Gerenuks

They look like a cross between an antelope and a giraffe

Some of the most notable characteristics of the gerenuk are its long, slender neck and thin legs. Gerenuks have also wedge-shaped skulls and shorter noses than many antelope species, lending them a giraffe-like appearance.

Their name means “giraffe-necked”

Gerenuks look so similar to giraffes that they were given the name garanuug, which means “giraffe-necked” in Somali.

They can stand up to find food

Gerenuk diets consist of plant matter from trees, bushes, and other plants. Unique structures in their spine allow them to stand upright on their hind legs to reach food as high as 2 m (about 6 feet) in the air.

Gerenuks never need to drink

These animals get all the moisture that they need from the plants that they consume. Scientists studying gerenuks have observed them for weeks without ever seeing them drink water.

They are surprisingly fast

Gerenuks are prey for lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and other African carnivores. To escape these predators, gerenuks can run up to about 40 miles per hour.

They mark their territory with tar and urine

Male gerenuks secrete a thick, tarry substance from ducts near their eyes. They then wipe this fluid on trunks and branches to alert other males of their territorial boundaries. Male gerenuks also urinate to mark these boundaries. This method only discourages other adult males; female gerenuks and their fawns can move freely through a male’s territory.

Gerenuks have scent glands in unusual places

Many animals use scent to mark their territory. However, unlike most animals, the scent glands of a gerenuk are located behind their knees and inside their hooves. These glands also play a role in reproduction, as they produce pheromones that can help gerenuks attract a mate.

They have a natural defense against thorns

Gerenuks must forage through spiny bushes to find the leaves that make up the bulk of their diet. Their large eyes are vulnerable to scratches or other wounds from sharp thorns. The gerenuk’s long eyelashes protect their delicate eyes from injury as they search for food.

Gerenuks can live up to 13 years in captivity

In nature, gerenuks generally reach about 8 years of age. However, without pressure to find food and avoid predators, captive gerenuks can live much longer than their wild counterparts.

Their mating behaviors are unusual

As gerenuks prepare to mate, the female will raise her nose and pull her ears close to her head. The male will then present his long neck in the hopes that the female will choose to mate with him. Before mating, the male will wipe the female with the scent glands near their eyes and sometimes tap or even kick the female gerenuk in the stomach with his foreleg.

Females live together and males live alone

If you observe a group of gerenuks in the wild, they are almost always adult females and fawns. Male gerenuks leave their maternal groups when they reach sexual maturity. From that point on, they remain solitary, interacting only to defend their territory from other males or breed with females.

Gerenuk pregnancies last about 7 months

Gerenuk breeding happens year-round, and most mothers have only one fawn at a time. Female gerenuks remain pregnant for about 7 months. The newborns are able to stand within minutes after birth.

Hiding is the key to gerenuk fawn survival

Despite their ability to move independently soon after birth, delicate young gerenuks are vulnerable to predators and dangers in the environment. They spend much of their early months hiding in trees, bushes, and piles of leaves and grasses for more than 9 hours a day. Their mothers forage for food while they remain safe. After each nursing period, both mother and fawn move to a new area.

They have a vocabulary of their own

All gerenuks regardless of age or sex communicate with a series of vocalizations. Each sound has a distinct meaning among gerenuks. Loud bleating indicates danger and helps alert other gerenuks. Mothers bleat softly to their young. A whistling noise indicates irritation or annoyance.

I expected it would take a lot out of him when his wife died a few years ago. And I need to know if I have to find someone else to fix my mower. I know my neighbor, Mark, who sold me the mower, can do it but he charges an arm and a leg. However, since JD has now agreed to free up their parts, the price might come down a bit. We’ll see.

    1. OK – had to call Sis on this one since she lives nearby. She is quite familiar with the woman and told me her vet clinic in Beatrice shares a driveway with who, you ask? THE HUMANE SOCIETY!!! Yet never once did they intervene!!! About 7-8 years ago, that vet bought Sis’s grandson’s first lamb he showed at 4-H – they always auction off the livestock after the show. She said up until a few weeks ago, which was the last time she went that way into Beatrice (she usually takes a back road), there were still horses there.

            1. I don’t know anything about the woman but, whether this is the case here or not, FAR too many people think with their hearts instead of their heads! They want to help soooo badly, and that’s great…BUT….when they don’t know WTH they are doing, that just exacerbates the problems. Same for people who go out and buy a pony/horse for their kids willy-nilly, with no plans or knowledge about caring for that animal! 9 times out of 10, that ends up being the origin story.

              2. OK, first off…..horses, for the most part, are considered just so much livestock and/or working animals in this part of the country, unfortunately. They are NOT treated the same – neither are cats, dogs, cattle, sheep, goats, etc., etc., etc. as they are in more, shall we say, “cosmopolitan” states. It is farm country and they are farm animals – period. That has a lot to do with it – they are very casual about animal care. And Beatrice is very close to Omaha/Lincoln, i.e., city folk – many people who live there work in one or the other.

Even my neighbors across the street with 2 horses – he never, ever rides them – nobody does – except when he helps move cattle. IDK what kind of personal relationship they have with them, if any, but that’s the only time I’ve seen them out of the pasture.

2ND SMARTEST GUY IN THE WORLD

by John W. Whitehead and Nisha Whitehead

EXCERPT: “When players are piled on top of each other after a mad scramble for a loose ball, it’s a free-for-all. There are no rules. Anything goes. That’s because there’s nobody in the pile to monitor what’s going on.” — Mike Thomas, sports editor, Sportscasting, 9 November 2020

What is playing out before our eyes right now should be familiar to any fan of football: it’s called the pile-on, a brutal, frenzied, desperate play to seize control and gain power while crushing the opposition. In this particular analogy, “we the people” are trapped at the bottom of that pile, buried under a mountain of bread-and-circus distractions, economic worries, environmental disasters, power plays, power grabs, police raids, indictments and circus politics.

The Maui wildfires. The Trump indictments. Hunter Biden’s legal troubles. The looming 2024 presidential election. The Ukraine-Russia conflict. In the midst of this pile-on of woes, worries and semi-manufactured crises falling with sledgehammer-like frequency, monopolizing the media narrative and eclipsing all other news, it’s difficult to stay focused on what’s really going on, and yet something is brewing.

Pay attention. Caught up in the partisan boxing match that is politics today, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s real. The indictments against Trump, the investigation of Hunter Biden, and the chatter of the political classes aren’t real; they are more sound and fury, signifying nothing in the end. As Aldous Huxley observed in Brave New World Revisited:

‘Non-stop distractions of the most fascinating nature are deliberately used as instruments of policy, for the purpose of preventing people from paying too much attention to the realities of the social and political situation… Only the vigilant can maintain their liberties, and only those who are constantly and intelligently on the spot can hope to govern themselves effectively by democratic procedures.’

    So, what is real?…..”

  12. insurers in FLA get fined for using taxpayers’ monies for prohibited sex change medicines or surgeries.
    FTA
Five Medicaid healthcare insurers have violated Florida’s rule against using taxpayer funds to provide transgender treatments, and the state is now fining them for the action. It’s the first time any state has taken this step in regard to gender transition coverage.

Among the procedures one of the plans covered was a double mastectomy on a 16-year-old girl. The other plans paid for puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for minors. Florida health officials sent out letters informing the providers they were being fined over the violation late Thursday.

“These plans recklessly continued to cover these services with permanent, harmful effects, after the rule was adopted,” Jason Weida, Secretary of the Agency for Healthcare Administration, told The Daily Wire news podcast Morning Wire. “[They] will not stand in the way of our fight to protect the innocence of Florida’s kids.”

Though a federal judge recently blocked a new law in Florida that banned transgender surgeries and medications for children, a rule from the Agency for Health Care Administration still required the state’s Medicaid plan providers to deny coverage for all such treatments.

The rule went into effect last August after the agency performed a systematic review of the medical literature on treatments for gender dysphoria in children, including surgeries, puberty blockers, and cross-sex hormones. It determined they are not medically necessary. But in December, well after the agency says Medicaid healthcare plan providers were notified of the rule, the five providers covered the trans treatments anyway. The violations were caught as part of a routine audit of the Medicaid system.

  16. “Jack Smith’s “Flight Risk” Deception–After the special counsel claimed in a secret court filing that Donald Trump was a flight risk, Twitter fought back. Then Smith insisted it was just a big mistake.”
    JULIE KELLY
    AUG 18, 2023

EXCERPT: “A few weeks after his appointment as special counsel to take over the Justice Department’s existing investigations into Donald Trump on two criminal matters, Jack Smith carefully plotted his first move. Get Trump’s DMs. For non-Twitter users, DM is short for “direct messages.” But that’s not all Smith had in his crosshairs. According to a recently unsealed search warrant served on Twitter earlier this year, the longtime DOJ apparatchik also wanted tweets that the former president drafted, deleted, liked, or retweeted.

Certain that evidence of criminal activity existed deep in the bowels of Trump’s long-dormant Twitter file, Smith further sought the identity of accounts the former president “followed, unfollowed, muted, unmuted, blocked or unblocked, and all users who have followed, unfollowed, muted, unmuted, blocked or unblocked the subject account.” The social media behemoth, at the time transitioning to its new owner, Elon Musk, also would be forced to disclose any purchases the @realDonaldTrump account made as well as associated credit card numbers and billing records.

And that wasn’t all Smith wanted. To ensure Trump didn’t learn of the search warrant and attempt to invoke executive privilege to protect his records from the prying eyes of Joe Biden’s Justice Department, Smith applied for a nondisclosure order. Twitter, if a judge approved both the warrant and the nondisclosure, would be prevented from notifying the former president of the warrant for 180 days.

Smith, of course, got his wish. Beryl Howell, the former chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, signed off on the broad search warrant on January 17. The Obama-appointed judge also approved a nondisclosure order under the terms of the Stored Communications Act, the statute Smith relied on to hide the warrant from Trump.

And that’s when Twitter cried foul. Twitter: No, Donald Trump is Not a Flight Risk! In a motion asking to vacate or modify the nondisclosure order, Twitter made a number of arguments related to Trump’s First Amendment rights and the novel nature of the case. “[The] issues presented by the government’s demand for private presidential communications without notice are weighty and entirely without legal precedent. These executive privilege issues are distinct from issues presented in a typical search warrant,” Twitter’s legal counsel explained in a February 6 filing.

But one claim really irked Twitter: the suggestion that Donald Trump was a flight risk. The Stored Communications Act requires the government to meet one of five criteria before seeking a nondisclosure order that would prevent a provider from notifying a customer about a search warrant: one is fear the target will flee prosecution—a claim Jack Smith’s office proposed in its application for the nondisclosure order.

And, it appears, a claim Smith later explained he made in error. Which is impossible to believe considering the flight risk threat was discussed by his lawyers during private conversations and at least one sealed court hearings.

In a phone call with Smith’s office on January 31, Twitter’s senior counsel “raised specifically the claim in the Non-Disclosure Order that the former President was likely to flee from prosecution if the Non-Disclosure Order or Warrant was disclosed.” Counsel further told Greg Bernstein, one of Smith’s prosecutors, “that it seemed very unlikely that the former President presents a risk of flight because of a warrant for his Twitter data.” (The name of Twitter’s senior counsel at the time is redacted in court documents.)…….

    Press Release

Washington, D.C. — Today, U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) will introduce a resolution to censure and condemn United States District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan, the judge presiding over President Donald Trump’s case in Washington, D.C., for showing open bias and partisanship in her official duties on the bench.

Tanya Chutkan was appointed as a district judge for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia by President Barack Obama after donating thousands of dollars to get him elected. During her time on the bench, Judge Chutkan has inappropriately expressed support for violent protests that occurred in the summer of 2020, all the while handing down multiple tough sentences

to non-violent January 6th defendants. Additionally, during a sentencing hearing in October 2022, she inappropriately lamented that President Donald Trump “remains free to this day.”

“It is deeply concerning that a United States District Court judge would exhibit such blatant political bias from the bench. Judge Tanya Chutkan’s extreme sentencing of January 6th defendants, while openly supporting the violent Black Lives Matter riots of 2020, showcases a complete disregard for her duty of impartiality and the rule of law. Justice may be blind, but the American people are not – we see Judge Chutkan for her actions, and we rebuke them in the greatest possible sense,” Congressman Gaetz said.

ENTIRE ARTICLE — “Vivek Ramaswamy’s parents immigrated from India to the USA about the year 1983 per publicly available information and Vivek was born soon thereafter in 1985. It takes at least five (5) years to become a naturalized United States Citizen.

The Three Legged Stool Test for “natural born Citizen” of the United States to Constitutional Standards

Vivek Ramaswamy refuses as of the date of this article to answer direct questions regarding the citizenship and/or immigration status of his parents when he was born in 1985 in Ohio and/or exactly what year did his parents immigrate from India to the USA. And a third question that needs to be answered … does Vivek now hold dual citizenship or has he ever been held dual citizenship, in his case both India and the United States.

After months of trying to get an answer from him via various contact modes, it is obvious he is deliberately evading answering such questions. Thus we must assume he does not want to answer those questions because he fears the true answers will be politically detrimental to his political aspirations. He wants to run for President and Commander in Chief but does not want to be fully transparent on this issue when transparency by candidates for the highest office in the land is of utmost importance to the electorate.

Based on the public information available at this time, and the fact that Vivek is evading answering direct questions on the matter, it has thus been deduced that both of Vivek Ramaswamy’s parents were not U.S. Citizens in 1985 when Vivek was born. Thus Vivek was born with dual citizenship. He was not born a “natural born Citizen” with the required three legs of being born in the USA to a father and a mother who were U.S. Citizens when Vivek was born. Vivek Ramaswamy fails “The Three Legged Stool Test” for being a “natural born Citizen” of the United States. Vivek Ramaswamy was born to a Citizen of India father (minus one stool leg) and to a Citizen of India mother (minus the 2nd stool leg).

The normal path to becoming a naturalized U.S. Citizen takes five years. Vivek Ramaswamy was born in 1985 . His father and mother emigrated from India to the USA about 40 years ago per the April 3rd, 2023 article in the Washington Post. Calculating back from 2023, that yields the immigration year to the USA for Vivek’s parents as being about 1983. Allowing +-2 years, i.e., 1981-1985 for that calculated “about” year of 1983 for the deduced year of immigration to the USA, there was not sufficient time for either of Vivek’s parents to become naturalized U.S. Citizens when Vivek was born in 1985, since it required at least five years to become a naturalized U.S. Citizen.”

          1. No, it is rarely brought up any more anywhere except for those hardcore Constitutionalists (like myself). The irreversible step is when the Speaker of the House signs the document certifying the candidates as being eligible in a Presidential election. That document was illegally modified in order to certify Obama.

  21. Whoa! This got my attention!!!

“This is a photograph of an “Atomic Cataract”, belonging to a survivor of the Hiroshima nuclear bomb…”

“Eye disturbance caused by atomic bomb radiation can be divided into three groups: direct injury immediately after exposure, eye lesions associated with radiation syndrome, and delayed disturbance. The crystalline lens of the eye is the most radiosensitive. Atomic bomb cataract has been investigated in a number of studies.

The first section of this chapter discusses radiation cataract in terms of the incidence and characteristics. The second section deals with atomic bomb cataract, which can be diagnosed based on the four criteria: (1) opacity of the crystalline lens, (2) a history of proximal exposure, (3) lack of eye disease complicating cataract, and (4) non-exposure to radiation other than atomic bombing. The prevalence of cataract and severity of opacity are found to correlate with exposure doses and age at the time of exposure. Furthermore, it is found to correlate with distance from the hypocenter, the condition of shielding, epilation, and the presence or absence or degree of radiation syndrome. (N.K.)”
