What type of animal is a scorpionfly?
The Scorpionfly is an insect of the Panorpidae family, which is the largest family of order Mecoptra with 480 species. It is often addressed as the common Scorpionfly or Panorpa communis, and it belongs to the genus Panorpa. This genus has 260 species.
How many scorpionflies are there in the world?
The total strength of the Mecoptera order is innumerable as it is widespread. From North America to South America and from Asia to Australia, the Scorpionfly distribution has spread worldwide.
Where does a scorpionfly live?
The Scorpionflies adapt to the grassland, healthy land, moorland, fresh water, farmland, wetlands, woodland, towns, and gardens.
What is a scorpionfly’s habitat?
The Scorpionflies are known to adapt to moist environments, mosses, and a few Mecoptera flies also inhibit semi-desert habitats. The common Scorpionflies are vividly found in woodlands with broad leaves, as this Scorpionfly habitat has superabundant damp leaf litter.

Who do scorpionflies live with? The Scorpionfly families are not social and do not move in groups. They are found as solitary or in mating pairs. How long does a scorpionfly live? The Scorpionfly life cycle consists of four stages that begin with an egg’s formation. There is no recorded information on the average lifespan of these insects. How do they reproduce? The male attracts the female by flapping its wings. Once the female is submissive, it drags the abdomen of a female with the help of claspers. The male presents the female with the nuptial gift of thick saliva secretions. The mating scorpionfly feeds during the copulation time, which may last from 15 minutes to several hours. Some scorpionflies also offer dead insects or bugs as a present. Some scorpionflies emit chemical forms to grab the attention of the female. While the female inspects the offering, the male scorpionfly probes into female reproductive organs; in this process, it is most probable that the female denies the gift and flies away. If she acquires the gift, it lowers itself in an upside-down hanging position approving the copulation. During copulation, the female preys on the present, and the male holds up the female to anchor it. The mating time lasts from 15 minutes to several hours. On culmination, the female lays eggs in a moist environment. What is their conservation status? As Scorpionflies are spread in high concentrations worldwide, the conservation status of this common Scorpionfly is Least Concern.Scorpionfly Fun FactsWhat do scorpionflies look like? The Scorpionfly is an insect. It is a colorful fly. The common Scorpionfly has a yellow-black body with a reddish head. The tail of these insects is also red. The length of Scorpionfly wings is 1.4 inches, slightly more significant than the total length of its body. The Scorpion insect attained its significance and name due to the anatomy of the genus Panorpa. The male insects have genitals at the end of their tail, which replicates scorpion stingers. These are called claspers. The abdomen of a male Scorpion fly is swollen, and the swelling is referred to as a genital capsule. The female Scorpionfly abdomen is comparatively slim. The Scorpionfly has four membranaceous wings and filamentous antennae. Their prolonged head is signified with mouthparts like a beak. It has large eyes. Their abdomen is cylindrical with 11 segments. In the Scorpionfly males, the swollen abdomen is curved upwards that looks like a scorpion-like tail.

How cute are they?
This species creates curiosity in its appearance. Their scorpion-like tail allures the human eye. But the Scorpionfly stings are not poisonous, indicating that these flies are cute but not harmful.
How do they communicate?
The Scorpionflies are not social animals. But they are very expressive while communicating during mating. There is significant diversity in the male’s mating techniques. The Scorpionflies communication includes emitting chemical signals, offering nuptial presents, flapping wings, and waving with antennae. In some of the Scorpionfly groups, the males even dance to attract female attention.
How big is a scorpionfly?
The common Scorpionflies are 0.1-1.4 inches. Its length is relatively equal to that of a medium-sized Mecoptera order insect.
How fast can a scorpionfly fly?
The locomotion of a scorpionfly is flying short distances. Despite having two pairs of wings, the Scorpionfly takes a slow flight with variable patterns. The Scorpionfly can fly at a speed of 1.1 mph.

How much does a scorpionfly weigh?
The exact weight of Mecoptera is unknown. However, they are small to medium-sized insects with long slender bodies and short membranous wings that resemble flies.
What do they eat?
The Scorpionflies prey on dead insects, insects trapped in spider webs, petals, leaves. The Scorpionfly diet also includes decaying vegetation.
Are they dangerous?
These flies do not bite; hence the Scorpionfly sting or bite is harmless to humans. Quite contrary to the scary appearance of Scorpionfly tails, they are not dangerous.
Did you know…
Scorpionflies play a prominent role in forensic entomology, revealed a study related to the developmental stages of arthropods on the corpse, as these flies are the first ones to arrive at it.
The mating process of the Scorpion fly is the most dreadful and aggressive. There are fair chances of the female killing the male during the aggressive copulation.
Even the Scorpionfly larvae can feed on a dead insect. If the hot conditions of the habitat are not favorable, these flies choose to remain in the current state of egg or pupa even for several months.
The flies of the Panorpa species are predatory during the day and can be opportunistic hunters during the dark.

this is HORRIFIC! 5 yr old shoots toddler in the head with a gun–BOTH had drugs in their systems
article
Indiana parents have been charged after their 5-year-old son allegedly shot and killed his 16-month-old brother. Police say both young children had drugs in their systems.
Around 3:00 p.m. on March 28, officers from the Lafayette Police Department responded to a report that a child wasn’t breathing at an apartment building in Lafayette — about an hour north of Indianapolis. Cops discovered a 1-year-old boy deceased and determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.
After an investigation, police said that 16-month-old Isiah Johnson had been shot and killed by his 5-year-old brother.
Law & Crime reported, “Following the death, toxicology results reportedly showed the toddler tested positive for marijuana. His older brother allegedly had cocaine in his system.”
Deonta Johnson, 27, and Shatia Welch, 24, were arrested on Monday afternoon during a traffic stop in LaPorte, Indiana. According to a statement by the Lafayette Police Department, the parents were charged with neglect resulting in death, neglect resulting in bodily injury, conspiracy to commit dealing a narcotic drug, dealing a narcotic drug, possession of a narcotic, conspiracy to commit dealing marijuana, dealing marijuana, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia. Johnson was also charged with obstruction of justice.

Welch wasn’t at the apartment at the time of the shooting, and Johnson was asleep on a couch inside the apartment, according to NBC News.
Johnson allegedly told investigators that he was awakened by a “loud boom” and found his youngest son in the bedroom.
Lafayette police lieutenant Matt Gard told Journal & Courier, “When I arrived on scene, I don’t believe any life-saving measures were taken” on the toddler.
WXIN reported, “At the time, he denied that Isiah Johnson had been shot and denied that he had a gun in the apartment. However, he later told officers that Welch, the leaseholder of the apartment, did own a gun.
Welch allegedly told police that the gun was locked away under her bed in a box. According to the affidavit, the mother admitted to investigators that she had lost one of the two sets of keys — but that her 5-year-old son “would not know what the keys belonged to.”
Police said they found 93 fentanyl pills, marijuana, and paraphernalia inside the apartment.
Authorities stated that surveillance footage from the apartment complex showed Johnson leaving his unit with a bag after the shooting and placing it in a car. A search warrant was obtained, and police reportedly found marijuana stashed inside the same vehicle.
The father’s trial is scheduled to start on Nov. 28, and the mother’s trial is expected to begin on Dec. 12.

As Trump walked onto the stage at the Iowa Republican dinner, the venue played the song Only In America by Brooks & Dunn.
At the exact moment Trump stepped onto the stage, members of the audience could hear the lyric, “One could end up going to prison, one just might be president.”
This so they think cute little stunt was disgustingly disgraceful to our great POTUS, a good man who doesn’t deserve any of this. These people are deranged, hating on a man who wants only to restore America to it’s glory including them.

Sorry Hawkeyes, but, just speaking for myself, I will never look on Iowans the same after the disgraceful performance by your governor Friday night.
Her disgraceful treatment of President Trump is unforgivable. He is a gentleman and a great American patriot who is serving his country when it needs him, while being attacked for 7 years by the anti-Americans like your governor just because he wants to make America great again and because he believes in the America First policies.
In his first term, he was extremely helpful to the farmers and citizens of Iowa. The GOPe/RINOs didn’t do that, President Trump did that.

Sliding on down…Good morning (at least, it is still morning here!) from nice, cool Nebraska! It dropped into the 60’s last night and I woke up to lightning in the distance, and light rain drops, with a cool breeze. Simply delightful! The light rain drops turned into heavier rain. With no a/c in my truck, I headed out of here at first light for my monthly shopping trip.
By the time I got back, sun was shining, clouds had blown away and it was warming up but it’s not supposed to get beyond the mid-80’s – still humid, tho. Gas is up to $3.59/gal (w/ethanol) here, $3.69 in Pierce, and $3.49 in Norfolk. I found a station at $3.39 for my gas, same place where I can use the ATM machine for only $.99 (instead of $5/6 at most of them) since my bank’s ATM was OTO. I also buy my cigs there. I’m going early more often – WM was a breeze! Not busy at all! I even found a parking space right up front.
When I got everything unloaded, I ran down to pick up the case of jelly I was supposed to get yesterday. It was on sale – $10 less than last year!

A paddleboarder who was with Campbell told investigators they’d seen him standing on his paddleboard and lose his balance before falling into the water. The paddleboarder said Campbell struggled to stay afloat before submerging. Investigators were told Campbell was not wearing a personal flotation device.
The fellow paddleboarder told investigators they tried to swim to Campbell’s location but couldn’t reach him in time. The paddleboarder swam to shore and asked someone to call 911. The Dukes County Regional Emergency Communications Center initiated an immediate emergency search and rescue response by multiple public safety agencies.
“The fellow paddleboarder told investigators they tried to swim to Campbell’s location but couldn’t reach him in time.”
Reach him in time to save him? Then did the 2nd paddleboarder think he was deceased, or was that person unable to reach him because he was drifting away?

“UVA Wrongfully Fired Employee for Refusing COVID Shot”
Jul 28, 2023
EXCERPT: “The Sixteenth Judicial Court in Virginia ruled yesterday that the University of Virginia Health System (UVA) wrongfully denied an employee’s religious exemption and unlawfully fired her for not taking the COVID-19 shot. The Court granted the employee injunctive relief by reversing the UVA’s firing decision and awarding monetary damages to the employee.
In McCoy v. Rector & Visitors UVA/UVA Health System, Virginia attorneys Rick Boyer, David Browne, Christopher M. Collins, Bret G. Daniel, and Patrick M. McSweeney represented plaintiff Kaycee McCoy in the case. McCoy had worked as a highly specialized cytotechnologist at UVA for nearly 10 years. In September 2021, she requested a religious exemption to the university’s COVID-19 shot mandate since the university’s vaccination policy allowed for exemptions for medical or religious reasons. A committee of UVA’s human resources personnel reviewed McCoy’s exemption request to determine the sincerity of her religious beliefs, but ultimately denied her exemption without explanation and did not allow her to appeal the decision. UVA fired McCoy in November 2021 after she did not comply with the university’s mandate according to her religious beliefs.”
————–
Judge Worrell noted the realm of religion is beyond the expertise of any government body, and that since McCoy had “met all the necessary requirements to show she had sincerely held religious belief that allowed her to seek an exemption” under UVA policy, he ruled UVA denied her exemption and fired her “in an arbitrary and capricious manner.”
The ruling prevents UVA from discriminating against McCoy for the COVID shot as long as she continues to be eligible for a religious exemption. The Court ordered UVA to pay damages in the amount of McCoy’s salary from the date of her wrongful firing.
In January 2022, UVA rescinded its COVID shot mandate after Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order removing the mandate for state employees.
Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver said, “This is an important victory for religious liberty and for those who have not caved into these unlawful shot mandates. Forcing an employee to choose between their sincerely held religious beliefs and their job is highly unconstitutional. Applying for a religious exemption is a legal right and cannot be arbitrarily denied.”

“EXCLUSIVE: 7-Year-Old Boy Sues California School District for Violations of Civil Rights”
EXCERPT: “The first thing “H.N.” did when he got up on a July Sunday morning was say hi to his dog, Biscuit, and then start reading “Treasure Island,” which after just the first chapter may overtake “Robinson Crusoe” as his all-time favorite book—but that needs to wait until he finishes the book. Later, he played Monopoly with a friend, practiced baseball (which he plays for his school team), and told us about his favorite board game, Kids Against Maturity.
His room looks like a typical young boy’s, with board games, Nerf guns, baseball equipment, and toy vehicles. In the living room is a miniature train set, which he said he worked on for months when he was younger.

H.N., now 8, is going into third grade this fall at Brook Knoll Elementary School in northern California, and so far math and reading are his favorite subjects. What makes H.N. different from most other kids—other than that he is very mature for his age—is that he is the plaintiff in a case that was filed with the California Superior Court, Santa Cruz County, when he was 7 years old.
Because of the lawsuit, he is not disclosing his name and just goes by H.N. for privacy purposes. He is suing the Scotts Valley Unified School District, the district superintendent, the school principal, and two teachers for negligence, false imprisonment, violating his civil rights, and other charges.
—————–
It all started in September 2021 when at times he refused to wear a mask in school and did not consent to getting tested for COVID-19 weekly. “I did not like this big gigantic thing up my nose,” said H.N. From September 2021 to June 2022, H.N. and his father informed the school principal multiple times that they did not consent to “experimental medical products like masking or COVID injections.”
H.N. stated that he does not like to wear a mask because the virus travels through the mask anyway, he cannot breathe well in the mask, he cannot see the facial expressions of his teachers and classmates when they wear masks, and there is a chance of bacteria getting trapped in the mask. In addition, he said that proper ventilation is superior to masks according to multiple studies.
But that was not enough, and he continued to be disciplined for not complying with school regulations. The complaint mentions nine separate incidents in which H.N. refused to wear a mask and subsequently was isolated in a classroom by himself with a substitute teacher, taken to the principal’s office, or taken to classroom 34, which was used for storage at the time.
Another incident included in the complaint took place on Jan. 11, 2022, when H.N. was allegedly harassed for not wanting to use hand sanitizer. H.N. says that after he told the teachers that hand washing with soap is more effective, he was sent to Nurse Selena Treuge, who allowed him to wash his hands as a one-time exception. The next day, Jan. 12, the same incident was repeated. This time H.N. showed his teacher, Ms. Gelter, and his nurse a CDC report indicating that hand washing is more effective than hand sanitizer. He was again allowed to wash his hands as an exception.
The trigger point for H.N. that led to his refusal to wear a mask for good was seeing a picture Gov. Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco and Los Angeles mayors at the SoFi stadium in Inglewood, Calif., not wearing masks during the NFC title game between the Rams and the San Francisco 49ers on or around Jan. 31, 2022.
“That was the moment H.N. eventually decided to follow their lead and stop wearing his mask at school in protest starting on Feb. 22, 2022,” reads the complaint.”

Wow! This is big, if true…one of the biggest and longest-running trucking companies!
“Yellow exec tells sales staff company will file bankruptcy Monday”
Rachel Premack · Wednesday, July 26, 2023
ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Yellow’s senior vice president of sales informed her staff on Wednesday that their last day would be Friday and the less-than-truckload carrier will file bankruptcy on Monday, according to three employees who attended the video call. Yellow (NASDAQ: YELL) is the third-largest LTL company and employs some 30,000 workers, including around 22,000 Teamsters members. The trucking company had an operating revenue of $5.245 billion in 2022.
The sales employees were approved to tell customers of the bankruptcy plans and to take paid time off for the rest of the week. In a meeting later Wednesday, according to a video of the meeting viewed by FreightWaves and two employees present, the senior vice president told employees to backtrack on the bankruptcy statement. She said to “correct” any customers that were previously told there would be a bankruptcy and to share the following statement:
“Yellow’s talks with the IBT are ongoing. As previously stated, and in keeping with fiduciary responsibility of the company’s executives, the company continues to prepare for a range of contingencies.”
A Yellow representative shared the same statement when FreightWaves reached out for comment to learn more about the message that the trucking company may file for bankruptcy on Monday. Yellow’s vice president of technology services also told her team the above statement Wednesday afternoon, according to one Yellow employee. That employee said, previously in the day, their boss advised their team that a bankruptcy could happen at any time and to send out resumes.”

EXCERPT: “The inaugural class of third graders at the LeBron James-supported I Promise School in Akron will soon start eighth grade, and, for each of the last three school years, none of those students have scored “proficient” in Ohio’s math proficiency test.
That fact was alarming to some Akron Board of Education members who listened to an update during their meeting Monday on the school’s progress.
Meanwhile, the school — which, by design, only takes students who are two or more years behind grade level — was placed on a state academic watchlist for schools flagged for “Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI).” To be added to the watchlist, at least one of the schools’ student subgroup’s performance must be in the lowest 5% of schools in the state. At I Promise, Black students and students with disabilities meet that criteria.”
——————
However, the apparent lack of improvement for most students on state tests — despite those additional resources — was a source of dismay for some on the Akron Board of Education, who received an update on the school’s progress since it began in 2018 during a presentation Monday.
“Where I’m coming from is that we keep talking about the resources, the resources, the resources that we’re putting into the I Promise School, and the kids at the other schools don’t have anywhere near the same number of resources, and yet that the difference there is not what I would think it would be,” said Board of Education President Derrick Hall.”

it’s not the AMOUNT of resources–aka teachers and the like–it’s the QUALITY.
more pay more benefits…that attracts greedier teachers not necessarily BETTER dedicated ones

“You know how, when you think you’ve heard everything stupid there is to say , and then you hear something like this?
The gospel according to Independent.co.uk – A rocket launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX last week from California may have punched a hole in the Earth’s ionosphere, a new analysis suggests. The assessment points out that the Falcon 9 rocket launched on 19 July from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, likely punched a hole in the ionosphere – a layer around Earth consisting of the fourth state of matter plasma, with a sea of electrically charged particles floating at about 80-650km (50-400 miles) above the surface.
Reviewing footage from the launch, space physicist Jeff Baumgardner from Boston University in the US, said it was “quite possible” that an ionospheric “hole” was made by the launch.
Sounds to me like we’re back to punching holes in the ozone layer with our hair spray again……”

I never did get into the hippie craze – too practical; as for Woodstock, I heard about it but wasn’t especially interested, tbh. That was in August ’69 and I was pre-occupied with my first job at the pharmacy and met my first hubby shortly after.

“Are You At A Nursing Home Or The U.S. Senate Chamber? 9 Clues To Look For”

POLITICS · Jul 29, 2023 · BabylonBee.com
“There you are, sitting across from an elderly, demented man drooling on his oatmeal, when suddenly you begin to wonder: Am I in a nursing home, or in the chambers of the United States Senate?? To help you solve the mystery, look for these nine helpful differences:
1. Nursing Home: Residents call out “Bingo!” to win money
Senate: Residents call out “Aye!” to spend your money
2. Nursing Home: Costs $10,000 per resident per month
Senate: Costs $10 billion per resident per second
3. Nursing Home: Residents alert a nurse when they’ve soiled themselves
Senate: Residents wave to camera as if nothing happened when they’ve soiled themselves
4. Nursing Home: Surprisingly, plagued by STDs
Senate: Not surprisingly, plagued by STDs
5. Nursing Home: Aides tell residents which domino to play
Senate: Aides tell residents which country to invade
6. Nursing Home: Pudding and smoothies in the cafeteria at 4
Senate: Pudding, adrenochrome, and roasted flies in the cafeteria at 4
7. Nursing Home: Smells of death and fecal matter
Senate: Same, if the President stops by
8. Nursing Home: A bunch of old, angry people yelling about missing Matlock
Senate: A bunch of old, angry people yelling about missing Matlock
9. Nursing Home: Residents all still alive
Senate: Residents were all, at some point, alive
It takes a keen eye to spot the differences – let us know any that we missed!”

“Aide Pushes Cart Through Halls Of Congress Yelling ‘Bring Out Your Dead!'”

POLITICS · Jul 29, 2023 · BabylonBee.com
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Long-time congressional aide Mark Mathis has been tasked with slowly pushing a cart through the halls of congress to collect the dead bodies.
“I’m getting better!” shouted Dianne Feinstein as her aides tossed her into the wheelbarrow. “I think I’ll go for a walk!”
With members of congress keeling over at an unprecedented rate, Mr. Mathis was pressed into collecting bodies full-time. “The dead body smell was getting overpowering,” explained Mr. Mathis. “So, now I push this official Congressional wheelbarrow around to collect the corpses. Government work – am I right?”
Congressional aides report the cart has been a boon for both the Senate and the House. “It really helps us to know how many votes we need on a bill,” said House aide Lacy Rogers. “When we hear ‘Bring out your dead!’, we run into the hall to count how many of the dead are Democrats and how many are Republicans. We’ve got some tight votes next week, so the wheelbarrow count could really tip things either way.”
At publishing time, Mr. Mathis was seen arguing with Senator McConnell’s staff over whether it was against regulation to load up McConnell just yet.”
