African Violets

African violets are one of the world’s most popular houseplants and for good reason. These compact, low-growing plants flower several times a year, and they are available in a multitude of leaf forms and colors. African violets are distinguished by a rosette of thick, fuzzy leaves and violet-like flowers that bloom just above the evergreen foliage.

Don’t be put off by their reputation for difficulty: providing you follow a few simple rules, African violets should thrive indoors. With a little experience, it’s possible to keep these slow-growing plants in flower nearly all year round and grow them to the size of dinner plates.

African Violet Care

African violets will thrive in bright, warm and humid conditions. Keep water from touching their leaves or it will leave brown spots. Remove dead flowers and leaves as soon as you see them to encourage a healthier plant. Regularly check the soil for excess moisture. This will encourage rot. Growing these houseplants is really a matter of balance; you have to make sure that the different factors that go into their cultivation all are weighted against each other. They should be kept in moist enough conditions that they don’t dry out, yet still exposed to a fresh breeze to avoid letting them get too stuffy, and exposed to sunlight without damaging their leaf tips. Don’t be discouraged if your African violets suffer some damage—it’s all part of the process.

Light

African violets do well in bright but not direct sunlight. They are commonly grown under fluorescent lights placed 12 to 15 inches above the leaves. If the leaves start getting light green, your plant is getting too much light, while thin and dark green leaves or a leggy plant indicate too little light.

Soil

A well-drained potting mix is essential for African violets. Poor drainage can cause root rot, in which the plant becomes waterlogged and its leaves begin to fall, so make sure that the plant is never allowed to be exposed to standing water for an extended period of time.

Water

Keep soil moist with warm water and strive for high humidity. Do not allow water to contact the leaves of the plant to prevent damage, other than light misting. Water from below, or push the water spout into the soil when watering. Don’t allow the plant to sit in water.

Temperature and Humidity

African violets like warm and humid conditions and thrive at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not allow the temperature to fall below about 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Do your best to keep the plants away from any drafts in the home.

Fertilizer

Feed with an African violet fertilizer every other week during the spring and summer. For the amount to use, follow product label instructions.

Types of African Violets

The original plants, the S. ionantha, were introduced in Germany in 1893. Shortly after, the S. confusa were introduced when a grower at the nursery noticed subtle differences among some of the plants. Since then, thousands of varieties have been produced. Today, African violets are available in single and double flowers, frilled and different shaped flowers. Their flowers come in all different colors, and the plants have widely varied leaf shapes. They come in both single crown and also multi-crown, trailing plants. These are just a few examples.

‘Persian Prince’ is a miniature-sized plant with scalloped medium green leaves and semidouble dark purple flowers.

‘Lyon’s Lavender Magic’ is standard size with medium green foliage, and white with light purple colored star-shaped flowers that can be single or semi-double and frilled.

‘Hawaiian Pearl’ is a standard size plant with dark green foliage and has a semi-double star shape flower that is ivory with a dark lavender/rose band.

‘Summer Twilight’ has variegated leaves with frilled lilac-purple flowers that have a white edged border.

‘Lonestar Snowstorm’ has variegated leaves with single white frilled flowers.

‘Little Maya’ has dark green foliage with deep crimson red flowers.

  2. Good Morning, Miss Pat!

African Violets are beautiful! I tried growing them – and even got a multi-layered grow cart. However, I was not precise or disciplined enough to do it. My violets didn’t thrive, but got root rot, and other diseases. I went with a friend to an African Violet show in a city near us, and it was a hoot – they displayed the winners as a Queen, Princesses, and their Court, on stands with little Crowns and Tiaras over them. The ladies who grew and exhibited entries in the show were all plump and blue haired, dressed in their own finery, but were angry and bitterly complaining about the judging of the winners. That kind of thing didn’t appeal to me at all. I sold my grow cart and gave away my surviving plants the next week.

I love wild and domestic violets (violas) that grow outdoors – violets, pansies, all colors and varieties! They don’t get diseases as easily and like to be left alone. Whenever I move to a new place, I love to hunt and learn where their wild violets grow in the early spring. To me, they are tiny treasures. I have loved violets since I was a little girl. In the first grade, instead of getting on the school bus, I wandered toward home along the roadside near the school, picking violets, which alarmed my mother and grandmother, who came looking for me.

    1. Morning GA!
at our old house, my windowsills were lined with African violets–in a variety of colors! But i didn’t bring them with me because we moved into an apartment while the house was being built and the lighting was limited.
I tried to find a greenhouse up here that had them but couldn’t any.
then last fall we went to Lowe’s and they had a tiny stand of the, I bought one and it’s been on my kitchen windowsill ever since. it blooms like crazy, then dies back a little, but comes back strong again.
first rule of african violets in my book? never get the leaves wet!

  5. they used a juvenile knowing he would get light punishment, no bail etc…he drove the car into the bakery so his friends could loot it. then he gets arrested and released–and within hours commits more crimes. he is NOT a juvenile that needs sheltering. stick his butt in jail.
    FTA

A 13-year-old boy is accused of being behind the wheel of the car that plowed through the front doors of a small bakery in California earlier this month, allowing at least 100 people to ransack the shop during an illegal street takeover.

The 13-year-old boy, whose name wasn’t released because of his age, was one of five people arrested in connection to the looting at Reuben’s Bakery & Mexican Food on Jan. 2, according to KTLA.

Through a search warrant, detectives arrested the juvenile on Jan.12 in Los Angeles.

The teen was charged with burglary, felony vandalism, driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent, and inciting a riot, according to Luna.

He was cited and released to his family with a pending court date.

Hours after being released, the 13-year-old was a part of a string of other burglaries throughout the county with one back in Compton, and another in the city of Carson.

The teen was among a group of four that attempted to rob a 7-Eleven when a Sheriff’s deputy unknowingly walked into the convenience store in the middle of the armed robbery.

The juvenile was arrested and is being held at Juvenile Hall, Luna announced.

The sheriff’s department served three more search warrants Tuesday morning, which resulted in the arrests of four people who have been charged with burglary and possession of stolen property, stemming from the bakery theft.

“Will the resistance in Texas prevail? 25 states and a significant majority of the American people support the Texas Guard’s efforts to secure the border.”
    JORDAN SCHACHTEL
    JAN 25, 2024

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “On Thursday, some 25 Republican Governors issued and signed a joint statement supporting the right of Texas to defend the southern border from illegal alien intrusions. Former President Trump also weighed in, encouraging other red states to assist in the effort to prevent illegals from breaching the border and entering the United States

It’s fair to say that Texas has a significant majority of the American people on its side, given the harm the illegal alien epidemic has imposed upon Americans. But sadly, having the support of the people is not enough today to fend off the Biden Administration’s attempts to keep the floodgates open at the border.

Right now, there is currently an ongoing Mexican standoff between the Biden Administration and Texas. Neither party has changed the current status quo. The Biden White House isn’t backing down. They’ve given Texas a 24 hour deadline to allow Border Patrol access to the area, likely so that they can cut the razor wire that makes it more difficult for the illegals to enter the country.

It’s not quite clear how this will turn out. Governor Abbott, for his part, remains in India on a trade mission, which isn’t exactly ideal for a political situation this tenuous. It’s worth considering the following dynamics when trying to forecast how this thing pans out.

    Texas strengths:

    — The American people want a strong border
    — Has the support of 25 state governors and counting
    — The Texas Guard being in place is the status quo
    — The illegal alien issue has impacted virtually every American citizen

    Texas weakness:

    — Beholden to the whims of a maniacal, unpredictably destructive federal government
    — Has very limited financial and political autonomy
    — Supreme Court decision was a massive blow to Texas
    — Biden can federalize the guard
    — Abbott historically has folded like a lawn chair on major political issues

    Biden admin strengths:

    — Supreme Court leverage
    — The very real threat to federalize the Texas National Guard
    — A superior escalatory threat
    — Though they represent a minority viewpoint, the ruling class on Wall St and in Washington, D.C. want an open border

    Biden admin weakness:

    — Deliberately opening up the border is terrible optics
    — It’s election season and they are already in a weak position
    — If Texas doesn’t back down, the White House will have to be the “bad guy”
    — The mask will come fully off related to the somewhat clandestine long term policy to import more Democrat voters

There’s also the strong possibility that Texas and the Biden Admin decide to give the other party the optics that they want, and allow for the Texas Guard to remain in place. What are your thoughts? Will the resistance in Texas prevail?”

  7. “FBI luminaries starkly warn Congress that U.S. being invaded at border: ‘Alarming and perilous’”
    By John Solomon
    Published: January 25, 2024 8:44pm
    Updated: January 25, 2024 11:41pm
    (Video)
EXCERPT: “With a constitutional crisis brewing in Texas and voters nationwide alarmed by the toll of illegal immigration, some of the FBI’s most famous retired executives are issuing a stark warning to Congress that President Joe Biden’s border policies have unleashed an “invasion” of military-aged male foreigners who pose “one of the most pernicious ever” threats to American security.

Ten former FBI executives – some who oversaw the bureau’s intelligence, counterterrorism, criminal and training operations – expressed their alarm in a letter dated Jan. 17 to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Leader Chuck Schumer and the chairmen of the House and Senate committees that preside over the U.S. intelligence and Homeland Security apparatus.

Their language affirms that of both current FBI Director Christopher Wray, who testified the nation’s security lights are “blinking red,” and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who alleges Biden’s loosening of border security has allowed an “invasion” of America by foreigners with troubling origins and attributes.

“In its modern history the U.S. has never suffered an invasion of the homeland and, yet, one is unfolding now,” the FBI luminaries wrote. “Military aged men from across the globe, many from countries or regions not friendly to the United States, are landing in waves on our soil by the thousands – not by splashing ashore from a ship or parachuting from a plane but rather by foot across a border that has been accurately advertised around the world as largely unprotected with ready access granted.

“It would be difficult to overstate the danger represented by the presence inside our borders of what is comparatively a multi-division army of young single adult males from hostile nations and regions whose background, intent, or allegiance is completely unknown,” they added.

You can read the full letter here:

House Speaker Mike Johnson received the letter this week and told Just the News on Thursday it adds to House Republicans’ determination to hold out for a deal that completely closes the border. “This letter from national security leaders is further confirmation of what we already know: President Biden’s open border policies are increasing the risks of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil,” Johnson said. “An unprecedented threat at this scale requires transformational policy changes immediately to secure the border and end the administration’s mass release of illegals into our country.”

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., a top Republican on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said the letter captured the reality of the threat from some of the nation’s most experienced law enforcement veterans of protecting the homeland. “This sobering letter from former FBI, Homeland Security, and other law enforcement officials describes the chilling reality of why @POTUS’s open border is a clear and present danger to America,” Sen. Johnson wrote on X…..”

  9. “City of Seattle Hands $10 MILLION to ANTIFA, BLM Rioters.”
    Friday, January 26, 2024
    NationalPulse

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “The city of Seattle announced on Wednesday a $10 million settlement with a group of 50 BLM and Antifa rioters.

The rioters sued the city and the Seattle Police Department (SPD) for injuries they claimed were a result of police actions during the 2020 riots following the death of career criminal George Floyd during an arrest in Minneapolis. The personal injury law firm Stritmatter Kessler Koehler Moore represented the claimants.

“Among the 50 Peaceful Protesters represented by Stritmatter Kessler Koehler Moore was Aubreanna Inda, who was standing still peacefully when a blast ball was launched directly at her chest, striking her and causing her to go into cardiac arrest,” the law firm said in a statement celebrating the settlement.

However, Stritmatter Kessler Koehler Moore’s description of Ms. Inda contradicts the available facts.

According to AntifaWatch, an online database that tracks Antifa extremists and other left-wing domestic terrorists, Ms. Inda “placed herself as a meat shield between other rioters and police.” Ms. Inda was then “hit in the chest by non-lethal ammo when police were forced to use crowd control measures because rioters were throwing rocks and shining lasers in cop[s’] eyes.” Ms. Inda also claims she “participated in every Seattle riot up to the point she was shot.” She was arrested “in 2020 for unlawful weapon, obstructing an officer and failure to disperse.”

The lead plaintiff’s attorney, Karen Koehler, said the protesters “were engaged in a First Amendment speech and activity against the very police brutality which they were met with.”

The facts do not support this description, however. In addition to assaults on police officers, rioters in Seattle caused millions of dollars in property damage when they took over portions of the Capitol Hill neighborhood, declaring it the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ).”

  11. IMPACT: The China Audit – Now Mandated Through The National Defense Authorization Act: U.S. Senator Joni Ernst drafted and championed the China Audit, quantifying taxpayer dollars into China and virology labs. Now, it’s the law of the land.
    ADAM ANDRZEJEWSKI
    JAN 26, 2024

EXCERPT: “In April 2023, my organization at OpenTheBooks.com partnered with U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) to quantify $1.3 billion in taxpayer funds flowing into the adversarial nations of Russia and China. Now, the research has informed a new law. Senator Ernst inserted language into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which was signed by President Joe Biden on December 22, 2023.

The new law mandates an audit of China, its virology labs, and other dangerous labs from around the world. The study and report to Congress must be completed within 180 days. The law now directs the Pentagon to go back ten years and count all taxpayer money that flowed into the People’s Republic of China, the Communist Party of China (CCP), EcoHealth Alliance, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, any labs similar to Wuhan that are run by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and any other entities owned or controlled – officially or unofficially – by these groups.

Then, the law goes a step further. The NDAA directs the Pentagon to quantify the dollars spent doing research on other dangerous viruses that have pandemic potential – not only in China, but also around the world. The result should be a list of viruses – think Ebola, Nipah, or influenza – and the countries we’re paying for dangerous research.

Following the endless controversy over the origins of the Covid pandemic, the new law is a dramatic victory. While Dr. Anthony Fauci and other public health officials hemmed and hawed about the extent of their knowledge of such research, and played coy about how it’s defined, Americans were left in the dark.

How much of this research is going on, who are we paying, and where is it happening? This law offers the chance for real answers. Transparency. A rare, concrete step toward understanding what may have happened with Covid, what the risks are going forward, and what we need to know about the costs and benefits of dangerous research.

Background: It’s amazing how fast federal agencies lose track of taxpayer money….”

“We will make the unredacted transcripts available to you for review in camera, provided that you agree in writing to abide by the commitments made on a bipartisan basis by the Select Committee — to maintain the anonymity of the four witnesses consistent with the conditions under which the witnesses agreed to appear before the Select Committee, and to prevent the disclosure of ‘operational details and private information,’” Sauber wrote in a two-page letter to Loudermilk, which was obtained by POLITICO.

The Georgia Republican has pushed for the administration to hand over the records for months, which he has characterized as interviews with White House employees that were in or around the Oval Office during the attack. The Jan. 6 select committee publicly released the vast majority of its evidence, but withheld a handful of transcripts of White House aides and Secret Service officials. Those were sent to the White House and Department of Homeland Security for further review and redaction under the terms of an agreement struck in order to interview witnesses in the first place.

The committee has access to the redacted White House transcripts, but Republicans have complained that key portions were blacked out, and have openly speculated that the transcripts include information that would undermine some of the Jan. 6 committee’s findings. House Republicans have repeatedly flirted with efforts to discredit the panel’s previous work and downplay the Capitol attack.

If Loudermilk accepts the offer, it will give House Republicans access to a tranche of unredacted testimony that has so far been unavailable to them and to the public. Sauber described the witnesses as individuals who “worked at the White House on January 6, 2021, during the Trump Administration, serving in non-partisan roles, including in positions with national security responsibilities.”

A spokesperson for Loudermilk didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the White House’s letter. In a brief interview last week, he said his “speculation” about those interviews is they “didn’t go the way [Democrats] were hoping.”

The interviews were referenced in the select committee’s final report, using descriptors like “a White House employee with national security responsibilities” or simply a “White House employee.” One witness corroborated others who described Trump’s “heated” reaction to then-Vice President Mike Pence during their final conversation on Jan. 6. Another said they overheard top Trump lawyers lamenting that the then-president didn’t want to help stop the violence unfolding at the Capitol.

Loudermilk sent a letter to the White House last week reiterating his request that the administration hand over unredacted copies of the transcripts to the committee. If the White House didn’t hand over the records, Loudermilk warned that the committee would “have no other choice” than to subpoena the documents. In the recent interview, Loudermilk also threatened to subpoena previous Jan. 6 committee witnesses.

  13. “CAMPAIGN ‘24 – Is the Electoral Fix Already In? — The 2024 presidential race increasingly looks like it will be decided by lawyers, not voters, as Democrats unveil plans for America’s first lawfare election”
    MATT TAIBBI
    JAN 26, 2024

EXCERPT: “The fix is in. To “protect democracy,” democracy is already being canceled. We just haven’t admitted the implications of this to ourselves yet.

On Sunday, January 14th, NBC News ran an eye-catching story: “Fears grow that Trump will use the military in ‘dictatorial ways’ if he returns to the White House.” It described “a loose-knit network of public interest groups and lawmakers” that is “quietly” making plans to “foil any efforts to expand presidential power” on the part of Donald Trump.

The piece quoted an array of former high-ranking officials, all insisting Trump will misuse the Department of Defense to execute civilian political aims. Since Joe Biden’s team “leaked” a strategy memo in late December listing “Trump is an existential threat to democracy” as Campaign 2024’s central talking point, surrogates have worked overtime to insert existential or democracy in quotes. This was no different:

“We’re about 30 seconds away from the Armageddon clock when it comes to democracy,” said Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Defense, William Cohen, adding that Trump is “a clear and present danger to our democracy.” Skye Perryman of Democracy Forward, one of the advocacy groups organizing the “loose” coalition, said, “We believe this is an existential moment for American democracy.” Declared former CIA and defense chief Leon Panetta: “Like any good dictator, he’s going to try to use the military to basically perform his will.”

Former Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security at the U.S. Department of Justice and current visiting Georgetown law professor Mary McCord was one of the few coalition participants quoted by name. She said: “We’re already starting to put together a team to think through the most damaging types of things that he [Trump] might do so that we’re ready to bring lawsuits if we have to.”

The group was formed by at least two organizations that have been hyperactive in filing lawsuits against Trump and Trump-related figures over the years: the aforementioned Democracy Forward, chaired by former Perkins Coie and Hillary Clinton campaign attorney Marc Elias, and Protect Democracy, a ubiquitous non-profit run by a phalanx of former Obama administration lawyers like Ian Bassin, and funded at least in part by LinkedIn magnate Reid Hoffman.

The article implied a future Trump presidency will necessitate new forms of external control over the military. It cited Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal’s bill to “clarify” the Insurrection Act, a 1792 law that empowers the president to deploy the military to quell domestic rebellion. Blumenthal’s act would add a requirement that Congress or courts ratify presidential decisions to deploy the military at home, seeking essentially to attach a congressional breathalyzer to the presidential steering wheel.

NBC’s quotes from former high-ranking defense and intelligence officials about possible preemptive mutiny were interesting on their own. However, the really striking twist was that we’d read the story before.

For over a year, the Biden administration and its surrogates have dropped hint after hint that the plan for winning in 2024 — against Donald Trump or anyone else — might involve something other than voting. Lawsuits in multiple states have been filed to remove Trump from the ballot; primaries have been canceled or invalidated; an ominous Washington Post editorial by Robert Kagan, husband to senior State official Victoria Nuland, read like an APB to assassins to head off an “inevitable” Trump dictatorship; and on January 11th of this year, leaders of a third party group called “No Labels” sent an amazing letter to the Department of Justice, complaining of a “conspiracy” to stop alternative votes.

Authored by former NAACP director Ben Chavis, former Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, former Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair, former North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory, and former Assistant U.S. Attorney and Iran-Contra Special Counsel Dan Webb, the No Labels letter described a meeting of multiple advocacy groups aligned with the Democratic party. In the 80-minute confab, audio of which was obtained by Semafor, a dire warning was issued to anyone considering a third-party run:

“Through every channel we have, to their donors, their friends, the press, everyone — everyone — should send the message: If you have one fingernail clipping of a skeleton in your closet, we will find it… If you think you were vetted when you ran for governor, you’re insane. That was nothing. We are going to come at you with every gun we can possibly find. We did not do that with Jill Stein or Gary Johnson, we should have, and we will not make that mistake again.”

The Semafor piece offered a rare glimpse into the Zoom-politics culture that’s dominated Washington since the arrival of Covid-19. If this is how Beltway insiders talk about how to keep Joe Lieberman or Ben Chavis out of politics, imagine what they say about Trump?…..”

“But in 2020, Bacon got more primary votes in the 2nd District than Trump did. President Joe Biden won the district, giving him an Electoral College vote. Nebraska awards one electoral vote to the winner in each congressional district and two to the statewide winner, which was Trump in 2016 and 2020.

Frei’s candidacy complicates an always competitive race in the state’s most politically balanced congressional district. The 2nd District includes Douglas, Sarpy and Saunders Counties. It has the largest number of Democrats among the state’s three congressional districts.”

The courtroom witnessed tense moments earlier. Judge Kaplan mandated silence, stating, “No interruptions, no audible comments,” following some objections, presumably from Trump’s legal team.

Trump will probably win on appeal,… on the legal grounds that Judge Kaplan just Illegally instructed the jury to reach a high enough financial award to the plaintiff that will Stop Trump from making any further comments that are injurious to her reputation.
