The camellia is a flowering evergreen shrub with dark, glossy leaves and large, lush blossoms that appear and bloom for several weeks during the fall through early spring period in warmer regions. Where it is reliably hardy (zones 7 to 9), the camellia is a very popular plant that is used in much the same way that northern gardeners use peonies. Similarities between peonies and camellias include lushly petaled blooms and a tendency to outlive their owners.

Camellias can be planted from container-grown nursery plants at almost any time of year except during the hottest summer months. They are slow-growing but exceptionally long-lived plants.

Camellia Care

Camellias are best planted in rich, moist soil in a partial shade location. If planting multiple camellia shrubs, space them at least five feet apart. They do not like to compete for water and nutrients with trees in close proximity. They should be planted at the same depth they were growing in their nursery container with the top of the crown slightly exposed.

Know the mature size of your camellia, and plan accordingly if planting close to a window or home foundation. You do not need to amend the soil at planting time; instead, rake compost or well-rotted manure into the top few inches of the soil.

In favorable conditions, camellia is an easy-to-care-for plant that requires pruning only to remove dead branches. However, some gardeners might find them susceptible to a variety of pest and insect problems, which are more serious if the plant is neglected or in poor health.

Light

Camellias thrive in partial shade or in locations that receive dappled sunlight for the entire day, such as the understory beneath tall airy trees. Camellia sasanqua cultivars can tolerate more sun than Camellia japonica cultivars.

Soil

Camellias require well-drained soil, and an ideal soil pH for camellias is within the 6.0 to 6.5 range—slightly acidic.

If your garden soil consists of dense clay and doesn’t drain well, grow your camellia in a container. Smaller cultivars are more suitable for container growth and require large, wide, heavy containers with adequate drainage holes and filled with rich, moisture-retentive potting soil.

Water

Camellias require consistently moist soil. Dry periods that occur during bud development result in fewer flowers with a lower petal count. Drought-stressed plants can also cause spider mite infestations. Twice-a-week watering for a total of one inch of water per week is a good watering schedule. Apply a three-inch layer of mulch to moderate soil temperatures, retain soil moisture, and stifle weeds.

Temperature and Humidity

Camellias are reliably hardy in USDA hardiness zones 7 to 9, although some, especially the hybrids, are known to be hardy in zone 6. Gardeners in colder climates can increase the chances of their camellias surviving the winter by carefully selecting a permanent planting site in the landscape. A northern-facing location has an advantage over a warmer south-facing location. South-facing locations can cause the plant to break dormancy too early, resulting in the loss of flowers to frost damage. A north-facing site combined with a building, hedge, or fence that acts as a windbreak gives cold-climate gardeners the best rate of success.

Fertilizer

Camellias are best fed with a nitrogen-rich slow-release fertilizer, such as 12-4-8 or 16-4-8 applied in three applications: early spring, late spring, and mid-summer. Avoid feeding after August because the new growth that fertilizer promotes can be damaged by cold temperatures.1

The acidity that camellias favor can be provided by a fertilizer designed explicitly for camellias or azaleas.

Types of Camellia

Although camellias are indigenous to Asia, the genus is named for Moravian Jesuit priest Brother Josef Kamel, a botanist, pharmacist, and missionary who classified plants in the Philippines.

The Camellia genus belongs to the Theaceae (tea) plantfamily and includes well over 100 species. But nearly all garden camellias, of which there are hundreds of different types, are cultivars developed from C. japonica (Japanese camellia) or C. sasanqua (sansaqua camellia). A third common species, C. sinensis, is normally grown for tea production, not as an ornamental plant. Additional species sometimes lend their genetics to hybrids.

Some popular garden varieties include:

‘April Dawn’: Reliably hardy in zone 6, this variety has double white flowers streaked with pink.

‘Elfin Rose’: This cultivar has pale pink double blooms that appear in October and November.

‘Fragrant Pink’: This variety has small pink flower clusters with a sweet fragrance that is especially obvious on warm winter days.

‘Francis Eugene Phillips‘: This popular cultivar has highly ornamental fringed foliage and ruffled pink flowers edged in white.

‘Yuletide’: This plant features red single blooms on a compact, four-foot-tall shrub.

    The report confirmed that votes can be altered in the Dominion voting machines. In fact, the report revealed that the Dominion software is vulnerable and can be hacked.

    After the release of the report, Professor Halderman tweeted that Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger would not install Dominion’s security patches before the 2024 election…

    Now this… on Friday, in a Federal Court In Atlanta, Georgia, J. Alex Halderman was able to HACK A DOMINION VOTING TABULATOR In Front Of U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg in the courtroom!

    Group of newly arrived migrants allegedly behind string of burglaries plaguing Chicago suburb: police

    In all, 47 migrants have been arrested since October in the village of Oak Brook, about 20 miles west of the Second City, Chief of Police Brian Strockis told Fox News, adding many of the incidents have targeted a Macy’s in the local mall.

    On Jan. 13, Jaime Ubaldo Obando-Andrade, 32, allegedly tried on a $395 jacket at the department store and walked out without paying for it, according to a news release from DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin’s office.

    Police found approximately $3,000 worth of suspected stolen goods in Obando-Andrade’s car, as well as rolls of tin foil and a fake driver’s license, they said.

    Shoplifters will sometimes line bags with tinfoil to get around theft detection devices in stores, authorities said.

About 30 minutes into counting the first votes of the Iowa caucus, the Associated Press, CNN, NBC, and various other news networks called it for Donald Trump. There was little doubt that the former president would easily dominate the rural state. But the rush to declare him the victor — in violation of policies that prohibit such calls before the polls close — was a blatant attempt to soak up the election night audience.

    This followed another departure from traditional editorial practices when MSNBC and CNN refused to screen Trump’s victory speech. MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, casting herself and her network as defenders of the republic, justified the unusual decision with typical, exaggerated commentary. The more media outlets lean into partisan anti-Trump coverage, the more gleefully he campaigns against the media as a biased institution. It’s a pattern that first took shape nine years ago when Trump launched his campaign with a series of inflammatory statements. Mexican migrants are rapists! Ban all Muslim immigration! Why can’t I call women “fat pigs, slobs, and disgusting animals?” The extreme remarks rolled on.

    In response, the media abandoned objectivity. Journalists inserted themselves into the story, often challenging Trump directly and darkly warning readers to oppose him. The New York Times and Washington Post broke tradition and used the words “lie” and “liar” on their splash to describe a presidential candidate. The media used any opportunity to present Trump in a negative light.
    MSNBC, despite its supposed rule against broadcasting falsehoods, reported salacious stories casting Trump as a Russian intelligence asset. The press pitted itself against the candidate. While popular on cable television, this approach is very much divorced from journalism that seeks to understand why voters were attracted to his message on trade, his unorthodox opposition to foreign military interventions, or the anger he mobilized against establishment elites.

    For his part, Trump embraced this approach, even encouraging his supporters to jeer the assembled journalists at his campaign rallies. “I think the political press is among the most dishonest people that I have ever met,” Trump would say, to be met with uproarious applause.

    All decorum gone, the clashes drove record viewership and unprecedented profits for media corporations. Meanwhile, the endless anti-Trump headlines in the liberal media only made his point about bias while also keeping him right at the heart of every story.

    The profit dynamic was significant. In 2015, Les Moonves, then-chief of CBS News, was giddy with the Trump-driven audience. “Looking ahead,” he told investors, “the presidential election is right around the corner and, thank God, the rancor has already begun.” Moonves, on a subsequent call, claimed the carnivalesque campaign fueled “pretty phenomenal” political advertising revenue. “Go Donald!     The Washington Post and New Yorker enjoyed record circulation.     Refugees leaving German state over new cash rules – BildAsylum seekers in Thuringia can only receive and make payments in their assigned region

    Asylum seekers, primarily from Syria and Afghanistan, have left the central German state of Thuringia after local authorities imposed tough controls on how refugees can spend their benefits, Bild reported on Saturday.

    Shopping is allowed wherever Mastercard is accepted, but the card only works in the region specified by a personalized map, making it impossible for refugees to make transfers to their home countries.

    The newspaper noted that the total number of refugees leaving the country has significantly increased since then.
    Mario Voigt, the head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the State Parliament of Thuringia since 2020, welcomed the initiative, saying Martina Schweinsburg is demonstrating to other authorities how to get refugee policy in order.

    “What the federal and state governments cannot do, strong local communities do,” he said, as quoted by Bild.
    Several other districts have acknowledged the positive impact of the measure and said they will follow suit.

  20. Holy cow! 25 degrees higher than yesterday morning!!! But the wind is bringing the wind chill to negative numbers, in spite of being out of the south. Could get gusts as high as 40 MPH. Finally, out of the negatives! TV news says high now is 4, whereas mine shows 12 – but it’s not out in the wind and faces the east and the sunrise. It will always be higher. High today expected at 26, only dropping to about 23 tonight, near 30 tomorrow. Predicting almost 40 for the following week. I do believe the end is in sight….and our Indian Summer yet to come in Feb. Hmmm…bet we get one more blast before spring really moves in.

          1. Getting to Norfolk next Wednesday is going to be dicey depending on the temps – predicting 33 and rain into Thursday. One way or the other, I have to get there but I’ll find a way – mark my words! I talked to a guy I know from SM (he’s also the town gossip) about possibly giving me a ride. He’s also a veteran and we used to chat a lot. He would also call me to fill me in on the latest gossip. Won’t be able to stop and see Glenn but that’s ok – I’m good yet.

  32. Holy cow! There is a flat-bed tow truck stuck in my neighbor’s driveway!!! He tried to back in – wrong move!!! It’s an extra-long bed, too.

          1. I’m sure he was called on the radio; the tow truck driver ended up parking it, then he attached a snowplow to another big pick-up sitting next to the barn w/the help of the p/u driver. Eventually, he pulled out in the tow truck with the big pick-up, now fitted with the blade, on his flatbed and the other guy following.

    In 2012, Melania shared in an interview with Hip Mama that Barron was “a very strong-minded, very special, smart boy” who is “independent and opinionated and knows exactly what he wants.” She went on to explain that even from a young age, Barron had distinct tastes. He didn’t like childish designs and instead preferred ‘clean white linens,’ she added.

        1. no…it’s the usage crap on the weekend…free time is every morning till 8…then we have so many tokens and if we go above them, we have to pay for more or the speed goes down to dirt slow…it’s a racket because they have have no unlimited plans whatsoever

          1. Dang, that sucks!!! When I quit VW and was looking for an internet provider, I called them once. First off, I didn’t like the fact that they asked for a CC # just to find out the available options. Then they said it was a bad #, which I knew it wasn’t, so I said the heck with it and looked elsewhere.

          my “wood” gloves are leather and are great for grabbing wood without getting splinters and such…but they also inhabit full bending of the fingers so they’re not warm at all…

    “To be clear, it was never Ron we had an issue with. It was that his campaign revolved around tearing down Trump, while constantly attacking and berating his supporters with extreme vitriol.

    RDS influencers were nasty and delusional. His campaign was toxic. It was off-putting.

    But we will gladly welcome Ron back into MAGA, and if you are an RDS supporter, we are asking you to do the same. We know Trump is not perfect, but he is the best chance we have to legitimately dismantle and defeat the Deep State. If that is not your main goal, then you have lost the plot. It’s time for everyone to rally around Trump.”

    for what it is worth on Twitter Bill Mitchell posted a rumor

    that DeSantis dropped out because Trump offered him
    the VP slot. As much as Trump campaign hates DeSantis
    they believe it is best way to unify the party/ and DeSantis
    thinks it is best way to 2028.
