The rich history of Kern Studios dates back to 1932, when the first mule-drawn float was built on the back of a garbage wagon.

The Early Days

The early days of what has grown into Kern Studios started with Roy Kern, a local artist-turned-sign-painter who worked his way through the Depression by painting names and signs on the bows of freighters and barges.

Roy and his son Blaine built their first Mardi Gras float together on the back on a mule-drawn wagon in 1932. Unable to pay his mother’s medical bills, Blaine offered to paint a mural in the hospital, which caught the eye of a surgeon who was also the captain of a Mardi Gras Krewe. This captain invited Blaine to design and build floats for his Krewe, and Kern Studios was officially founded in its current form in 1947. One float led to another, and before long Blaine became the city’s leading parade designer and builder, working with Rex, Zulu and other legendary krewes.

Mr. Mardi Gras

Blaine Kern traveled throughout Europe to apprentice under the world’s leading float and costume makers. During several trips to Italy, France, and Spain, Blaine became inspired by the extravagant concepts and animation that marked the European style of float building.

He brought these ideas to New Orleans and developed the monumental scale and lavish ornamentation of today’s spectacular Mardi Gras floats. Blaine Kern was instrumental in the formative years of some of New Orleans’ biggest parades and “Super Krewes” and is still known as “Mr. Mardi Gras.”

THE CREATION OF MARDI GRAS WORLD

After many requests for private tours of Kern Studios from people wanting a sneak-peak of Mardi Gras, the Kerns decided to open up the working studio to the public. In 1984, Mardi Gras World was created as a tourist attraction to provide visitors a behind-the-scenes look of our work. Widely successful, the attraction draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world each year.

    1. Good morning….well, it’s morning – let’s leave it at that! Still feeling funky and now, since I can’t hardly eat anything, I’ve got a headache on top of it so I took some Advil this morning. I also had not eaten any BF bites the last couple of days – I ate a few and it seemed to get a little better. Weird how your system can get used to something and react negatively when it is removed. At least, that’s all I can think of. IDK but I’m sooo tired of not feeling “right,” and it makes me even more impatient and blunt. Sorry for all my bitching lately. Looks like everyone across the net is changing things – now there is a notice on Google that they are going to be “modernizing” their log-in page. Have I said lately I hate change??!!??

      Anyway, I’ve got 39 on my thermometer at the moment – it was 41 when I got up but it always drops a few degrees right before it gets light. It was super windy yesterday and last night – had to bring in the feeders. We’ve got rain coming today, into tomorrow, but they are predicting a high of 50 today, then back into the 30’s & 40’s. Hey, it’s NE – it’s what we do here! LOL

            when i get irritable (which is so obvious since i’m usually a RAY of SUNSHINE…LOL) hubby always asks if i’ve eaten lately. i get cranky and get a headache. usually disappears after i eat.
            if not…that means hubby’s at fault somewhere…LOL
            when i haven’t eaten for a long time? i can get into a fog…can’t make decisions. then it’s important i eat something soon

            1. At least you have another human you can blame – all I have is Jake! And he pissed me off last night, too. I had a bowl sitting in my sink with water in it – he KNOWS he isn’t allowed on the counters so he waits until he thinks I won’t notice. The sound of him drinking woke me up and as soon as he heard my recliner come up, I heard his feet hit the floor and he hauled ass to the bedroom, where he is now shut in! I might let him out around noon but maybe not! Asshole!

        Supreme court arguments just gave up the democrat plan. The plaintiffs lawyer said if the supreme court rules that states cannot bar Trump from ballot then congress would initiate a process where they remove Trump after he is elected.

        So, if democrats take the house you can expect them to tie up Trump with non stop efforts to remove him.

        there was an episode of 2 Broke Girls where the waitress debunked it in seconds. a customer has a “support” dog in the diner. the waitress tells her pets are not allowed. the girl points to the vest –the waitress says anyone can buy one of those on amazon. she pulls out a paper–i have a note–the waitress says…so that proves you have access to a printer.

      WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republicans managed to once again foil the plans of Republicans to accomplish anything whatsoever in Congress.

      Though the Republican party still holds a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, it has struggled to make progress on several aspects of its agenda due to the interference and obstacles placed in its way by the Republican party.

      “We really stopped us in our tracks this time,” said Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. “We have plans to accomplish some big things to help the American people and fix some of the glaring problems facing our nation, but we keep facing strong opposition from us at every turn. If we can’t find a way to overcome us, we’ll continue to keep us from getting things done. We’ve become a real problem for us.”

      The GOP’s latest embarrassing setbacks included failing to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas despite the ongoing migrant crisis at the southern border and a lopsided failure to pass Speaker Johnson’s Israel aid package. Republican lawmakers placed the blame squarely on the shoulders of Republican lawmakers. “It’s those darn Republicans blocking everything we do,” said Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz. “The Republicans would get a lot more accomplished if it weren’t for the Republicans.”

                1. LOL – yep, that I am! I learned to type when I was 9 years old on my Dad’s old manual Royal typewriter and then took 2 years of it in HS. In biology, I was the only one in the class who typed my end-of-the-year report that a lot of our grade was based on. I also used color pencils and inserted colored pictures and bound it with a ring binder. Got an A++ on that one!

      “In a Congressional hearing last spring, Gil Cisneros, then-Under Secretary for Military Readiness, announced that the Pentagon was closing its newly formed Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within its K-12 school system and reassigning its controversial DEI chief after a ten-month internal investigation.

      The Pentagon’s climb-down was a big win for OpenTheBooks.com. We had worked alongside whistleblowers, journalists, other investigative non-profits, and ranking members of Congress to expose alleged conflicts of interest, violations of military ethics policies, and radical ideologies being forced on the kids of servicemen and servicewomen.

      — Chat rooms to facilitate teacher-student conversations that are closed off to parents about sexuality and gender, and likely without their knowledge or consent.

      — Engaging four-year-olds in LGBTQ+ conversations. Elementary schools are the “perfect time” to “really show students the diversity of the gender expression and gender activity.”

      — Solidarity with the neo-Marxist Black Lives Matter organization to encourage teachers to “challenge our beliefs, examine our own biases, and reflect on how we need to evaluate the structures and systems in our classrooms.”

      — Video content on “dissent” and “equity” to “help educators facilitate classroom conversations and much-needed discussions about implicit bias and systemic racism, human rights, equity, social justice, dissent, protest, and empathy.”

      — Marxist activism to dismantle systems of “power” and “privilege.” Suggesting a refusal to teach a “white-washed” curriculum and instead teach “social justice rather than heroes, holidays, and celebrations.”

      — A teaching handbook that recommends “critical conversations” with students about race, identity, and privilege and the way “injustice” affects our lives and society. These “explicit conversations” provoke “strong emotions” and crying students are expected.

          1. It certainly is and Imgur isn’t far behind! It is a ROYAL pain to try to import pics there now. I’m thinking of trying a different host but ALL of the pics from a bunch of my opens are there. I would have to move literally 100’s of pics!!! I’ve got a total over 5K!

              1. I will….but the first thing I have to do is clear out some of them…memes that I don’t need to keep…and copy those I don’t already have and want to keep on my hard drive. That will be a VERY long process so I’ll probably hang on for a while and see what happens. IF enough people complain…maybe they will see the error of their ways.
