Lowland Streaked Tenrec

The lowland streaked tenrec (Hemicentetes semispinosus) is a small mammal within the Tenrecidae family and are only found in tropical lowland rain forest in the eastern parts of Madagascar.

Tenrecs are odd-looking creatures that look like a cross between a shrew and a hedgehog having a bad hair day, don’t you think?

The lowland streaked tenrec has a long snout and limbs, and a vestigial tail. The hair, or fur, is black with yellow stripes that run down the side of the body, and a yellowish band running from the crown to the tip of the snout.

It has a messy assemblage of quills which are barbed and detachable.

The head and body are 4.8 to 6.5 inches in length. The weight is about 7 ounces.The streaked tenrec is active during day and night, feeding primarily upon earthworms, but also on insects.During the winter (May to October), tenrecs can drop their body temperature to nearly that of the surroundings to conserve energy, but in the coldest weather, they must hibernate.Their breeding season is from October to December, although, depending upon local food supply and temperature, they may also mate at other times of the year.The gestation period lasts 58 days. The average size of a litter is 6 young. The young are weaned at 18 to 25 days.Females are reproductively active at a young age, sometimes breeding at just five weeks!

The lowland streaked tenrec lives in long, shallow burrows, usually in family groups of about 20 individuals.

The streaked tenrec communicates with other by a method known as stridulation, the act of producing sound by rubbing together certain body parts. In this case, the body parts are specialized quills on the middle of their backs which they vibrate to create a low-pitched noise. The lowland streaked tenrec is the only known mammal to have the ability to do this. It is a method more commonly associated with insects and snakes.

If threatened by a predator, a streaked tenrec will raise the barbed quills on its back and around its neck and buck the head violently to attempt to drive the quills into the attacker’s nose or paws.

    1. Interesting creature….another day starting with 57 at the moment but it will warm up quickly now that the sun is coming up. Hoping I can fly my Trump flag today. Weather last night is predicting a LOT of rain next week and temps up to 90 for a few days, with some thunderstorms. Typical NE spring!

Donald Trumps said “I’m thinking about running for President in 2012, and I need you guys to pray for me that God gives me the wisdom to make the right decision”. I disagree but, then again, I still don’t know what it was he said that got him booted – got the idea he said something nasty about her appearance, which was, indeed, unnecessary – her appearance has nothing to do with this, IMO. In the end, it is up to the owner of the business to decide who to hire and fire, as far as I’m concerned. It’s not like The Bee is the only on-line site that takes advert $$$ from politicians running for office.

But I guarantee you that HE didn’t think of that – he’s not that sharp, IMO. I think he’s being led around by the nose, personally.

              5. Well, we all like the Bee – it’s funny! As for the owner, I don’t honestly know much about him. Do I think it was appropriate, the manner in which he fired him? No, that was petty and it shouldn’t have been done that way. But it’s his right as the business owner – that is ALL I’m saying. Everything else is extraneous to that central point.

    I am getting bombarded with tweets in my thread from people promoting DeSantis (not promotional ads). They include a Florida state politician praising DeSantis….and even one from Casey DeSantis.

    I FOLLOW NONE OF THEM ON TWITTER ! They are just being planted in my thread out of nowhere.

    Does Elon Musk know twitter is interfering in our election?

    tried calling my mom while hubby was in the post office…no answer. waited for 5 minutes tried again…no answer.
    third time a man answers…this is the EMT (!)
    seems my mom was in her bedroom sitting on the bed going thru a box of stuff when her phone rang and when she tried to slide over to reach it, she instead slid OFF the bed and onto the floor.
    she couldn’t get back up. in her moving around, she accidentally hit her medical alert thing so within minutes, there was a cop car and an ambulance at her house.
    she slid ON HER BUTT out of the bedroom to the living room, yelling that they should go next door to get a key and to NOT break her door open!
    the EMT said she was fine–up and walking (with her walker) and talking. she didn’t hit her head, didn’t knock herself out either.
    so we hung up letting them finish their business there and started to drive to pick up the pear trees…the phone rings–it’s my mom. we are no man’s land at this point and can’t connect to her. we’re driving frantically thinking maybe something IS wrong.
    what a zoo…every time we have a signal and pull over, we lose the signal!
    finally got into a town and called her. she sounded fine–everyone left.

    but they are going to talk to my brother about installing a lockbox for emergency personnel to retrieve a key for her front door.

  44. Yeah! I finally managed to get a cheese/sausage omellette down…..I was able to eat some Cream of Wheat last night….progress! Something isn’t right with my gums so I’ll be calling Tuesday to make an appointment in Norfolk so they can check it out. It’s clearly not a “normal” infection, with no swelling, pus or real pain to speak of, but…..something is off. It almost feels like there is still a piece of tooth there, on both sides, right under the nasal sinus cavity….

      1. Maybe…IDK…she really had to pull hard on those so maybe a piece broke or something. It was what they call, I think, the “eye” teeth that are deeply rooted. Considering that they weren’t real happy about doing it in the first place….I have to kind of wonder if she really looked closely enough. It wasn’t on their schedule so I’m sure it interfered with other previously scheduled appointments as well.

    1. Congrats! I had been trying to figure out the best way to send the cantaloupe seedlings to my sis – they just aren’t big enough yet, IMO, to try to separate them out. So I told her I’m going to leave them here until they get 2 or 3 layers of leaves on them; then I’ll dig them out and use some of the bigger seedling containers (of course I save them when I buy plants!) with fresh MiracleGro soil – that way she can just dig a hole and plant the whole thing, dirt and all, and they should be ok.

      Just have to cross my fingers on this one – I’ve never tried to mail seedlings before – I was always ordering them! And you know I’ve got PLENTY of packing material, considering all the bubble-wrap and boxes I’ve saved over the years. I’ll put each of the 3 seedlings in their own container. Conversely, I could put all 3 in one of the gallon ice cream tubs – I have the tops for those and no holes on the bottom so I could seal in the moisture! If they are too big for the smaller containers, I’ll just put each one in a separate ice cream bucket and use a bigger box. I’m going to send them overnight so they should be fine if I really soak them.

      1. it should…we have to have the fencing around the middle sort of. too high and the babies sneak underneath and eat the tender leaves and chew the young trunk. too low and the buck will bend the fence down and go at it from the top. it has to be wide enough that they can’t “bully” their way to the young growth.

    The partnership between Musk and DeSantis draws some questions about the role that the billionaire may have in the Florida governor’s campaign for the presidency as he goes head-to-head with President Donald Trump.

    This is the weirdest political ad I’ve ever seen. I don’t think it means Musk for VP, but it does look as if Musk is DeSantis’ crutch.
