Animal Dads: The Best & The Worst

The Best:

Penguins

Male Emperor penguins are among the best fathers. When the female penguin lays her egg, she leaves it in the care of dad while she goes in search of food. Male penguins keep the egg safe from the icy cold elements of the Antarctic biome by keeping them nestled between their feet and covered with their brood pouch (feathery skin). The males may have to care for the eggs without eating themselves for as long as two months. Should the egg hatch before the female returns, the male feeds the chick and continues to protect it until mom returns.

Seahorses

Male seahorses take fatherhood to a whole new level. They actually birth their young. Males have a pouch on the side of their bodies in which they fertilize eggs deposited by their female mate. A female seahorse can deposit thousands of eggs in the male’s pouch. The male seahorse creates a favorable environment within the pouch that is optimal for the proper development of the eggs. Dad cares for the babies until they are fully formed, which can take as long as 45 days. The male then releases the tiny babies from his pouch into the surrounding aquatic environment.

Frogs and Toads

Most male frogs and toads play a vital role in the development of their young. Male phantasmal poison-dart frogs guard the eggs laid by females after mating. As the eggs hatch, the resulting tadpoles will use their mouths to climb onto their dad’s back. The male frog gives the tadpoles a “piggy-back” ride to a nearby pond where they can continue to mature and develop. In other species of frog, the male will protect the tadpoles by keeping them in their mouths. Male midwife toads care for and protect the string of eggs laid by the females by wrapping them around their hind legs. The males care for the eggs for a month or longer until they can find a safe body of water in which to deposit the eggs.

Water Bugs

Male giant water bugs ensure the safety of their young by carrying them on their backs. After mating with a female, the female lays her eggs (up to 150) on the back of the male. The eggs remain tightly attached to the male until they are ready to hatch. The male giant water bug carries the eggs on his back to ensure that they are kept safe from predators, mold, parasites, and to keep them aerated. Even after the eggs hatch, the male continues to care for his young for as long as two years.

And the WORST:

Grizzly Bears

much of their time alone in the forest, except when it is time for mating. Female grizzly bears tend to mate with more than one male during mating season and cubs from the same litter sometimes have different fathers. After mating season, the male continues his solitary life and leaves the female with the responsibility of raising any future cubs. In addition to being an absentee dad, male grizzlies will sometimes kill and eat cubs, even their own. Therefore, mother grizzlies become fiercely protective of their cubs when a male is near and tend to avoid males altogether when caring for young.

Assassin Bugs

Male assassin bugs actually protect their young after mating. They guard the eggs until they hatch. In the process of guarding the eggs however, the male will eat some of the eggs around the perimeter of the egg grouping. This action is considered a defense mechanism that protects the eggs in the center of the brood from parasites. It also provides the male with nutrients as he must forgo finding food while guarding the eggs. The male assassin bug abandons his young once hatched. The young assassin bugs are left to fend for themselves as female assassin bugs die soon after laying their eggs.

Sand Goby Fish

Male sand goby fish construct nests on the seabed to attract mates. After mating, they carefully tend to the eggs and hatchings when females are around. The males keep the nest clean and fan the eggs with their fins to ensure the young have a better chance of survival. These animal fathers however, have a tendency to eat some of the eggs in their care. Eating the larger eggs shortens the time that the males must guard their young as the larger eggs take more time to hatch than smaller ones. Some males behave even worse when females are not around. They leave their nests unattended and some even devour all of the eggs.

Lions

Male lions fiercely protect their pride from dangers on the savanna, such as hyenas and other male lions. They do not however, participate much in the rearing of their cubs. They spend most of their time sleeping while the female lions hunt and teach the cubs skills needed for survival. Male lions typically hog the food and the females and cubs can go hungry in times when prey is scarce. While male lions don’t typically kill their own cubs, the have been known to kill cubs from other males when they take over a new pride.

Happy Father’s Day to all our fathers out there!

Under new rules for the Academy Awards, no film can win Best Picture unless it hits arbitrary diversity quotas. Under this rule, The Godfather, Lord of the Rings, or Saving Private Ryan would all be ineligible.

This is what they mean by “diversity” but it’s the opposite of diversity. They want a uniform, politically correct monoculture devoid of any creativity or free expression.

“UPS workers vote to strike, setting stage for biggest walkout since 1959”
    BY IRINA IVANOVA
    UPDATED ON: JUNE 16, 2023 / 7:57 PM / MONEYWATCH

EXCERPT: “UPS workers are gearing up for a potential strike that would be the biggest U.S. labor walkout since the 1950s.

Members of the Teamsters union, which represents about 340,000 workers at the package delivery company, voted overwhelmingly on Friday to strike if no agreement is reached with UPS by the time the current contract expires on July 31.

“If this multibillion-dollar corporation fails to deliver on the contract that our hardworking members deserve, UPS will be striking itself,” Teamsters President Sean O’Brien said in a statement. “The strongest leverage our members have is their labor and they are prepared to withhold it to ensure UPS acts accordingly.”

  7. This is one of the counties where voter fraud was recorded…very close to Lincoln, almost a suburb. Funny how that so-called NE law preventing this doesn’t apply when it comes to personal property tax on your home!!!

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “In case you haven’t noticed, I detest civil asset forfeiture with the fire of a thousand burning suns. This story illustrates precisely why we should all despise this practice, which is one of the most glaring examples of tyranny that most don’t know about.

I came across a report by the Flatwater Free Press detailing how a 24-mile stretch of Interstate 80 in Nebraska has gained notoriety for its frequent traffic stops that result in cash seizures without charges or convictions. Seward County’s sheriff’s department has aggressively employed civil asset forfeiture, despite a state law banning the practice, making it a major source of revenue for the county. Critics like myself argue that civil asset forfeiture allows law enforcement to target innocent individuals, instead of focusing on drug kingpins, and poses a threat to due process.

For those unaware, civil asset forfeiture is a legal process that allows law enforcement agencies to seize and keep property, including cash, vehicles, and other assets, that they suspect are connected to criminal activity. It often occurs without the need for a criminal conviction or even charging the property owner with a crime.

The Free Press’ report began by detailing the story of Christopher Bouldin, who was shaken down by police who extorted him for his money during a traffic stop: ‘In August 2020, flashing police lights stopped Christopher Bouldin’s van on this short ribbon of road as he headed west through Seward County. Within minutes, Bouldin found himself standing with his dog on the westbound shoulder. Seward County deputies had just found $18,000 in cash rolled up in a blue sleeping bag in his backseat. It’s drug money, they alleged. It’s money for my trip to Colorado, Bouldin responded.

There, on the side of the road, 1,300 miles from his Virginia home, in a state where Bouldin knew no one, a sheriff’s deputy handed him a form. You can sign this piece of paper, abandon the $18,000, avoid arrest and continue on to Colorado, he says he was told. Don’t sign, and you will go to jail. You could face felony charges. Your van will be towed. Your dog will be taken to the pound.

“They were trying really hard for me to sign that,” Bouldin said.’

The report notes that that situation “started when Bouldin got pulled over for following too closely.” The officer asked if he could search the civilian’s van. After Bouldin refused, the officer summoned a drug-sniffing dog, which are often used to manufacture probable cause allowing police to search people’s vehicles without consent. Spoiler alert: there were no drugs or weapons in Bouldin’s car.

Unfortunately, Bouldin is one of many individuals who have been targeted driving through Seward County. In fact, the county has raked in $7.5 million over the past five years:

‘Here, money is routinely seized without anyone being charged or proven guilty of anything. The sheriff’s department has specialized in and perfected the practice, known as civil asset forfeiture, despite a 2016 law meant to ban it in Nebraska.

One out of every three civil forfeiture cases in Nebraska’s state courts happens in Seward County, according to a Flatwater Free Press analysis of a decade of court records and a data request provided by the Nebraska Judicial Branch. Nearly all begin when a Seward deputy stops a driver on I-80. Nearly all involve an out-of-state driver. And nearly all the seized money ends up in police hands, after drivers – faced with a split-second choice between money or jail – sign the form and abandon their cash.’

The county has used its cut of the plunder to buy stun guns, a sheriff’s cruiser, a drone, ballistic shields, and a plethora of other goodies. Officers typically take their ill-gotten gains by pressuring motorists to sign a form indicating that the civilian is willingly giving up their money or property to law enforcement. They do so under the threat of being taken to prison and charged with felonies. In essence, the officer offers to let them go in exchange for taking the money they confiscate as payment.

Does this not sound like a government official requesting a bribe? The Free Press detailed a slew of other victims of government-sponsored extortion theft who had similar stories to Bouldin’s:

‘But another driver, Kenan, pulled over by Vance in 2019, said the interaction felt more like “extortion.” He was pulled over in 2019 with a small amount of drugs and $5,477.

Kenan told the Flatwater Free Press that, like Bouldin, he was given two choices: Be charged with two felonies and taken to a county jail 1,000 miles from home, or surrender the money and sign a form admitting guilt – a choice he believed would make it impossible to fight for the money later. He agreed to be quoted using only his first name because he’s now in college and looking for a job.

“He told me if I worked with him, then I wasn’t going to get in any trouble…as long as we signed a paper saying the money wasn’t ours, he would let us leave and drop the charges,” he told the Flatwater Free Press. “I didn’t want a felony charge in Nebraska. It seemed like a good deal to me.”

Civil asset forfeiture is already abusive enough. But Seward County has taken this form of tyranny to a whole new level in how it has employed the practice. Many of those caught up in their extortion racket had no contraband on them. Some only had small amounts of weed or other narcotics. To be fair, law enforcement claims that they have caught human traffickers and suspected murderers on the Interstate. While this is a positive use of government resources, it is a deflection from the fact that they are actively robbing people who are undeserving of such treatment.

If you or I engaged in this behavior, we would be labeled as robbers and thieves, and thrown into cages. Yet, when one has a uniform, gun and badge, apparently this type of conduct is acceptable. Many states have passed legislation rolling back or doing away with civil asset forfeiture. Nebraska has too, but Seward County has found a loophole. The state legislature should address this issue to prevent more robberies from being committed by its boys in blue.”

  10. “New opportunities are afoot for those dreaming of fixing up a rural idyll far from the chaos of modern life. Ireland has just announced a scheme to revitalize more than 20 of the idyllic islands that lie off its western seaboard, including Inis Mór, whose breathtaking landscape you might recognize from the Hollywood hit “The Banshees of Inisherin,” as well as 10 Irish-speaking Gaeltacht islands.

Increased grants of up to €84,000 (nearly $92,000) will soon be offered to people willing to refurbish vacant or derelict homes and then live in them, with Vacant Home Officers now on the case to identify eligible properties. Would-be islanders should be aware that while there are no restrictions on who can buy property in Ireland, owning a place doesn’t guarantee you the right to live there.

The government website has the latest details on the Our Living Islands policy and the existing refurbishment scheme. The full article with links to the information is here:” https://www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/ireland-will-pay-you-90000-to-move-to-a-beautiful-island-home/

  15. YET ANOTHER green boondoggle…solar companies going bankrupt in CA without completing the job leaving the customer without good options. other solar companies don’t watch to touch another companies equipment and stuff…
how much taxpayers $$ did this solar company receive???
    entire article
The solar industry in California has experienced several high-profile bankruptcies including one of its largest producers, Petersen Dean.

Now, another local solar company has shuttered, leaving homeowners with unfinished systems on roofs that aren’t producing any power, not saving money on utility bills, and often there’s still the financing of the equipment and installation that the customer is responsible for.

In Compton, Angela Dorsey’s 83-year-old mother had panels installed on her home’s roof, but they aren’t producing any power. Dorsey said the installer, Harness Power, gave them a timeframe on the contract saying the solar will be up by July 2022, and in full operation by September.

Nearly 10 months later, Harness Power is out of business, shutting its doors in the spring without warning and Dorsey’s mother Theresa is supposed to soon start making payments on the $32 thousand system.

“I don’t think it’s fair for me to pay a company that didn’t finish the job,” said Theresa.

Harness Power has a slew of negative reviews on Yelp with customers being left with inoperable solar systems. One review reads ” We got to the finish line right before they went out of business,” while another reads, “They took my down payment seven days before they closed their doors.”

Another Harness Solar customer in Orange County was left with $70,000 in panels on her roof that don’t work. “There’s the cost of the financial pieces of it, but the stress of all the rest of it too- it’s been a lot,” said Stephanie Foults, solar customer.

Foults said she had tried to get another solar contractor to finish the job, but most don’t want to touch the equipment that isn’t theirs.

“I think that’s been the most frustrating part, trying to figure out the next step when no one will help you with the next step,” said Foults.

Josh Bushwell Charco with the California Solar and Storage Association said it’s an unfortunate circumstance, but there are steps consumers can take. He said first off, notify the lending company that the job isn’t complete.

“See if there can be either a delay on payment or forgiveness on payment,” said Bushwell. He said customers can also file a complaint with the Contractors State License Board, and attach to the business’s bond — but that is only worth $25,000, and is not much when split amongst a number of people.

Lastly, a complaint can also be filed with the California Solar and Storage Association. “And while we can’t make any promises, we do our best to mediate disputes between contractors and customers,” said Bushwell.

Harness Power released the following statement:

After serving our customers for 6 years, we announced earlier this year the regrettable closure of Harness Power due to insurmountable financial challenges. We recognize and understand the distress our closure caused our customer base. We have actively sought to find resolutions for those whose projects remain unfinished. Through social media postings or via email, we have communicated several alternate paths to resolution that are available through their finance companies and local contractors who can support them moving forward. For those who financed their project, we have recommended they reach out to their respective finance company to explore resolution, and have worked with Administrators of these companies to facilitate support. We wish to express gratitude to our customers for their trust over the years and are distraught that we are unable to continue serving them.

EXCERPT: “West Texas heat is deadly. It seems to be getting worse year after year. Texas has been experiencing record heat waves this week. Working outside when the heat index is above 110 is deadly. According to data analysis by The Texas Tribune, last year in Texas, there were 279 heat-related deaths in the state, the most since 1999.

This seems like the perfect time for the State of Texas to pass laws mandating water breaks for workers required to work in the heat. Yet, this week Governor Abbott signed a law doing just the opposite. The Governor signed House Bill 2127, which will go into effect on September 1. This bill will nullify any local city ordinances that require water breaks for employees who work in the heat and prevent any local jurisdiction in the state from passing such laws in the future.

This law has been called the “Death Star” law because it prevents any local city or county government in the state from passing laws that contradict anything in Texas state code in areas like agriculture, business and commerce, finance, insurance, labor, local government, natural resources, occupations, and poverty.”
