WORLD OTTER DAY

World Otter Day occurs on the last Wednesday of May, which is May 31 this year. Otters are beautiful, playful animals that live in wetlands across the world. Species are declining due to habitat destruction, reduction of prey, roadkill, and illegal trade for fur and as pets.

There are 13 different species, 12 of which are disappearing. Seven of these species are classified as vulnerable and five are endangered. The International Otter Survival Fund founded World Otter Day with two goals in mind. First, to help raise awareness of the dangers that otters face. Second, to educate people on how to protect their habitats.

HISTORY OF WORLD OTTER DAY

World Otter Day had humble beginnings as Otterly Mad Week, a week of events, education, and fun. Then International Otter Awareness Day was founded before becoming the International Otter Survival Day, then World Otter Day, whose singular purpose is to ensure that future generations can enjoy these charming animals.

International Otter Survival Fund began in 1993 to protect and help the different species of otters worldwide. It was inspired by observing otters in their natural habitats. The Fund is one of the world’s leading charities with various projects that protect otters. They have dedicated over 20 years of research to conserving, protecting, and caring for otters and have developed a worldwide program to encourage education on otters.

To date, they have supported projects in 44 countries and helped cubs in 33 countries.

Since 2009, they held workshops across the world in places such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and China. The workshops provide training in otter field techniques, public awareness programs, law enforcement, and general conservation issues. Some other activities include research, campaigns, training, and otter hospitals.

5 FACTS ABOUT OTTERS

1. Most of them live in Alaska: About 90% of all sea otters live on the coast of Alaska.

Alaska Otters Rebound

2. They have their own tools. Otters use rocks to open clams and carry them around in case they are needed.

3. They are amazing at holding their breath. Sea otters can hold their breath for five minutes and river otters can hold theirs for eight.

4. They have a thick fur. Sea otters lack any blubber, so their thick, dense, water-resistant fur keeps them warm.

5. Their dung tells a story. Scientist believe they may be able to determine the sex, age, and reproductive status of an otter just by studying it’s dung.

WHY WORLD OTTER DAY IS IMPORTANT

Otters are cute. We don’t need too much convincing to spend the day learning about them. They are the cutest, quirky, furry animals.

Conservation is always a plus. World Otter Day focuses on teaching people about the conservation of our planet and our wildlife.

It’s a worthwhile global cause. Otters are found all over the world. They are also celebrated in over 20 different countries.

      1. Good morning! Sally’s Dad is improving a bit. He came into the hospital with a UTI and CV19. Both of those can cause disorientation and delirium. The MRI showed – and no sign of stroke! Hopefully the hospital and doctors will chose beneficial therapies and not the opposite. I’m in town, came yesterday to get yard work done and pick up mail, etc. Hope to go by and see him if that is allowed.

Both daughter and SIL have CV19 as well. Granddaughter hasn’t gotten it so far.

I plan to go back to the Village today unless they need me. I have taught Sally Q’s primary aide how to give her Lantus long-acting insulin shot, in case I have to be here overnight.

How are you and your DH and things in the deep woods of PA?

we also have to stop by my son’s place and drop off our augur–they’re putting in a fence (for the dog) and they want to have breakfast on Sunday…run, run, run this weekend…lol
that’s great news about Sally’s Dad.

  1. Morning All!
we were watching a large fox this morning. he came thru the woods on the far side of the house and made his way across the front yard and then up to the garden and then into the thicket there and then he went down by the pond.
bigger than we’ve seen before–gorgeous tail!

      1. this one is very active!
one spring, when we came home from shopping, a mama and a fawn where in the middle of the driveway and the baby was laying down. she kept trying to coax it to move.
we shut off the car so she wouldn’t panic too much and she got the fawn up–it walked a few feet then plopped back down.
we didn’t move–just let her keep nudging and prodding till they got off the driveway and into the woods before we started the Jeep and went back to the house.

            1. Sadly, about the only time I see them is on the roads and all too often, they are dead. Nebraskans learn early to be wary on the roads during hunting and breeding seasons from sunset to dawn. A few years ago, I was leaving Michael’s house just after sunset and, just as I was getting up to speed, a herd of them started across the highway. I was able to brake and wait until they crossed, thankfully. Had I been going highway speed, that would have very unlikely.

every morning when hubby was still driving to work, he’d come across deer, rabbit, bear, porkies, skunks and opossums on the road…it was always an obstacle course.

              2. The benefit here is that it is mostly flat, so with enough light, you can often see them coming. And even after dark, as long as you keep your eyes open and scan the sides of the road, you can see the light reflecting in their eyes. It’s almost always a group of at least 4-5 or more. Where there’s one, there will be two – a NE rule! LOL – as for the coons, cats, possums, etc., they come scuttling onto the road at random – there is no preparing for those! If it’s a coon, farmers will speed up and try to hit them….it’s the way life is in farm country. They are truly varmints in every way!

  7. “Do You Remember What Happened The Last Time The US Debt Limit Was Suspended? Clue – It begins with a ‘Co’ and ends with a ‘vid’

    NE – NAKEDEMPEROR.SUBSTACK.COM
    MAY 30, 2023

EXCERPT: “Before I start, let me explain two concepts for those that are new to the subject – US Debt Limit Suspension & The Repo Market.

U.S. Debt Limit Suspension: The U.S. debt limit, also known as the debt ceiling, is the total amount of money that the United States government is authorised to borrow to meet its existing legal obligations. This includes Social Security and Medicare benefits, military salaries, interest on the national debt, tax refunds, and other payments. The debt limit does not authorise new spending commitments; it simply allows the government to finance existing legal obligations that Congress and presidents of both parties have made in the past.

The Repo Market: A repo, or repurchase agreement, is short-term borrowing for dealers in government securities. The dealer sells the government securities to investors, usually on an overnight basis, and buys them back the following day. Repos are typically used to raise short-term capital but are also used by the Federal Reserve to conduct monetary policy.

Over the last few days, details of a US debt ceiling deal have hit the headlines. At the weekend, Joe Biden and House speaker, Kevin McCarthy, agreed to suspend the debt limit. In its place will be an unlimited debt ‘ceiling’ until January 2025. So no ceiling then.

The debt limit was last suspended in August 2019, allowing the U.S. government to borrow an unlimited amount until a specified date. A month later, in September 2019, the “repo crisis” occurred. It was characterised by a sudden spike in the overnight lending rate in the repo market, which jumped to nearly 10% from the usual band of around 2%.

So, how was the suspension of the U.S. debt limit in August 2019 connected to the repo market crisis a month later?

When the U.S. debt ceiling was suspended, the Treasury started issuing more bonds to rebuild its cash balance which had run down while the debt ceiling was in place. This caused an increase in the supply of bonds in the market.”

A mother swan taken from Manlius was killed and eaten on Memorial Day, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

Manlius police said on Tuesday that the swan had been killed and announced three people were charged.

Eman Hussan, 18, of Syracuse was arrested in connection with the killing of Faye, the mother swan, said Manlius police Sgt. Ken Hatter. A 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, both from Syracuse, were also arrested, he said.

“I just didn’t want to walk home and walk into a cage or be killed, which is basically my two choices,” Reade told Sputnik. “[The decision to go to Russia] was very difficult. I’m not an impulsive person. I really take my time and sort of analyze data points. And from what I could see based on the cases and based on what was happening and sort of the push for them to not want me to testify, I felt that while this election is gearing up and there’s so much at stake, I’m almost better off here and just being safe. My dream is to live in both places, but it may be that I only live in this place and that’s okay.”

(from a tweet earlier in May 2023)
I want to make something clear. If something happens to me, all roads lead to Joe Biden.

Joe Biden and DNC political machine threats, bullying and intimidation over the last three years will not work.

I am not suicidal. I should not be under investigation nor am I a foreign agent. I am a private citizen. I was a former staffer of Joe Biden’s that has chosen to step forward to tell the truth. The tactics using intimidation and bullying to silence me and suppress me using DOJ and FBI and social media will not work. Leave me alone. I will testify under oath in Congress if asked to do so and tell what happened and what I know. The Biden corruption must end. Period Thank you [Marjorie Taylor Greene] and [Matt Gaetz] for inviting me to testify and caring about the truth!

In the report, Senator Paul details a whopping $482,276,543,907 of waste in 2022.

How do you think the over half a million homeless Americans would feel about our spending $2,100,000 to encourage Ethiopians to wear shoes (NIH)? $50,000,000 to boost the Tunisia travel sector during COVID-19 (USAID)? $1,700,000,000 to maintain 77,000 empty Federal buildings (GSA)? Or, how about the $17,000,000 spent on unused hotel rooms for illegal immigrants (DHS) and the $168,000,000 spent to help illegal immigrants avoid deportation (DHS)?

I’m not homeless, but it makes me furious!

What do you think the millions of food-insecure would think about our spending $210,069,000 on basic education projects in Jordan (USAID); $3,000,000 to construct a Gandhi museum, or $1,100,000 for training mice to binge drink alcohol (NIH)?

  13. Interesting…Lloyd’s is a biggie, I think…..

“Lloyd’s Becomes Latest Firm To Exit UN’s Net-Zero Alliance”
    BY TYLER DURDEN
    MONDAY, MAY 29, 2023 – 03:00 AM

Authored by Naveen Anthrapully via The Epoch Times,

EXCERPT: “Insurance company Lloyd’s of London has announced its exit from a net-zero alliance for insurers – the sixth such organization to have pulled out from the initiative within a week.

The Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA), convened by the United Nations, seeks to commit group members, composed of the world’s leading insurers and reinsurers, to fighting climate change. As part of this, members have to transition their insurance and reinsurance underwriting portfolios to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. On Friday, Lloyd’s of London quit the NZIA. This took the total number of members who have quit NZIA this week alone to six, which represents a fifth of the organization’s total of 30 members. Since March, a total of 10 members have quit NZIA.

The exodus of major insurance companies has raised questions about NZIA’s viability. None of the six firms that quit this week have made it clear why they left the initiative.

The insurance firms are said to have decided to pull out due to concerns about getting embroiled in disputes about net-zero initiatives in the United States. On May 15, attorneys generals from 23 American states sent a letter to 28 insurance companies asking for information about potential violations of antitrust laws.

Violating Antitrust Laws — In the letter, state AGs asked the firms to provide information regarding their membership in climate associations like the NZIA and the Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA), which is also sponsored by the United Nations.

“The insurance companies that are involved with this net zero program are, quite frankly, out on a plank, and they’ve sawed it off,” Robert Bork Jr., president of the Antitrust Education Project, said in an interview with The Epoch Times.

“The Sherman [Antitrust] Act is pretty explicit about restraint of trade, which is exactly what they’re doing here by denying insurance to companies that they think aren’t doing the right thing when it comes to climate change and getting to a net zero future.”

  14. EXCERPT: “U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy recently released an advisory titled “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation.” It warns that social isolation is a major public health problem. The 81-page document presents six government-directed “pillars” of action to address the health hazards of social isolation.

On the surface, these six directives may look innocuous, but they present a clear and present danger to the autonomy of our private lives and relationships. The project is potentially so massive in scope that it’s not an overstatement to say it threatens to regulate our freedom of association in ways we never could have imagined.

Let’s look in greater depth at those pillars and the risks they pose.

‘Building a Social Infrastructure’ — The first stated goal is to “strengthen social infrastructure in local communities.” It defines “social infrastructure” as the regular events and institutions that make up community life, and says the federal government should both fund local organizations and direct how they’re structured, including their locations. This can only mean that all local communities must answer to the federal bureaucracy in the quest to strengthen social connections among people.

Social infrastructure, the report says, includes physical parts of a community, such as housing, libraries, parks and recreation spaces, transport systems, and so forth. The report expresses concern that some people have better access to such locations than other people, and recommends federal interventions.

Those are likely to be used to promote densified housing along the lines of the “15-minute city” (more accurately termed 15-minute ghettoes), as well as the eventual dismantling of single-family housing. The goal of replacing private vehicles with public transportation fits easily into this scheme too.”

  16. Tee-hee….oh, yeah, ConRon fought Disney to a standstill???? I DON’T THINK SO!!!

ENTIRE ARTICLE @ BB: “The Walt Disney Co. is still planning to invest billions of dollars in Florida despite its ongoing legal battle with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) that originated over the state’s anti-grooming law protecting school children from LGBTQ indoctrination.

At a recent conference, Disney parks chief Josh D’Amaro reportedly said the company is still looking to expand or enhance existing attractions at Disney World in Orlando to the tune of $17 billion. D’Amaro was speaking last week at the the J.P. Morgan Global Technology, Media and Communications Conference in Boston, according to a CNBC report. He told audience members that the $17 billion investment “gives you a sense of how aggressive we’re being in Walt Disney World.”

“And this includes things like the transformation of Epcot,” he said. “It includes things like there’s a new Star Tours attraction coming, we have a new Tiana attraction that’s coming. So, we’re thinking pretty aggressively about where we can take things in Florida.”

Among the coming attractions is a Moana -themed exhibit called “The Journey of Water,” which will be a self-guided outdoor trail where “you can play and interact with water as it travels from the sky to the oceans and back again,” according to Disney. The attraction is set to open later this year at Epcot.

As Breitbart News reported, Gov. DeSantis defended his fight with Disney on the day of his presidential campaign launch. “Florida stands for the protection of children,” he said. “We believe jamming gender ideology in elementary school is wrong. Disney obviously supported injecting gender ideology in elementary school.”

  21. OK then – if I get the package to the PO by 2:30 today, I can ship the 3 cantaloupe seedlings to my Sis quickly. They want $30 for guaranteed next-day and they just aren’t worth that much, even if they are Heritage plants. So I’m going with the two-day – not sure of the exact price but it’s got to be better than that! I put some MG soil in the bottom of one of the gallon ice cream buckets, then dug out the plants and put them, soil and all, into the bucket, adding more MG soil on top. Then I added some water and put the lid on, with holes poked in it for air, inside a large plastic bag, with styrofoam padding on each end for a close fit. Tape that sucker up and I’m ready. Cross your fingers they survive – new experiment for me, sending seedlings.

  22. I called Lois, across the street, to see if she is ready for her seedlings – she has a family reunion coming up so we’ll wait until next week. I will give her the 2 seedlings with the buckets to use to keep them safe from the bunnies – heaven knows, I’ve got enough of ’em! I still have a stack of at least a dozen in my closet that I haven’t used yet! They come in handy for a LOT of things!
