(This month is Dolly Parton’s birthday, so I ‘m bringing this article by Jennifer Pernicano for Country Rebel on things you might not know about the movie 9 to 5.)

The 1980 film 9 to 5, starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton, tells the story of three working women who live out their fantasies of getting even with their “sexist, egotistical, hypocritical bigot” of a boss.

The women eventually overthrow their boss after kidnapping him and holding him hostage in his own house.  While he’s gone from work, the women implement new policies around the office that benefit everyone, including day care, flexible hours, equal pay, and a job-sharing program.

The movie is hilarious, well-written, and for good reason, is ranked No. 74 on the American Film Institute’s list of the top 100 funniest movies in American cinema.

While fans of the movie have probably seen it 100 times, there are still some things we don’t know about it. Let’s take a look at 7 things y’all might not know about 9 to 5!

The Lead Roles Were Written For Tomlin, Fonda, and Parton

Screenwriters often write roles in their movies with an actor serving as inspiration, but it’s rare when you actually get that actor to play the part. Patricia Resnick, who wrote the movie with Colin Higgins, had Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton all in mind when they were writing the film. Jane Fonda was already attached to the film because, well, it was her idea! She then handed the reigns off to Resnick and Higgins.

“We had Jane for sure, because it was her idea to do the film and it was her production company,” Resnick told Rolling Stone. “It was written for Dolly and Lily, but we did not have them under contract. We really wanted them, but we did have some backup ideas in case they turned us down. For Lily, it was Carol Burnett, and for Dolly, it was Ann-Margret. But I had Dolly, Lily and Jane in my head the whole time, and we were really hoping that’s who it was going to be.”

As luck would have it, Tomlin and Parton accepted the roles of Violet and Doralee, respectively.

Lily Tomlin Initially Turned Down The Role

Can you imagine someone else playing Violet? We sure can’t. Carol Burnett is very talented, but no one could have been as hilarious as Tomlin was in this role. It wasn’t because she didn’t like the script, though. She was just working so much; she wanted to give herself a break!

“I turned ‘9 to 5’ down originally. I was shooting ‘The Incredible Shrinking Woman’ and I was so overworked,” she told the UK’s Evening Times. “I’d worked for seven months on that movie, so I was ready to just shut my eyes to anything else. My partner Jane said to me, ‘This is the biggest mistake of your life. You’ve got to get on the phone and tell Jane Fonda you want to take back the resignation’.”

Tomlin took her now-wife’s advice and begged for the job back, and she is so happy she did.

“I am grateful that I did it. [Jane Fonda & Dolly Parton] became two of my good friends, you know.”

Tomlin and Fonda currently star on the Netflix original show Grace & Frankie.

Dolly Wouldn’t Star In The Movie Unless She Could Write The Theme Song

According to The Guardian, Parton got her self-confidence from all her brothers and uncles who taught her everything there is to know about men.

“I understood the nature of men and I didn’t go in there feeling all intimidated,” she said. “I just went in there and said: ‘Hey! I have a good product here and we can all make some money here if y’all wanna get involved with it.’”

This same self-confidence helped her when she refused to let Elvis Presley record her iconic song “I Will Always Love You”, and again when negotiating for 9 to 5. Parton leveraged her skills as a songwriter and agreed to star in the movie, but only if she could write the theme song.

Her song “9 to 5” earned Parton an Academy Award nomination and four Grammy nominations. It won the Best Country Song and Best Country Vocal Performance, Female at the Grammys.

Dolly’s Fingernails Inspired The Song “9 to 5”

Once Fonda agreed to let Parton write the theme song for the film, she went straight to work! She wrote the song on set and used one of her famous body parts to help her.

In 2009, Parton sat down with the ladies of The View, and filled them in on a little secret about her writing process of the song “9 to 5.”

“I wrote that on the set when we were doin’ the movie, I just watched the things goin’ on during the day, and I would just kind of do my nails and it sounded like a typewriter to me.”

‘9 to 5’ Was Intended To Be A Drama

Yes, you are reading that right. One of the funniest movies in cinematic history was initially supposed to be a drama!

“At first we were going to make a drama,” Fonda told The London Times. Fonda ran the production company responsible for the film, IPC Films.

“Any way we did it, it seemed too preachy, too much of a feminist line,” she continued. “I’d wanted to work with Lily [Tomlin] for some time, and it suddenly occurred to [producer] Bruce [Gilbert] and me that we should make it a comedy. It remains a ‘labor film,’ but I hope of a new kind, different from The Grapes of Wrath or Salt of the Earth. We took out a lot of stuff that was filmed, even stuff the director, Colin Higgins, thought worked but which I asked to have taken out. I’m just super-sensitive to anything that smacks of the soapbox or lecturing the audience.”

Even after the drama aspect was thrown out of the window, they re-wrote it to be a black comedy, but Fonda still thought it was too dark. We love the film just the way it is, so we’re glad it took the direction it did!

It Was Turned Into A TV Show And Later, A Musical

9 to 5 the movie had huge success at the box office. In fact, it was the highest grossing movie of 1980! Because of its success, it was adapted for the small screen and ran for five seasons!

Parton’s own sister, Rachel Dennison, played Doralee, Parton’s role in the movie. It also starred Valerie Curtin and Rita Moreno.

Many years later, in 2008, the movie was developed as a musical in Los Angeles! It did so well that it was brought to Broadway and starred Allison Janney as Violet, Stephanie J. Block as Jusy, and Megan Hilty as Doralee. Dolly wrote brand new music for the 9 to 5 musical.

 Dolly Parton Memorized The Entire Script

9 to 5 was Dolly Parton’s movie debut and learned a few things along the way. Instead of just learning her own lines, she learned everyone’s lines!

Parton was already super successful as a singer-songwriter, but had never even been to a set. The closest she had come to a movie set was the tour at Universal Studios!

“They just sent me the script and I memorized it,” Parton said in an interview with The Today Show. “I just assumed you had to. My part and [Lily’s] part and [Jane’s] part and Dabney’s part. But I just knew the script back and forth and every week I would read it … I would practice.”

“How were you in my part?” Lily Tomlin asked her.

“Oh, I was great!” she responded.

    According to details of the case made public by Congress last year, the migrant was apprehended and deemed an Unaccompanied Child or UC. That’s a designation the government gives to children caught crossing without a parent.

    In reality, he was affiliated with MS-13 in El Salvador. Police discovered that with one call to authorities in El Salvador, which lawmakers said begged the question of why Homeland Security and HHS didn’t do that themselves before releasing him.
    Mr. Claypool also said the juvenile had an MS-13 tattoo, which agents should have spotted at the border.

  12. Colorado wants to pay inmates $3000 when they leave prison!

    We’re all taught crime doesn’t pay, but some lawmakers in Colorado’s Legislature apparently didn’t learn that lesson. They propose to hand $3,000 in cash to ex-cons leaving prison. Yes, really.

    Senate Bill 24-012 is yet another proposal from the upside-down world of “justice reform,” in which criminals are recast as victims. The bill’s premise is that paying those exiting prison life for their “basic life expenses” will help them readjust to life on the outside. It is supposed to lower their chances of returning to prison.

    Even if the approach worked, it would be an affront to law-abiding Coloradans.

    The legislation requires recipients of the cash payments to be enrolled in a job-training program — itself, a worthy goal. Maybe career prep should be the bill’s focus, in fact. Many ex-cons are ill-prepared for the job market.

    But to hand cold hard cash to ex-cons — many with an extensive history of substance addiction — sends them a convoluted message and practically invites them back down the path that led them to prison in the first place.

    Cash payments totaling $3,000 — not vouchers, not even a requirement for receipts — cross a line. The money tempts recipients with all the usual bad choices and rewards them for their time behind bars — as if society owed them a debt rather than the other way around.

    It amounts to subsidizing convicts for having led lives of crime.

    1. If we brought back the chain-gangs and paid half of the minimum wage into an account for them…..voila! Their money, they get it when they get out, what they do with it is up to them. Yes, there should be programs they can enroll in – AND PAY FOR – that teach them basic skills, like plumbing, as an example – jobs that don’t require a degree – you know – WORKING MEN!!!

    Been watching Kea’s videos – usually I don’t watch all of them; today, I was in the mood. I’m sure I’ll be considered a coldhearted beyotch (not publicly, of course!) but it is, what it is – I’m tired of people making choices then expecting their employers to pay for those choices. Especially when they likely knew she didn’t qualify for those benefits due to her short length of employment.

    Anywho….it has been -2 all night, just now dropping to -3 – not nearly as cold as predicted but we’ll see what tonight brings. Amazing! You know it’s bad out here when Fox News actually shows NE on their snow segment!!!!

      i did like the movie–but back then i had no idea how whacked out fonda was. i liked Cat Ballou –an old movie of hers.

      hubby put out a corn/apple block yesterday afternoon for the deer–it usually lasts about a week. this morning? it was HALF gone! they must know something about the weather coming…

      1. None of us realized back then! Many people objected to the VN war but most people, I think, just thought she wasn’t being patriotic. We didn’t know! Recall that we thought McShame was a hero, then, too!

        Oh, she posted so many, I can’t point to the specific video. It was one about a couple who chose to adopt a tiny premie baby boy (no relation, mind you, in a different city, I think, but maybe not – IDR) who was going to require a very long hospitalization and expected the same bennies as a long-term employee. She hadn’t been there long enough to qualify for those bennies, which included being allowed to work from home. She wanted it to continue the entire length of the hospitalization, which could be at least a year, as well as other demands. The employer caved and groveled, of course.

        SMH – I’m sorry – yes, it was wonderful of them to adopt the baby and give him a home. But it is NOT right for her to foist the costs of that choice on the company, considering all of the factors involved. Had she gone to her employer FIRST, before the adoption, to make sure these issues would be covered, that would be a different matter entirely. From what I can tell, that wasn’t done.

          and i agree. before i would have made a decision like that i would have considered all the aspects and discussed it with my employer

    the author suggests that all 4 final cases will be thrown out because the prosecutors in these cases have not been properly appointed and therefore everything they touched is fruit of the poisonous tree. (except the Colorado case: a judge has no authority to simply declare something an insurrection)

    Fulton County DA Fani Willis was required by Georgia law to present her plan to hire “special” prosecutor Nathan Wade to the Board of County Commissioners for approval. She did not. She hired her lover, an attorney to be sure, but still a private citizen, contrary to law. This legally excludes him from participating in Grand Jury proceedings, discovery depositions, and the like. We might be inclined to excuse him from knowing her duties, but he failed in his own by not filing his oath paperwork with the Court in a timely manner. Somehow, he remembered that simple task a month after the Trump indictment dropped.

    Jack Smith is, like Nathan Wade, an attorney. At the time of his appointment, he was a private citizen. Unlike the Georgia case, AG Garland did not need to present Smith’s appointment for approval. Rather, he needed Congress to pass a law creating Smith’s office. Then, the President would have to nominate him for that office. Without either of those steps, Jack Smith is not an officer of the federal government. An alternate would be for the new law to allow the Attorney General to make the appointment, but that didn’t happen either.

    You can be forgiven if this is a bit anticlimactic because the outcome is now so obvious. Jack Smith wasn’t involved in the Mar-a-Lago raid, so the defects in that warrant may have to be tackled a different way. But he did convene the Grand Jury, which a private citizen like Smith has no lawful power to do. He had his fingers in a pot full of depositions, evidence analysis, and so on, tainting the lot. As we noted earlier, this taint can’t be washed off, painted over, or in any way purified. Everything he touched must be thrown out.

      1. well…hopefully these challenges make it to SCOTUS. because there is unambiguous language and procedures for becoming a special prosecutor and those procedures were not followed. it’s not merely an “interpretation” of a law. this is flat out plain language stuff.

    What’s the worry? Well, according to the story, “Trump has raised fresh questions about his intentions if he regains power by putting forward a legal theory that a president would be free to do nearly anything with impunity — including assassinate political rivals.”

    Yes, the story is absurd on its face — a legal theory about killing people. Who could fall for nonsense like this? Sadly, scores of propaganda media consumers will believe it, just as they’ve swallowed whole every other lie pushed by the insufferable press the last eight years. But more importantly, the story is meant to alert insiders that this is the play heading into 2024: Build up the narrative that Trump is a dictator who will use his powers in dangerous ways and must therefore be removed by military leaders loyal to the Constitution. In other words, they’re laying down the premise for a military coup should Trump win in November. Let’s call this the “Trump Caesar” narrative.

    It’s the latest in a long series of information warfare operations weaponized to target Trump and lay waste to our Constitutional Republic. In 2016 the media, Clinton campaign, and intelligence agencies colluded on the Trump-Russia operation, designed to recast the world-famous real estate mogul and reality TV host as a secret Russian spy. A disgraced British spy fabricated titillating stories that the FBI used to spy on the Republican candidate and his circle, including General Mike Flynn, America’s Future Board Chair.

    In 2020, the same consortium of spies, media, big tech and political operatives collaborated on multiple operations, all based on censoring information detrimental to the Democratic Party’s candidate. Perhaps most memorably, with the support of current and former intelligence officials, social media platforms and the press censored reports of Hunter Biden’s laptop and the evidence it provided of alleged Biden family corruption. The infamous “51 spies” letter, with signatures from former CIA chiefs John Brennan, Michael Hayden, and Leon Panetta, said reports of the laptop carried all the hallmarks of Russian disinformation.

    The lesser known but perhaps more significant censorship operation silenced all social media criticism of the novel covid-era voting procedures instituted to accommodate the mass hysteria generated by corrupt public health officials. Mass mail-in-voting, ballot harvesting, ballot drop-boxes, etc. were all designed to facilitate voter fraud. Thus, anyone who questioned the integrity of procedures devised to defraud the electorate was banned from social media.

    “Trump Caesar” arrives just as the political establishment’s lawfare campaign is collapsing. Special counsel Jack Smith’s cases are falling apart, and his use of an obstruction statute is likely to be nullified by the Supreme Court. Fulton County DA Fani Willis is alleged to have unlawfully funded the prosecutor on the case, her boyfriend. And reports from the civil suits brought against Trump by sex advice columnist E. Jean Carroll read like surreal comedy skits in a Kafkaesque universe — she’s suing the GOP frontrunner for defending himself against her accusations of sexual assault.

    Americans see what’s happening — and it’s not just the U.S. middle-class beleaguered by three years of destructive Joe Biden policies who are wised up. This week, JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said that the elites should lay off Trump and his supporters, and besides, he added, Trump did a good job on borders, the economy, and China. In effect, the top Wall Street executive gave business leaders across the country the green light to ignore the complaints of their hystericized liberal family members and vote for their interests.

    Not even a month into the New Year, things are looking up for Team America — but we’re hardly out of the woods. The same corrupt ruling class that’s targeted Trump to destroy American peace and prosperity won’t rest until they have total victory. And that’s why our goal is to rout them entirely — and keep America great.”

    B) The team is beta testing potentialities in the MAGA and America First ether, and adjusting internal logistics accordingly.

    Either way, they’re watching public interaction with these deployments, and measuring sentiment. And I think they often start with their most targeted base before traversing the Normie Layers of the Collective Mind.” — Burning Bright

In this particular case, the downer is the U.S. Federal Highway Administration. One would think that a government department as large as this one would have better things to do. However, the Biden administration now is coming after your ability to smile.

    So as of 2026, federal regulators have decided that cute slogans and jokes will no longer be allowed to appear on highway signs.

    The irony of this decision is mind boggling. The administration that seems to care nothing about the invasion taking place at the border, nothing about the poisoning of our children’s minds in public schools, nothing about our weakening of the military through DEI ridiculousness, and nothing about our shrinking global respect, has instead turned their attention to clever highway signs as an issue that needs to be dealt with.

    This has the radical left’s fingerprints all over it. Important issues are ignored, but something as trivial as pleasant road signs are suddenly a crucial issue. Under the new guidelines, that were spelled out in an 1,100-page report, signs cannot display messages intended to be humorous or with pop culture references, or anything that could “diminish respect for the sign.”

    Respect for the sign? Respect for the sign? This sounds like a parody about the incompetence of the federal government. This administration has no respect for anything, and disrespect for everything that is based in American values. Yet here they are meddling in something as trivial as clever road signs. If this wasn’t so sad and weak, it would actually be funny.

    The agency says that such messages can be misunderstood or distracting to drivers and that signs should be “simple, direct, brief, legible and clear.” The signs should be used only for important information such as warning drivers of crashes, weather conditions and traffic delays. Seatbelt reminders and warnings about the dangers of speeding or driving impaired are also allowed. Translation in the eyes of the government we can’t even interpret a road sign by ourselves. There can be no levity, otherwise we may become confused and disoriented. It is an insult to our intelligence, and frankly a slap in the face of every American.

    This is nothing more than another subtle intrusion on individual states. This is the way it begins. The federal government gets their foot in the door over something trivial and it snowballs from there. State laws are again being breeched, and once again our intelligence as Americans is being questioned. Perhaps this administration should realize that the real joke is on them because they themselves ARE the joke.”
