The official state flower of Alaska is the wild native alpine forget-me-not. It was adopted in 1917 and belongs to the species Myosotis alpestris that is part of a few plant families with true blue flowers. The flower grows throughout the state of Alaska, especially in rocky regions of the mountains. It is unclear why the pioneers of the state chose the forget-me-not as the state flower, but given its distribution in the state, it was a natural fit. The poem “Forget me not” by Esther Birdsall Darling states that the flower is one thing that is cherished in the state, and by choosing it, the people of Alaska are ensuring that the state is forever remembered.

Characteristics Of the Flower

The forget-me-not is quickly identified because of its sky blue color, and the five blue petals appear vividly against the green grass. The stem is between 6 to 12 inches long and contains several flowers. The flower is about half an inch wide with a yellow center. Fine hair-like fibers cover both the flower and the stem.

Symbolic Meaning of The Forget-me-Not

The forget-me-not flower is a plant that is spoken of in Alaska when people are talking about faithfulness. In the past, women would wear the flowers as a sign of devotion to their lovers and that they are always thinking of their husbands when they are not around. Others use the flower as a symbol of remembrance of a loved one in the event of death although this tradition has faded over time. The abundance of the forget-me-not in Alaska is an experience that one will not easily forget and therefore represents the wild nature and beauty of the state. A legend in Germany states that a lord and his lady were walking along a river bank. The lord was about to give the flowers to the lady when he fell into the river, he tossed the flowers to his lady and shouted “Forget me not!” in German. He was dragged by the river never to be seen again, and the flowers were the only thing that reminded the woman of the lord.

Care And Cultivation

The alpine forget-me-not grows in wet areas because they thrive in damp soil. They are found in rocky environments, wooded areas and under bushes. They reach maturity in late spring and early summer, but bloom from spring to fall.

  1. what a morning so far…
    cleaned out the wood stove, brought up firewood, stripped the bed and started laundry, and looked out the kitchen window and saw we have a tree drown. it was a smaller dead one that had been dropping its branches for the last few months. but it looks like it was chopped down…not uprooted. that must be how dead the thing was. luckily it’s not in the way and it didn’t hit anything. o said the snow was wet and heavy!

      However, on January 18, 2024, the Terrorist Screening Center “made a redetermination” that the individual was “a confirmed member of al-Shabaab” and was involved in the use, manufacture or transport of explosives or firearms, the memo states. Two days later, ICE nabbed the al-Shabaab member in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

    ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Video captured the shocking moment that an Arizona man – who allegedly has a “history of violence” – appeared to try to kidnap a 5th-grade girl in broad daylight as she was walking to school.

    On Friday morning, a 5th-grade student was walking to Sunset Elementary School in Glendale, Arizona. A local resident’s security camera caught a silver sedan making a quick turn in the middle of the road and pulled over near where the girl was walking on the sidewalk. The video shows the driver park, exit the vehicle, and chase after the young girl.

    Thankfully, the 5th-grader was able to outrun the suspected kidnapper. The man calmly walked back to his vehicle. After the girl was able to escape the suspected kidnapping, three fellow students huddled around her to provide comfort, according to neighbors. “They hid her because the man was chasing her,” Amcy Borquez told Arizona’s Family. “I think they were very brave for their age,” Borquez added. “I’m telling them all day, like you’re heroes.”

    After reviewing the security camera video, police arrested 37-year-old Joseph Ruiz hours after the alleged kidnapping. Ruiz was charged with kidnapping and custodial interference felony charges. Ruiz reportedly has a “history of violence,” according to authorities. “I would note that he has a history of violence. He was convicted of an aggravated assault, a class 3 dangerous felony, after having stabbed his mother in the neck,” said the state’s attorney in Ruiz’s court appearance.

    Nayelia Martinez – a neighbor living near the alleged abduction who has a son attending the same school as the victim – exclaimed, “Oh my god. It gave me goosebumps.” Sunset Elementary School sent a letter to parents discussing the alleged kidnapping, and said the victim noticed the suspect follow her from the time she left her apartment.

    Data from 2019 shows that Arizona has the second-most missing people per 100,000 citizens, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System – a national centralized repository and resource center for missing, unidentified, and unclaimed person cases across the United States. Only Alaska had a higher rate of missing people.”

  20. oh my…just finished the first round of shoveling…it is heavy and solid! the temps hovered around 32* enough to slightly melt everything into an ice berg! had to chop at it to get it off. there’s a ton on the roof yet…that will probably be worse!

    Forget Me Nots are a favorite flower – though I’ve never seen one in person! Not sure they will grow in Zone 8.5 to 9 – the Tropic of Heat and Humidity where we live.

    Sky blue flowers are very rare, but so beautiful!

  22. Up to 45 here now; I had to go thru my garage to get to the back to put the feeders out. No WP feeder yet – I had to chisel ice from in front of the patio door to get it open just enough that I could slide thru; there is definitely no room to use the step stool. After all the days of warmth and direct sunlight, there is a crust on the snow drifts, and I am light enough that I was able to walk on top to hang up the feeder over the garden bed. I’m guessing it won’t take long for the birds to return. I could tell that it is very wet snow underneath in the areas where I did break thru. I wish the plow would come by just once while it is all slushy and get it off so it doesn’t freeze again overnight. I could get out in my truck then.

I hope it works, so there will be no need for new elections,” Wilders wrote on his social media page. Wilders has long been warning about the Great Replacement, which describes the shrinking population of Europeans in relation to newcomers from other parts of the world, including Africa and Asia.

    Another video is also spreading like wildfire on the internet of an earlier interview where he talked about the Dutch waking up. He said that people who reject migration are often accused of being racist, when it is Europeans who are at a disadvantage compared to migrants.

    “Are they calling us racists? In the Netherlands and other European countries, people born here are discriminated against because they give houses to migrants just because. Who is racist? We are very angry,” Geert Wilders said in the interview.”

After serving his sentence, Littlejohn, 38, will have 3 years of supervised release. He will also have to pay a $5,000 fine, according to CBS News.

    Littlejohn was charged in September and pleaded guilty the following month to one charge of unauthorized disclosure of tax returns and information about the returns. He received the maximum sentence of 5 years on Monday.

    “He targeted the sitting president of the United States of America, and that is exceptional by any measure,” federal Judge Ana Reyes said at his sentencing. “It cannot be open season on our elected officials.”

    In a brief statement before the court, Littlejohn said, “I alone am responsible for this crime” and that he leaked the records out of a desire for transparency. “I made my decision with full knowledge that I would likely end up in a courtroom to answer for my serious crime,” he also said. “I used my skills to systematically violate the privacy of thousands of people.”

Nathy Odinson, 33, gained access to the roof of a 29-floor apartment block in Pattaya and leapt off as a friend videoed him. But seconds later he slammed into a tree and then the ground after his parachute failed to open.

    Nathy’s brother Ed Harrison, 39, said the chilling footage showed how the mini pilot chute was caught in the harness – meaning there was “no chance” it would have deployed. Ed told The Sun that his daredevil brother died due to simple “user error. Looking at that video, any skydiver would immediately tell you what is wrong,” he said. “As he is standing he is holding a white mini parachute called a pilot chute that has a cord going to the main chute which is the bridle.

    “You throw the pilot chute into the relative wind flow and that deploys the main chute in his bag on the back. What you can clearly see is that the bridle is routed through his harness so there is no chance it could have opened the main chute. It was a simple mistake he had made without realizing. He looks hurried which is a bad thing, perhaps worried someone might have stopped the jump.”

    He added: “It’s a really simple thing and you can see he has tried to rectify the bridle but he hasn’t looked and no-one else has done a check for him. Base jumping is dangerous because you don’t have a second chance. The equipment was checked after he died by a professional rigger and it was in good working condition. There was no problem with his kit.”

    Ed, from St Neots, Cambridgeshire, paid tribute to his brother, saying he was a “hero” to his three children. “He will be missed by so many people,” Ed said. “He had done more than 5,000 jumps and had jumped all over the world. He had jumped in America, Spain, New Zealand, Thailand and the Philippines and had made friends in all of those places. He was fun-loving and joyful and was great with kids. He was a hero to my three children. They spoke to him frequently as I video called him every other day. They still can’t believe this is real.”

    Nathy was using the same chute as Rowan Atkinson’s character in Johnny English Reborn. It still had the word “Spying” on it after it was used in the 2011 James Bond parody starring Atkinson as an MI7 agent. Nathy, who worked for a skydiving firm run by his father in Thailand, had been given it around a year ago by another skydiver who had been employed as a consultant on the movie.

    Ed added: “He had been taking the letters off but hadn’t got round to taking them all off and is still said ‘Spying’ on it. Someone who had consulted on that movie had the chute and was on a trip that Nathy was on and he gave it to him. That’s how he got it.”

    Nathy worked as a skydiver taking punters on tandem jumps as well as an aerial videographer. He had also worked at Skydive Hibaldstow, in Lincolnshire, and was a base jumping enthusiast, even though it is illegal. He had planned to jump from the roof of the Lumpini Ville Naklua condo in the coastal resort of Pattaya on Friday but called it off because of the weather.

    A photo taken that day showed him on the roof with his chute packed in a black sack on his back. He returned a day later wearing the same clothes and with his chute on his back again. A video taken by a friend showed his last moments as he checked his equipment and that the camera strapped to his helmet was working. He then stepped to the edge of the building and said: “Three, two, one, see ya” before jumping off.

    Police and paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 7.30pm local time but Nathy could not be saved. Police Lieutenant Kamolporn Nadee said: “The parachute that the deceased used to jump malfunctioned. “The friend who recorded the video of him jumping was questioned and the video was examined as evidence. Forensics officers are investigating the case further. They are examining the parachute.”

    The Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Thailand.”

  46. Cool! Watching an episode of Mysteries at the Museum…in1851, on a transatlantic cruise from Europe to the US, a number of children got sick and died. A passenger, named Gail Borden, a 50 year old school teacher was determined to figure out why and discovered that the main thing they had in common was they all drank fresh milk from the cows on-board, which was routine back then. He discovered the cows were sick as well, and passing it on in their milk. He was determined to find a way to send milk on trips such as this w/o refrigeration. He came up with condensed milk = Borden’s Condensed Milk!
