Marigolds

Nature 3 Minutes

Marigolds (Tagetes spp.) are among the most common and reliable of all bedding flowers. These cheerful flowers with warm colors and fern-like foliage are true annuals, completing their life cycles in a single growing season. The size and construction of the blooms can vary considerably, from tiny single-petal flowers of the signet marigolds to the large 4-inch double-petal blossoms of the African marigolds, but all show their membership in the aster family with flowers demonstrating the characteristic daisy-like appearance. Marigolds are typically planted from nursery starts or seeds planted in the spring after the soil can be worked. These fast-growing plants will achieve blooming maturity within a matter of a few months when planted from seeds. For earlier outdoor blooms, start the seeds indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost.

Marigold Care

Marigolds are very low-maintenance once established, and they are notably pest-free. In fact, they are sometimes planted as a deterrent to pests that attack other plants. Marigolds can bloom almost non-stop and will keep going all summer, until frost. To achieve that non-stop flowering, keep your marigolds deadheaded. Flowering may decrease slightly during the heat of summer but generally resumes in full force as cooler weather arrives.

Tall varieties of African marigold are sometimes planted by stripping off the lower leaves and burying the stems extra deep. This encourages an extra sturdy root system and minimizes the need for staking the plants.

Light

For the most flowers and the healthiest plants, plant your marigolds in full sun. Shady conditions will cause the plants to become leggy and to flower less profusely.

Soil

Marigolds are not fussy. Any good garden soil (and a little water during dry spells) should keep them happy, as long as the soil is not too acidic. Keep the soil pH roughly neutral, from 6.0 to 7.0. They also don’t need a soil that is particularly rich in organic matter and seem to grow better in a leaner soil.

Water

When you first plant your marigold seeds or plants, make sure they get regular water. Don’t leave them in dry soil for more than a couple of days. If it is particularly hot and sunny, water new plants every day. Once they have had a few weeks to establish a good root system, they will be more drought-tolerant, but they will still bloom best if given weekly water.

Temperature and Humidity

Marigolds are heat-loving plants that thrive in summers throughout their growing range, zones 2 to 11. These true annuals may become a bit subdued during the height of summer, especially in areas with hot summers, but the flowering picks up again when the weather cools in later summer and fall.

Marigolds tolerate a wide range of humidity levels, but they may get powdery mildew in damp or humid summers. Planting in full sun and providing room for airflow will lessen this problem. These native plants of Mexico prefer relatively dry air.

Fertilizer

Your marigolds won’t need any supplemental fertilizer unless your soil is extremely poor. The best thing you can do to keep them in flower is to deadhead regularly.

Types of Marigolds

There are several species and divisions of marigold, with many cultivars of each. Most are moderate in height, but there is a good amount of variety among the different types. You can find short bedding marigolds that grow only 4 to 6 inches tall and taller varieties that can reach 48 inches and make nice cutting flowers. The three most commonly grown types are African, French, and signet marigolds, representing three different Tagetes species:

African marigolds (Tagetes erecta): With large, pom-pom flowers on medium-sized to tall plants, African marigolds (also known as Mexican marigolds) are popular for both the border and as cut flowers. They can grow up to 4 feet tall and have flowers more than 4 inches across. Colors include yellow and orange. ‘Antigua’ Series are African marigolds with unusually profuse blooms.

French marigolds (Tagetes patula); French marigolds are prized for their long, prolific blooms. They tend to be short, bushy plants, from 5 to 18 inches tall. They have purple-tinged stems with double flower heads in yellow, orange, and mahogany that are about 2 inches across. ‘Naughty Marietta’ is a ruffled, deep-yellow French marigold with maroon splashes in the center.

Signet marigolds (Tagetes tenuifolia): The edible marigolds are the signets. They look totally different from bedding marigolds, with lacy leaves and small, single, daisy-like flowers. They come in yellow and orange, with fitting cultivar names such as ‘Orange Gem,’ ‘Tangerine Gem’, ‘Red Gem’, and ‘Lemon Gem’. ‘Gem’ Series are single-flowered signets with very fern-like foliage. There have been some hybrids on the market recently with an expanded palette of colors, such as shades of cream, burgundy, and bi-colors, but the flavor is not always equal to that of the ‘Gem’ varieties.

There are also hybrid crosses between T. erecta x T. patula that combine the large flowers of the African marigolds with the more compact stature of the French marigolds.

    Anthony Fauci and Bill Gates were two of the main criminals in this global fraud of wrongful advertising and mass negligent homicide perpetrated upon billions of innocent people around the world. Everyone involved must be punished for their deliberate crimes against humanity. We must get justice in order for this to never happen again. They must be made an example of what happens to you when you deliberately break the law.

    This was not a mistake, this was a deliberate orchestrated plan to deceive you and manipulate you into taking a toxic experimental injection that was never given to humans before. Millions are injured and millions are dead. This is a global crime that must not go unpunished. Justice must be met, no matter what.

    “As McCarthy stated in both interviews, he believes his job is not to represent Republicans, but rather as House Speaker he is to represent the interests of all Americans, including communists.”

    Communists are on record saying that they will destroy America. That is their mission, i.e., interest.

            you said basically you can train these animals to do lots of things–so he was trained specifically to this music? or is the music for the trainers benefit?
            how long would it take to train a horse for something like this?
            and does the breed make it more or less trainable for something like this?

            1. Yes, those are his “handlers” and this is something he has probably been doing for years. Arabs are somewhat uniquely qualified in that they are very proud horses and performers at heart. He knows they are pleased by the sound of the clapping and that just spurs him on. The high head carriage is one unique quality about Arabs, as is their playful nature; when you watch them out in a pasture, when they get in the mood for “zoomies,” they can almost seem to be dancing. The flags are more or less a toy and a signal to them – I used to go out in the pasture with one of Gage’s battery-operated toy trucks and Z loved chasing it yet he never stepped on it – it, did, indeed look almost like dancing! The oh-so-smooth lead changes are also customary, altho the quality of the whole package also depends somewhat on the breeding line.

  20. I’m happy for @realmarica that this sad time is at an end – now they have to find some way back to “normality,” whatever that means these days!

    Another chilly morning here, headed for the 90’s again, I expect. But that will change dramatically this week-end. I propped open the door and put GT’s food out – nowhere in sight – and left the inside door open. A few minutes later, I noticed the sunrise and went out to snap a pic or two. GT was curled up outside and got up, stretched and yawned (all classic symptoms of head games – act unconcerned) and I greeted her and went on out to take the pic. Still outside when I turned to come back and noticed all the birds in the cottonwood tree. I had heard them when I came outside but was focused on the sunrise. Blackbirds congregating in the tree – this happens a lot – all the chirping going on and then, suddenly, the whole danged flock just takes off in a stream of birds! After I had finished and came back inside, I saw her at the dish eating. No craning her neck to look inside today, tho – she ate and left promptly.

      1. IKR? All blackbirds, too! IDK why they choose that tree – there are others nearby that are taller. Maybe because most of the leaves are gone already but it happened before this summer, more than once – I remember mentioning it. Hearing them all take off at the same time is startling if you’re not prepared for it. And the chirps just stop dead, like a conductor dropped the baton!

  31. Well, I just got the last ripe cantalope cut up and in the fridge – had to throw far too much away because it was over-ripe. I’m keeping a very close eye on the one that is almost there…then the wait for the other 5-6 new ones – considering the cold weather coming, I doubt they will get much bigger. I’ve also got seeds spread out on paper towels on a cookie sheet drying. Just the seeds from one melon are more than enough! Now to tackle the watermelon Michael brought yesterday….I expect I’ll be taking half of that to Lois/Oran – he picked a smaller one, allegedly, but it’s still huge! IDK if it’s seedless or not….hmmm….if not, maybe I’ll try saving some seeds from that and try one or two vines next year with the lopes…oh, wait, I think I know an even better spot if I can get it tilled – on the south side of my shed – if they can take sun all day. Have to check into that since I’ve never tried watermelons before.

    and others who extracted concessions in exchange for giving McCarthy the votes to become House Speaker.

    One of those promises was passing twelve appropriations bills for a budget again.

    Another promise was giving Members at least 72 hours to read legislation.

    Both of those promises were not upheld this weekend.

    This ignores other promises that were ignored throughout the months McCarthy has been Speaker.

    So, McCarthy broke his end of the bargain in the agreement.

    Gaetz is now exercising the mechanism that he can to hold McCarthy accountable for breaking his bargain.

    How is Gaetz the bad guy in that situation?

  36. Ya’ know….this is the height of “unbright,” as Harris Faulkner claimed about the idiot Bowman, who pulled the fire alarm. She is going on about “well, how did he usually get into the building? Isn’t that something he would know, does he take the tunnel?” Woman, even WE know that door was usually open during the week and was closed for the week-end!!! WHY do these people do this??!!??

      It has come time for me to tell this story.

      When I was running for US Congress in 2022, I was one of the only candidates running who took the pledge to not support @SpeakerMcCarthy
      for Speaker of the House.

      When I ran in FL 11, I ran against RINO incumbent @RepWebster
      Daniel Webster, who skipped the vote on the 2nd impeachment of President Trump and was the only Republican to skip the vote on the J6 committee, and also voted to send $40 billion to Ukraine. In 2021, @mattgaetz
      cornered me at the Trump Doral in Miami and told me he thinks I should drop out. He told me “you are not a winning candidate and you are not an America First candidate”.

      But Daniel Webster is? Matt protected a RINO Trump hater who voted all 15 times to make Kevin McCarthy speaker of the House. Matt worked against me when I ran against a McCarthy supporter when he could have had someone like me in Congress fighting for America First. If Matt was serious when he first said a couple years ago that he wouldn’t allow McCarthy to be Speaker, then he would have shown us with his actions. But every chance he gets, he allows his ego and hubris to get in the way of supporting America First candidates who walk the walk and talk the talk.

      I have all the receipts to prove what I’m saying too.

      So it’s funny to now see Matt Gaetz make more promises to vacate the chair when he has had many opportunities to fight McCarthy over the last 2 years, but has intentionally sabotaged efforts to hold McCarthy accountable. Even worse, he constantly runs cover for the biggest McCarthy enabler in Congress, aka @mtgreenee
      who once also lied and said she would never support McCarthy.

      I have those text messages too… I have no reason to lie.

      It’s important for people to understand how fake Matt is. I support a Motion to Vacate, and if I was in Congress, unlike Matt, I never would have caved and supported McCarthy, and I would have actually made a motion to vacate the chair the first time I said I would as opposed to lying about it.

      It is hard to take Matt seriously anymore when I know how hard he worked during my campaign to oppose a viable McCarthy opponent and to support the McCarthy enabler, and career politician RINO Daniel Webster.

      Daniel Webster was with @RonDeSantis
      on election night in 2022. He made a deal with DeSantis in 2022 to remove the most pro Trump areas of my district in the map and to give Daniel Webster back Orange County, where the highway is named after him. And it was in Orange County where my election was stolen with massive fraud on election night.

      The only reason Daniel Webster recently endorsed @realDonaldTrump
      is because he knows how much Trump likes me and he’s worried I will be running again.

      Webster hates Donald Trump and everyone in FL 11 knows it. Matt Gaetz protected Webster and told me “Webster gave me my first job in politics and my dad is friends with him, so you need to drop out.”

      I refused to drop out and so Matt told me “you are not an America First candidate and you are not a winning candidate.” Also when I was running for Congress, DeSantis asked Matt Gaetz to tell the grassroots to stop asking DeSantis to conduct an Audit over 2020. And Matt happily obliged and told Election Integrity activists to stop calling Desantis out over election integrity.

      I wanted to give @mattgaetz
      the benefit of the doubt, but he has shown time and time again that he’s just not very serious about holding @SpeakerMcCarthy
      accountable.

      That’s the real Matt Gaetz for you. I thought you all should know the truth since nobody in Washington DC seems capable of speaking it these days.

      But the trust fund wealth has gone to groups that not only share Preston’s values but have protested and amplified the city leader’s efforts to remake the criminal justice system. The Arch Community Fund has donated $110,000 to the “Anti Police Terror Project,” a group that seeks “to radically transform — and eventually abolish — police and policing.” APTP has mobilized rallies to demand cuts to police funding in the Bay Area, despite surging crime.

      Preston also leans on the group for support. He has appeared at rallies against the San Francisco Police Department organized by APTP and last month, he appeared on APTP founder Cat Brook’s program on KPFA radio. His financial support to her group was not disclosed during the interview.

      Other recipients of Preston’s family trust work to support his political agenda. Critical Resistance, a group that similarly seeks to “abolish policing,” has written letters and organized rallies in support of Dean’s agenda in San Francisco. The group received two grants from the Arch Community Fund, totaling $55,000.

      In 2022, in response to a wave of robberies, a number of private businesses offered the San Francisco Police Department access to live monitoring of security cameras. Preston fought to maintain a ban on this effort. Several activist groups that backed Preston on the push to prevent police access to the cameras, including Chinese for Affirmative Action, the National Lawyers Guild, and Asian Americans Advancing Justice, were also recipients of money from Preston’s foundation.

      Preston also donates to groups around the country seeking to dismantle police departments. The Arch Community Fund last year gave $25,000 to Equity and Transformation, an activist group based in Chicago, which works to “defund the police.” Over the years, Preston’s Arch Community Fund has donated $40,000 to “Freedom to Thrive,” a Portland, Oregon activist group that states its goals as “abolishing prisons, police forces, military forces, immigration enforcement, border patrol.”

      The anti-police movement has had perhaps the most devastating impact there. Portland was once one of the safest urban centers in the country, averaging close to twenty homicides a year. After anti-police protests rocked the city in 2020 and activists won cuts to the Portland Police Department, including the abolition of the city’s gun violence task force. Following activist victories, the murder rate skyrocketed by a factor of five to over 100 a year.

      Community Movement Builders, an Atlanta group that is focused on the “demand not only to de-fund and eventually abolish the police force,” but the elimination of “all policing institutions in the United States,” has waged a conspiracy-driven campaign against a police and firefighter training center in Georgia. Community Movement Builders appears to be a favorite among trust fund liberals. In August, Fergie Chambers, the heir to the billionaire Cox media fortune, pledged $300,000 to the group. Last year, Preston’s Arch Community Fund gave $20,000.

      Preston grew up in the Greenwich Village area of New York City, the fortunate son of a family that made its money selling medical supplies. He went to Bowdoin College, a private school the Preston family supported financially. The “Preston Public Interest Career Fund” is a fellowship made possible by a “generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Preston,” Preston’s parents, according to the university website.

      After college, Preston made his way to San Francisco, marrying into a family that owns several rental apartment buildings. In 2017, along with his brother Alan Preston, “an experienced DEI trainer and facilitator” living in Seattle, Dean Preston founded the Arch Community Fund. The family seeded the fund with millions of dollars worth of corporate stock from Microsoft, Starbucks, Intel, Pfizer, and Eli Lilly, among other blue chip investments, a move that allows the charitable family fund to reap capital gains without paying any tax.”

It was very good but one of those ostensibly seedless melons (that aren’t really seedless – they are just smaller, lighter in color, and infertile). It was good but nothing like the dark green melons I always had as a kid…I think they were called Black Diamond or something like that and they were huge. I did a bit of research and if I do give watermelons a try, I think I’ll go with one like the Sugar Baby, which doesn’t take 90 days to mature – only about 70 – and they take less room. They are also that nice dark green color and smaller….
