Shoebills

They have a prehistoric-like appearance

At times, and from certain angles, they can appear rather menacing, peering down their long, razor-sharp beak, with a hook at the tip.

They can also be extremely cute, and almost ‘cartoon-like’. They have striking pale, blue-eyed genes, which can make them appear not really real.

They are truly unique and beautiful birds.

The shoebill’s flapping when flying is one of the slowest of any birds, at a mere (approx.) 150 flaps per minute

Only larger stalk species have slower flapping than the shoebill.

They have the 3rd longest beak in the world, which enables them to hunt extremely large prey, even baby crocodiles

Their beaks can reach up to 7.4 to 9.4 inches in width, which helps them hunt for fish or snakes as long as 3.2 feet in size.

The razor-sharp edges of its beak, allow it to decapitate their prey quickly

They are known to often behead their prey, before consuming whole.

A shoebill can often benefit from the presence of hippos, which disturb fish, and bulldoze paths through swamps

The shoebill can take advantage of the disturbed fish in the water and strike.

The shoebill is an ambush predator

They often stand still for long periods, motionless like a statue, before launching a vicious attack to kill any prey that come within strike distance.

The shoebill often feeds at night, and is also known to stand on floating vegetation to hunt their prey.

The shoebill favors areas of poorly oxygenated water

This causes the fish living in the water to surface for air more often, which increases the likelihood of the shoebill striking and capturing its prey.

They clatter their bills which like a machine gun

The shoebill is usually silent, but they are known to clatter their bills loudly during courtship or greeting, which can sound a little like a machine gun.

Bill-clattering is a behavior of real storks. They can also let out a high-pitched whine, and even make cow-like ‘moo’ noises.

Shoebill are solitary in their breeding habits, with typically less than 3 nests per square kilometer

The nesting shoebill will vigorously defend their territory between 1 to 1.5 square miles from other shoebill, and large birds.

Shoebills chicks often bully, fight and can kill their siblings (known as ‘siblicide’) when only a few weeks old

Rather disturbingly, this is actually rather common in larger birds.

Often the older, and bigger chick, can hurt a smaller chick, while their parents are away from the nest eventually driving it to live away from the nest. Research suggests, this is due to energy efficiency and survival of the fittest.

The shoebill female always lays two eggs, but only one ever survives

The second egg is seen like a ‘back up’, in case anything is wrong with the first egg. Usually the first to hatch survives only.

The shoebill has long fascinated civilizations

They appear in wall paintings and hieroglyphics of ancient Egyptians, and it’s old Arabic name is Abu-markub, or ‘Father of a Slipper’. This name is in reference to the birds very distinctive beak.

Sadly, the demand for shoebill storks is high

Both in zoos, or for private collectors. There are reports that they can sell for US $10,000-$20,000, making them the most expensive birds in the zoo trade.

The high price encourages shady traders to capture the shoebill and sell to zoos or middle men – reducing the wild population size further. Shoebills rarely breed in captivity.

They are incredibly rare

Birding enthusiasts have to pay local expert guides to go on specialist shoebill tours and safaris, to try and get a glimpse of the elusive, sought after birds in the wild.

This involves going way off the beaten track and into the swamps which they inhabit.

    1. Morning, Pat! And, once again, the speculation explodes – who is to say what is fact and what isn’t…doubtful we’ll ever really “know!” GT is really good at sneaking up on me! I looked out the BR window and didn’t see him anywhere; opened the patio door – nope! I had picked up some canned food yesterday and had a batch mixed up with wormer, ready to go in the fridge. Waited a few minutes, then looked out the door again and there he is, sitting on the sidewalk right in front of the door. It’s hard to see him in the dim early morning, especially when it’s cloudy – starting to rain some now, terribly humid and already 76! Grabbed the dish with canned food and he tucked right in. After a few minutes, I put the dry food out and he ate some of that as well before taking himself off…wherever he goes! He should start gaining some weight now, hopefully.

      Took these pics last night….

        1. Yes, it is – the light shows thru the face – look kinda evil at night! ROFL – I’d been looking for just the right solar light to fit inside, using various pipes and stakes to raise it high enough. That’s the one that has 2 stages – one where the lights change from red to blue to green or just white light. For some reason, the colored lights aren’t working any more but that’s fine w/me – I wanted the white light anyway. It shows up better at night.

The rollout of the **evidence** from whistleblowers bringing documentary evidence with them to establish the Biden Crime Family multiple illegal bribery schemes with CCP/Ukraine officials?

That’s not for you and me. We already knew.

The point is to FORCE – pay attention here – **FORCE** those in denial about The Biden Crime Family into constant and complete and total overwhelming retreat until they have NOWHERE LEFT TO RETREAT TO.

You will know its over when even FAKE NEWS finally has to throw its hands up and go “ALL RIGHT DAMN IT, FINE, IF IT MEANS THAT MUCH TO YOU, YES YES THE BIDEN CRIME FAMILY DID THIS AND THEY’RE GUILTY!”

    We’re almost there.

    Have a little patience.

The most reluctant confession from these propagandists will be especially sweet as they then spend the next year watching every single Trump chimeric illusory prosecution roll over and die.

While The Biden Crime Family’s crimes are fully exhumed, exhaustively examined and universally acknowledged.

Long before November 2024 gets here.

    Have a nice day.

BREAKING UPDATE: Zelensky Associate Was Present at Biden Bribery Meetings – Then Went to Work for President Zelensky Who Now Is Holding Blackmail Information Against Joe Biden (VIDEO)

Author Peter Schweizer went on with Jesse Watters on Monday night where he proceeded to drop another bomb on the Biden Crime Family.

According to Schweizer, who wrote a best-seller “Secret Empires” on the Biden Family crimes, told Jesse that one of Vlodomyr Zelensky’s top officials was sitting in the room when they were discussing bribing the Bidens, Joe and Hunter.

Ukrainian President Zelensky has a top official who was sitting in on meetings where they talked about bribing the Bidens.

Schweizer suggests Zelensky is using this as leverage over the Biden regime for weapons and billions in US dollars.

Many have suspected this for a long time.

Joe Biden is the most corrupt President in the history of the United States, which is being undeniably proven in the House of Representatives every single day. But with all of these horrible revelations and facts, why hasn’t Republican “leadership” in the Senate spoken up and rebuked Crooked Joe Biden and the Radical Left Democrats, Fascists, and Marxists for their criminal acts against our Country, some of them against me. How long does America have to wait for the Senate to ACT?

DEVELOPING: Trump May Be Indicted in Jack Smith’s January 6 Investigation as Early as Tomorrow: CBS News

    https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2023/07/special-counsel-jack-smith-may-indict-trump-as/

Special Counsel Jack Smith may indict President Trump as early as Tuesday (tomorrow) in his January 6 investigation in DC.

Last Tuesday morning President Trump released a statement on the Biden DOJ’s latest attempt to arrest him on junk charges.

“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury Investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump said last week.

According to CBS News, the DC grand jury investigating Trump may indict the former president as early as Tuesday afternoon.

“If there’s going to be an indictment here in DC in the special counsel’s January 6 investigation, it could come as early as tomorrow, 1 pm Eastern time when the grand jury is here in the courthouse. The January 6 grand jury tends to meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” CBS reporter Scott MacFarlane reported.

(This indictment will take Devin Archer’s testimony against Joe and Hunter out of the news cycle)

  9. san francisco asked for private donations/ corporate donations during covid to dispense gift cards to the “afflicted”. they collected $30 million. they can’t account for any of it.
    FTA
And after all that hoopla, and all those $30 millions rolling in … the City doesn’t know what it did with the money.

According to the San Francisco Standard, much of it was transferred into gift cards for big box retailers (who are not plentiful in San Francisco) and then distributed to the afflicted:

An audit completed this year found that San Francisco’s Human Services Agency, which provides a range of welfare services including food and healthcare programs, ignored city rules when it came to distributing thousands of gift cards. It’s uncertain if any of the gift cards were stolen or went to ineligible recipients, but a lack of oversight created a situation ripe for “possible instances of fraud, theft, or abuse,” auditors for the City Controller’s Office wrote.

The audit focused on the handling of $2.5 million in gift cards purchased by the Human Services Agency between August 2017 and March 2021. Specific issues noted in the audit included a failure by city staff to conduct verification checks of gift card inventory, require updated lists of eligible gift card recipients and make sure partner organizations were complying with city rules.
All but one of the eight programs reviewed in the audit that received Human Services Agency gift cards—broken up into prepaid Visa debit cards and gift cards to Safeway and Target—received money from Give2SF’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund.

What a disgusting picture. They treated the public’s hard-earned money like it was government money and then “lost” it.

Then they offered this ridiculous excuse:

“It was not possible in the midst of the early part of the pandemic to get over 2,000 people to personally sign for the gift cards and verify identities,” Human Services Agency officials said in an email. “In addition, at that point in the pandemic, in-person contact for receipt of the gift cards was not recommended from a public health perspective.”

Umm, if there’s free money involved, it most certainly is possible.

Does this sound like a worthy charity to donate to after such a loud appeal and now such a result? The government at all levels spends oodles of money warning the public about private charity scams and ripoffs and sure enough, they missed this one. Meanwhile, the private sector has an entire cottage industry rating charities for overhead and accountability practices — so how would this one rate?

The matter was made even worse by the fact that it was a government operation, which suggests the money would be handled properly. But neither the government agency, nor the eight NGOs they handed the cash to for distribution could properly account for where the cash went.

How hard is it to keep a $1.99 ledger book of who got what gift card and simply fill it in before handing it out? For them, it was too much to ask.

The city auditor made his recommendations that the agencies account for their handouts, but that seems a little elementary, given that that was what they should have done in the first place. The agencies here should be made to pay back any amounts they cannot account for, and their slovenly leaders fired, if not investigated for theft or creating the conditions for theft and fraud, given that that was what the city auditor said this situation was “ripe” for. If not that, they should be decommissioned as charity distributors. If they couldn’t perform their jobs to just ordinary standards of accountability, why should the public ever trust the city again when a new appeal goes out? No wonder the billionaires, who tend to be savvier about these things, didn’t donate as much as the city wanted. As for the members of the ordinary public who donated, they just got rolled.

  10. hookers in ny are about to join illegals and the homeless in getting FREE healthcare–including DENTAL.
    FTA

Gov. Kathy Hochul’s administration is going to bat for the “world’s oldest profession” by launching a free health care program for sex workers — a move critics are slamming as encouraging a campaign to decriminalize prostitution, The Post has learned.

The state Health Department of Health has awarded $1 million in public funds combined over two years to two contractors as part of the new “sex worker health pilot program.”

Under the initiative, sex workers in New York City and western New York will be provided with primary, sexual and behavioral health care, as well as dental care.

What a strange thing to subsidize, because when you subsidize something, you get more of it. Tax something, get less of it, subsidize something, get more of it, it’s the law of economics.

Sure, there are pitiful cases in this subset of people. We all know that prostitutes are more subject to venereal diseases, drug abuse and certainly mental health problems given the demands of that lifestyle, meaning, their health care costs would be higher than average.

But New Yorkers, on average, pay some of the highest health care costs in the nation, clocking in at an average of $13,012 per person, according to Forbes, citing Forbes Advisor, and given the large numbers of indigents already getting a free ride in New York, that means anyone else is going to be paying a lot more than that based on how averages work. Illegals have just gotten a bill passed in the state Senate this past June for “free” health care, just for being here illegally. The homeless, too, have many resources for free health care. Now sex workers are about to get cut.

But as for the ordinary working-guy New Yorker, who pays some of the highest taxes and health care costs in the nation, they get nothing, except for but more bills, and even higher health care costs as state spending balloons on carve-outs like these.

It’s pretty bizarre to be incentivizing prostittution through free health care, including even free dental care. Why should prostitutes get special treatment, as if they were a special voting bloc. Prostitution is closely linked to human trafficking, so this may be a witting or unwitting gift to human traffickers, whose “stock” of humans will be improved, and thus more profitable for their “businesses” to encourage expansion.

Women who knew something was off but “didn’t think I could find anyone better,” “he had a good job and would take care of me and my kids,” “wanted a husband who would provide for me and give me a family and a home,” and on and on and on – more often than not, that is the case. SOMETHING was off, yet they CHOSE to settle…..that is not to say that many of these women don’t also have emotional “issues” of some type or another. I don’t believe that’s what marriage should be about either but you know there are women out there like that – they marry for the security, pure and simple. And that is selling themselves out….it’s got so I just can’t watch them any more and I just FF right thru it – same old story every single time! When they’re alive to tell it anyway….smh.

  12. “Computer chip with built-in human brain tissue gets military funding”
    By Loz Blain
    July 21, 2023

(“DishBrain” computer chips fusing human brain cells with electronic circuits and AI intelligence could underpin the next generation of learning robots AI-generated by Midjourney)

EXCERPT: “Last year, Monash University scientists created the “DishBrain” – a semi-biological computer chip with some 800,000 human and mouse brain cells lab-grown into its electrodes. Demonstrating something like sentience, it learned to play Pong within five minutes.

The micro-electrode array at the heart of the DishBrain was capable both of reading activity in the brain cells, and stimulating them with electrical signals, so the research team set up a version of Pong where the brain cells were fed a moving electrical stimulus to represent which side of the “screen” the ball was on, and how far away from the paddle it was. They allowed the brain cells to act on the paddle, moving it left and right.

Then they set up a very basic-reward system, using the fact that small clusters of brain cells tend to try to minimize unpredictability in their environment. So if the paddle hit the ball, the cells would receive a nice, predictable stimulus. But if it missed, the cells would get four seconds of totally unpredictable stimulation.

It was the first time lab-grown brain cells had been used this way, being given not only a way to sense the world, but to act on it, and the results were impressive. Impressive enough that the research – undertaken in partnership with Melbourne startup Cortical Labs – has now attracted a US$407,000 grant from Australia’s National Intelligence and Security Discovery Research Grants program.

These programmable chips, fusing biological computing with artificial intelligence, “in future may eventually surpass the performance of existing, purely silicon-based hardware,” says project lead, Associate Professor Adeel Razi.

“The outcomes of such research would have significant implications across multiple fields such as, but not limited to, planning, robotics, advanced automation, brain-machine interfaces, and drug discovery, giving Australia a significant strategic advantage,” he said.”

Leahy, CEO of The Star News Network, and the network’s parent company, Star News Digital Media Inc., are involved in a lawsuit to release the manifesto of transgender person Audrey Hale, who killed three students and three faculty members in March at a Nashville Christian school Hale had attended.

The person charged in connection with the death threat over the lawsuit, Michael Alonzo Rouse, 49, threatened Leahy July 9 via email, according to a source familiar with the matters.

In the email obtained by Just the News and signed by “Mike,” the writer says, “Michael Patrick Leahy … if it were not illegal to beat your ass up … I’d have done it months ago. I have called your show twice because you decided to pound home the transgender Audrey Hale while people who suffered were healing. You dirty potato eating Mick. [The Dossier has acquired an advance copy of TUCKER, the new authorized biography of Tucker Carlson, which is set to hit bookstores on August 1. The book is a fascinating read, truly a no holds barred biography, and a series of interviews that offers incredible insight into Tucker Carlson’s journey through life.]

According to Chadwick Moore, the author of TUCKER, Carlson now believes that it was “the greatest public mistake he ever made,” and “it would not take him long to realize how devastatingly wrong he’d been, or to begin trying to repair the damage.” In his meeting with President Trump, Carlson says he told the president that the coronavirus issue was so serious that “he could have easily lost the election over Covid.”

The former Fox News host was correct, but not in the way he once believed. Nonetheless, one month later, in April of 2020, Tucker was on the warpath. He was no longer concerned about a Flu-like illness, but about what the government was doing in the name of supposedly protecting people from one. He was soon “urging viewers to question all federal guidance on Covid, noting that in their alleged efforts to curb the pandemic, the authorities were moving to crush our most fundamental freedoms,” Moore writes.

Carlson remained defiant into the mRNA era, advising that “no one should get” the genetic injections developed by Pfizer and Moderna, the book recalls. In TUCKER, Carlson opens up about how his perspective changed so rapidly. “I assumed the CDC wouldn’t lie. I was wrong. Then they kept the weed dispensaries open but closed the churches,” Carlson explains. “Nobody I knew died from Covid. The only person I knew who did die, would die from the vax.”

“Being a total skeptic anyway, really just watching it all unfold, and its being so completely different from what they claimed it was going to be, that was enough,” he added.”

WOW – Story Changes: Barack and Michelle Obama WERE on Martha’s Vineyard When Their Private Chef Mysteriously Drowned

    https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2023/07/wow-barack-michelle-obama-were-marthas-vineyard-when/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=wow-barack-michelle-obama-were-marthas-vineyard-when

when you go to that article…it’s the Daily Mail that says otherwise:

The Daily Mail revealed Tuesday that Barack and Michelle were staying on the property when Campbell perished. Not surprisingly, the Obamas employees had a little trouble getting their facts straight.

Initially, the Obamas’ office said they were not home. Their office clarified on Monday that they were on the island, just not at the residence when Campbell drowned.

Adding to the mystery is that Jim Hoft reported earlier Tuesday that Campbell had taken swimming lessons as recently as 2019. This seemingly contradicts initial assumptions that he may have drowned due to an inability to swim.

    1. The video of him swimming was clearly a lesson and showed he had gotten the dog paddle down pat. At least, that’s what it looked and sounded like to me. So he wasn’t a good swimmer but DID know how to dog paddle….and it’s pretty universal now he wasn’t wearing a life vest….the biggest question I have is why the person who saw him go down didn’t go to help him???? Now THAT is a question that needs an answer, IMO…don’t you???

      1. I said that instantly…witnesses see him go under and no one attempts rescue?
        makes no sense.
obamas were not on the island, now they admit they were, but not at the property…having a sleepover somewhere else?
it’s just not adding up at all…

  19. “Anheuser-Busch Lobbyists Sell Access to Democratic Congressional Staff: The Bud Light maker owns a secret bar in Washington, D.C. for political insiders.”
    LEE FANG
    JUL 25, 2023

EXCERPT (from paid article): “Carefully hidden inside an otherwise nondescript office tower in the middle of Washington, D.C., with a sweeping view of Pennsylvania Avenue, there’s a secret bar just for political insiders. Last Thursday, I was promptly kicked out of it.

The lobbying division of Anheuser-Busch, the beer-making conglomerate that produces Bud Light, Michelob, and other brands, owns the bar. The invitation-only pub is off-limits to the public, and the event I briefly attended was an ethically-dubious influence-peddling operation. While fundraisers for lawmakers are everyday occurrences across the luxurious bars and restaurants that line Capitol Hill and Penn Quarter, this event was slightly different.

Political operatives desperate for cash are turning to brazenly pitching access to congressional staffers that manage the day-to-day work of members of Congress. Such was the case last week. The lobbyists at Anheuser-Busch offered their private bar to Elect Democratic Women PAC, a group that raised $7.8 million for the Democrats last year. The event was billed as a “Chiefs of Staff Happy Hour,” with tickets ranging from $500 to $5,000.

At the event, I took a picture of the sign-in list of the legislative staff for the event, which showed many Democratic staffers participating in the event:

    – Rebecca Walldorff, the chief of staff to Rep. Lucy McBath, D-Ga.
    – Caitlin-Jean Juricic, the legislative counsel to Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Tex.
    – Serena Gobbi, the legislative director to Rep. Norma Torres, D-Calif.
    – Sean Gard, chief of staff to Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisc.
    – Becky Salay, chief of staff to Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn.
    – John Gorczynski, chief of staff to Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Tex.
    – Sarah Curtis, chief of staff to Rep. Kathy Manning, D-N.C.

Experts say that the fundraiser tests the boundaries of ethics rules. “The solicitation of campaign contributions by the PAC with promises of meeting and mingling with “Chiefs of Staff” is a pay-for-access scheme that may well run afoul of congressional ethics rules,” said Craig Holman, a lobbying expert with Public Citizen.”

“Ukrainian tanks are running on Russian oil refined in Hungary and Turkey–Kyiv is almost completely dependent on fuel imports to maintain its war effort”
    July 25, 2023
    editor: REMIX NEWS author: HANDELSBLATT

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Ukraine’s tanks are increasingly running on oil that comes from Russia in what German newspaper Handelsblatt describes as a paradox of war. According to the Ukrainian customs authority, Kyiv is importing more and more diesel from Hungary and Turkey, both countries that process oil from Russia to a large extent in their refineries.

Although the market position of Hungary’s MOL Group and Turkish suppliers in Ukraine was already relatively good in the past, it was only recently that the Ukrainian customs authorities reported a striking increase in imports. For example, MOL, which is closely linked to the Hungarian state, doubled its sales to Ukraine in the past six months.

Since MOL purchases Russian oil to a large extent, it is now likely to be the main fuel for Ukraine’s war machinery. At the same time, companies that do not obtain their raw material from Russia are losing market share in Ukraine. This is because MOL has a competitive advantage over other European oil companies: It has an exemption from the European Union to continue supplying its refineries with Russian crude oil.

While Hungary’s special status has received little public attention, Turkey has long made no secret of the fact that it benefits greatly from oil imports from Russia. In principle, tanks can be refueled with different petroleum products. “Military engines are usually versatile and very tolerant when it comes to fuels,” said Polish military expert Damian Ratka.

The attacked country is almost completely dependent on fuel imports. Nevertheless, there is hardly any shortage in Ukraine, even though the Russian attacks on the energy supply have left their mark. For example, the West provided the country with numerous mobile diesel generators, especially last winter, in order to reliably supply hospitals and other public facilities with energy. This is because a decentralized supply is more crisis-proof than large power and heating plants, which can be relatively easily paralyzed by rocket fire.

Nevertheless, an adequate supply of diesel fuel is assured, as many companies in the war economy have scaled back their operations or are out of business altogether. Experts estimate that the consumption of petroleum products may have decreased by as much as 40 to 50 percent despite the enormous demand of the army.

This is also confirmed by Sergiy Kuyun, the director of the Kyiv consulting group A-95. He explained that the country is currently “particularly well positioned” in terms of energy supply. This is due to the fact that Ukraine has gained a large number of new supply routes since the beginning of the war.”
