Today’s offering is The Mushroom House in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In Cincinnati’s Hyde Park neighborhood lies a building that looks like it came right out of a children’s storybook. This is Ohio’s very own Mushroom House, also known as the TreeHouse.

Built by Terry Brown, this landmark marks the great architect’s creative genius. The house took more than a decade to create; construction began in 1992 and ended in 2006. It served as Brown’s secondary residence, architecture studio and teaching tool for his students.

The landmark itself is a simple one-bedroom house. The most prominent features are its copper ceilings and an orange spiral staircase entry. Terry Brown’s creation has porthole windows that sit against a swirling cedar exterior, which is what gives it its fairytale-like appearance. The side of the house is covered in warped shingles that were placed there to resemble the underside of a mushroom. The bulbous roofing gives the building an added fungal look.

The inspiration behind this building came from Brown’s desire to create spaces that would relate to human activity. Brown realized early on in his career that space and people are connected. Hence, he started to build small structures that would feature intimate spaces.

The Mushroom House was the result of experimental architecture. The structure could only be built after many meticulous drawings and complicated geometric calculations. Brown’s aim was to use materials that are not conventionally used to build houses and to combine elements that are not typically combined.

After Brown’s passing in 2008, the hype for the Mushroom House did not die down. The house remains a Cincinnati landmark that attracts people from afar. Currently, the structure is being looked after by Brown’s friend, Paul Lausha. Brown’s other works are exhibited at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Architectural League of New York.

    I can see the thermometer if i turn on the deck lights…it says 32. the snow that fell yesterday on the deck is melted. that’s all i can see. when it gets lighter, we’ll see what the driveway, the pond and the yard look like…

If you don’t put up an argument/fight at the time of the incident, why are you bellyaching about it now??? I am not saying that it would surprise me – not in the least – he is a POS…but…..doing it this way just puts up a flashing neon sign: “MONEY GRABBER”

    Some info on Judge Florence Pan, one of the judges on the 3-judge panel hearing oral arguments on Trump’s appeal of Judge Chutkan’s order denying presidential immunity in J6 case.

    Pan, appointed by Joe Biden, is married to Max Stier–a Dem Party activist and one of Brett Kavanaugh’s chief antagonists. Stier claimed he observed Kav engaged in lewd behavior at Yale–he reported it to FBI and Senate during Kavanaugh debacle. He was recently featured in a film about Kavanaugh that criticized the FBI’s investigation into various claims.

    A longtime DC fixture, Pan has friends in high places.

    From WashPo in 2021: “In one of her first hearings Wednesday, Pan took over the politically sensitive lawsuit brought by 2016 Trump campaign adviser Carter Page against the FBI, Justice Department and several former officials alleging they unlawfully surveilled and investigated him during the FBI’s Russia probe.

    A D.C. veteran, Pan offered to recuse herself from the case, saying she has been friends with a lawyer for defendant Lisa Page, a former FBI attorney. Pan said she has known Page’s attorney, former Justice Department lawyer Amy Jeffress, for 27 years, attended her wedding, and met Page at a party.”

    Jeffress is married to DC District Court Judge Chris Cooper, appointed by Obama.

    Merrick Garland officiated the wedding.

    Although 3-judge panels are supposed to be “randomly” selected, Pan oddly is seated on an unusually high percentage of consequential political cases. She was on BOTH panels to hear arguments on an appeal related to 1512c2, obstruction of an official proceeding.

    Pan was the decisive 2-1 judge in both decisions upholding DOJ’s use of the post-Enron statute. Her lead opinion–and I use that term pejoratively–in Fischer v USA is now under review at SCOTUS.

    While Pan admitted the “novel” use of 1512c2 in J6 cases–more than 300 J6ers slapped with the evidence tampering felony for their conduct on Jan 6 as is Donald Trump–she nonetheless adopted the broadest reading of 1512c2 to uphold DOJs interpretation.

    Pan–and Childs, also on today’s panel–upheld Judge Beryl Howell’s nondisclosure order preventing Twitter from notifying Trump about Jack Smith’s subpoena of his data and Howell’s $350,000 fine against the company. Pan: “The whole point of the nondisclosure order was to avoid tipping off the former President about the warrant’s existence.”

    Pan–and Childs again along with Obama appointee Cornelia Pillard–also upheld Howell’s extraordinary ruling that pierced atty-client privilege btw Evan Corcoran and Trump in classified docs case, forcing Corcoran to turn over all his records to Jack Smith.

    A decision, by the way, that never should have been made in DC since the alleged “crime” happened in southern Florida. Pan expressed no jurisdictional concerns there.

    Pan has been assigned to several panels for appeals filed by J6 defendants. Just last week. Pan denied the appeal of Russel Alford, convicted by a DC jury of 4 misdemeanors and sentenced by Judge Chutkan to 12 months in prison.

    This is the thinking J6ers must deal with. (Henderson, on today’s panel, wrote this but Pan concurred):

    “The trial evidence indicated that, during Alford’s brief time within the Capitol, he was neither violent nor destructive. Nevertheless, we affirm his convictions because a jury could rationally find that his unauthorized presence in the Capitol as part of an unruly mob contributed to the disruption of the Congress’s electoral certification and jeopardized public safety.”

    He was inside for 11 minutes.

    Her performance today was less than compelling–superior, smug, combative, and dull.

    She clearly came in ready to defend DOJ/Jack Smith–and her preposterous hypothetical about a president using Seal Team Six to kill a political rival was a set up to result in all the deadlines we are already seeing.

    As I have suggested to some officeholders and candidates–the DC federal courts must be shut down. These partisans are making some of the most important judicial decisions in the nation’s history and are ill-equipped to do so.

    There’s an overwhelming amount of evidence at this point that Willis’ office is being operated in an entirely unethical and partisan manner, including multiple avenues for coordination with the White House and the Democratic National Committee, and every indictment coming out of the tainted process should be dismissed.

  25. Ah-ha!!! The reason Mom’s phone won’t accept my calls (she insisted it was MY phone)? Nope – when she switched to the Jitterbug Plus flip phone (the smart phone was too big for her, which I always knew it would be but WTH asks me these days???) and the contacts were transferred, mine was entered as “blocked!” SMDH – she is going to try their Customer Support (yeah, good luck with that, altho they should be used to dealing with seniors) and I will look on-line and see if I can find out how to change it.

She wanted to go out to clear the snow off her car and let it run to warm up a bit. She’s either doing that or on the phone with Customer Service. I’m sure I’ll hear from her soon enough.

  26. OK, that was a close one! As I mentioned yesterday, neighbor’s son cleared the snow in front of my mailbox. I heard the snowplow coming and thought back to seeing them in previous winters, slamming these piles of snow into my mailbox as they fly down the road….and I thought: “Oh, no, you DON’T!!!” I ran to the front door just in time to see him slow down and lift the blade as he went past it. Phew! I’d have been royally pissed about that!!!

      1. For now – more to come in the near future, tho – Mom mentioned it earlier – another 5-7 inches predicted by the week-end but the temps go up early next week. It’s winter in NE – all over the map! But Mom and I were talking earlier about how much more snow we used to get here – this kind of snow (actually, more) was expected every winter! Biggest issue right now, tho, is the cold: -3 or -2 as a high on Sat/Sun.

  35. Alrighty then…it is snowing….again…shouldn’t last long here but you never know – wait 24 hours! Mom was able to unblock my number but now, her phone doesn’t ring when I call the number – I can hear it ringing but it doesn’t ring on her end – and my phone doesn’t ring when she calls me, even tho I have both her #’s saved in my contacts. Now she needs to figure THAT out since MY phone is fucked up and I can’t access VM – I could see 5 VM’s had been left so she tried 5 times! And believe me, I tried to get help with VM but I’d have to have an “account” with AT&T for their tech assistance (absolutely nothing on-line or in the phone instructions that I could find) and the company in TX that sent me the phone doesn’t know how to fix it either! She hasn’t tried to call JitterBug yet – she’s more concerned about getting the snow cleared from her car, especially since I told her it is snowing here – with the super cold temps coming, that snow will be like cement if she doesn’t get it off now.

      2. I’m thinking it’s not ringing when she calls me because of poor reception. I was on VW before and their tower is closer to me than the AT&T tower – I’ve only got 1 or 2 bars at the moment – it’s usually not that bad but I guess the snow might have something to do with it. Hell if I know!

    ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has been served with a subpoena to testify in her colleague’s divorce proceeding, an ominous sign that investigators have reason to believe she may have tainted her own case against former President Donald Trump amid allegations of an improper romantic relationship.

    The Wall Street Journal reported that DA Willis received notice on Monday when a process server showed up at her Georgia office requesting she appear in the divorce proceedings of Nathan Wade, a lawyer she previously hired as a special prosecutor in the Trump case. The subpoena, sought by Wade’s wife Joycelyn Wade, was left with Willis’s executive assistant.

    A Willis spokesperson declined to comment but said that a response to the subpoena would be forthcoming, though none has been reported publicly as of Wednesday morning.

    Questions about DA Willis’s romantic escapades surfaced when a Trump co-defendant filed a motion to dismiss her office from their case, alleging an “improper, clandestine personal relationship during the pendency of this case.” Mike Roman, a former Trump campaign official, has been charged alongside President Trump and 16 others with attempting to subvert Georgia’s 2020 election results.

    Ashleigh Merchant, an attorney for Roman, added that a relationship between Willis and Wade resulted “in the special prosecutor, and, in turn, the district attorney, profiting significantly from this prosecution at the expense of the taxpayers.” She claims that documents in the sealed divorce case would substantiate Roman’s claims and requested the judge order them to be unsealed.

    In an interview Monday evening, Merchant said she had reviewed all meeting minutes by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, which is supposed to approve the hiring of special prosecutors. She claims she could not find an instance when DA Willis petitioned for the hiring of Wade.

    Merchant’s filings stunned the Atlanta legal community and quickly gained national traction, putting DA Willis — a previously unknown progressive prosecutors — under the white hot lights of the national stage. Her racketeering case, now before Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, may hinge on whether or not she lived up to the letter of the law in her personal life. She was previously alleged to have engaged in a romantic relationship with a former drug dealer later prosecuted by her office.

    President Trump has maintained his innocence in the case while other co-defendants have sought plea deals in exchange for testimony against him.”

  37. The nice big snowflakes have given way to the tiny flakes, coming down pretty good! I noticed a Cardinal on the WP feeder and decided I needed to put my other feeders back out since the wind isn’t so bad now. Now, it’s bird central! Cardinals, Blue Jays (I put a bigger open feeder out for them), as well as the usual juncos, WPs, nuthatches, sparrows, finches, etc., etc.

    1. Thankfully, we didn’t have too much wind today but, man, was that snow ever coming down! It’s stopped now….for a while anyway! I’ve not gotten a delay notice on my package that’s supposed to be here by 10 pm tonight. I saw a big UPS van go by a couple of hours ago.
