General Description

Known as moose across North America, but called elk in Europe, Alces alces is the largest member of the deer family. The Alaska-Yukon race (Alces alces gigas) is the largest of all of these creatures. Adult moose can range in size from 800 pounds (small adult female) to 1,600 pounds (large adult male), and they can be up to almost 6 feet tall. Moose can range in color from golden brown to almost black, depending on the season and the age of the animal. Newborn calves have a red-brown coat that fades to a light rust color within a few weeks. By late summer, the calves have shed this coat and grown one that is similar in texture and color to that of adults.

Moose are often easily recognized by their antlers, carried only by the males. These bony protrusions form within the first year, and are produced every summer after that. Trophy class bulls are found throughout Alaska, but the largest come from the western portion of the state. The largest sized antlers are usually produced when bulls are 10 – 12 years old, but bulls can reach trophy size as young as 6 years of age. In the wild, moose rarely live more than 16 years.

Hunting

Moose are valued for their meat and as a game animal. At least 7,000 moose are harvested annually in Alaska, amounting to about 3.5 million pounds of meat.

In 2007, Alaskans took home 90 percent of the 7,400 total moose harvested. About 6,750 moose were harvested by Alaskans and 685 by nonresident hunters. The resident take is certainly higher than this, based on information collected by the Division of Subsistence, and considerable unreported or illegal harvest likely occurs in some areas.

Viewing

Wildlife viewing is becoming increasingly important in Alaska. In a questionnaire completed by users of the Koyukuk Controlled Use Area, moose is the species people want to see the most. While the majority of respondents reported they were hunting only, an increasing number of people were both hunting and viewing, or only viewing. Moose viewing is particularly important along the road system.

Managing moose involves looking at predators, habitat, human harvest, other non-harvest mortality (severe winters, vehicles and trains), and the composition of populations – cows, calves and bulls – and these elements are touched upon in this section. Population density, habitat, and harvest vary from area to area, so each Game Management Unit (GMU) is presented separately in this section.

In some areas, habitat limits the potential size of moose populations, and concentration of moose and open habitat creates the potential for excessive harvests in accessible areas. In other regions it is unknown whether predators or habitat are more limiting moose populations, although some are clearly held back by bear and wolf predation. Moose mortality due to vehicles is significant in some areas where human population and vehicle traffic continues to increase. Land clearing activities associated with agriculture, development and road construction has been responsible for the increase in moose browse that attract moose to highways. The number of moose killed by trains seems to be related to snowfall and varies widely from year to year.

Without fire or other disturbance, forests mature and browse – and moose populations – decrease. Fire, mechanical manipulation, and post-logging site work, which encourage hardwood regeneration, are beneficial for moose habitat and have been conducted on some sites. Ice-scouring also helps to rejuvenate willow stands. After logging, if site preparation is not conducted or is done inadequately, blue-joint grass initially crowd out hardwood and spruce seedlings, creating less desirable moose habitat and slowing forest succession.

    we are currently sitting at -2*.
    we have to return the O2 tank today to the hospital and get our mail. hopefully it will be an uneventful trip. yesterday there were plenty of accidents of the highway we need to travel on.

    1. Morning, Pat! Surprise, surprise! I wake up to temp at 13!!! Morning news said there were 35 accidents yesterday just in the Sioux City area. This time it’s colder to the east for a change! But more snow is coming – a little bit today maybe a trace to 1/2″ – temp dropping tonight, with snow thru the day tomorrow. Not a lot of snow, maybe as much as 2″ but a high of only 1 on Saturday, with clear skies, nighttime temp down to -24. Winter in NE! Gotta love it!

      Is he done with the oxygen then? That would be great. Hope you don’t have any issues.

        no, this is the tank the hospital sent him home with until the at home oxygen place could deliver the other ones. he still uses the generator sometimes but not constantly.

    1. Works for me…except for my SS – w/o that, I’m dead! I believed all the lies up until 2013/14, when I finally found out the truth and realized my mistake! Far too late now!!! And I am one of many! Had I known earlier, I wouldn’t have been so generous with my inheritance, giving $ to this person and that person. Don’t get me wrong – I don’t regret helping my Mom, Sis and brother David. But I helped fund HB’s downfall, too, by giving them too much. Hindsight and all!

That composite above would be very easy to make…it’s basically just a split-screen. Easy/peasy. I still don’t believe this is true – there are WAAAY too many people who would have to keep their mouths shut and I can’t see that happening at all.

    It’s hard to think of a worse environmental scandal in recent years than Volkswagen’s 2015 diesel-emissions cheating. The German automaker was rightly pursued by regulators, enforcement agencies and class-action lawyers.

    The scandal ended up costing Volkswagen an estimated $33 billion in fines and financial settlements—and revealed that diesel-emissions cheating was endemic. In 2020 Daimler AG made a $1.5 billion settlement over emissions cheating in Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles. (One of us helped secure that settlement.) Last year engine maker Cummins agreed to pay $1.7 billion to settle claims that it skirted diesel-emissions standards.

    In all of these cases, regulators punished carmakers that had cut corners and misled the public. But when it comes to electric cars, the government has a cheating scandal of its own. That scandal, grabbing far fewer headlines, is buried deep in the Federal Register—on page 36,987 of volume 65.

    When carmakers test gasoline-powered vehicles for compliance with the Transportation Department’s fuel-efficiency rules, they must use real values measured in a laboratory. By contrast, under an Energy Department rule, carmakers can arbitrarily multiply the efficiency of electric cars by 6.67. This means that although a 2022 Tesla Model Y tests at the equivalent of about 65 miles per gallon in a laboratory (roughly the same as a hybrid), it is counted as having an absurdly high compliance value of 430 mpg. That number has no basis in reality or law.

    For exaggerating electric-car efficiency, the government rewards carmakers with compliance credits they can trade for cash. Economists estimate these credits could be worth billions: a vast cross-subsidy invented by bureaucrats and paid for by every person who buys a new gasoline-powered car.

    Until recently, this subsidy was a Washington secret. Carmakers and regulators liked it that way. Regulators could announce what sounded like stringent targets, and carmakers would nod along, knowing they could comply by making electric cars with arbitrarily boosted compliance values. Consumers would unknowingly foot the bill.

    The secret is out. After environmental groups pointed out the illegality of this charade, the Energy Department proposed eliminating the 6.67 multiplier for electric cars, recognizing that the number “lacks legal support” and has “no basis.”

    Carmakers have panicked and asked the Biden administration to delay any return to legal or engineering reality. That is understandable. Without the multiplier, the Transportation Department’s proposed rules are completely unattainable. But workable rules don’t require government-created cheat codes. Carmakers should confront that problem head on.

    TRANSCRIPT: “In December of 2020. Federal Agents Lindsey and Ura approached Mr. Jeremy Brown at his home and asked him if he would be a paid informant for the government. They asked him to infiltrate some groups they were looking at involving concerns they had about an event in January.

    Mr. Brown recorded this conversation and instead of working for the government on January 6th, he went on as many media outlets that would have him, starting in March of 2021, and played the recording. He named the agents and exposed what they wanted him to do. As a result of his righteous actions, the government had him arrested after an illegal search of his home on September of 2021. And after nearly two and a half years in Federal prison, Jeremy has filed for an appeal.

    Jeremy’s legal team is presenting forensic evidence that show the unregistered explosive grenades and the national defense documents that Jeremy was said to have illegally been in possession of, were planted in his home by government agents during an illegal search.

    The first thing the agents did when they entered Mr. Brown’s home for their search, was turn off all fourteen recording devices. And none of these agents had any functioning body cameras. The only person recording was Jeremy’s girlfriend who recorded the arrest by Agents Lindsey and Ura, who instructed her to stop recording, which she did. They were very deliberate in making sure nothing was recorded during their search.

    During this search they allegedly found two explosive grenades and a CD containing national defense documents. Items that Mr. Brown denied knowing anything about. The grenades were tested for DNA and the FBI’s own experts found two male specimen DNAs on the grenades, none of which were from Jeremy Brown. They found a dog hair underneath one of the grenades. Mr. Brown has two dogs so the FBI got a search warrant, took over 50 samples from his dogs, and determined that the hair on the grenade was not from his dogs.

    They found a carpet fiber on the tape around one of the grenades. So they get another search warrant, cut out pieces of Jeremy’s carpet and compare the fibers to the one that was found with the grenade. And they determined it was not a match.

    Criminal counts six, seven, eight, and nine, were allegedly found on a Compact Disk that they claim Mr. Brown carried with him through the desserts of Kuwait and Afghanistan for seventeen years. And yet there isn’t a scratch or a hint of discoloration on it.

    In August of 2022, there was a trace done on that CD to see when it was uploaded. And the evidence shows that Mr. Brown did not have the CD or the two grenades in his possession. They were planted by crooked agents working for a criminal state that has locked up and tortured scores of innocent men and women for a planned false flag event that they orchestrated with so many Federal assets that they lost count.

    This criminal state is now threatening to go after everyone who was in Washington DC on January 6th, no matter if they were in the Capitol or on Capitol grounds. While we are still somewhat free, let us support Jeremy Brown in his legal efforts so that he can free himself and continue to fight for American freedom.”

    Our Take: “China is telling the world to prepare for the return of Trump, and they are spot on in calling the plot in this latest installment of political theater. ‘Trump is so popular, the Global Times assessed, that the biggest obstacle to his return to power is the Democrats’ attempts to remove him from presidential ballots through the court system.’

    China is calling predicting the return of Trump, and the regime is wigging. But this latest announcement from the world’s second superpower has me, as Burning Bright says, ‘comfy.’

    That is, this feels like a wink from the sovereign alliance.

    It doesn’t help China, Biden, or globalism for the Chinese state-run media to prep the collective mind for the return of Trump. It runs contrary to the past three years of continuous narrative deployments that Trump is finished, unelectable, super insurrectiony, and soooo indicted (h/t Chris Paul).

    A progressive Georgia trial attorney just destroyed all the excuses and the “that’s racist!” bleating from the left over the recent legal filing against Fani Willis and her lover, Nathan Wade. Here’s the truth:

    -There are three special prosecutors on Fani’s case. Two are incredibly qualified, while Nathan Wade, her boyfriend, is not.

    -The two qualified prosecutors, combined, have earned less than 1/4 what Wade earned, and at least one earned far less per hour as well.

    -The only other time Nathan Wade was hired as a “special counsel,” it was for the sake of enabling a coverup: “Nathan Wade admitted that, despite spending five months talking to deputies and investigating the issue, he had failed to keep a single note.”

    -Fani repeatedly elongated the legal process so that she could “need” Wade’s help to justify paying him more money. “Willis made choices throughout her prosecution that seem, in hindsight, calculated to require him.”

    -If Fani’s relationship with Nathan Wade is confirmed, it will require disqualifying her entire office from the case, making it virtually impossible for the case to be resolved before November.

    This scandal is real. The left’s fingerpointing and blame has already begun.

    Today, Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County) introduced the Glue Trap Prohibition Act, a bill to place a national ban on the possession and use of glue traps to catch rodents. Glue traps – boards coated with adhesive used to catch and kill pests – are among the cruelest ways to eliminate rodents. In their attempts to escape the glue, animals may tear off their skin, and some may even gnaw off their own limbs. Animals that do not escape die of blood loss, suffocation, or dehydration. Glue traps also pose a public health risk. The CDC urges Americans not to use glue traps, as ensnared rodents can spread disease.
    The traps are already banned in England, Iceland, Ireland, and New Zealand, as well as in over 100 airports across the country. Last year, West Hollywood became the first city in the country to ban glue traps. Congressman Adam Schiff is an original cosponsor of this bill.

    1) In Federal district court , thought they changed NY state law to let her sue , but maybe jurisdictional thing

    2) BUT the SAME Judge as from first trial – Lewis Kaplan age 79 – how is that fair ?

    3) This same Judge wrote after first trial , in motion denying retrial , that HE thought a rape HAD occurred , notwithstanding the Jury finding that it hadn’t and to him it was ‘tantamount to a rape “ even if didn’t fit legal definition – How the hell can he be judge here !

    4) odd fact 2004 ,age 60 marries former Ny times reporter – no mention of earlier marriage or children …

Michael McCaul (R-Texas) and members Brian Mast (R-Fla.), Chris Smith (R-NJ), and Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), has sent a letter expressing concerns about reports indicating that UNRWA is channeling “hundreds of millions of dollars” to Hamas and other foreign terrorist organizations.

    The lawmakers emphasized the distress among their constituents, fearing that taxpayer dollars may have unintentionally supported Hamas terrorists due to alleged failures within UNRWA. They have requested the appearance of UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini before the House Foreign Affairs Committee to address these concerns and answer questions. The committee has set a deadline of January 24th, 2024, for Lazzarini’s response.

    The Biden administration, as the largest donor to UNRWA, has faced scrutiny over the use of funds following Hamas’ invasion of Israel on October 7. The State Department contributed approximately $344 million to UNRWA in 2022, resuming funding after it was cut off by the Trump administration in 2018, citing irredeemable flaws. Since January 2021, the Biden administration has provided over $730 million in U.S. taxpayer money to UNRWA, with an additional $100 million announced in October 2023.

    Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) declared that the days of UNRWA underwriting Palestinian grievances and supporting the diversion of humanitarian aid to terrorist activities are over. Allegations suggest that UNRWA facilities have stored rockets, and their schools have propagated hatred towards the Israeli people. Recent reports from the Israel Defense Forces and media outlets indicate that Hamas terrorists have been stealing UNRWA food and supplies intended for humanitarian purposes.”

    A November report from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Office of Inspector General identified deliberate interference and efforts to divert humanitarian assistance in regions where foreign terrorist organization (FTO) activity is prevalent. The report deemed Biden’s $100 million in funding to UNRWA as high-risk for potential diversion into the hands of FTOs, including Hamas.

    Concerns extend beyond financial matters, as UNRWA has employed teachers who allegedly advocate for violence against Jews and teach from textbooks glorifying terrorism, encouraging martyrdom, demonizing Israelis, and inciting antisemitism. The House panel members also cited reports of Hamas tunnels being found close to UNRWA schools, with terrorists using children and their schools as human shields.

    As of now, UNRWA has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.”
