Urban Legends From Every State Part 2

From Reader’s Digest:

Montana: The Haunting of Chico Hot Springs Hotel

The mysterious “Lady in White” supposedly roams the corridors of the Chico Hot Springs Hotel in Pray, scaring guests and staff members. People have reportedly seen the ghost of a woman in white, many times leading them into room 349, only to find an empty rocking chair swaying back and forth. Her rocking chair is sometimes found in other rooms as well, always facing the window, no matter the position the last person left it in.

Nebraska: The Hatchet House

The urban legend of the “Hatchet House” of Portal reminds us of those scary ghost stories we used to tell each other at camp. As the legend goes, a school teacher from long ago went insane and decapitated all her students in the one-room schoolhouse. Afterward, she placed their heads on their respective desks and took their hearts to a nearby bridge, throwing the organs into the water. People say you can still hear the hearts beating if you cross it, hence the name “Heartbeat Bridge.” We dare you to try it.

Nevada: The Aliens at Area 51

Publicly known as the place where the military tests out some of its most advanced weapons and technology, conspiracy theorists and urban legend die-hards suspect that it’s also where the U.S. government stashes the UFOs it doesn’t want us knowing about.

New Hampshire: The Legend of Chocorua

Mount Chocorua was named after a native American chief who lived in the early 1700s. Legend has it that he left his son with the Campbell family while he went away on tribal business. While under the family’s care, the son died (perhaps accidentally, perhaps not). To exact revenge, Chief Chocorua killed the white man’s wife and children. Then the surviving Campbell chased Chocorua to the top of a mountain and shot him dead, but not before the Chief had placed a terrible curse upon the land. It is said that the land, now known as Chocorua Lake Conservancy, will inflict suffering and death on anyone who tries to live there or drink from its rivers.

New Jersey: The Ghost Boy of Clinton Road

The ghost of a young boy is said to reside beneath one of the bridges on this road in Passaic County in northern New Jersey. According to legend, he’s quite helpful, not to mention honest: If you drop a coin into the water, he will return it to you within 24 hours. It has become a rite of passage for local teens to go test it out.

New Mexico: UFO Crash at Roswell

In 1947, something big, really, really big, crashed on a ranch northwest of Roswell. Members of the U.S. military quickly came to retrieve the debris, which led some to believe that it was something they wanted to cover up—a UFO, perhaps? Adding to the mystery, Jesse Marcell Jr., son of one of the military officers charged with clearing the site, later described the debris he saw his father bring home as being made of lead foil with “I”-beams. According to Roswell UFO Museum, “He recalled the writing on the ‘I’-beams as ‘Purple. Strange. Never saw anything like it … different geometric shapes, leaves and circles.’” The U.S. government maintains it was a weather balloon that crashed, but urban legend tells a different story …

New York: The Legend of Cropsey

Staten Island’s “Cropsey” has been a local legend for decades, gaining national attention when the documentary of the same name was released. The story goes that Cropsey had a hook for a hand and was a patient at the Willowbrook State School. He would come out late at night to hunt and chase local kids with his hook hand. In truth, a series of child murders did take place in that area of Staten Island in the 1970s and 1980s.

North Carolina: The Beast of Bladenboro

Many regions in the United States have their own urban legends of a story about a mutant creature in the woods who kills viciously and indiscriminately. In North Carolina, it’s the Beast of Bladenboro, described by locals as a panther-like, bloodthirsty killer lurking in the darkness. It is said to have attacked numerous dogs and even people. Watch your back!

North Dakota: The Miniwashitu

Next time you’re on the banks of the Missouri River in North Dakota, keep an eye out for the Miniwashitu of North Dakota, a giant, red, hairy monster with sharp spikes along its back, a horn and only one eye. If you look at it, blindness, insanity and even death are said to soon follow. So on second thought, don’t keep an eye out for it!

Ohio: Gore Orphanage

In the 1800s, there was a deadly fire at the aptly named Gore Orphanage in Lorain County. Tragically, every single orphan in the institution perished. Locals say if you visit the site where the orphanage stood, you can still see the ghosts of the dead children, hear them playing or smell their burning flesh.

Oklahoma: Shaman’s Portal

People have allegedly disappeared into thin air upon setting foot in these dunes in Beaver Sands, also known as Oklahoma’s Bermuda Triangle. It’s believed that a UFO crashed here, opening a door to another world.

Oregon: The Bandage Man

The ghost of a man who was supposedly chopped into bits at a sawmill terrifies Oregon residents and urban legend believers to this day. They call him the “Bandage Man,” because, well, his entire body is wrapped in bloody bandages. Mostly, he is said to attack people who drive through or park their cars in Cannon Beach.

Pennsylvania: Eastern State Penitentiary

The Eastern State Penitentiary of Pennsylvania is a real place that was shut down due to its exceptional cruelty toward inmates. Each cell and chamber has its own set of hauntings and terrible tales, and walking through it is supposed to feel like walking through the pit of hell itself. If you’re the type who likes to experience the macabre, you can take a tour on Halloween. You must sign a liability waiver before entering, though.

Rhode Island: Fingernail Freddie

If this sounds familiar, it’s because the Rhode Island legend of Fingernail Freddie is supposedly the inspiration for The Nightmare on Elm Street. In this version, Fingernail Freddie is a wild woodsman with insanely long fingernails who comes out at night to attack campers with his talons.

South Carolina: The Legend of Lavinia Fisher

Known as America’s first female serial killer, Lavinia Fisher was certainly not dainty about her kills: In the 1800s, she and her husband John ran an inn, where they had the unfortunate habit of killing off many of their guests. They would poison them, then when the poor person had fallen asleep, drop them down a trap door. One victim managed to escape, and the two were found out, resulting in their execution. Now people say the ghost of Lavinia Fisher haunts the Charleston jail where she was executed.

South Dakota: Walking Sam

Walking Sam of South Dakota is a bit like the notorious figure from the Slenderman video games: an unnaturally tall, skinny and creepy character. Those who cross his path are induced to commit suicide, and his favorite prey is young teens.

Tennessee: Skinned Tom

As the story goes, in the 1920s, a young man named Tom once took his lady friend to the local Lover’s Lane. He didn’t know it, but the woman he was so enamored with, was, in fact, married. Her husband found the two canoodling in their car, murdered the wife and then skinned Tom alive. Folks say Tom still hangs around Lover’s Lane, ready to kill those who dare to commit adultery.

Texas: The Lechuza

In South Texas, after you’ve had a beer or two, you’ll need to be on the lookout for the lechuza. Depending on the version of this urban legend being told, this incredibly large owl is either a brouha’s (witch) or a familiar woman by day, bird by night. Her child was killed by a drunk, so she is on the prowl, looking to take revenge on bar patrons stumbling out onto the street after closing time.

Utah: The Curse of the Escelante Petrified Forest

Visitors to Escelante Petrified Forest in the Black Hills of Utah are cautioned to leave what they find behind. Legend has it that anyone who takes so much as a rock or a piece of wood will suffer intense misfortune. Car accidents, broken bones and even job loss are said to have befallen those who dared to ignore the warning.

Vermont: The Brattleboro Retreat Tower

Built as part of an insane asylum in the late 1800s, the Brattleboro Retreat tower was soon closed off after a number of patients supposedly committed suicide by flinging themselves from the top. The tower remains standing today, and people say that if you dare visit it, you’ll see ghosts plunging to their deaths over and over, like an old tape replaying itself.

Virginia: Bunny Man Bridge

As the story goes, in 1904, some of the most dangerous patients from an insane asylum in Clifton, Virginia, were being moved to a prison when the bus crashed on Fairfax Station Bridge. The inmates attempted to escape, but only one was successful. He left a trail of dead, skinned, half-eaten rabbits, hanging many from the bridge that was the scene of the crash. Then on Halloween night of that very same year, several teens hanging out under the bridge were attacked at the stroke of midnight—and met the same fate as the bunnies.

Washington: Maltby’s 13 Steps to Hell

In Maltby Cemetery in Maltby, you’ll find a set of 13 steps leading down into an underground crypt. Urban legend has it that anyone who makes the regrettable decision to climb down those steps will be met with a vision of hell so terrifying it will drive them to insanity.

West Virginia: The Mothman

Yes, this is the same “Mothman” from the movie, The Mothman Prophecies. The final scene of that movie is a retelling of a take on an event that actually happened in 1967: The Silver Bridge that connects Point Pleasant, West Virginia, with Gallipolis, Ohio, collapsed at the height of rush hour, killing 46 people. According to legend, it was the Mothman, the great bringer of death, who caused the accident.

Wisconsin: The Bloody Headstone at Riverside Cemetery

This urban legend tells of a local woman by the name of Kate Blood (fitting, right?), who is said to have killed her husband and three children, after which she committed suicide. Her headstone at Riverside Cemetery in Appleton allegedly drips with blood every full moon. (Though if you do visit, a glance at her headstone will quickly debunk the legend: She was outlived by her husband and her only child.)

Wyoming: The Jackalope

The large bunny creature with antelope horns is a well-known character in Wyoming’s culture, history, landscape and urban legends. Some people say they’ve most definitely seen it, while others shrug it off as fairy tale. What do you think?

    1. Morning, Pat! Still dark here, of course, but warmer at 57 – supposed to drop drastically by this week-end so I’ll enjoy it while I can. Wheezer was sleeping in MY chair this morning on the patio, where LM slept all the time. He jumped down as soon as I opened the door and put his food dish down but he didn’t immediately turn to the food like usual, instead trying to follow me inside! Huh…since Jake was right there, I couldn’t let him do that. I let him eat for a few minutes and when he turned away, I went back outside and sat down in the chair to see if I could get him on my lap. Nope, but he laid down next to me and rolled around, showing his belly and letting me rub it and scratch his ears and chin, purring loudly. No convincing him my lap was a good place to be. It crossed my mind a few days ago that he may have a hearing problem. He hasn’t reacted like other cats do to sounds. I snapped my fingers right over his head and he didn’t flinch or anything. Every cat I’ve ever known has responded to a loud “psss, psss, psss” – a shortened puss-puss call – but he shows no indication that he even hears it.

        1. Not that I’m aware of – he doesn’t have them as bad as LM did and LM had no problems with his hearing. I’ve considered him maybe getting run over or ambushed by other cats or a dog, for that matter. That ups his chances a little of eventually turning into a house cat.

    MacGregor:
“We’re tired of all this Republican Democrat nonsense because the truth is that it doesn’t matter who you vote for, you get the same damn policies. We have in Washington this thing we call the Uniparty. The Uniparty is owned by various lobbies some of those are corporate some of those are foreign. Some of them are pharmaceuticals. Found a way to essentially buy up politicians. We know that. That has to go away. I think it will as a result of where we are headed financially. We’ve got to return to a very simple formulation. Faith, family, country. What we’ve seen with this government we have is a systematic attempt to destroy the family…
Stop the interventions. We want to restore the rule of law. We seemed to have lost our intestinal fortitude. Our guts. Our courage to do what is necessary to protect our society.
We’ve got to close our borders. We can’t afford them. These things have to happen. We absolutely must halt the sexualization of our children. An appeal across party lines. There are lots of good people who can agree about these things. We need to come together and we need to go after these people in Washington. We need to force this agenda onto Washington. Get out of this terrible pit of despair that we are currently wandering in.”

Virginia student,14, crowned America’s top Young Scientist and awarded $25k after developing soap that treats SKIN CANCER

A 14-year-old boy has been named America’s Top Young Scientist for developing an affordable bar of soap that treats skin cancer.

Heman Bekele, a ninth grader at W.T. Woodson High School in Annandale, Virginia went head-to-head with nine other finalists in the 2023 3M Young Scientists Challenge and took home the $25,000 grand prize.

Bekele made the cancer-fighting soap by infusing medicinal soap with three ingredients that have been found to reactivate dendritic cells that generate an immune response to combat cancer.

Not only does his soap help fight skin cancer, but Bekele found that each bar costs just $0.50, compared to the more than $40,000 needed for current medical treatments.

Over the next five years, Bekele hopes to refine this novel innovation and create a nonprofit organization to distribute this low-cost solution to needy communities…

    1. I knew with that name he was probably an immigrant and I was right. I also figured that a mainstream site would address that and I was right about that, too! LOL

“Bekele was born in Addis Ababa, Ethipioa, and moved to the United States when he was four years old. His mother and special education teacher, Muluemebet Getachew, describes him as “self-driven” and says he began exploring science at a young age.

Witnessing the accomplishment of her son’s brilliance over the weekend, she expressed feeling, “incredibly happy” and “very overwhelmed.”

Bekele’s achievement was a year and a half in the making. As a 12-year-old, he formulated the initial idea for the bar soap. His curious nature spurred him to explore the topic of skin cancer and its effects in disadvantaged regions.

“I was looking into the issue of skin cancer and the fact that, especially in third world countries, people living under the poverty line just can’t afford the treatment necessary for skin cancer led me to try to come up with a solution and that solution ended up being a Skin Cancer Treating Soap,” Bekele said. He added, “It took about a year and a half to develop, but it’s at the stage where it’s at today, and of course there’s still a lot left to create this part of soap.”

Bekele worked for four months alongside his mentor, Deborah Isabelle, a product engineering specialist in 3M’s Automotive Aftermarket Division….”

    2. This article is interesting to me – because I just had to have a fingernail size skin graft due to long-neglected skin cancer on face (under nose piece of eyeglasses). I won’t neglect skin cancers again…I hope.

      Original article – Daily Mail:

Herman Bekele made skin cancer fighting soap – infused with salicylic acid, glycolic acid and tretinoin.

“The teen started researching skin cancer and learning about dendritic cells, which he said help protect the skin by boosting immune response.
Bekele’s video submission for the competition explains that the three ingredients, salicylic acid, glycolic acid and tretinoin, are keratolytic agents that break down the skin’s outer layers.
This allows toll-like receptors, proteins that play a key role in the innate immune system, to be released into the skin that latch on to and reactivate dendritic cells.”

JUST IN: Donald Trump is mounting what appears to be the heart of his effort to derail the election-subversion case against him in Washington, D.C., filing three motions tonight to dismiss the case:

    1) On constitutional grounds
    2) On legal grounds
    3) For selective prosecution
Trump’s filings boil down to a few points:

    1) The charges criminalize his constitutional right to petition govt

    2) The charges fail as a matter of law (he didn’t use “trickery” against govt, he didn’t act “corruptly” to obstruct Congress)

    3) The Senate acquitted him already.
He also wants at least an inquiry on “selective” prosecution, citing reporting on Biden’s views/comments about the case.

Prosecutors will have a chance to respond to these motions in the next few weeks.

  4. wow…long article detailing newscum’s interest in and promoting of a chinese linked company.

    FTA
During his trip to China to discuss climate change (and “combating xenophobia,” but nothing else), California Gov. Gavin Newsom toured the Shenzhen facility of electric automobile manufacturer Build Your Dreams (BYD) and tested out their newest product.

.@GavinNewsom gets behind the wheel of @BYDCompany’s newest vehicle & checks out the self turning mode.

It’s a hybrid, that drives itself and can also float on water.

Price starts at $160,000. Available now in China. They hope to bring them to America soon. @FOXLA pic.twitter.com/aOKXzaGLcz
    — Elex Michaelson (@Elex_Michaelson) October 24, 2023

Great! With a $3,200 down payment and a new car loan at, say, 6.34 percent, your payment will be only $3200 – and that’s without California sales tax. Then we have registration fees, some of which vary by county and city in the state. If you live in Santa Monica, you can expect to pay $17,357 in registration fees on top of that purchase price. THEN, figure out what you’re going to pay to charge it – when there aren’t rolling blackouts.

If you’re still excited about this vehicle, perhaps because you believe Gavin’s law about outlawing gas-powered vehicles sometime in the near future in California will actually come to pass, you then have to hope that it won’t stall out when going uphill. That’s the problem BYD’s electric buses have historically had, including fleets provided to various California agencies. From a May 2018 Los Angeles Times investigative report:

When Chinese battery maker BYD Ltd. approached Southern California officials in 2008 touting ambitious plans to build electric cars, local politicians jumped at the promise of thousands of jobs and cleaner air.

In the nine years since, agencies have awarded BYD grants, subsidies and public contracts worth more than $330 million for its battery-powered buses, forklifts and trucks. The company is positioned to be a prime supplier of electric buses to the nation’s second-largest system, as Los Angeles’ Metro sets a 12-year deadline to abandon fossil fuels.

But largely unbeknownst to the public, BYD’s electric buses are contending with a record of poor performance and mechanical problems.

A Times investigation found its buses stalled on hills, required service calls much more frequently than older buses and had unpredictable driving ranges below advertised distances, which were impaired by the heat, the cold or the way drivers braked.

In November of that year, the City of Albuquerque returned their BYD buses:

Albuquerque, New Mexico Mayor Tim Keller has announced the city’s plans to reject and return all 15 of the electric buses manufactured by the US subsidiary of Shenzhen-based automaker BYD, also known as Build Your Dreams.

Although the city cited a number of quality and safety concerns ranging from electrical issues to brake failure, the chief issue seemed to be with the vehicles’ batteries. The contract with BYD calls for buses to operate for 275 miles, yet according to city officials, the buses are unable to go more than 177 miles before they need recharging. Mayor Keller also referenced problems with the batteries overheating and having inadequate fire protection.

Newsom’s a continued fan, though. Since their electric vehicle business needed a little retooling, during the COVID-19 pandemic BYD switched to manufacturing PPE and landed a massive $1.4 billion contract with the State of California in April 2020. That contract was controversial because it was a no-bid contract, then BYD failed to get NIOSH certification in time and failed to deliver the masks as scheduled. Newsom could have canceled the contract due to that, but he didn’t… he just wired them more money, and waited – while his state was locked down.

It was reported at the time that Newsom had received a $40,000 contribution from a BYD executive in the United States, who oversees their manufacturing facility in Lancaster, CA, and California Globe’s Katy Grimes uncovered a trail of influence leading from BYD’s lobbyist straight to Gavin Newsom:

The prominent lobbyist who represents BYD is Mark Weideman of The Weideman Group. The governor’s campaign received $40,000 from BYD’s automotive division.

Weideman also represents Bloom Energy, a fuel cell manufacturer in San Jose, which recently retooled its facility to rehabilitate ventilators for COVID-19 patients.

Weideman also represents NextGen America, owned by Tom Steyer, Newsom’s economic recovery committee chairman whose failed presidential campaign petered out in late February.

Mark Weideman’s wife is Jennifer Wada, an attorney who now has a government relations business – Wada Government Relations Group. It is not common knowledge even among Sacramento insiders that Wada and Weideman are married.

Wada previously was a partner in Wada, Williams Law Group. Her former law partner is Anthony Williams, who is now Gov. Newsom’s Legislative Affairs Secretary, although news reports from 2018 also called Williams Newsom’s “chief lobbyist.”

Even Vice wrote a negative article about the company in April 2020 criticizing its safety record and ties to the CCP. But that was only because the Trump-era FDA approved BYD’s application to supply PPE to the United States. It’s doubtful that Vice would even consider running this article today. (Don’t worry; I’ve archived it.)

BYD is a major global player in the electric vehicle and lithium battery markets, it also has glaring red flags on its record, experts warn, including a history of supplying allegedly faulty products to the U.S., ties to the Chinese military and Communist Party, and possible links to forced labor.

BYD also has no history of making personal protective equipment, and yet days after the FDA approval, it secured a $1 billion deal to supply masks to California.

In fact, Congress was so concerned about BYD’s ties to the CCP that a bipartisan bill banning the use of federal funds to purchase BYD’s electric buses was passed that went into effect at the end of 2021.

And, links to forced labor? Newsom definitely won’t ask his gracious hosts in Shenzhen about that. That might be xenophobic and disrespectful of their culture.

Newsom still claims that he is not contemplating a POTUS run, and says his office has coordinated with the Biden administration on this visit. However, he felt he needed to make a big point to Chinese officials by saying that no matter what happens on a federal level, Beijing’s always got a friend in him.

  5. a lawyer lies and cheats to get illegal aliens benefits and citizenship

Federal investigators are searching for a Chicago immigration attorney accused of helping his clients file immigration forms filled with sham marriages, fake jobs and false accusations of domestic abuse.

Mohammad Reza Baniassadi, owner of The Law Offices of Reza Baniassadi, faces one count of conspiracy to commit immigration fraud and five counts of falsifying applications for immigration benefits. Each count of falsifying immigration applications is punishable by up to ten years in prison. The conspiracy count carries up to five years in prison.

Baniassadi, 65, is considered a fugitive, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. A person who answered the listed phone number for Baniassadi’s law firm said Monday that Baniassadi was out of the country.

Prosecutors alleged Baniassadi and two employees gave false information to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on behalf of foreign national clients seeking U.S. immigration benefits. That included made-up jobs, sham marriages, cheating on civics tests and false accusations of domestic abuse.

Baniassadi told clients to enter into sham marriages with U.S. citizens, helped them cheat on oral civics exams, falsified claims of spousal abuse and fabricated job offers from U.S. companies, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors indicted Baniassadi in August 2022. The indictment was unsealed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Chicago.

The indictment alleges that from 2013 to 2020 Baniassadi and two unnamed employees used tricks to get around obstacles to immigration.

For example, prosecutors said Baniassadi had one employee pretend to be a translator for his clients to “mistranslate and falsely provide to the immigration officer the correct answers to questions on the civics test that the client had not correctly answered.”

Prosecutors also claimed that Baniassadi would tell clients to see a psychologist he chose and coach them on stories about abuse. He would also tell clients he knew were happily married to get divorced. In some cases, he arranged for fake employment offers, according to the indictment.

Baniassadi did not immediately respond to a call from The Center Square on Monday seeking comment on the charges.

  7. “Nebraska beats Wisconsin in showdown for No. 1”

ENTIRE ARTICLE @ NCAA.com: “Nebraska coach John Cook tipped his red cowboy hat to salute the Huskers’ top-2 victory as thousands of fans lingered in the sold-out Devaney Center to celebrate No. 2 Nebraska’s 3-2 (25-22, 17-25, 20-25, 26-24, 15-13) win against No. 1 Wisconsin. The win halted the Badgers’ streak at 10 in a row in the series.

Nebraska took the first set, but the Huskers lost their momentum and dropped the next two — hitting .016 during the second and third set combined. The Huskers continued to play from behind in the fourth, but kept the match in check and forced a fifth set with three consecutive kills by Harper Murray, Andi Jackson and Bekka Allick.

Three final bombs from Harper Murray decided the match. Murray notched a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs, but was held to a .091 clip on the evening. Outside hitter Merritt Beason attacked from the front and back line, killing 21 — one off from her career high — on 52 swings and digging up seven.

This match wouldn’t be recapped properly without credit given to the Wisconsin block. The Badgers denied balls left and right specifically in the second frame, stuffing 12 — this was double than what they blocked the rest of the match (totaled 18 overall), and also double what Nebraska blocked the entire match (7).

With this win, the Huskers remain undefeated — 19-0 — and snapped Wisconsin’s 18-match win streak. Nebraska will most likely take the Badgers’ No. 1 spot in the AVCA rankings, which Wisconsin has held since Week 1.”

      1. I’ve had only childhood jabs and those required by the military, with one more tetanus booster that turned me off of jabs completely. The only chronic conditions I have are caused directly by my smoking – my lungs and I think my sinus issue is connected as well!

          1. I cannot recall even one time since I was a child that I ever got the flu – not once!! Any illnesses I got were due to smoking, head colds or reactions to medications, like the BC pill causing my bladder infections. The only time I’ve thrown up was due to being drunk and once during my first pregnancy. My Sis was the same as you with the flu shot – her doc kept pushing her to take it and she also promptly got the flu – never again!

  8. “Conference addresses call to ‘liberate’ children for ‘sex work’–Activist told to ‘create a mass movement on the topic'”
    WND News Services
    Published October 22, 2023 at 6:56pm
By Nancy Flanders, Live Action News

EXCERPT: “Undercover journalist Karlyn Borysenko was present at the recent Socialism 2023 Conference, where she recorded a Q&A session from a talk on The Politics of Childhood. One question from an audience member revealed a desire on the part of the adults present for children to participate in the “sex industry as part of children’s liberation…”

After the panel had spent an hour discussing liberating children from their parents, a self-described sex work activist named Chanel addressed the panel, which included Johns Hopkins University history professor Jules Gill-Peterson, who has previously received a fellowship from the Kinsey Institute (read Live Action’s four-part series on sexologist Alfred Kinsey’s research, which affects child sexual education today, starting here). Chanel asked (emphases added):

‘[W]e’ve been dealing with the child sex panic, you know, the child sex trafficking conspiracy theories since the late 90s. And I had never until this panel been like, huh, what about young people in the sex industry as part of a children’s liberation vision? Like, there’s just like a utopia I had never really thought of before because the world feels so separated and the issue of youth and sex work is so incredibly loaded. I don’t even know if I’d ask this question if it was being live-streamed. You are rolling into a lot of trouble when you start talking about the rights of young people in the sex industry. But young people in the sex industry deserve and need rights, at minimum actually, liberation and justice.’

The audience seems to largely approve of this notion as it applauded Chanel — not for saying children have the right to not be used as sexual objects, but for saying children are not liberated unless they are able to participate in sex work. Child sexual abuse is defined as sexual activity with a child by an adult, adolescent, or older child.

Chanel continued, “So I just was like, I want to hear folks who are thinking about the liberation of children and about movement for the liberation of children and how you understand just like to what extent you’re thinking through. Because when that includes highly marginalized kids on the street, that for sure includes people selling sex, right? That includes people selling sex to survive your foster care systems and on the streets.”

In other words, “the liberation for children” from their parents, in Chanel’s opinion, includes minors “selling sex.”….

  9. EXCERPT: “Titanium dioxide is the most widely used whitening pigment in the world and has been linked to adverse health effects, particularly genotoxicity and intestinal inflammation. It is applied as food coloring and a whitening agent to a wide variety of foods, including chewing gum, cakes, candies, breads and ice cream.

Because of health risks, France banned titanium dioxide as a food additive in 2020. Two years later the European Union also banned titanium dioxide as a food additive.

But in the U.S., titanium dioxide is found all over the grocery shelves. Candy like Skittles, Starbursts, and Jell-O, gum like Trident White peppermint gum and Mentos Freshmint Gum, cake products like Duncan Hines Creamy Vanilla Frosting, and Nabisco Chips Ahoy! cookies are just a few of the myriad food items that contain the additive.

A significant body of research, mostly from rodent models and in vitro studies, has linked titanium dioxide with health risks related to the gut, including intestinal inflammation, alterations to the gut microbiota, and more. It is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Group 2B, as possibly carcinogenic to humans…..”

EXCERPT: “Can artificial intelligence really summon dead relatives back from beyond the grave? A growing number of people are trying to find out, with pioneers such as inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil using artificial intelligence to recreate lost relatives.

Kurzweil’s attempts to ‘bring back’ his father – who died when Kurzweil was 22 – using AI began more than 10 years ago and are chronicled this year in a comic book by Kurzweil’s daughter Amy. Kurzweil created a ‘replicant’ of his father by feeding an artificial intelligence system with his father’s letters, essays and musical compositions.

He now has even more ambitious plans to bring his father back to life using nanotechnology and DNA from his father’s buried bones….”

  11. I just do NOT understand why Israel encourages people to settle these villages soooo close to the Gaza border. From what I’ve read, these kibbitzes start out as military bases while a civil governing structure is created, then turned over to the citizens to become – voila! – towns! It looks to me that the Israeli government is using it’s OWN people as human shields!!!

      1. I did a little research and that is generally how most were started. The government encourages them to settle there and gives them financial assistance; once there are enough settlers, fields have been planted, medical facilities built, etc., etc., the military gradually turns it over and will leave some guards for a short period. Some of those hit no longer had the guards.

  12. went looking for fabric (in my many many bins) to complete the Christmas stocking and I got lost in my UFO bin…LOL (Un-Finished Objects)
I found a patriotic quilt I started umpteen years ago. i completed about half of the squares. now i’m wondering what to do with them. I could definitely finish the top, but my mother-in-law’s church no longer quilts tops. I could send it to a shop –if i can find one– and they would machine quilt it for me i guess…sigh.
I have another one sitting on my sideboard in my craft room…it’s penguins with hats on a white background–very colorful. it’s in the same shape. top is finished, but not quilted. i don’t have the room to hand quilt them here.

    1. Look for another church, maybe one of the bigger ones – pretty much all of the WELS Lutheran churches in NE have quilting groups, then they sell the quilts. That’s why my Mom had so many in her cedar chest – I found 8-10 quilts. A couple were made by her and my Grandma but most still had the sale tag from whichever church she bought it from…there are 5 WELS churches in PA – you could always mail it…

my MIL loved her quilting Wednesdays. the ladies would gather at the church and each week someone would bring lunch and they’d quilt all day. but they were mostly older ladies and one by one as they passed, there weren’t enough left to keep it going…sigh

  13. jenna ellis pleads guilty and accepts a plea deal

    FTA
The slew of recent plea deals in Atlanta District Attorney Fani Willis’ racketeering case signals a growing threat to Trump, who is fighting criminal charges in four separate cases as he runs for president in 2024.

Ellis, 38, pleaded guilty in Fulton County Superior Court to one count of aiding and abetting false statements and writings. The charge related to false claims of voter fraud that were made to members of the Georgia Senate at a hearing in early December 2020.

In a tearful statement before Judge Scott McAfee, Ellis expressed regret for her actions in the wake of Trump’s loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

“As an attorney who is also a Christian, I take my responsibilities as a lawyer very seriously and I endeavor to be a person of sound moral and ethical character in all of my dealings,” Ellis said.

“I believed that challenging the results on behalf of President Trump should be pursued in a just and legal way,” she said, but “I failed to do my due diligence.”

Instead, she said she relied on information that was provided to her by other lawyers “with many more years of experience.”

“If I knew then what I know now, I would have declined to represent Donald Trump in these post-election challenges,” she said.

“I look back on this whole experience with deep remorse.”

Ellis originally faced two felony charges in Willis’ indictment, which accuses Trump and 18 co-defendants of illegally conspiring to overturn Biden’s victory in Georgia’s 2020 contest.

The 98-page, 41-count indictment alleges Ellis urged state legislators in key swing states Biden won to appoint presidential electors who would vote for Trump.

Ellis will avoid prison time as part of her plea agreement. She was sentenced to five years of probation and must pay $5,000 in restitution, in addition to completing 100 hours of community service and penning an apology letter to the people of Georgia.

  14. EXCERPT: “Former President Donald Trump signed up for the New Hampshire presidential primary on Monday, becoming the first person who has served as president to file such paperwork in person more than once.

After signing up for the 2016 contest on the first day of the filing period eight years ago, Trump sent Vice President Mike Pence to file his paperwork for the 2020 contest. That was in keeping with a tradition of other incumbents who also sent surrogates, but his return on Monday was something new. “Vote for Trump and solve your problems,” he wrote on the commemorative poster all the candidates are asked to sign.

Also new was the security surrounding his visit. Only supporters selected by the campaign were allowed to line the hallway to the secretary of state’s office at the Statehouse, and access to the building was restricted….”

    2. MSN: Key Facts

Emmer won 78 of the 210 votes conducted by secret ballot in a private meeting among House Republicans Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

Rep. Mike Johnson (La.) reportedly won 34 votes, followed by Rep. Byron Donalds (Fla.) with 29 votes and Rep. Kevin Hern (Okla.) with 27 votes.

Rep. Pete Sessions (Texas) will be removed from the seven-candidate ballot after reportedly receiving just eight votes, the least of any candidate.

The losing candidate in each round will be kicked off the ballot until one receives the majority votes needed to win the nomination—a process that comes after Republicans’ first two nominees, Reps. Steve Scalise (La.) and Jim Jordan (Ohio), were forced out of the race after failing to net the support needed to win in a formal election conducted with the full House.

Of course this only scratches the surface of how leading Democrats and the media have denied election results in recent past. If DOJ applied equal standards to everyone, most of the Democratic Party and nearly every news reporter would be on trial for Russia collusion hoax
