stadium was to be built in 1923. Fans are able to take pictures with the lucky horseshoe before and after Husker games.”

Mike Johnson wants $60 Billion LOAN to Ukraine…

‘House Speaker Mike Johnson and the chairmen of multiple committees dealing with national security are working on their own bill that would treat some aid to Kiev as a long-term loan.’ — A Anglin

The first question a responsible lender asks is, what is the credit rating of the borrower?

    S&P Global offers an answer:

‘We expect the Ukrainian government to begin formal discussions on debt restructuring with its private creditors in the short term and complete the process by the middle of this year.

‘We consider it a virtual certainty that Ukraine will default on its external commercial obligations.

‘As a result, we lowered our long-term foreign-currency rating on Ukraine to ‘CC’ from ‘CCC’.’

Only fools — and Congress Clowns wasting OPM (Other People’s Money) — would shower $60 billion on the deadbeat Ukies.

Mike Johnson and the RINOS should be obliged to sign on as a personal guarantor, so that he will be ruined along with US taxpayers when the Ukies upend their empty pockets.

  2. Mississippi SOS suspects maggot’s EO for registering individuals in the custody of the Bureau of Prisons is registering felons who under Mississippi law are NOT eligible to vote. Also illegals in the prison system who are NOT eligible to vote and transients who have no ties to Mississippi and are NOT eligible to vote in that state. they are creating more ghost ballots that will be harvested.

    FTA

Watson warns that the Biden administration is ignoring the voting status of the individuals involved.

“Forgive me for not necessarily trusting
the Biden administration but in Mississippi we’ve got rules and
regulations dealing with who can vote when it comes to felons, there are
disenfranchising crimes in our state and I don’t specifically think
that the Biden administration cares crossing those T’s and dotting those
I’s when it comes to making sure these folks can or can’t vote, they’re
going to register them, including illegal aliens in custody so we’ve
got major issues and that’s what led to writing this letter to Attorney
General Garland,” Watson said in a statement.

    Watson’s letter explains that the
program “provides prisoners with misleading information concerning their
right to both register and vote in Mississippi – a right which they may
    not have.”

“For example, many of the people in the
custody of the Marshals are convicted felons whom Mississippi law deems
ineligible to vote,” the letter says

“Additionally, many of those in custody
only have fleeting ties to Mississippi and do not meet the residency
requirements necessary to be a Mississippi voter.”

Watson wrote that Mississippi jails are
being prompted to “work with other reliable sources of voter information
to assist federal prisoners with voter registration, voting by mail,
    and notification of upcoming elections.”

“We are unaware of any contact with our
Office, which begs the question, which organizations are the Marshals
using to accomplish this demand?” The letter asks.

    “Many outside groups performing voter
registration and vote harvesting services are partisan entities with a
    history of being unreliable.

“There have been documented instances of these groups providing incorrect directions to voters.

“It is not proper for the Federal government to push partisan groups into the voting process in Mississippi or any other state.”

    The letter specifically addresses concerns
that illegal immigrants in the Mississippi prison system could
potentially be registered to vote through this executive order if the
    program is not closely monitored.

“Our understanding is that everyone in the
Marshals’ custody is given a form advising them of their right to
register and vote,” the letter continues.

“A prominent evangelical advocacy organization plans to significantly ramp up political spending in the 2024 election with one goal in mind: returning Donald Trump to the White House

Faith & Freedom, a conservative-leaning organization, intends to spend $62 million registering and turning out evangelical voters, texting and calling supporters, and door-knocking — $10 million more than it spent four years ago. The group is expected to, among other things, hand out 30 million pieces of literature in 125,000 churches — many of them in battleground states.

“In terms of home visits and voters reached at the door, to my knowledge it’s the largest effort on the right outside of the Republican National Committee ever,” Ralph Reed, a longtime Republican strategist and Trump ally who oversees the organization, said of the direct voter contact enterprise.

The investment underscores the degree to which the white evangelical community has allied itself with Trump”

  9. “Disney Claims Its Woke Movies Aren’t Bad, The Audience Is Sexist And Bigoted”

By Milt Harris ——Bio and Archives–March 12, 2024

EXCERPT: “There are a lot of woke companies and Disney is right near the top of the list. In fact, because of the influence they would like to exert over children and try to, they are probably the most dangerous. Bud Light’s association with a man pretending being a woman while disgusting, is more adult oriented. Disney’s is not, it’s based in evil and that is its intent.Last year Disney Movies lost $1.4 Billion dollars

As a testament to the company’s arrogance, they have unbelievably blamed their “woke” movie failures, not on their choices of content, but on the audience that watched them, or more appropriately, wisely chose not to watch them.

Last year Disney Movies lost $1.4 Billion dollars, but according to them, they had nothing to do with it. The real problem was us, we’re too neanderthal to understand their enlightened messages. The executives at Disney see us as bigoted sexists and see themselves as saviors of our inhibited souls.

A Disney executive reportedly blames sexist audience members for the recent box office failures of films like The Marvels. The movie, earning just $206 million worldwide, became The lowest-earning MCU movie of all time.

Disney had a long list of losers in 2023, with financial flops like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Haunted Mansion and Wish. Now with 2024 not looking any better, Disney has decided that the audience is a perfect scapegoat.

Matt Belloni, an entertainment reporter for Puck, published a newsletter with a statement from an unnamed Disney executive. Belloni explained that this message from the Disney executive was in response to a recent article he published which covered “whether the politicization of the Disney brand impacts box office.”

Disney has decided that the audience is a perfect scapegoat — Predictably, this was met with a harsh response from the executive, claiming that politicized audience members who “equate the perceived messaging in a film as a quality issue.”

“Everyone says “It’s the movies, stupid,” which is an easy thing for people to say. More appealing movies are a great way to jump the political issues. But more and more, our audience (or the segment of the audience that has been politicized) equate the perceived messaging in a film as a quality issue.”

“In terms of recent quality, Disney Animation’s Wish, starring Ariana DeBose received a historically low 48 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes….”

  10. “Our Republic–Our Electoral College”

By John Porter ——Bio and Archives–March 12, 2024

EXCERPT: “Please, I urge you to take a couple of minutes to read this and forward it far and wide in every way you can. Bear with me, it takes a little time to explain it properly and understandably.

I have been urged by many to explain the Electoral College vs. popular vote provision of our Constitution and the reasoning behind it (U.S. Constitution, Article 2, section 1, clause 3 and the 12th amendment). Closely analyzed, without biased political-party thinking, it shows the brilliance of the people we call the Founding Fathers in establishing this type of voting system for selecting a president. It is for that one federal government position only, because it is the only government job for which we hire someone with a nationwide election.

We must remind ourselves that when these men met to draft our constitution, there was no federal government, only states with their individual laws. Writing a Constitution was part of the process of forming the federal government. It was done in order to set the powers the states were willing to allow the federal government to have and the ones they would retain, and protect the rights of the people which could not be infringed upon by either.

The original proposal was to have the two branches of Congress together elect the president. However, it was not adopted because that would be conceding power to the federal government to elect the president. It being the only elected position representing all Americans, the states rightfully and successfully argued that they would have no voice in electing the president, and initiated the process at the state and local levels by choosing electors from each state to vote for president.

Well-known leading citizens were chosen, originally by state legislatures, now by the voters for the special purpose of selecting the president. The electors would assemble and cast the votes allotted to that state. The number of votes allotted were the state’s number of Representatives and Senators combined. Their model for this was the very structure of the Constitutional Convention itself, where each state had a number of delegates representing that state.

We must preserve and protect the Electoral College at any cost

Even though it does not function exactly as the Founders originally intended, the Electoral College remains today an essential constitutional safeguard of not only American individual liberty, but of the liberty of the states from the federal government. As stated, each state is allotted as many electoral votes as it has senators and members of the House of Representatives.

To become president of the United States of America, a person must, even today, win the national election state by state. We speak of “the presidential election” when, including Washington D. C., there are actually 51 separate elections for president. The United States is a nation of 50 separate and sovereign states. The Electoral College gives your state a voice in electing the president….”

    1. “Clinton Wins in a national popular election instead of the Electoral College

Here I give you an example of what could, and would in fact, have happened on November 8, 2016 if we had a national popular election instead of the Electoral College. This, I hope, will help one understand the true wisdom of the writers of our constitution. These numbers are from the official vote count records tabulated from every voting precinct in America.

The total popular vote count shows Donald Trump won the popular vote in 30 states and Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in 20 states plus D.C. The total count for all states for Trump was 62,979,879; for Clinton it was 65,844,954. The difference was Clinton winning the popular vote by 2,865,075. However, totaling all states excluding California, Donald Trump won the popular vote. In California the vote count was Clinton, 8,753,788 and Trump, 4,483,810. Now, let’s deduct Clinton’s California vote from her national vote: 65,844,954 – 8,753,788 = 57,091,166. Now let’s deduct Trump’s California vote from his national vote: 62,979,879 – 4,483,810 = 58,496,069. The difference is Trump winning by 1,404,903.”

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., chairman of the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight, said there are “many unanswered questions” surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021 pipe bombs that were discovered near the U.S. Capitol building.

“The suspect still remains at-large. Unfortunately, FBI has failed to provide substantive updates on the investigation despite numerous requests from congressional committees,” he said at the hearing on Tuesday titled, Three Years Later: Assessing the Law Enforcement Response to Multiple Pipe Bombs on January 6, 2021.

“Today, they have declined to participate in our hearing,” he added. Loudermilk said the Jan. 6 select hardly touched upon the pipe bombs in their final report. “Their investigation into the pipe bomb was basically non-existent,” he said, noting that the final report mentioned the pipe bomb incident 5 times.

Ranking Member Rep. Norma Torres, D-Calif., said the pipe bomb incident is an ongoing investigation. She questioned why the subcommittee is holding the hearing.

Loudermilk played a video that showed pedestrians walking by the package with the pipe bomb inside after law enforcement had discovered it was there.

In response to the video footage, Barry Black, an explosive device expert and former FBI official, acknowledged that the law enforcement’s response to the pipe bomb put people in danger.”

    1. They are accusing him of slanting the report against FJB because Hur is a registered Republican and he wants a high-ranking job under Trump if he wins this election. All of them hit on that topic at one point in their “questions!”

  12. Oh, snap! Good for WI rep Tom Tiffany – he pointed out some lies from the earlier dems, with actual quotes, and then asked…”If Biden were 60 years old rather than 80, would you prosecute him?” Hur: didn’t use hypotheticals; then TT pointed out the contradiction that Hur recommended not charging him: “There was an 80 year old grandma that came to Washington, D.C. a few years ago, did not commit a violent crime…committed a crime but did not commit a violent crime. And she was fully prosecuted. Doesn’t that seem that there is a dual system of justice, where the President is above the law?” Hur skated on not being aware of the details of that situation…

Ken Buck just resigned effective next week

At this rate, the Dems are going to take the House without an election.

Republicans really are the stupid party

Biden is asked a specific and difficult question that will incriminate him if he answers honestly, so he falls back on the familiar sly defense: 1. Delay; 2. Invoke his dead son for sympathy; 3. Feign memory loss. It’s all over the transcript. Classic con artist behavior. And it worked. Embarrassing for him that the anatomy of his dishonesty is laid bare for all to see, but his life is full of embarrassment. He is impervious. He got away with it. That’s the point. You’re the chump.

    1. Not coincidentally, the anti-TikTok legislation now being debated on the Hill would allow the federal government to force the sale of any social media platform that interferes in elections. Just so you know what’s coming in 2025.”

Judge grants Trump extension in blow to Jack Smith

    FTA –

The judge overseeing former President Donald Trump’s classified documents trial granted the former president’s legal team a 10-day extension to make filings in the case, despite opposition to the motion from special counsel Jack Smith.

Florida-based federal Judge Aileen Cannon on Monday ruled that Trump may file replies to motions by March 24, 2025.

The ruling came as a blow to prosecutors, who had argued that the schedule “has been in place for months” and that Trump’s legal team says it needs more time based on circumstances it had been aware of for years, such as Trump’s criminal trial in New York, which is scheduled to begin on March 25.

Trump is expected to attend a hearing on Thursday where his attorneys will argue that the classified documents case should be tossed.
