Kea brought this adorable little bird to my attention last month and I wanted to share this article I found about them. It’s written by “Kelly” at Tail and Fur.
Zebra Finches are a popular bird found all over the Australian continent, except for the cool, moist south and the tropical far north. Aside from Central Australia, these attractive birds are native to Indonesia and East Timor. They are mainly grass seed eaters. And because they are soothing singers, they are fun to have in your home too.
If you are interested in different bird species and beautiful birds always attract your attention, then go through this article. Many interesting facts about these beautiful Zebra Finches are waiting for you. Go through them all, and you may end up bringing a pair home too.
Most Interesting Facts About Zebra Finches
For more than a century, these birds have been among the most popular caged birds across many countries. They are mainly grass seed eaters, but what else do we know about them? Here are 25 interesting facts about Zebra Finches:
They have stripes like zebras.
You may wonder why a bird is named “zebra.” There is obviously a reason for that. The small chest of this cute bird features black and white stripes like zebras. Its barred tail is often colored black and white too.
As with other birds in the animal kingdom, the males also feature a burst of colors. Often, you will find them in a mix of brown, white, black, gray, and orange. The females, on the other hand, are uniformly gray.
Males and females have different beak colors.
Adult males have brightly colored crimson-red beaks. In comparison, you will notice that female Zebra Finches have lighter-shaded, more muted orange beaks.
They are the fastest maturing birds in the world.
Oh! This tiny bird has one big record against its name. They are the fastest maturing bird. They are able to breed from the age of only 70 to 80 days. After the breeding season, a baby bird will have grown and is ready to leave the nest in just about two months.
They are wonderful pets.
Zebra Finches are great company to the human beings and should be kept in pairs. They are well known for their cool temperament and often make such a good connection with their human host that they eat food directly from their master’s hand.

They are monogamous.
Finches are monogamous breeding pairs, which means they stay with one partner for their lifetime. They generally breed after ample rainfall, as there is abundance of water and food available afterward. Adult birds aged 70 to 80 days are ready to breed.
They dance wonderfully.
Before the mating and breeding season, you will find male birds dancing on the branches of trees to impress the female finches. They push their plumage outward to make their dance even more attractive.
They are small and tiny appearance.
Zebra Finches are one of the tiniest Finch species, but they are not the smallest. They only grow up to four inches long. Males and females are practically the same size, but you can easily distinguish them by looking at the color of their beaks.
They have a long lifespan.
These attractive birds can live around five to seven years when they are free and out in the wild. However, a captive Zebra finch will live longer, often surviving up to 10 to 15 years.
To increase their survival rate and prolong their life, you will want to give your Zebra Finch a companion. This way, you can be sure they remain emotionally and mentally stable.

Both the male and female birds can sing.
Like other birds in the Finch species, these birds are singers too. All male birds sing differently, having their own song features that distinguish them from the rest.
Adult males sing to impress a potential mate so that they can continue their line. Pay attention to males, and you’ll notice that they are the ones that tend to be loud and noisy. While the female finches can sing, they are bad singers.
They live together.
In the wild, big flocks of Zebra finch birds stay together. They enjoy plenty of social interactions so that they can be happy and healthy. Even a male and his female only separate when they have eggs in their nest.
While they like their human companions, they prefer spending most of their time interacting with fellow birds. They also don’t enjoy being held, which can frighten and stress them out. As such, do your best to touch them as little as possible.
Their beaks change colors as they mature.
The young birds have black beaks, which change into bright red or orange after one month. Before they mature, all male Zebra finches look like the females, save for their black beaks.
They are protective.
When they breed and have eggs in their nest, the male Finches become very protective. The males also produce a hissing noise to let others know they are ready to protect their mates and their territory.
They are untidy while eating.
Though they are very beautiful to look at, they can get very messy when they eat. If you ask us, that’s understandable, as they need to dehusk seeds to get to their food. Even so, you will often find them dropping seeds here and there.
They have a good sense of smell.
Birds are known for their poor smelling capability. However, Zebra Finches are different. Although the brain of Zebra finches has smaller olfactory bulbs compared to other bird species, they actually use their sense of smell to locate and recognize their relatives.

They have a huge contribution to the world of science.
This may be hard to believe, but, yes, this small bird has helped a lot when it comes to understanding how birds behave, how they sing and talk, and how they evolve. They even lent a hand in figuring out how the human brain works.
You will find Zebra Finches used in neurobehavioral studies where the focus is on auditory processing and song development.
Their diet consists mostly of seeds.
Wild Zebra Finches enjoy eating seeds from different plants and a diet with insects. They also regularly eat pine cones, weeds, and even berries. However, when they do, they almost always chew up the fruit only to get to its seed.
Though they love grass seeds, if you are planning to make them your pet, give them a balanced diet of calcium (boiled eggshell) and seeds. It will also help if you put their food on the cage’s floor so that they can still use their foraging skills.
A premium daily diet is especially important during the breeding season. Make sure you supplement their diet with insects, such as water fleas and moths.
They love water.
This bird is a frequent water drinker, so make sure water is always available to them. They also enjoy a good bath once in a while. Hence, leave a couple of small bowls filled with water in their cage.
Because they have a small body, they can get dehydrated really fast. If you pay attention, they can drink up to 28% of their weight in water per day. Dehydrated birds can die if not given water for hours.
Never house them alone.
This bird does not like to live alone, so always house them in pairs even when they breed. If you find an uneven number of birds in the cage, make it even.
When we say pairs, we don’t necessarily mean that you get a male and female Zebra finch. They can both be males or females. However, a male and female pair get along much better than a same-sex pair.
If you decide to keep two Zebra Finches of the same sex, do not put a nest or nests in their cage. This is to avoid fights, as these birds can be territorial.
They require occasional trimming of their nails.
If your pet finch has overgrown nails, bring it to an experienced bird groomer to have them trimmed. If you’re confident enough, you can try cutting them yourself using human nail clippers.
You will know your Zebra Finches need their nails trimmed when their feet don’t touch the ground when they are standing. Overgrown nails could curl around and cause them pain.
They are sociable in nature.
As they are social in nature, they create cacophony while they sing together. And since you’ll be keeping them in pairs, make sure you put them in a big enough cage for flight.

They are a common subject of genetic research.
This bird species is a common subject of genetic research. Also, studies of their brain structures have led to discoveries in song production.
They love to fly.
Finches are flight-loving birds and need a minimum of 20 inches of horizontal space to be accommodated. Putting them in a big enough flight cage allows them to exercise, play, and stay healthy overall.
You can also keep your Zebra Finches entertained by making sure they have plenty of perches on which they can hop. Since they are small birds, you will want to use natural wood or ropes.
They are an adaptive species.
This bird is very adaptive to new surroundings. However, they are mostly found in open areas with grasses and bushes. In fact, they are such an adaptive species that you will find them building their nests in urban cities and commercial establishments.
They learn to sing from their surroundings.
As they are adaptive in nature, they learn singing from nature itself so they are very popular as songbirds. A young male often learns singing by copying the song features of an older male Zebra Finch.
They can learn as many as two complex songs when still in the learning stage. However, they are often only able to produce a single song when they reach full maturity.
They are the second bird genome to be sequenced.
After chicken, Zebra Finches are the second bird species whose genome has been sequenced in the year 2008. Through this, researchers were able to gain insight into the evolutionary processes of birds in general.
For years, scientists all over the world have been interested in learning about this bird species. In particular, they wanted to study its brain function and how it can learn, memorize, and vocalize songs.

Conclusion
Zebra Finches are one of the loveliest creations of Mother Nature, with their serene beauty, soothing singing voice, and composed temperament. For this reason, it is not surprising why they are also among the most popular pet birds across many countries. They also require a minimal time commitment, so newbie bird owners will find them easy to care for.
To keep them happy and healthy, make sure you provide them with a premium daily diet, a water source where they can drink, and collections of water so that they can bathe a couple of times every week.

The Village and surrounding area looks like a war zone – many trees down. However, prayers were answered – no one was injured or died at the Village due to the storm. A few houses were damaged and the Lodge will need a new roof.
I was there with Sally during the storm and its aftermath. She slept through it all, reclined in her wheelchair in the kitchen of her apartment.
The Village has been without power, internet, cell service, etc. – even our water supply was interrupted – because the big machinery that came to clear the many downed trees hit and broke 3 clean water pipes and the big elevated water tank drained completely.
Live Oak, FL, the county seat of Suwannee County, has been completely without power for nearly a week, with power line people from all over the South, working around the clock to restore power and services. This is life in Florida during hurricane season, however, the last hurricane hit to this area was in the late 1800s.
With the help of power linemen and contractors and tree removal experts from all over the Southern States (bless them), power is being gradually restored. Sally’s apartment was restored Monday night.

Morning, Pat! ALL finches are messy, hence, all the seed husks all over my garden bed and driveway. But none of my finches are that pretty – well, except for the occasional Goldfinch that shows up!!! Cool again at 66; partly cloudy and, thankfully, we are heading into some cooler days. Highs only in the 70’s for a few days supposedly. I put GT’s food out but she hasn’t put in an appearance yet.

This is massive. You all need to read this.
I have exclusively confirmed that the FBI identified Ukrainian operatives and Neo Nazis who were at the US Capitol on J6 and even questioned J6ers about these Ukrainian spies during interviews with the FBI.
During their private interview with @AmericaShaman
, the @FBI
asked him how he knew a Ukrainian operative who took a photo with him the day of J6 2021. Chansley didn’t know the guy, and FBI confirmed that the Ukrainian Sergai Dybynyn was a Ukrainian spy who is affiliated with the Nazi Azov Battalion.
This means the US Capitol was penetrated by Ukrainian spies and the US Government and FBI have still not arrested these people or made the public aware of foreign penetration. This is an act of war by Ukraine against the United States, and yet the US Government has sent $200 BILLION to Ukraine in the last 2 years.
The CIA is funding a color revolution in the United States via Ukrainian Nazis and American Nazis who are being recruited by the CIA and FBI to fight overseas in the Azov Battalion and then come back to the US to instigate Nazi political movements in a psyop intended to make right wingers look bad.
The reality is, these people are Democrats and Biden supporters and the FBI has been hiding the fact that Ukrainian operatives penetrated the US Capitol on J6 and they have been hiding the fact that they are working with Ukrainian Nazis to instigate violence to subvert the US Government, including actions to impeach President Trump, instigate violence at Charlottesville which was used as Biden’s reason for running for President against Trump, and to stage violence at the Capitol on J6.
Now the FBI and CIA are using Ukrainian Nazis to instigate racial division in the US during an election year so that Neo Nazi marches pop up in red states when voters are deciding who to vote for ahead of 2024.
This is a CIA funded domestic terror operation intended to interfere in the U.S. Election and to make sure Donald Trump is never allowed to be President ever again.
This is treason. And everyone involved needs to go to prison.
This might be the biggest story I have ever uncovered.

The followup tweet:
Now that I have exposed Ukrainian Nazis working with the CIA and FBI, let me show you how this isn’t a one time thing, and let me show you how our government is working with Ukrainian neo Nazis to instigate conflict in America and recruit for White Supremacist movements both domestically and internationally.
On Jan 6th, 2021, a known Ukraine Neo-Nazi spy was identified in front of the U.S. Capitol, and additionally confirmed to be a Ukrainian spy by the FBI in an interview with January 6th Defendant Jacob Chansley @AmericaShaman
, also known as the Q-Anon Shaman.
I personally spoke to Jacob, and he confirmed to me that the FBI told him during an interview with him and his lawyer that the person he was pictured with at the Capitol on Jan 6th was in fact “a known Ukrainian spy”. The FBI asked Jacob Chansley if he knew the Ukrainian spy. Jacob didn’t know who he was, and said the man approached him and asked for a photo.
The FBI knew of a Ukrianian spy outside of the US Capitol on J6, and yet this was NEVER reported or even mentioned to the J6 Committee. This same Ukrainian spy who was identified by the FBI has been identified via facial recognition technology as Sergai Dybynyn, a neo-nazi who works in Ukraine.
Despite the picture with Jacob Chansley being taken at the front door of the U.S. Capitol, the FBI has never placed Sergai Dybynyn on their January 6th most wanted list, and he has not been arrested over J6 like @AmericaShaman
was. Jacob Chansley was arrested and incarcerated, and yet Sergai Dybynyn, the U.S.-Backed neo-nazi still runs free with the help of the FBI.
Interestingly enough, Sergei Dybynyn was also once photographed with John McCain and @LindseyGrahamSC.
Is our Government using Ukrainian spies and Neo Nazis to instigate political conflict and falsely accuse Trump supporters of being white supremacists?
Let me remind you that there is also documentation of Ukrainian Nazis being present at the Charlottesville March, which @JoeBiden infamously used to launch his 2020 Presidential campaign by using false claims that Donald Trump said Nazis were “very good people”. This lie was used to launch a massive cancel culture campaign aimed at Trump supporters, and it opened the door for the DOJ to accuse Trump supporters of being “white supremacists”.
I believe that I have uncovered something massive, and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time this weekend in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
Our government appears to be using Ukrainian Nazis and American Nazis as confidential informants to recruit more Nazis to fight in the Ukraine-Russia war. And by doing so, they are endangering the lives of American Citizens and compromising our national security.

Turnabout Is Fair Play And Also Both Fun And Essential
Now, you have to understand that these charges have approximately zero legal merit. There are a variety of reasons why. Some are just factually ridiculous. Some fail to apply the facts to the elements of the statutes. In others, the statute is applied in a way it was never meant to be applied. Finally, some of them are simply selective prosecutions. I mean, if you were going to charge Trump for obstruction for moving some boxes around his resort, you’ve got to have a good explanation for why you let Felonia Milhous von Pantsuit skate after taking a hammer and tongs to a bunch of hard drives that were literally under subpoena. And there is no reasonable explanation except that Democrats walk while Republicans get locked up. Which is unacceptable.
But while these legal atrocities are a disgrace and something these prosecutors would be ashamed of if they had any kind of professionalism or honor, this New Rule about how it’s now OK to manufacture charges against political opponents does provide us with an opportunity to jam up a bunch of Democrats. And jam them we must.

“That’s when I noticed that a certain turn of phrase in an opinion sounded oddly familiar even though it was my time reading it. So I turned back to Biden’s article, and there it was. interesting read about an uncovered mystery of the old west
entire article
As they say, the plot thickens.
For years, visitors to a small county museum in Thermopolis, Wyoming, had the opportunity to see an old photograph of Harry Alonzo Longabaugh alongside his ladylove, Ethel “Etta” Place. From an article published by the Wyoming outlet, Cowboy State Daily:
The photo was taken in 1901 in New York by the DeYoung Photography Studio. Some historians have suggested it’s a wedding photo, as the two are rather handsomely dressed. Harry is holding onto a top hat, while Etta has a gold pocket watch pinned to the lapel of her dress, which Harry had just purchased for her at the Tiffany & Co. jewelry store.
You may or may not recognize the photo, and his given name may or may not ring a bell, but you’ve certainly heard of him—he’s the Sundance Kid, a notorious outlaw of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch gang. As it turns out, the photo on display in Thermopolis was an original, just one of five “cabinet cards” purchased by Sundance and Etta, to send to family and friends as a farewell; only days or weeks after this photo was taken, Sundance and Etta, along with Butch, boarded a ship for Argentina to escape the high-profile pursuing Pinkertons.
If you know the story, you know that what really happened to Sundance is still up for debate; some claim he died in a shootout in Bolivia, some think he eventually made his way back to the United States and lived out his life under an alias.
It truly is a fascinating tale, adding to the charm and mystique of the legends of the Old West, but the mystery of Sundance’s last known whereabouts isn’t a new one. However, now that the photograph has been determined to be an original, sights turned to the chain of custody and how it came to be in the possession of the museum; but digging into this history begat an entirely new mystery, leaving us with more questions than before.
Minnie Brown died a “pauper” in 1940, and upon her death, her estate gifted several photographs to the museum, one of which was the Sundance original. Jackie Dorothy, a director of tourism in Thermopolis, has been studying the life of Brown, who is herself, at the heart of an unsolved mystery. Per the article:
Brown had married the town butcher, Mike Brown, in 1907, but in December 1908 she told authorities that she had shot and killed him.
According to the account she gave law enforcement, he’d been abusive and was choking her, so she shot him with one of his own guns.
Because that would have been self-defense, she was never charged with a crime. But investigators noted at the time that none of the details of her account matched the forensic evidence. The bullet couldn’t have been fired from where Brown said she was standing nor was the gun she claimed to have used the one that had killed her husband.
Then, it gets weirder. According to Dorothy’s research:
Brown also had in her possession watches from the infamous Wilcox train robbery. That was the crime that had finally forced Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid to flee the country in the first place [emphasis added].
And weirder still:
On the back of the photo in Brown’s handwriting are the words, ‘This gentleman is one of our real gentlemen who knew how to get the money and not cripple or kill … Taken in New York just before he sailed to never return.’
From Legends of America:
[T]he last known whereabouts of Etta Place were in 1907 when she was still living in San Francisco. Afterward, her location is unknown.
(In 1907, Etta would have been about thirty years old.)
Who was Minnie Brown, really?

“Suicide-machine maker goes ‘non-profit’ to promote 3-D printed product–Victim ‘presses a button,’ loses consciousness and dies”

By WND News Services
Published September 4, 2023 at 7:48pm
EXCERPT: “Philip Nitschke, the assisted suicide activist known as “Dr. Death,” has been approved for a 501(c)3 non-profit called Exit Generation. It is the non-profit spinoff of Exit International, an assisted suicide advocacy group headed by Nitschke, though the non-profit has an even more sinister motive.
On the website announcing its formation, a banner said, “Exit Generation is currently fund-raising towards the first use of the 3D-printed Sarco euthanasia capsule.” Nitschke is notorious for advocating that healthy people be allowed to kill themselves through assisted suicide or euthanasia… which is why he created the “Sarco” machine.
In 2018, Nitschke announced the creation of his Sarco, short for “sarcophagus,” capsule, which kills people with just the click of a button. It can be created using a 3D printer, and comes with a coffin included, to make things even more convenient. “The person who wants to die presses the button and the capsule is filled with nitrogen. He or she will feel a bit dizzy but will then rapidly lose consciousness and die,” Nitschke explained when announcing the machine. Once he has perfected his deadly design, he said he would put the plans online for anyone to access and create themselves….”

“‘Until today, the government had gotten away with it’ — Program to steal books from publishers struck as unconstitutional”
By Bob Unruh, WND
Published September 3, 2023 at 10:28am
ENTIRE ARTICLE: “A government program that was set up years ago but never updated when the laws changed has been found to be stealing books from publishers, and was struck as unconstitutional, according to a report. The decision is from the D.C Circuit Court of Appeals and came in a case handled by the Institute for Justice.
The IJ explains the problem was in a “longstanding federal program” that threatened publishers with huge fines if they published books without providing free copies to the government. The unanimous opinion found that a “mandatory deposit” requirement is in violation of the Takings Clause of the Constitution.
Robert McNamara, a lawyer for IJ, explained, “Today’s ruling affirms the basic principle that the government can’t take your stuff just because you’re doing something useful like publishing books. “But the truly surprising thing is that, for decades, the federal government has pretended it can do exactly that, imposing huge burdens on book publishers. And, until today, the government had gotten away with it.”
The situation involved a demand by the government that anyone who publishes a book containing copyrightable material, which is any new material, must give the government copies. “While the program has largely flown under the radar, it is big business. In fiscal 2021 alone, the government confiscated over $44 million worth of material without paying the publishers a dime,” the IJ said.
It actually is a legacy law that probably should have been changed years ago. The nation’s original copyright system had those who wanted a copyright to trade for it, giving a copy of their work to the federal government in exchange for copyright. But in the 20th century, that changed, so that copyright automatically followed the creation of any new work. The IJ said Congress left the “zombie law” in place even though it was far from its original purpose.
The case at hand started when the Copyright Office told James Jenkins, operator of Valancourt Books, he was subject to “ruinous fines” for failing to provide those copies. He then sued. “The mandatory-deposit system told Americans that the only way to exercise their fundamental right to free speech was to give up their fundamental right to their private property,” said IJ Attorney Jeffrey Redfern. “Today’s victory reaffirms that we get to keep both at the same time.”

Just took this pic of my Rose of Sharon bush – I’m guessing it was false advertising that there would be different colors of blooms on the same bush. My small one has buds on it now, too – it will be interesting to see if they are the same color. Same deal with those Clematis I ordered that claimed to be dark yellow and smelling of coconuts – nope – only the same old/same old pale purple blooms so far. And the white clematis I planted next to the glider has broken off but I expect it will come back next year. That’s what usually happens with them. They appear to have died then, voila! The next spring, here it comes roaring back. Hopefully, anyway….

still very pretty!
last fall my daughter went to the local nursery to see what was left before they closed for the year. the owner sold her 3 “bushes” (sticks really) that she claimed would reblossom in spring/summer and have gorgeous purple flowers. she got them for a song and took a chance. this summer they were gorgeous–and as advertised. the hummers were all over those bushes.
i have not have similar luck with nurseries here though.

They are normally sold as “bare root,” with which I had no experience. I had no idea what to do with those sticks when they came in the mail but I read the directions. Soak them in water overnight before planting and keep them well-watered until they show real growth. But ever since then, I avoid bare root whenever possible. Just one more complicating factor I don’t need!

I saw an article yesterday from the UK – I think only around 25% of their cameras are still working – they’ve taken out the rest! ROFLMAO

IKR??? From a 12 year old!!!! Holy crap! I never would have thought of that! HB donated her hair – she had hair down past her ass and got it ALL cut off. The first time I saw her, I didn’t even recognize her!!!

They could only use the sections that hadn’t been dyed but she had plenty of hair, even taking that into account.

“It’s funny, but it’s also right on the money for those of us ‘getting up there in years’. I can remember what they served for dinner at my Boy Scout summer camp on a Saturday night back in July,1966, but fuck if I remember what I had for lunch yesterday afternoon. My wife calls it ‘selective amnesia’ – I guess that’s as good a name as any for it, but I have a theory also.
I think what happens is, our brains just get all filled up with shit and we forget to delete the old useless files, so your brain computer or what ever the fuck it is just writes over a buncha shit at random, deleting the other shit. That theory works just as well as any other you might come up with. Where are my glasses?”

Why can’t you just do it yourself at home?

i used to color my own hair, but the color was always flat. this has tones and looks so natural. far superior to anything i could do at home.

What a difference! Weird weather today – partly sunny, crazy wind (had to take my flag and vinca planter down), and a high of 82, now down to 75. GT never showed – hussy is probably shacking up! LOL

I am adding a short daily prayer to the board. I would invite each of you, if you wish, to also add one or maybe two of your own liking. I do not want to stifle anyone but please limit yourself to one or two religious postings. here’s one I found that I liked.
