Want to see a hundred bald eagles in a single glance? Spy a couple dozen roosting in a lone tree? Listen to the hair-raising chorus of their weird, trilling calls? Visit the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve—site of the largest gathering of bald eagles in the world. Each October and November, between 3,000 and 4,000 bald eagles descend upon this 48,000-acre preserve centered on river bottomlands a few miles north of Haines to feast on late runs of salmon.

When these eagles converge, photographers travel from all over the world to capture images of the iconic birds jousting over chum and coho spawners. They perch in trees, land on gravel bars, and wing across a stunning Southeast Alaska vista. Even without the birds, the preserve anchors a pristine riverine wilderness traversed by a paved road minutes from a friendly small town with full services. The Chilkat River Valley forms a natural travel corridor between the interior and the coast, attracting moose, beavers, coyotes, wolves, brown and black bears, mountain goats on the ridges, forest birds, plus long distant migrants like trumpeter swans and Arctic terns.

Where Will You Find the Most Bald Eagles?

A vast sand-and-gravel “flat” where the Tsirku and Kleheni rivers merge with the Chilkat serves as the main viewing area, located along the Haines Highway between Mile 18 and 24. With thousands of fish finning and dying among a myriad of shallow channels that remain open well into winter, the zone draws thousands of eagles seeking a late-season snack. It is considered critical habitat for the species in the region, and the preserve was formed in 1982 with a mission to help protect this space. Eagles can be found throughout the preserve, however, with an estimated 300 to 400 of the birds in the area throughout the year.

Tips For Visiting the Park:

Best viewing will be from four main pullouts between Mile 18 and Mile 24, but eagles might be anywhere along the river.

The Council Grounds pullout at Mile 19 features pit toilets, informational displays, a boardwalk, viewing scopes and a two-mile river-side trail. Go there first.

Please pull completely off the road to view or photograph bald eagles! Keep watch for other eagle enthusiasts so awestruck that they simply brake in middle of the highway and leap out with doors ajar. (Yes, this actually happens—a headache for park rangers.)

Stay within the designated areas to avoid stressing individual birds. They need space to roost and feed.

Much of the preserve is not easily accessible, but during summer, rafting and jet boat tours are a great way reach remote spots along the river.

    Trump lawyer Alina Habba said she was unaware Manhattan federal Judge Lewis Kaplan and Carroll’s lawyer Roberta Kaplan worked together in the early 1990s at the same powerhouse white-shoe law firm until Saturday, when asked about it by Post columnist Charles Gasparino, who was told by a source that the judge was once Roberta Kaplan’s “mentor.

    “It was never disclosed. It’s insane and so incestuous,” Habba said, insisting neither the 79-year-old judge nor Roberta Kaplan, 57, who aren’t related, disclosed the “conflict of interest” and a violation of judicial ethics rules.

    Roberta Kaplan worked at Paul, Weiss Rifkin, Wharton & Garrison in Midtown from 1992 to 2016, before leaving to become a founding partner of Kaplan Hecker & Fink, according to her LinkedIn page.

    “This is news to us,” she continued. “We are going to include this in our appeal and take appropriate measures. The fact it wasn’t disclosed is an ethics violation.”

    During her early years at Paul Weiss, she worked as associate of the firm at the same time as Judge Kaplan, who was a partner there until 1994 when he was appointed to the federal bench by then-President Bill Clinton.

    Zak Sawyer, a rep for Roberta Kaplan, insisted no conflict exists.

    “They overlapped for less than two years in the early 1990s at a large law firm when he was a senior partner and she was a junior associate and she never worked for him,” said Sawyer, who declined to provide further comment.

    But a former Paul Weiss partner who asked not to be named said like all associates at the firm, Roberta Kaplan did her best to distinguish herself before partners, including Lewis Kaplan.

    “Lew was like her mentor,” claimed the former partner.

    Messages left with Judge Kaplan’s chambers and a rep for Paul Weiss were not returned Saturday.

    1. Yes, it should have been disclosed but then again….why did Trump’s legal team NOT already know this?!?! Seems to me SOMEONE didn’t conduct their due diligence! I also seem to recall other articles bringing up the fact that the judge was a “mentor” to one of the attorneys involved so….????? You pay a law firm millions and millions of $’s and you expect them to know their shit!!!

        b) ethics REQUIRES the party with the conflict to disclose it. not doing so, means they tried to hide it–which makes it unethical and possibly illegal.

        it seems ALL the prosecutions against the President have ethical issues.

        what if it was a ploy–to wait and see how nuts the jury was gonna be first? since it’s so far gone, and the judge never revealed this–he could be disqualified or whatever they do to judges—and the verdict is tossed. a new trial? one without all the restrictions placed on his freedom of speech?

    ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Things are looking pretty solid for Republicans in a presidential election year. The current administration is a disaster with only the most loyal Democrat sheep staying with the herd. The GOP has its presumed nominee despite protestation from Camp Nikki. Public sentiment continues to lean right with traditionally secure Democrat voter groups peeling away.

    Unfortunately, it’s all one big trap. Much of the effort to raise dissatisfaction with the Biden-Harris regime is going to be wasted if Democrats perform the maneuver that a growing number of analysts are starting to predict. If/when Joe Biden declares that he’s not running for reelection, he will become the ultimate political scapegoat for all of the bad things happening in America today. And if/when Michelle Obama or someone else is airdropped into the nomination, the campaign clock will be reset.

    Corporate media is foaming at the mouth to see it happen, but they’re holding their calls for Biden to step down so he can absorb as much voter dissatisfaction as possible. The shorter the Obama campaign is, the better because she simply doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. The DNC and their puppet masters want Biden to be as disastrous as possible so his replacement can rebound and peak just before the election.

    It’s like political Aikido. They want Republicans to launch their full attacks on Biden only to have them deflected by Obama. Is the border crisis Biden’s fault? Yes it is, they’ll say. And they’ll come back with how Obama’s border policy will fix it, thus neutering the GOP’s argument in the eyes of low-information voters.

    Is the economy tanking? Rather than trying to defend the indefensible, Democrats will simply say that BIDEN’s economy is failing but OBAMA’s economy won’t. And don’t get me started on abortion, which may be the biggest tell about their plans. If they wanted Biden to win another term, they would have him focus hardcore on fixing the border before the summer so he could turn a big loser into a winner. Instead, they’re focusing on abortion which would only be a smart move if they intend on running a woman like Michelle Obama.

    She’s almost certainly running, or at least considering it. Or, to be more accurate, the powers-that-be are considering running her. The only reason they would look to someone else like Gavin Newsom is if they intend to bring in some wacky running mate like Oprah Winfrey. It wouldn’t shock me if they reversed it to an Oprah-Newsom ticket. Regardless of who they’re planning on running, it’s best to act as if it’s not going to be Joe Biden or Kamala Harris. And if for some reason the Biden-Harris ticket is kept, then the strategy shift I’m recommending still won’t harm Republican chances.

    Time to Ignore the Placeholder — If Republicans want to mitigate the damage that will happen if/when Biden is replaced, they need to stop talking about him specifically. Any attack against Biden’s border policy today will be negated by his replacement. Any condemnation of the economy today will be blamed on Bidenomics by a future candidate.

    Republicans need to start talking in terms of Democrats as a whole. They must stop blaming Biden for the border and make their message encompassing so it’s the Democrats’ border policy. This is challenging because Republican strategists and commentators have been trained to attack individuals. The GOP will need to engage in the Democrat playbook of attacking the group. Just as they call us “MAGA Republicans,” we need to start addressing them as “Open Borders Democrats.” That’s the message that needs to stick.

    Once Biden is replaced, the GOP can go back to what they know best and focus their attacks on the candidate, but in the meantime all attacks specifically against Biden and Kamala Harris will be wasted. We cannot disregard the stupidity of most voters and the ease in which corporate media will be able to sell them on Michelle Obama being different from Joe Biden. Unfortunately, voters won’t realize how much worse she is than Biden until she’s already destroying the nation.”
