Today is National UFO Day, and as I was researching the usual suspects, I came across a UFO Festival being held in McMinnville, Oregon.  And they are very serious about their ufo’s there, with good reason.  In 1950 a farmer in McMinnville captured photos of a flying disc that were never disproven to this day. I bring the story from the HOW&WHY’S website for your perusal.

Soon after World War II ended, Americans began seeing strange metallic objects in the sky that were sometimes hovering over their premises. Three years after the famous Kenneth Arnold sighting, a farming couple took the best shots of a 100-feet flying disc, hovering at a close distance from their farm about 10 miles from McMinnville, Oregon, the United States. Skeptics tried hard to prove the photograph a hoax but it was 100% authentic.

On May 11, 1950, Evelyn Trent went to her farm to finish her evening chores, she fed her chickens and rabbits. While walking back to her house, she saw a disc-shaped flying saucer, silently hovering over her farm. At around 7:45 p.m., she shouted to call her husband. Evelyn ran to the house and told her husband Paul to come out.

He also saw the strange craft that made no noise and there was no sign of propulsion. He quickly grabbed his Universal Roamer camera that came with 60mm roll film and took two shots of the object from different angles. There were only 30 seconds of time interval between the two photos.

Evelyn recalled: “It was like a good-sized parachute canopy without the strings, only silver-bright mixed with bronze. It was as pretty as anything I ever saw.” As shown below in the first image, the object appeared to be in the middle of the Trents’ garage and an electric pole. While in the second image, the object faded as it moved several yards away.

Paul could have made a fortune by selling these photos to the news agencies but he did nothing. It sounds crazy because during that time, newspapers would have bought them at a good price. The Trents were not looking for fame or publicity. Besides, they had heard stories about the secret government experimental aircraft and if it would be the one, they might get into trouble. 

Subsequently, when film rolls were processed and photographs came out, Paul showed them to his friends. Later, they were sent to the weekly newspaper in McMinnville and were published on the front page on June 8, 1950.

Interestingly, the photo contained no irregular lights, clouds nor weather balloons. It was the clear shot of the unidentified craft only if the Trents had not set it up. The farming couple seemed to be decent with honest behavior. It should be noted that the photos reached the newspaper only one month after they had been taken.

The photos became a great sensation in just a few weeks of publication. The story was picked up by International News Service and the Associated Press. On June 26, 1950, Life magazine, the most popular newspaper of that time, put the two iconic UFO images on its front page, making this case historical.

The Trents’ photo grabbed the attention of the FBI and the US Air Force. They had a visit from their investigators who took their photos, questioned them, and searched their field. Although the Trents were getting some attention and seemed to enjoy it, they wished it had never happened.

The story behind the film negatives is rather confusing as it splits into two versions. According to one version, the Trents gave the negatives to producers of the American talk show “‘We the People” from where they remained lost for 17 years. Another version comes from UFO historian Richard Dolan where he stated that the Air Force took the negatives and never returned them.

In the 1960s, when the US Air Force began its investigation into UFOs, the negatives of McMinnville UFO photographs were found in the file of United Press International. Later, the Condon Committee took charge of it.

Planetary scientist William K. Hartmann studied the negatives and found out that the craft was only a kilometer away from the field when being shot by Paul. Additionally, it was around 100 feet in diameter.

Hartmann wrote: “This is one of the few UFO cases in which all factors investigated, geometric, psychological, and physical appear to be consistent with the assertion that an extraordinary flying object, silvery, metallic, disc-shaped, tens of meters in diameter, and evidently artificial, flew within sight of two witnesses.”

Another credible source to prove the authenticity of the photos is an American optical physicist Dr. Bruce Maccabee who believed the Trents’ photos were real.

Paul Trent died in 1998, a year after his wife. He eventually just wanted to put the whole UFO thing behind them.

    1. We didn’t get much more rain, none of the rest at all. Quiet night, cool – it never got above 78 yesterday. 63 this morning and clear at this point. Looks like a mowing day for me, once it dries off a bit. Fox just showed their weather forecast – looks like more clouds in your area but the high heat and storms are moving SE, allegedly.

      GT was here waiting for his breakfast. I got up at 5:45 and looked out the bathroom window – sure enough, he was hunched down, waiting. I greeted him thru the window, which surprised him, then went to put his food dish out. He let me get within a few feet this time. Bit by bit….

They get here early in the morning – I made sure the jelly was ok before it got dark yesterday, yet when I checked this morning, after GT had eaten and left, it was almost empty again. ‘Course, the finches eat it, too, but still – there were 3 Orioles out there when I went to refill it. It’s too early for them to be starting their migration….I’m betting they’ll be back on your feeder soon enough!

  12. in a rush to promote, push, and provide solar power in CA, they are creating groundwater shortages in already limited water desserts. these clowns never plan and consider the future problems. building the solar farms requires a lot of water to limit the “dust” it creates and therefore in the building phase, these farms can drain limited water systems. without adequately measuring and monitoring groundwater basins, these farms are creating problems for surrounding communities. in their rush to put in these systems, they are ruining the water systems.

  14. dems want to impose term limits on SCOTUS now because they didn’t get their way. i think if they try this, it should go before SCOTUS–AND THE LIMIT ON PRESIDENTS. there cannot be three EQUAL branches, when one branch can limit the other 2. (and exclude themselves themselves from laws–where’s the equal protection???)

    Dear Amy: Four months before my daughter’s wedding, she told me that her uncle (my brother, “Dave”) would make her feel unsafe if he was a guest. She asked me not to invite him.

    My daughter is very politically progressive, as are many of her friends, and although she and Dave have always had a good relationship (I thought), he is a conservative voter and has supported candidates we all abhor.

    Dave has always been very nice, so my daughter’s request surprised me.

    I wrote Dave a very nice note, telling him that we would not be comfortable with him at the wedding and that he would not be invited.

    In the past, Dave has given family members wedding checks in excess of $1,000.

    She says she was counting on receiving the same type of gift.

    Please don’t tell me that I’m the one who started this by not inviting my brother to the wedding. After all, he’s a grown man, while my daughter is young and just starting out.

  36. This one struck home. Late last night, an animal dug under the chicken tractor (a mobile chicken coop), dragged out a chicken and had dinner. Most likely – not a fox but a raccoon, weasel or ermine This creature is a little too athletic for a fox. They/them crawled under the coop, climbed into the nest box up high, grabbed the chicken and dragged it out. As I knew animal predator was a risk, as I hadn’t put chicken wire on the bottom of the new coop yet – and gosh darn- it was a job I needed to take care of. So, I feel responsible. Today’s chores include moving the chickens back into their old coop to live with the peacock. Then at some point, retrofitting the chicken tractor – so that they can free range during the day.

    I hate is growing up poultry, only to feed the local predator population. It is not a “good feeling”. Chickens, as long as they aren’t stressed for space are gentle creatures – and I have a real soft spot for them. Such is life on the farm. Bad things do happen.

    Then there is Max the emu. He likes to cruz around while I work on Substack articles.



    The horror for me this morning was that for five minutes, I thought we lost Max too. See, Max has an almost pathological need to be with us or the dogs (guineas and chickens won’t do). Last night, Max went into the laundry room as usual, when we got home – with towels on the floor so he doesn’t slip and a baby gate. Well…, in his frantic desire to be with his “herd,” he jumped the baby gate (twice) and he wanted to be back outside again. So, Jill let him out for the night. He is getting to be a big bird – and holds his own with pretty much everything here on the farm.
    When I discovered the pile of feathers from the presumed dead chicken this morning, I was out calling for Max. He didn’t come immediately and the sadness was overwhelming. Going in to tell Jill that not only was a chicken gone, but so was Max was painful. Luckily, she went outside – called Max with a “beep-beep-beep” – which is his echolocation call, and he came running to greet her. His usual happy, if mouthy self.

    But no more outside for Max at night! We will have to find a new night solution for Max. I think Jill intends to try introducing him to the peacock and the chickens in the big coop… So, stay tuned. Poultry drama! It never ends…”
