Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea) is one of the most strikingly beautiful birds in the North American forest. With their vibrant red plumage and jet-black wings, they stand out like beacons against the green foliage.
These migratory birds are a common sight in the eastern United States during the summer breeding season.
Breeding Male
Male Scarlet Tanagers have intense crimson-red plumage with black tails and wings. During the non-breeding season, they will molt to more modest colors and resemble a female bird, although they will retain the black wings and tail. They have black eyes and gray bills.

Female
Female Scarlet Tanagers are completely different from their male counterparts and sport dull olive-yellow and olive-green colors. Their wings and tails are darker. Females also have black eyes and gray bills.

Juvenile
Immature and juvenile Scarlet Tanagers are similar to females and are also olive-green above and yellowish below. They leave the nest around 9-15 days after hatching and the parents take care of them for only 2 more weeks after that.
Overall, birds from either sex grow to be about the same size and measure 6.3-6.7 inches in length, weigh around 0.8-1.3 ounces, and have a wingspan of 9.8-11.4 inches.
Habitat
Scarlet Tanagers mostly inhabit mature deciduous or mixed forests but you can also meet them in young successional woodlands, parks, and suburban areas that have a lot of shade trees. For successful breeding, they require at least 10-12 hectares of unfragmented forest.

They build their nest 50 feet or more above the ground on a branch that is shaded by leaves or branches and is away from the trunk. They prefer deciduous trees, especially oak. The nest itself is a flimsy cup made of small twigs, plant stalks, grasses, and other fine plant material.
Diet
Scarlet Tanagers are omnivores, although they prefer to eat insects. In summer, their diet primarily consists of various insects and invertebrates, such as moths, bees, beetles, caterpillars, ants, butterflies, flies, plant lice, termites, grasshoppers, snails, earthworms, spiders, and dragonflies.
You might see them walking along high branches, and on rare occasions on the ground, or clinging to tree trunks and probing the bark, snatching up insects as they go.

They snap up insects from leaves and flowers while hovering or perching, swallowing smaller ones whole but killing larger ones by pressing them against the tree. The birds catch flying insects from mid-air.
The other, but a smaller part of their diet consists of plant matter, specifically fruit, berries, and buds. Some of their preferred food items from this category are mulberries, sumac, huckleberries, blackberries, raspberries, and others. They resort to eating berries and other plant matter when insect populations are low.
Behavior
Scarlet Tanagers are social, but also territorial when it comes to their territories and nests during the breeding season. Males sing to defend their territories, including nests and foraging areas, which can sometimes end in confrontations and chasing.
They are monogamous birds that take care of their younglings, although they switch partners every season, and their parental care lasts for only two weeks after their offspring leave the nest. Males feed their females during nesting season.
Scarlet Tanagers are a prey item to many predators, both aerial and terrestrial. They respond differently to different threats. Tanagers swoop, mob, chase, and call at most predators, but in the case of crows and Merlins, they become quiet and alert, trying to remain unseen.
Range (and seasonal changes)
Scarlet Tanagers range in the eastern part of North America and northern and western South America. They can be seen in eastern Central America during migration.
These birds are not year-round residents and migrate based on the season. They breed in the eastern part of North America, from the southernmost reaches of Canada to northern Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, western Carolinas, and Arkansas as far as the deciduous forests go. They migrate mostly at night across the Gulf of Mexico to South America.
Wing shape
Scarlet Tanagers are quite stocky and have short and broad tails, and short but strong wings proportionate to their body. They fly straight with rapid wingbeats to catch insects from the air or hover near branches, trunks, and leaf clusters to snatch up insects.
Fun Facts
When Scarlet Tanagers catch a bee, wasp, or hornet, they scrape it against the tree to remove their stinger.
Scarlet Tanagers face many threats caused by exposure, lack of food, predation, forest fragmentation, and parasitism. For example, Cowbirds lay eggs in their nests if the tanagers don’t notice, and the tanagers can’t tell the difference and raise the Cowbird’s offspring along with their own.
Many cultures and beliefs hold Scarlet Tanagers and tanagers overall in high regard. They’re believed to be sacred birds, a symbol of good luck, hope, and new beginnings.
The oldest known Scarlet Tanager lived to be at least 11 years and 11 months old. However, in the wild, their life expectancy is usually lower.

Vocalization
Scarlet Tanager’s song is a beautiful series of 4-5 chirruping phrases that have a warbling quality to them. Males sing from a higher perch to defend their territory and whereas females sing as well, then their song is softer and has fewer syllables.
Scarlet Tanagers have many different calls for different purposes. The most common and distinctive one is a higher-pitched chick followed by a lower burr sound. They screech when intruders are near and give more indistinctive chips and twitters when nesting, feeding, and communicating.

Outrage as Massachusetts Dem’ governor closes cherished sports center in majority-black Boston suburb for FOUR MONTHS so it can be used to house migrants
A deprived Boston community has been left ‘on fire’ after the governor of Massachusetts requisitioned a vital rec center to house the surge of migrants arriving in the city.
Democrat Maura Healey was accused of treating the Roxbury neighborhood ‘like garbage’ after she locked residents out of the Melnea A. Cass Recreational Complex with less than 48 hours notice.
She insisted it was needed to house the new arrivals, dozens of whom have been sleeping rough in the city’s airport for months.
But residents in the majority-black neighborhood demanded she explain why their cherished facilities had been chosen to take the hit.
‘You’re really putting us in a bad, bad situation,’ resident Rodney Singleton told her at a public meeting, ‘and it’s not fair.’
Migrants are expected to start moving in on Wednesday to the Roxbury site as it becomes the state’s fourth ‘safety-net site’ for those waiting for a place in Massachusetts’ emergency shelter system.

🚨 BREAKING 🚨
The White House is REFUSING to hand over early drafts of President Biden’s 2015 Ukraine speech where he called for the firing of the Ukrainian prosecutor, Viktor Shokin.
These drafts are important as it is believed, based on public reporting, that the then-VP “called an audible” and changed U.S. policy toward Ukraine to benefit his son on the plane ride to Ukraine.
Joe Biden later bragged about withholding a U.S. loan guarantee if Ukraine did not fire the prosecutor.
If the White House does not permit the production of these documents, our committee will consider the use of compulsory process.

“Biden Classifies Martha’s Vineyard And Other Wealthy Areas As “Low Income”

By Milt Harris ——Bio and Archives–February 1, 2024
EXCERPT: “Within his Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which is itself an oxymoron, there is an electric vehicle (EV) charger tax credit program. The idea was to subsidize EV charger stations in “low income” and “non-urban” areas of the country.
This was the Biden’s administration’s way of placating people, “on paper” at least, that can’t afford an EV in the first place. This administration is great at giving lip service and spending money on projects that have no chance of working, but of course always affords them the fall-back built-in excuse of “they were doing it for the environment.”
“This tax credit provides up to 30% off the cost of the charger to individuals and businesses in low-income communities and non-urban areas, making it more affordable to install EV charging infrastructure and increasing access to EV charging in underserved communities,” the White House stated on Jan. 19.
However, according to the Daily Caller News Foundation, their analysis of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) interactive eligibility map, that explanation doesn’t hold up. Areas such as Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in Massachusetts, Montauk and Fishers Island in New York, areas known as wealthy established locations, are classified as “low income” which means they are eligible for the subsidies.
In order to meet the definition of “low income” a Census tract must have a poverty rate of 20% or more. However, an area can qualify if the median family income is below 80% of the median family income in the wider metropolitan area or in its state if a given Census tract is not part of any particular metropolitan area, according to section 45D(e) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Large pockets of Cape Cod are also eligible for “low income” EV subsidies: In reality, the latter definition definitely skews the concept of “low income.” According to the DOE’s interactive map, over half of the landmass of Nantucket Island qualifies as low income, which one could argue is a deliberate loophole that allows the wealthy to benefit from the discounts.
The Vineyard Haven area of Martha’s Vineyard, which is another destination frequented by New England’s wealthiest citizens, is also unbelievably eligible as a “low-income” area. Many of the homes in the covered area are worth well over $1 million, with several properties valued between about $2 million and $5 million. Barack Obama owns a massive $11.7 million estate on the island, yet it is somehow a “low income area.”
Large pockets of Cape Cod are also eligible for “low income” EV subsidies. This includes Hyannis port, which everyone knows is the longtime home base of the Kennedy family, and Great Island, which features numerous multi-million-dollar homes.
The “old money” hub of Fischer Island, New York is classified as low income as well, which according to The Wall Street Journal is “an exclusive enclave where generations of iconic families gather to golf and sail.” Historically, such well known American families like the Roosevelts, Rockefellers and DuPonts have traveled to Fishers Island to vacation, according to the New York Post….”

“To The Outside World, Canada Now Irrelevant”

By Judi McLeod ——Bio and Archives–February 1, 2024
EXCERPT: “It’s no longer just a Canadian complaint. “Canada’s decline into irrelevance” is now recognized by the outside world. ‘Philip Cross: From swaggering to staggering: Canada’s decline into irrelevance’-headline, Financial Post, Jan 31, 2024. No one articulates Canada’s decline better than Cross, a senior fellow at the highly respected Macdonald-Laurier Institute.
“It is remarkable how much attitudes about Canada have shifted, both here and abroad, over the past 10 years. A decade ago, riding the wave of a booming economy, Canada was widely admired for a banking system that had got through the 2008-2009 global financial crisis without government bailouts. Today the country’s global stature is much diminished and Canadians are rapidly losing confidence in their economic prospects. (Financial Post, Jan 31, 2024)
“In the years leading up to 2016 Canadians grew accustomed to global accolades. In a 2003 cover story, The Economist touted the prospects for “cool Canada,” following up in 2006 that Canada’s relative economic performance made it a “superstar” as the “only country running both current-account and budget surpluses.” Steve Poloz, then chief economist at EDC, said in 2005 the stars were aligned for Canadian firms to achieve the “productivity miracle” already realized in the U.S.
In 2012, the OECD secretariat forecast Canada’s economic growth would lead the G7 nations over the next 50 years. Our AAA credit rating, stable economy and resource riches prompted the IMF in 2012 to recommend central banks hold more currency reserves in Canadian dollars, leading to headlines about “loonie set to join global currency elite” as a safe haven in turbulent times.”
But all of Canada’s star shine as a nation was back in the days when Stephen Harper was Canadian Prime Minister, where he led the Land of the Maple Leaf for almost ten years years, from February 2006, to November 2015. Canada started its deep downward trend with the 2015 election of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
“On the global stage, in 2016 U.S. President Barack Obama told Parliament: “the world needs more Canada.” (Financial Post)
It was a year before that when Obama sent top members of his campaign team to Ottawa to get Trudeau elected as Canada’s Prime Minister—a move generally ignored by the Canadian media….”

Let’s be very clear about the terminology that is consistently embedded in our vocabulary and thrown at us from every single angle.
Everyone keeps referring to the happenings in Texas as a civil war.
We are not headed towards a civil war! Or at the very least, we shouldn’t be headed towards a civil war. I have no interest in fighting my fellow countrymen! Civil war is fighting your fellow countrymen, not foreigners trying to invade.
We need to be very clear that the real term that needs to be used regularly and loudly is called a REVOLUTION!
They do not want the word REVOLUTION to make it into regular conversation. THAT IS BY DESIGN! Saying Civil war puts that idea in our head to fight each other rather than the REAL enemy: our BS government!
rev·o·lu·tion
noun
1.
a forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favor of a new system.

“Defense Secretary Austin apologizes for concealing cancer, says made a ‘mistake.’ Even though Austin was hospitalized Jan. 1, he did not inform Biden of his status until days later.”
By Madeleine Hubbard, JustTheNews
Published: February 1, 2024 11:09am
(Video)
ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Thursday, in his first public remarks following his cancer diagnosis and treatment, apologized for his lack of transparency and communication regarding the matter.
“I admit that was a mistake,” Austin said at Pentagon press conference about not informing President Biden about his hospitalization last month until days later. “I should have told the president about my cancer diagnosis,” he continued. “I should have also told my team and the American public, and I take full responsibility. I apologize to my teammates and to the American people.”
Austin also said he did not direct staff to conceal his hospitalization. Austin was diagnosed with prostrate cancer in early-December 2023 and underwent a related procedure Dec. 22. He was hospitalized Jan. 1 as a result of complications, and he did not inform Biden of his status for several days. He remained in the hospital for about two weeks following complications from prostate cancer surgery.
Austin on Thursday also said he has no intentions of resigning over the matter and that he has some problems with one of his legs as a result of the hospital procedures and as a result is using a golf cart to get around. He said he and his doctors expect the matter to improve.”

Slippery mud mixed with snow slush on top of some areas of snowpack! But I coasted and didn’t slip too much. I stocked up good on essentials this time, being careful to check exp dates. I think I’ve finally found a filter for my humidifier, altho I haven’t tried it yet.
Once again, I didn’t take my camera and I thought of it 10 miles down the road! But I didn’t see any particular noteworthy shots so didn’t think about it again. Until I was headed home…..that was ca-razy! Bright sunshine all the way to the west side of Pierce but, when I looked ahead about 3 miles, there was nothing but white! It would have made a spectacular picture: bright sunshine, clear skies above the fields and slightly ahead, then suddenly nothing but a band of white across the entire horizon ahead! As I got closer, the fog started drifting here and there until I was in the middle of a dense cloud so deep I couldn’t see 50 feet in front of me!
Thankfully, it didn’t stay that way but it is still quite foggy here now. Soooo much moisture, with the unseasonably warm temps – 44 on my thermometer even with the fog blocking the sun! Now to catch up…..

She and the “Die Hard” star share three adult children: Rumer, Scout and Tallulah. “What I’ll share is what I say to my children, which (is) it’s important to just meet them where they’re at and not hold onto what isn’t, but what is, because there’s great beauty and sweetness and loving and joy out of that,” she said.
Moore shared a similar message while speaking to Andy Cohen on Sirius XM when asked what she would say to those who are caring for a family member with dementia.
“When you let go of who they’ve been, or who you think they (are), or who even you would like them to be, you can then really stay in the present and take in the joy and the love that is present and there for all that they are, not all that they’re not,” she said.
Willis was married to Moore from 1987 to 2000. He is now married to Emma Heming, while Moore wed Ashton Kutcher in 2005 before they separated in 2011. Willis’ family announced in March 2022 that he would step away from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia, which they said was impacting his cognitive abilities. In February 2023, the family said his condition had “progressed” and that he received the more specific diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia.
“Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces,” the family’s statement said. “While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.” Frontotemporal dementia, or FTD, represents a group of brain disorders caused by the degeneration of the frontal and/or temporal lobes of the brain, according to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration.
In October, Willis’ friend Glenn Gordon Caron, the creator of “Moonlighting,” told The New York Post that the actor is “not totally verbal.” But while “language skills are no longer available to him,” Caron said that “when you’re with him you know that he’s Bruce.”
Willis’ wife, Emma Heming, has previously opened up about caring for the actor, posting on Instagram in 2023 that she has “times of sadness every day, grief every day.”

“Oregon GOP state senators who staged walkout over abortion can’t run for reelection, high court says”

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “The Oregon Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that 10 Republican state senators are ineligible to run for reelection after they participated in a quorum-denying walkout for six weeks last year to stall legislation on abortion, transgender treatments and firearms.
The high court decided in favor of Oregon Secretary of State LaVonne Griffin-Valade, who had disqualified the senators from running for office again after voters approved a measure in 2022 to amend the state constitution to ban lawmakers with more than 10 unexcused absences from running again.
The measure to prevent walkouts passed after GOP lawmakers staged other walkouts from the Legislature in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Five of the 10 Republican state senators, Tim Knopp, Daniel Bonham, Suzanne Weber, Dennis Linthicum and Lynn Findle, had filed a lawsuit against the secretary of state over the decision.
The walkout, which was the longest in Oregon’s history, resulted in hundreds of bills being stalled, according to The Associated Press.”

“In a Zoom call about a mental health proposition, Gov. Gavin Newsom says he was at a Target and saw someone walk out without paying. Yep! Theft is so common in California that it happened right in front of Gavin Newsom! Then he asked a worker why the person steals and they blamed the Governor before looking at him twice and recognizing him.
And when the cashier said they can’t stop shoplifters due to the California government, Newsom got mad at her and asked to see the manager. “I was like, why I am spending $380 and everyone can walk the hell right out.”
