Question: Has Thanksgiving always been celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November?

Answer: No. In 1939, Thanksgiving was celebrated on the third Thursday in November.

You might think President Roosevelt could predict the future, as he channeled a “Black Friday” mindset when he decided to move Thanksgiving during his presidency. Even though the holiday had been celebrated on the fourth Thursday since Lincoln officially recognized the federal holiday decades before, Roosevelt bumped it up a week effectively adding seven more shopping days to the holiday season to boost the economy.

Question: A Thanksgiving turkey mix-up inspired what popular meal trend?

Answer: Frozen TV dinners

In 1953, a Swanson employee accidentally ordered a colossal shipment of Thanksgiving turkeys (260 tons, to be exact). To deal with the excess, salesman Gerry Thomas took inspiration from the prepared foods served on airplanes. He came up with the idea of filling 5,000 aluminum trays with the turkey – along with cornbread dressing, gravy, peas and sweet potatoes to complete the offering. The 98-cent meals were a hit, especially with kids and increasingly busy households. Within a single year, over 10 million were sold and a whole industry was born.

On Thanksgiving Day in 2011, runners at the YMCA Turkey Trot in Dallas, Texas, dressed up in droves and set a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as turkeys. In total, 661 people came wearing their feathered finest. Consider this your inspiration to do the same.

Because the birds came from Turkish lands, Europeans called them the turkey-cock and turkey-hen. 2. As I was writing my previous comment, I flashed back to my years in No. VA….that meme would have applied when I lived in town but, once I had the horses and lived in the country, I would wager my neighbors there would have done the same, too. It’s not so much the part of the US you live in, but the individual communities that make the difference. All small towns are pretty much the same, I think.

          1. my mom’s new-ish neighbors across the street are hispanic (she thinks) I think they are Asian but i haven’t talked with any of them to say for sure. but if they see her struggling to bring in her garbage can, the older woman living there comes rushing out of her house to help my mom. my mom can’t understand all she says to her but the lady always says I do this…you go inside type of thing—very nice. and my mom thinks the lady is older than her! but she walks well.
the man across the street (mom is on the corner) had security cameras on his property because he owns several antique cars. he told mom he had one installed on the side that allows him to see mom’s property–and hopes she doesn’t mind–but it allows him to monitor if anyone tries anything at her house too.
so her neighbors do look out for her too.

            1. So many Americans have been pushed into isolating themselves just for their own security in many cases. The last place we lived was in Manassas city in a residential area, near Old Town, where it was first settled. Manassas now covers miles and miles and miles to the west and many shopping centers where you will find a lot of MS13 gangs. We lived there for almost 2 years yet never ONCE did we even speak to our neighbors on either side of us or around us. I know they had to hear me yelling during the Husker games! We only engaged with the woman across the street our last Xmas there, when the illegal who had stolen an SUV crashed in her front yard!

They are very insular – I noticed that immediately when I first got to No. VA in 1977. People avoid making eye contact so they don’t have to engage. Silly me! I found myself encroaching on personal space ALL THE TIME!!! And fuck you if you don’t like it! SMILE, for fucks sake!!!

if I see a t shirt that i think is funny–I tell the person. if i walk by some lady wearing a great perfume-i politely ask what it is.
i always ask people if i can reach something for them (if they are shorter or in one of those carts)
and most of the time, we strike up a brief conversation…it’s just who i am.
and so are you–which is why we get along!

  3. Question: which college team traditionally played the day after Thanksgiving? Nebraska/Oklahoma, that’s who!!! Huh…I’ve never even heard of “Turkey Trots!”

Wheezer wasn’t present when I first got up, turned on the patio light and took his food dish out; he showed up a few minutes later. But he clearly wasn’t looking for food since he sat down in front of the door and continued to stare at me, ignoring the food. Ok, ok….jacket on and out I go to sit down and dispense some lovin’ – he jumped right up into my lap, motor running full speed. He’s wanting to come inside more and more these days….nope! Sorry dude! 4. first of all, this is NO FEMALE. second of all, look at the info–the cash raised in the fundraising attempt will also go to “the unnamed people running the campaign”. nice right?

    FTA
The website of extremist antifa-linked group, Anarchist Federation, put out a fundraising notice on Nov. 19 about Temael, who uses “she/her” pronouns.

“Dandelion is a transfemme Palauan youth anarchist incarcerated in Florida,” reads the post. “We aim to free her and help support her needs while she is inside.”

Temael was indicted by a Putnam County grand jury on charges of first-degree homicide, first-degree arson, burglary and vehicle theft. Because a judge denied Temael bond, the far-left activists say funds raised for their comrade will go to “maintaining inside contact, software, or other materials,” as well as support for other “marginalized relatives in captivity with her.” Toward the end of the campaign, it says the money will also go to the unnamed people running the campaign.

  6. the article talks about the downward trend of fake meat but I wonder how many “vegans” or proponents of fake meat really know how they make the “sausage”?

    FTA
Oh, so more people would rather just eat real meat than lab-made synthetic horrors? How weird! This fake meat is sold as the “socially-conscious” and “humane” option—but, if you don’t know about the process, let me just tell you, it’s anything but socially-conscious or humane. It still requires cows, meaning the same facilities decried as “environmentally-harmful,” and it still requires slaughter… of both a pregnant cow and her calf in-utero. Talk about gross! After the fake meat industry has had “many years of strong growth” suddenly people are bucking the trend? Why is that?

  7. Well, the nice weather is, I fear, a thing of the past. It’s still only 32 and windy; according to the forecast, it’s still supposed to be in the 50’s tomorrow, when I make my run to Norfolk. After that, temps plunge, possible teens at night and maybe even some snow flurries later in the week. Some rain possible on turkey day. I don’t think I have to worry about getting ice melt quite yet….I hope!

I’ve never set out “to be” anything specific, never dreamed of being anything specific, always just took each day as it came….adjusting as needed, learning as needed, thinking on my feet, to accomplish my goal of simply surviving comfortably.

  9. I’ve been saying this for years!!!

EXCERPT: “Playing a role in the sudden rise of transgender children may be “transhausen by proxy,” a term coined for narcissistic parents who push so-called “gender transitioning” on their children, some experts say. Celebrities are increasingly in the limelight with announcements about their children who come out as transgender or nonbinary. Nonbinary individuals identify as neither male nor female.

“Transhausen by proxy” isn’t an officially recognized psychological condition. It’s a play on an official condition known as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (MSBP). MSBP is a mental illness that’s also sometimes called medical child abuse or factitious disorder imposed on others. It’s exhibited mostly by women seeking attention by exaggerating or making up an illness of children or others in their care.

Transhausen by proxy has very real effects on society, experts told The Epoch Times. They point to headlines like the one on Pride.com in May, which gushes: “15 Celebs Who Are Out & Proud of Their Trans & Nonbinary Kids.” The article praises stars such as Cher, Sade, Jennifer Lopez, and Charlize Theron for supporting their children who reject their biological sex.” — The Epoch Times

    Anthony Robledo, USA TODAY

EXCERPT: “A large Navy aircraft overshot the runway at a U.S. Marine base in Hawaii on Monday, landing in the water. Nine Navy personnel were inside the plane that landed in Kaneohe Bay just before 2 p.m., according to base spokesperson Hailey Harms. All nine people returned to shore safely and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the incident was under investigation. Harms said the aircraft “did overshoot their landing” on the base’s runaway, about 10 miles from Honolulu. The crew inside were part of a Washington based squadron VP-4 “Skinny Dragons” stationed at Whidbey Island in Washington state, according to the Marine Corps.

“First responders and emergency crews acted immediately to conduct an initial assessment and employed a temporary floating barrier, which is used to protect the environment,” Marine Corps spokesperson Mohammad N. Issa said in a statement….”

LOL – one winter, when HB and I were in the process of moving from the horse farm into a TH in Centerville with my friend, Mary, neither she nor I could afford a tree so we took her IROC Z28 out to the farm, tramped out into the woods and cut down a tree. We used her Z because she had a hatch-back and we shoved the tree in the back.

We got it all set up in the stand and started decorating when we noticed drops of sap on the tips of the branches….duh! We used a sheet as the tree skirt that year!!!

“Germany preparing to accept ‘large influx’ of Gaza refugees, leading newspaper reports; Operations at the German embassy in Cairo are causing concern for security officials who claim that Hamas terrorists could slip into Germany under family reunification laws”
    November 21, 2023
editor: REMIX NEWS author: THOMAS BROOKE

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Fears are mounting in Germany that the federal government is preparing to accept a large influx of refugees from bomb-stricken Gaza, the country’s biggest-selling newspaper has reported. According to Bild, staff at the German embassy in Cairo have erected a large makeshift processing center on its grounds and recruited crisis support teams to assist with applications.

The foreign office in Berlin announced on Monday that it was successfully repatriating hundreds of German citizens from the war-torn region, but security personnel are reportedly concerned that Germany will soon play host to a larger reception of asylum seekers.

“We have so far been able to ensure that around 320 Germans, including their family members, have been able to leave Gaza safely,” Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Monday, but when her office was pressed by Bild on how many of those being brought to Germany were actual German citizens, it opted not to reply. Photographs from the garden of the German embassy in the Egyptian capital suggest a larger operation may soon swing into action, with several staff setting up shop at workstations tasked with handling asylum applications.

“The construction of processing stations under a tent roof in the embassy garden suggests that Minister Annalena Baerbock’s department may be preparing for a larger influx of Gaza refugees,” Bild reported. The newspaper revealed there is now “great concern” among security officials that members of the Hamas terrorist organization may be flown to Germany under family reunification rules, as the Islamic militant group seeks to flee the oncoming Israeli ground invasion — a retaliatory measure following Hamas’ slaughter of more than 1,300 Israeli civilians in a terror attack on Oct. 7.

Opposition politicians are calling for the federal government to take action to prevent such a scenario. “The federal government must ensure that it does not bring Hamas supporters or even terrorist murderers into the country,” said Andrea Lindholz, the CSU’s security spokesperson and vice-president of its parliamentary party in the Bundestag. “To achieve this, thorough police work by German and Israeli authorities is essential before departure from Cairo,” she added.

The scenario has striking similarities with the aftermath of the conflict in Syria when members of the Islamic death cult ISIS infiltrated Europe claiming to be asylum seekers. It was confirmed that at the peak of the last migrant crisis to envelop Europe back in 2015, at least one of the terrorists responsible for slaughtering dozens in Paris had entered the European Union with a Syrian passport, portraying himself as an asylum seeker. “These individuals took advantage of the refugee crisis… of the chaos, perhaps, for some of them to slip in” to Europe, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls told the National Assembly at the time.”

  13. okay, I know math is hard–but if you’re driving a 13′ 4″ tall trailer you should AVOID openings of only 10′ 6″…

A Lancaster County covered bridge is closed until further notice after being hit by a tractor-trailer yesterday morning.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said that it has closed the covered bridge on Cider Mill Road over the Conestoga River in West Earl Township. A detour uses Farmersville Road (Route 1010), Route 322 and Pleasant Valley Road.

  14. I don’t know if i buy this line of crap…Xi asked ultra maggot for a $900 BILLION bailout for the chinese economy?

    FTA
A significant source in the PRC has reported that Xi formally asked the US President to arrange an urgent $900-billion bailout for the communist Chinese economy. This specific detail could not be confirmed, but it fitted with the sudden and urgent campaign to stop Beijing’s bellicosity toward the US and to insist that the two could be friends and partners.

The leak of this information came from within the CCP, from elements anxious to bring down Xi Jinping, and they confirmed that the effort to remove Xi was now reaching a level of imminent action.

Without that injection of almost a trillion US dollars, the Chinese property market, among other things, will complete its collapse. Indeed, even with such an investment, it is probable that the mainland Chinese property market and overall economy would continue its slide. The scale of private sector bankruptcies and the interruption and closure of so many factories cannot be reversed overnight, and foreign trust in the PRC cannot be rebuilt overnight.
