Today I present Reason #5 on why I don’t go in the water: Things like THIS live there!

The Japanese spider crab is a giant crustacean that can grow up to 12.5 feet that is most commonly found on the Pacific side of Japan. At first glance, they look like ancient monsters that have crawled straight out of a sci-fi movie. However, in the marine community, they are known to be gentle giants. Understandably, their names are inspired by their resemblance to a well-known arachnid – spiders.

As a species of marine crab, these crabs are often found inhabiting holes and pits on the ocean floor between 160 – 2,000 feet in depth. Living at such deep depths and covered in a thorny protective exoskeleton, with 10 giant legs – these animals have few natural predators. They are omnivorous, and they diet on dead and decaying animals and plant matter on the sea bed. They may at times also eat live fish that come their way.

It has the largest leg-span out of all arthropods

They can have leg-spans wider than two full grown men. These long legs are covered in small spikes which are also known as tubercles.

The Japanese spider crab legs can grow up to 12 feet! in length. The largest ever caught was named ‘Crabzilla’, which was over 12 feet across and caught in the Pacific Ocean in 2019. It was exhibited at the Scheveningen Sea Life center in The Hague, Netherlands before moving to Paris.

Males are typically bigger and armed with larger claws

Males have larger claws, called chelipeds, to fend off predators and opposing crabs.  Females tend to have wider and rounder bodies to house their eggs.

They are scavengers

Japanese spider crabs are scavengers and often do not actively hunt for prey. They prefer to scour the ocean floor for dead animals or plants.

In Japan, they are considered to be a culinary delicacy

The savory meat contained in the long legs of Japanese spider crabs are enjoyed by many in Japan. During breeding season, fishing is prohibited so that an adequate number of crabs can be maintained in the ecosystem.

Japanese spider crabs like to dress up

This species belongs to a group of crabs termed “decorator crabs” which have been observed decorating their shells with sponges, plants, and anemones.  This ornamentation allows them to camouflage and blend in with their environment, protecting them from predators and other threats.

Their legs can regenerate

Due to their length and spiny attachments, the legs of Japanese spider crabs may get torn off when caught in fishing nets or by predators. These limbs can regrow when the crab goes through a molting cycle.

They can lay up to 1.5m eggs at a time!

However, only a few survive to hatch. Those that do survive hatch approximately 10 days after and are approximately 0.03 inches in size.

They go through a larval stage

Japanese spider crabs go through a larval stage after hatching and before maturing into adults. In this phase, they do not appear structurally similar to adults. They are transparent and legless.

There is a limit as to how large their bodies can grow

The carapace, or hard upper shell, of Japanese spider crabs cap at a particular size once it reaches adulthood. Their legs, however, keep on growing and elongating.

They molt to grow

Like other crustaceans, Japanese spider crabs shed their exoskeletons—through a process called molting—as they grow. Enzymes and physical force help the crab separate from its shell. Immediately following, the soft vulnerable bodies of the crab are exposed and require about a week’s time to harden up again.

Females have “aprons”

Female Japanese crab abdomens have also been termed “aprons”. This area is where she carries her fertilized eggs. Fertilization is internal. Males insert a sperm packet into the female while their abdomens are in close proximity.

They mate and spawn in shallower waters

While adults tend to live at deeper depths (as low as 2,000 feet), Japanese spider crabs will migrate to shallower waters during their mating season which is normally between January and April.

They are gentle giants

Despite their intimidating and spiky appearance, these crabs are quite calm and slow in nature. They do not hunt and spend the majority of their time crawling around, searching for their next meal.

Their Japanese name translates to “long-legged crab”

The Japanese name for this species of crab is ‘taka-ashi-gani’, which translates into “long-legged crab”.

It may have the longest live span among crabs

Commonly known crabs—such as Dungeness crabs, king crabs, and snow crabs—live for several decades (between 10 to 30 years). Japanese spider crabs have been proposed to possess the longest lifespan of any crab—surviving for up to 100 years.

      My mom makes a wonderful (according to everyone else) crab salad. I will get her recipe and post it. I am not a fish lover–tuna and Gorton’s…lol…that’s it!

    1. We got more rain overnight, altho it wasn’t the thunderstorms they predicted – still….rain is rain! Temp at 66 at the moment but the predictions say it will get up to 90 later today…we’ll see. Gotta get geared up for my trip to Norfolk and Mom’s….

    This is insane! The indictment references the tape as if it’s the predicate for the entire investigation. The news media want you to think the tape is proof he’s guilty, but it’s all just PR.

    By refusing to appoint a special counsel to investigate Biden family corruption, Garland conveniently avoids having to issue mandated reports to the public and Congress (such as on the sham Hunter agreement).

    With the new whistleblower report, we now have sworn evidence that US Attorney Weiss said he asked for but was denied special counsel status by Garland DOJ. Garland denies this outright.

    But prior NYTIMES report suggests that Garland is being misleading. Last week, in response to my @JudicialWatch
    criticism of Garland’s failure to appoint a special counsel, the NYTIMES reported: “Mr. Garland never seriously considered appointing a special counsel, in part because they were not deemed necessary in prior investigations of presidential family members, according to a former law enforcement official familiar with the case.”

    Besides being dishonest (“Special Counsel” Mueller investigated Trump’s family!), the leak suggests that Garland had been asked and rejected a special counsel request.

    Perhaps an impeachment inquiry will clear this issue up.

    When you’re Trump you’re not allowed publicly defend yourself or talk about details of your case but if you’re on Jack Smith’s team you can leak former president’s private conversations to CNN.

    When you’re Trump you can be impeached on lies concocted by your opposition but when you’re Biden and mountains of evidence point out that you took bribes from CCP you get media fighting on your behalf.

    When you’re Trump and possess declassify documents you’re a traitor but when you’re Biden and get caught having classified documents in a building funded by CCP it’s not such a big deal.

    When you’re Trump and prove that you use loopholes to pay less taxes you’re considered a criminal but when you’re Hunter Biden and commit tax evasion you get slapped on the wrist and being feel sorry for.

The Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court of Manhattan terminated a large portion of the case. In conjunction with the DOJ and others, this HOAX is all about Election Interference pertaining to the 2024 Presidential Election. This is a case that never should have been brought.     1. And THIS Mom would have been in the principal’s office promptly to object to the expulsion and punishment!!! I did it for HB when a gal attacked her at her wall locker and SHE got expelled for fighting back – took it all the way to the Supervisor level! HB still ended up with in-school suspension – which she actually liked because there were fewer distractions and pupils misbehaving. The biggie was the Valentines’ Day Dance – they weren’t going to let her attend but I put a stop to that!

      Oh, and, since the gal lived within a couple of miles of us, I also made a little visit to her Mom – we had a GOOD chat!!! Needless to say, that little bitch didn’t bother MY daughter again!

I ‘m going to tell you a few things about Federal Trials … indictments are mostly bullshit .. Government agents are often mentally ill .. Prosecutors will seriously make up shit .. Government witnesses are nearly always threatened with “if you don’t testify we’re going to Fvck you up too” .. Never believe not one single thing you see hear or read about Trump and this case for the next 2 years. You’d be surprised what “witnesses” will say and do to keep the DOJ happy … the most important thing I learned is patience.. slowly but surely the truth prevails .. God is good, and then you are free!

    EXCERPT: “The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has received final federal approval for its congestion pricing plan that would charge tolls to motorists driving below 60th Street in Manhattan. The Federal Highway Administration confirmed on Monday that, after an analysis of the plan and a review of public comments, it had determined the plan would cause no adverse environmental impact for the region.

    The plan, the first of its kind in the country, is intended to reduce congestion in Manhattan’s central business district. It could take effect as early as April. The plan would charge cars with an E-ZPass up to $24 for driving below 60th Street during peak hours. Those without an E-ZPass could face tolls of up to $34.50.

    In 2019, the MTA awarded a $507 million contract for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the new tolling system.”
