American Girl

One of my all-time favorite Tom Petty songs is American Girl.  It’s a story about a girl longing to be more than what she was. It was recorded on July 4th 1976 during the Bicentennial and American Girl was the last song performed in concert by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They played it to close out the encore of their performance on September 25, 2017, at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California, the final concert of their 40th Anniversary Tour. Petty died of complications from cardiac arrest after an accidental prescription medication overdose on October 2, just over a week later.

My first real boyfriend was actually a Tom Petty look alike and when he took me to a Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ concert, we were mobbed!  Everyone thought he was THE Tom Petty.  Security finally came to investigate the crowd and we ended up getting to meet Tom.  Nice but brief hello.  It was cool.

American Girl

Well, she was an American girl
Raised on promises
She couldn’t help thinkin’ that there
Was a little more to life
Somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
Yeah, and if she had to die tryin’
She had one little promise
She was gonna keep

Oh yeah, alright
Take it easy baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

Well, it was kind of cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by
Out on 441
Like waves crashin’ on the beach
And for one desperate moment there
He crept back in her memory
God it’s so painful
Something that’s so close
And still so far out of reach

Oh yeah, alright
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

Ooh
Uh-huh-huh
Uh-huh-huh
Oh yeah

Beautiful tribute to what our family has gone through the last 18 months, especially you and Dad! To God indeed be the glory! And you didn’t even mention figuring out paying for Josiah’s WEDDING right at the beginning of the career change! The Lord has been ever present for our family and sometimes seems to shine the brightest in our weakest, darkest, most uncertain moments. God may have unveiled to you the secret to contentment firsthand as He did to the apostle Paul! I have no doubt your post and openness and glorification of the Lord will bring a bit of hope and peace to many-a-reader!

As for Susan’s comment, there’s a lot to unpack there for sure. I think the big question though ultimately revolves around God’s relationship to the suffering in our world. Indeed many people since Job have suffered in horrible, gruesome, or evil ways. Why has human trafficking been so prevalent in our world for so long? Why does female genital mutation exist in cultures still today? Why do certain churches have a serious pedophilia problem? Why do drunk drivers typically survive crashes that were fatal for the other vehicles? Why are most nursing homes abundant in depression and neglect? Why do some people die so young?

The horrors in Detroit that lie just around the corner from the flashy buildings have brought me more up close with the issue of suffering than I ever thought I’d get without personally losing a close loved one or something. I find it hard to encourage someone with anything more than silence, prayer, and a warm embrace if they’re actively going through loss and grief. Anything more I fear would fall on deaf ears and appear trivial. I still don’t fully understand the complex relationship between God’s ultimate power, God’s perfect will, our free will, God’s perfect balance of both justice and mercy, and the enemy’s brief dominion over this world until the time God has established to return. The despair and neglect and poverty I see in Detroit on every shift I work is informative if not life-changing, and intimidating if not crushing.

But God has been spreading His light through people like myself into the areas of brokenness and darkness in Detroit. I must operate in His strength and peace that surpasses all understanding, or I’ll succumb to the anxiety that leers at me from every cracked sidewalk and crooked door. I have to cling to this faith that He is doing good works in this world and in each of us and that He’ll never stop chasing those that can be saved and brought into His Kingdom! I’m sure God will have some majestically complicated yet simplistic answer for why TobyMac’s son died so young and so tragically, if I remember to ask Him when I meet Him face to floor. If I die tomorrow, I already look at my life as a blessing due to the number of times I’ve faced dangerous scenarios and felt God had gifted me second chances at life upon emergence from those scenarios alive. Perhaps many of those around us have had similar second, third, and fourth chances at life we never knew of.

Jeremy Camp is another music artist that has a vigorous body of work on trusting in God through suffering. Jeremy was given the Jesus-loving wife of his dreams (after much anxst and effort to woo and marry her) just for her to die from a health condition months after their marriage. Jeremy is extremely open about that time in his life in his book and at his concerts, where he continually gives glory to God and millions have encountered Jesus through his music and his story. Did his wife HAVE to die for that outcome? Who’s to say? It’s an uncomfortable question philosophically and realistically. And it feels hollow to even venture a guess at one specific reason for the expense of someone’s life.

But knowing that God can and does use any of our circumstances for His glory and our eventual good is a comfort amidst the lack of definite answers. The enemy would have the population of this world be hyper-focused on the suffering and the trials, when in fact God has such beauty waiting in eternity with Him for those that choose to follow Him! And there are more answers in God’s Word than we give Him credit for if we only read and seek Him!

I don’t know if this helps at all, usually my philosophical rants get me more questions, but Susan I appreciate your honesty and I’ll be praying for you in your own current challenges! God bless!

    Furious Love

    1. Here is my husband Michael’s take on what was shared in the post about our family, from an email. I hope this might bless you too!

      Valerie,

What a great and accurate testimony of a difficult road, and how God steered us through each obstacle. Great job!! I don’t fully understand all the paths he puts us on, and his grace and mercy is a mystery in and of itself. But I am nonetheless thankful for all of who he is and does in our lives. May he continue to guide us the on road ahead wherever it may lead us, and whatever the circumstances are that we face.

          1. Yes, but it’s more work than I’m used to compressing into such a short span of time. I don’t know how DP does it!!! I’d probably have a challenge to even be responsible for One post a week like the Q-Tree guys do!

I’m not up to snuff compared to other authors there–like I wear the permanent dunce cap in the room–so I’m aware that there are likely quite a few people who might regularly read at the Q-Tree who would probably prefer Any other author but me…fwiw…

Basically I have to wrestle with my insecurities since I’m pretty much always the dumbest kid in Any room at the Q-Tree. LOL

I kind of think that a lot of the people who became the bulk of the Q-Tree community were the ones who had knock down drag out discussions on the CTH Presidential page before being banned. I didn’t comment there much because a lot of the in the weeds stuff is well outside of my wheelhouse.

It seems like other CTH sister sites like yours, Sylvia’s, Marica’s, & even Stella’s (she’s a founding CTH author from former Honey Trail times & I used to read there regularly too pre-scamdemic) were more likely formed from people that may have been more active on the Open Thread at CTH. It’s just a bit warmer & less cut throat.

So I’m still surprised & honored that Wolf lets me write Anything at his site 🙂

Sorry for the long answer…just being real though so thanks for asking ❤

              1. That’s a Great Way of looking at it!

At the Q-Tree & affiliated blogs I do really believe that there is a community of like-minded & often warm-hearted compatriots. I’ve been an outsider most of my life so being even marginally accepted into the fold is still a rather strange sensation.

I do feel like we are kind of an extended family, or small church, or a worldwide community of fascinating & passionate personalities. Sometimes it makes irl conversations seem So Tame by comparison LOL

We are all so very blessed to get to hang together, rather than hang alone ❤

I’m actually watching my oldest granddaughter tonight while Nathaniel & his wife go to a concert. Then tomorrow early I have to take Josiah for another teeth-pulling dentist appointment. the bucks and the turkeys especially. they don’t like intruders in the woods–so they move where they feel safe and left alone. that would be here around the pond.

Rifle is Nov 15-30 & Muzzle-loader, which my husband has but has never hunted with Yet, is like 10 days in December but I think the dates float so that it Might be the First Full weekend through the Second Full weekend.

My husband’s long-time hunting buddy, Pete, often gets multiple deer each season. He’s a Catholic father of 8 or 9 now I think, so God is always providing for their family’s needs through the dad’s hunting success!

    1. Morning, Pat! The worst of the storms passed us by, thankfully – just a sustained downpour, thunder and lightning, and some wind but not bad at all! I haven’t seen any news about what may have happened elsewhere in the state – the worst of it was to the south. I’ve put the seed feeders back out and GT’s food is on the patio…ooops, and there she is – I glanced over and she is chowing down! 53 here this morning and clear skies. I wasn’t into Tom Petty much but I do remember that song – what a cool memory to have actually met him in person!

        1. Ah, yes….1976…crazy year for me – signed up for the Army in CO in the spring, then headed back to NE that summer to wait for my induction date in November. I was back working on the racetrack, filming races, and living with my co-worker when my ex showed up out of the blue, wanting me to come back to him – I was up in the 60′ tall tower when he showed up at the base of the tower, out of the blue – I have NO clue how he even found me! I decided to give it another try and returned to CO – yeah, that didn’t last long! I was back in NE by October and left Omaha for basic training in November.

The only candidate for Speaker I am currently supporting is President Donald J. Trump.

He will end the war in Ukraine.

      He will secure the border.

He will end the politically weaponized government.

He will make America energy independent again.

He will pass my bill to stop transgender surgeries on kids and keep men out of women’s sports.

He will support our military and police.

      And so much more!

He has a proven 4 year record as President of the United States of America.

He received a record number of Republican votes of any Republican Presidential candidate!

We can make him Speaker and then elect him President!

He will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!! 🇺🇸

This article shows Matt Gaetz’s thinking (boldface mine).

    https://12ft.io/proxy?ref=&q=https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/house/gaetz-claps-back-mccarthy-conservative

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) said he “absolutely” has and will never have any regret over spearheading the ousting of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

Following the historic 216-210 vote to toss him from the speaker’s chair, McCarthy addressed the media, specifically calling out Gaetz for not being a conservative.

“When he says we’re not conservative because we didn’t vote to secure the border, I think that does merit a response,” Gaetz said. “We passed a Department of Homeland Security border bill that would have required E-Verify with a host of other reforms. Then, on a continuing resolution, Kevin McCarthy wanted us to surrender every other fight — Jack Smith, weaponized government, everything else going on — just to isolate the border thing.”

“Now, I don’t believe that the way conservatives get ahead is surrendering everything but the border in order to address the border,” he continued. “What Kevin McCarthy believes about governing is that we have to utilize continuing resolutions and if the continuing resolution is conservative enough, if you hang some bells and whistles on it, that that really ought to pacify people who are right-leaning throughout the country. I believe that the only way to achieve programmatic reform and put downward pressure on spending is to do what was done back in the 1990s, where every individual bill is conferenced and debated and subject to amendment.”

Gaetz acknowledged the need to compromise and work across the political aisle, pointing to how he voted for four appropriations bills last week that largely left out his proposed amendments. He also pushed back at notions that he is fundraising off his role in the ousting of McCarthy.

“I am the only Republican in the entire United States Congress who takes no lobbyist money and no PAC money,” Gaetz said. “So, absolutely, I communicate daily, vigorously with regular Americans because the only way I’m able to advance my political goals is if just regular folks give me $10, $20, $30.”

“I will take no lecture from the likes of people who do three lobbyist fundraisers a day and trade favors in order to get cash from special interests on how I raise money,” he added. “And I take deep offense to anyone who wants to criticize the mailman, the active-duty service member, the grandmother who believes in me and goes to MattGaetz.com to donate. As a matter of fact, I hope they do that right now, and I’m not sorry for it at all because I won’t take the lobbyist and PAC money like every other person does.”

In 2020, Gaetz announced that he would ditch campaign contributions from federal political action committees, a position that has often been reported of Democratic candidates.

The Florida Republican also pushed aside any speculation that he is hoping to capitalize on this moment in history as a means to seek higher office…

Now that it has been agreed in Court that Mar-a-Lago is WORTH 50 to 100 times the Value the Racist & Incompetent Attorney General of New York State, Letitia “Peekaboo” James, ascribed to it (18 Million Dollars), & likewise other assets that were valued crazily low by this “Monster” that has allowed Violent Crime in New York to reach EPIDEMIC levels, and dangerous illegal migrants to roam free all over our State, we hope the Judge will TERMINATE his first ruling of fraud in that he was given false and ridiculous information by the Trump Deranged Lunatic, A.G. James. In actuality, I am WORTH FAR MORE than the numbers put down on the Financial Statements, not less. In addition, there is a far reaching and professionally drawn Disclaimer Clause boldly stated on the FIRST PAGE OF THE DOCUMENT. This entire case should be thrown out and dismissed. The A.G. should be reprimanded and sanctioned for bringing this case with its FAKE LOW VALUES, in order to make me look bad. Election Interference!

Judge Engoron has been given false and grossly misleading information about my Net Worth by a lying and incompetent Attorney General, such as Mar-a-Lago being worth $18,000,000 when in fact the number would be much closer to 1.5 Billion Dollars, like other properties, including two that were recently sold for numbers many times those that were listed in the Financial Statements. The N.Y.S. Attorney General, therefore, committed FRAUD for Political and Election Interference reasons. This case should therefore be dismissed!

  6. “McCarthy: A Loss for the GOP, A Win for Republicans”
    TOM RENZ
    OCT 4, 2023

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Yesterday in a virtually unprecedented move Kevin McCarthy was removed as speaker of the House. A small handful of GOP reps that actually care about the Republican base determined that McCarthy’s war on America first and Republican ideals had gone so far that they were willing to risk the wrath of party leadership to say enough. While the GOP is still a disaster at best, this is one of the best signs of hope our republic has seen in recent years.

So why was KM removed from his role and what does it mean? There were many reasons but let’s start with the promises he broke that allowed him to become speaker:

    — To role back IRS funding – NO ONE wants 87,000 new IRS agents to harass low and middle class Americans (they will not affect the billionaire class). McCarthy has failed to do anything about this despite having perfect opportunities to do so in the debt ceiling negotiations and the temporary funding bill he just pushed through for the democrats.

    — Removing some Dems from some Committees – he did some of this but not enough. Frankly his actions here were weak in my opinion. On a related note he has done nothing to fix the damage from the J6 Committee.

    — Investigate/Impeach Mayorkas for the Southern Border Calamity: We have had a bunch of meaningless investigations led by people you can count on to dodge real issues and do nothing but talk about their findings (COVID committee anyone?). That said we have more than enough info for impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas, Garland, Biden, and others yet we have barely been able to get an inquiry moving against the Big Guy himself.

    — Create a Select Committee on China: this was about dealing with the Chinese war on America. We the people are tired of military aged Chinese men streaming through the souther border, the absurd trade imbalances, the massive level of espionage, and the Chinese influence over most of our elected officials. What real changes have you seen to any this since KM took the speaker seat?

    — Ending Proxy Voting: Congrats – he did this.

    — To push bills focused on “culture issues” – McCarthy had plenty of opportunity to end the trans/sexualization of our kids that is occurring in the schools and doing so would have been popular across the board. He could have also protected our military from being an absurd experiment in wokism. All he had to do was to negotiate it as part of the debt ceiling or funding resolutions. He didn’t nor would he take any real actions in the future.

Ultimately McCarthy has acted almost exactly like McConnell but has the disadvantage of having several House members that actually have spines (compare this to the Senate). That may seem like a strong statement but nearly 80 million people went out and voted for Trump and his America first agenda last election so taking a stand on these issues that are so dear to so many should not be difficult, rather, it simply requires the courage to not sell out. Further, remember that according to the GOP party platform Trump is still the man and these guys are supposed to be supporting his agenda… not undermining him at every turn.

What this will mean is yet to be determined. The patriots in the House now have a real fight on their hands to ensure the new Speaker is not a sellout (good luck finding one). That said, these guys have now shown that they will actually stand for what they were elected to do so nothing is impossible. Ultimately it will come down to whether the rest of the GOP is willing to sell out to the Democrats to elect a RINO or whether they will stand with their base.

If the GOP were to elect a new Speaker over the objections of the patriots it would destroy the party and I would likely begin work with everyone I could find to look into the possibility of starting/supporting a viable third party. People like me would begin a push to defund all GOP related activities and we would be forced to recognize that the GOP is actually an enemy of the base.

Despite the massive disruption this is causing, I view this entire thing as good. I’d rather know my enemies than have to look over my shoulder and they are becoming clear. The Republicans – the people and the base – support America first policies, freedom for all, and positive economic policy for OUR country. The GOP has sold out to one-world-government and Anti-American globalists (not to mention the CCP). This move was a big win for anyone that likes America and for the Republican voters… even if or perhaps especially in light of the fact that it was a disaster for the sell-outs running the party.

Thank you Matt Gaetz and you other America first Republicans that stood for we the people.”

For the uninitiated I hope folks will pay attention to the following. But it is up to you. Gaetz opened Pandora’s Box for you to look inside.

The pork is made via insider trading within the halls of Congress. McCarthy is and has always been an insider trader along with all of the past Speakers including traitor Newt during my lifetime. Newt and Slick made deals together as an example – that should explain reality. That is the approach of the vast majority of our elected officials over many years. That is how they generally arrive with modest financial holdings and leave very wealthy. Lobbyists and unwitting citizens give their money to political committees, parties, fund raisers, PACs, foundations and whatevers. The insider traders continue trading on the insider (first to know) information they receive in the markets, real estate, business opportunities, etc, They let their cronies know in advance as well. It’s one big circle—-.

They could care less what you think because the alphabets are in collusion with them. They are the brown shirt enforcers who also benefit personally. If you are in with them and go too far, there is a civil settlement method where you can buy your way out of trouble. The money goes into the pockets of the prosecuting side, who are appointed into power by…politicians and their cronies.

There is no “us” versus “them” in Congress in the traditional political party sense. There is a very small group of outliers who are patriots with integrity. Some even infiltrate the inner circles of the Uniparty as you have seen play out.

I gave everybody an industry specific story and other stories of it in BIMD. Each “side” knows the goals and objectives of the other over which they negotiate, compromise with and support. They are mafioso – a family. They are granted legislative “wins” for appearances to placate the voters in their districts so they can be reelected (justify their appointment) and continue the graft and corruption. Ever notice that nothing of substantiative value ever gets enacted that has lasting value to you and America in general?

They carry this methodology out worldwide and hide behind the purported might of our now woke military. Our ability to gin up the energy sector with related petro dollar underpinnings quickly kept aligned nations and economies under control.

Which is why they hate BRICS and continue to lie and try to undercut Putin. If it takes the blood of 10 million normies, Jazis and mercenaries…oh well. The petro dollar is on its deathbed if they cannot pull off a stalemate.

The word “bipartisan” is equal to the word “treason” for most legislative actions. If your elected (appointed) officials desire to compromise on anything essential to our survival or MAGA, you know they are on the wrong side and are in league with the criminals. It is a flashing red self identifier.

They depend upon you remaining asleep or uncaring about what they do and how they do it. They use the media, entertainment, sports, public schools/universities, church pulpits, whatever to keep the scam going.

Collective non-compliance by the citizenry is their greatest fear. Which is what some of us specialize in here.

The implications all of it has for PDT’s various alignments and actions as POTUS and afterwards is a subject I will leave up to the readers to determine.

      1. FJB, My Mother made most of our clothing when we were growing up. On our 21st Birthdays she gave us each a quilt the squares of which she cut from the leftovers from our favorite clothes she made for us. This was also a great surprise! A real treasure!

“Nation Votes To Vacate All 535 Seats Of Congress”
    POLITICS · Oct 4, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

U.S. — After discovering that vacating Congressional positions is an actual option, Americans have overwhelmingly voted to vacate all 535 seats of Congress.

“It’s a good start,” said Virginian Tom Rowland. “We should have done this a long, long time ago.”

After the position of House Speaker was simply vacated without any plan for a replacement, a struggling nation realized the American Dream was suddenly back within its grasp. “I always thought if we removed one lizard person, we were stuck replacing them with another one. What was even the point?” said Georgia woman Karen Livingston. “But–to rid ourselves of all of Congress, and simply not replace them? I had no idea this was possible. It brings tears to my eyes…America might just have a chance after all.”

The vote was held hours after McCarthy’s ouster, with all 535 seats in Congress being vacated with a final vote tally of 350 million to 535. “For decades, voting was like cutting one head off of Hydra, just to watch two more grow back,” said Maryland resident John Denton, beaming as he watched Congressmen clean out their offices. “Think, with just a few months of an empty Capitol — why there might be a Republic left when my children grow up.”

At publishing time, America had voted to also vacate the rest of the federal government except for the National Park Service.”

      1. Those commands are coming from Congress. It should be up to the States. If 2 States share it, if they can’t come to an agreement, split it into 2 State parks at the border – simple! The “national government” shouldn’t OWN anything!!!!

  12. “Taylor Swift Traded To The Jets”
    SPORTS · Oct 3, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — In a traumatic upset for the sporting world, Taylor Swift has been traded from the Kansas City Chiefs to the New York Jets, where she will begin dating tight end Tyler Conklin.

“We had to trade three starting players for Swift but I think it will be worth it in the end,” said GM Joe Douglas. “Maybe now everyone will start coming to our games.”

Taylor Swift is reportedly eager to get started with the team. “I’m happy to be back in New York, or at least New York adjacent. I didn’t realize they played in Jersey, which is a bit of a turnoff. But anything is better than Missouri. Like, ew.”

KC Chiefs’ Travis Kelce has reportedly slipped into depression after realizing his relationship with Swift had been used to elevate the status of his team. “This is devastating for me,” he said. “On the plus side, my Insta followers are through the roof and my jersey sales have never been better. I guess it’s not all bad.”

“But come on! The JETS? REALLY?!” he added.

The rest of the Jets’ roster is reportedly hopeful this will pave the way for each of them to date their own pop singer, but positions are limited. “None of us want to end up with Lizzo,” noted QB Zach Wilson.

At publishing time, the NY Jets had already become the most popular team in the NFL thanks to Swift’s influence. Kelce confirmed he is now open to dating any other billionaire pop stars who may be available.”

Spineless Kevin McCarthy never expelled Nasty from her plush speakers office.
In a few hours of being temporary speaker, Patrick McHenry expelled her and said she needed to be out by tomorrow.
He did this while she was at Di Frankenstein’s funeral in San Fransicko.
Now that is how you treat the Demicoms.

Hunter shaved his head – (and probably his whole body) to subvert the drug testing protocol. The judge should take note of this as a violation of probation.

Remember to spread far and wide in comments, especially on mainstream outlets, that the appointment of a CA senator from Maryland is exemplary of Democratic/left’s lax view of residency requirements. If they don’t care about the residency of a senate appt, they certainly won’t care about it as a requirement for the average voter. This deeply impacts voter registration and makes it ripe for abuse, which is the heart of voter fraud. CA allows conditional voting the day of the election. You just claim you moved to that county or can’t get to your home registered county and you get to vote. It is conditional, as someone is supposed to check on it, but how do we know this is happening? remember, CA does not require IDs to vote, either. So residency is seen as in flux and the default is to allow the voter to vote no matter what they say. Ripe for fraud and abuse. Don’t allow this to happen in your state and county, either. It’s the open door for fraud.

  16. FFS! the first act of the new speaker is to send erbody home for a week so they can cry about mccarthy being ousted? FTA
Gaetz then trained his sights on McHenry:

I do have to offer some pretty sharp criticism of the new pro tem of the House, Patrick McHenry. We met tonight and he sent us home until Tuesday of next week, Eric. We should be here tomorrow working to elect a new speaker, getting onto our appropriations bills, and engaging in a negotiation with the Senate to get the government funded.

But instead, whoa, these people have gotta go home and cry for a week? They’ve gotta go do a week of handwringing and bedwetting over the fact that Kevin McCarthy isn’t speaker anymore? This institution is about more than one man. It’s about the job. How about we pass a budget?

So, McHenry has the power of the speakership now. And literally, his first act as the acting speaker of the House was to send everyone home ’til Tuesday. That’s moving in the wrong direction. We’ve gotta get a new speaker and we’ve gotta get leadership to understand a sense of urgency that your viewers and the American people all feel.
